Going from Kindle to Kobo: My Thoughts and how I settled on the Clara BW

I've had my one and only e-reader: the 4th generation Kindle since 2011. That's quite literally over a decade old- 13 years, to be exact.

It's been deemed old enough to justify an upgrade. Not that I had even been needing one, or considering getting a new one; rather, the Kindle had just started glitching on me and freezing this past September. After 13 years, I'd say it's an accomplishment that it took this long for the tech to finally start breaking down on me. Believe me when I say that this Kindle had not been babied by any means whatsoever.

Now, it's been exactly 30 days since I've gone from my Kindle 4th gen 2011 model (thanks Mom and Dad) to the new Kobo Clara BETWEEN. Read on to see what my thoughts are on this upgrade!

I don't think I can go back to the Kindle UX and world, and I truly do see what people are saying about Kobo just being overall better.

For starters, here are the specs between both as a comparison:

As you can tell from the glaring number of red X circles, the basic Kindle 4th gen does not have as much much going for it compared to my new Kobo Clara BW. But that's okay! Here are some things I LIKED about the Kindle:

The e-ink screen

The physical page turning buttons on the side - I still love the page turners and how I just need to press down on the side. The buttons are very streamlined and a part of the side plastic framing.

The wallpapers when the device is turned off

The battery life (once upon a time, one charge could last me a good 4 months I stg)

The size of the screen (was not willing to go smaller, but was open to go bigger)

Straightforward system and user interface (turn on, find book, read.)

Being able to email epubs and PDFs to the Kindle directly via the Whispernet

Here are some things I DISLIKE about my Kindle today:

Its current extremely short battery life (I don't think a charge can last me two weeks now)

Being locked into the Kindle Amazon storefront and ecosystem - yes, I purchased each and every book on Amazon that I have on my Kindle...

Not being able to make Libby work on the Kindle (as a Canadian reader)

Lack of backlighting options

Anything to do with any sort of typing (I had to physically press the arrow buttons and wait until it landed on the right letter to press enter, then move on to the next letter, rinse repeat. Needless to say, it gets exhausting real quick trying to type out a short word, let alone a title of a book you're trying to find in your Kindle library storage.)

Lack of ad-free options with today's Kindle models (I got lucky with my Kindle 4th gen, where the home screen goes directly to my storage, listing all the books and collection folders I created. I hear this is no longer a thing, and the home page is the Amazon Kindle storefront. Ew.)

So, the Kobo Clara BW does a lot of what I liked about my Kindle - and more! It has quite a lot going for it: a long battery life, multiple backlighting options (reg vs warm lighting), bluetooth (if I wanted to do audiobooks, but I do that on my phone anyway so it's just a bonus for me). The Kobo Clara BW has crisp displays (I've read some manga and comics on it), and the zooming in and text font/size adjustments are super easy to navigate.

I know, I know. No physical page-turning buttons. I still lament the loss of my buttons. I know there are some Kobo models such as the Libra that have the buttons, but I strongly believe that the Kindle 4th gen buttons are superior. I liked that they were a part of the side, rather than a blocky-looking extension, like the buttons on the Libra are. The touch screen was a bit of an interesting thing to navigate in the beginning, but as we use touch-screen phones, it was very easy and quick to get used to it.

Why not the colour option?

Granted, the Kobo Clara colour as well as some other colour alternatives did come out. Why did I not choose the colour option? Yes, colour e-ink and e-readers are pretty to look at, but for someone who uses e-readers purely to read novels and text-heavy documents, it seemed unnecessary for my purposes. In store, I did a side-by-side comparison of the Clara Colour and BW and actually found the lighting to be drastically different at max brightness and warmth. Here's a picture I found online that gives you an idea of what I mean:

As you can see, the Clara BW version (right) has a crisper and whiter background, and the Clara Colour (left) looked a bit orange-red-toned overall.

ABOVE ALL: the Kobo ecosystem has been fantastic for me.

As someone who has been pitifully buying every single e-book on Amazon thus far or loading janky PDFs with too-small-text, the Kobo Clara BW is a breath of fresh air. It was very easy to connect my Libby account in the Settings. I now have an automatic delivery of all my ebook loans to my Kobo (!!!!) (A dream come true for Canadian e-readers!). I also have Calibre downloaded on my laptop and with it, can customize my Kobo to no end. You can see that I've gone ahead and gave my Kobo some wallpapers, which include my favourite The New Yorker covers. I'm happy with how much I can do with my Kobo. The Pocket app feature also came as a pleasant surprise! It's nice being able to read articles during work lunches and save any interesting articles on my computer, and those articles get automatically downloaded to my Kobo.

If you're like me as a reader and your needs are similar to mine (and maybe your old Kindle is dying on you) I encourage you to make the jump to Kobo! I haven't regretted my Kobo Clara BW purchase at all. In fact, I've already finished 13 books since I booted up my Clara.

An archaic chandelier comprised of rusted metal swayed back and forth above her head and it was the only thing Desdemona could focus on as she lay on the ground with her hands clasped together behind her head. The only source of her comfort came in the form of the dank and moldy rustic stone flooring beneath her and that was not saying much.

She shifted uncomfortably to her side and sighed when she realized it was not going to get any better than this. It had taken awhile to adjust to the dark and dismal environment of her new accommodation, but Desdemona currently preferred the desolation over the company of the maniacal sisters who were currently enjoying the life of luxury above ground. What the fuck?’ Desdemona asks herself. She knows deep down that she should feel a deep hatred for the woman in front of her, but she didn’t want to anger her and cause her to lash out violently. “That’s a cell phone, like uh, a mobile telephone you can take everywhere with you and make phone calls. “Where do I fit in all of this?” Desdemona asks. “Mother has seen it fit to keep you alive as my pet and I can do whatever I want with you yet you don’t fight back, you speak to me in a respectful tone and you’ve given me a gift. You have clearly declared your utmost love and devotion to me. I must keep you alive and away from my sisters so neither of them can see what you mean to me. You are my beloved!” Bela declares confidently as she reaches out to pet Desdemona’s head affectionately.

‘What?’

Desdemona freezes in place as her mind tries to absorb what is being said to her. She figured that Bela was lonely but that she was also the wisest and more mature of her sisters so she expected her to have a stronger notion as to what love entails. Desdemona should have known better to expect more from monsters who have known nothing but the horrors of sacrifice, torture, and murder in this hell house.

Bela grew slightly impatient at Desdemona’s continued silence and startled the younger girl by slapping her across the face.

“Well, do you have anything to say after I poured my heart and soul out to you or are you just toying with me? Mother and I do not tolerate the games you humans like to play.” Bela growls out menacingly as she towers over her prey, her hand reaching for the sickle that was strapped to her side.

Although she was momentarily stunned, Desdemona’s survival instincts kicked right back into gear.

“I-I understand, I apologize for my quiet demeanor but that’s how I am. I’m not used to sharing my thoughts with other people, so please bear with me, Mistress!” Desdemona begins, her hands reaching out and clutching at Bela’s hooded dress. She looked up and could see that Bela was clearly pleased with the title of ‘Mistress.’

“You’ll find that I prefer that you share your thoughts with me more often, my love, since you’ve so freely given yourself to me. I will go inform mother of our developing relationship and quickly send a maiden down here for food, you poor thing. I can hear your stomach growling and it is so pitiful to see. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ll leave you to recover but don’t fret for too long. I’ll be back to see you soon.” Bela turned to leave but there was another question in the back of Desdemona’s mind that demanded an answer so she hurried over to Bela’s slowly disintegrating form and gripped her shoulder in order to stop her.

 Bela raised a brow at the action but when turned around, she couldn’t help but melt at the sight of Desdemona’s pretty puppy dog eyes looking up at her in love and adoration.

“Before you go, I have to know what happened to my best friend, Veronica. The loud-mouth your mother dragged around in chains. Is she…is she still alive?” Desdemona asked, unsure if she really wanted to know the answer but if she were still alive, at least she wouldn’t be alone and in miserable in Castle Dimitrescu.

 Bela smirked knowing exactly what plans her mother had in store for the other screeching woman-thing. The way Desdemona was looking at her, however, made her bite her own lip and relent. She normally kept her mother’s word and did not discuss such plans with outsiders but this was the woman who threw herself at Bela’s feet and declared her love for her.

“Mother is teaching her a lesson about obedience. She will not kill her if your friend plays her cards right, but your friend is stubborn and mother likes to beat that out of our servants. That’s all I will say on the matter, does that satisfy you?” Bela asked as she cupped Desdemona’s chin and gazed into her unfathomably deep gray eyes.

Desdemona holds back a choked sob and simply nods in response, sighing in relief when Bela finally transforms into a massive ball of insects and leaves the dungeon.

 She curls up into a ball and brings her knees tightly against her chest, tears now running freely down her face. Desdemona cries for what seems like an eternity but when she begins to calm down, a small amount of hope swells in her chest. Veronica was still alive. If they could reunite, they could come up with a plan to escape this castle without alerting Lady Dimitrescu and her demented daughters. Her heart was consumed by a strange, fluttering feeling that made her feel light-headed and it would have annoyed Bela if the picture on the screen wasn’t so damned tempting. It was a picture of Desdemona wearing absolutely nothing and she was posing so provocatively that it made Bela want to go back and have her way with the beauty she was looking at on screen. She had been messing around with the photo albums Desdemona showed her and found something that read ‘Hidden’. She must have clicked it by accident, and mother forgive her, she was ever so glad that she did.

Bela sighed and clutched the phone tightly to her chest, not wanting this strange sensation of desire to leave her body. She was absolutely certain that she was in love with Desdemona Hawthorne and nobody was going to take that away from her.

-Overhaul: He’s probably going to wanna get rid of it to begin with. Like he really can’t see himself with anyone that has a quirk. Falling in love with you was the exception. I mean, he’s already outside of his comfort zone. He’s gotten to the point where he wants to touch you but his hives pops up because he’s irritated and unhappy with your quirk. He secretly thinks it’s very cute, but still an abomination in his eyes. He won’t force the serum on you, but he’ll annoy you until you take it. On the off chance that he actually lets you keep it then it won’t be for too long. You have about a month or 2 to make him fall for it, then maybe he’ll let you have the quirk. But you’ve only got a 4% chance at success for that.

-Chrono: Fuck you’re adorable. I mean really cute and he hates that you make him blush so easily. Like it must be a super power at this point. Hari is always secretly taking pics of you and setting them as his wallpaper to his phone. Hari also has a newer car so he sets them as the screen wallpaper in his car too. Plus he’s rather taken with the way you have cat characteristics and mannerisms too. He’s also talking about how you’re the cutest girl/boy/person in the entire world. He really brags about you like a LOT.

-Nemoto: He treats you like a gentleman should, and that doesn’t change. He’s a little more protective of you since you have an appearance altering quirk and he doesn’t want anyone to be rude to you about it. Like you may be cute to a lot of people but there are still awful people out there that think you might look weird as hell. Sometimes when you nap, Shin pokes and prods at your palms while mummering something about soft bean toes. He’s pretty soft with you. 10/10 husband material.

-Deidoro: Literally a bully when it comes to you, but don’t take it personally. He doesn’t hate you. It’s actually quite the opposite when it comes to you. I think he has a hard time telling you that he thinks you’re literally the most perfect person he’s ever met. Therefore it comes out in garbled messes when drunk, and teasing tones when sober. “Hey mittens, got you a bell to go around your neck.” Sometimes you ask him for a drink and he comes back with a bowl of milk. Other times He busts out the laser light just to see if you chase it. He may seem to give you a hard time, but he’d be nothing without you. As soon as he finds out the right way to tell you this, he’ll say it one day. Until then, just endure his teasing lol

-Mimic: No good with relationships, and even worse when they involve quirks like these, but Joi tries his best to make you happy. He’s the type to buy you a lot of cat related stuff in the hopes that it would make you happy. He has to admit you can be a handful sometimes so he kinda keeps an eye on you. He knows the danger comes from you at night time. This is when he learns the hard way when he rocks his legs under the cover. The sudden movement makes your pupils blow and you do a wiggle butt before a pounce, sinking your claws and teeth into the blanket and pushing through the fabric to his legs. That’s when he realized he’s dealing with a wild one 

-Pops: This is no issue to him. He’s taken care of so many stray cats in his young days. He treats you as such, but also doesn’t forget that you’re human as well. Pops is very soft and gentle with you. There are many times when he’s sitting on the back by the koi pond, gently petting you and stroking your tail. Sometimes he gives you a little scratch behind the ear because he knows you like it. Other times he might let you rub your cheek against his hand as you two relax well into the night and watch the moonlight together. 

-Setsuno: Oh my God he swears he’ll never fall in love again and that he should just break things off with you before they get too complicated. Then he sees you in bread-loaf position with your eyes closed happily as you purr, and he realized you have his entire damn heart in your hands (or paws). God his problem is that he falls in love too fast. He’s so whipped for people and super easy to manipulate and exploit. He keeps waiting on the hurt to come, but it never does. You continue to love him and treat him right, returning all the love that he gives to you back unto him. You are his whole world at this point (cat quirk or not) and he’s most definitely determined to marry your ass someday.

-Tabe: He’s not familiar with love the way you give it to him, but he’s willing to learn and try for you. Tabe is a pretty good partner actually, and he seems to get better along the way. He’s learning not just about your personality but your quirk as well, and how it may affect the relationship (or your life). He takes part in cat-like activities with you as well! That’s everything from petting the special spot behind your ears to wiggling a string toy so you can play with the ends of it. He secretly hopes you can eat cat food/treats along with normal human food too. It’ll be his excuse to try that without seeming weird.

-Hojo: For some odd reason he goes into full body-guard mode when it comes to you. It’s mainly because of your quirk that he becomes more protective over you than ever. He knows you might get distracted too easily and dart out in front of a car or something. Also what if someone tries to easily take advantage of you in a dark alleyway because they use a laser light to lead you there? He’s always worried about the worst things while you’re just vibing and sharpening your claws on the couch (which he told you not to do like a million times...uh oh...here he comes with the spray bottle and rolled up newspaper!!!). Although Hojo is protective, he still tries to calm down and give you space to survive as an adult without him hovering. 

-Katsukame: Flexible you say? Oh yeah, he’s bring that to the bedroom for sure. Anyway, aside from that he thinks you are the cutest little thing to exist (and yes you’re little because there’s no way you can add up to his height/size/weight. I mean, how could you not be cute with a quirk like that? You can get anything you want with that damn :3 face alone! Katsukame doesn’t admit to spoiling you but he does, believe me. Aside form treating you like a little baby, he takes advantage of that flexibility in the bedroom ;)

-Tengai: Very respectful regardless of your quirk or not. He loves you and wants to hold you to a certain level of respect that he thinks you deserve. He tries not to bring up your quirk a lot because he doesn’t want to run the mistake of hurting your feelings .Of course you don’t care about any of that! You’re currently too busy sniffing the lock box where Tengai hides all the catnip. Anyway, he really loves you and acknowledges your quirk while being respectful and loving of it at the same time!

-Rappa: First of all you get bombarded with cat related nicknames both inside and outside of the bedroom. On top of that, he’s going to wear that flexibility out and probably add a few new poses to the list. Besides all that, he loves you AND your quirk so he’s no doubt adamant on beating the brakes off ANYBODY that dare disrespect you or your quirk. He really is a sweetheart even though it may be hard to see under that brutish himbo energy.

Unrelated sidenote before on get on a roll here: I will now absolutely be staying up past my bedtime and watching Enchanted after I finish writing this. How does she knooooow you love heeerrrr????

So I went for a walk today because the weather was really nice and I did something I never do. I took my headphones off while I was walking. Whenever I’m out walking for the purpose of exercise or I’m at the gym, I ALWAYS wear my headphones. Because what if a stranger tries to talk to me?! But today I was out and I just felt like taking them off, so I did. And I’m so painfully introverted that it was kinda terrifying, but I did it anyways! And now I’ve been feeling a vibe like I could conquer the world for basically the rest of the day.

Also on my walk I started thinking. Since I didn’t have my music or current audiobook playing, I was alone with my thoughts. Never good. I’ve very recently stumbled upon and then immediately become obsessed with Rose and Rosie on youtube. (Summary: They’re youtubers and they’re British and they’re married and they’re hysterical and beautiful and so disgustingly in love that I sometimes get all teary eyed just thinking about how in love they are. Also it’s their book I’m listening to and it’s changing my life. They’re also my phone wallpaper. But they’re the home screen, not the lock screen. I try to have a little bit of dignity.) And I was just walking along today thinking about how in love they are and a thought crossed my mind. It was: “I can’t wait until I have that.” Like in a dreamy and hopeful kind of way.

I didn’t immediately recognize this thought as particularly groundbreaking, but then I realized that it definitely was. I’ve never thought about love that way. My thoughts have always been along the lines of: “I’ll never have that.” “When will I ever get to be that happy?” “I want that so bad.” All in the tone of striving for something that I know I’ll never achieve. You know what I mean? Like it wasn’t this wistful and dreamy kind of mood associated with these thoughts. It was about wanting something I never thought I would have. Maybe even something I didn’t think I deserved.

But today it was, “I can’t wait until I have that.” Somewhere inside me I was recognizing that this is something I will have someday, this is something I deserve, and this is something I can look forward to. I never thought of love as something I’m going to have. I’ve only ever thought of it as something I wanted. My brain somehow sees a huge difference between those two things.

Somehow it leads into thoughts about whether or not I feel like I deserve love. As I’m getting older, I’m discovering more and more “problems” I have. These things have been difficult to think about and dwell on, because I definitely dwell on them too much which is ironically one of my issues as well, but they’ve also been enlightening and interesting and weirdly make me feel more like myself or like a whole person. I’m starting to realize all these new and different things that are a part of me. All these things that make me who I am. And today, when I thought, “I can’t wait until I have that,” I realized that I wasn’t worrying about feeling unlovable or undeserving of love. Instead, without even trying, I flipped a switch and immediately knew just the opposite. That I am very deserving of love. That someday I will find someone who loves me for exactly who I am. In fact, I’ll probably find someone who thinks that the things about myself that I dwell on and worry about most are actually my best qualities.

And this is where “How do I know?” comes in. Because as has been the case for the last two and a half years, I’ve still got a lot of, “But how can I know for sure?” I’m at the point now where I’m 100% sure and confident in saying that I’m gay, but I thought the same thing for a while before when I was calling myself bi. (I realized this yesterday when I went back and read some old journal entries from earlier this year.) I said that I was sure. I said that I didn’t know how I was sure, but I just was. So my brain immediately started panicking and thinking that maybe the same thing is happening now. I say now that I’m sure, but I’ve been there before. How can I possibly know?

Well, it’s because of how I think about love now. Because of what I thought today. I don’t think of love as something I don’t deserve or will never have or even just desperately want someday. It’s something I know I’m going to have and I can’t wait to have it. That’s how I know.

Back then, you could only theme icons that were offered by Google apps. So, for example, when I tried it out on a Pixel 3 using Android 12 beta, it changed some, but not all, of the icons on my home page into black designs against a hued background. (Quite honestly, I thought the normal multicolored icons looked much better.) Third-party icons, like the one for Slack, remained as they were. In Android 13, the ability to have your icons follow a color palette has been expanded to more icons — as long as the developers have tweaked their coding to allow it. When I turned on the themed icons on my current Pixel 6, the only app out of the many apps on my phone that I could immediately find that followed the new theme (and wasn’t a Google app) was Bitwarden. (9to5Google has a running list of third-party apps that can adopt Google’s themed look.) Still, it’s nice to be able to play around with the look of your home page. Want to try it out yourself? Easy. Choose your wallpaper Let’s start by choosing a wallpaper. Long-press on an empty part of your homescreen until you see the pop-up menu. Select Wallpaper & style. Tap on the Change wallpaper link just below the two representations (the home and lock screens) of your current wallpaper. Long-press for a pop-up menu. Select Change wallpaper. Tap on one of the categories presented on the wallpaper screen, and then select a specific image. Or tap on the top button called My photos to select one of your own photos. Once you select your image, you’ll be shown a preview of what it will look like on your homescreen and lock screen. (Two buttons below the preview image let you toggle between the two.) If you’re satisfied, tap the check mark in the bottom-right corner. A pop-up menu will give you the choice of using the wallpaper on the homescreen, your lock screen, or both. And you’re done! You’ll find yourself back on your home page — with your new wallpaper. Choose a supplied wallpaper image or use your own photo. You can see what it will look like on the homescreen and lock screen.  It was all Ryusei’s fault. Well, maybe Sakuya actually had his responsibility in the matter, for he was the one who downloaded the game – but still, all Ryusei’s fault. Though at that point the question was not ‘whose fault is this’ anymore, but rather ‘how am I to cope with this’. Sitting on his bed, he stared blankly at his computer – or more what was left of it, the device having not really appreciated the way it had been thrown away when the game started bugging. But it was all Ryusei’s fault, after all, did not he say that it was all fun and game? That guy did have a weird acceptation of what ‘fun and game’ was! Sakuya did not find it funny nor pleasant, not the slightest. He had already played such games, the kind of ‘choose your best waifus’ game, and he knew quite enough about them to be assured it was not how these games were supposed to unfold. Maybe it was only a bad joke, a bad dream made by the main character, and the game was going to be back to normal afterwards…? Sakuya did not want to know. Moreover, the current state of his computer was not going to let him find out. All Ryusei’s fault, that too. How was he supposed to fix his computer? He did neither have the time nor the money. And, on another note, how was he supposed to get over what he had just been through?

 He sighed and peered out by the window. It was quite dark outside, and a glance at his watch informed him that it was nearly ten pm. Sakuya sighed again, realizing that he had just spoiled his all evening playing that damned game. And now night had fallen and he had nothing to help him take his mind off Ryusei’s stupid idea.

 Maybe he should just try to sleep. He turned the lights off, and reclined on the bed. His flat was way too quiet. He shivered and put his headphones on, deciding to listen to some music. The songs were new ones he had discovered the day before, when he had gone to the karaoke with his classmates, Koyuki, that stupid Ryusei, and Mahiru. Sakuya could imagine quite clearly Mahiru singing on that song, and this picture eased his thoughts for a moment. It was a nice song, with a catchy rhythm and simple lyrics which stuck easily in one’s mind – a song perfectly fitting for Mahiru. This only song had managed to put on Sakuya’s face a bright smile… However the next song happened to be one of those performed by Ryusei, this stupid brat, and right after the first chorus, flashbacks of the game overflowed Sakuya’s pictures of Mahiru singing. He changed the song nervously, but the images remained in his mind, and the following songs were not much help. He stopped the music and put the headphones down.

 Okay, music was not a good idea. He moved on his back and glanced at the blank celling to clear his mind…

 Holy crap. He had just heard a noise. A rattle. And some light was blinking too. No doubt it was coming from his agonising computer, but this atmosphere looked way too much like the game’s to him… Nervously, he pulled his blanket up to his eyes. Was it that freaking IA which was looking for him, having not liked the way he had just left the game by literally breaking it? Maybe it actually possessed his agonising computer, now… He maintained his eyes closed, as if he were a child who believed the monster could not take you down when you’re hiding beneath your blanket. But the rattle remained. Sakuya could even felt it coming closer. Finally, he took a deep breath, startled up and turned the lights on.

 He anxiously scanned the room. It was as empty as one would have expected. Of course it is, you idiot, there is no way a game could appear in your room and actually threaten your life! Ryusei was going to hear of him! Further inspection of the room informed Sakuya that his computer was indeed the one to blame for the rattle, the poor thing still being between life and death. Sakuya resisted the urge to break it down completely, for he feared the spirit of the IA would come out of the device and take hold of his own soul. He decided to take the dying computer in the bathroom, so that he would not hear it any longer from his bed. Just in case, he locked the bathroom’s door, and his own room’s. Better be too cautious than not enough, he thought, just in case.

 Back to his bed again, Sakuya closed his eyes one more time, and tried to remain as quiet as possible, to not think about anything. Feeling uneasy in the darkness, he had even leave the lights on. But sleep would not come. He could still hear the rattle of his computer, and though it was most probably an auditory hallucination, it was enough to prevent him from resting. A few minutes later, suddenly, Sakuya had an illumination. He took out his phone and stared at the screen. The wallpaper was a picture taken two days ago, showing Mahiru and himself on the way back home after high school. Their smiles on the photo brought one on the actual Sakuya’s face, and comforted him in his idea. There was only one thing left to do.  

“Shirota Mahiru speaking, what…

-          Hi bro, how are you doing? Hope I’m not bothering you…”

Sakuya hesitated. What a silly question, he thought, of course he was. He had perceived Mahiru’s tiredness in his voice when the boy had picked up, and indeed it was past 10.30 pm, what kind of classmate called his pal at such a time?

“Of course not, is everything okay?”

There was no way Sakuya could tell him the true reason behind his call. He just had to build up some story…

“Y-yes, thank you. I was just—

-          Calling your best friend at almost eleven pm on a Saturday night? That’s not something someone doing okay would do.”

Sakuya could not restrain a sigh, half relieved half impressed. That was Shirota Mahiru for you! There was no way he could lie to him… Not about that. Reluctantly, he decided to give an actual explanation.

“You’re too perceptive for me, I give up. Well, the truth is, I can’t sleep… Because… Eh…”

Mahiru did not say anything, waiting for his friend’s explanation. Sakuya was trying to formulate it in a way that would not make him sound like a complete idiot.

“Well, do you remember the game Ryusei told us about?

-          The visual novel thingy? Yes, you teased me about it because I said I had no interest in that kind of things. And then, what of it?”

Sakuya hit his forehead with his hand. He had completely forgotten he had actually make fun of Mahiru who rejected of playing any dating sim. Well, it appeared the joke was on him…

“Eh, precisely, I wish I would have listened to you back then. This game… Was not what I expected.

-          What is that? Did your 2D waifu attempt to kill you?”

That flash of wit was actually quite deserved, and Sakuya sustained it in silence. His lack of answer did not go unnoticed, however, and Mahiru carried on, sounding a bit worry.

“Okay, bad joke, never mind. It was not a casual dating sim, was it?

-          Not quite, yes.”

Sakuya heard Mahiru sighed, and he started to feel embarrassed.

“I’m sorry… I’m actually ridiculous, right? It’s my fault for listening to Ryu…

-          Don’t give me that, Sakuya. Okay, you do are having an insomnia because of a pseudo-visual novel and although it can seem a bit ridiculous, I’m not gonna leave you alone now. To put things simply, I’ll stay with you until you fall asleep.”

1. First console you’ve ever owned?‘Twas the original NES. I was so happy when my parents bought it (although tbh my dad bought it as much for himself as for me). I spent so many hours playing the SMB games… ahh, good times.

3. Favorite childhood game?Hmmm, probably Super Mario Bros. 3. That was the one I spent the longest playing, anyway. My mom even went to the trouble to borrow the strategy guide from the library, photocopy the whole thing, and bind it together into a book for me. My mom was the best. ;_;

4. Longest consecutive hours you’ve played a game?Whew, uhhh, not as long as some people, I’m sure. I don’t think I’ve ever spent more than 8 hours straight playing games. I’m certainly no match for the likes of Neptune and Vert, that’s for sure. ^^;;;

5. Game with the best soundtrack?I actually really really like the soundtrack from the first Hyperdimension Neptunia game. A lot of those songs just get stuck in my head, y'know? Especially Nepgear’s theme. :3

6. An underrated game from within the last few years?Hmm, gonna go with Akiba’s Trip: Undead & Undressed. It apparently only got a 64/100 on Metacritic, which is WAY too low for how fun this game is.

7. Most disappointing game you’ve played?Honestly? Most of the Jak and Daxter series. I really really wanted to like those games, but I just… couldn’t. There was just something about them that really turned me off. I enjoy other, similar games, so I don’t know what it was. I got all of them for super cheap (like probably $5 each) so it’s not like I spent a bunch of money on them, but I still felt ripped off, y'know?

8. The game with the best atmosphere/scenery?The Metroid Prime games, for me, had some of the best settings. Nicely-rendered and completely appropriate for the feel of the game. If you’ve never played any of the MP games, please do so. If you can play the Wii controls versions, so much the better (it’s playable with the Gamecube controller but once you use the Wiimote to aim Samus’s gun you’ll never go back).

10. Prefer PC or console?Based solely on the number of games amassed, PC wins out, but I honestly don’t prefer one over the other.

11. Have you written any fanfic or made any fanart?…not of video games, no.

12. Most bizarre game you’ve ever played?It’s pretty tame, but probablyyyyyy…. Goat Simulator. Like, what the fuck even is this game.

18. Worst game you’ve played?Ooh, interesting question. I don’t really know if I can answer this properly? One of the games that stands out to me is called Sparkle 2 Evo. The graphics were nice but the controls were awful and it was nearly unplayable. The devs might have patched it since, but I kinda lost interest in it so I don’t really care at this point.

19. Hardest game you’ve ever played?The hardest game I’ve seriously played is probably VVVVVV. Fuck that game. >:(

24. Ever cried because of a video game? Which one(s)?Oh, probably! I know SMB3 made me cry when I was little because there was one level I just couldn’t beat no matter how many times I tried it. I forget which level it was now, lol.

When I made a new character in Stardew Valley today, I spent between 5-10 minutes, but when I was creating a character in Saints Row IV, I probably spent close to an hour tweaking every little variable to get it just right.

32. Do you cosplay?Not really, although I did cosplay as Squall from Final Fantasy 8 one time. I still have the gunblade sitting around somewhere.

44. Do graphics matter?They have to be done well, and the style has to fit with the overall style of the game. Other than that, I don’t care. A game isn’t instantly better by having more realistic graphics or whatever, I don’t care.

Other than, like… HuniePop or something, but even that’s not really explicit, it’s mostly just moaning. 68. An older game that you’ve just recently gotten into?I honestly can’t think of any! The oldest game I’ve gotten into *recently* is the aforementioned Akiba’s Trip: Undead & Undressed, but that came out in 2014, so I don’t know if it’s old enough for the purposes of this response.

69. Your first LI?…not quite sure what this means. Love interest? Like, first character from a game I fell in love with? First game I played where the main character had a love interest? I honestly don’t know how to answer this one.

70. Do you play any mobile games?A few. Not counting portable consoles (i.e. the 3DS or PS Vita), I have a handful of games on my phone (Sailor Moon Drops, Monument Valley, Mushihimesama, I even have Carmageddon on my phone (yes, they released an iOS port of that game somehow)).

71. A game you can’t stop talking/thinking about at the moment?Well I did just pick up Stardew Valley again, so I’m probably gonna be thinking about that for a while. Same with that Neptunia idol game, I just started playing that and it’s super fun.

73. A game with the best fandom?Overall, my experience has been that Neptunia fans are all pretty awesome. :D

74. Which game has the best lore?I actually love the lore from the Metroid series. The whole history with Samus and the Chozo is so interesting to me.

75. Do you focus on main storyline/quest or do sidequests first?I do both! I’ll play the main storyline until either (1) I need to grind more because the enemies/bosses are getting stronger, (2) I need to get better equipment and need either materials for crafting, or money for buying stuff, or (3) the main story is in a lull and I get an interesting side quest. Usually once I go off on a sidequest tangent, I don’t come back for a good long while (to the point where I’ll stop playing the game for a while and then when I come back to it I’m like “ok wtf was I supposed to be doing? I don’t remember, maybe I’ll just start over again lol”).

If she could go back and change things, she would start at the fourth day that Jasmine had called in sick. As the “Peggy/Maria” standby, (Y/N) was scheduled to go on in Jazzy’s place. Between rehearsals and the previous shows she had been in, the actress was used to the physical affection that was in the second act. On that fourth night, however, her better judgement seemed to be absent. She was beyond hyperactive as Peggy, but that wasn’t much of a problem. Since Margarita’s character was younger than Angelica or Elizabeth, (Y/N)’s demeanor was acceptable.

If she could go back and change things, she would fix how she acted during intermission. (Y/N) was usually the first person to change costumes. That left her twelve minutes out of the fifteen they were given. She had light conversations with Daveed and Carleigh- those were the two people she was closest to. She knew both of them like the back of her hand. (Y/N) ruffled Daveed’s hair, believing him to be much cuter than when he had his little ponytail.

She liked to think that his hairstyles represented his moods. When it was loose, Daveed seemed to be more bold than he usually was. The man was more reserved when his thick locks were all tied up. (Y/N) adored his hair. She braided a small portion of it (with much difficulty!) and knowing Daveed, he’d most likely forget about it. Thomas Jefferson walked out on stage with a braid in his hair that night.

Seven minutes left. Daveed had left to take a phone call, and Carleigh had struck up a conversation with another ensemble member. (Y/N) wandered around backstage, anxious for the next number she’d be in. She needed to get all of this energy out. Her portrayal of Maria wouldn’t be as it was supposed to that night. (Y/N) was an incredible actress, but she often let her moods infect her performances. Alexander Hamilton’s mistress wasn’t meant to be too bright and happy.

If she could go back and change things, she would prevent herself from entering Lin’s dressing room. It took three knocks before the door swung open. (Y/N) looked Lin up and down and admired the green costume he now wore. It suited him. She carefully watched as he wet his lips, the corners of his mouth tugging up to form a smile. Cute, she thought to herself.

“Miss Maria Reynolds.” He greeted her and welcomed her inside the small room. She gratefully stepped inside and took a seat by the vanity. Her eyes followed her co-star around as he grabbled a water bottle and brought the rim up to his mouth.

(Y/N) giggled and ran her fingers through her hair. “Mister Alexander Hamilton. Better start wrapping up. There’s five minutes ‘till we’re on.” She brought one of her legs over the other as she leaned forward and grinned at him.

He matched her joyful expression and leaned against the wall. “Six minutes left, actually.” He retorted with a gentle chuckle. The young woman watched intently as he crossed his arms over his chest. “But, yeah, I’m all ready to go back on.” Lin added.

“Mm, no, last time I checked, we had five minutes.”

At this, Lin pushed himself off of the wall and strolled across the room in order to pick his phone up off the table. He flashed the screen, which displayed the current time. (Y/N) noticed his phone wallpaper was an old picture of everyone in the company. She guessed that it had been taken on opening night. “Six minutes left,” She snorted, finding it funny to see a man use a cell phone while dressed in period clothing. “-just like I said! Honestly, Lin-Manuel, you should really work on your listening skills.”

The pair spoke and laughed together for another two minutes before their fun was interrupted by a stagehand barging in and reminding them of the time. (Y/N) stood with an irritated huff and smoothed her skirt. “Alright, I’ll go blow dry my face for a bit. This new lipstick they bought me won’t dry.”

“And that matters because…?” Lin pondered aloud as he took a few steps toward the dressing room door, meaning to open it so his companion could step outside.

Before she made her way toward the exit, (Y/N) grabbed a baby-wipe off of the vanity and squeezed it between her forefinger and thumb. “It matters because…I wouldn’t want to leave a nice red mark on your lips. I think Eliza would notice if her husband is wearing a lip shade that she doesn’t own,” She joked and grabbed onto the collar of Lin’s costume with her free hand. “Yanno, kinda like this.”
