hey christine!! i’m not a first-language french-speaker by i’ve been taking french courses for a few years so i can string a few sentences together, and i’m wondering if you have any french tv shows (or films!) that you really like that you’d recommend? maybe like something police/law procedural or crime drama esque? so far i’ve got secret histoires jotted down on a list and not much else. anyway! ((no pressure!!!!)) <333 sending much love!! <3
Hi, Nonnie!
That sounds absolutely fabulous, I’m so glad that you’ve decided to give French a go, and I can only admire your courage (as a native French speaker, the French language still fucks with me sometimes, lol). Props to you!
Secrets d’histoire is absolutely FANTASTIC - they’re great, and StĂ©phane Bern articulates particularly well, so his enunciation makes everything great. I think I have the one on Beethoven stashed away somewhere too!
Here’s a non-exclusive list of French things you’re always welcome to try and watch:
Movies/documentaries:
Avis de Mistral, a movie with Jean Reno that takes place in the South of France, where two youths from Paris are sent to their grandfather. There’s a lovely little deaf boy and some really emotional beats in it, I highly suggest it!
La Promesse de l’Aube, with Pierre Niney, a biographical motion picture about Romain Gary
Le Pacte des Loups, a weird fantasy / realistical take on the myth of the Beast of GĂ©vaudan (it has nudity and violence, so be aware of warnings before watching it, it can fuck with you if you’re not careful)
Yves Saint-Laurent, with Pierre Niney, about the fashion designer of the same name
Gims (Netflix), a French language documentary about the rapper Gims and his career with Sexion d’Assaut and becoming one of the best selling artists in France
Astérix & Obélix: Mission Cléopatre, which is what it says on the tin,
De Rouille et d’Os, a Matthias Schoenaerts & Marion Cotillard movie about a former whale trainer who loses the use of her legs after an accident with a killer whale,
De Gaulle, a biopic about the General de Gaulle which kinda sells itself,
Edmond, a sort of biopic of Edmond Rostand, the one who wrote Cyrano de Bergerac,
Au Revoir Là Haut, a con movie in the roarings twenties featuring two soldiers, one of which is completely disfigured.
Here’s a further list of movies I think you could watch: La Rafle, Qu’est ce qu’on a fait au bon Dieu, Rrrrrr!!!!, Les BronzĂ©s Font du Ski, Intouchables, Les MisĂ©rables (2019), Brice de Nice, etc.
Shows:
Kaamelot, King Arthur on his quest to the Holy Grail but if it was an absolute comedy,
Lupin, on Netflix with Omar Sy in the lead role (excellent!)
Un si grand soleil, a TV show that takes place in the South of France which I feel obligated to put on this list because it’s filmed in my home city (Montpellier, reprĂ©sente!) even though it’s not, by far, specially good and I’ve only seen a little bit of it,
Section de Recherches, which is basically CSI in French, but I don’t watch it myself (I’m not a fan of law procedurals and such, but I hear it should be good!)
JosĂ©phine Ange Gardien, which is not something I personally watch either, but from what I’ve seen of it, it should be quite fun if you’re into serialized TV shows with a little bit of procedures and crime and stuff, plus it’s kinda cute too.
Here’s some more you can look, if you feel like it: H, Bref, Engrenages, Un Gars Une Fille, ScĂšnes de MĂ©nage, etc.
Other:
The Restos du Coeur charity show, which is an absolute classic thing to watch in France with a whole bunch of French artists and other celebrities/public figures doing a sort of concert to raise money for charity,
Auto Moto, if you’re interested in cars/bikes etc. and you can, I’d try watching this, it airs every Sunday and is a car/bike specialist TV-show where they take a look at new cars and new bikes etc. every single week (it’s about 30 minutes long)
Les Aventures du Jeune Voltaire, an upcoming TV show about Voltaire, the first 2 episodes are airing on the 7th of February (I am looking for much forward to it!)
Cash Investigation, a good investigative television show that covers important current topics,
The Voice France, and I know this is a stretch, but the principle of the show is basically the same as the American one, except in French... Bonus, you get French songs as well!
The documentary “Les stars racontent 20 ans de NRJ Music Awards” if you can find it somewhere which is a 90 minute documentary about the NRJ Music Awards, the biggest music industry award show in France (it gives a nice insight into what is going on in France when it comes to music and such),
Other things you can watch, if you can find them online / if they’re available: Secrets d’Histoire (which you already have), France 5 and Arte usually have some good documentaries you can look up, etc.
Music:
Gims raps mostly in French language and has very good and sophisticated lyrics, I’d definitely look up some of his tracks if you don’t already know some of them,
Kendji Girac, a French Catalan Romani singer who won his season of the Voice and is currently the best selling The Voice alumni WORLDWIDE, he makes some nice bops to chill out to (I always get in a good mood when listening to his songs),
Indila, French singer, she’s got some nice tunes to her as well,
Nolwenn Leroy, known for her Brittany inspired songs which celebrate her heritage,
Soprano, French rapper who also does some nice bops,
Louane, a wonderful young French singer who has a beautiful voice,
Julien DorĂ©, a nice French singer who does some nice stuff too, and I’m obliged to put him on the list because he grew up in Lunel which is like almost next to where I grew up, lol,
Johnny Hallyday, which is the most clichĂ© thing EVER to put on this list because every single Frenchman will go “oh my god WHY” but his catalogue is so large that there’s bound to be some songs in there that you enjoy (He was called the French Elvis and is also called “the biggest rock star you've never heard of“ and I will unabashedly keep listening to his songs when I need it.
Other French singers/artists you can look up: Tryo, Indochine, Kyo, Slimane, Matt Pokora, Christophe Maé, Joyce Jonathan, etc.
There’s probably a whole bunch of other things I’ve missed myself because I haven’t been living in France for almost 6 years now, but this is just what I could list off the top of my head <3
(If you come off Anon, I know of a place to find some of the non-feature movies and non-fictional television shows if you’re interested!)

Okay Now Do The Rest
4. how did your elementary school teachers describe you?
Bright but argumentative. I was never afraid of pointing out things I didn’t feel were fair hfhddh
When we were learning numbers kids would often write 91 for nineteen, just flip them, y’know, and Ms. Potter yelled at the class for it. Baby Generiq went into it about how it was an understandable mix up because you do say the number first. In twenty-three you write the two first, so in nineteen it’s easy to assume you would write the nine first.
6. pastel, boho, tomboy, preppy, goth, grunge, formal or sportswear?
Tired.

TV shows. Every book adaptation should also be a series not a movie. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

Note
1-50
Alrighty!
1. What color are your socks?
All of my socks are either completely black or black and gray. Lol.
2. Have you ever lied about your age? Why?
Only once when I was like, 12 or 13 making a second Youtube account lol.
3. What is something you regret in the past month?
Becoming distant and isolating myself from most of my friends. Quarantine has not been good for my mental health tbh.
4. Do you believe in love at first sight?
Honestly? Not sure. Part of me doesn’t, and part of me does. Can’t really get either part to agree one way or the other.
5. When was the last time you wrote someone a letter on paper? Definitely well over a decade ago. Honestly can’t remember.
6. How old were you when you first learned how to ride a bike? Who taught you?
I was 11 or 12, and it was my older brother Jack who taught me. He also taught me how to drive lol.
7. Do you get along with your parents? Why or why not?
We get along well enough. Now that they’re retired the house is a much calmer environment.
8. What’s your favorite season?
Spring. I love seeing everything in bloom—the colors are very pleasing to me. I love seeing lots of green, and lots of lush plantlife.
9. Do you currently like someone?
Hmm, not entirely sure about that one. I guess I don’t really have any strong feelings for anyone in particular. Maybe. 👀👀
10. Have you ever used an Ouija board?
Nope, and I don’t plan on it.
11. What’s the last song you sang?
It was a song for choir this past semester, though I don’t remember the title that well or the composer.
12. What’s your favorite scent?
Never really had a favorite scent, honestly. My sense of smell has been pretty dull/weak for as long as I can remember and I’ve never really given much thought to any favorite scent.
13. What’s your favorite urban legend?
The Roswell UFO incident of 1947. It sparked my interest in aliens and UFOs at a very young age, and is probably responsible for a good deal of my love for sci-fi.
14. What’s a bad habit that you have?
Poor self control when it comes to time management. I tend to let myself get absorbed in things.
15. What’s a strange habit that you have?
Hmm. Totally blanked and could only come up with “making noises and pretending to be a mech of some sort when moving around my house”. That’s all I got.
16. What’s the first instrument you learned to play?
Piano. I started learning at 8 years old.
17. How would you describe your ‘type’?
Y’know funny enough I’ve never really thought I had a type. However reaching my mid-twenties has made me realize that my ‘type’ is kind, compassionate, goofy, and nerdy/geeky.
18. Would you rather stay in or go out?
Depends on the company, I guess. Though, usually I prefer to stay in anyway.
19. What was the last thing you said to your mom?
“I’m taking Dax out.” When I went for a walk with my dog lol.
20. Do you want to get married someday?
Definitely didn’t used to. I’m at the point where I’d be down if my partner wanted to, though I’m not sure I’d wanna spend a shitload of money on a wedding. Guess it depends on financial status at the time and the preferences of my partner.
21. Have you ever snuck out?
Nah, though I never needed to. My parents typically let me leave house whenever I wanted to as long as I told them who I’m with and when-ish I’m going to be home.
22. Can you sing well?
I can match pitch pretty well, but I can’t produce pitch un-aided. Usually. So kinda. I’m ok at best, all things considered.
23. What’s an embarrassing thing that happened this week?
I went off on some of my friends over something kinda silly because my mental state as of late hasn’t been all that great.
24. When was the last time you went sledding?
Uhhh, definitely more than ten years ago.
25. Have you ever liked/do you like someone you know you can never be with?
You kidding me? That’s like, all of my crushes ever. Maybe that’s an exaggeration but honestly it’s certainly FELT that way each time.
26. Do people often mispronounce your name?
No, though I have known a few people throughout my life that said “Bin” rather than “Ben”. I eventually realised it was an accent thing and stopped giving a shit very early.
27. Would you like to live in another country?
Yes, actually. For no small number of reasons. I’ve always wanted to live in Italy ever since I visited when I was 15.
28. Do you like to watch ghost hunting shows?
I definitely used to. I don’t really watch tv much in general anymore, though.
29. Who was the last person you said “I love you” too?
My mom.
30. What’s something you’d like to be better at?
Social interaction. Speaking in general. I’m MUCH more articulate in writing/typing than I am speaking.
31. Have you ever stayed up with someone who was sad?
Yes, and I’m always willing to do so.
32. What was the last thing you cooked?
I helped my good friend prepare some bomb ass ramen a few months back. I guess that counts.
33. Do you think you’d make a good parent?
I’d like to think so, yeah. I would make sure my children know I’m always there for them and will support the hell out of them.
34. Do you have trouble sleeping at night?
I don’t, but my dipshit body does.
35. Where is your best friend right now?
All of them are either playing video games or asleep.
36. How long does it take you to get ready in the morning?
Factoring in every aspect of the morning ritual, about 40 minutes. That’s if I’m going somewhere like work or school. If I’m staying home then there’s no getting ready for anything but sitting on my ass lol.
37. How late do you usually stay up at night?
Depends on the time of year/what I’m doing the next day. Right now during quarantine I average anywhere between 2am and 6am. I’m trying to fix that currently.
38. When was the last time you cried and why?
The last time I truly cried was sometime in 2015. I was listening to Breaking Benjamin’s latest album and feeling exceedingly lonely/depressed. It wasn’t a great day.
39. Have you ever won a contest?
None that I can remember, honestly.
40. Can you draw well?
Lol. No. I have very little visual artistic talent or skill.
41. Would you ever date someone you met on tumblr/the internet?
Definitely, though obviously I wouldn’t just jump right in. I’m down for long distance relationships, too. But obviously mutual trust and emotional connection would have to be established first.
42. What was the last thing you ate?
Some brownie fudge M&Ms lol.
43. Do you think you’re/you’d make a good boyfriend?
I don’t really know. Never been in a relationship so I don’t have anything go off of. On the one hand I’m super understanding, laid back, and accepting of boundaries. I just want to make sure people feel comfortable and safe around me. On the other hand I’m also forgetful and very selfish when it comes to my time. I also obviously have plenty of emotional trauma/baggage (who doesn’t?) that tends to impede how I interact with people, so. đŸ€·đŸŒâ€â™‚ïž
44. Have you ever had a near death experience?
Not that I can remember, and I hope I never do. The closest I think I ever came was when I fell off a ropeless bridge into a dry riverbed at 4 years old. Got a concussion from that.
45. What do you think people think of you?
Well, my anxiety tells me I’m annoying and boring. The logical side of me tells me most people in my life enjoy my company, so I guess there’s that.
46. What is your middle name and do you like it?
Don’t feel like sharing my middle name here, but I will say I don’t dislike it. Kinda neutral.
47. Are you close with either of your parents?
Kinda. My parents were often emotionally distant/abusive to my brothers and me growing up, and it’s left me rather stunted emotionally, and generally unwilling to establish a deeper relationship with them. We’re a bit closer than we were when I was a teenager, but honestly not much.
48. Do you like yourself?
Generally speaking? No. There are parts of me I’m proud of, but honestly I often find myself wishing I was someone else. I’m far from the self-loathing I experienced when I was younger, though.
49. State five facts about your appearance—
1. I’m 6’1”-ish.
2. Definitely just a bit chubby.
3. Blue eyes.
4. Currently sporting longer hair because I haven’t had a haircut since about September.
5. I have a number of faded scars on my arms from various self inflicted/work related injuries. All of them were caused by extreme clumsiness/poor spacial awareness.
50. State five facts about your personality—
1. I’m super goofy—I make lots of weird noises and motions.
2. I tend to ramble about things I’m interested in, particularly hyper fixations.
3. I like to think I’m a pretty compassionate human being.
4. Extremely awkward, but strangely that doesn’t show because I’m apparently a social chameleon.
5. I’m an observer, but also an overthinker.
Whew, that was a lot! Thank you, friend!

I love my scarf so much. I did not actually wear it outside at the house. I wear a jacket. But I've had that scarf on pretty much all day. It is the best scarf even if it sheds a lot.
Today was a good day I did not accomplish everything I wanted to accomplish but I did a lot. I slept really well last night. Had very bizarre dreams. But I got up and felt good. I woke up and had biscuits for breakfast. Got dressed and walk to the grocery store. I brought my grandma card and bought lots of food for the week. I am trying to eat at home more this week. Especially since my hours are very weird. I wandered around for a bit and then went home. I am packed everything and then I had it over to Eddie's to get a couple things I can't get at streets Market. I biked over to Eddie's though and was only there for a couple minutes. I still need to get milk and I'll probably have to get eggs at some point but for now it's fine. I used my heart boiled egg cooker to while I was gone and didn't check the eggs but I'm assuming they're okay. I'm very excited about my hard-boiled egg maker though and I really hope that I can figure out the best time frame to leave them in there to cook.
Once I got everything unpacked I made lunch. I rested for a little while and made some plans. And then I headed out to go catch the bus. I left a little bit earlier than I really need to because I wanted to get the earlier bus just in case. I think I am going to be able to get away with getting the 12:30 bus. But just so that I get used to when I'm getting off going 20 minutes early. It's nice that that bus runs so often though.
It was nice and sunny out. There's a chill in the air but I was never uncomfortable or anything. In either direction. Hot or cold. I had a nice talk with an old man at the bus stop. And then the bus came. And it was a nice ride. It's like a 25-minute ride and it's very comfortable. I got up to Wildwood and like I said I was like a half an hour early. So I walked around the neighborhood.
The neighborhood very much reminds me of Mayfair in Philadelphia. It's mostly row houses with little front yards. Lot of Old Stone. In the direct neighborhood it's all houses in churches. There's not even a corner store. I think maybe at some point I'll try to wander out a little bit farther and see if there's somewhere to eat. Now that I really plan on it but just in case something happens and I have to get something close by.
When I got there Fitsum was already there and said that Tiffany wasn't in yet. So we sat in the waiting room and talked. We accidentally both were wearing the same outfit. Well not exactly. We're both wearing brown jackets and are in shirts. And I made us laugh. It seems like we are going to be together but it's still unclear at this point. I hope we do though because he's a sweetheart. Tiffany came and found us because it turned out she was there. But it was no big deal. We went back to your office and did a bunch of paperwork. Went through how are lesson plan is going to work. And I feel so excited about it. I was pretty nervous at first but now that all my questions are answered I'm like excited. And I have so many ideas. I've written 8 months of vague themes and topics in my tablet. I think I'm just going to keep everything on my Google Drive since now I paid for it for the year anyway. I was considering getting a Chromebook since I'm going to have to be doing a lot of writing. But instead since my tablet doesn't work very well I just decided to buy a Bluetooth keyboard for it. So that should be here on Thursday. And then I can actually do my lesson plans for real. I feel very excited.
We just did a lot of going through packets and making sure all of our paperwork was good and it was just nice to be able to honestly answer questions and not have to feel silly for wanting clarity. I got my direct deposit setup and we have to take 15 hours of professional development courses over the school year. And so she help me setup my account for that. And I was able to get into the CPR first aid training class on Friday morning. So I get my first three hours of PD in and I'm excited to have that certificate my record. Even though it was a little bit of a hassle trying to figure out how to make an account for some reason. They make it like all secret like.
After we finished all of her paperwork and spent a lot of time discussing how things go. We did another walk around the building. This time we actually got to meet the other teachers that we may be working with or will be the team with the 5th graders. They were both really nice and I would be equally as excited to work with them. I think it might be nice though to have a blank slate with the new class with fitsum and there won't be a weird power Dynamic there. Of having a current teacher and a new teacher. But regardless the students were there too. They were all so sweet. They liked my jacket and they asked me if I could teach him how to sew and they asked me about other different projects that they were interested in doing. And it was just so cool they were so engaged and so sweet. I'm really excited to get to work with them. There was a couple big personalities but in the best ways. I'm very excited for this opportunity. I really think that this is going to be the exact thing I've been looking for. The rest of my jobs and lives are going to have to sort themselves out. Maybe I'll slow down my work at the BMI and take my mornings for myself. Or maybe I won't and maybe I'll still do exactly what I'm doing now. I just don't want to burn out. I want to really enjoy being able to teach and museums and do all the things that I do. But today really made me excited for going forward.
Fitsum was nice enough to give me a ride again. I'm going to have to figure out a way to tell him I will give him money. Because him giving me a ride back is saving me like $16 every time. It's like even if I throw him like 20 bucks a week or something. It would be worth it to me. You also just lose them walking into my apartment though so I think he just it is being kind and just giving you rides. But I don't want to take advantage he's so nice. I really just hope that we become friends too cuz I think he's a really cool guy. He was telling me some about working in Ethiopia and the culture there. And I'm curious to learn more.
Once I got home I have kind of a going back and forth doing things all night. I watched the new Shane Dawson documentary series. And I ate snacks. I've been eating snacks all night. I work in my studio for a while. I played with the new Furbys. They both had some corrosion inside of them from their batteries leaking so I had to clean that up with vinegar. But they're both working just fine and they were chatting with each other. They do make that high-pitched screeching sound that I read about. So I may take them apart and disconnect the wires. Honestly I might disconnect all of their speaking wires because I'm not super a fan of their voices. But I still think they're very cute. I like the way that they move they're very active. So I think painting with them is going to be really interesting.
I talked to James for a little while he's at his apartment having a D&D night. I think I just have too much social anxiety to participate. I told him I would be a guest are at some point but I just don't know if I could play with them and feel comfortable enough to do it. But we'll see I don't know. I like doing it one on one with James that one time though I hope we can do that again cuz I did enjoy that.
I did fall down the stairs. I hurt my hand a little bit but I'm okay. I mostly just scared me. I took a shower and wash my hair. And it's just chilling at my apartment and I'm wearing Chenille socks and leggings and I feel very cozy. I think I'm going to switch my stuff for work into my new work tote bag. That I have gotten from my causebox. It's such a pretty bag and I think it's going to be perfect for carrying all my papers and things. And it stands so I feel like if it gets paint on it and stuff it'll be cool. I think now though I'm going to start winding down for bed. I have to wake up early tomorrow and try to get some more done. And then I have to go over to Northern Parkway to get my fingerprints done for the city to get an ID and a background check. And then I have to go to Wildwood at 12:30 for staff meeting. I'm very excited for that I think it's going to be very fun. I'm excited too more formally meet everyone. So I hope it's just another really nice day. I hope you guys all have a great night and sleep well. Be safe out there. Be kind

Car Insurance for Teens?
"Car Insurance for Teens?
What can we expect for a 16 year old to pay on a monthly base if he has his OWN insurance (as in not co-insured with the parents). Can I afford motorcycle insurance?
So here is my situation: I currently own a 2003 Toyota Matrix that I make payments on. In between the payments and the insurance and gas, it costs about $350 a month to have that car. For the last couple years I've been really interested in getting a motorcycle, specifically a newer Kawasaki. According to my research, I could find a Kawasaki Ninja 250cc for somewhere around $3000. My question is basically how much insurance do I need? Right now I have comprehensive coverage for my car so that if I'm in a wreck and it's totaled I can replace it. If I had a bike AND my car though, I don't want replacement coverage for a secondary vehicle (even one as cool as a motorcycle). I got quotes from Geico and State Farm that put my minimum amount of insurance a month in the neighborhood of around $30. Does this sound accurate to anyone? Also, can anyone just give me some sound advice about owning both vehicles and whether it's worth it?""

I tried trading it in a few weeks ago and they only wanted to give me $5000, I'm glad I didn't take that one. I purchased the GAP insurance thru the dealership. Do you think Allstate will just total it and let the GAP insurance pay the balance of my loan. I'm really really upside down. Why would an insurance company deny me coverage for not having central air and heating?
We wanted to switch from the local company we had been insuring our house with because their correspondance has always been very rude and they are very difficult to deal with to USAA who we do all of our banking, brokerage, car & boat insurance through and are very courteous and extremely easy to deal with. We were denied coverage because our home does not have central air or heating. We live in South Central Florida so a heating system would be an absolute waste of money (the wall unit in the Great Room and a space heater in the bedroom are more than sufficient to make the house hospitable in the few welcome days of winter cold enough to warrant their use). My wife and I both cannot stand Air Conditioning and would never use Central A/C other than the one or two times a year we would normally turn on our wall unit when it is too hot to bear and the windows and doors cannot be left open. Houses have existed for Milleniums prior to the invention of Central Climate Control and I am sure home insurance existed atleast a few decades before the invention of air conditioning. Why would not having central climate control be a disqualifying factor in getting home insurance coverage? I highly doubt that not having A/C or heat is going to make our house any more likely to be damaged or destroyed in a hurricane, robbed or flooded. Opening the windows and doors instead of having a HVAC system consistantly running in our house makes us less suseptable to fire.""
Named driver had crash. Should I tell my car insurance?
Last year my girlfriend has a car crash, she was not at fault. So she didn't tell her insurance company and claimed of the other party. So she is assuming her car insurance does not know. Now I am looking to get insured on my first car. If I add her to my insurance as a named driver the premium is about 200 less. The problem is she doesn't want me to tell the insurance company that she crashed, as they asked has the named driver crash. I am now worried I were to crash, they would see she had crashed and void the insurance. I am tempted just to get my insurance in my name and pay the extra 200 for peace of mind. She will not under any circumstance tell her insurer she crashed as she thinks her premiums will rise. But I have found out that the insurance companies have a database of all claims, so they can easily find out that she has crashed. She refused to allow me to put on my application for insurance that she has crashed. What to do?""

Do you know of any auto insurance companies that don't base your rates on your credit report?
Due to an illness/ disability in our family, despite having health insurance, we still owe thousands in medical bills. Those that would not work with us turned them into collection. They now show on our credit report. Despite being insured for both our auto insurance and our home insurance for 20+ year with the same insurance company, we got a notice saying our auto insurance had gone up hundreds of dollars per year based on a credit report they obtained. We have never had an accident, ticket, etc. and the amount automatically comes out of our checking each month. Plus, last year, prior to this, they switched us to a preferred group within the company and gave us a discount when we threatened to switch. How can I find out which insurance companies base your insurance rates on your credit report and or score? Will they tell you outright? This is the first I have ever known that our company did this and was wondering if all of them do it, or do you just know about it when you get a notice like we did? I get their reasoning but it seems like such a rip off when so many are in our boat- insured but with insurance that is starting to pay less and less and cost more. Plus, they have our checking account and if we were not to pay, they wouldn't be responsible for us if we had an accident anyway. Seems like a double whammy to me. Can anyone help?""

Ok, I was being a complete jackass at that time in my life and figured I would deal with it when the time comes. Well, its that time. I finally got my license back and went to buy a cheap used car. The dealer told me he cant get me plates for it cause I have a violation due to a fine for driving uninsured. The fine is off the charts, $4,455.00. Has anyone ever gotten the MVA to reduce this fee or waive it. I havent tried yet. They offer payment plans at 20% down and the rest must be paid within 2 years. I dont want to do anything illegal per say but just wanted to know if anyone has any ideas. I know, im a jackalope for letting this happen. anyone, let me know""
Need advice on qualifying for subsidized health insurance?
I'm an older full-time college student and my husband works full-time at Walmart. In the past three years, I've been through 4 cancer related surgeries, which were paid for by the breast/cervical cancer Medicaid program. Unfortunately, follow up care and monitoring aren't covered and I was dropped from Medicaid. I'm now on my husband's health insurance, which is basically worthless because our income is under $20,000/yr and the policy has a $4500 deductible plus 20% after. I haven't seen my oncologist for over a year because we can't afford the expensive scans, biopsies, and lab work associated with cancer follow-up with a deductible that high. I thought my situation would change in 2014 with Obamacare. I recently learned from the healthcare.gov website calculator that our income is low enough to qualify for expanded Medicaid (which our state decided not to expand), but I don't qualify for the health insurance subsidies I desperately need because the outrageous deductible health insurance from my husband's job covers spouses. How can a couple with an income so low they would qualify for expanded Medicaid be ineligible for subsidies? I am completely devastated over this and I don't know what to do. Not being able to afford cancer follow up care is putting my life in danger. Even if my husband's employer (Walmart) quit covering the spouses of full-time employees, I think that would only apply to new hires because of the grandfather clause. If getting subsidies was based on income alone the way it should be instead of access to employer provided coverage, I would qualify for a zero deductible policy and $3 co-pays with a monthly premium of around $60. I could then afford the expensive health care I need. We live in a college town so if my husband got a different job, he'd make even less than he does now and we would probably end up homeless. If my husband transfers and we move to a state that's expanding Medicaid, I'll have to quit school and get rid of my German Shepherd and Siberian Husky since it's almost impossible to find a landlord that allows them. We thought another option might be to get a divorce on paper and co-habitate until our situation changes (completing my degree and getting a good job so I can afford the deductible), then re-marry. When I asked about that, someone actually accused me of wanting to commit fraud! How can anyone think of something like fraud when a situation is endangering someone's life? I am desperate to somehow qualify for health insurance subsidies without lying, which could get us in trouble. Any ideas?""

10 - (It’s okay to not be okay)
One of my new year resolution last year was to be engaged in a new hobby or physical activity. After doing some research, I found Electric Studio, the first indoor cycling boutique in the Philippines offering a full-body fitness experience. Indoor cycling is a low-impact cardio and strength exercise using a stationary bike. The activity was perfect for me since I am into biking. The class runs 45 minutes to 1 hour. What sets Electric studio apart from regular cycling is the intense background music playing while on the cycle. There is a trainer that will guide the class through the cycling process. How you would cycle would depend on the beat of the music set by the trainer. In a minute, the beat could be fast, and the next minute, you are going slow to match the beat.
The activity somehow made me relate it to where I currently am in my life. I am in my late 20's, presently grinding my way to finish my MBA to move on to my next life goal. Sometimes, it feels like I'm on a roller coaster ride when I hustle fast to make it big before reaching 30. At the same time, it feels like I am on a slow-moving ride when I see my counterpart friends getting promoted or engaged/married or buying their first car/house, which is the norm for people my age. I know the twenties are about experimenting in doing so much of everything because we don't know who we want to be. While some are lucky to have found it at an early age, I am one of those people who have yet to discover it. I used to freak out so much about it. I worried a lot about my future - will I live a comfortable life? Will I manage to get out and live on my own? Will I ever reach the corporate position I've been eyeing for as long as I can remember?  Will all my efforts lead to somewhere or be in vain? Although having a complete identity crisis is normal to be thought of, it never gets easy every time I think about it. I am young but not that young anymore where I can afford to live a carefree life.
Instead of worrying, I resolved to enjoy the fast and slow rides and accept where I am now. It may sound easy as I say it, but it took me many months before I chose to let everything go and trust the Lord in the process. Ultimately, it was one of the best decisions I have made - to ignore everything around me and focus on myself and my goal. Like cycling, how I ride my life would depend on the beat I choose to have every day. I attract positive things when my energy is positive. I'm glad to say I have reached the point in life where I learned not to compare myself to anyone, to shut down social media if I think it will not do any good for me anymore, especially when I see people brag about what they have that I can't have. It's not about the possibility of getting jealous but rather about allowing myself to enjoy what I have. I learned it's okay if I can't keep up with the beat. What matters is I am still on the ride and going at a pace I am comfortable riding. I will get there, eventually. Life will turn out the way I want it exactly, just wait and remember life is good for all those who believe.

Postcard to S
Last night I decided to walk home in pouring rain for no reason other than to enjoy myself. My thoughts were rolling around in my head until they turned into things that might sound good on a postcard, but I actually feel a bit like being alone and don’t want to write you another postcard. I’ve only written you two but really I’m always writing you postcards.
My thoughts amuse me because writing someone a postcard is actually the most solitary one-sided action you can do, though it feels incredibly intimate while you’re writing one and while you’re reading one. Anyways. I guess I’ve been enjoying whatever slight isolation I have placed myself in. I’m listening to lots of modal jazz and letting memories from long ago float into my head when they choose to do so. I am treating my skin to a complicated skin-care regimen and enjoying myself. I am making very short playlists in which I’m incredibly picky about what goes in, or not picky at all and just chuck songs in based on a theme I know only I will understand. Here are the thoughts I had last night as best as I can remember them.
ïżœïżœâ€“â€“â€“â€“â€“
Last Christmas I received two very important gifts: noise-cancelling headphones and a down jacket. The category of clothing that I’ve been luckiest with coming across in thrift stores has always been jackets. I am a big fan of a Great Jacket, and love the ones I have collected. My down jacket, however, I think is quite ugly. It is not classic or romantic or anything other than ridiculously practical. My favorite thing about this jacket is that it allows me to do whatever I want regardless of weather, to the extent that I am able to enjoy awful weather for its romance rather than its reality.
I asked for this jacket because I had grown fed up with biking back from work filled with adrenaline because of how cold it was. I remember once, after a February field-trip to the Hague clad in a jean jacket, biking back from the central station to our front gate in 12 minutes. I seriously considered which one of my hands I should sacrifice, because I seriously believed my hands were numb enough to stop functioning forever (I chose my left hand).
I discovered the wonders of my down jacket last January. I miss my job partly because of how pleasant it feels to be both adult and a bit lonely in a city. I loved cycling to the cinema after work and watching whatever movie was playing. I would get a beer or a hot chocolate and watch the last show of the day, whatever it was. I think I only did this maybe two or three times but in my mind it was a discreet habit I indulged in without telling anyone about it. On this day, I emerged from the cinema past midnight when it was pouring buckets. I readied myself for an incredibly uncomfortable cycle home but discovered that I felt warm, dry, and hidden in my jacket. It was beautiful. I felt protected and invisible.
Today is a day in which it feels like it has been raining forever. Rain is coming down so hard that I can see small currents on the slanted sidewalks. I feel quite lonely in Seoul, but not in a way that makes me miss things too much. I guess I’m just a bit disappointed in myself lately. I find it hard to believe that I will see beauty in my past month when I consider this memory in the future. Mangwon is beautiful, Seoul is beautiful, I’m just tired.
I had dinner with my friends today. I had spent all day alone. I went all the way to Gangnam to buy serums for my skin. It took me about two hours there and back. I enjoyed this quite a lot. I’ve loved listening to Desert Island Disc’s because lately, my favourite way to discover new music is to find a personal ‘in’ on a song. I listened to an episode with John Cooper Clarke which made me think of you (and of me), but I had texted you so many times the night before that I decided to keep the thought to myself. He said some things about poetry that were really funny and relatable and he generally seemed very charming. My only objective of the day was to go to a few different stores to buy things for my skin. I found that when I allow myself to spend a certain amount of money, it feels quite nice to do so. I dislike Gangnam because it’s very disorienting. It is really flashy while also being impersonal and boring. I got out at Apgujeong, and it was already pouring rain. I passed the Hyundai department store, clad in Christmas decorations, trees and all, and felt quite nostalgic. Something about really fancy department stores makes me long for home, even when I know it’s just clever marketing. My home has absolutely nothing in common with a fancy department store, obviously.
An hour later, I met up with my friends in Hongdae. They were at a cafĂ© that owned two sheep. I felt quite sad for the sheep. Their enclosure was just a little wooden house. Of course, this looked quite charming until you thought about the fact that this is where they lived all day, all week. They were really cute but I felt far away from everything. I didn’t know what to do or how to act about the sheep. I hate the idea that they live underground in a small wooden house just to make the cafĂ© more trendy but feel strange criticizing it too much.
We walked around for a really long time trying to find somewhere to eat. It’s really difficult to find anything proper to eat past 9 in Seoul. I guess it’s like this everywhere. It feels weird though. The subway shuts off at midnight, and you can only find barbecue places past 8:30-9:30, but somehow the lights never go off anywhere and there are always people on the street. We walked in a huge circle, at least an hour. We actually walked all the way until we reached the outskirts of my neighborhood, but then someone finally figured out what was Good and Open and we turned around and walked 20 minutes in the opposite direction. After leaving everyone, I felt a bit funny. I like my friends but have been spending less and less time with them. I don’t really know why. I’m not spending time with anyone else instead. I missed my bus, and decided to walk the 40 minutes back even though it was pouring rain. I was wearing cheap sneakers that I bought for 5$, and my down jacket. I let my trousers become completely soaked, and my sneakers meant nothing to me regardless. I smoked a few cigarettes and took my time walking back, choosing the streets that I liked the most. I felt quite warm and safe, even if only on my upper half. I congratulated myself for wearing shoes that allowed me to walk in rain without worrying about their survival. Somehow this is what was most important. It felt really gentle to walk back all alone in the rain. I enjoyed listening to my thoughts. My phone ran out of battery about 15 minutes before my house and it reminded me of a clip I’d seen of Ryuichi Sakamoto in which he drops a microphone attached to a long stick deep into a hole in ice and says “I’m fishing for sound”. This was really charming and relatable, even if only idealistically. I liked the idea of figuring out what Seoul sounds like but nothing beautiful struck my mind. I guess what Seoul sounds like sometimes is the sound of someone spitting on the sidewalk outside of my window at 4 in the morning.
Hmm. I thought this would be quite romantic to write about but actually it was just quite boring. Oh well. Let me know if you come across this and read it. I hate that I’m not enjoying my time here more lately. I hate that I’m not doing anything about it. I miss home but don’t long to be back just yet. I just want to enjoy my life here more again.

"As you can see GM-1 can take all it wants from her...it hasn't touched her joy for life. She is amazing and teaches daily what true determination is all about. Jessie's the true hero, I just push the wheelchair," said her mother, Merlie.
By HEATHER DEAN Record Reporter
The 4th Annual Historic Wilkesborough Halloween Parade (HWHP) will take place on September 28, 2019 in the heart of downtown Wilkesboro. The Child Abuse Prevention Team/ Our House is this year’s chosen non-profit, and all funds raised through parade entries and vendor fees as well as through other fundraisers will go to this organization.
Every year, a local with a special story is chosen as the Grand Marshall. This year’s recipient is Jessica Jackson. She loves motorcycles, music, horses, and traveling- her favorite places so far being Disney World, NASCAR races,  App State football games and Pigeon Forge TN. She was diagnosed at 18 with gm-1 gangliosidosis; a disorder so rare that she is the only known child in NC with this diagnosis.
Gangliosidosis-1 (GM-1) is a progressive neurological genetic disorder caused by the absence of a vital enzyme. Jessie started showing signs around age 5, and slowly progressed to being totally dependent on her parents for all care around the clock. Jessie is now non verbal, in a wheelchair full time and unable to stand or walk
Speaking with Jessie’s mom, Merlie, she said it was an honor to have Jessie as the Grand Marshall for the parade this year. “She always has enjoyed watching parades over the years; this will be her first opportunity to be a member.” In her role as Grand Marshall, Jessie is dressing up as Sleeping Beauty, and her wheelchair will be turned into a Princess carriage.
“One thing Jessie has taught our family is that no matter what challenges life throws at you, giving up and losing HOPE is not an option, and that you always have the ability to help those around you. All a parent can ever dream of for their child is that they grow up and make their mark on the world and make it a better place for others and Jessie does that every day. Jessie is determined to LIVE life and it is our job as her parents to help her achieve that each day,” Merlie said. Jessie has been tubing down the Yadkin River, gone up in a hot air balloon, ridden horses and motorcycles since being confined to her wheelchair.
Jessie had been invited to be in the parade in years past, but it conflicted with Jessie's Ride of Hope, an annual benefit motorcycle ride with event proceeds going to the NTSAD (National Tay Sachs and allied diseases) research. “Each September across the country NTSAD families host their own "Day of Hope" events in their area to raise funds for the NTSAD but also to raise awareness for children like Jessie fighting a monster disorder that most people have never even heard of,” Merlie said. This year Jessie’s ride happens the weekend before the Halloween Parade, September 14.
Jessie’s Ride:
The idea of having a motorcycle benefit ride happened after the family moved to Wilkes  from Boone after Jessie graduated high school. Merlie said “We did not know anyone here; but because she loves motorcycles and music we started attending events at CrossRoads Harley Davidson and there Jessie not only found fun things to do, she found friends that quickly became her "Harley Family", and who accepted her and loved her unconditionally. When ever we would post her adventures on social media, other special needs families would say to us "We sure wish our child had biker buddies like Jessie" and that’s how the Facebook group “Riding for You” started.”
Her husband David suggested they create a Facebook group and match bikers to special needs individuals so every child could be blessed with "biker love" across the country.
Merlie said the group has been amazing and the start of several incredible friendships, with almost 2,000 around the world, including Italy, Norway, and even Australia, where the little girl there has GM-1 just like Jessie. .
Her Story:
As a child, before her disorder stole a lot of her abilities from her, Jessie loved going on adventures, like climbing to the top of the climbing wall at Footsloggers in Boone and ringing the bell at the top. Then she began to get clumsy, and her foot started turning inward.
It took 13 yrs of searching with several doctors and hospitals before she was successfully diagnosed by the National Insititute of Health (NIH), in Bethesda Maryland, which is the government's premier medical research facility, with a small group of scientists, led by Dr. William Gahl, devoted to unraveling and finding cures on only the hardest of the hard cases in the Undiagnosed Diseases Program; these are illnesses so rare they don't appear in any medical book. So far, Gahl and his team have solved cases eluding elite institutions across the U.S., discovered two new genetic diseases, with a dozen more under scientific review.
Jessie was featured on 60 minutes program “Hard Cases: Investigating rare & tough diseases” with Dr, Gahl. In the interview Dr Gahl’s definition of “rare” is different than the legal one. A rare disease in the United States is “one that affects fewer than 200,000 individuals out of the 350 million citizens” in the United States. To a scientist, that doesn’t classify as rare. He said “When we're talking about rare diseases, (it’s) affecting between one and 50 people in the world.”
Dr Gahl personally reviews 150 to 170 cases a year and decides who gets in and who gets rejected. Since genetic diseases often appear early in life, as they did with Jessie, 40 percent of the cases he accepts are children.
For nine years Jessie has been a vital part of their research for GM-1, and these recently lead to the first clinical trials for a cure. Although Jessie is too old to take part in the trials, she was integral in making it available for younger GM-1 patients. Her family holds onto the hope that soon the trials will expand to include the older children like Jessie fighting GM-1 so bravely.
Jessie is one of three across the globe with this disease that had outlived expectancy, and the only female. The oldest is Jorgen, 31, Eric, 29, and Jessie, who is now 27. When she was diagnosed at age 18 the NIH told her parents she would most likely pass within a few years, in her early 20’s.  At her visit this past January, they said they never dreamed she would make it to 27 years of age.
Jessie has faced two major surgeries this year which currently have her in three casts (one on her hand and two on her feet) Her feet were curling inward and her big toe was under her foot so surgery, fusing joints and inserting pins was needed to straighten it all out. The hope is when she is all healed there will be less day to day pain and she will be able to stand again and wear shoes. Her mom says she still gets up every day with a smile on her face and a twinkle in her eye ready to enjoy the day.
Even all this hasn’t stopped Jessie from doing a project to help children in the High Country by collecting stuffed animals to give to the Guardians of the Children of the High Country to give away at their events. “We recently attended one of their bike nights and they gave Jessie a cute little Harley bear and we witnessed the joy it bought her as well as the other animals given to other children attending, and saw a perfect chance for Jessie to make a positive difference,” Merlie said. Jessie will be delivering her second donations of stuffed animals to the Guardians on July 21 at their next bike night in Wilkesboro, and will continue collecting them throughout the summer. She has already sent five large bags to the group.

Day 20 - Isla Holbox
First bout of sickness I can’t properly heal myself!
1. My sleep last night was pretty rough, I think I’d gotten to the point of overtiredness so just couldn’t plus on top of this my left ear was aching! I have a feeling I’ve picked up an ear infection as there’s nothing else I can think of. Unfortunately I don’t have any specific medication for an ear infection with me (despite my epic levels of meds). Being on Holbox my preference is not to go to a doctor because they’re unlikely to speak English but I’ll go if needed once back in Playa. On the downside this means I won’t be properly swimming the next couple of days. Holbox is where you go to see / swim with the whale sharks with bow (June) being one of the better months for it. Despite the fact an ear infection pulls me out it’s not all that bad as from speaking to people who have been on trips the past 3 days, no whale sharks have been spotted. One couple said one was spotted (and despite them researching tours for being kind to the animals / suddenly it had 20 boats chasing - not my jam!). The locals think there’s been a change in the currents which has sent the whale sharks further out. So while I can’t do the activity I’m fairly ok given that it’s unlikely I would have seen the whale sharks anyway!
2. At like 9am I got up to get food. Still really craving fruit and veges, a smoothie bowl was what I was after. Unfortunately the main local place for this appeared to be shut but I found somewhere nearby with one of the menu. It honestly took nearly 100 years to be served (ok, an hour). This was due to them running on Island/Mexican time + because of my lack of Spanish I was a tad more ignored than other guests. After my bowl arrived the number of patrons increased. A solo girl came in and took the last seat at a bench directly in the sun. She looked like she was trying to avoid it, kept moving her seat etc. felt like being a good person so asked if she spoke English (turns out she was English) and offered for her to sit at the other seat of my table which was in the shade and had the fan on it. She was very much appreciative and then we ended up chatting till 11.30am! The cafe was very very slow in providing bills as well. Given the strength of the sun it was quite nice to chill! She noticed the band on my hand and turns out we’re staying at the same place (Tribu). Another girl from the hostel arrived in this time also to eat before we all headed back in together.
3. I wanted to face today properly rather than hiding in the shade as I had yesterday. While the girls had laundry and admin to do. I went back to my dorm and got my backpack, a sarong towel, togs and slapped on sunblock/bug spray. After getting everything together I wandered 5 minutes into town and bought some Doritos and a cookie (healthy living everyone). I then walked approximately 2km to Punta Cocos, one of the most western points on the island. I tried to do most of the walk via the beach but there were a few areas this wasn’t possible and so I walked the road instead (adding time between beach and road a couple would’ve increased the KM). Once there not much to do, it’s just a beach! So I lay down my sarong towel for some napping and reading. After napping and reading for ages I noticed a guy who was taking photos had a top which said ‘sweet as bro’. Probably the most quintessential kiwi saying ever. I asked if he and his friend spoke English (yes but they were German) but turns out he’d travelled NZ with KiwiExperience and was wearing a top from this. The front of the top also said ‘handle the jandal’! A lot of Kiwi in one top. Given the amount I’ve chatted to random people in the past day, I’m starting to realise I am my fathers daughter!
4. From Punta Cocos I had wanted to head to Punta Citicote. This is the marsh areas at the bottom of the island. There’s a dirt road that takes you there. I think most people hire bikes but I was on my feet and they were the most practical way to get there for me at the time. I got about half way there from Punta coco but unfortunately had to stop. There was a puddle the size of a wee lake preventing me going further. While I could’ve braved going over, I’m aware that there are crocodiles and other animals in the marsh areas and given the water had risen they could come further in. Probably not worth the risk given I was off beaten track with no one knowing where I was (sorry mum/dad!). So instead I backtracked and then walked along the beach again (hopefully) building on my tan before arriving at Tribu. I’ve read online that when it rains on Holbox the streets all flood as it just doesn’t have the systems to cope. I chilled in the hammocks for a while and was eventually joined by the English girls I’d had breakfast with (Micky and Grace for future reference if they keep making appearances!). Micky had gone to the shops for a mango on her way and I ended up following suit and getting one not much later (delicious!) before wandering down to the beach from 6-8pm for sunset and to read.
5. Back at the hostel I realised the bus to Playa for Wednesday was sold out so cemented my plans to go to Valladoid for a night before onto Playa del Carmen (still allowing for a day at Akumal). Moving a bit faster than I’d like but I can chill in July once the next tour is over. Annoyingly the internet here isn’t very good but I managed to book a ticket/pay for it but unfortunately I don’t have a ticket - it never sent to my email or the app (despite paying). So in the morning I’ll do it on the hostels wired computer and pay whatever is needed for them to print the ticket. As I was chilling doing this a girl I had previously met came over. The first day I got here I said out loud how it would be cool to hire a bike and then at 6am bike to the other side of the island. Anyway she was there when I said it and is deadset on the plan. However with my ear how it is I just want to rest more. In case I’m in pain (as I am now) I don’t really want to commit to anything. While I was happily going to do it on my own I don’t know if she’s of the same vain (and subsequently I kinda feel bad for not going (I don’t even know her name!!) I do hope she gets up to do it herself. It’s only a 30 minute walk to if I’m up before 8am I’ll do it that way instead. Anyway after all this I ended up wandering to go get dinner on my own. They popped me at a big table where a couple was sitting. When my food came the couple was super interested in my food (I had a quesadilla and mollettes) so ended up chatting to them for the rest of my dinner - they were from Germany (same as couple from earlier today, said they loved NZ too). How lucky am I to call it home. Every time I go to a beach (they’re white snad but not so fluffy here) it reminds me how good we have it in NZ!

Note
all 100, if not that then the first 50
I think I have a lot of time, let’s do all of them.  1: Is there a boy/girl in your life? Maybe, we’ll see with time.2: Think of the last person who hurt you; do you forgive them? I forgive them, they’re in a rough spot right now and even though it was an impulsive lashing out, it’s okay.3:Grab the book nearest to you, turn to page 23, give me line 17. At the time, the volleyball coach, Seonwoo, was well-known in Korean volleyball history.4: What’s something you really want right now? See question 1.5: Are you afraid of falling in love?I don’t think so, I’m more afraid of what happens after.6: How can I win your heart?Be a good person and we’ll see how it goes, but I don’t need it to be won right now.7: Have you ever slept on a couch with someone else?Somehow fell asleep for about 10 minutes, woke up, didn’t even realize I was sleeping. I was only able to know because of the other person telling me.8: What’s the background on your cell?A dark background with some blue lines and a white light in the center, trying to take advantage of my AMOLED screen. New backgrounds are welcome.9: Name the last four beds you were sat on?This questions is phrased confusingly. The four beds I sat on? My own, the own in my dorm, my parents’, and the person’s dorm bed from question 1, 4, and 7.10: Think of the last person who said I love you, do you think they meant it?That was a half a year ago. Them being my parents.18: If you had to delete one year of your life completely, which would it be?Sophomore year.19: Would you ever consider getting back together with any of your exes?No20: When did you last talk to the last person you shared a kiss with?Today :)21: If you knew you had the right person, would you marry them today?I’m really indecisive so something like marriage would take me years, luckily that’s expected before a proposal.22: Would you kiss the last person you kissed again?Yeah.23: When was the last time you were disappointed? On Sunday because of my own musicianship.24: Is there a certain quote you live by?Too many quotes and I don’t want to live by the words of others.25: What’s on your mind?Filling out these questions.26: Do you have any tattoos? No, and I don’t think I want one, but if I have to, I would have “李“ orÂ â€œéŸ“ć±±æŽâ€ on my right shoulder, chest, or back. Perito Moreno to El Chaltén, Argentina. 2/13/17.
[still no wifi sufficient for pictures so continued words only today
] The above itinerary was at least the original plan
Most riders were ready to go by 7 AM today since we have a 589 km day slated. A simple breakfast and we headed out of the small town under crystal blue skies. We have been ever so fortunate in the weather department and I expected rain at least half our days. We’ve only had one wet day so far. There is a lot of mining around here. Yesterday we stopped to look over a big coal mining operation in Chile. Now on the Argentinian side they are mining gold. The lush green we had in Chile and forests are now replaced by endless scrub. Amazingly this Argentinian “pampa” covers a huge portion of Argentina. It is not desert as it has steady vegetation, but hardly anything taller than 12-18" high. AndrĂ©s says much of the 4000 kilometers towards Buenos Aires is this type of terrain. Rain is uncommon but there is some and there are some lakes and creeks. Due to the very consistent strong winds and extreme cold in winter there are basically no trees at all. Occasionally in a protected dip we have seen a tree grow naturally while all others were nurtured through their fragile youth by an attentive rancher so as to later provide a wind break and shade for the few and far between houses out here. Mostly there is just scrub, popping up like warts defiantly from the earth, endlessly to the rolling scrub covered hills in the distance. What is new today is wildlife. Within 20 minutes of leaving Perito Moreno we encountered our first groups of guanaco. Pronounced with the accent on the second syllable. These lama like animals bound with ease over the sheep/cow fencing and graze wantonly along the road and in the pampa. We all must be careful as they can jump in front of a bike or the Jeep with little warning. They seem to congregate in family groups and are on the lookout for eagles who prey on the babies. We saw our first few pink flamingos today, just wading in a small pond on a ranch by the road. We also came across our first ñandu. The ñandu is some sort of close cousin to the ostrich, but only slightly smaller. One valley we crossed before Bajo Caracoles was so wide, it was like “Big Sky” country south! At the gas station/hotel/souvenir shop in Bajo Caracoles (which means low snail 🐌) we all stopped for a coffee and to admire the gas pumps plastered in stickers from around the world. The roads are in great shape and we hardly saw any cars all day long. We are told that from here southward traffic will be sparse except in the towns. We saw many more guanaco today than vehicles.
About 30 miles past the coffee break, we passed a lot more guanacos and a few families of ñandus when AndrĂ©s noticed the Jeep was steaming. The temperature gauge showed normal in the middle of the gauge but steam was bellowing out the drivers side of the hood. (Bonnet for those of you reading in Australia as I understand there are a few! 🇩đŸ‡ș) I had watched him add water this morning to the radiator reserve tank. It turns out that this plastic tank had a leak two years ago and was patched on the outside with epoxy or J-B weld. Apparently that patch has given way under the barrage of chassis jolts we have encountered. As I am writing this (unusually) in real time we have been here for a bit over 2 Âœ hours and gone through 3 different “welding” attempts with JB weld. Four motorists have stopped and donated water to the cause. After the second repair, it was much worse with water literally spraying all over AndrĂ©s face in second checking out the leak. Our mechanic, Rodrigo is very busy and we are hoping that this next patch will help. The steam which is escaping from about a 2" seam around the equatorial circumference of where this plastic tank was once joined in a factory is a difficult animal to cage. I suggested after the first failure to run a bead along the inside of the weld. An internal, oversized plug has a much better chance of success in a high pressure situation than a patch does on the outside of resisting steam that has already gained momentum and escaped the tank. I think that both have been done on this last repair effort but I now see the satellite phone in our leaders hands and the mention of a restaurant being 20 km’s away
The support vehicle has never failed this somewhat new outfit before (in its 7th year) and the backup plan is to get a replacement truck somewhere somehow if the tank isn’t able to be repaired
we’ll see and hopefully this patch holds! OK, so we made it about 8 km’s maybe (Cheryl says 6) and the oil light came on. Interestingly, the water gauge shows normal but a quick perusal under the bonnet shows continued water leak (oil is fine go figure) and now AndrĂ©s says we have big trouble. Murphy’s law is in full effect as this happens on our biggest day and about as far from anywhere as we could be. We are now on the satellite phone seeking assistance
I usually jot down the day’s highlights here as I am heading to la-la land, I have chosen an interesting day to “live blog”. Of course we are a hundred miles from any cell service but I can at least write down in real time what is happening. As of now (3PM, 4 Âœ hrs.) we are awaiting the arrival of a flatbed tow truck coming 100+ miles from Perito Moreno arranged by the hotel Americano. The Ride Adventure team is attempting repair #4 in the meantime having completely removed the radiator’s reserve tank and effected more “inside” epoxy work. It seems weird that the Jeep’s design includes a high pressure water tank as a reserve which is strangely (read cheaply) manufactured from two pieces of plastic instead of a one step molding. 😐 A few more folks have stopped and it seems we have garnered enough water to attempt to refill and test the latest repair effort. We are about 15 km’s from a parador/restaurant and I hear clamps tightening
We have had some chips and Cheryl has delved into the “bickies” and cheese. It seems I am picking up all sorts of Aussie terms. Bickies are biscuits down under.
Repair #4 did not work. 😐. It will be about 3 Âœ hours since we called for a truck and nearly six since we first got stuck in 10 minutes time. Cheryl and I are planning to hitchhike to the parador where we can get food and baños and await the tow truck. It will be a first for her and some time since I have hitched. Much more emphasis on the Adventure then the Ride today. We tried once again to make it down the road by jumping the now near dead battery with my jumper (POD) battery I brought for just such an occasion. Didn’t get but a few more km’s and things started smoking and we pulled over again. No hitchhiking today for us since the tow truck pulled up just as we were still spraying water and steam out into the parched pampa. Now we are in the cab of a flatbed truck on the way about 130 km’s to Gobernador Gregores. We believe there is someone there who has the capability to fix the leaky water tank. 🙏 The adventure continues. So we have now arrived in Gobernador Gregores about 8 hours behind schedule. We found our way to a nice Hosteria and are currently awaiting the plan for the rest of the trip. If the radiator reserve is repairable we continue with the Jeep but it seems AndrĂ©s is working on a replacement vehicle for the remaining legs to Ushuaia. Not much except a few snacks today so we are anxiously awaiting the kitchen’s opening for dinner (cena)! Hopefully everyone ahead of us has had an uneventful day on their bikes. Nice to be inside and out of the constant wind here. Buenos noches.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/El_Chalt%C3%A9n As a postscript to yesterday we found one bike on the road. It had a flat tire and we loaded it up onto the trailer, now towed by a new truck (Toyota Hilux) driven by a new guy Fernando who joins us for a few days? We then stopped in Tres Lagos to see if Martin was OK. Turns out he was OK and had eventually left the bike as darkness fell and the support truck was nowhere to be found. In town (still no phone signal) the police let AndrĂ©s use their wifi and we found that one of the other guys (George) had fallen off and broke his clavicle and a rib. Apparently they had hidden the bike and gotten him to a hospital at the next day’s destination, El Calafate as there was a hospital there. So it ended up being quite the day, with Murphy’s law in effect as the riders needed the support truck which itself is now history. The Jeep engine is blown. What we thought was high pressure in the reserve water tank was only due to a “buggered” engine and the engine’s compression was being delivered through the water system due to blown seals and gaskets. Ugh. AndrĂ©s is working on a third vehicle to rent in a few days time for now we have the trailer hitched up to the Toyota. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fitz_Roy

Journaling and Prompts
Journals are notebooks in which students record their thoughts on various topics.  They are useful in the classroom if teachers have students write in them on a regular basis.  They are not diaries in which students record the daily events of their lives.  They are places where students can record thoughts and opinions.  Many teachers use a journal writing activity to start the class.  Others use journals to record student reflections on their own learning.  Whatever the use, journals allow students to practice "thinking with a pencil," an activity that helps them become more critical thinkers.
