17. Talk to me about the minutiae of your current WIP. Tell me about the lore, the history, the detail, the things that won’t make it in the text.

Okay, so I basically wrote down all of the notes I have for The Man Who Became The Hunger in this ask here, so I'm just gonna talk about the Julia Survives Ravens Roost AU! :D

So, that first link that has the information about The Man Who Became the Hunger also has information about the Julia fic further down, and in that one, I talk about Julia possibly meeting Lich Barry before the Wonderland mission. Then this ask talks about Julia’s relationship with Leon and the story behind my decision to make her Fighter then multiclass into artificing after Petals to the Metal. I don’t think I’ve made any other posts going in depth talking about it, so some new stuff!!

(I almost wrote down everything I have planned so far that is definitely going to end up in the text, and I can’t give all my secrets away, plus I realized that wasn’t the prompt lol :3 )

I’m not sure of what things are and are not going to end up being in the text, but some details that I do want to point out is that whenever Magnus used to talk about his past or tries to think about it, he would get this far away look in his eyes and just stay silent for a while before someone brought him back to the present, and that happened less and less the more time he spends on Faerun, but since meeting Merle and Taako again and then getting on with the rest of the adventure, Julia notices he starts getting that far away look more often again, and that it happens to Merle, Taako, and Davenport too.

Also, Julia had two childhood best friends whom, during the Relic Wars, Kalen had sent out with a couple of other people to find the Oculus, and she never heard from them again. I had names for them, but I guess I didn’t save them, so now I have to pick new names lol But one of them is a tiefling girl and the other one is a dwarven boy. I don’t have an idea of how exactly they died, but I do know that they did die, and Julia’s never going to know what happened to them. I do know they never actually got a hold of the Oculus though.

Julia’s mother died when she was a kid, and Steven never really dated anyone else, but they were really close to the other people in the Craftsmen Corridor, so while it was just the two of them, Julia grew up with a lot of people which is going to make turning down the Chalice’s offer to stop Kalen and save her dad and her town a lot harder. I’m also going to keep the characters I made up that are residents in Ravens Roost that I either referenced or wrote about in other fics the same.

I still don’t know what the Chalice is going to offer Magnus. It might also be saving Ravens Roost because he did grow close to the people living there and that’s the last place he felt like he was home, plus it would mean a lot to Julia, but I don’t know if I necessarily want to give them the same offer. I don’t know what else I’d offer Magnus though, so we’ll see.

Maurcretia is canon, and the reason Lucretia and Maureen stopped talking is because they had an argument about the ethics of erasing someone’s entire life from their friends and family the first time someone in the Bureau dies, and people started asking questions and Lucretia decided that erasing them had to become a thing. This is definitely probably not going to show up in the story except Maureen does ask Julia to tell Lucretia that she’s sorry and she loves her before she leaves with Kravitz.

Magnus, Merle, and Taako all speak a version of Common that only exists in their plane, and Julia only knew that Magnus spoke it which he remembers he knows it from where he grew up, but not much past that. Tres horny bois found out they all speak it at some point when Julia’s not there, so when they’re fighting Trent the treant in Petals to the Metal, and Merle tells Magnus to chop Trent, he says it in their version of Common, which is how Julia finds out that they speak it too. Everyone says they know it from their home town. No one has the capability of making the connection that they are all from the same place.

I can’t think of any other details right now that aren’t exclusively going to end up happening in the text, but I know that a lot of my ideas that I have now and in the future are going to end up getting written because this fic is basically my play box that I’m eventually going to let people watch me play in lmao I know I need to get the campaign part of the fic written first, but I’m debating whether or not I want to continue it after Story and Song and whether it’s going to be in the same fic or if I’m just going to make it a series on AO3 lol

Edit: I forgot, Lucretia tells them that there’s only 6 relics instead of 7 because that way when they collect the animus bell, they think that’s the last one and that Taako’s argument for going through with breaking into Lucretia’s vault about how they were out of a job actually makes sense. While I was listening the through the podcast the first time around, I was mentally screaming at them that just because Griffin said it was the last arc didn’t mean that there wasn’t still a seventh object and that while I agreed that they needed to figure out what was in the vault, saying they were out of a job wasn’t a valid argument alsdkhgdlhg

It still really bothers me, so I fixed it lmao

So a while back I came across this movie clip that I think really articulates well the idea of how the Great Beings made the Matoran Universe, the manual labor and construction, filling the oceans, laying literal foundations atop massive rafters, and it got me thinking...

For YaBr, what if... The Matoran Universe’s manmade, mechanical nature wasn’t some big secret? At least not entirely...

These people were made and programmed without any preconception of what a natural world should actually look like. And they’re told ahead of time that Mata Nui and the Great Beings made this world, and there is some understanding by the Makuta, even before Tren Krom revealed the entire truth to Mutran, that the health of the Great Spirit is linked to the work of the matoran.

Some might say the best way to hide a secret is to tell as much of it as possible, so it really does feel like there’s nothing else to hide... So maybe that’s the case for the Matoran Universe. Maybe the people of the world DO know that their machines help run their universe, in the sense that they power and drive natural functions such as weather, the flow of the tides, etc.

It could be framed like this- The Matoran Universe was once a series of desolate caverns, cold and incapable of hosting life. Barren, pretty much no air to breathe, completely dark. But then the Great Beings and Mata Nui came along, and they blessed these empty caverns...

They carved them into smooth domes, connected them to one another and filled each with air and oceans. They installed divine machinations that act as life-support systems for this world, while keeping it running- Stuff like giant underwater vents and turbines that channel the ocean’s water, pumping it to create currents.

There are enormous fans and propellers in the ceilings of the domes that generate colossal tornadoes and cyclones, which in turn contribute to the winds all across the universe... Giant generators create heat, cooling fans keep the ice caps frozen, etc. The super-sized lightstones create Day for the Matoran Universe, before dimming to create Night as smaller lightstones activate to function as the stars. Flora was grown directly from the earth by the elemental power of the Great Spirit...

(Oh yeah and the Makuta made the Rahi that compose the self-regulating ecosystems of the Matoran Universe, which the lack of a need for direct maintenance is in some ways amazing compared to Mata Nui’s machinations. But nobody acknowledges this of course, nor how these ecosystems contribute to their own cycle of life and materials that is also valuable, just as the water cycle for example is facilitated by Mata Nui’s designs.)

Everyone is under the impression that this world IS made already, so this knowledge is treated as common and regular. Matoran also help drive and power machines that in turn perform functions that help them- But deep underground, these machinations travel even further to contribute to additional functions that nobody knows about. Powering a machine built into the island’s foundations helps to create heat, but it also channels energy throughout Mata Nui as well.

Study of these divine machinations, attempts to examine and dissect their workings, is forbidden- It is established as blasphemy, like taking apart a church to study it. These are the sacred designs of the Great Spirit, and trying to modify them or suggest alterations is heresy. Similarly, the Order of Mata Nui works in secret to target anyone who would try to explore the inner workings of the universe...

People know that deep beneath the crust of the domes, you can find giant rafters and maintenance tunnels- They think these are extensions of the machines that power and make their world livable, and they’re kinda right. Mata Nui does his part to power the life support systems of the Matoran Universe, and his people do the rest in places he can’t.

People have found giant mechanisms within the islands, and they believe this a part of Mata Nui’s structures that he literally built when making this world- They don’t mess with them or question it. People believe Mata Nui made these machines to help them survive, as divine gifts, and these automatons are seen as extensions of his power... Huge metal beams within and around the universe are said to hold up and support the domes, so they don’t collapse in on themselves and crush everything to death- And some artificial gravity might be applied to hold the weight, which means further maintenance to run those systems.

People HAVE come across the Maze of Shadows, which I like what @rebuiltbionicle did by interpreting them as the maintenance shafts of the Great Spirit Robot. They know that there are passageways just outside the domes, extending beyond them... Above and beneath the blessed territory of the Great Spirit. Some have tried to explore them, but with little luck, often disappearing- So superstition and legend teaches everyone not to mess around, but of course there is theorizing.

What lays beyond the Matoran Universe, if not just more layers of crust and desolate rock, and the Maze of Shadows really IS just maintenance tunnels that could potentially create a new means of travel to the domes, not that anyone has achieved this? So when the Toa Metru emerge to the surface and find Mata Nui, they’re of course amazed to see a world that can naturally run itself without needing giant life-support systems to maintain it...

I’ll probably go more into the thought process and discoveries when I cover the Metru Nui arc. But for now, I think this is a good place to end... And, I recognize that some people might think this spoils the twist a bit, having everyone already know about the giant machines that keep their world alive, that they have to repair. But in a worldbuilding sense, I just think that it’s impossible to hide such things for so long...

And obviously the Order of Mata Nui exists, but. I was thinking that it could be framed not as ‘We are inside a giant machine’ and more ‘We live in caverns that are mechanized to support life and nature, and it is our duty to keep these machinations and thus the world running.’ This of course makes the Great Cataclysm even more terrifying, and its devastation felt even worse- The earthquakes damage many of these life support systems and machinations.

In many parts of the world, the currents have stopped and the ocean has gone still. There is no wind, the temperature is dropping without the heat of generators, while some frozen tundras are melting without cooling fans, which in turn creates flooding. Air has gone thin forcing some places to be abandoned, as people scramble to repair these machinations to the best of their ability.

This is where Artakha comes in, when he eventually uses his Mask of Creation to repair as much of the Matoran Universe as possible, mending lightstones that have left domes in perpetual darkness, getting the currents and winds running again. I hope that by emphasizing the mechanical, artificial nature of the world, it sells just how alien the Matoran Universe is... How it really can be on the brink of collapse and was salvaged by the Great Spirit.

For all we know, people were even told stories of the surface, if they have a concept of a larger surface existing and don’t believe the world is just endless rock and earth with empty pockets carved in by the Great Beings. They were told of how the surface was destroyed, but the Great Beings created these underground worlds and replicated the surface’s natural functions... So finding the island of Mata Nui really DOES feel like something out of myth, legend, and paradise for the Toa Metru.

And ultimately, I hope this change of worldbuilding helps to feasibly foreshadow and make the Great Spirit Robot twist more natural... As a kid, I didn’t get a great sense of how the Matoran Universe was underground and its relative placement, probably for a reason, so it was a bit weird hearing that Metru Nui was actually underground when the films depicted open skies. The weird sense of space didn’t make me appreciate the reveal and connect things naturally, with a lot having to be explained and learned directly online.

But, yeah! I’d like to hear anyone’s thoughts on this, if they care to read and discuss. I think I’m gonna go through with my ‘Pangaea’ layout for the Matoran Universe, made possible through intradimensional portals disguised as regular gateways... And to fully explore the idea of machines that run and power an artificial world that is normally barren, I’ll probably create new islands and machinations that represent certain organs, to go with the biomechanical nature more;

So giant turbines acting as the primary lungs of Mata Nui, a giant cluster of channels acting as the heart that pumps liquid though his veins, etc. Any metal foundations or pillars found from digging too deep are the ‘bones’ of the universe that hold these caverns together and keep them from collapsing, which is another reason why people don’t dare to mess with or explore them.

One of the challenges when learning a language independently as a hobby is that you don't get to do regular tests or exams, or your skills are not evaluated by anyone but yourself so it can be tricky to determine what level you are at.

I took this one CEFR level test I found and according to it, I'm currently at B2 level in Hindi. However, this quick online multiple-choice test is very limited in that it can only assess your reading comprehension and grammar to a certain degree, and ignores listening and speaking skills altogether. So I needed a second opinion (my own, obviously).

I took a moment and went through the CEFR self-assessment grid and it revealed that my level is currently closer to A2-B1. I read through each box and shaded it only if I felt confident and comfortable in doing so. I haven't done this before and I was actually surprised to reach B1 in all other skills but spoken production. I know it to be my weakness due to a lack of opportunities to speak in Hindi regularly in my daily life.

I shaded B2 (and B1 for speak production) boxes with a lighter colour because they felt realistic and possible to reach in a near-ish future (in a year?) compared to C1 and C2 which at the moment seem distant if not unreachable and impossible levels of fluency.

Finally, some notes about this specific online CEFR test it took:

First of all, since the start of my Hindi journey, I have focused on learning Devanagiri and I noticed that I really struggled in reading full sentences in this IAST style Hindi and I believe some of my mistakes might be because of it.

Question 13: Agar maĩ usse ____, to maĩ usko batāũgā

My answer: milegā Correct answer: miltā hũ

I have no idea why habitual tense is used in an अग�� - तो sentence. So far I have learned to use only future / subjective tenses with this structure. Having said that my answer is obviously wrong because first-person masculine future would be मिलूँगा.

Question 24: Maĩ cahtā hu ki tum yahã ___

My answer: na jaĕ Correct answer: reho

Here the only explanation for my mistake is that I was completely thrown off by the "IAST". I knew I should choose an answer with the subjunctive, but I wasn't absolutely sure if "reho" was meant to represent रहो or not so I went with a negative subjunctive I knew didn't make complete sense either. But even if it was a negative it should be जाओ.

Question 25: Maĩ film nahĩ ___

My answer: dekh saktĩ Correct answer: dekh sakā

Again, I blame this IAST style since I failed to notice the nasalisation at the end of saktĩ, which I would have immediately noticed in Devanagari.

Question 36: Merī bahin āspitāl mĕ hai. Maĩ ___ bahut cintā kar rahā hũ

My answer: uskī Correct answer: us ke bāre mĕ

I respectfully disagree with this answer. I have learned to pair चिंता करना specifically with the की post position (similar to की मदद करना) and Google search gives +3000 results for "उसकी चिंता कर रहा" and zero (0) results for "उस के बारे में चिंता कर रहा" (with quotation marks). I'm not saying the test is wrong but my answer wasn't wrong either.

Question 37: Us ādmī ne kahā ki use bas yā tren se jānā ___

My answer: lāparvāhī hai Correct answer: lāparvāh hai

Both words were new to me, and although I knew the meaning of both the prefix ला- (non, without) and परवाह (concern), on the spot I couldn't deduct that together they form the adjective indifferent, uncaring and by adding the suffix -ई it becomes a feminine noun indifference, negligence.

Question 40: Vidyārthī savāl ka javāb nahĩ ___

My answer: dī Correct answer: de pāyā

I am only vaguely aware of the compound verb structure using पाना which means to manage, to be able, but I haven't managed or been able (haha) to practice it yet, so I missed this one. I could have guessed the right answer if I had noticed the lack of ने after the subject; the sentence simply cannot use a simple past without it. If it had, it would have been दिया anyway.

Although the weather wasn’t that bad you didn’t feel like this train robbery was a good idea. The sun was high in the sky and no snowstorm was coming any time soon, but despite that fact, it was hard to get warm. Your horse was tired and it kept snorting angrily and flicking its tale, distracting you from observing the landscape, as it was getting darker.

It was hard not to feel Javier tensely looking at you. He was riding Boaz somewhere behind, still being not sure if it’d be a good idea to take you for the robbery with other men. They kept discussing the plan, from time to time arguing and cursing, but Dutch wasn’t in the mood for listening to someone’s dispute and he would stop any of them immediately.

Sometimes the path was narrow and steep, snowdrifts making it hard for horses to keep going, strong cold wind was making the situation even worse.

When everybody stopped, you released the reins and rubbed your hands, trying to warm them just a little.

"Cover your faces," everyone followed Dutch’s command.

When the railways stayed unharmed, you understood that this definitely wouldn’t end well.

I read new manga chapters as they get translated so feel free to incorporate anything from the manga that’s available in english. I’m not spoiled for anything beyond that, so please no spoilers for future developments.

Kiriwo Amy/Suzuki Iruma

There are many good ships with Iruma, but this one just has a lot things I like. I love enemy ships with both sides being way too emotionally invested into each other so this was inevitable. I love how this relationship starts as this really wholesome friendship and school festival preparation, except Kiriwo turns out to be a bit messed up and wants to blow up everyone. But then they both accept the outcome and go on with their lives still thinking about each other. Iruma goes through a lot of trouble to keep the club operating even though Kiriwo has been pretty much expelled. And then Kiriwo is now obsessed with Iruma as his anthitesis and perfect enemy.

I’m okay with the potential story happening at any point in the canon. I would love both a story set before the festival while Kiriwo is still hiding his true colors or a story set after festival. Maybe Iruma runs into Kiriwo somewhere after he escapes prison and instead of calling an adult, he tries to stop Kiriwo from causing trouble on his own. As for pre-festival story. Maybe some upperclassmen steal important parts from the club and Iruma and Kiriwo set out to get them back.

Naberius Kalego & Suzuki Iruma

I love Kalego for being a much better take on Snape than original Snape ever was. The second the series made Kalego Iruma’s familiar I knew this was about to get good. And it was. I love how Kalego slowly warms up to Iruma, even if he is still allergic to his and Sullivan’s antics. I love that Kalego is actually a competent teacher who cares about his students, even if he would rather eat a whole lemon than admit it out loud.

For prompts, maybe Sullivan ends up having an important business and Opera isn’t available so he dumps looking after Iruma on Kalego for a few days. Or Iruma is struggling with studying since so much is new for him so Kalego ends up forced to help him catch up with the material (if you are following manga inclusion of Balam is always welcome). Or maybe Iruma gets into usual trouble ends up stranded somewhere and the only one he can call for help is his familiar.

AUs and ships

I love the worldbuilding around the demon world, so I would ask that if you decided to write an AU that it still incorporates demons. I would definitely love an AU where rather than getting summoned to demon world, Iruma accidentally summons either Kiriwo or Kalego into the human world. Maybe Iruma’s parents try to use him as an offering, but instead he ends up bound to a demon. I would love to see Kiriwo excited to unleash suffering (even if his weak powers severely limit him in that regard) onto human world just to discover that he made contract with the biggest pacifist possible. Or Kalego being torn between wanting to return home as soon as possible (he has classes to teach!) and wanting to somehow help the weird human child that just keeps getting into trouble. Any other demon-focused AU is also welcome. I’m also fine with any sort of AU divergences scenario. Maybe Iruma keeps accidentally sabbotaging Kiriwo’s terrorist plans without realizing it. Or Iruma ends up summoning Kalego more often as his familiar when he gets into trouble.

As for ships, I’d rather avoid any love triangle scenarios for this canon, so please focus on just one pairing per character (competing for Iruma’s attention is normal for this canon, I’d just rather not see outright romantic competition). It’s self-explainatory for Kiriwo request, but if you want to include some shipping elements into the Kalego request I also ship Iruma/Ameri, Iruma/Alice and Kalego/Balam.

Bakugou Katsuki & Uraraka Ochako

I love how different the two of them, but at the same time how well they see through each other. I would love to have them work together while showing both great teamwork, but at the same time butting heads over their differences in worldview. I also love how they both acknowledge each other’s strength.

If you plan to write the ship version of this prompt: they are both very focused on becoming heroes, so I would prefer that they don’t just get together easily. I believe they would be both be extremely reluctant to do so, because of their line of work and media attention that heroes get. Still, I would love to see the tension between them where their professionalism fights against their feelings.

For prompts I would love having them complete some sort of exercise or exam together. I would love to see them pretend to be villains for the sake of exercise and Ochako surprisingly getting into the role, with occassional moments of her breaking out of it, which give everyone a whiplash. I feel like Bakugo would have amusing reactions to seeing her act so out of character. Or the work together on something for school festival. Like making a perferomance togater. Alternatively you can go for future fic where the two of them take part in an action to stop villains. Maybe one of them gets hurt which prompts the other to get very protective (and more honest about their romantic feelings if that’s what you are going for).

AUs and ships

I would very much encourage any future fics. I love seeing characters as fully-fledged heroes. I’m okay with other setting changes, though I would prefer for the competence aspect to still come in play somehow in them (with Bakugo being stupidly talented and hard working, while acknowledging Ochako’s potential). I’m also okay with canon divergences.

I don’t mind past Midoriya/Ochako if you want to incorporate it into the story, but I’d rather not get any love triangles for this pairing. Either have Ochako’s feelings sizzle out or have them date and break up at some point in the past. If you are writing gen version I’d rather neither Bakugou nor Ochako were being mentioned currently having feelings for anyone. When it comes to other pairings I like Midoriya/Todoroki, Mirio/Tamaki and Eraserhead/Mic.

MY NEXT LIFE AS A VILLAINESS (MANGA)

I only read manga for this story, so please don’t spoil me for the parts not yet adapted from Light Novel.

Group: Katarina Claes/Gerald Stuart (My Next Life as a Villainess)

I ran into this manga on accident, but I definitely don’t regret it. I love how Katarina ends up solving all the problems in this series either through her efforts or by sheer accident and how she ends up becoming the actual protagonist. This charmingly comedic story has a lot of heart and I crave more.

I think I like Gerard the most out of all potential suitors for Katarina’s heart and would love to see more of his crush on Katarina and unsuccessful attempts at actually wooing her. We only see him through Katarina’s perspective, who can’t separate him from the Gerard she knows from the game, even though he changed under her influence. I would definitely be up for a story where Katarina starts to notice that maybe her idea of Gerard doesn’t exactly line up with the reality. Or maybe she remains blessfully ignorant and decides to go in-depth investigation into finding more of Gerard’s weaknesses, because she saw him do something nice for Maria and now she is sure the end is near for her and she wants to be extra prepared. Or maybe he takes her on a vacation trip to escape from her other suitors, but everything goes terribly wrong (maybe their carriage crashes forcing them to spend the night in the woods), and yet both of them end up having a lot of fun.

I don’t mind including any other characters, since they are a colorful bunch. I read this manga for harem shenanigans, and you are free to include as much of it as you want.

AUs and ships

I’m okay with AUs and canon divergences. The story is already a huge canon divergence after all, so if you want to twist it even more, that’s fine by me. If you want to play around with characters accidentally getting transported to the alternate world where Katarina is the original Katarina or getting a glimps of it, I would be very much for it.

I’m okay with all canonical crushes being acknowledged, however due the nature of my request I want the endgame ship to be Katarina/Gerard. I don’t mind other characters being shipped with each other.

SWORD ART ONLINE

I haven’t read Alicization novels, just watched anime. I know anime skipped some content and if you want to use it in the story I’m fine with it, just make sure to establish the situation so I know what’s going on. However, I would be grateful for not spoiling the story from the novels that have yet to be adapted (you are free to use general worldbuilding from it, just don’t spoil major plot elements).

Eugeo/Kirito

I was perfectly fine with Asuna/Kirito becoming canon and then Eugeo came and made everything gay. Honestly, though, I love the interactions Eugeo and Kirito had and I would love to see more. Especially from their sword academy days where they had some peaceful time before they were brought to the tower. I want to know all the weird shenanigans they got into during that time, given how much like they acted like an old married couple. Or if you want something else then maybe some exploration of their struggles as they climb the tower. For example, a time loop taking place during their tower climb, with the system returning to the last save state each time Kirito dies to keep him alive.

AUs and ships

I don’t have any suggestions, but I don’t mind setting changes if that’s where you want to go. I’m also okay with Canon Divergence AUs of any kind. Especially, for ones changing the ending of first season. Like, I’m okay with sad gay we got, but there are so many possibilites to explore here other than what canon gave us. Maybe have Eugeo permanently fuse with his blade so Kirito ends up having a sentient sword boyfriend. Or he asks Cardinal to transfer her authority to him and have him oppose Administator as the new Cardinal. There’s just so many interesting ways this could have gone. I’m not big on the War of the Underworld plotline so you are free to handwave how the changes impacted it or modify that part of the story completely.

As I mentioned I’m okay with Asuna/Kirito ship, so if you want you can incorporate it in the story. Just make sure the focus stays on Eugeo/Kirito. I must also admit that I really can’t see Eugeo’s feelings for Alice as romantic, so I would prefer them to not be portrayed as such.

So Tigryph and I have been madly plotting about future RP events, and it looks like Trent is going to step in as Pseudo Dad for Dario after Dario’s dad gets killed. Trent keeps tabs on Dario after meeting him and shows up at the funeral to see how the kid is/if there’s anything he can do. We’ve been thinking Dar tells Tren that he suspects Crazy Sis was involved later on when he gets some evidence...
