World Air Quality Report
About the Report:
The Swiss organization IQAir is in charge of producing the World Air Quality Report.
PM2.5 air quality data from 6,475 cities in 117 countries, regions, and territories serve as the basis for the report.
In order to improve air quality and create healthier communities and cities, IQAir aims to engage, educate, and inspire citizens, researchers, businesses, NGOs, and governments.
In 2021, no nation met the most recent WHO air quality standard for PM2.5.
After changing its guidelines last year, the World Health Organization (WHO) now recommends that annual average readings of PM2.5, which are dangerous airborne particles, should not exceed 5 micrograms per cubic meter because even low concentrations pose significant health risks.
The most recent WHO PM2.5 air quality guidelines were only met by Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the territories of New Caledonia.
Out of 6,475 global cities that were included in the report, only 222 met the most recent WHO PM2.5 guideline.
Annual PM2.5 concentrations exceeding 10 times the WHO PM2.5 guideline were found in 93 cities in the report.
China, which has been fighting pollution since 2014, dropped from 14th place in the rankings for PM2.5 in 2021 to 22nd, with average readings improving slightly to 32.6 micrograms.
With average PM2.5 readings of more than 100 micrograms, Hotan, in the northwestern part of Xinjiang, was China's worst-performing city, largely due to sandstorms.
In 2021, Central and South Asia had some of the worst air quality in the world and was home to 46 of the 50 cities that were the most polluted in the world.
In 2021, the following five nations ranked as the most polluted:
India Indian Scenario New Delhi (India) is the world's most polluted capital city for the fourth year in a row, followed by Dhaka (Bangladesh), N'Djamena (Chad), Dushanbe (Tajikistan), and Muscat (Oman). Bangladesh Chad Pakistan Tajikistan India Indian Scenario
According to the report, 35 of the 50 cities with the worst air quality were located in India. Bhiwadi, in Rajasthan, topped the list, followed by Ghaziabad, in Uttar Pradesh.
The recommended air quality standards of 5 micrograms per cubic meter set by the World Health Organization (WHO) were not met in any of the Indian cities.
The report also revealed that 48% of Indian cities exceeded the 50 g/m3 air quality level, which is well over ten times the WHO guidelines. This marked the end of a three-year improvement in air quality in India.
Why is there concern about air pollution?
The executive summary of the report states that air pollution is now regarded as the greatest threat to global environmental health, causing seven million deaths annually.
Numerous illnesses, including asthma, cancer, lung diseases, and heart disease, are brought on or made worse by air pollution.
The daily economic cost of air pollution has been calculated to be $8 billion (USD), or 3% to 4% of global GDP.
According to the report, vehicular emissions, power generation, industrial waste, biomass combustion for cooking, the construction industry, and sporadic events like crop burning are India's primary sources of air pollution.
