De Algemene Verwarring #104 - 8 January 2024
Episode one hundred and four of De Algemene Verwarring was broadcast on Monday, January 8, 2024, and you can listen to it by clicking on the link below that will take you directly to the Mixcloud page:
Pictured below is the Swiss all girl punk-pop band Chin-Chin, I just recently got to know them and I think I heard them first in one of Erika Elizabeth's curated Maximum Rock'n Roll radio shows (who arz, by the way, highly recommended if you're into that kind of edgy post-punk and girly pop and all). Erika used to host the Futures And Pasts podcast, and is also a member of the band Collate. Chin-Chin was formed in 1982 in Biel, Switzerland and released two singles and a full length (reissued by Slumberland Records and Mississippi Records), and now there's also a compilation released by Sealed Records, which includes the unreleased four track Janice Long Session recorded for the BBC from 1988, never released before. I'm playing the song Cheat Boy Cheat in this episode (it has a Ramones bass riff yes!). Other tracks in this episode come from a few of the records that I listed in my best of 2023 posts last week (Sheaves, Famous Mammals, Blod, Drifting, and the anarcho punk compilation on Optimo Music) and older and newer tracks from DAF, Suburban Lawns, Violent Change, Maan, Current Affairs, The Shapiros, and a brand new single from Swedish legends Brainbombs! And beneath the photo you can find the playlist for the show. Enjoy!

Third Volume of 'Young Don't Play Fighting Games' Released in English
The third volume of Eri Ejima's comedy Yuri series Young Ladies Don't Play Fighting Games (Tai Ari Deshita. ~Ojо̄-sama wa Kakutо̄ Gēmu Nante Shinai~) is now available in English. Seven Seas Entertainment released this manga digitally on September 27 and in paperback on October 4.
The series follows Aya, a transfer student to an elite private school for prim and proper young ladies. She is determined to fit in and hide her plebian passed as a fight game enthusiast from her prestigious new classmates. However, one night she discovers that the school's star student, "Shirayuri-sama," harbors a similar secret obsession with fight games. Quickly becoming rivals, the girls spend their days acting like the perfect students while sneaking around at night to play forbidden games and evade discovery by the Dormitory Affairs Committee.
The publisher describes the newest volume:
Aya, Mio, and their new friends Yuu and Tamaki are prim-and-proper young ladies by day, but when night falls, they turn to bloodthirsty hardcore gaming! They’ve set their sights on a huge fighting game tournament called EX Japan, where pros and amateurs alike gather for the ultimate test of skill. With so many experienced fighters out for blood, can the girls hope to get the results they want? From qualifying pools to grand finals, it’s bound to be a wild ride!
Young Ladies Don't Play Fighting Games parodies elements from classic school Yuri works, such as the setting of an elite all-girls school and Mio's role as star student. It received a mostly positive reception for its incorporation of horror and action imagery and strong premise. YuriMother gave the first volume a score of 8/10.
The fourth volume of Young Ladies Don't Play Fighting Games will be released in English in November. Media Factor will publish the fifth bound volume in Japanese on October 21. The series is currently serialized in Monthly Comic Flapper. An anime based on the series was announced in January 2021, but since then, no additional information about the adaptation has been released.
The series is translated by Nicole Frasik with lettering by Vanessa Satone, proofreading by Kurestin Armada, and editing by J.P. Sulivan.

—— loneliness was a prevalent theme in his childhood , an inevitable pitfall of having to pick up his life and begin anew every year or so . dante was always great at making friends but it was an exhausting pursuit to get to know someone , only just to say goodbye to them and inescapably lose contact as they all went on with the motions of their lives . however , when he is able to make friends , dante is someone who is fiercely loyal and will do anything for them no matter the cost .
—— but despite it all , he was taught to always be charming and sociable , appearing as the perfect golden child . everyone saw him as this equally optimistic and charismatic boy who never entered a room where he didn’t belong . but inside , dante had always been a mess of anxieties , loneliness and resentment , desperately wanting to belong somewhere . he had always wanted to make his life meaningful but he always found it difficult to find the meaning in something that felt like so out of his control growing up . he wants so much out of life and he really is still figuring out how to get that .
—— still , dante does enjoy seeing the world , exploring all the places and learning all the stories and history attached to them . he has leather - bound journals with records of all his travels and adventures , looking back at them to remind himself that it wasn’t really all that bad when his depression and anxieties would get overwhelming .
—— it felt like the natural progression of things to follow his mother’s footsteps into becoming a foreign service worker , already having the experience of being all around the world . and truthfully , it was really hard for him to choose one specific passion , always a mess of unfinished projects and ever - changing interests . becoming like his mother was just most convenient thing in the world . he spent six years of his life in university and while he wasn’t the most passionate about it , it gave his life some structure and that was enough . he always loved learning and stimulating his mind , so he never really got bored of writing hundreds of papers and researching foreign policies all night .
—— he was hired at singapore’s us embassy after he got his master’s degree , but he immediately grew tired of a desk job , how tedious it was to do the same thing every day without learning anything new or doing something more fulfilling . so , he quit his job and applied at the interchange , allowing him to travel the world again this time with a group of other people and learning once again .

The aquarium dolphin riding experience disappears
Oh Ye-jin - January 21, 2021
Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries prepares a comprehensive aquarium management plan...Total ban on cetacean breeding.
From now on, the 'experience program' of riding dolphins or beluga in the aquarium is expected to disappear, and the act of bringing in new cetaceans from the aquarium to breeding or exhibiting is expected to be completely banned. On the 21st, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries unveiled the 'First Comprehensive Aquarium Management Plan' (2021-2025), which aims to prevent abuse of marine animals and create a safe aquarium environment.
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries decided to amend the Zoo and Aquarium Act (Act on Management of Zoos and Aquariums) to change the existing aquarium registration system to a permit system. Currently, if you apply for registration with a tank capacity of 300㎥ or a floor area of 200㎡ or more, you can open an aquarium, but in the future, the aquarium is divided into large, small and medium-sized, and other large aquariums with a size of 10,000㎡ or more. It is planned to be able to rear 10,000 individuals. Small and medium-sized aquariums less than 10,000 square meters will be allowed to rear 200 species of marine organisms with fewer than 10,000.
New permit standards reflecting the suitable habitat environment for each species of marine animals are also created. For marine animal experience events run by some aquariums, such as Geoje Sea World, which caused the 'animal cruelty controversy' with the Beluga riding program last year, it has decided to prepare guidelines that stipulate possible and prohibited activities by the end of this year. Subsequently, the law will be amended to specifically list prohibited acts and also specify penalties for violating them.
Currently, only acts such as damaging or starving animals are defined and punished as 'abuse', but the government is considering a direction in which feeding, touching, and riding of visitors are also prohibited in the animal welfare level. The aquarium is not allowed to bring in new whales other than the existing ones, and it plans to completely ban the breeding and display of cetaceans in newly opened aquariums.
For dead cetaceans, we will also consider ways to make them available for educational and research purposes through taxidermy. In addition, when the government permits or inspects the aquarium business, an expert who can evaluate the appropriateness of the habitat environment will be designated as an inspector to receive advice.
In terms of biodiversity conservation, it was decided to establish a database (DB) by conducting an actual condition survey on the current status of species in domestic aquariums. In particular, for marine protected organisms in which individual management is urgent, a 'blood registration register' containing the pedigree and individual government is used for propagation or restoration projects.
The number of specialized institutions for the rescue and treatment of marine animals such as whales and sea turtles is planned to increase from 8 in 2018 to 15 in 2023 and 20 in 2028. In addition, it was decided to establish guidelines for preventing infectious diseases and to establish a response system for disasters and accidents for hygiene management and safety accident prevention for aquarium visitors and workers.
Prior to the establishment of this comprehensive plan, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries has formed the 'Aquarium Dolphin Welfare Improvement Council' in August last year with private aquarium companies and civic groups, and announced that it will continue discussions through the consultative body for the revision of the law.

Cover Story: Hollywood’s Best and Worst Bosses
Page 1: Shia LaBeouf currently accused of relentless abuse and sexual battery by his ex FKA Twigs was snapped making out with Margaret Qualley after she arrived at LAX for a solid 10 minutes and holding up traffic -- the PDA session was the first time Shia and Margaret who is the daughter of Andie MacDowell were spotted out in public together but the two got well-acquainted a few months ago rolling around naked for a NSFW music video for a song by the actress’ sister Rainey Qualley a.k.a. Rainsford -- Shia went out of his way to charm Margaret as soon as they met and he wooed her with compliments and gifts and flowers and texts and spur-of-the-moment dates where he’d just show up at her house but her friends are concerned because Twigs’ lawsuit against Shia alleges multiple incidents of abuse including choking her in her sleep and knowingly giving her a sexually transmitted disease -- Shia said many of those allegations are not true and he is in a 12-step program and therapy for PTSD and alcoholism
Page 2: Contents, Prince William and Duchess Kate with kids Prince George and Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis for a Christmas card
Page 3: Candice Swanepoel in a bathing suit in Miami, Jennifer Garner stepped out to run errands in a mask and an expressive sweater in L.A., Ryan Reynolds cuddled up with a puppy to encourage his Instagram followers to donate to the SickKids Foundation
Page 4: Friends of Johnny Depp are keeping their distance as he gears up for another ugly defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard -- after losing the case against a U.K. newspaper that called him a wife beater and a scathing feature in The Hollywood Reporter that dubbed the star radioactive and his career all but dead, former pals want nothing to do with him -- the likes of Jude Law, Leonardo DiCaprio and Channing Tatum have been backpeddling on Johnny and it’s making him furious but to be fair Johnny had already alienated Leo and Channing by calling them Pumpkin Head and Potato Head and accusing them of having affairs with Amber -- Jude’s indifference cuts the deepest because for a time he and Johnny were brothers-in-arms as they filmed the second Fantastic Beasts movie and from Johnny’s perspective Jude hasn’t lifted a finger to defend him

January 8, 2021: The English Patient (1996) (Part 1)
Y’know, it’s weird. I distinctly remember the existence of this film as a kid, because of references made to it in pop culture...but I remember neither the film itself, nor the actual references. The film I’ve never seen, and the references are probably lost to time. This month has been a test of my memory, I guess.
However, the reason for this film’s notoriety in the ‘90s isn’t exactly a mystery, as it won 9 Academy Awards. Yeah. NINE, out of TWELVE NOMINATIONS. And this would FINALLY be a good time to mention something; something I should’ve said a LONG time ago. The Oscars...kinda suck. Yeah, they aren’t to be used as a bastion of quality when it comes to film.
And yet, to win as many awards as this film did...there’s gotta be something there, right? Well, let’s find out, shall we? Let’s jump in to the desert and World War II! SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
Recap
The starting days of World War II. A prop plane flies over the Sahara, and a group of German soldiers shoot it down setting the pilot ablaze, and almost certainly killing his passenger in the process. The pilot survives, horrifically burned, and he’s found and cared for by a group of Bedouin nomads
Meanwhile, Hana (Juliet Binche), a Canadian nurse, cares for patients, and finds out that her love has died in battle. Amongst all this, we flash forward to the beaches of Italy in 1943, where Hana is now caring for the amnesiac pilot, the Hungarian Count Almásy (Ralph Fiennes). As they move camp alongside the rest of the camp, Hana’s friends inexplicably die when their vehicle hits a landmine in the road. Damn, this is an unlucky lady.
She seems to echo these sentiments, declaring herself cursed. She spots an empty monastery, probably bombed at some point, and asks for permission to stay behind and care for Almásy there. She’s given it, to the reluctance of her commanders, and two two move in for the long haul.
Hana scours the monastery, and finds a library stacked with books, as well as a plum orchard. As she speaks with Almásy, we discover he’s a well-read man, with his only possession being a copy of Herodotus’ Histories, a classic Greek text from which we get many stories, real and fictional. But in the book...are memories...
Flashback! The Bedouin from earlier is speaking with Almásy in the desert, and he gets information of a landmark far away. An cartographer and archaeologist, he is in Egypt as a part of a pre-war expedition with the Royal Geographic Society. Their task is to map the Sahara, using a prop plane to do so from the air. He’s joined by Geoffrey Clifton (Colin Firth), his wife Katherine (Kristin Scott Thomas), and his friend Madox (Julian Wadham).
That night, in the present and the past, Hana and Katherine both recall a story of Herodotus, one of the ancient king Candaules, his queen Nyssia, and his assassin Gyges. The next day, in the present, Hana meets a neighbor back in Canada (where she lives normally), David Caravaggio (Willem Dafoe). The thumbless Intelligence Agent asks to be allowed to stay, which Hana allows.
However, it would appear that Caravaggio is there for another reason, and he begins to interrogate Almásy, also revealing his name. This leads, of course, to a flashback, during which the Count clashes with Katherine a bit in a marketplace. However, that night, the two dance at a party, and it’s revealed that he may care for her more than expected. And who knows; that might be reciprocated.
In the present, Hana breaks down in sorrow, having lost a bunch of people. Caravaggio tries to comfort her, and it’s revealed that Almásy might actually be the person who removed Caravaggio’s thumbs, and that Caravaggio believes that Almásy actually remembers everything.
The next morning, in flashback, Geoffrey Clifton leaves the desert, as well as Katherine. While the Count shows some concern, Geoffrey brushes it off, saying that she loves the desert. In the present, the monastery group is now joined by another member, Kip (Naveen Andrews), a Sikh mine-sweeper, who asks them to leave the monastery. Still, he and his sargeant, Hardy (Kevin Whately) stay there as well, as Germans have been spotted in the area.
Flashback once again, and Katherine and the Count become a bit closer as they continue to survey the desert. While stopped, Almásy discovers a cave covered in hieroglyphics, one of which we actually saw painted during the opening credits of the film. This is a real archeological site, called the Cave of Swimmers! Also means that the group is currently in Libya. Neat! And while this is an important discovery, the day ends poorly, as they overturn a car and wrecking it in the middle of the Sahara.
Almásy stays behind and sets up camp, surprisingly accompanied by Katherine. She kindly offers to him paintings of the hieroglyphics, but he coldly refuses them. She storms off. And SPEAKING of storms, they’re in the desert. She quickly comes back once a massive sandstorm hits the camp, and the two take refuge within the wrecked car.
Buried in the car, the two really begin to bond, as Almásy recounts different types of wind. But Katherine seems to be taken by the more open and caring side of him, somehow opened up by the storm. The next morning, they wake up a bit too late, and are missed by their returning friends until nightfall. In the process, it’s discovered that Almásy‘s actually been harboring affections for Katherine quite a while, and she finds this out by reading entries in his journal.
In the present, Hana appears to be falling for Kip, who may or may not be feeling the same; it isn’t made especially clear as of yet. Back in the past, Almásy returns to acting cold towards Katherine, most likely to allow her to preserve her marriage, as she begins to feel the same towards him.
Here’s the problem, though: he still has sand in his hair.
Yeah, so, I couldn’t find good footage or a GIF of it, but they go the fuck AT it, lemme tell you. It’s a very passionate beginning, but that leads to a solemn end, as the two realize that she’s married, and he’s not a big fan of commitment. And so, they part ways.
Not that it matters, because after their one-shot love affair, neither of them can truly forget. Christmastime is here, and Katherine is serving as a nurse. However, she’s soon the one getting a check-uNo. No. That was terrible, holy shit...
Lemme tell you one thing: this movie is pretty good at partially concealed yet highly passionate love scenes. However, they almost get caught, when it’s revealed that Santa at the party is actually Geoffrey. Katherine confesses to him that she’s tired of the desert, but they’re stranded there at the moment, due to the impending World War II.
Which, I think, is a good place to pause. Only at the halfway mark of this long, LONG movie. See you in Part 2!

60 years since 1st American in space: Tourists lining up (AP) Sixty years after Alan Shepard became the first American in space, everyday people are on the verge of following in his cosmic footsteps. Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin used Wednesday’s anniversary to kick off an auction for a seat on the company’s first crew spaceflight—a short Shepard-like hop launched by a rocket named New Shepard. The Texas liftoff is targeted for July 20, the date of the Apollo 11 moon landing. Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic aims to kick off tourist flights next year. And Elon Musk’s SpaceX will launch a billionaire and his sweepstakes winners in September. That will be followed by a flight by three businessmen to the International Space Station in January.
The U.S. birthrate is falling; other countries have faced the same problem (Washington Post) With the U.S. birthrate declining for the sixth year in a row and undergoing its largest drop in nearly 50 years, according to provisional data released Wednesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the United States is facing a dilemma with which many wealthy nations in Europe and Asia have long grappled. Instead of trying to ramp up immigration, some governments have tried subsidizing fertility treatments, offering free day care and generous parental leave, and paying thousands of dollars in cash grants to parents. But there’s little evidence that these policies have been effective on a large scale. South Korea, for instance, spent roughly $120 billion between 2005 and 2018 to incentivize having children, but its birthrate continued to fall. Singapore began offering new child-care subsidies, more-generous maternity leave policies and grants for new parents that today amount to $7,330 per baby. But those interventions didn’t reverse the trend: Singapore currently has the world’s third-lowest fertility rate. And Japan, Russia, Estonia and other nations have similar problems.
Protest road blockades halt Colombian coffee exports, federation says (Reuters) Road blockades connected to anti-government protests in Colombia, which marked their eighth day on Wednesday, have halted shipments of top agricultural export coffee, the head of the grower’s federation said. The protests, originally called in opposition to a now-canceled tax reform plan, are now demanding the government take action to tackle poverty, police violence and inequalities in the health and education systems. Twenty-four people, mostly demonstrators, have died. “We are stopped completely, exports are stopped, there is no movement of coffee to ports nor internally,” federation head Roberto Velez said in a phone interview.
20 dead in Rio de Janeiro shootout (Reuters) At least 20 people, including a police officer, died on Thursday in a shootout during a police operation against drug traffickers in Rio de Janeiro’s Jacarezinho shanty town, O Globo newspaper reported on its website. Two passengers on a metro train were also wounded in the shooting in the northern Rio neighborhood, the newspaper said.
Gunboats and blockade threats as U.K., France clash over fishing (NBC News) The U.K. and France were engaged in a naval standoff on Thursday as a long-simmering dispute over post-Brexit fishing rights escalated in the English Channel. France deployed two maritime patrol boats to the waters off the British Channel island of Jersey, its navy said, after the British Navy dispatched two of its own vessels to the area late Wednesday. The dueling moves came as a flotilla of French fishing trawlers sailed to the Jersey port of St. Helier to protest over fishing rights. The French government has suggested it could cut power supplies to the island if its fishermen are not granted full access to U.K. fishing waters under post-Brexit trading terms. Clément Beaune, the French secretary of state for European affairs, told AFP on Thursday that Paris will “not be intimidated” by the British. On the other side of the Channel, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson pledged his "unwavering support" for the island after he spoke with Jersey officials about the prospect of a French blockade. Jersey, the largest of the Channel Islands with a population of 108,000, is geographically closer to France than Britain. It sits just 14 miles off the French coast and receives most of its electricity from France via undersea cables.
Ukraine wants aid, NATO support from Blinken’s visit (AP) U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with his Ukrainian counterpart in Kyiv Thursday, telling him that he was there to “reaffirm strongly” Washington’s commitment to Ukraine’s “sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence.” Blinken also assured Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba that the U.S. was committed “to work with you and continue to strengthen your own democracy, building institutions, advancing your reforms against corruption.” By visiting so early in his tenure, before any trip to Russia, Blinken is signaling that Ukraine is a high foreign-policy priority for President Joe Biden’s administration. But what he can, or will, deliver in the meeting later with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is unclear.
India hits another grim record as it scrambles for oxygen supply (AP) Infections in India hit another grim daily record on Thursday as demand for medical oxygen jumped seven-fold and the government denied reports that it was slow in distributing life-saving supplies from abroad. The number of new confirmed cases breached 400,000 for the second time since the devastating surge began last month. The 412,262 cases pushed India’s tally to more than 21 million. The Health Ministry also reported 3,980 deaths in the last 24 hours, bringing the total to 230,168. Experts believe both figures are an undercount. Eleven COVID-19 patients died as the pressure in the oxygen line dropped suddenly in a government medical college hospital in Chengalpet town in southern India on Wednesday night, possibly because of a faulty valve, The Times of India newspaper reported. Hospital authorities said they had repaired the pipeline last week, but the consumption of oxygen doubled since then, the daily said.
Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid gains chance to form government, oust Netanyahu (Washington Post) Yair Lapid, a former news anchor and leader of Israel’s centrist opposition, was picked to negotiate a new governing coalition Wednesday, opening the possibility of Israel getting its first government not led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in more than a decade. President Reuven Rivlin tapped Lapid to make the next attempt to form a government one day after Netanyahu failed to assemble a parliamentary majority after 28 days of effort. Under Israel’s system, Lapid also has four weeks to craft a power-sharing plan. If he falls short, the president could open to the process to any member of the Knesset or call for Israel’s fifth election since the spring of 2019. Lapid will face a stiff challenge in trying to find common ground among the range of anti-Netanyahu parties elected in March. As a bloc, they would control enough seats to secure a majority. But ideologically, they range from the far right to the far left of Israel’s political spectrum. They also include Israeli Arab parties that traditionally play no part in supporting governing coalitions but that may be needed this time.
Instagram fuels rise in black-market sales of maids into Persian Gulf servitude (Washington Post) The advent of Instagram in recent years has helped create an international black market for migrant workers, in particular women recruited in Africa and Asia who are sold into servitude as maids in Persian Gulf countries. Unlicensed agents have exploited the social media platform to place these women into jobs that often lack documentation or assurances of proper pay and working conditions. Several women who were marketed via Instagram described being treated essentially as captives and forced to work grueling hours for far less money than they had been promised. “They advertise us on social media, then the employer picks. Then we are delivered to their house. We are not told anything about the employers. You’re just told to take your stuff, and a driver takes you there,” said Vivian, 24, from Kenya. Domestic servants sold on the platform described encountering threats, exploitation and abuse. The agencies which marketed them, meanwhile, made thousands of dollars. In response to a request for comment last month, an Instagram spokesperson asked for the list of accounts identified by The Post so company officials could investigate. Instagram has since deleted these accounts.
Nonuplets: Woman From Mali Gives Birth To 9 Babies (NPR) A Malian woman has given birth to nine babies, in what could become a world record. Halima Cissé had been expecting to have seven newborns: ultrasound sessions had failed to spot two of her babies. "The newborns (five girls and four boys) and the mother are all doing well," Mali's health minister, Dr. Fanta Siby, said in an announcement about the births. Professor Youssef Alaoui, medical director of the private Ain Borja clinic in Casablanca where Cissé gave birth, said the babies were born at 30 weeks. The newborns weighed between 500 grams and 1 kilogram (about 1.1 to 2.2 pounds), he told journalists. The clinic has deployed a team of around 30 staff members to aid the mother's delivery and care for her nine children.
Nigeria reels from nationwide wave of deadly violence (The Guardian) Nigeria’s president Muhammadu Buhari has come under mounting pressure from critics and allies alike as the country reels from multiple security crises that have claimed hundreds of lives in recent weeks. An alarming wave of violence has left millions in Africa’s most populous country in uproar at the collapse in security. Attacks by jihadist groups in the north-east have been compounded by a sharp rise in abductions targeting civilians in schools and at interstate links across Nigeria. Mass killings by bandit groups in rural towns, a reported rise in armed robberies in urban areas and increasingly daring attacks on security forces by pro-Biafran militants in the south-east have also all risen. In April alone, almost 600 civilians were killed across the country and at least 406 abducted by armed groups, according to analysis by the Council on Foreign Relations. The violence has left much of the country on edge and Buhari facing the fiercest criticism since he took office.
