A MESSY HAIR SATURDAY My hair is a complete mess these days. A lot of breakage, tangled hair that I can't fix with finger detangling and I think it's the protein in my formal products that causes it. Yet I don't know for sure what it is really but I started using the Shea Moisture low porosity products that are protein-free. The shampoo and conditioner were great not heavy on the hair and I left a bit of the conditioner inside the hair to keep it soft and used the protein-free leave-in after. Then I twisted my hair with a little bit of Shea Moisture's Curl Enhancing Smoothie. Lets see how that works out. While yesterday was all about hair, today is all about food since I'll be at a food fair with lots of vegan options. 30 hours after applying the product and there is still white visible. I gently tied it down with a satin scarf last night and after laughing at my own helmet head this morning, jumped in the shower and let the steam do its thing. At this point, once it's fully dry, if I touch it to twist or stretch there will be flakes. . I repeat: no matter what you see on YouTube, KNOW YOUR HAIR so that you know what types of products will work and which to avoid like the natural hair plague! What may work for them, may turn your own natural hair into a styling shambles. But what may not work for them may be the best thing that ever happened to your natural hair. And who knows? What works for them may work perfectly for you, too. But take every hair product review with a grain of salt and first know your hair. . So... about this white residue on my strands today... . I wanted to try a new product this morning that I knew without a doubt would turn out like this so I could show you how products can have different results on different heads of hair. I watched quite a few videos yesterday with this product, even from other naturals who claimed they have low-porosity hair. "It's white, now, but it'll disappear soon"; "This product just melts into my hair"; "Look at this curl definition - it's as good as EcoStyler"... . Um, no; I beg to differ - nothing is as good as EcoStyler (fight me). The problem is that we get caught up in product hype - we see a product magically work on a YouTuber or blogger's natural hair and want those products to work on our hair so badly that we forget what we've learned about OUR natural hair. Don't get me wrong - product reviews can be really helpful if you're looking for a specific new product to try, and IF they are honest reviews that include ALL the information. And this product is probably awesome for another natural with a different type of natural hair. But if you know that your hair is low porosity, high density, with a thick coarse texture, you know good and well that a thick cream, curling custard, or smoothie is NOT going to absorb into your strands. So, as I usually say to myself as I browse the natural aisles of Target, 'girl, put the pudding down and walk away immediately!' . So here I sit, SIX hours after applying this curling smoothie in wet hair, with still-wet-still-white strands. 'What did I learn?' *Every product is not for every body.
