What kind of work do you make and why?

I have spent many decades devoted to the beauty, destruction, and the sacredness of the land. My artwork flows freely onto panel boards and paper in a give and take gift from the universe. My art varied in abstract expression, realism and conceptual artwork of the rocks, trees, that were part of my early life walking through the paths and streams of my childhood. I became determined to save the land. My artwork is about becoming one with the land. I look to the trees as my guide. They are very generous. Several years ago, the trees invited me to join them. I willingly agreed. I was taught about the beginning of time, of coming to life on this earth. How things came into being—from object to being, burning energy, living, and dying. My paintings show entities joining, willingly or not into new groups. I watched and wondered if, or how I could influence how they came together and how it worked. Perhaps I could learn to change the world.

How have the events of 2020 affected your life and art practice?

I became ill and was hospitalized in January. Three weeks later my favorite family member died, we were about the same age. I was too ill to visit her. None of this was Covid related. My family support devolved. My illness and the stress drew me into depression. Covid became regionally known. I was living in a surging city. Because of my age and other significant factors, my friends in my building (almost all artists) protected me. They knew I was in a dangerous position. They kept me from going outside. They shopped for me and saw to it that I was taking care of myself. They took me to my general practitioners and kidney specialists. Personally, I did what they said but was growing into my couch, self-isolating, stressed, sleeping trying to figure out loss of family and illness. As the months went by, I realized I lost the ability to make art. I lost the two stabilizing influences of my whole life, my niece, and my practice.

What type of pivot, adaptations or actions have occurred in your art practice that could be helpful to other artists due to these events?

In April, I received a phone call from an old friend, asking if I would like to collaborate on painting. A bolt of energy struck my brain and I immediately said, “Yes!” In the past we both worked on paper and had broad and in-depth the use of mark making. I used graphite sticks and pencil, she used charcoal and other softer materials. Heidi’s work is based on the Seven Elements, Earth, Air, Fire, Space, Water, and Dark and Light. My work is based on landscape and covers straight forward realism and abstraction. Recently my work has been informed by conversations with the tree and internal conversations as I become the tree. I gained access to ancient tree memory and a view of how the earth came together from bits of things, that were perhaps compliant in being together or not. Once together they became active organisms. Heidi and I both seek connections to nature and try to express how deeply that connection is to the heart of our being. We completed a painting or two, then her mother died. We continued to work together to prevent an emotional freefall. We were hanging onto a seemingly finite space in our hearts for emotional stability. This place is an almost sacred place to artists, it is the kernel that brings forth our inner thoughts and being into the world. Stop that flow and we cease changing and adding to the culture’s, activism, and political thoughts that changes the world. We continued to collaborate and began to slowly ignite that piece in us that sours from isolation, and self-doubt, fear, and aloneness.

Where do you see yourself and your work a year from now?

I see me continuing to think and work in collaboration, with Heidi Curko and with other artists. I will use the Eileen S. Kaminsky residency at Mana to produce a body of artwork and dialogue from the other participating artists to plan for an exhibition. I also plan to resume my own personal artwork and build a portfolio of my own.

What has been the one “saving grace” that has helped you through this difficult time?

Friends who consistently and tirelessly helped me get through Covid time, whether with simple support or deeply personal reconstruction of my life.

What advice would you give other artists?

If we cannot live in these times, create better times.

What would you like people to experience when they see your work?

A seamlessness of the possibilities of the human mind and love. A caring for the earth in powerful abstractions. I hope they see people enjoying their life and functioning to the best of their ability and caring to share with others.

Surfers Paradise Tiki Village Resort Sold For $30m

LANDMARK Surfers Paradise resort Tiki Village has sold for more than $30 million and appears poised to make way for a major tower.

An interstate buyer has consummated an unconditional deal to buy the riverfront timeshare property, a favourite with schoolies.

Brad Merkur, of Ray White Commercial, yesterday said he believed the buyer would lodge a development application for the 4598sq m site.

The property has an unlimited height zoning with the potential to build 720 apartments subject to council approval.

“Tiki’s on a blue-chip site and deserves something special ,” said Mr Merkur, who handled the sale in tandem with agent Sime Curko.

“The sale shows there’s still a lot of confidence in the Gold Coast from Australian buyers and puts lie to perceptions that the only buyers around for highrise sites are from offshore.”

The price being paid for Tiki Village, in which the units have been sold with vacant possession , has not been disclosed but property sources yesterday said the figure “topped $30m” .

Tiki Village is the second Surfers Paradise timeshare resort to get the “time’s up” call.

In 2015 the 14-level beachfront Surfers Royale in Northcliffe Tce sold for $22.37 million to the sons of the Ridong Group’s Riyu Li, initiator of the three-tower Jewel project.

The eight-level Tiki, built by the late Dan Roberts at the start of the 1980s, was the first project for architect Desmond Brooks when he started the DBI group.

It was refurbished in 1994 and then again in 2012, when it underwent a $2.2m upgrade.

The sale of the 69-unit resort includes a 1472sq m seabed lease and two single-level buildings housing five tenancies.

There is a marina that has been a pick-up , drop-off point for cruise boats.

Tiki Village’s timeshare apartments are held through the Tiki Village Timeshare Trust, for which the Classic Holdingslinked Tiki Village International is the responsible entity.
