What We Learned from Flying a Helicopter on Mars
The Ingenuity Mars Helicopter made history – not only as the first aircraft to perform powered, controlled flight on another world – but also for exceeding expectations, pushing the limits, and setting the stage for future NASA aerial exploration of other worlds.
Built as a technology demonstration designed to perform up to five experimental test flights over 30 days, Ingenuity performed flight operations from the Martian surface for almost three years. The helicopter ended its mission on Jan. 25, 2024, after sustaining damage to its rotor blades during its 72nd flight.
So, what did we learn from this small but mighty helicopter?
We can fly rotorcraft in the thin atmosphere of other planets.
Ingenuity proved that powered, controlled flight is possible on other worlds when it took to the Martian skies for the first time on April 19, 2021.
Flying on planets like Mars is no easy feat: The Red Planet has a significantly lower gravity – one-third that of Earth’s – and an extremely thin atmosphere, with only 1% the pressure at the surface compared to our planet. This means there are relatively few air molecules with which Ingenuity’s two 4-foot-wide (1.2-meter-wide) rotor blades can interact to achieve flight.
Ingenuity performed several flights dedicated to understanding key aerodynamic effects and how they interact with the structure and control system of the helicopter, providing us with a treasure-trove of data on how aircraft fly in the Martian atmosphere.
Now, we can use this knowledge to directly improve performance and reduce risk on future planetary aerial vehicles.
Creative solutions and “ingenuity” kept the helicopter flying longer than expected.
Over an extended mission that lasted for almost 1,000 Martian days (more than 33 times longer than originally planned), Ingenuity was upgraded with the ability to autonomously choose landing sites in treacherous terrain, dealt with a dead sensor, dusted itself off after dust storms, operated from 48 different airfields, performed three emergency landings, and survived a frigid Martian winter.
Fun fact: To keep costs low, the helicopter contained many off-the-shelf-commercial parts from the smartphone industry - parts that had never been tested in deep space. Those parts also surpassed expectations, proving durable throughout Ingenuity’s extended mission, and can inform future budget-conscious hardware solutions.
There is value in adding an aerial dimension to interplanetary surface missions.
Ingenuity traveled to Mars on the belly of the Perseverance rover, which served as the communications relay for Ingenuity and, therefore, was its constant companion. The helicopter also proved itself a helpful scout to the rover.
After its initial five flights in 2021, Ingenuity transitioned to an “operations demonstration,” serving as Perseverance’s eyes in the sky as it scouted science targets, potential rover routes, and inaccessible features, while also capturing stereo images for digital elevation maps.
Airborne assets like Ingenuity unlock a new dimension of exploration on Mars that we did not yet have – providing more pixels per meter of resolution for imaging than an orbiter and exploring locations a rover cannot reach.
Tech demos can pay off big time.
Ingenuity was flown as a technology demonstration payload on the Mars 2020 mission, and was a high risk, high reward, low-cost endeavor that paid off big. The data collected by the helicopter will be analyzed for years to come and will benefit future Mars and other planetary missions.
Just as the Sojourner rover led to the MER-class (Spirit and Opportunity) rovers, and the MSL-class (Curiosity and Perseverance) rovers, the team believes Ingenuity’s success will lead to future fleets of aircraft at Mars.
In general, NASA’s Technology Demonstration Missions test and advance new technologies, and then transition those capabilities to NASA missions, industry, and other government agencies. Chosen technologies are thoroughly ground- and flight-tested in relevant operating environments — reducing risks to future flight missions, gaining operational heritage and continuing NASA’s long history as a technological leader.

At the time of posting (5:17 UTC) Curiosity has been on Mars for 11 Earth years!
There's a post claiming that Curiosity sings itself happy birthday each year - it did it's first year, but it hasn't since. Power is an in-demand resource, especially this year when we're in the dead of winter with an aging battery and still trying to pack in science as we climb Mount Sharp!
This past earth year has been a great one for the decade-old rover. We crossed into the sulfate region, which contains more "salty" minerals which probably formed later in Mars' history when the planet was transitioning from its wet past to its dry present.
Despite this we still saw evidence of past water, which we thought we'd left behind lower down the mountain!
We're not just looking down with our robot geologist - the present climate is a treasure trove. It's the middle of the cloudy season on Mars, and earlier this year Curiosity saw some stunning twilight clouds lit by the just-set sun. This included seeing crepuscular rays for the first time on Mars, and a stunning, feather-like cloud.
Curiosity has faced challenging terrain from the hard rocks of the marker band to the slippy slidy ridge it navigated quite recently, but 11 years after landing it's still going strong with a team back on earth helping it navigate the challenges it faces.
Happy Earth birthday, Curiosity 🥳

New NASA images reveal giant hole in Curiosity rover's wheel after 12 years of 'abuse' on Mars
Images captured by Curiosity's onboard cameras show several large tears in the tire of one of the rover's wheels. However, the damage does not appear to be slowing the roaming robot down.
Curiosity first touched down on Mars on Aug. 5, 2012 and was initially only expected to last for two years. But the hardy rover has defied expectations and has lasted 4,323 Martian days, or Sols, on the Red Planet, traveling more than 20 miles (32 kilometers) around the Gale Crater, where it originally landed.
However, new photos taken by Curiosity's Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI) and released by NASA on Sept. 24 reveal that the rover's epic journey has taken a toll on the robot's middle right wheel. The images show several large tears in the wheel's heavily scratched tire, including one particularly large hole that reveals the wheel’s inner mechanisms. It is currently unclear when these holes first emerged or if any of the rover's other wheels have suffered similar damage.
The damage may look bad but Curiosity "is still holding up well despite taking some of the worst abuse from Mars," mission operations engineer Ashley Stroupe wrote in the statement.

HYENA (DISNEY VILLAINS AU)
My works are 14+ ONLY. If you’re under 14 DO NOT interact with me or any of my works. NO SPAM-LIKING PLEASE
Pairing: Hyena hybrid!Wooyoung x fem reader
Word count: 4,025
Note: I had to make Wooyo the hyenas because of his high-pitched, squeaky laugh lol
Your feet wobbled slightly as you stepped over chunky rocks. Clacking sounds followed after as some were knocked loose by your steps. You took a trip out to the desert to do some exploring, wanting to try something new and different for once, as well as check out a place you had never been to.
You had rented a Land Rover to get around in and were told to stay on a path which was marked by stakes in the ground. You were a fairly good navigator and the instructions were simple, so you weren't worried about getting lost. Plus, it's not like you were gonna go exploring places far off from the path.
The desert was exactly what you expected it to be—deserted. Which, in all honesty, was perfectly fine with you. The last thing you wanted was to run into some animal. You were really only out there to look at the scenery and take photos.
You made it to a slightly higher elevation where you spotted a cave somewhere in the distance, your interest immediately piqued. The main thing that interested you was where this cave was situated. The cavern was located near the ground, seeming almost like a burrow, but with cavelike characteristics; a large rock above the opening and messily clustered along the top and around the entrance of the cavern. Your curiosity got the best of you as you traipsed down the rocky hillside and onto the dusty dirt ground. You moved over to the opening of the cave and peered inside curiously. The opening was large enough for a person to walk in, which was odd.
You stepped inside, nearly slipping on the dirt as the ground sloped downward.
"Incredible." You murmured as you gazed around at the large amount of space inside.
A faint noise caught your attention, pulling your focus away from the well-constructed burrow. You furrowed your brows, unconsciously moving ahead.
The sound of cackling could be heard from somewhere within the cave. As it got louder, it sounded almost hyena-like. The ominous sound sent a shiver down your spine.
Thinking you walked right into some animal's home, you began moving back towards the entrance, keeping your eyes on the endless abyss where the laughter emitted from.
"Well, well, well, look what walked into my cave."
The voice startled you.
Was there a person living in the cave?
"Wh-Who's there?" You stuttered out, taking another step backwards.
A silhouette appeared in the shadows, slowly moving closer. The first thing you saw were bright, yellow irises, staring at you like a piece of meat. The sight was unsettling but it's not what really disturbed you—what really disturbed you were the ears on top of his head and the sharp canines in his mouth. The hybrid grinned wickedly at you as he slinked closer, his claws dragging along the cave wall making a eerie scraping sound that made you feel sick to your stomach.
"I didn't mean to trespass. I didn't know anyone lived here." You apologized, backing away.
"Do you see open caves and go inside as you please?" The man... animal, asked.
"I didn't think anyone lived here." You said, taking a few steps back.
"Why are you trying to run away?"
You couldn't think of an answer.
"Don't worry. I don't bite... hard." His voice was silken, but threatening, as there was an ominous undertone to his words.
You stumbled back into a corner, trying to get away, only to have the hybrid trap you between his arms. His head tilted to the side, his gold irises scanning you before he brought his face close to yours.
"How lucky am I?" He grinned, showing off a pair of sharp canines. "A delicious meal walking right into my cave."
"W-what?" You stuttered, your eyes unable to look away from the hyena's sharp fangs protruding from both his top and bottom rows of teeth.
He ignored you, leaning down to your neck, inhaling deeply, a short, guttural and animalistic growl rumbling in his throat.
"You smell delectable. I could just eat you up."
Your eyes instinctively screwed shut. If you were about to meet your demise, you didn't want the last thing you saw to be razor sharp teeth. His hot breath fanned against your neck as he moved even closer. You trembled, preparing to feel his long fangs dig into your flesh.
"But I won't." He added. "That would be such a waste. After all, a pretty girl like you deserves to be saved."
Your eyes flew open in both shock and fear. Shock, because your life was going to be spared. Fear, because you weren't sure what he was going to do with you.
He brought one of his clawed hands to your chin, holding it between his fingers as he tilted your face up.
Out of pure instinct, you pushed him as hard as you could away from you. To your shock, he stumbled back, hitting the dirt wall on the opposite side of the cavern, staggering slightly. You didn't think you pushed him that hard, but based on the way his jacket was flung off one shoulder by the impact, you'd say you shoved him a lot harder than you assumed.
That's when you noticed his thin figure. Even though he was clad in leather and fur, you could still see how slender he was. He regained his footing and adjusted his jacket, dusting his vest off as he glared at you, his eyes almost glowing with rage. Despite that, all you could think about was his slender figure. Though he was a hybrid, he was still part human. A real person.
"You seem a little underweight." You commented aloud.
He ran his hands through his black and blonde hair out of annoyance. "It's not exactly easy to find food out here, you know." He grumbled, his jaw clenched. "In case you haven't noticed, this place is deserted."
An idea suddenly popped into your head. One that would possibly save your life.
"What if I made you a deal?"
"A deal?" He scoffed. "What could you possibly offer me?"
"Food."
"I'm not interested in granola bars and trail mix, okay?"
"No, I mean a real meal."
"In exchange for what?"
"You letting me go."
"Elaborate."
"Come back to town with me and I'll treat you to a nice meal. Anything you want."
"Let me get this straight. You want me to go into town around people?"
"We'll be eating in my hotel room. It's safer that way."
He stared at you for a few moments, visibly considering his options. Then, he nodded. "Alright. Deal."
"Really?"
"Yeah. Why not?" He shrugged.
"Great! Follow me." Your tone was unusually peppy, and rightfully so. You quite literally just bargained your way out of being held captive.
The hybrid followed you to the Land Rover you rented, keeping a close eye on you. Though you seemed friendly, he didn't completely trust you yet. If you show any sign of untrustworthiness even once, he would rip you to shreds... maybe. He was so confused. His instincts told him that you were food and he was in desperate need of sustenance, however, his heart squeezed a little at the thought of hurting you.
"Come on." You beckoned after getting inside the car.
He shook away his thoughts and climbed inside, situating himself in the passenger seat as you started the engine, hearing it roar to life.
"I see these things going up and down this path all the time. I've always wondered what it would be like to ride in one." The hyena commented aloud.
He tried holding back his excitement, but you could see it in his eyes.
"Well, now you get to find out." You smiled, driving down the dirt road. "By the way, what's your name?"
"Wooyoung."
"I'm Y/n."
"Y/n." He repeated. "Can this thing go any faster?"
"It sure can." You punched the gas, causing the vehicle to jerk forward before zooming down the path.
The engine thrummed loudly in response to the sudden speed change. The road was straight, allowing you the freedom to do such thrilling things.
You took a moment to glance over at Wooyoung, noticing how he leaned forward in his seat, his hands gripping onto the dashboard. To your surprise, a joyful laugh left him. Smiling to yourself, you turned your attention back to the road.
Wooyoung watched as rocks and trees whizzed by, the warm wind blowing through his hair. It was so liberating and nothing like he'd ever experienced.
Unadulterated joy began bubbling up inside the hybrid and before he could stop it, laughter began spilling out of him. High pitched, hyena-like cackles escaped him without any warning, a bright smile on his face.
The sight was almost heartwarming. A "feral" hybrid like him laughing and having fun was unheard of. You had to remind yourself that the man beside you could was still part hyena and could attack at any given moment.
You returned back to your hotel, leading Wooyoung inside. You got some odd stares from passersby on the street as well as hotel staff, but you paid no mind to it—or tried to, at least. You knew seeing a feral hybrid out in civilization was probably startling to some people.
Once you were back in your hotel room and away from prying eyes, you felt like you could relax a little.
"Alright." You started, grabbing the room service menu. "Here. Pick whatever you want."
He took the menu, glancing down at it. Your eyes lingered on his long claws as he browsed the dishes.
It wasn't long until he chose what he wanted. You chose something for yourself and placed the order.
"It'll be about 20 minutes. You can get a shower while you wait. If you want to."
"Are you saying I smell?"
"No! Not at all." You shook your head. "I just assumed since—"
"Don't try to domesticate me." He snapped, cutting you off.
You backed off, muttering an apology.
The 20 minute wait felt like an eternity. Wooyoung stood in the corner of the hotel room while you sat on the bed. The atmosphere in the room was tense and had you feeling on edge. Relief flooded you when there was a knock on the room's door followed by, "Room service!"
"Oh, good. The food's here." You stood up from the bed, answering the door.
When you brought the food into the room, Wooyoung straightened up, his eyes widening slightly in interest. He sniffed the air a few times before moving closer.
"Come on. You can sit down." You gestured to the desk, placing his food down.
You took a seat on the end of your bed, watching the hybrid. He stared at the utensils for a moment before grabbing the fork, stabbing the thick piece of steak with it. You started to interject and tell him that he could use his knife, but decided against it, allowing him to eat as he pleased.
He began gnawing on the steak, his sharp canines piercing the meat. You could tell he hadn't eaten in quite some time. After a few moments, you looked away and started eating your own food.
"I've never had anything like this before." He commented, mouth full of steak. "It's so good."
"Yes, it is." You nodded. "I'm glad you like it."
Once the two of you finished eating, you took notice of how late it had gotten. You were supposed to take Wooyoung back to his den after you fed him.
"It's almost dark. I don't think I can get you back in time." You told the hybrid.
"But you are taking me back, right?"
"Yes, of course. We'll just have to wait until tomorrow. You'll have to stay the night here."
"You want me to sleep in a bed?"
"Well, yes." You responded.
"Whatever." He muttered.
You tried to look past his snappy behavior and went to get the pullout couch ready. The room you rented was a normal hotel room with a bathroom, one bed, a pullout sofa, an office desk, TV, microwave, and mini fridge. Nothing special, but equipped with all the necessities.
"Here you go." You gestured.
Wooyoung took a seat, testing out the little mattress before lying down, not bothering to get under the sheets. You left the room to change into your pajamas and prepare for bed. When you returned, Wooyoung was still lying in the same spot, his golden-colored irises watching your every move. His eyes followed you as you walked across the small room over to your bed, slipping under the covers.
"I'm not gonna do anything." You told him.
"I don't know that."
You let out a sigh. "Goodnight, Wooyoung."
You clicked off the bedside lamp and laid down, pulling the covers up over you.
It took you a while to get to sleep, as you were a bit nervous sharing a room with a hyena hybrid. Part of you trusted him, thinking that he was just a lonely person, but the other half of you had to remind yourself that he was a feral and would attack you if necessary.
You rolled over in bed, the sun seeping in through the hotel room curtains. You stretched your limbs, turning to check on Wooyoung, not expecting the sight that met your eyes.
The hybrid was lying on his stomach and his face was squished against the pillow, small snores leaving him as he snoozed away. His ear twitched in his sleep, causing you to let out a quiet chuckle. He looked so peaceful and docile. You wanted so badly to squish his cheeks and give him a gentle kiss on the nose, but fought the urge to do so.
Just then, Wooyoung's eyes snapped open, staring directly at you.
"Good morning." You greeted him.
He quickly pushed himself up, seeming a bit frantic. Once he realized everything was fine, he relaxed.
"Well." You started, sitting upright. "I'm gonna get ready. It won't take long."
Wooyoung's eyes followed you as you went to your suitcase, grabbing a fresh change of clothes and going into the bathroom.
His heart felt heavy at the thought of being sent back home. Though he was still on edge around you, something in his chest tightened at the thought of separating from you.
The rental Land Rover came to a stop on the dirt road near the hyena's burrow. You put the car in park and turned to Wooyoung.
"Here we are." You announced.
As much as you didn't want him to leave, you knew he most likely wanted to go back to his den. And you wanted to kept your word. You only promised him a meal, nothing more.
You turned to Wooyoung who stayed in the passenger seat for a moment, staring out in the distance where his den was.
"Thanks for keeping your end of the deal." He told you.
"You're welcome."
He reluctantly got out of the car, walking towards his cave.
You weren't sure what to say. See you around? That would be stupid. You were going home in a couple days. You wouldn't see him.
"Well, goodbye." You finally spoke, putting the vehicle in drive.
"Wait." Wooyoung called out.
You paused, moving the gear shift into park.
"Yes?"
"I feel like I owe you." He told you.
"What? No. You promised to let me go and I promised to give you a nice meal. We're even."
"I still feel like I owe you. There's some nice places the tourists never show. Would you like to see them?"
The offer was nice and he seemed pretty set on making things up to you, so you agreed.
"Hop in." You gestured to the passenger seat.
Wooyoung took his place back in the seat and you took off, letting him lead the way.
The first place he showed you took a while to get to, but once you arrived, it was well worth your time. It was a vast stretch of land dotted with trees. A small herd of zebras stood around a small reservoir having a drink of water. You gasped in awe, pulling your camera out to snap a few photos.
"I haven't seen any animals around since I showed up here. I mainly came here for the scenery, but this is really nice."
"You have to go a little further to get to the good spots." Wooyoung told you.
"This is awesome." You marveled, stepping closer, taking more photos.
You stayed for a while until Wooyoung directed you to the next location. Each place he showed you was stunning. You were able to see all sorts of animals and get fairly close to some. It took a bit of driving to get to these places and sometimes you would have to get out of the car and walk, but you didn't mind. It was all well worth it.
The two of you sat on a large rock, watching a group of elephants walk across the long stretch of land.
"How do you know about all these places?" You asked.
"I get bored and tend to wander around."
"It must be lonely out here."
"Sometimes." He responded, his eyes staring out in the distance.
You were saddened by his response. You can't imagine what it's like to be out in the desert alone. You wanted to ask more, but he looked a little uncomfortable, so you changed the subject.
"Can I touch your claws?" You asked.
It's something you had been wanting to do. You had never encountered a hybrid with claws before so, naturally, you were intrigued.
He seemed amused by that question, letting out a chuckle. "Sure."
You took his hand, staring at his long, sharp nails. Your fingertips gently touched the end of his claws, feeling the sharp points of them.
Wooyoung watched you as you examined his hand, looking intently at his nails. The feeling of your fingertips running over his fingers and hand had him feeling extremely flustered.
He cleared his throat, pulling his hand away, unable to endure it any more.
"Come over here." He gestured, hopping off the rock he was perched on.
You followed behind as the both of you waded through the knee-high grass. He came to a stop at a hillside that overlooked a large part of the desert.
"Wow." You gaped. "This view is stunning."
"It is." Wooyoung smiled, softly.
You moved to stand under a tree, the shade giving you some relief from the heat of the sun's harsh rays. The warm breeze blew through your hair, helping to cool you off a bit.
You snapped a few photos of the scenery, wanting to remember it exactly as it is. You stayed and admired the view for quite some time before before heading back the way you came.
The two of you trekked through the grass, making on your way back to the vehicle. Just as you saw the Land Rover come into view, a low growl emitted from somewhere behind you. You spun around, a gasp leaving you at the horrifying sight; a dark, maroon-toned lion with a dark mane and a nasty scar over his eye slinked through the grass, his amber irises locked on you. A shiver ran down your spine as you took a step back.
Wooyoung's top lip curled back in a snarl as he pulled you behind him, keeping one arm protectively in front of you, shielding you from the predator prowling just mere feet away. The lion didn't seem to want to back down. Wooyoung bravely stepped closer, his claws ready to pierce into the animal as soon as it decided to attack.
You watched over Wooyoung's shoulder as the lion growled, taking a step forward. The hyena hybrid in front of you let out a menacing and threatening growl that rumbled in the back of his throat, warning the animal that if he got closer, it wouldn't be good.
The lion seemed to back off after that. For good measure, Wooyoung moved closer to the beast letting out an animalistic snarl as he bared his fangs. The lion gave an angry roar before turning away, leaving the two of you alone.
Your shoulders sagged in relief as Wooyoung turned towards you.
"Are you alright?" He asked, cupping your cheeks between his hands.
"Just a little shaken up, but I'll be fine." You assured him.
"Are you sure?"
"Yes, I'm sure." You reassured him. "The sun is about to go down. I should get you back to your cave and head back to the hotel."
"But you're gonna miss the best part."
"What do you mean?"
"The stars."
"The stars?" You repeated.
"Yeah. I know a really good spot for stargazing. We'll have a great view."
The sun set and you found yourself sitting on the hood of your rental car which was parked off the trail and out in the middle of a grassy area. A myriad of stars hung in the sky above, standing out against the dark blanket that cloaked the atmosphere. Every once in a while, one of the stars would twinkle slightly, flickering for just a moment.
"Thanks for not eating me." You spoke up, cutting through the comfortable silence.
Wooyoung let out a short chuckle. "You're welcome, but I wouldn't have done it, anyway."
"Really?"
"Yeah."
"Why not? Did you think I'd taste bad?" You joked.
"No. It's not that." He shook his head. "I just couldn't do it. You looked too innocent."
You weren't sure if you should be flattered or insulted. Either way, your life was spared, and for that you were thankful.
"Well, that's reassuring. I think." You chuckled.
"Sorry. That came out wrong." He let out a sigh, frustrated about something that you weren't aware of.
"Are you alright?"
"No." He groaned. "My mind is a mess right now."
"Why don't you just tell me what's on your mind, then? It doesn't matter if it doesn't make sense. Just talk it out." You told him.
"Alright. For starters, I had a really good time. These past two days have been amazing and honestly, I don't really wanna go back to my regular life. The thought of it kinda scares me."
Your brows raised slightly in surprise. You kept your composure, but on the inside you were freaking out. This whole time you'd been worried about leaving him to return to his normal life and come to find out, he didn't want to go back. You two were on the same page.
"I shouldn't be feeling this way. I shouldn't be attached to you. I shouldn't want to leave my den. I'm a feral hybrid—a wild animal. I'm not supposed to be feeling these things, but I do." He confessed.
"Wooyoung, would you like to come home with me?" You asked.
He seemed caught off guard by your offer.
"You can come live with me. I have an extra room. It'll be different from the life you're used to, but the offer is there if you want it."
"Yes." He answered immediately. "I do."
"You're sure?"
"Absolutely. After experiencing life away from the desert, I realize that's the life I want. Plus, everything is so much better, especially the food. The bed was nice too."
"That was just a pullout. Wait until you sleep in a real bed."
Wooyoung's eyes seemed to sparkle with excitement after hearing that.
"Come on." You beckoned. "Let's head back to the hotel. I'll let you sleep in the big bed tonight." You slid off the hood of the car, Wooyoung following behind.
"Can we share the bed?" He asked, timidly as he got into the passenger seat.
"Only if you shower."
"Do I smell?" He questioned with a pout.
"No, but you've been living out in the wild and I think you should clean up before crawling into a clean bed."
"That's fair." He shrugged.
"Then it's settled." You gave a nod of finality before driving back the way you came.

The Exhale - orphan account (7.5k, T)
The window over the stove is open. He can hear Ron talking excitedly and Rose laughing outside, can hear Hermione humming softly to herself as she turns the pages of her paper. He takes a sip of coffee; it's warm on his tongue, a soft comfort in his stomach. Five days ago, his tiny flat in Diagon Alley was crammed full of his friends, his family. Hagrid knocked his head on the ceiling. Everyone sang Happy Birthday over a lopsided cake, the one with Hugo's handprint in the frosting. Nothing is wrong. Hermione stops humming and makes a soft, concerned sound. "Harry, look at this." She shows him an article--one tucked away in the back pages. There's a photo, but it's not moving; must be a Muggle paper. "NASA have just landed another rover on Mars. It's called Curiosity, and look, this is so--I don't know if it's sweet or sad, but--it's all alone out there, and they programmed it to sing itself Happy Birthday." Nothing is wrong, but Harry starts crying.

Ooh! I have a question about Halley’s Comet and Curiosity’s budding romance. How did that start and how do the others feel about it? I personally think it’s flat out adorable!
Curiosity found out about Halley's Comet when she returned from one of her journeys to visit Pluto and the rest. She was unaware of the rovers at this point, at least their sentience. As such, she didn't even bat an eye at them as he passed by Mars with gifts for him.
That is when Curiosity saw her. He saw her golden crown, her ethereal form, and the sheer joy of her very being, and instantly he was drawn to her. She seemed to him to be his other half. Where he sang and projected himself through vocalization and tale, she was a walking piece of art. She was his muse and everything he sought to embody in glory.
It didn't begin as love, merely infatuation. But when Halley landed to give Mars her gifts, she decided to stay a while and meet the rovers. She got along with all of them obviously, but Curiosity made it a point to speak with her and sing his songs. Against all the odds, she actually enjoyed his singing a great deal, and from there, a habit formed. Whenever she came near, she always stopped to listen to Curiosity sing. And when he sang, she danced across the stars to show her appreciation.
One thing led to another, and now she returns far more frequently just to hear her small suitor sing to her. She loves his voice and he loves to produce melodies worthy of her attention. They exchange gifts, and often, Halley brings back things like instruments from other worlds for her lovely suitor to learn to play. She will forever adore his music, even if sometimes it doesn't quite work out the way he wants it to.
Mars personally thinks their relationship is adorable and can already sense the budding bond of a Titan and her speaker forming between them. Halley will never have citizens of her own, but she can have Curiosity, and that brings Mars peace. Pluto personally hates Curiosity, but its more out of principle than anything else. He doesn't think Curiosity can properly represent Halley and thus has little love for him. Moon could care less about the drama of his extended family, but Earth is quite invested in their developing romance. She loves seeing new life come from the love shared between two who are joined in whatever oaths they see fit to take. (She may or may not be silently hoping that somehow, Halley and Curiosity can give her some more little ones to adore.)
The other rovers for the most part think that Curiosity and Halley are gross and or weird, but they don't really comment. Well, except Spirit, Opportunity, Perseverance, and occasionally Zhurong. Zhurong doesn't comment as much as he makes treats for the two, and Opportunity is more fond of teasing kindly ever now and then. But Spirit and Perseverance? They are menaces and mock Curiosity relentlessly, Spirit with a little more love than his counterpart.

hi!! I first off wanted to say THANK YOUU!! I came across your page abt two months ago when I needed new fics and I use your recs so often!! I was wondering, what are a few of your all-time favorite fics, if you had to choose? (:
Oh my goodness! I'm so glad to hear that you've been enjoying my blog! I can't believe I've been running this blog for 3 years today!
What a fun ask (I've been sitting on this so I could use it for today!) I really struggled to pick fics - or more accurately, not to pick ALL the fics! I picked fics that are my go to rereads - whether it's because they make me laugh or because they pull at my heartstrings, or because they're so hot, these are some of my personal favorites.
Cupboard Love by @shealwaysreads (4,184 words, rated G)
Cupboard Love: the psychoanalytic theory of an infant’s primary drive being food which, when satisfied, leads naturally to a secondary drive for attachment.
Harry’s life, and love, in food.
Still Warm, Still Warm by @tsauergrass (4,899 words, rated G)
Harry is up to something. Why else would he keep giving Draco presents?
Five Little Things by @bixgirl1 (6,197 words, rated T)
Harry was supposed to be good at this.
Headway by orphan_account (7,482 words, rated M)
“It’s called courting,” Draco spat suddenly, livid and red in the face. “I wouldn’t expect you to understand a single thing about it, actually Potter, since it’s formal, and there are rules, and neither of those are concepts you’d know anything about even if they took on human form and kicked you right in the fucking dick.”
The Exhale by spqr (7,506 words, rated T)
Hermione makes a soft, concerned sound. "Harry, look at this." She shows him an article with a photo, but the photo's not moving; it must be a Muggle newspaper. "NASA have just landed a rover on Mars. It's called Curiosity, and look, this is so--I don't know if it's sweet or sad, but--it's all alone out there, and they programmed it to sing itself Happy Birthday."
Nothing is wrong, but Harry starts crying.
Silverpoint by @tackytigerfic (8,836 words, rated E)
It seems fairly simple to you, but you know that you don't really understand love - how could you, after all? You've never known how to talk about it, but you've never had to before. Everyone you ended up loving has always understood. You've been able to show them, by fighting for them, dying for them.
That seems a bit much- after all, Malfoy just wants tea in bed and his cock in your mouth (not usually at the same time).
It's ok to love him, you reason with yourself - he doesn't have to know. No one ever has to know.
Quick as a Flash of Lightning, Unhurried as Eternity by @onbeinganangel and @babooshkart (10,000 words, rated E)
Can you fall in love with someone by simply watching them fiercely love another version of yourself?
The Way These Days Seem to Go (And Go) by @firethesound (15,230 words, rated T)
Stress baking isn’t a hobby Harry ever thought he’d pick up, but he’s surprised to find how much it helps him to get through those long months post-war. It keeps his hands busy, it keeps his mind occupied, and when Draco Malfoy steadily pushes his way back into Harry's life, it helps with that too.
Let him lead me to the banquet by @harryromper (16,066 words, rated T)
The worst part is Harry’s got no idea why Malfoy keeps sending him invites. He’s never replied to a single one. And if the whole dinner is as exclusive and sought-after as the Prophet keeps breathlessly reporting, then presumably the only reason Malfoy wants him there is in his capacity as the Chosen One. So, really, he can fuck right off. Harry doesn’t care about Draco Malfoy’s redemption tour. And he’s certainly not going to help him with it.
Draco Malfoy Absolutely Does Not Need to Be Loved by Harry Bloody Potter by @nv-md (18,153 words, rated E)
It’s not easy to be bonded to your childhood rival, turned fuckbuddy, who you also have extremely uncomfortable but repressed feelings for—just ask Draco Malfoy.
When You Kiss Me (What A Lovely Way to Burn) by @femmequixotic (22,167 words, rated E)
A drag fairytale of New York in which Draco wears red lipstick and Potter can’t get enough.
In the dark, the light by phrynne (32,203 words, rated E)
‘Potter… It’s Malfoy. Do you still want this?’ It started like that. Malfoy’s breath on his ear, his voice low, hot against his skin. Harry shivered, though he could feel the heat from Malfoy’s body just behind him, too close, but not touching him. Even if he could. For the rest of the night, he could do whatever the hell he wanted with Harry.
Clouds That Veil the Midnight Moon by @drarrytrash (36,733 words, rated E)
According to Harry’s personal narrative regarding the incident, he’d hooked up with Draco Malfoy for purely self-destructive reasons, or out of convenience, or by some unlucky accident. Looking at him, sprawled in the moonlight, Harry is devastated to recall that he’d hooked up with Draco Malfoy because he’s hot.
Draco is a secret werewolf and Harry is doing his best and they've got criminals to catch, darn it.
Boiling Point by @goldentruth813 (42,882 words, rated M)
After an Auror raid gone wrong, Draco ends up trapped in a dodgy safehouse with nothing but Harry Potter’s dubious company and a dwindling supply of food. With only each other and the walls surrounding them, they're forced to confront their past and their feelings which have long been threatening to boil over.
The Liars Department by @dorthyanndrarry (103,395 words, rated T)
This is a story about Harry meeting up with Draco Malfoy four years after the war. And a story about Harry, well, not hating his job per say, but it's not like he has much to compare it to and it seemed fine. His whole life seemed fine. Then Malfoy came along with and his flashy suits and fast car making everything seem dull in comparison, and Harry... Harry couldn't just leave well enough alone.
Grounds for Divorce by @tepre (122,217 words, rated E)
Malfoy finds a coin. Harry finds a letter.
A story about histories, a story about families. A story about a lemon tree somewhere in Upper Egypt.
What We Pretend We Can't See by @gyzym (131,086 words, rated M)
Seven years out from the war, Harry learns the hard truth of old history: it’s never quite as far behind you as you thought.
❤️ As always, if you find a fic you enjoy, please remember to leave the author a kudos or a comment! ❤️
Love forever,
The Drarry Librarian

Humans are terrifying
Recently (like today, a couple hours ago) I came across this whole "humans are weird" and "humans are space orcs" trend and I have been furiously reading every post I come across. The subject, besides enormously entertaining, feels like a collective sociology debate or something where we describe, using aliens as some sort of audience, the most diverse aspects of human nature. Like some metaphor we're using just to enjoy what we like about ourselves as species.
And, honestly, most of these post are wholesome, cute or even funny but for some reason I feel drown towards the ones that explore the darkest and more gruesome aspects of human, as species. Now bear with me because English isn't my first language but hear me out:
Humans as apex predators. Aggressive humans. The liars, the vicious, the wreckless... It probably goes on and on, since I know for sure I have only touched the tip of the iceberg in my reading.
So, what I'm trying to say it's that sure, it's cute to get along with other species and ride their ships and impress them with our special talents and "properties". But what if we didn't?
What if aliens were afraid of us? What if protocols aren't such a thing after some centuries and there were all kinds of roge, pirate-like, human vessels and colonies around? What if we murder, hunted, ate, assaulted and cheated?
Imagine the horror in the souls of the soft, pacific aliens who are accustomed to their ancient ways of sharing, caring, and respecting, when they suddenly find themselves dealing with a new species that is as unpredictable as it is dangerous. Picture humans hunting a specific kind of alien because their meat is said to taste like some sort of addictive delicacy or because they have horns or nails made out of certain material that sells extremely well in the black market? Imagine humans flirting their way into power only to betray those who entrusted them with everything. I'm pretty sure apex predators can do that and more. The actors. The ones who can laugh at a Roomba with a knife taped to it as if it isn't something a little disturbing to begin with.
They can do horrors. They live in horror.
And aliens pray every day to not find those humans.
Because they all look alike. When and alien meets them they all smile and pat each other. They all ask questions out of juvenile curiosity and offer what they have, no matter how little. But they all can also have scars and sinful grins. They all can stab you in the back. And if you happen to meet the ones who will, you know is gonna be hard to scape. Because humans are some sort of fucking Land Rover-like beasts, specially on their adrenaline fueled moments. How can you avoid becoming the next barbeque? I don't know.
What about serial killers? Sociopaths? Psychopaths? There are a whole lot of new species to mess with. Imagine a narcissist gaslighting the hell out of some naive alien who wouldn’t understand why and how they are being mistreated, yet remains infatuated nonetheless. Dead bodies appearing on the ship in gruesome ways, as if someone were playing with their anatomy, portraying the dead aliens as some sort of spectacle, as if they were trying to say: "Look at what I did, this horrible, horrible thing". Aliens wouldn't understand, nor would they be ready to deal with the absolute disdain humans can sometimes have for life itself.
Even suicide...
I don't know why I find it interesting to think about these kinds of aspects. I'm not precisely enjoying it, but I just find it interesting. It's just some sci-fi headcanon, but still... Humans have so many shades, so much dark in their light. I don't feel the fantasy is complete if I don't consider that as well.

On May 30, NASA’s Curiosity Mars rover, currently exploring Gale Crater on the red planet, drove over a small rock on the Martian surface. The rock cracked open while driving over the rock, revealing its interior composition. Scientists on Curiosity’s team were stunned to find yellow sulfur crystals within the rock — the first time these crystals have been spotted on Mars. What’s more, the rock these crystals were found in is made of elemental, or pure, sulfur, unlike the more common sulfur-based minerals Curiosity has previously detected. Since October 2023, Curiosity has been investigating a region of Gale Crater rich with sulfates, a kind of salt that forms as water evaporates and contains sulfur. Scientists aren’t yet sure if there is a connection between the pure sulfur found in the rock and the sulfur-based rocks that have been found in the past. Sulfur can only form in a very narrow set of conditions. Curiosity’s scientists haven’t associated the region the rover is exploring with these conditions, which is why the team was shocked by sulfur crystals within the rock. This also isn’t the only rock in this region like this — the team has since identified an entire field of similar rocks in the area around the rover. The rock Curiosity drove over and subsequently discovered sulfur crystals within. (Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/MSSS) “Finding a field of stones made of pure sulfur is like finding an oasis in the desert. It shouldn’t be there, so now we have to explain it. Discovering strange and unexpected things is what makes planetary exploration so exciting,” said Ashwin Vasavada, a Curiosity project scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in California. See AlsoCuriosity Mission UpdatesSpace Science CoverageNSF StoreClick here to Join L2 In September 2014, Curiosity began climbing Mount Sharp (also referred to as “Aeolis Mons”), a large 5.5 km tall mountain in the center of Gale Crater. Along its trek up, Curiosity has explored several different regions of the mountain. Its latest stop was at the Gediz Vallis channel — a large groove in the side of Mount Sharp that winds down to the base of the mountain. Each layer of Mount Sharp that Curiosity encounters on its climb represents a different part of Mars’ history. Gediz Vallis is one of the main reasons Curiosity’s science team selected Gale Crater as the rover’s landing location before its launch in 2011. The team believes that the channel was carved out by large and long flows of liquid water and debris. In addition to the channel’s geographical nature, the 3.2 km-long ridge of boulders and sediment that extends down the mountain is evidence for these water flows. When Curiosity arrived at the channel, the team’s main goal was to develop an understanding of how the landscape was carved billions of years ago. Since then, Curiosity has studied whether ancient floods or landslides formed the ridge that rises from the channel’s floor. Curiosity’s findings suggest that both floods and landslides played a role in some way, as some of the sediment and rock piles in the ridge appear to be left by violent flows of water. Other piles appear to be the result of landslides. Panoramic image of the Gediz Vallis channel, taken by Curiosity. (Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/MSSS) To reach these conclusions, the team commands Curiosity to investigate various rocks found within the debris piles, as the shapes and appearance of these rocks help determine their past and origin. For example, rounded stones that look similar to river rocks were likely carried by water flows, whereas angular rocks were likely deposited by dry avalanches. Once all of these rocks settled into their mounds within the ridge, water soaked into all of the material. This water then caused chemical reactions that likely created the sulfur-based and pure sulfur rocks that Curiosity is now discovering. “This was not a quiet period on Mars. There was an exciting amount of activity here. We’re looking at multiple flows down the channel, including energetic floods and boulder-rich flows,” said Planetary Science Institute scientist Becky Williams, who also serves as the deputy principal investigator of Curiosity’s Mastcam instrument. The team’s initial expectations for their findings in the channel were much less complex than expected. The more Curiosity explores, the more complex the region becomes, and the team was eager to drill into of one of the rocks in the channel to better understand its composition and history. On June 18, they got their chance as Curiosity drilled into a large sulfur rock named “Mammoth Lakes” using its drill at the end of its two-meter-long robotic arm. Most sulfur rocks are too small and brittle to be drilled into and sampled, but Mammoth Lakes was an exception. Even with Mammoth Lakes’ large size, though, the team had to search for a part of the rock that would allow for safe drilling and sampling. What’s more, the team had to find a safe spot for Curiosity to park while it drilled, as the surrounding surface was loose and sloping. After drilling into Mammoth Lakes — the 41st time the rover had performed drilling during its mission — the rover poured the now-powdered rock into a set of instruments inside of the rover. Those instruments have since investigated the rock, and teams are now analyzing the data from those instruments to learn more about the rock and its internal composition. After successfully drilling into Mammoth Lakes, Curiosity drove away and is currently exploring other areas of the channel to learn more about its history and what it means for Martian history. (Lead image: Curiosity takes a selfie at the Murray Buttes region of Mount Sharp. I'm rereading The Martian, and in Chapter 15 the narrator lists some (though it's implied not all) previous NASA Mars missions, including "Mariner, Viking, Spirit, Opportunity, and Curiosity". The book was originally published in 2011, a year before Curiosity landed on Mars (though obviously the plan was well known), and including it in the list was a cool and subtle way of reinforcing that the story takes place in the near future.
But obviously Curiosity is now old news, and in 2021 Perseverance became the latest NASA rover to land on Mars. It landed on the opposite side of the planet from where the Martian takes place, so it's presence wouldn't be relevant to Mark's survival, but it's absence from the list in chapter 15 is notable if you are even vaguely aware of current NASA research.
I think it'd be really cool if in future reprintings of the book (I assume it's still in print?) they left everything else the same (because adjusting for every new scientific discovery would be a nightmare), but added Perseverance to that list. idk about anyone else, but that would do wonders for my immersion in the story and make it feel less like a past vision of the future, and more like a still real vision of the future

20th October 2012 saw the twinning ceremony in Glenelg, complete with a live link to NASA, to celebrate the twinning of the village with Glenelg on Mars.
Scotland has a fine history of being the first nation to do this, or the only one to do that, and this story is no different.
The tiny Highland village of Glenelg (Earth) has the distinguished honour of being the only place on Earth to be “twinned” with a namesake on another planet!! It's a strange and unique story that started back in 2011 when NASA launched a rocket to Mars. The mission, to land the car sized rover, “curiosity” on the planet at a landing site named “Bradbury”. From there it would travel to its objective,a featured spot on the red planet they named “Glenelg”. The landing on August 6th, 2012 was like a sci-fi event in itself and eventually “curiosity” set course for Glenelg (Mars) with an estimated arrival date of October 20th, 2012.
To be honest there doesn’t usually need to be a huge reason to celebrate something in Glenelg with a Ceilidh but the then) entrepreneurial Local Development Officer Emma MacLean and a few other likeminded locals saw the opportunity to do more – much, much more!!
There were the normal simple, achievable ideas, then there were the silly ones, “lets get a USA astronaut to come over and open it”, “how about a live link into NASA”, “what about a stack of telescopes” and maybe “getting the Astronomer Royal for Scotland to come”, oh, and “what about a Martian Ceilidh?!!”
And of course they went for the silly ones – and made them happen!! Offices and boardrooms in a small village like Glenelg tend to be, either peoples kitchens or the dining room in the Inn (the preferred venue for meetings as it’s licensed!). Several people quickly lost their cooking space as laptops, printers and phones took over the kitchen worktops. Needless to say in these cases, it’s often a few people that made a lot happen but they were backed up by many more as the local groups within the community clubbed their skills together to produce the Space, Stars and Mars event.Much was done in a few short weeks but a few days before the day, things really took off.
What followed was media coverage, trucks and delivery lorries, TV cameras and interviewers. Last minute panics!! Construction of a 500 seater venue plus other marquees to host the catering, hog roast and Glenelg Geocache registration point. There were also wires, lots and lots of wires. Given that in Glenelg, like so many places in the Highlands, have very poor signal coverage for mobile phones (none at the venue) and the broadband was slooooooooow it was always going to be a challenge. The “Live Link” to Doug McCuistion, the Director of the Mars Exploration Program in NASA was finally, and very tenuously joined by a thin 300 foot cable stretched across the football pitch and childrens play park into the nearest cottage where it was plugged into a BT router – and it worked!!
The Space, Stars and Mars “opening” and Glenelg “twinning” was conducted by Dr. Bonnie Dunbar, Prof John Brown and Emma Maclean cutting the ribbon. For the main event the marquee was full as Prof John Brown, Astronomer Royal for Scotland introduced the talks. The “live link” held as Doug and NASA put on a fascinating presentation of the Mars missions, past, present and future, and included mock up photos comparing Glenelg (Earth) with Glenelg (Mars). At the end, the audience, including many of the local primary school children fired questions at Doug which he enthusiastically answered before the link was eventually closed and the floor passed over to Dr Bonnie Dunbar, a veteran astronaut of 5 shuttle flights accumulating in over 50 days in space. She gave an enthralling story of her life and how she became an astronaut and also her views on how space travel and exploration will evolve in the future. Finally a stunning sign was unveiled by Bonnie Dunbar and John Brown “Honoring the historic journey of NASA’S Rover ‘Curiosity’ to Glenelg, Mars”.
All in all the Space, Stars and Mars event was a great success showing what a group of people in a small village can achieve. And that’s how Glenelg (Earth) became “twinned” with Glenelg (Mars)!
As for the “Martian Ceilidh”, well after all that work you have to let your hair down a bit and needless to say, it was very, very quiet in Glenelg the next day!!
The specially commissioned “Space, Stars and Mars” sign can be seen on the side of the Glenelg Community Hall and the “Twinned with Glenelg (Mars)” road sign can be see when driving into Glenelg
A final poignant mention: 500 “goody” bags were filled with lots of great gifts, one of which was a flash drive which included a recorded message to the people of Glenelg from the late, great Patrick Moore, wishing them all the best for the Space, Stars and Mars day. This is one of the last recordings he made before passing away just a few weeks later.

Did someone leave a communicator badge lying on Mars? NASA's long-running Curiosity rover mission just spotted a familiar shape to "Star Trek" fans: The iconic delta-shaped emblem that Starfleet officers typically wear on their uniforms. Unfortunately, it would be highly illogical to say that a Starfleet landing party walked near Curiosity's roving grounds, as the image was of a mere Mars rock that just so happens to resemble the "Star Trek" symbol.
