Frustrated voters in Oakland, California, chose to oust Mayor Sheng Thao earlier this month, making her the nation's first mayor of major city in more than a decade to get the boot.

In a desperate bid to keep her job, Thao argued that removing her would not only cost the cash-strapped Democratic city millions but also throw it into chaos.

As it turns out, she may be right.

The cost for a special stand-alone election, determined by the Alameda County Registrar of Voters, is about $19 to $21 per voter. There are currently 253,015 registered voters in Oakland, which comes out to a little more than $5 million to hold the election.

The price tag comes as the city has been struggling with high crime rates, increased homelessness, the exodus of beloved sports teams, a sluggish postpandemic recovery, and a widening budget shortfall that is hovering around the $93 million mark.

Thao argued that keeping her at the helm would cause the least disruption. She added that a new mayor would bring in his or her own executive team and that it would take time to get into the groove of the job.

“[There] would be so much turnover when we are already headed on the right track,” she said before the election.

Voters did not agree.

“Our community has endured enough,” Tuan Ngo, founder of #AsiansUnite, said just days before the historic vote. “It’s time for decisive action and leadership that prioritizes the safety and well-being of all Oakland residents.”

Oakland resident Seneca Scott told the Washington Examiner that small businesses have been among the hardest hit.

“The lifeblood of our city is leaking out with no tourniquet,” he said.

Thao will continue to serve as mayor until the Oakland City Council declares the official election results, which are expected on Dec. 5. The city council’s resolution declaring the election results is scheduled for Dec. 17.

Current council president Nikki Fortunato Bas would have become the interim mayor, but she won the election to become an Alameda County supervisor.  That means Dan Kalb, the council president pro tempore, becomes council president until Jan. 6, 2025, when new council members will be sworn in. A special election for mayor must be held within 120 days. Thao, a first-term mayor recalled after only two years on the job, could throw her name back into the ring for mayor in the special election though she has not indicated she will do so.

Thao was elected mayor in November 2022 and became the first Hmong American to lead a major city.

She faced criticism almost immediately after taking office for firing popular Oakland Police Chief LeRonne Armstrong. Adding to her woes was an FBI raid on her home this past summer. The FBI also conducted raids on three properties associated with the politically influential Duong family, who run a curbside recycling center in Oakland through their company, California Waste Solutions.

The Duong family is close with Thao and has donated to her campaign when she was a commissioner and when she ran for mayor. California Waste Solutions has lucrative contracts with the city.

Thao has not been charged with a crime and has insisted she is not the target of the FBI investigation.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported Monday that a federal grand jury is scheduled to hear testimony from witnesses in the federal corruption investigation next month, though it was not clear whether other witnesses had already testified.

Grand juries decide whether prosecutors have enough evidence to bring charges against a person. The proceedings are held behind closed doors. Depending on the outcome, the grand jury will decide whether to hand down an indictment.

One month after the June raids, the FBI issued federal grand jury subpoenas requesting documents related to Thao, boyfriend Andre Jones, the Duongs, the Oakland Army Base, and Evolutionary Homes, a company that sells container homes to local governments as homes for homeless people.

The subpoenas also sought documents related to Mario Juarez, a former city council candidate whom law enforcement officials accused of breaking the law while trying to help Thao win the election.

Calls to Thao for comment were not returned.

try at least a chapter of the million books I take out instead of sending half of them back totally unread

2020 was shaping up to be such a good year for me with books! A third of my total reads were in by early March. But the only reason I’ve read anything since then is because we get to read at work when we’re handling curbside.

Which like... the alternative is staring at the wall so thank u for the forced motivation @work 😘

Most of what I read was forgettable though rip. I think I need to branch out, try a little harder to figure out what I like nowadays and go from there.

The highlights. Us Against You, The Space Between Worlds, Leviathan Wakes, Evvie Drake Starts Over. The week I spent inhaling Shadow & Bone for the first time, rereading SoC, and then topping it all off with King of Scars and The Language of Thorns. The one book a day breeze of finishing The Folk of the Air trilogy. Reading more romance than I have in my life. My temporary fixation on baseball in both fiction and nonfiction that was really just spillover from running out of Pitch fic lmao 

So yeah. Mixed bag, mostly duds. In 2021, I’m hoping for more impactful, memorable reading overall.

Chapter One

Edward flicked through the sheet music in his folder. He was feeling inspired to play something when he got home, but he wasn’t quite sure what. 

He heard a truck pull to a stop at the curbside in front of him and looked up to see his smiling best friend peering at him from inside the mechanical beast. 

“Thanks, Rose,” he said in lieu of a greeting as he clambered in. “My test is next week so fingers crossed I can stop asking for rides.” 

Rose just shook her head. “Assuming you pass your test… or do you think another old lady will jump out in front of the car?” The teasing was evident in her tone. 

“She did!” Edward defended. 

“How’s your mom?” Rose asked as she drove around the block and then towards Edward’s apartment with his mom. 

“She’s acting weird,” Edward told her. “She said she wants to talk to me when I get home.” 

“Do you know what she wants to talk to you about?” 

“No clue.” 

His mother, Esme, who was an artist, had raised Edward. His father had died when his mom was pregnant with him, but his mom was more than enough. Her friend, Carlisle, had also helped raise him. Carlisle was like a father to him. 

“Maybe she’s got a big commission coming up?” 

Edward shrugged his shoulders. “I don’t know. She’s not been painting a lot lately, and that usually means something’s on her mind.” 

“I’m sure it’s nothing serious.” When Rose saw Edward was worrying the edge of his sweater, she leaned across the cab and gently placed her hand on his. “Whatever it is, it’s going to be fine.” 

Edward smiled at this comfort. Rose had been his best friend since childhood. This girl had bullied him for wearing glasses. She’d thrown them off his face and into the dirt, laughing as Edward scrabbled around to find them. Rose had walked over and pushed the girl down, telling her to leave him alone. She’d always looked out for him—even now.

                                                Prologue

Once upon a time vampires were merely legend, but slowly they bred to the point they were noticeable in existence. One of the first to show leadership trying to dominate and create peace was a man named Elijah, but there is always tension between humans who distrust them.

They create ploys and mean spirited scenarios instead of trying to find ways to help the growing population of newly drawn vampires. A human named Samuel started the first civil war to kill the population as they sought no true desires to make them equals.

Elijah would send barters to end the deaths. Samuel stuck on his path of decent to kill the vampires. Their past lives meant nothing to him. They were now monsters.

He would send back boxes of ashes. Elijah would hide away many innocent turned in the action of the battles. Eventually he would meet Samuel on the field himself.

They barely had anything to say. He held deep indoctrinated beliefs that made his blood boil when he and Elijah looked deeply into each other's eyes.

The area was silent. Everyone standing behind them seems to be in suspense, but Elijah would create a deeper chaos by turning his back to Samuel. "If I fight you, I would be no better than this whole war. No Samuel...I will not fight you..."

The war fades in the background of many unknown trivial battles. Elijah never hears from Samuel from that time forward, but vampire clans start to create houses further from civilization. Vampires make deals with witches to create power to head of households. Humans create slayers and fang hunters to challenge their humanity.

Humanity will continue to thrive no matter what vampires, witches or demons throw at them. They have a deepened spirit going back to the ages of the beginning.

Elijah would retire, build a house deep in the woods and adopt many vampires that were coming out of hiding. He would house them, feed them and give them hope.

Elijah and many others would create new philosophies. Clans would make deals with demons and fairies. Clans would create new bonds with other leaders to maintain there would be no fights.

Alex hid in the deepest corners of the basements and attics wasting his days away. He would quietly leave for meals and enter in the house without a sound. Sometimes called the cat of the house, his feet almost never heard on the hardwood floors.

Dawn and Alex often would bond when she could spot him. She could sense a deep loneliness in his soul. A lot of them were from the same place as him.

One day Alex grows tired of the household activities. They become corrupted beyond their means. He leaves without telling Dawn. He faces the sincere feeling for the  release of his life to death.

He would walk through neighborhoods, cities and courtyards searching for meanings. Seeing small children run a long side their mothers. Meaningful kisses on the curbside deep into the night. Parties with heaps of people getting drunk, just spending time to make the days pass: all a barrage of making new memories.

Alex thinks to himself. Are there really such memories for a vampire? He avoids people at some point slowly starving. He stands in front of a small neighborhood staring forward no longer thinking what will happen to him. He thinks the human heart has shriveled for vampire-kind.

He looks around one more time with wishes he never out aged his family and friends, when he ran away when they realized he would never change with them. He would be there hidden when his mother was buried first, then his father and lastly his sister who before she died asked for his presence, but was too scared to come from the nook and crannies to admit to her face his immortality.

He feels now is the time he can truly be with them.
