I was watching a video analysing how the Yiga clan were handled in botw and how the person analysing it lamented the fact that Kohga was a joke character who totally destroyed the much more threatening image the yiga clan had all throughout the game. Although I do understand the sentiment (I felt that way for a long time) I’ve come to realise that we might not be viewing it in the right perspective. I ended up writing a comment under that video explaining how I saw things, and realised that maybe it could interest people here too? So here is the fleshed out version of it:

I think part of why they made Kohga extremely goofy compared to a way less goofy clan of literal assassins is to emphasise how even though the clan originally held some understandable beliefs, it has become a cult of personality over the years, and like most cults, the leader is way less charismatic than his followers make him out to be. Indeed, from the outside, it seems absurd how anyone could take Kohga seriously, let alone kill under his command, but from the inside, Kohga is the Beloved Leader That Guides Them Towards Victory, and anyone threatening him deserves to die.

In a way, yiga clan members feel like vulnerable, impressionable people who were enrolled into a cult and given a Big Family and a purpose (and a lethal weapon) by their lovable Master Kohga who wants the best for them… Except if you want to get out, then you’re a filthy traitor who also deserves to die. It’s especially visible when you beat him and they all get personally mad at you for killing him. They didn’t care about Ganon, they didn’t seem to actually understand the bigger picture, they only cared about Kohga.

It also shows how, like the rest of Hyrule, the Yigas are very much disconnected from their own history, seemingly holding on the grudge their ancestors held more as an excuse to continue to enact violence and perpetuate the cult of personality than fighting for a “noble” cause. Only Kohga seems to actually care about Calamity Ganon, and the rest of the yigas seem to be just tools to him. Wether or not he’s actually conscious of what he’s doing is unclear. Is he a fully aware con artist, or is he purely another product of Yiga indoctrination?

So yeah, to me it feels like a parody/critic/mockery of cult dynamics. It shows that this gang of assassins are indeed a real menace, but for seemingly no reason other than “that one lunatic they admire told them to” and “if they go away they get killed”. The reason why the clan was originally created becomes almost anecdotal. Under the current leader, no one is required to actually know what they’re doing, they just need to follow orders.

In the end, I think it is the intention the developers had because cults are a rampant problem in Japan. At the very least, even if it’s not a actually conscious critic, it’s a concept that is much more present in their cultural landscape than ours and that almost certainly influenced how they handled the Yiga clan. Basically, cults are not cool and can even be dangerous both for the public and their members. Cult leaders especially are not cool and often are con artists. Therefore, Kohga couldn’t be badass, he had to be a doofus getting beaten in the most unexceptional way possible.

For full transparency:

I am not in dire financial straights because of buying the flight tickets. I have done as much as I could to prepare for this flight months in advance, but I am also not exactly in a high paying position to afford this on a regular basis; this did take a healthy chunk of cash, just about $800 for flying alone. I'm not expecting that this sale covers all of it as I am still working my irl job as well (some weeks are better than others). If anything, any commissions that contributes to recouping the tickets will be something I am incredibly grateful for.

I am leaving on September 19th and returning on October 3rd (2 week period). I do have the sale extending just past when I make it home rather than giving such a short deadline before I leave. sorry but do you ever think about the fact that the bernard we have today is a direct amalgamation of everything that happened in his past and i know that sound like such an obvious statement to say but it actually kills me to know that you can draw a direct line from who he is today all the way back to that sixteen year old boy who watched his best friend bleed out. like it is the defining moment in his life. it fundamentally shaped who he is and the person he's become. he is the bernard we know and love not despite the grieves shooting but because of it. because the gangs all got together and shot up his school. because tim walked out of that room with nothing but a baseball bat. because his darla got shot. because he watched her gasp and cry as she died. because he watched the blood coagulate around the wound. because he sat there and held her hand as her life drained out of her. because he walked into school that day with a joke he knew would make her laugh and her nose would scrunch up and she'd snort a little and tim would roll his eyes at him and call him ridiculous and instead he walked out with a bloody white shirt, blood under his fingernails, and two friends less. because, even now, almost half a decade out from the shooting, he thinks that if he closes his eyes, he will always be that stupid, scared little sixteen year old, holding the cooling body of dead best friend.

I'd draw this outfit way more often if the hood didn't hide Link's facial expressions so much. It's really REALLY is my favorite TotK Armor Set! So...GOTH!! Glory to Puppet Zelda!

After the family decided to finally explain the joke about time’s illegitimate child to talon

Talon was so relieved about it that he wasn’t even able to get furious about the situation

Time unfortunately decided to make it worse by saying that the child is actually not Zelda's and that he just took him from someone else

And then leaves with the chain

Talon has an aneurysm about those implications

Because WTF was link doing with an army of other people all named link

Is his in-law a cult leader or something

Those tattoos make much more sense now

The chain only makes it worse by dropping equally deranged comments

Hyrule : if the hero of time hadn’t picked me up from the faith I would have been sacrificed but the leader was so kind to me (Hyrule is just as much of a little shit as the others)

Warriors: he is a great leader I suppose but I fear his power (talking about mask's ability to be a cryptic from the war)

Sky : he is not a bad guy,… I SWEAR ON IT HE ISN’T ( doesn’t sound like it )

Wild : yeah I just woke up and was part of this circle of people who all have the name link

Twilight: he is my spiritual ancestor who has protected my family for generations (yeah definitely lies considering that both are almost the same age)

Four casually : I am a war criminal so it doesn’t matter if I get sacrificed I will be locked up for life anyway (referring to Vio and his whole career as a war criminal)

Wind : He has abandoned me for a while before he finally decided that I am a worthy sacrifice for the shadow

Legend being legend: I am in fact hold hostage and my family is in active danger please get an army to stop this deranged man

This does not make Talon feel anymore better than before

In fact he is now convinced that his in law is actually crazy and a danger to his daughter and the princess isn’t taking him seriously

How do you stop a man off such power and the Queen's word at his call
