"Buena Mulata Pepper" and "Pippin" were handwritten on a baby food jar that a young William Woys Weaver found in the bottom of the deep freezer in his grandmother’s basement, a decade after his plant-loving grandfather’s untimely death. If you’ve heard of the Fish Pepper, this story probably sounds familiar. There were many important and beautiful varieties of seeds in that lucky freezer, and many that passed from Philly- and Baltimore-based Black caterers' hands to now-famed painter Horace Pippin, including this purple-to-red cayenne type Buena Mulata. Seeds stay viable longer in the freezer; our heirlooms only survive if someone finds them in storage and places them in soil; and stories only live when they are told. I'm bringing these to Portland, OR to be included in a dish created by Sam Smith of @tuskpdx that will highlight the Fagiolina del Trasimeno at the @culinarybreedingnetwork Variety Showcase on Monday night. #buenamulata #cayenne #capsicumannuum #williamwoysweaver #roughwoodseedcollection #seedsaving #seedkeeping #seedstories #horacepippin #buenamulatapepper #culinarybreedingnetwork (at The Nines, A Luxury Collection Hotel, Portland, OR)

Some awesome seed pack illustration for @hudsonvalleyseedco by Crush artist @mwashburnart ! . . . #Repost @hudsonvalleyseedco with @get_repost ・・・ A few years ago, there were only a few pounds of Hank's X-tra Special Baking Bean in existence. A creamy legume selected and beloved by Hank Lotvin, a gardener in Ghent, NY, the bean was rediscovered by his daughter and has now made a grand comeback. It's all thanks to a unique collaboration across the Hudson Valley, one that bought together @glynwoodorg , us and @seedshed , and Hudson Valley chefs and farmers. The result is a program called Kitchen Cultivars, which uses the power of local cuisine to ensure the existence of regionally selected seed varieties. Thanks to Glynwood, Hank's Bean is now once again part of Hudson Valley agriculture and is on the Slow Food Ark of Taste. . . Interested in learning more about this variety and others like it? Head to the Variety Showcase in NYC tomorrow hosted by @culinarybreedingnetwork and @grownyc. Tickets at: https://ift.tt/2MY1SpA . . The seed to table relationship of Hank's Baking Bean is beautifully rendered by @mwashburnart an illustrator who draws inspiration from the natural world. ➡️ See more in the Link in our Bio. . . @slowfoodhudsonvalley @slowfoodnyc #artpack5 #artpackjourney #arkoftaste #kitchencultivars #hudsonvalleyseedco #organicbeanseeds #organicseeds #seedsaving #seedpack #artpack #seedart #artpower #gardenart #whyart #articulture #artofseed #bakingbean #bean #garden #gardenart #homegarden #artist #illustrator https://ift.tt/2pvRv2K

Truelove Seeds all-star Amirah Mitchell gave a beautiful talk today for Collards Week titled Seedkeeping and Cultural Identity. It is available now on YouTube via the link in @culinarybreedingnetwork ‘s Instagram bio. After some storytelling about her own family’s relationship to this plant that tastes of home for African Americans who descend from formerly enslaved people in the South, she goes into depth on growing and keeping seeds of this beloved crop. In this photo from our farm last year, she holds her favorite variety: Green Glaze Collards, which she has in the ground for our catalog next year. Go check out her talk, as well as collard talks from our faves @thecookinggene and @ira.wallace. #seedkeeping https://www.instagram.com/p/CI3xFamAOML/?igshid=1jmp1tu55oqcq

A bouquet of dahlias I’ve “bred” aka planted from true seed, except a few, including the lilac-colored one in the center, which is a mother to several of them. Also featured are several crops I grow and love: amaranth, papalo, huacatay, passionvine, celosia, perilla, water spinach, Aztec sweet herb (the last two aren’t really visible from this angle). All of this in a vase from @claykitchenstudio, arranged for our @culinarybreedingnetwork table at tomorrow’s Variety Showcase in Union Square, Manhattan. It was a huge honor to be invited by Lane Selman and the @culinarybreedingnetwork to give a keynote and feature some of my favorite seed varieties at the 2017 Variety Showcase last night in Portland, Oregon. It was surreal, heavy, and challenging as I received devastating news about the death of a beloved young family member a few hours before the event. I tried to stay present and inspiring for my talk in front of 500 guests. I focused on having gratitude for 10,000 years of farmers for selecting and shaping our food; on the importance of knowing and telling your own stories through keeping and sharing ancestral seed varieties; how that can slow the erosion of the world's seed biodiversity, disrupt the cultural loss associated with assimilation, and for "white" folks how that can even help dismantle the myth of whiteness; on how seed keeping is a deep and integral part of food sovereignty and food justice work; on how amazing it is that we and our seeds have made it to the future despite the violence of the human world, the green revolution, the consolidation of the seed industry, and the changing climate. When we hold onto our seeds, we hold onto our stories, and we hold onto our freedom. First photo by @sarahminnick_ Second photo by @erc.bdz. This third photo shows my seed friends and heroes @rowenwhite and Kristyn Leach of @namu_farm. We try to talk once a month about our seed keeping work in our respective communities and seeing them in person was a real highlight. Next is a poorly lit photo of a deliciously simple dish made by the lovely and talented Sam Smith of @tuskpdx including the creamy, diminutive, endangered, and protected Fagiolina del Trasimeno black eyed peas of Umbria, Italy, and also fresh purple, orange, and red Buena Mulata cayenne peppers, lightly roasted Hill Country Red Okra, and pickled green Mikado Tomatoes. Next: me and chef Sam Smith; Kristyn's "Better Chamoe Melon"; Rowen's corn display; and finally a couple shots from the dinner at the Side Yard Farm the night before.

I can't tell you how exited I am to be collaborating with Kristyn Leach of Namu Farm (Sunol, California) in several ways this year! Please see her post about the Chamoe melon from her birthplace, which is also a place where melon farmers are resisting the placement of a Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense battery on their soil. #Repost @namu_farm ・・・ Two varieties of landrace Korean melons. Chamoe is a beloved summertime treat, and we are particularly partial to the heirloom classic variety we have on the farm. Less sweet than modern hybrid cultivars, but with a refreshing flavor and texture. These varieties are geared towards natural farming methods, and small scale production schedules. Their long harvest window provides moderate quantities of fruit for several weeks, reducing the number of successions needed to provide a steady supply of melons all summer long. We are showcasing this melon this year and will be releasing seeds through @seedkeeping. It's particularly significant to honor the chamoe right now, as melon farmers in Sosongri are on the front lines combating the US THAAD installation in their region. This area of Gyeonsangbuk-do is the center of chamoe production and also happens to be where I was born. You can eat both types of melons @namusf. We also will feature some samples this Saturday with @peopleskitchencollective at their "To the Kitchen" remedy stand in Oakland @alenamuseum. And this October @chef_dlee and I are heading to the @culinarybreedingnetwork Variety Showcase in Portland where we will share information and Dennis will be preparing some amazing bites of food to show off the flavors of chamoe. For updates about the ongoing struggle against THAAD and the continued military escalation in Korea check out Zoom in Korea website.

This is a curiously beautiful red sweet corn 🌽 that we received seed from Munk Berlin called Soltera Morada. It's parentage was bred by Dr. Alan Kapuler and includes double Red and Martian Red.
