headcanon with evidence: shelagh turner is autistic/neurodivergent!

intense interests: shelagh's special interest is obviously the science of midwifery. she's only 30 years old at the beginning of the series, but already her expertise is virtually on par with the older nuns. her deep knowledge is very well respected by her patients and colleagues. she also LOVES to talk about it, you can see her face light up every time she has a chance.

hyperfocus: when shelagh is completely absorbed in a task, she struggles to notice anything else around her. for example, in the very first episode, she doesn't even notice jenny is in the room when she comes to inform sister julienne about her latest delivery. when sister julienne introduces her to jenny, she only very briefly acknowledges her, and then goes back to talking about work, which ties into -

struggling with social cues: in scenes with lots of shelagh dialogue, notice how she struggles to make prolonged eye contact. a notable exception is sister julienne and, later, patrick, but this makes sense. a lot of autistic people struggle to make eye contact generally, but have a few "safe people" with whom it's a lot easier. shelagh also struggles with boundaries, indicated by her lack of ability to ask for help when she needs it or say no when she's asked to do something. she can also be very blunt and forthright about her opinions, such as when she tells jenny to "please stop wittering on about vegetables, i could not care less." she wasn't trying to be rude, she was just indicating her disinterest in the subject in a very to-the-point way. also, when she was infodumping about the bri-nylon nightie, and CLEARLY misunderstanding cues that patrick thought she was extremely sexy in that little get-up 😳😏

stimming: shelagh is CONSTANTLY stimming. most notable are her hand movements, she fidgets with her hands a lot, and when she sits at a table, she often keeps her hands below the surface. i believe this is so she can subtly stim without attracting attention. oh, and you know the autistic stereotype of velociraptor arms? well, i give you...

masking: she's a social chameleon. her speech mannerisms were much more formal and clipped while she was still in the religious life, because she was holding herself to a certain standard, even though it's not necessarily required (look at sister evangelina). i think she was trying to model her behaviour and mannerisms on sister julienne, which is SO COMMON for autistic women to copy the behaviour of someone they admire in order to blend. she also "mirrors" body language, seen here. (both have their hands in their pockets, their legs are the same width apart. also peep my babygirl not making eye contact AGAIN while he's directly looking at her face!)

exaggerated facial expressions and emotive tone of voice: it's a common misconception that autistic people always have monotonous voices and flat facial affect. some do, but just as many are the complete opposite and actually have really varied expressions and tones. ctm fans who don't like shelagh tend to point this fact out about her, but to me it just makes her relatable, because i'm a really emotive autistic person too!

also, this is just anecdotal, but all of my autistic friends who watch ctm agree with me that shelagh is most likely autistic. and we're really good at identifying autistic traits in others.

these are just my observations from watching the show, as an autistic person. if you don't share these views, that's fine! but please be mindful of what you say if you aren't neurodivergent ♡

hermit horror week day 5: season 1 or 2 or echoes

It's a nice gesture.

Joe finishes the monument, steps back, and looks at it. He removes one of the pieces required to finish it. He steps back. He looks at it.

It's a nice gesture. There's, like, blood on his hands, and every one of his scars aches, but it's a nice gesture, you know?

"It's not his fault it's havin' the opposite effect," Joe mutters to himself. He removes a piece of the monument. He puts it back. He remains standing in front of the thing GenerikB built for him, and he remains on Hermitcraft, and no new knowledge of how to leave again has come to his mind.

It's a nice gesture, it really, really is. Joe's, uh, not used to parts like this anymore. He doesn't get much a chance to show his hospitality. Talking to people, it's--new! It's new. It's fun, too, to do things like prank folks, and meet new folks, and build things for the sake of building them, and everything else. He's not mad he escaped to this Hermitcraft place, really, he's not. It's a nice place to be.

Joe walks in a circle around the monument.

It's a really nice gesture. The man who owns this place, he knows where Joe's from. Knows the sorts of things Joe is used to doing. Went about building a monument, so Joe would have something to do. In return, Joe's thinking he's going to break into the man's impenetrable base, just to show him that it's not so impenetrable when you're used to dying, and dying, and dying, and dying, and dying, and...

So the thing is, two weeks after arriving, now, he doesn't want to admit it. Everyone's hospitality, it had been grand. Far better than he'd gotten before. There hadn't even been any arenas he was expected to kill people in for their amusement! If he ever got the chance, he'd rate them five stars. Not a death trap, no vindictive gods, no way out.

Okay.

He pulls a block off the monument and puts it back. He waits for the capricious god of this world to show him the exit.

So the thing is, two weeks after arriving, he got a bit of cold feet. Not anyone's fault, really. He's just, like. Okay, he does talk to people. Cleo, Cleo he keeps in contact. Good friend of his, Cleo. Doesn't have any hard feelings about the murder. Makes sense, given that she's neck-deep in everything too. Used to the kinds of people they are. Is he making sense? They're--used to it. It's easy with her. She knows not to question how a man who likes building houses out of sand and gravel to show off how precarious they are ended up with scars. She was there. Not, like, with him, but--

Anyway. The problem is that the people here are... nice. Nicer than he knows how to deal with.

The problem is that he can't leave.

He's tried to figure it out. He thinks, like, the server's a Chinese finger trap, maybe? The more you try to get out, the more stuck you get. That doesn't make sense, because he can see the writing on the wall, and he's not the only one who wants to try to leave. He thinks the one who made this place is leaving here soon, too.

That's why he's back here, because--like, at the time, it had probably been good he didn't leave. If he'd left, he'd never have jumped on that box, or made the friends he's made, or built a piston door, or even gotten anywhere close to reaching Hypno's house with his railway. (One of these days, he'll make it.) He wouldn't have proven to himself, hey, he can build, too, and make jokes, and be the odd one out. He's good with those things. So he'd thought that someone was looking out for him, not letting him leave, and hey, nothing had ever managed to trap Joe forever.

He's way too good at dying for anything to trap him forever. He's, like, got a song about it and everything? Man, and they'd laughed when he'd sung it to them, too, but then again, that's just that he's bad at singing, and GenerikB is leaving.

He removes a piece from the monument. He puts it back. He circles the structure.

It's a nice gesture. It was a nice gesture when he joined, and it's a nice gesture now. Little taste of the constant death labyrinth he hailed from, you know? Little taste of--here, here's that goal you're used to. It's cute. It's cute.

So, like, he's completed the monument, though. He's done it.

And he's still--here. He can't leave.

And he's, uh. Not really certain what happens to a world, when its god abandons it, but by god, or maybe Vechs, or certainly GenerikB, that god is leaving it.

And Joe--

The thing is, this time when he gets cold feet, it's not just going to be him trapped.

And he'll find his way out. He always does.

It's just--

Two weeks after joining, he'd gotten cold feet. Cleo, she understands. She's used to what happens when people are cruel. People who are used to that--she'd probably laugh if he told her he'd gone and gotten trapped because he got attached to things, like any stray creeper couldn't take them.

But here he is. And here they are.

The monument doesn't let him out, and its god is abandoning them all.

He doesn't know how to get anyone out but himself.

He pulls a block. He replaces it.

He doesn't know where to start looking, except that it will be very painful, because it always is, and he will not stop until it's done, because he never does.

I can't believe they did that episode where Delia asks Patsy to go to a lesbian bar with her because "there will be women like us" and Patsy responds with "i don't want to be with women like us, i want to be with you", and she doesn't seem willing to discuss it any further

But in that episode Patsy treats a woman called Daisy who lives on a boat with her family, and when Daisy starts giving birth and Patsy can't get to her right away, the other women who live on boats with their families do what they can to help Daisy. And they tell her that it doesn't matter that they haven't met her before, they know what her life is like so they know her and they are already friends. Then later, when Daisy holds her baby, she asks Patsy to not cut the umbilical cord right away, because "there are worse things than to be a part of something bigger, even for just a little while"

So when the episode ends, Patsy and Delia enter the lesbian bar, clasp hands and dance together

Okay I know Chess The Musical is a pretty niche fandom so for those who don't know it, a little bit of relevant general background: with theater obviously often things can change from production to production, but some of the major different versions of Chess have famously been DRAMATICALLY different from each other, meaning it's a show where *all* the characters are very, very prime for interpretation and re-interpretation. But with Freddie in particular, its a pretty common fan interpretation that he's a closeted gay man.

Some individual productions can play this up but I don't think any of the major "official" ones have ever pushed it to the point of being "canon"/anything beyond ambiguous.

There's a couple reasons why some people interpret him this way/would choose to play him this way: he's prickly and aggressive in a way that can be read as overcompensation, but also more specifically his big solo has him talking about his troubled childhood and abandonment issues including his father abandoning his family and that his father thought he was "probably queer", and in the concept album version of the show (though this line has been changed in most(?) subsequent versions) someone else outright calls him a fruit (the line specifically is: "through the elegant yelling of this compelling dispute comes the ghastly suspicion my opposition's [Freddie] a fruit").

writing something related to the CCC in the previous post made me wanna expand a bit on how the faction contain chaos outside their base vs when it happened IN their base (relating to my sticksona's ruckus incident)

we know that when chaos happened way outside their base/near their mobile unit (from StD and CtM), they see readings of it and react to it, and kinda just pressed a button to deal with it and doesnt care much about the consequences, no CCC workers will be harmed, presumably

but in ItA, when the Toppat and Government raid happened too close to them, it overwhelmed them, leading to an evacuation and an experienced director to deal with the chaos. (minor shoutout from FtC where Kyle is just curl into a ball)

so i honestly wonder if, just what if, chaos happened right inside their base, how would they react?

in CCC!Mai's ruckus incident, i made the faction react 'normally', as in actually want to contain chaos by finding the root cause since its right in front of them, maybe they have chaotic options but subduing the cause is possibly the best decision to them at the moment, the base was definitely being evacuated while the experienced tried to stop her

looking back to ItA, the cause is right in front of them too, but the more chaotic options are considered fails (i guess its moreso that Henry is there and it killed him), while the prototype option looks like a heads-on approach to neutralize the chaos

i gotta be honest, the whole 'playing it straight' method is more of wanting to subvert the CCC, but the more i think of it, the CCC would actually do it, right?

Compilation of disorganized facts (and derived headcanons) about The Henry Stickmin Collection's "narrator"

First thing’s first, since I typed more than I should’ve for a single bullet point.

Who is this “narrator” anyways?

In this post I’m talking about the implied source of the fail screens, bios, and certain other interactions in the game (which I’ll get into as we go. It’s implied that this character is the same across these different sources of meta interactions.

It is possible that this character is a self-insert of PuffballsUnited, but for the sake of this post we'll assume that this isn't Actually Puff. I feel weird tying my blorbo detail-plucking thoughts to an actual person and don’t want anyone making assumptions about Puff based on anything listed here, plus certain things may be added, exaggerated, omitted, etc. to the character for comedic effect in a way that further delineates the two. (tl;dr narrator ≠ author)

The wiki (derogatory) notes a theory that this character could be Wilson Stone. Granted, it’s not an entirely groundless theory: there is no message on the fail screen for D.E.B., which could be seen as a result of Wilson dying. I disagree with this for a couple of reasons: Wilson is referred to in the third person in his bio, the narrator makes a disdainful comment about the CCC having a surplus of nukes in CtM (there’s little reason for Wilson to be opposed to nukes but not a dark energy bomb), and Wilson’s voice is different from the narrator’s (I’ll get to that later).

The general fandom consensus that I've seen uses "the narrator", but this character/being/whatever isn't known by any name officially, nor any pronouns. For simplicity's sake, I'll refer to this character as "the meta" or “the meta voice” and use they/them and it/its interchangeably for them (partly to distinguish from the large surplus of male characters). I prefer “meta” over “narrator” and “commentator” because it doesn’t really narrate anything, it gives more than just commentary, and just because it rolls off the tongue better.

More on the meta

It comments frequently on Henry’s stupidity, but it’s hard to truly baffle them. Not that Henry hasn’t managed to before in fails such as Cheese and Distract.

Getting the obvious out of the way, they’re known to crack jokes of all sorts, including memes, wordplay, references, & callbacks.

Lots of these jokes are at the expense of Henry, the player, or someone else. It frequently makes disparaging comments about the player or Henry in general; more common jabs include fatphobic comments toward Henry or making fun of the player’s poor skill.

Speaking of Henry and the player, it typically uses “you” for both you (the player) and Henry himself, but it does also differentiate between us and Henry, such as in the Duplicatorange fail and Toppy fails, even noting you to not be a stick figure

Not only are they aware of the player and Henry as separate, but they’re also aware that you’re playing a game.

The meta seems to have the most control over the timeline, including what counts as a “fail” and when a fail cuts off, as shown in the duplicatorange and invisibility pill fails.

It has a certain amount of control over the nature of the game itself. The slingshot fail in FtC has them creating various popups that the player must click through to get an achievement. This power isn’t limitless though: the CorrupTick fail in particular shows that things can fall out of their control.

They’re capable of summoning objects (this is implied in Dance Off v4 and outright confirmed in the Lockpick fail).

The free transform option also shows that it has the ability to directly alter people in-universe. The mind control fail implies that it may also be able to outright control people to an extent, but finds this difficult and thus avoids doing so.

They seem to exist in a flux state between being “the game master” and simply being a bystander. It knows at least a little bit about nearly every character in the game and has some control over the environment, but it also reacts to events as though it’s just a spectator and seeing things for the first time.

On a related note, they seem to be in a state between being “in” the game and existing outside of it. Things that would wipe out everyone in the vicinity have no effect on it, but things that alter things on a meta level (such as the corrupted disk, Goodball, and CorrupTick fails) do affect them in various ways.

They aren’t omniscient. They have info on nearly everyone, but they don’t know everything. A lot of their comments in fails seem to be guesswork, and their bios for some people, notably Ellie, are very lacking.

It can feel pain. They complain about their ears hurting from the high pitched sound of the sonic pulse. At the same time, it isn’t nearly as sensitive as Henry or other stick figures and can survive the subsonic wave with little consequence.

It can, supposedly, use the bathroom.

The duplicatorange and invisibility pill both imply that the meta voice has some sentimental attachment to Henry, triggering a fail screen whenever they lose track of Henry.

Related to the above, it seems to have a vested interest in keeping Henry alive, despite having killed Henry themself. Revenged is notable as an ending for the fact that Henry dies in every outcome, and The Betrayed isn’t much better in this regard.

It also shows mild concern for Henry’s wellbeing in RPE/RBH, asking him if his head is okay.

While it’s unknown if they know all languages, they do at least seem to know German, specifically commenting on Friedrich Spielen’s nonsensical German.

They can sleep and even dream; in the G-inverter fail they comment that they “had a nightmare like this”. It’s unknown whether they need sleep or if sleep is simply recreational for them.

I don’t know if the above indicates that they used to be affected by gravity or if they simply had a dream about being affected by gravity, but given their ability to simply hover at a point in the air or even outer space, they probably aren’t affected by gravity at any point that we know them.

The meta is aware of other timelines, making a reference to Charles during the helicopter fail in Toppat King.

While it doesn’t have a known physical appearance, it does occasionally emote with hand-drawn “emoticons”, some of which are even animated.

On rare occasions, it can conjure Twitch emotes or even a full animation of a stick figure.

Alright, get ready. I'm about to say something controversial.

I don't like depictions of Cube with their claws/ other industrial objects pre-Corruption.

LET ME EXPLAIN.

It's probably a headcanon thing I picked up, but I believe that, after Cube was Corrupted, different industrial equipment (saws, claws, gears, etc) kinda fused with their body. Maybe because I love the implied body horror this generates.

But the afromented depictions often just have them... as like a power or extension? If this is a robotic depiction of them, that would make sense, but having them on a normal/ canon divergent version makes it feel... strange?

I feel like it takes away the rawness of the CTM bossfight. The rawness of fighting your best friend after they've been Corrupted and mutated beyond belief, while they're trying to fight back and in extreme pain from all the things that just suddenly fused to them.

If you just imply that they've had these claws/ saws from the beginning, it... kinda ruins that appeal. Not fully, but at least one of the defining aspects of the fight.

Then again, this is a game about shapes and beats, so who am I to complain?

Round 1 Poll 71: What's canon

Gravity Falls submission:

Enforcing Ford(and by proxy- Stan)'s eye color. Did the creator (outside of any sort of canon material) say that Stan specifically had brown eyes (and also phrased in a way where you could interpret it as only one eye being brown)? Yes. However, I have an argument for this one! Alex Hirsch has said lots of things in the past (again, outside of any canon material) that most people just take to not be canon. So why is this specific one the exception? Why are people wrong if they decided to headcanon other eye colors for the characters? My issue here isn't headcanoning the characters as having brown eyes. You are fully allowed to do that- there's no problems with that. My issue is when people start telling everyone that this (despite appearing nowhere in canon) is what you have to abide by and that any headcanons for other eye colors are just wrong. I think if we're allowed to treat other things he says as non-canon, then we should be allowed to do the same when he starts talking about eye colors. No one is correct and no one is wrong. Let people have fun with their eye color headcanons.

the age old question...so kaia @kaiminluu headcanons ctm happening in the early 90s and i headcanon it in the late 90s/early 2000s! we decided to do the 90s for Reasons, so any songs you see will have been released before 2000 :)

Ok now onto the usual "Simp Anon's Spice"

Not only does he have stamina, Tact!Donnie would definitely have the strength of a ninja and a super soldier because come on, it's Donnie! He threw a weight like a frisbee and the person he took it from fell over.

Now anyways, I got slightly off track-

If he ever feels BwB {hehe bewb} is getting a bit too bratty or something, I feel like he would just lift them up and drop them down along with his rhythm to get to them even harder, basically shutting them up from their brattiness. Especially if he speeds up. He would even probably have the BwB turned facing him so he can see the smug, bratty look on their face just change as he ramps everything up from like a 5 to 10000. Probably with a killer, smug smirk too. {I mean killer for me I love when hot dudes smirk-}

HEADCANON. Since they dye / died Stephen’s hair for CTM, and because my psd isn’t helping on my edits and icons, I feel like I have to state that Ed’s hair IS going grey / white. Ed isn’t vain enough to dye it, and he will just accept it – only commenting that at least he kept the dark hair for longer than his younger sister Ruth! The grey hair is also due to the stress in his job, and there is a big increase of grey hairs between pre-Flux times and post-Flux times, which also has to do with the stress during the four years.

So I made a cybernetic design for Terrence

I’m back! I know it’s been a while, and I actually no longer have access to my electronic drawing software, so expect mostly hand-drawn stuff for now. I’ve wanted to create a cybernetic design for Terrence Suave, and I finally pulled the trigger and did it. I hope you enjoy!

So my idea for this is that Terrence was revived relatively shortly after his death, when cybernetic technology was still pretty basic. I did my best to make this design look like an amalgamation of styles, what with the screen on the right and the laser eye on the left. I headcanon that Terrence was overthrown in Reginald’s signature style: literally being dropped off whatever base was in use during his leadership. My thoughts behind that was that his head probably would not have all that much physical damage since the rest of his body took the brunt of it, but his brain would be in bad shape and need to be repaired with cybernetics, hence the fairly extensive augmentations.

We have evidence that Terrence is vain (see his portrait from CTM, where he’s holding the gold-plated gun) which is why I opted to go for gold plating on the supports for his laser eye.

The most fun part of this design, that honestly I couldn’t figure out how to draw, is the idea that his mouth is a literal zipper. Short of having to reach up to open it, it functions the same way. I liked the idea that the top and bottom would look like one piece until they separated. Plus the idea of having literal metal teeth felt like it fit him.

The Doonnarh time travel technology; first draft; wip

I haven't come up with all the aspects of the type of time travel the Doonnarh engage in, but I had this idea that their technology works on the principles closer to that of H.G. Wells (gosh, I love the classics I'm sorry);

In this case the user is enveloped in a sort of a bubble, I'm thinking tachyon particle bubble? That "speeds up" and isolates the user out of their current state of existence, allowing to then "fast forward or reverse" time. And this is why I think this suits me very well narratively. The concept of a temporal bubble is a way to explore time travel without directly influencing the timeline.

I default Helena to a ToS-like timeline. At least, I'd like to think that most of those events are canon to her, then I can also tailor and choose, which events are applicable, depending on my desire. Whenever she travels to the "future," she always, unless a drastic mistake in calculations occurs, arrives at a point in time where she is "unknown." Because she left in a specific moment in time and never influenced the outcome of the future. If she travels to the past, there is slightly more risk, even if the technology ensures that she becomes a passive observer, immune to the changes she might otherwise cause. It's not recommended to travel to the past, generally. The technology leans into exploring alternate realities rather than the user's timeline.

Here where it gets??? The tachyons act as a sort of navigational tool? Allowing precise tuning to specific points in time and space by riding the vibrations of the strings? That's... a work in progress, and I'm no physicist. I only know that I also need to elaborate on the differences between the Temporal Bubble Technology (TBT?) and Classic Temporal Manipulation (CTM?);

I was also thinking about "entangled nodes" aka key events in time, where changes create ripples across the timeline. Like... there's an established link between certain events due to quantum entanglement and it allows for the manipulation of said events, where changes in one era directly affect another? I headcanon that Helena has a bit of a better chance to travel to the past with few repercussions because in plenty alternate timelines she died at a younger age during the Aktau station incident. And that incident is one of those entangled events that's prevalent throughout most timelines...? Err? This is where I am tired an I call quits for now.

I know it’s kind of empty

But I’m planning on posting things here soon. First I’ll work on an introductory post that will basically cover the details on what’s going on (with art of course!) and I’ll do asks in the second post if it all fits! Which is to say, please ask things if you have asks right off the bat! Some things you may want to know are that this takes place (technically) in triple threat, but the events of completing the mission have already happened. Now Henry can strangely see the resets, and has yet to tell his friends. The reason this happens after ctm is because according to Puffballs, Henry has never been able to see the endings, even during ctm, so to basically stay headcanon (without it technically being stated false), the events happen even after we see the end screen, so ever since offscreen happened essentially! I’ll go into more detail about all of this soon, as well as where everybody generally is, toppats, government, etc! Yeah, there is a bit of trauma in the blog because with stickmin learning of his powers, he learns of the various resets, other endings etc, but he cannot go to the other endings, he’s just aware they exist, and has flashes to them. I figure it would make the most sense if he isn’t able to go there, but is able to see flashes, he might not have context for certain endings, like tcw or vh :’) Sorry so many words! It will mostly be art from askblog onward ><
