Daily Dragon #162 - Guhuzard

Cute, fragile dragons that are mostly seen in plains and wooded areas. They are incredibly docile and friendly. Despite their prominent fangs, their mouths are so small that they can only eat things like bugs, berries, and nuts.

And this isn't exactly a redraw, but I saw this sketch of something I didn't finish for the Daily Dragon challenge. Not sure what it was meant to be but I think I made something pretty cute from the concept :)

Simple as simple gets, these dragons live in plains where they eat, sleep, and thrive. They're not particularly aggressive, lacking any sort of elemental breath. But they can get territorial, so it's best to stay away from them if encountered.

PSA/Thoughts on “Use of AI in manhwa”

I try not to go on messageboards because they aren’t very productive, but I do like to read certain people’s thoughts on various updated manhwa it gets lonely in my echo chamber

But what really annoyed me, is there’s a thread on one of the subreddits, there’s individuals, who know NOTHING about the art process, are accusing Hayeon-nim of using AI art in this series.

Again, uneducated accusations like that are all over Reddit, so that’s why I avoid them most of the time. I don’t have all day to educate people,

But I do want to address AI art in general, because people are quick to assume something is “AI art” and it’s extremely insulting to actual artists.

AI art = completely created by an algorithm, a machine. A person enters in a prompt, and an image is generated. It’s not art. It’s a collection of data pixels created from a machine. In the mainstream, people are quick to jump and accuse someone of AI art if the Hands are weird, because AI can’t completely replicate hands yet. That is a complete generalization.

What people don’t understand, is the existence of “assets”. This is a term referring to the pre-set images that a human creates, for the sole purpose of making other artist’s lives easier. Webtoon artists are always on a time crunch, publishing 80+ pages of full color comics a week, so they rely on such assets to make their workflow smoothly. We’ve all seen it: the flowers on the background, lace, ruffles, frills, castle-nim, the food on the table, jewelry etc.

The thing is, the majority of these assets were created by a human being for use by other human beings. All (or supposed to be all) of the assets on the CSP asset store, is created by a person. The software encourages artists to make and upload their own assets, so they can earn “clippy points”, so they can purchase other assets. (Otherwise you have to pay a membership fee). Other Korean asset sites like acon or postype have fancier, unique assets for a fee (depending on what you’re looking for, a set of assets can range from free to $200+!).

That is to say, as a fellow artist im VERY familiar with artist styles and if a certain series uses assets. Some series, like Marionette or Siren, use so many assets that I personally can’t handle, because my brain can’t enjoy the series because all it registers is ASSET. ASSET ASSET.

ALL ROFAN MANHWA USE ASSETS in one way or another.

Besides the examples of assets I mentioned above, another type of asset is the 3-D model type. Some artists, like Cierra (artist of “Beatrice”) use complete adult body 3D models to help speed up their drawing process and to ensure decent anatomy.

Utilizing 3D Assets, by referencing or tracing is not AI art. It is a person using any available resources to speed up their work process.

So back to Hayeon-nim. She’s a professional artist. She’s under a time crunch. So of course, she’ll utilize both brush and 3D assets. Just like when other artists use them, I’m confident I can identify 95%+ of the assets that she uses.

In Season 2, she utilized quite a bit of various hair assets that annoyed me (sorry hayeon-nim), but that has toned down quite a bit in Season 3. However, she started using more hand assets in season 3. From eyeballing it, i think one is a 3D model from the CSP store (avail for purchase), and the other is from another source that I’m not familiar with. But it’s definitely an asset. Based on S1 and S2 art, she is a professional and is capable of drawing hands. But on a time crunch, it’s just more efficient to use a pose-able 3D model.

The discussion on Reddit was from Ch 88, regarding Lehan’s hand:

It’s not an AI hand. It’s extremely rude and degrading to post off-model images, proceed to get clout at the expense of others, fully knowing manhwa artists are working inhumane hours to provide those very same people entertainment. It’s also super disrespectful to accuse professional (or even hobbyists) artists of AI, when they tried their best to draw something nice, spending hours/days on it and is accused of not even drawing it at all.

The PMV won’t feature any book-specific spoilers, and will mainly go over the events that led up to Vozeo becoming the main villain. I don’t know when the PMV will be finished because I still have yet to find a good animation program that won’t cost over one thousand dollars. I have Clip Studio Paint Pro, but the EX version (which gives you more freedom when it comes to animation) costs over $200 dollars. I have DaVinci Resolve for a video editing program, which I have yet to try out because I can’t animate much of anything.

But I think I should be able to get CSP EX soon, if they have a Black Friday sale this year. If I can get that before the end of the year, I should be able to have the PMV ready and uploaded by the time I have to start attending classes for my second Associate’s Degree in August of 2022! I probably won’t be making PMV’s very often simply because putting videos together is rather tedious for me to do on a regular basis.

BACOLOD CITY – The City of San Carlos in northern Negros Occidental has conducted a series of service caravans in remote villages for the implementation of the Retooled Community Support Program (RCSP) as part of the government efforts to end the local communist armed conflict.

On Monday, the city government reported the holding of an immersion activity led by Mayor Renato Gustilo in Barangay Codcod on Saturday, which came after the launching of the RSCP through a service caravan in the village on February 3.

“This is the right time to air your sentiments to the government so it can act especially on the projects for the development of your community,” the mayor told some 200 participants from various sub-villages during the gathering also attended by representatives of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG).

Gustilo assured residents that the city government will support these projects and allocate funds with assistance from the provincial and the national governments, and they just have to trust the government and be patient.

“Only the government has the capacity to help solve the problems in (your) community, not the armed group of rebels,” he added.

Local Government Operations Officer Steve Yap said the DILG will also lobby for funding for the identified projects.

Codcod village head Danilo Lastimoso expressed his appreciation to both the city government and the DILG for conducting the immersion activity.

It gave assurance to the people that the government is serious in its commitment to bring change and to include them in the development process, he said.

Among the concerns and needs raised by the community were farm-to-market roads, electrification, water supply, health center facility, and senior citizens’ benefit.

The city government also brought the service caravan to Barangay Guadalupe on February 12 as well as in Barangay Buluangan, on February 10. Another service caravan was also held in Barangay Nataban on February 7.

On January 21, the Negros Occidental provincial government launched the “Serbisyo Negrosanon” to implement the RCSP with a caravan of services hosted by the municipality of Isabela.

The RCSP was formulated to strengthen its forerunner, the Community Support Program (CSP), which was an initiative of the military, and to initiate efforts driven mainly by the local government.

It supports the whole-of-nation approach embodied in Executive Order 70, which formed the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC), and led to the adoption of a National Peace Framework. (PNA)

Clojure isn’t a mainstream programming language. But the FreshCode team regularly completes projects with this powerful and convenient solution. That’s why I want to describe technical reasons in which Clojure development matters.

Why Clojure?

What is the final goal of creating any programming language? From my point of view, it aims to enable writing clear and effective code. Rich Hickey, the author of Clojure, wanted to make written programs simple. This helps to speed up the software development process, as well as reduce the time needed for code understanding, changing, and support.

Clojure's syntax can be a challenge for beginners. At the same time, it’s easy and convenient for learning and coding. After getting used to this language, you will see the technical benefits, which are especially important for enterprise projects.

All Clojure advantages are based on four principles. Let’s see how they are implemented in the language.

1. Homoiconicity

Clojure is related to the prominent and elegant Lisp family. One of its main properties is homoiconicity, which causes lively debate among software developers worldwide. According to Wikipedia: Imagine a Lisp program, which is presented as a normal Lisp list. Meanwhile, you can manipulate it using other Lisp code. So, Clojure developers can access and transform code into data. This Lisp peculiarity shows the concept of “code as data.”

This feature is conceptually possible because of the minimalist and utterly consistent Clojure syntax. The whole program code is represented via S-expressions (tree-like structures). This is the of the same type of code representation as that supported by Clojure Core. So, the code can be easily transformed into data through macros.

The strong macro system gives an opportunity to create code that generates other code. It enables software developers to write extensions without waiting for the programming language designers to implement it. The latter is also relevant for writing your own Domain-Specific Languages (DSLs) with the help of macros. They are responsible for the “translation” from your language to Clojure.

The benefits of well-designed DSLs are obvious. Clojure’s macro system gives you excellent opportunities for using them.

Writing the internal DSL with these macros leads to a new level of code refactoring. It also expands the language itself with modern elements. They are useful for the implementation of business goals in the context of each specific project.

The core.async macro in Clojure is one of the best examples of this principle benefit. core.async brings the power of CSP-style concurrency to Clojure. Thanks to the macro, it was created as a library without interrupting the Clojure language.

Compojure is another popular Clojure library that is based on the homoiconicity principle. Look at the example:

Here you can see the macro “GET”, which extends the language syntax. It provides a convenient interface for describing a series of “GET” endpoints. Their URL starts with /static/. The “location” parameter is also reverse here and validated with the help of regular expressions.

An anonymous function-processor is created here. It is transmitted to the special function make-route, which puts the function-processor into the supportive middleware.

This seems complex, but, in reality, this Clojure abstraction provides a nice coding experience and helps to make things referentially transparent. The macro above is needed for hiding the realization details from the developer. That is, of course, until he/she doesn’t need them.

2. Functional Approach

What causes complexity and problems in computer programs? Side effects are among the main factors of our challenges. You can’t fully avoid them. But you can localize the spillovers and the programming language should help you.

As a functional language, Clojure encourages you to write pure functions. The results of such functions depend only on the input parameters. So, it doesn’t matter how many times you start the function. The result is always the same. This simplifies testing because you don’t have to try various queues and find the right state of inputs.

Pure functions are also handy for analyzing and refactoring. They are extremely simple, even if they do a great job.

Clojure's beauty lies in how the language perfectly joins individual elements into a coherent whole.

Clojure, like JavaScript, operates using functions as values. So, they can be transmitted as parameters and returned from other functions. This provides flexibility for a developer because he/she can delay or customize an on-the-fly logic realization. Moreover, the functional approach enables making the processors middleware by default. So, you can customize them for different business goals, which range from logging to conditional email sending.

3. Immutable Data Structures

Clojure has features of an object-oriented language. So, it initially includes a set of immutable (unchangeable) structures and methods for working with them.

They look like common JavaScript arrays and Hash Maps. But any operation can’t change their values. Instead of changing, it creates an absolutely new structure with updated data.

The immutability is handy when writing multithreaded applications because it negates a whole class of bugs related to synchronization of changing variables between threads. So, you can build entire information models using the few immutable data structures included in Clojure. The predictable code is easier to write and easier to test, which helps to develop a product quickly.

For example, look at the FreshCode use case. The development of an e-commerce platform that supports more than one million users took just 4 months. It proves that Clojure allows programmers to focus on engineering efforts instead of extra details.

4. A Multipurpose Solution

Clojure is a good choice for a wide variety of projects. You can use it from social networking industry to Big Data solutions. Initially, the Clojure language was targeted for working with JVM. So, the most popular modern Clojure implementation uses the Java Virtual Machine. This enables simple interaction with Java libraries, creation of Java objects and using the Maven repository. Java platform’s maturity and the huge ecosystem provide many benefits for Clojure developers.

An interesting fact is that although JVM primarily runs Java, about 3% of JVM users are programming in Clojure. It’s a remarkable fact, which shows the great potential of functional programming and Clojure itself.

Moreover, ClojureScript is actively developing. This is another Clojure implementation, which includes compilation to JavaScript.

Due to the same syntax, you can write front-end in ClojureScript and backend in Clojure (or ClojureScript in the case of Node.js applications). What is more, sometimes the same code overlaps in the front-end and backend. The Clojure compiler allows you to put this code in *.cljc files and use it simultaneously on both sides.

World nations collectively boost global CSP capacity

Data and analytics company GlobalData says China will lead contributions to the global concentrated solar power (CSP) market by 2030, with many nations across the world also making significant contributions.

GlobalData estimates that global CSP will increase from 5.6 GW in 2018 to 22.4 GW in 2030 following significant capacity additions by China, Chile, and the Middle East and North Africa region.

The company’s latest report on CSP reveals a positive future for the global CSP market, with improved efficiencies, energy storage, cost reduction through competitive bidding and the development of PV-CSP hybrid systems.

GlobalData Power Analyst Pavan Kumar Vyakaranam commented, “The CSP industry added around 601 MW annual capacity in 2018, with projects being operational in countries such as Morocco, China, South Africa, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.

“The global CSP market is on a revival mode with reducing cost of generation through auction mechanism and hybrid PV-CSP. CSP with thermal storage will gain prominence due to increasing demand for reliable and stable power,” Vyakaranam continued.

“China added around 200 MW of CSP capacity in 2018, which is almost seven times its cumulative installed capacity at the end of 2017. [The] China CSP market gained momentum after the announcement of 20 CSP projects as part of the first batch of demonstration projects, which will get a feed-in tariff of RMB 1.15/kWh ($0.172/kWh),” he said.

Chile is also predicted to make significant CSP capacity additions, with the CSP market driven by the nation’s goal to achieve a 20% renewable energy target by 2025. To achieve this goal, the country held a series of technology-neutral auctions, which saw the average tariff plummet from $129/MWh in 2013 to $32.5/MWh in 2017.

Vyakaranam added, “In Middle East Africa, countries such as Morocco, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Israel will play a major role for CSP development during 2019–2030.

Pricing It Right

One of the hardest parts of your job as a real estate agent is the ability to price a seller's home correctly. There are so many variables that go along with accurate pricing and if agents do not consider all of these, they may be costing their sellers thousands of dollars in lost potential sales revenue. More often however, because of the inability to price correctly agents walk away empty-handed without ever having the opportunity to sell the home because the price the agent came up with is not consistent with the seller's expectations. Agents can spend hours doing CMAs only to find that what they are presenting to the potential seller(s) either wasn't enough information, the right kind of information, or the information the seller wanted or expected to hear.

The key to pricing it right is a combination of laser-focused accuracy and gut-wrenching honesty. This means that you are required to not only do your homework but also be able to present it flawlessly. Sellers often want to play the "name their price" game with you, but if you engage in the game you will lose on all counts because you will either walk away with a seriously overpriced listing, or you will walk away empty handed because the seller won't respect you.

If you can look at pricing as an essential part of what you do and an ethical part of what you do, it becomes a lot easier to tell sellers like it is. If your number one goal when you meet with a new seller is to tell them the market value based on all of your research - because it is professional negligence to do anything else - it makes presenting the facts about the price much easier for you.

Too many agents walk out of the listing presentation empty-handed or with listings that won't sell because they are overpriced and doomed from that first ill-fated meeting. Overpriced homes don't sell - period. The moment you embrace this idea is the moment you will be of greater service to your sellers and a better steward of your time and money.

Sellers want, need, and deserve to hear the truth, even if it is not the fantasy price they had in mind. The challenge is, of course, how you help a seller recover from the shock they may have when you deliver "the truth"? Always remember that taking an overpriced listing that won't sell will produce long-term pain for both you and the seller. The short-term pain you may experience when you deliver the truth to the seller is much more preferable. But agents must learn deliver this news in a responsible and caring way.

Today I want you to really think about all of the listings that you have taken in your career where you knew in your gut that they were overpriced and would not sell. Did you take the listing anyway hoping and praying for a miracle, or for time to pass so the seller would eventually weaken on their pricing position? How many listings did you spend countless hours and hard-earned money in marketing without a positive result? Overpriced listings aren't good for you, the sellers, your career, or your future business.

Make a commitment to run a business where the main focus is to provide 100% truthful pricing information, all the time. It shouldn't matter what the seller wants or needs.

Could you imagine calling a stockbroker and saying, "I know I paid $200 for X Company stock and it is trading for $150 today. But I really need $200. Can we just put it out there at $200 and see what happens?"

Of course not. That's not how the stock market works - and it's not how the real estate market should work either.

Overpriced listings do not sell and they erode your ability to price correctly. Pricing correctly not only includes research skills, but fine-tuned communication skills, and the ability to back up your price with research, facts, and explanation.

So, the next time you walk into a seller's home for a listing presentation ask yourself if the price you present, and ultimately list, the home at is the price you intended to present. Don't allow an overly-optimistic seller to sway you from what you know in your gut is the truth of pricing.

Increasing Yield and Enhancing Natural Resources Through Crop Diversification

The conservation benefits of diversified crop rotations have long been known – from healthier soil and less erosion to fewer pests and better water retention, diversified rotations can help farmers address a multitude of environmental concerns. A new report by the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS), a National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition (NSAC) member organization, highlights how these rotations can also increase yields and reduce the amount of money farmers have to spend on inputs.

UCS’ report, Rotating Crops, Turning Profits: How Diversified Farming Systems Can Help Farmers While Protecting Soil and Preventing Pollution (Rotating Crops, Turning Profits), details the impacts of on-farm diversification, the barriers to making the transition from a two-crop rotation to a more diversified rotation, and the ways in which policy can remove these barriers. Diverse crop systems, simply put, are those that include three or more crops in a rotation, rather than the usual one or two. Rotating Crops, Turning Profits builds onto an experiment led by Iowa State University (the “Marsden Farm Study”) that studied the combined effects of a diverse, no-till crop system on a farm’s yield and profitability. Taking this one step further, Rotating Crops, Turning Profits digs into the implications of a diversified system, not just on the farm, but for downstream communities and Iowa as a whole.

The findings and analysis from the Marsden Farm Study and the Rotating Crops, Turning Profits report are particularly salient given the downturn that has defined much of the American farm economy in recent years. Over the past four years, net farm income has declined by nearly fifty percent, largely due to low commodity prices of major crops like corn and soy. As the report points out, conservation farming practices and diversified crop plantings are key components of rebuilding a healthy farm economy that is able to remain viable during times of low commodity prices. Programs that encourage and reward these practices will be key priorities for NSAC and our members in the upcoming 2018 Farm Bill. This post will dig into some of the major highlights of UCS’ analyses, but to read the full report, click here.

The Marsden Farm Study

Iowa State’s Marsden Farm study was conducted in the ideal testing ground – the middle of the “corn belt,” the 12 state area of agriculture that dominates the Midwestern landscape. Corn and soybeans make up a whopping 70 percent of planted acres in these states. Many of the farms in this region have failed to adequately limit soil and nutrient loss from their farms, leading to water pollution and the creation of a “dead zone” in the Gulf of Mexico.

Beginning in 2003, Iowa State endeavored to quantify the benefits of crop diversification as away to encourage better environmental practices while not adversely affecting farm incomes. Researchers tested three variations of diversified systems, including one with planted oats and alfalfa (which can replace corn and soy as feed ingredients). Additionally, the experiment adjusted fertilizer and till versus no till farming methods to further differentiate outcomes. The three test plots included:

Traditional two-year soybean and corn rotation, using synthetic fertilizer only;

Three-year crop rotation of corn, soy, and oats, a small grain that can grow in cooler months, with the addition of clover as a cover crop and no-till, using a combination of cattle manure and synthetic fertilizer; and

A four-year crop rotation of corn, soy, oats, and alfalfa, using no-till and a combination of cattle manure and synthetic fertilizer.

The study revealed that multiple-crop rotations provided significant benefits to a farm’s productivity and input expenditures. Among the key findings, the major highlights included:

Higher yields: corn yields were 2 to 4 percent higher per acre and soybean yields were 10 to 17 percent higher per acre.

Profit remained similar such that revenue generated was statistically similar across the three variations.

Herbicide usage reduced by up to 51 percent, reducing nutrient loss by 81 to 96 percent.

Synthetic nitrogen pesticide usage reduced by 88 to 92 percent; organic pesticide use was reduced by 43 to 57 percent.

UCS Analyses: Digging Deeper

While the Marsden Farm study highlighted the direct benefits of diversification to farm income and local ecology, UCS’ analysis outlines how these changes might be felt state-wide. The report begins with a single hypothesis: adopting diverse rotation systems on Iowa’s most erodible soils will produce dramatic benefits for a farm, downstream communities, and the environment.

To test their hypothesis, UCS isolated Iowa’s top 25 most erodible soil areas, taken from the top 25 percent most erosive watershed districts in the state (importantly, UCS also found that most soils in Iowa, not just these top 25 counties, averaged loss rates above tolerable soil loss levels, as defined by the U.S. Department of Agriculture). Based on Iowa State University’s Daily Erosion Project Model, UCS was able to gauge the benefits that might arise from corn-soy-oat and corn-soy-oat-alfalfa crop rotations.

Using an economic model, the report then analyzed the economic impacts of diversification for the entire state of Iowa and the extent that diversification would be viable state-wide. Specifically, the report sought to establish the number of acres that could transition to a longer rotational scheme without negatively affecting farmers’ yield or revenue.

Scaling Up, Statewide Impacts

UCS first analyzed what diversification would mean for Iowa’s most erodible soils (15 percent of all Iowa cropland). As Table 1 shows, both the no till corn-soy-oats and the no till corn-soy-oats-alfalfa rotations could decrease soil erosion by over 91 percent, from 10.39 tons per acre every year to less than one ton per acre every year.

In addition to reducing soil erosion, UCS found that these multiple-crop rotations would lead to reduced fertilizer runoff, protecting and improving overall water quality while also saving the downstream community millions of dollars in surface water clean up costs. Similarly, the minimal use of synthetic nitrogen-based fertilizer in these systems (which rely more heavily on cattle manure and cover crops), were found to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

But to what degree would it be possible to expand these sustainable farming practices to the rest of the state? The report estimates that between 5 million and 11 million acres of Iowa cropland could be sustainably diversified (i.e., diversified in such a way that farmers could maintain the new systems and not feel pressure to revert to the traditional two-crop rotation). Note that under this scenario the report assumes that the remaining cropland would continue under traditional planting schemes. A summary of UCS’ conclusions follows:

Diversified crop rotations could be applied on 20 – 40 percent of acres over time without farmers returning to corn-soy rotations because of demand.

No-till production methods would reduce soil erosion by about 88 percent as compared to a traditional, tilled corn-soy production system.

Reduced soil erosion would mean less watershed contamination. The study estimated that regional taxpayers could save up to $272 million in water cleanup costs.

The combined benefit to society of both limiting greenhouse gas emissions by reducing fertilizer usage and increasing soil carbon sequestration could save over $200 million annually for society as a whole.

Diversified Farming in the Context of the 2018 Farm Bill

Despite the many benefits of switching to a diversified crop rotation, many farmers are still hesitant or unable to make such a transition. One key way in which the farm bill can protect and uphold diversified, sustainable farming systems is through advancing working lands stewardship and comprehensive conservation. NSAC’s priorities in the 2018 Farm Bill include enhanced support for USDA programs that help farmers implement and enhance conservation systems. The Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP), for example, provides support to farmers to install and improve resource-conserving crop rotations, among other conservation activities. As the farm bill debate progresses, we will continue to look for opportunities to support diversification through conservation, research, marketing, and other farm bill programs.
