Day 29: Exhibition Program

Ain’t No Mountain High Enough

Just soo much fun! I love how they say for touring shows they always want to have a program that’s just for them and is fun and they get to dance. They love their more emotional programs too but they love having that balance and fun creative outlet and entertaining an audience with something not so serious in theme. I also love hearing Scott describe the song and the dance- T loves Marvin Gaye and so of course scootie will love dancing with her to one of her fave songs- anything to make her happy, and as always sneaks in a back front door brag for how amazing T is while demeaning himself (oh scootie pattotie 🥲🤦‍♀️). And you can so see how happy they are. Not to mention the CRAZY tricks, superb skating skills and star power. This version from worlds is particularly endearing. During the practice they are obviously trying to remember it as it’s the first time they are performing it, presumingly having learned it over the previous summer maybe or sometime earlier in the season. It’s cute to see T taking the lead in the practice and then also in the performance kinda coz Scott.. doesn’t know what he’s doing 😄 in the most adorable way. You can see their personalities shine in a way that kinda takes you back to them as kids from an audience perspective- we know them as these incredible athletes who are oly and world champions and can perform anything and everything to supreme quality, but getting to see them just have fun, as T would say much later (post retirement) that the giddy joy they had dancing together as kids learning dances and playing characters, she kinda lost the excitement in that until they made their comeback. But this program here I think you see a little bit of it and I hope they did to. Overall it’s just so pure to see two best friends doing what they love together. That is the basis of everything about them and in this dance it is maybe the most obvious 💙

OH! And let us not forget the return of the Pink Floyd split slide/lift 💯

TTYCT - Abbotsford review 

Show + Meet and Greet!!

Did that actually happen? Last night feels like a dream

Turns out I’m bad at this live-blogging thing but thanks @mariefrances-hypegirl for letting me freak out to her during the show

- You know it’ll be good when you see Marie France, Mathieu, and Sam walking around within the first 30 seconds of being in the venue

-After the cast was introduced, we all stood to sing Oh Canada. A French and English version by Serena Ryder

-I loved that T and S added in the “most decorated figure skaters of all time” line. They deserve to have that screamed around the world

-Tracy Wilson did the sweetest intro for Kaitlyn and Andrew

-Kaitlyn‘s sparkly Tango dress is STUNNING irl. The sparkles catch the light so well and I am just in awe

-Kaetlyn’s Swan Lake/Black Swan routine was so elegant. T introducing her was giving me intense @rainy-sunshine TS+1 vibes

-I’ll admit, I haven’t watched much of Elvis’s skating but after that Dragon routine I may need to

-I freaking love Meagan and Eric so much 

- I love how much love the cast has for Patrick

-I swear Patrick’s skating can clear skin, reduce stress, and solve all of the world’s problems

-The MR intro is so dramatic and epic. The CBC Roxxane documentary clips woven in were a nice touch

-I can’t believe Tessa’s team event dress has managed to last this long! Even Scott went back to the non-sparkly mesh shirt from Nationals

-The 1st act closing was so incredibly nostalgic. THERE ARE SO MANY PHOTOS AND VIDEOS FROM THE PAST. MY HEART CANT HANDLE THIS

- I’m loving these moments where they just bear their souls to the audience. It’s really heartwarming and genuine to see how much they care about their fans

-THERE WAS A MAHLER WOVEN INTO TS’s SOLO PART AND I ALMOST LOST MY SHIT

-The concept of having a group number fade into one person or vice versa is really the best of both worlds -intermission- 

Oooo Mathieu Caron video about costumes. The TTYCT media people are seriously amazing - Y’all have seen the shirt ripping, dance battling, Maneater vibes, and 😳🙈-ness of all of this. It was a lot and I’m so here for it. It’s going to be crazy by the time the show reaches the east coast 

- They still managed to put in the cutest Scott/Andrew/Meagan moment though (Not sure if that’s enough to make it family friendly)

- If Patrick’s skating can’t cure cancer than I’m positive Eric playing an original composition with Patrick skating to it will

- I strive to be the kind of person who commissions hanging lights that descend from the ceiling to turn into a dance platform/stage. We all need more T and S off ice dancing  

- I think the flash mob number could’ve gone a little smoother with the audience participation part but I think that’s more of a first show thing. They showed a clip of Sam teaching everyone to dance during intermission so tons of people were up and dancing so at least that part worked out

-Remember that part in Rolling in the Deep from CSOI 2012 where everyone is strutting down the ice like the epic bosses they are? 

Sweet Dreams are Made of This was that but 10000x better and with aviators and skin-tight black and gold costumes

-Eric was swinging Meagan around by her feet and her head got so close to the ice she was slapping the ice with her hand. Is that supposed to happen?!

-S and T in Diamonds was everything I hoped for and more

-THOSE NUDE SPARKLY JUMPSUITS FOR THE GIRLS AND CLASSIC WHITE SHIRT AND BLACK PANTS FOR THE GUYS WAS JUST SO 

-Yay confetti

-This felt shorter than SOI but it was definitely jam-packed with content

-Ahh TTYCT. What a gift to humankind

M&G

- Sam is a sweetheart and went around signing stuff and taking photos with everyone who asked

- We tried to tell Marie she should be on the ice too but she said she couldn’t because Patch was in Montreal!! She used a term that I can’t remember (partner? lover?) and ugh my heart

- @danelledo is such a wonderful human! She even stayed around until the end and helped take action photos for people as they talked to Tessa and Scott

- EVERYONE IS SO GENUINELY NICE AND WHOLESOME AND PERFECT

- It makes me so happy to learn Patrick still has this giant beluga whale stuffed animal from Nationals somewhere in his apartment

If you’re looking for my (almost entirely complete) playlist of all their programs you can find it on spotify and apple music. (Like, I’m literally missing 5 songs/programs).

The only programs I’m aware of missing (according to Wikipedia) on this list is their 2002-2003 season (OD and FD), as well as “All We Have” (a program they did twice at Japan Stars on Ice in 2015) and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” (which they did at a Holiday Festival in 2015).

Earlier, I had an anon asking about show costumes and I said I wanted to add visuals... so this literally related to my answer then.  Here’s some of them:

1.  Group show number.  Possibly the weirdest costumes VM have ever worn (not as bad though as some I’ve seen, believe it or not).  Spaceman meets pointy shoulders and leotards.  Nothing to do with the music.  (Artistry on Ice 2014, not to be confused with Art on Ice 2015.)

2.  Group show numbers.  Sponsored costumes, clearly an aesthetic.  (All That Skate 2011.)  

3.  Tessa’s choice, individual performance.  VM’s Ain’t No Mountain High Enough disco dress - this pic is actually a good one of it, but I didn’t like it then and I still don’t, for a lot of little reasons... but it was a costume that when I saw it live, was the 100% difference between photos/film and a live performance.  She lit up like a disco ball under the show lights and it was actually really impressive. (CSOI 2012, though she wore it at the Worlds 2012 gala too.)

4&5.  Stars on Ice 2008 and Scott Hamilton and Friends 2018.  Stars on Ice regularly reuses their own costumes but also lends or rents them out.

When u referenced Tessa’s costume also being from SOI, you weren’t referencing her new costume for dark times, right?

Oh, no, sorry for the confusion.  As far as I know, the new costume for Dark Times is new all-around.  

I meant, in the Skate Niagara version of Good Kisser, Scott was wearing a CSOI-borrowed costume, and so was Tessa.  Both of them wore those costumes in CSOI 2012, but in different programs - Scott’s was worn during the finale to The Dog Days Are Over, and Tessa’s was a mid-show group program to Rolling in the Deep, IIRC.
