Reading this as a queer guy felt like hearing the Kill Bill sirens going off: it’s so clear that any erotic charge towards sex workers of any kind, gay men, trans women, or stigmatised forms of sex are seen as polluting ‘proper’ straight life.

If you read through anti-porn forums and programmes as someone who knows what conversion therapy looks like, you will find its tells in abundance. Heavy emphasis on shaming, while also promising that the programme will provide a way out of that shame; advice that new desires might not go away, but can be ignored and managed; unspoken assumptions that monogamous, cisgender, heterosexual, vanilla sex is the sexual ideal; heavy use of pseudoscience; intimations that the reader is being purposely corrupted by the porn industry or a wider, conspiratorial ‘agenda’. UK Rehab’s page on porn addiction advises that “pornography addiction can lead to changes in sexual tastes, desires and practices […] which can cause huge problems for addicts in relationships. The addict may begin to engage in different forms of sexual experience and expression, which may include risky sexual behaviour […] Even in less extreme cases, as mentioned above repeated exposure to hard-core pornography can lead to changed expectations of partners, which can make attaining a “normal” sex life increasingly difficult”. What is ‘normal’ here? What is ‘risky’? What are the ‘tastes’ in question?”

I won't be making many posts on this situation, but after a few people have reached out, I thought I'd explain some things. these are just some of the messages I've sifted through and have been deleting. this has been going on for weeks - they come in bursts and I turned off my messages, but I wanted to donate to causes sent my way, so I opened them again and after a few days it picked back up.

I can only assume these messages are related to my poke art. Sharing these doodles, these sketches and ideas - that was my escape while my personal life has been so rocky. Maybe it's an unhealthy escape, I don't know. but to be told there is a group of people taking those things and talking amongst themselves and laughing while also pretending to not... My trust has completely been broken if it's true, and I'm at a loss. I'm only vaguely part of two groups through association, so I've narrowed it down, I guess.

It's also just simply that the things being said are very hurtful, and if people really think I'm spreading pedophilia, I don't want to keep doing that. I don't want to insult people with the things I do, either. I try to be incredibly mindful of the images I produce, aware these characters are children, and never set out to put them in any adult situations. I've never drawn them to kiss and even with my aged up designs, I try to keep things innocent, as I'm really sensitive to this subject as a victim of CSA myself.

...But I also know that it's hard for me, as a victim of CSA, to have an objective view on the situation. I'm truly sorry to someone if I've offended them, so I've set on a mission to try and remove my art everywhere, just in case. I don't want to add to a problem if I am.

I'm just not sure what to do from here on.

I only hope that if anyone is part of this group where they make fun of me, they can tell me who it is one day to put my mind at ease because now, I can't really trust anyone in this space, and I feel like I've lost an entire group of people I had an ability to talk with.

I read the upd8 and I have to say I completely understand why the content warnings were what they were. While I hope that we can have more explanatory, even spoilery content warnings in the future, the bottom line is that there was no CSA in this upd8. Its just that Vriska called Doc Scratch a ped*phile which is a short step up from everyone just calling him "creepy" a bunch of times in the original comic.

But here's the thing, Vriska saying this doesn't make it any more canon than it was before. She is just calling his coding what it is.

There isn't CSA in this upd8, and there isn't even really implied CSA in Vriska's past. Doc Scratch is the same weirdo he always was. The only change, from my perspective, is that now the Beyond Canon team is saying, loud enough for everyone to hear "This stuff isn't funny and isn't a joke." Which was deeply needed. Especially since I reread Homestuck THIS YEAR and the amount of pedo jokes in there is actually insane and aging like MILK.

but all westerns want to talk about, is hamas.

because the murder of palestinians by the IDF is status quo; it doesn't affect them. what's one more dead palestinian but a statistic? but if hamas has killed a handful of israelis — if they've go as far as to even kill babies — then that justifies the extermination of two million palestinians, children and infants included.

westerns will even say that the palestinians brought it on themselves; that they should have know that a drop of israeli blood requires a river in return.

and just so we're clear, you don't have to like hamas. but when you equate hamas with the IDF, when you derail every conversation by demanding a condemnation of 'both sides,' or when you, god forbid, agree that israel is justified in dismantling hamas — which, as israel themselves have outlined, will involve the complete destruction of gaza and the murder of hundreds of thousands of civilians — then either wake up, or own up to the fact that you're a participant in the extermination of the palestinian people.

there is something so special to me about the way beyond canon plays with the established language of symbolism. characters are drawn in kid mode when they don't feel like adults, on even a metanarrative level.

in chapter 4 of hell tier, vriska is "changed into uniform" by doc scratch, and vitally, the "uniform" in question is the form of her six-sweep self, and it disgusts her.

after the battle, it starts from john's perspective, and the veil over his perception of himself and his friends becomes very immediately clear.

it's even capitalized upon in later pages, after jade punches john and everyone is looking down on him, and he feels so out of his depth.

john never grew up. he never left the game. but unlike vriska, this metanarrative veil of "kid mode" is something he has embraced as a comfortable, familiar shield against reality. for vriska, it was forced on her, a traumatic and violating episode of age regression for the morbid amusement of a horrible man, just so that he would have the pleasure of toying with a child, and not an adult. an analogue, to the terrors she felt back then, and how the game affected her.

but john? john is not vriska. that difference was staked years ago. john was handed his life and his quest on a silver platter, and was scarcely challenged by anything besides his own stubbornness. anything that did challenge him, he would go out of his way to ignore, to repress, to get away from. and it's catching up to him now, when everyone else grew up, and he missed it.
