Thinking about how Courtney is 10 in 1986 so she would be 15 in 1991…would Teenager!Courtney even choose a side in the Console Wars? If so, which one? We know 10yo Courtney loves her some Pac-Man, wants to make a video game called Crystal Starshooter when she grows up (about an astronaut by that name who starts off by fighting hostile aliens and then starts trying to befriend them - the latter part we will discuss in a moment) and her second book mentions Mario Kart. But we also know that Courtney is into environmental issues, standing against oppression, and generally being a good friend - which are three attributes associated with a certain blue hedgehog who would come onto the video game scene in 1991.

Other pieces of information that may play a role include the fact that the reason she changed the end of the story for her Crystal Starshooter game idea is because she had witnessed a live TV broadcast of the Challenger disaster, and she felt like having the whole thing be about fighting was wrong. It also includes the fact that she prefers stuffed animals over dolls under most circumstances (Molly being an exception because she can relate to having a far-away father), and the fact that, in her second book, she befriends a kid who is HIV+ and has to stand up for him even though it gets her caught in the crossfire of hate and misinformation - meaning that Courtney is a sweetheart and a tough cookie, as well as an animal lover. Oh yeah and she has a pet Guinea pig.

Would Teen!Courtney stay loyal to Mario, get into Sonic, or enjoy both games equally without really paying attention to branding? I could imagine any of these scenarios, but I lean towards her at least liking Sonic a little, because cute animal who fights oppression, helps the environment, and makes friends, all while having an amazing amount of confidence. Also bright colors go wheeeeeee…

The World by Us girls decided to go as different decades! Maritza as an 80’s exercise enthusiast, Evette as a 70’s hippie, and Makena as a Roaring 20’s dancer.

Amara is a pirate, while Jess is going as Elizabeth Schuyler. (I’ve always thought that Jess looks like Phillipa Soo from the original cast when her hair is down). And Charlotte is wearing the Grecian Goddess outfit.

Courtney is of course Crystal Starshooter, Maryellen is a cowboy, and Julie decided to reuse her pioneer dress to be Laura Ingles.

Finally Angie is a flapper, Luci is an astronaut, and Lindsey is ready for a 1950s Sock Hop!

10/31/2023: Happy Dolloween!

Up top we have Courtney in her canonical Crystal Starshooter costume. The fact that Courtney is such a freaking little nerd that she invented her own video game space heroine protagonist and cosplayed her is a big part of why we were so drawn to her in the first place, not gonna lie! (She is in many ways very similar to Cameron from the show Halt and Catch Fire, says @incomprehensiblelentils.)

Then we have our Ninth House girlies in some skull-themed attire, because we do bones, etc. Both outfits were found on eBay, Harrow's here and Gideon's here. Harrow is also wearing the blouse, tights, and shoes from the Snowflake Jumper, because the mere thought of baring that much skin offended her delicate sensibilities (frankly, she wants gloves, too). Gideon, meanwhile, is absolutely delighted to be showing off her arms; she's wearing the loafers from the Tartan Plaid outfit, which she'll model in full at a later date.

I agree. They better release one eventually. I mean, Crystal Starshooter is a big part of Courtney’s stories. She’s her alter ego.

Maybe they’re waiting until it’s closer to Halloween to release it? That’s my hope anyway.

Probably Kirsten, but I have darker hair. There aren’t many dolls with dark/dirty blonde hair.

4. which girl is your least favorite and why?

Probably gonna be controversial but……. Courtney……. I haven’t read her books but I’m not a big fan of her appearance (she looks too much like Maryellen, who I’m not a huge fan of either) or the over-the-top colorful and loud 1980s aesthetic and she seems like an appeal to nostalgia and product placement/name-dropping other 80s franchises. California is so ethnically diverse and yet they had to make another white blonde Cali girl when they already had Julie… 🙃

You know what opportunity American Girl missed out on? Giving Courtney a little Nintendo that hooks up to her TV set. I know it’s canonically a Nintendo, but even just a non-branded generic imitation would be so cute. You could plug it in to the back and a little Crystal Starshooter animation would play on the TV screen while the dolls hold their controllers. We could really actually see the game that Courtney dreamed about. Like I think the workout video was a cute idea and I love it, but for a girl whose story’s central theme is video games and whose story never discussed working out, her collection has a severe lack of video game merchandise.

I know probably none of my followers are here for my American Girl headcanons, but I like to think Courtney grew up to work in the games industry

We already know she's frustrated with the lack of female characters, something I felt when I was about her age and why I used to main Coco in CTR, and has her OC Crystal Starshooter that she likes to imagine as a video game character... imagine when Courtney finds out Samus is a woman?????

Maybe as a teen in the 90s, she plays around at home trying to make her own games for fun -- In real life, just a few years before her books take place, two teenagers were making games at home to pass time over summer break and ended up founding the studio that made Crash Bandicoot, Jak and Daxter, Uncharted, and The Last of Us

Or when she's a fully grown adult seeing more and more games come out with female protagonists in the 2000s, 2010s, 2020s?????? *chef's kiss*
