Night Thrills Chapter One

The dark hours of the night were quiet, still, save for only nighttime bugs, fish or frogs disturbing the water outside the cabin nestled among reeds and mangrove trees. Inside there was a young man curled up in bed, hugging a pillow close in the absence of his mate, who was out hunting or just enjoying a late-night swim. Aomid was very confident that nothing and no one would dare to intrude on his territory, even while he was away. But maybe he was TOO confident of that... A window was open in the room, letting a warm, gentle breeze and the ambient sounds of frogs croaking and crickets chirping in through the window screen.  

        Smoke began to drift through the window screen, slowly taking the shape of a man- pale, with deep red eyes and short brown hair. He stood over Benjamin, watching him sleep for a moment before he released a different smoke above him. 

        Benjamin shifted slightly with a soft groan. His dream changed from a nice, cozy picnic with Aomid to a strange field with weird, hazy clouds. Soon enough though his moving around stopped and he was still again. The smoke was like knockout gas or chloroform, ensuring that Benjamin wouldn’t wake up for a while yet. The mystery man carefully picked him up, escaping with him out of the front door and into the night. 

        Aurora had just returned to her home, rubbing her head and muttering about a headache, returning from a night out hunting and even a little partying with Crynn and Erelas, her friends and the lords of werewolves and dragons respectively. As she headed inside her phone started to ring. When she answered with a grumbled “hello” she held the phone away from her ear. Aomid had called but she couldn’t quite make out what he was saying between hisses and shouts. “Aomid...Aomid! Slow down, I can hardly hear you, and stop yelling, I have a headache...drank a little too much from a drunk guy last night.” She muttered the bit about the drunk guy. 

        “Benjamin is missing! I came home earlier, and he wasn’t in bed or anywhere else in the house! I also checked outside, but he isn’t anywhere! He wouldn’t go too far alone!” 

        Aurora’s eyes widened a bit. How could he be missing? 

        “What? What do you mean he’s “missing”? Why weren’t you with him? You two are inseparable any other day!” 

        “Have you met me, Aurora? You’d have to be stupid to mess with me or Benny. I thought he’d be ok, and this isn’t the first time I’ve done it either.” Aomid hissed, pacing back and forth on the other end of the line. 

Aurora rolled her eyes and sighed. “Sometimes I swear you’re stupid. Come over, I'll call Taveah over, see if she may be able to help you.” 

        Taveah arrived first, a short, young girl with dark red hair and green eyes, popping against her pale skin, her short frame hugged by a brown sundress, hair styled in a half-up half-down bun and little jewel earrings.  

        Aurora greeted her with a little bow of her head, stepping back to let her inside. “Thank you for coming, Taveah. Aomid should be here soon, would you like a drink or something to eat in the meantime?” 

The younger girl nodded a bit. “Yes please. Some cake if you have it, and some tea please.” She requested as she sat down. 

        Aurora nodded, heading into the kitchen, soon returning with a tray with two slices of cake and two cups of tea. She set the tray down and took her tea and cake, both a bit more red than Taveah’s. After taking a moment to eat, Aurora spoke.         “Aomid needs your help. He said Benjamin went missing while he was out hunting, and Benjamin is nowhere to be found.”          Taveah listened, sighing softly. “That is troubling. I will need to see the room he disappeared from for a clearer picture to figure out what happened.” 

        “Alright then.” Aurora grabbed her phone, opening it and about to call Aomid wondering why he was taking so long when her door bust open and the large snake man slithered in. 

Aomid had long, black hair, grey-green skin mottled with scales that matched the black and brown sleek, reptilian body below his waist, a striped pattern all the way from his shoulders to the tip of his tail. 

        “Is she here? Tell me she’s here!” Aomid rushed out, shoving his hair back, chest heaving slightly from trying to rush to Aurora’s home. He should have just used his human form to get here but he was too preoccupied to think of that at the time. 

        Aurora groaned a bit, shaking her head at the ruined door. “Yes, she is but next time at least try to let know you’ll be late or at the very least try not to break my door down.” She crossed her arms. 

“Well excuse me but in case you forgot I’m a little too stressed out to worry about your stupid door.” Aomid hissed, eyes narrowed in Aurora’s direction. 

        Teveah stepped between them, arms out to keep them more at bay of each other. “Alright you two, save it, this will get us nowhere,” Teveah said softly, looking between them with a subtle warning look to drop the ridiculous argument before it could really start, then turned to Aomid. “Take a deep breath for me and tell me what you know about Benjamin missing.”

Okay, so I wanted to give a bit of background for these two.

Celia and Ryys have been friends since childhood, having grown up in the same settlement, the UPB. The pair was essentially trauma bonded together after being forced to fake their own deaths and run from the Empowered (Which are the police of the UPB, effectively just drones to the higher government.)

After they escaped they spent the next 6 or so years 'Wandering', (which is a form of randomized teleportation which is commonly used by Mask Makers who are looking to capture more visages) which went fine, they met plenty of people, saw all sorts of things...

And they had fun with it all, they were adventuring, plenty of people's ideal life. But adventuring is short lived, that's simply a fact of the profession. So, after those 5 years they split off, Celia went to Remember, an independent faction of mercenaries; Ryys went off to wander again, studying the people residing within Crynn.

This picture takes place roughly 10 years after they parted ways, after Ryys was handed ownership of the Mirage, another independent faction, specialising in illusory combat.
