It's easy enough to tell with this confession that they are... right on the money. The mortification is something he could feel for miles. He... chuckles and smiles at the genuine effort on Jonas's end for a coverup." Ohhhh, Thomas, that makes so much more sense, I think there's a Thomas I went to school with." He pretends it works, to save Jonas face.

He already knew to a degree due to the feeling of... complicated feelings, but chose for them to stay friends. Or at least to leave them up to Jonas, who he was sure wouldn't act on them, when he accepted so many things as they were.

Really, Jonas deserved a friend who didn't have ulterior motives, someone who could be there for him and show him what a friendship was meant to be, and didn't take advantage of him. It wasn't unrequited, he was fond of Jonas in a softhearted way. he was better than he thought..... but Artair couldn't bear the idea of taking away his chances with someone better when he was so kind. Just an all-around good guy, who had it rough and had some things to unlearn and deserved to treat himself more kindly, but a man who deserved true kindness and devotion and to settle down with someone who would make him feel like the center of their universe.

He deserved someone good. And he'd find them, he knew. He had found good friends and he would find someone too. He'd be there to help support him through it all. But no, he couldn't be the one. Nor could he accept that affection when he knew Jonas might base the entirety of his worth on him and his feelings if he did....he'd be on a pedestal he could never measure up to. He'd be people pleased first, and Jonas would lose the chance to grow in an effort to be exactly what Artair thought he wanted him to be.

Jonas should have the chance to learn his boundaries, his wants and needs and that he was worth so much more outside of the constraints of a romance. Within one, it would be all to easy for him to base his value on another person's opinion. To do what he's always done and avoid himself while trying to please someone else. He deserved the chance to be loved outside of what physical things he is capable of. He deserves the right to discover himself with someone at his side who expects nothing.

And besides. It wouldn't be right to drag Jonas into his mess more than he already had. And it wouldn't be right when he knows not everyone in that head of his might be so keen. There were things that needed to be the focus.

It's a complicated mix. But.... he'd love him the best way he knew how. And help him find what he really deserved.
