I found something really funny on the Shantae wiki. An old Shantae twitter account, Shantae_WF, would post Shantae sending notes to Uncle Mimic about her adventures in the first game. The part where Shantae calls Bolo's granny attractive immediately made me think of Kakyoin and Okuyasu from JoJo, so I made a meme about it.

every time I talk about historical context with potc I need to put a disclaimer, but there’s something very haunting about the way Elizabeth’s, Will’s, and James’ personal journeys all coincide with the piracy act (which granted colonial governors the authority to hang pirates on site instead of sending them back to England). how many pirates must have made the Atlantic crossing in the opposite direction before them. how it’s not ultimately law and Englishness and Moral Righteousness that destroys the pirates, but commerce.

I want to point out that this post conflates real learned helplessness (things like AI) with properly compensating workers for their time, effort, and skills (things like streaming). And this is a chronic issue across all social media.

People hold up piracy as if it's some gold standard. As if you're OWED the right to consume someone else's art for free, and therefore piracy is some kind of moral high ground for you to take, take, take whatever you want.

You are not. And piracy is not a moral issue.

It's a selfish issue.

I get it. Streaming platforms keep multiplying and they keep going up in price and they keep enshittifying to make you pay more for the same thing. There's a limit to what someone should be expected to reasonably spend, and region gatekeeping is nonsense.

But don't pretend that theft of someone else's work is morally good, or that it's an answer to some "helplessness" problem.

You aren't owed those things. You can do without them. The people who ARE owed things are the people who created the movies and shows you want to watch. And what they're owed is money from you for the ability to watch them. You'd learn real quick if everyone immediately started pirating everything everywhere that suddenly you'd have nothing to watch because no one would make anything.

Your fundamental ability to pirate anything is built upon the backs of people who actually pay to watch things. Piracy is pure hypocrisy, and it doesn't exist without it, despite your push to have everyone pirate everything. The moment you achieve that goal is the moment piracy ends.

There are definitely reasons to pirate stuff. Draw your lines in terms of how much you're willing to spend on these platforms. Do what you need to do to watch something that they've made artificially inaccessible through the platforms you're willing to pay for.

But you have to recognize that you engage in an inherently selfish act that steals from creators. It's not "moral." It's not "good." It's not even "necessary." It's simply a selfish choice you've made.

And yeah, maybe you're slapping back at the streaming companies while you do it. That doesn't change the nature of the choice, or that everyone else is still paying to let you do it.

You SHOULD do your best to pay creators for things you enjoy, to include buying physical copies. Sometimes you can't, and that's understandable.

I just need people to wake up to the real nature of the things they choose to do. And I say that without judgement. But you need to know that your decision to thieve for yourself takes from creators. We all reach that point sometimes, so it is what it is. Don't pretend that it's something it's not.

Hey, look at me. Look at me. I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again: you need to condition yourself to being okay with being inconvenienced by things. The first time I spoke about this I meant it in a mental health way- it is good to go out to the store and see people versus just ordering alone at home- but there is another more pressing societal issue you should be more concerned about as well.

Any service you rely on for convenience can be weaponized against you the moment you begin to rely on it. Streaming used to be a cheap and convenient way to see movies at home. It is now exorbitantly expensive, you need multiple accounts just to get what you want, and any of those movies can be taken from you at any time. And unless you have gotten used to going through the “inconvenience” of owning physical media, you can do nothing about it. Same goes for buying things on Amazon. Same goes for any service like DoorDash etc. These companies WANT you to be reliant on them for convenience so they can do whatever they want to you because, well, what else are you gonna do?

Same thing goes for the uptick in AI. If you train yourself to become reliant on AI for doing basic things, you will be taken advantage of. It is only a matter of a couple years before there are no free AI services. Not only that, but in the usage of AI’s case, it is robbing you of valuable skills that you need to curate that you will be helpless without the moment the AI companies drive in the knife the way they have done with streaming. Delivery. Cable. Internet. Etc. It will happen to AI too. And if you are not practicing skills such as. Writing. You are not only going to be at the mercy of AI companies in the digital world, but you are going to be extremely easy to take advantage of in real life too.

I am begging you to let go of learned helplessness. I am begging you to stop letting these companies TEACH you helplessness. Do something like learn to pirate. It is way more inconvenient at the beginning, but once you know how, it is one less way companies can take advantage of you. Garden. Go to the thrift store (older clothes hold up better anyway). These things take more time and effort, yes, but using time and effort are muscles you need to stretch to keep yourself from being flattened under the weight of our capitalist hellscape.

Inconvenience yourself. Please. Start with only the ways you are able. Do a little bit at a time. But do something.
