Happy STS! Got any favorite bits of worldbuilding to share?

Hello, Happy STS! :D

Believe it or not, I'm not much of a worldbuilder 😅 this tends to be the reason I don't participate in WBW often, if at all lol.

But I've been working on writing some entries in a leather bound journal my sister got me for my birthday. So far I haven't written in it a ton, but I'm super excited to add to it! Here's an entry for my original WIP, Paragon, written as if it was by the leader of the team, Nate :)

🔪 - Genre swap! Your characters are in a horror movie! How does it go? Who dies first, and who (or what) is the killer?

(this is going off of BE, which is a what started as a retelling of sleeping beauty story but kinda. went out of hand. and i may need to rename one of the MCs. anyway-)

briar and felize would be first suspected, foreign dignitaries of a former warring nation and all, but it wouldn't be either of them. briar would be first to figure it out, probably, since she's literally a soul mage haha. nobody would listen to her though

lucas would be the next to puzzle it out for sure, esp since in the original he's probably the first to figure out briar's curse so it only makes sense. but also he's probably an abysmal fighter, so i'd expect him to die pretty quickly

really hard to say who the killer would be, though. mostly bc it's such a character driven story and i haven't devloped the antagonist yet lmao. bc of that it's hard to say who dies first. but like i said, lucas is def up there, he's way too smart and honestly probably would be pretty easy to kill if you don't try and confront him in the conservatory (where he's got almost every advantage).

Friendship that goes beyond the surface

Love of all kinds – friendship, romantic, family, pets

Swearing – some characters more than others.  There are a few that use “fuck” as a comma at times

Protectiveness to the point of violence when needed.  Many of the characters are warriors and if those they care about are threatened, they have no problem unleashing great pain on those who threaten their loved ones.

Conflict – with others and within themselves.  None of my characters stay the same.  They are ever evolving, and to do that, they must have conflict of some form.

💀 - Is anyone afraid of Death?

Abriella - yes and no. She does not fear death, she fears what dying would do to Cruz. I have a near death scene for her, Abbadon left her on a realm that required a great deal of power to get into/out of; and she had to use all of her energy to get Adriel, Dez, Mithos and herself back to Imperium. She was slipping into stasis, kind of like an eternal supernatural coma. Writing it had me sobbing, not for her...for Cruz.

Cruz - he does not fear his own death. He fears others dying because of his inability to save them. He has always been strong and fast, able to take damage without being near death.

Deacon - Deacon’s father is literally the Angel of Death. So, no. And...anyone trying to kill him has never got close. Yeah, talk about protection by Daddy!!

Olly - He doesn't fear it but is in no hurry to meet it. He's been a warrior who has never held back in battle. He's been seriously wounded many times but healers have always brought him back.

Dez - He's literally been dead and DOES NOT want to do it again. He spent time in what is now Caligo before the Source put him in a real and prepared him for the calling of the Horsemen and Abbadon. Death was NOT pleasant the first time. 0/10, does not recommend.

Talon - Has a healthy respect for death. He's a demi-god so not really afraid of it. He's lost friends though and tries to prevent losing more.

Anna - She does not fear death but has a passionate fire of vengeance in her soul to find the ones who murdered her children. If Adriel, himself, showed up to try to take her, he'd have a fight. She survived that night and until there is retribution, she will not rest in the afterlife.

Yael - There isn't much she's not afraid of, but death isn't one of those things. Death would be a release from all she endured and the pain and nightmares that still plague her.

These are the ones that have specific things to include. Otherwise we'd be here a while. 😉

I hope its ok to send asks, but for some reason i don't quite think the op of the xymox and painsmith post is coming to the discussion in good faith. They just seem needlessly mean about it. for some reason ppl find it hard to get their head around the fact that not everyone likes conventionally attractive characters. I really am not a fan of such dunking on people over fictional characters paraded around as humor. Especially ones that barely have any content as is.

Like yeah xymox is a bit out of there, but there's a lot of people who like robots like A LOT.

So I’m not the OP of that post, and I’m also terrible at reading context and intentions. All I can say is I for one didn’t take it as demeaning, just funny and I certainly hope my comments didn’t sound demeaning to anyone who finds either of those beings attractive. I knew the Painsmith had stans, but Xymox was a new one on me.

But I will also say that as someone who is almost always in the same boat of “finding the random dude with no art attached to them attractive” I feel the pain of that situation. I’ve spent many a sleepless night trolling the far corners of the internet for Grandmaster Vole art and was sadly disappointed 😂

Renathal, hovering restlessly by the door, did his best to swallow his rising panic. If she was truly ended, surely the healers would display more concern?

As it was, the Sin'Dorei was pulling several large books from his bag and laying them on the bedside table one at a time, while the other, smaller creature hoisted itself onto the bed and sat comfortably on the edge. It hadn't stopped talking the entire way to the room, a fact the other healer endured with an expression of longsuffering. Neither seemed in any rush to even glance at the Maw Walker’s unnaturally still figure.

After minutes that stretched like eternity, Renathal could contain himself no longer.

‘I certainly don't mean to tell you how to do your work, but...  do you intend to heal her anytime soon?’

Fellowship of the Ring- This is number one.

Jurassic Park

Raiders of the Lost Arc - a perfect adventure

Metropolis - I love Lang's work, and this is a great example of early science fiction in the cinema

Galaxy Quest- a perfect comedy and a great Star Trek movie. This might be the only example of the 'liar revealed plot' that I like.

Silence of the Lambs- masterpiece of acting, cinematography and directing. Also weirdly quotable.

VanHelsing- I just like this movie ok?

Bram Stoker's Dracula- also a great visual effects movie, and one that will always look good because everything is done in camera. Great costumes, score & Gary Oldman is hot

The Mummy- also a perfect adventure- except this time the mummy is hot

Emperor's New Groove- it's disney's funniest (animated) movie & it might also be a perfect comedy.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit- it tells the story of how LA's public transportation system was dismantled by big corporations. unlike real life, this has a happy ending! Hello! Thank you for the ask! I appreciate any and all questions, even if you're not familiar with my specific stories/characters 😊

Home library: What kind of reader is your character? What are their favorite books?

I'm going to answer this one for Nate. He's an avid reader, he loves books. He has a select collection of his absolute favorites on a small shelf in his room, but he's constantly buying/checking out new books.

His favorites are all dystopian sci fi books. He loves connecting the dots and seeing how authors just recognized patterns to create an exaggerated version of a real problem. They are a big influence on his worldview and personal values :)

This ask motivated me to write 149 words for Home is Where Your Light Shines Brightest.

⚰ - Funeral righta & who has attended them

Nephilim burn their dead on large funeral pyres.  This comes from the line - Genesis 3:19. “Dust you are and to dust you will return.”   They have a very formal ceremony with a speech given by the commander of the Nephilim who had led them into the battle where they perished.  This was demonstrated in the Demonic Pixie story I posted.

The Fallen Angels wrap their dead in muslin and take the corpse to the river Styxx.  They are put in a canoe which is then set aflame and set afloat in the flow of the river.

Fae, Pixies, Gnomes, and other forest beings do different rituals where the body is wrapped in some form of cloth and buried.  It is believed that the soul of the being then becomes part of the nature of the place that they are being and lives on in the life of the plants around them.  When they speak of the spirits of nature, they are speaking of those who have passed on into eternity.

Demons, which are separate entities from Fallen Angels, eat their dead.  It is believed in this way they absorb the life force of their dead.  This is done in a very reverent and solemn way.  There is no talking, and sometimes it is done in total darkness, the passing being honored and the life lost being respected.

Trolls and Goblins are very secretive about their rituals, so little is known.  Anyone who draws near their encampment during mourning is attacked, and often killed.

Dragons take to air and form a flying circle with the body of their fallen in the center on the earth.  Then they all release flame and incinerate the fallen.  Once the body has been rendered to ash, there is a song that is sung in dragon tongue of mourning as they continue to fly in honor of the one they have lost.

All of the Horsemen, Dez, Talon and all of the Angels have attended Nephilim funeral rights.

The Fallen and Demons have attended each other's, while not necessarily being active participants.

Kellen, Grae, Korben, Karlen, Persephone and Calliope all attended rights for their parents and each others parents.

8. Archive of Our Own, FanFiction.net, Wattpad, Tumblr, etc. which platform do you prefer?
I’m also old enough to predate Ao3, and I waited a long time to make the switch over, but FF.net is just too bad now. I do like Tumblr for the engagement (long live live journal though)

15. How many WIPs will you finish?
well prescience is not my gift so I can’t know 😂 I have a deep seated fear of commitment so I can only make myself my current WIP. Everything after that is 🤷🏻‍♀️

30. What writing software do you use? 
just Evernote, which I swear by and could do a sales pitch for (but I won’t 😅)

5. What fanfic of yours should everyone have read
honestly, I don’t think anything I’ve written is just so spectacular that anyone outside the fandom should have to read it. If you like Renathal and you like romance, I would feel comfortable recommending my work (start with Taking the Tremaculum and work your way through, skipping anything you’re not into) but probably not otherwise.

7. What is a ship you will never write for?
I will never ship Renathal/Denathrius. I don’t touch anything that looks anything like incest even if you have to squint to see it. Not judging people who like that pairing, it’s just not me.

47. What fanfic of yours is truly underrated?
I’m just not a good judge of this at all. All my stories feel like my babies, and like babies, I recognise I probably love them a lot more than anyone else ever will, and it’s also hard for me to pick one over another. I keep a skin on Ao3 that hides my hits/kudos from me so I never have to see if one is more liked than another 😂
