Summary: The summer is always the best time to sit back and enjoy the sounds of nature on a horse back ride, especially when it's with you by his side.

Word Count: 1,800+

The trot of horses on an old path was a welcome one as the trees covered the sky above, blocking out the beaming sun in a canopy of the most vibrant greens. Birds singing in tune with a stream nearby, one you know well from your many times running to it as the heat got the best of you just to kick at the waters for the chance of being splashed with a refreshing cool.

Fortunately enough, today wasn't unbearable. Hot, still, but that's nothing new.

“What's with ya and always takin’ it slow, princess?” A voice called out to you, trying to distract you from the task at hand. That being: getting used to riding a horse in the first place.

Your teacher for…well..the mare you were currently on top of.

“Cmon girl, I swear I taught you how to gallop by now. Less ya scared?” A snort came from him, unlike the ones the horses huff out after being ordered to go into a different direction than the one they wanted.

Stubborn creatures they were, but your teacher had assured you the one you were riding on, Crafty, was the least stubborn of the bunch. A ‘tamed lass’ or something along those lines. At least that's what he claims, but you've personally experienced being bucked off before.

It was unpleasant, to say the least. The moment you hit the rough patch of dirt, grass tickling your skin, you were unable to breathe despite your attempts to gasp for air. Quite literally knocked out of you as you choked on the spot. Your body refused to fill your lungs.

Now, you had never been much of a smoker but in that moment you would have gladly taken a puff from a spit covered end if it meant getting what you longed for.

It was only when you were breathing again that you noticed a certain someone (a complete prick) was standing above you holding Crafty's reins in hand and laughing.

“Well, it was bound to happen ‘ventually.”

Those words made you want to punch him as your teacher leaned down, hand taking your own, and helped you up.

Afterward, you immediately ran off to shower. The need for a break and a good wash far too tempting to resist after getting knocked off your ass.

Since then you had been dubbed-

“Princess?”

That.

You glanced over at him, despite knowing you should keep your eyes forward lest Crafty follows the direction you're gazing at, to catch the sight of his black and white hair thrown up in a messy ponytail. Hat, as always, perched right on top of his head.

“Everytime you call me that, I want to call you Cruella De Vil.”

Your teacher awwed at your words, cooing the harsh tone in your voice. “You wanna give me a nickname now? I didn't know we were at tha’ stage in our relationship yet.”

“We are in nothing close to a relationship.” You snapped.

“Wowy pardner, way to-” You glared at him, waiting for your teacher (Cruella) to dare and even try to finish his sentence when you both knew he was going to attempt to say something along the lines of ‘shit on my parade’- “rain on my parade.”

“Yeah, that's totally what you were going to say.”

“Obviously.” He said, drawing out they ‘ly’ the same way you would when mocking how a country singer says the word whiskey.

You found yourself going “uhuh,” nodding in agreement just to get him off your back. Shame it didn't work as well as you wanted it to as Cruella over there kept jabbering. Stuffing your ears full of words like a tamale.

“Ya know, if it gets any hotter I'm sure we could fry an egg just by puttin’ it on a rock to sizzle up real nice. Would you like that, princess, me cooking you up a meal? Maybe we can have a beer or two to top it-”

Eventually, you found your legs squeezing the horse below you, signaling her to pick up the speed. Your hips meeting the same beat hers did as she ran, just like you were taught.

it's easier that way, apparently. Puts less stress on your body.

Hoofs beating against the well-worn path, but your teacher was far more comfortable going at a faster pace, making him catch up with you easily as he whistled at the horse to slow down. Her legs were already betraying you as they moved back into a slow trot all the way to a stop. Crafty staring back at you like she was expecting you to give her a treat for the treacherous behavior.

Well, she was certainly well trained, at least. Maybe he did have a point in saying Crafty was a tamed lass.

“Tryin' to run from me now?” He asked, laughter in his voice even as your teacher clicked his tongue disapprovingly.

“You were the one complaining about us going too slow earlier.”

“Huh? Can't seem to recall that.” Reaching over, he took the reins from your hands, slipping them as easily from your gasp as any trained pickpocket might. “Mind getting off ol Crafty here so we can talk?”

“I'd rather not.”

“Course not. Real shame you're always so stubborn.” If he wasn't so close, you might have missed the part your teacher whispered about how he should have expected you to be harder to deal with than a newborn foal.

Yeah, fuck you too cowboy.

Running a hand over Crafty's neck, you couldn't help but cringe slightly at the feeling of her fur being so coarse. You'd have to remember to brush them down after cleaning out their hoofs. Something you like to do before and after every ride. After all, they deserve it for carrying you around like this.

“I don't know how you put up with Cruella over here.” You say to her. “Not when I'd never know when he's planning to turn my hide into a hat.”

Your teacher barked out a laugh as he picked his hat off his head, waving it slightly in front of your eyes so you could get a proper view of it. “It's not even made out of horse hide, ya see?”

“Yet.”

“Yet.” He repeated with a raised brow.

“Yeah, I'll give it until Crafty's leg finally gives out.”

The last thing you saw before your vision was covered was your teacher rolling his eyes right before he placed that dusty hat on your head. If you remember correctly, didn't that mean something like you were his girl or….

Ah.

Ah!

With a face as hot as the blazing sun shining down on you two, right in the midst of summer, no less, you shoved the hat back towards him. “That's sweaty and gross! I don't want it!”

Laughter caught on the wind as he took it back, holding it to his chest as your teacher pouted.

“Ya wound me. Here, a simple cowboy is offering you something to block out that blasted sun, and you don't even make use of it?”

“I can manage just fine without it.” You hissed.

“You have also been riding with narrowed eyes this entire time, princess. It kinda gives you away.”

“I said,” taking the reins from his hands you pulled them back into your grasp, careful not to accidentally kick Crafty up by startling her, “I'm fine.”

Turning around on the path you both had been riding down, you were met with the sight of the lush greenery you two had passed and two sets of horseshoe prints littering the ground.

“And I'm heading back.”

“All on your own? Didn't know you could handle that by yourself.”

“Yes, on my own, cowboy.” You said with a firm nod. “I'll fill the hay and everything so there's no need to worry about it.”

Even if it meant getting that blasted stuff in your bra. It always had a way of sneaking in there despite your best efforts and highest collar shirts.

“All covered then, eh?” He asked as Crafty nickered underneath you.

This time you didn't grace him with a response as you made your way down the path, the sound of the bird chirping and Crafty's tail trying to wack any bugs away from her your only company as your teacher watched you go.

“She's so stubborn, ain't she?” He found himself asking. Though the grin on his face was a clear indication that the thick headed nature of yours wasn't exactly minded.

“Guess I gotta try harder to build up a romantic mood to confess next time. I'll get her to listen for sure. I just need a bit of time.”

In return, your teacher was met with the huff of the horse he was sitting on as his hand moved up to block the sun in his eyes.

Back then his hand was flesh and blood.

But now?

His metal hand was blocking out the full moon, bright as it could be as he gazed up at the stars reflected on the aluminum coated surface he was still learning to get used to. The way they moved was nothing like real fingers that would hurt at the slightest papercut.

He would always stick the hurt finger in his mouth and say that would do the trick even as the little miss royal ass would insist he wash off.

Soap and water.

He needed a bath, or at least his hair needed to be washed off. The rest of him maybe needed a shining? Maybe a good wipe and oil capped off?

Boothill dropped his hand, letting it fall to his side as he looked back up at the sky.

If he closed his eyes right now, could he pretend it was sunny as can be? That the leafs above and Boothill’s hat were the only thing keeping his eyes from being blinded, that there was a stream right down the way he could hear just as clearly as the trot of two horses side by side?

Could he, just maybe, hear your voice?

Yet all he heard was his own breathing that was…altered in a way. Affected, just like the rest of him the moment he took on this hunk of a junk body.

It was agonizing to wake up from such a peaceful dream. One he wanted to go back to despite it long since having burnt to ash. Crumpled between warm fingers that had once touched your hand, now gone like the rest of him.

Grabbing his hat, Boothill got up where he was standing, trying his best to once again walk away from your memory. The same way he did as Boothill realized he had to flee that fateful day without erecting some sort of monument for everyone in their honor.

The Subtle British Pop Culture/Timeline In CHICKEN RUN

On occasion, I've pointed out when the original CHICKEN RUN is set.

It's often been written that CHICKEN RUN was "set in the '50s", a sort of vague descriptor of its rather dreary post-war England setting. One could assume that from the technology present in the movie, and the homages to 1950s prisoner-of-war films. The obvious ones being STALAG 17 (the number 17 is on the main hut that the chickens all plot in) and THE GREAT ESCAPE. The character Fowler was of the mascot division of the Royal Air Force during World War II. All that talk about his medals. Chocks away!

The easiest way to pinpoint when CHICKEN RUN is set, at the earliest, is knowing what the songs are.

The chickens, in a hut, dance to a cover of Joe Turner's 'Flip, Flop and Fly', Turner's original was released in 1955, an early example of a rock n' roll song. Britain certainly had rock n' roll in a pre-Beatles era, but it doesn't seem as well-known to the average American as American rockers - you know, Elvis, Little Richard, etc. - are to Brits.

Later in the film, Rocky the rooster is jamming out to 'The Wanderer' by Dion.

The song first appeared in North America in November of 1961 - both as a single and as an album track on RUNAROUND SUE (the title track another big hit for him), and if you look in the opening credits sequence, Mrs. Tweedy works with a calendar that says "November"... However, 'The Wanderer' was first released in the UK in January of 1962. And it doesn't seem like much time has passed since the opening credits and the end of the movie...

'The Wanderer' reached #10 in the UK, which was great for an American rock/pop song over there... If anything, the movie is likely set in November/December 1962, so that was plenty of time for 'The Wanderer' to climb the charts, and then be played on the radio every once in a while. Things took a little while in a pre-streaming age, ya know? *waves cane* *I'm actually not that old, nowhere near lol I just love this kinda pop culture history*

So CHICKEN RUN is still kind of a post-war/pre-Beatles England, and it's set in a secluded location inhabited by a middle-aged couple who likely wouldn't have had any idea what was going in the teen beat scene. The Beatles' 'Love Me Do', the single that really put them on the map in the UK, was released in early October of 1962. Being their first true single (not the 'My Bonnie' recording they did in Germany with Tony Sheridan), it charted at a great #17 in the UK... Which of course was nothing compared to what was to come, the strings of #1s, or at least close to that. 'Please Please Me' was the second single, released in January 1963, it hit #2 in the UK. Beatlemania pretty much becomes a thing in the UK by the middle of 1963... It would take a little while for us yanks to catch the fever...

Anyways, CHICKEN RUN is set in November/December 1962. Or maybe it's 1963, who knows, but I think it's pre-Beatlemania rural England. Yorkshire to be exact.

It's kinda funny how the Disney animated ONE HUNDRED AND ONE DALMATIANS shares some similarities in this regard. That film was released in January 1961, and is set in both London and rural England. Its second half during the late fall/early winter no less. The puppies arrive in October, as stated in the film, and the film ends during Christmastime. Snow everywhere, dreary atmosphere, etc.... And then you have the Tweedys in CHICKEN RUN. Mrs. Tweedy is kind of a combination of Cruella de Vil *and* Jasper. She's got the contempt for animals like Cruella, and is taller and the brains like Jasper. Horace, the shorter, pudgier one in the equation - who is onto what the animals are doing but isn't believed, is totally Mr. Tweedy.

That brings us to the recently-released CHICKEN RUN: DAWN OF THE NUGGET... The sequel swaps prisoner-of-war movies and World War II imagery for James Bond and MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE. Spy movies in general.

One look at Mrs. Tweedy's high-tech new factory shows that in *spades*. But the folks at Aardman Animations did their homework, a lot of the details and background design and such, it legitimately looks like the lair of a supervillain in a '60s spy movie. Much like how Nomanisan Island does in THE INCREDIBLES, another very midcentury modern-inspired movie and franchise. There's also that charming UPA-esque cartoon on how the chickens are processed into nuggets, great stuff there. I also kind of get a bit of a Gerry Anderson vibe here, too. He was known for marionette shows - done in a process called "Supermarionation" - like THUNDERBIRDS and CAPTAIN SCARLET AND THE MYSTERONS. I assume most of the crew behind these movies grew up watching those shows.

And of course, a big indicator... Towards the end of the film, all the chickens - brainwashed by mind-control collars that make them all happy-go-lucky - are being forced up an escalator to a popcorn chicken death. In this pretty creepy sequence, they're all doing this while Cliff Richard's 'Summer Holiday' plays in the background. The bright, pastel-colored set adorned with simplistic countryside-looking hills that these chickens are brainwashed in before they are to be ground into fast food is reminiscent of vintage British and European children's programs. I was thinking of stuff like THE MAGIC ROUNDABOUT and such, which was also a stop-motion production.

Oh yeah, 'Summer Holiday'. That song came out in January 1963, it was the title song for a movie that was *huge* in England when it first came out. Cliff Richard is the prime example of a pre-Beatles British pop/rock star, I feel he's almost synonymous with that period of British pop music before John, Paul, George, and Ringo showed up. So, CHICKEN RUN 2 is set *after* January 1963. Plus, Ginger and Rocky's daughter Molly needed some time to grow up a bit.

Either this was intentional or not, but it strangely adds up. It's pretty chronological, either by accident or they made sure they didn't have too many anachronisms... Other than the cartoonishly high tech of Mrs. Tweedy's Fun-Land Farms, but then again, the pie machine in the original CHICKEN RUN was kind of improbable too. But that's the fun of the CHICKEN RUN movies, so it's a staple.

And even in other Aardman works, there are fun nods to British pop culture and media. For example, in WALLACE & GROMIT: THE CURSE OF THE WERE-RABBIT, Art Garfunkel's 'Bright Eyes' can be heard on the car radio in one scene. Garfunkel is American, yes, but 'Bright Eyes' was composed and recorded for the soundtrack of the British animated classic WATERSHIP DOWN. Just in case you've never seen or even heard of that movie. WATERSHIP DOWN is about rabbits, and in the WALLACE & GROMIT movie, they're dealing with rabbits! Quite clever.

Another favorite of mine is in FARMAGEDDON: A SHAUN THE SHEEP MOVIE. Of course, Shaun the Sheep is spun off from WALLACE & GROMIT, he appeared in the short film A CLOSE SHAVE. The second SHAUN THE SHEEP movie brings in science fiction and aliens, a real 180 from the small-scale first film. At the end of the film, the Farmer accidentally gets onto the UFO and is not on Earth anymore! Before they get him back, a song called 'Forever Autumn' can be heard playing on a radio.

'Forever Autumn' is a rewrite of a Lego commercial jingle composed by Jeff Wayne in 1969, with lyrics by Gary Osborne and Paul Vigrass. The two lyricists recorded the first version of that song in 1972 for an album called QUEUES. A couple years later, Jeff Wayne got the idea to do a musical version of H. G. Wells' THE WAR OF THE WORLDS. A musical album, bringing in several mostly British talents to retell - through story and song - the British sci-fi staple. 'Forever Autumn' was covered for the album, with lead vocals sung by Justin Hayward of The Moody Blues. Of course, another British group... all for the section of the album in which the protagonist - a journalist - fears his wife had been killed in the Martian invasion. "'Cause you're not here." Which is the lyric heard in FARMAGEDDON when they realize that the Farmer went to outer space!

(It takes a special kind of skill to take such a depressing song and make it FUNNY in any context.)

Anyways, those are just a couple examples off the top of my head. Aardman's work is distinctly British, to the core. And the CHICKEN RUN movies give me a fascinating idea of when they are set, a very cartoon British '60s.

The whole situation with Kylie Cantrall and Freya Skye makes me so sad and angry on their behalf. They were both proudly proclaiming their upcoming music were covers until about a week ago when the Jojo Siwa/karma drama came out and Disney decided to not mention that the songs were covers anymore in an attempt to get the same reaction (cause I guess they thought any publicity is good publicity?) then add it back once they got the reaction they wanted. Good on Kylie for not taking that bullshit but I’m so scared for Freya cause she’s just starting out and right off the bat THIS is what the people who are supposed to be building her career do? And the public has known about Disney’s control over their artists for a while now so for people to fall for this and blame Kylie and Freya makes me even angrier. These poor girls deserve so much better.

The internet, tv, and wifi quality are all largely improved by Carlos’ invention (that also unintentionally punched a hole in the barrier briefly but who cares about that) and because of that many isle kids become influencers.

Including little eleven year old Hannah Hook who thinks others will find her life as entertaining as she does.

So starts making Royal Media accounts.

She becomes hannahhook7744 on Royallr, InstaRoyal, ZapChat, and just Hannah Hook on GraceBook.

She creates a Geniemail and makes fanfiction of all her favorite shows on Ro3 under the name ‘Slimeypirate’ after getting a nasty comment with the insult on one of her RoyalTube videos (in which she posts vidoes under the account names ‘Hannah Hook’ and ‘The Stormbringer Crew’).

And She just has fun with it because Hannah has nothing better to do.

And neither do her crew and family.

Hannah does anything and everything she can think of to keep her and others entertained.

She pranks the Coachmen, Judge Frollo, Mother Gothel, Cruella de Vil, Gaston, and even Maleficent.

She plays her favorite game ‘Piss off the Villain’ on camera and narrowly avoids getting shot on camera.

She plays all kinds of different games, does reactions, makes roasts, makes theories, and reads all her favorite books. Shows people how to go on an adventure and how to take care of little kids and even attempts cooking (as her friends beg her not to in the background).

Hannah even plays with fire and does circus tricks (which Hermie Bing joins her for).

Oh and she’s gotten into fights with her siblings on camera.

There’s even a live stream on her channel where she’s blasting one of the bad apples songs as she plays ‘Carriage Crush’ with a green toddler she calls ‘Harley’ in her lap and as her dad and uncle Jasper have a three hour long (violent) fight in the background until her grandmother breaks it up.

And another one where she and Luke play ‘Storm the Castle’ (with two toddlers in their laps) as Hans Westergaard, The Stabbington Brothers, Lady Caine, Stalyan, Brock Thunderstrike, Anastasia Tremaine, and Drizella Tremaine all argue (loudly) with Lady Tremaine in the other room.

While the other Tremaine and Stabbington kids (minus the youngest four Tremaines who are in the room with them) fight upstairs.

And another (24 hour) live stream where Hades is asleep in the background the entire time.

Even as Treycor and Alex throw knives at each other and Luke.

All posted on school nights/days.

And they have several videos where they're in the various restaurants of the isle. Eating food that wouldn't be up to code in Auradon.

Making food that wouldn't be up to code that they also eat.

And they even get tattoos once at 12 years old. After officiating a wedding.

Auradon is more than a little concerned.

And the isle kids are all just confused as they keep doing what they're doing.

Doing death defying stunts and games.

Summoning things (and screaming in fright when Hades walks into the room to ask them to stop).

Swimming and wrestling with crocodiles, Tigers, and sharks.

Giving the Auradon adults heartattacks in the process.

Whumptober2022 fic: “(Hold Onto Me) I’m a Little Unsteady”

 No. 7 /// Shaking Hands

Okay, so I meant to have this up nearly a week ago, but better late than never, I guess?? It’s my second offering for the @whumptober2022 prompts, though I might have given it up, but I think both @kmomof4 and @jrob64 might have skinned me alive if I left my last Whumptober prompt fill without continuation.  This one carries on from where my No. 3 /// Gun to Temple prompt left off, so we’re still in an alternate version of the Underworld arc where Emma and Killian have encountered a vengeful Cruella on their quest for the ambrosia.  (Hopefully this will make up for my misguided attempt to be darker and only do the whump and angst without the appeasing ending last time around! ;p)

“(Hold Onto Me) I’m A Little Unsteady”

For several long, excruciating moments, Emma cannot blink, cannot speak, cannot bring herself to move. She watches, frozen, as her True Love shudders with the bullet’s impact, then folds in on himself, instinctively shielding the injury, a reflex for self-protection coming too late. He falls slowly to his knees, crumpling in slow motion as she stares helpless - watching her whole world fall apart with him.

Suddenly, it doesn’t matter that her adversary has a gun, that her magic hasn’t been working sine they arrived in this scarlet-tinted nightmare, that the ambrosia will do no good now, or what happens to the rest of them next. All she can feel is the wave of rage and devastation that swells inside her until it has to explode outward. Whirling with the raw, heartbroken scream of a banshee, her arm shoots out unbidden, forming a fist as it flies, and connecting with Cruella’s jaw mercilessly. She hasn’t thrown a punch like that since she was fighting for food to eat on the streets of Portland, but it seems the swift right hook she gained there has not been lost. The vicious specter of a grand dame hits the ground hard, out cold with the gun still smoking in her loosened grip, its damage already done.

For a second, dazed, tears streaming silently down her face, Emma can do little more than drag in one ragged breath after another. She wants to howl at the injustice and fall to her knees, seeing how quickly it all could have been over if she had acted sooner.

Heaving one more large breath into her lungs, she turns, eyes seeking Killian where he has slumped over, lying motionless. He is never completely still - eyebrow arching deviously, corners of his mouth twitching upwards in a playful smirk, graceful fingers tapping some internal rhythm only he hears or rubbing unconsciously against each other. Even in sleep, he rolls from side to side, turns to snuggle her closer to himself, eyelids twitching as he dreams. She can’t bear to see him just lying there as she finally stumbles the few steps forward to reach him and collapses at his side.

She watches her own shaking hands resting over his stomach as if they belong to someone else. As if she is seeing a stranger from a distance, she scrambles to roll her pirate from his side where he had fallen over to his back, hoping to find something - anything - she can do for him. He still doesn’t respond, and she notes vaguely that it is not only her hands trembling wildly, but her whole body, cut adrift and wobbling helplessly like a ship unmoored on waves about to swallow her whole. She isn’t sure how so much blood could have pumped from within him to spill down his torso onto her hands, to puddle sickeningly around them, when his heart isn’t beating to drive it, but it has happened all the same. Biting her lip and trying to hold back the sobs that threaten to overwhelm her, Emma cannot afford to fall apart if there is anything she can still do to save Killian.

Putting pressure on the wound, she tries to staunch the flow of blood from him even as she reaches to search for a pulse. Would he have a pulse anyway? Emma has struggled to find hope throughout her adult life, didn’t have any cause to nurture it until Henry, and then Killian, proved to her there was reason to believe, that there was hope in the world. She hadn’t often prayed either, but she’s doing so now, begging over and over again, ‘....please…please…just… don’t take him from me…don’t let him be gone…’

Then, suddenly, as out of nowhere as real magic had burst full force into her life, Killian gasps, sucking in a huge breath, and seeming to shock back into awareness. His eyes fly open as he starts to shoot upwards in surprise, only to fall back against her with a groan at the pain in his torso. His gaze flies wildly from her face, to the room around them, to Cruella’s unconscious form where she feel, and back to meet Emma’s eyes adoringly, not even sparing a glimpse at his own injury, where her hands still fumble to hold pressure - though she can feel the flow is lessening. Is that good or bad? It’s hard to tell in this strange other world where it would seem a person could be shot and bleed, even while already dead, and yet somehow come bursting back to life again - or what passes for it at the moment anyway.

It’s dizzying. Emma actually feels her head whirl, and she has to close her eyes for a moment, suck in a breath and regain her equilibrium.  Of course, that’s when she feels his rough-calloused palm cup her cheek and his voice breathlessly murmur, “You bested her, Love. It’s over now.”

His pride and continued praise despite her feeling she nearly cost him everything is more than she can withstand. Despite her best efforts to hold on, Emma’s lower lip wobbles and her eyes tear up and spill over, rivulets streaming down her face and soaking his fingers as he still cradles her cheek and strokes his thumb over her flushed skin. “But it so nearly wasn’t,” she manages brokenly. 

“Now, now, Darling,” he practically croons, straightening, and - against all logical odds - with each minute seeming more fully recovered than should be possible. Killian gently takes each trembling finger of her shaking hand and kisses them one by one, whispering assurances. “Apparently one cannot do much lasting damage to a person who is already dead.”

His rather bleak jest sets her to senselessly laughing with a strange snort and more tears falling at the same time. Shaking her head, Emma can only squeeze his hand as it holds hers and let her head lean forward to rest against his, trying to simply breathe him in. ‘He’s still here’ and let her heart regain its regular beat.

“Haven’t I told you before, Swan?” he asks, playfully nudging her nose with his in a gentle caress. “If there’s one thing I’m good at, you should know by now it’s surviving.”

He pulls her almost completely into his lap as they sit tangled up in each other in the midst of the strange half-light of the Underworld, if nothing else knowing they are still together. And at feeling the strength still in his arms as he holds her, Emma’s shaking can finally cease.

The Little Mermaid (2023)

"The youngest of King Triton's daughters, Ariel, is a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. Longing to find out more about the world beyond the sea, Ariel visits the surface and falls for the dashing Prince Eric. Following her heart, she makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, to experience life on land."

While I do enjoy a good Disney film, and I do regularly use their streaming service, I am far from a huge Disney fan. I find theirs, and others, needs for constant remakes or reboots irritating. Yet something about this one intrigued me from the get go. I can't remember when I last watch the animated version, and it's been well over 30 years since I read the original story. Yet here I was, happily sat front row for the Mouse's newest 'life-action' offering.

Up to this point, the live action remakes/reboots from the company have been spotty. Other than Cruella (and even that was close), I haven't enjoyed the remakes. I have just found them poorly made, badly written, or just NOT live action, Lion King I'm looking at you here....it was just differently animated. It wasn't 'live-action'. With this film though the House of Mouse may have bucked the trend.

With four perfectly cast actors in the main roles of Ariel, Triton, Eric, and Ursula, they have given us a live action adaptation that pays homage to the original yet feels fresh at the same time. It isn't a full shot for shot remake but when it was it was delightful and spoke perfectly to my inner child. The scene on the rock with the wave crashing behind Ariel legitimately had me giddily clapping my hands. Throughout the film there were several moments that sent a ripple of laughter through the audience, and at the end a good portion of the viewers were clapping. It is an entrancing movie that will reignite a sense of childlike wonder in your head, even if only while in the cinema.

Halle Bailey, as Ariel, was exquisite. Her voice is so beautiful, and the changes made to some of the songs she sang were smooth and fitted the film perfectly. Her Ariel was a strong yet naive young woman, and she was fabulous in a role that is so iconic to so many people. I really enjoyed her performance, and I look forward to whatever she does next.

Now I need to be honest here....when I first heard that Melissa Mccarthy was going to be in this film as Ursula, I was disappointed. I don't like her. I genuinely cannot think of a film of hers that I have sat through and enjoyed. She'll never read this, but I'd like to apologise to her now. I was wrong. You were perfectly cast as the vile sea witch, and I don't say that to be mean or sarcastic. She brought out the malevolence of one of the most putrid Disney villains in a perfect way that I just did not expect. She was brilliant, and her version of Poor Unfortunate Souls was perfectly pitched to highlight the two-faced vindictive nature of the character while still trying hard to elicit a little sympathy. It didn't work Melissa you were horrible. Thank you.

Eric, played by Jonah Hauer-King, could have been played by Harry Styles, and I have to thank the casting director for NOT doing that. Hauer-King's Prince is a man of the people that is loved and respected, as well as a man out of place looking for his own direction. It was a delightful performance and easily the most believable of the main four. As for King Triton? The big fish of the seas, the king of the underwater folks, and a tough grumpy fella with a little nugget of gold in his heart? I honestly cannot think of anyone else that would have fit it as well as Javier Bardem. Bravo, sir....

But it's not all seashells and shiny rocks. Some of the CGI was lacking, in design as well as quality.....to me at least. I totally understand why Flounder and Sebastian couldn't look like they did in the animation. They were going for a more realistic vibe, and that's great, but the artistic choices for these characters were not well made. I definitely think they could have put more effort, or thought, into them. The worst CGI 'culprit' for me was Ursula in her giant final form. It just didn't look good and, while it didn't pull me out of the story, it certainly didn't add any more depth to the big climactic scene.

Overall, this is a really solid release from Disney and, again for me, easily the best live action adaptation of an animated classic. It has its issues, but it's a decent movie that I genuinely found myself enjoying immensely. It's getting a solid 7/10 with a recommendation to everyone to give it a go. Hopefully Disney have turned a corner with these adaptations, but let's see what they do with the angry blue alien...

A Tour To Live Forever: Perelandra, Valoria, Calamity, Dance In Disarray & Fractured Fortune Live @ The Montage Music Hall

Perelandra has announced they will go on tour for a few select dates. They will be supported by Valoria, Gone Cold (on select dates), Calamity, Fractured Fortune, and Dance In Disarray. This is a special show for Perelandra and their guests in their hometown. The Montage Music Hall slowly filled up with many friends and family members of the bands, anticipating their performance. Just seeing the love thrown around the place before the show even started was a great thing to witness.

Dance In Disarray is a 4-piece metalcore band from Rochester, NY. The band released their very first EP Vestiges last year after releasing 2 singles titled “Codependency” & “Within Reason.” I couldn’t find much history on the band since they are still new to the scene, but let us see what they have to offer on stage. The band opened the show with a bang, performing newer singles like "Codependency." Each song they played brought an electric energy, getting the fans pumped for what was coming up next. Personally, I loved the dynamic vocal changes and the powerful bass that really made the set stand out.

Fractured Fortune is a rising force in the world of metalcore music. Comprising of five talented musicians, Andrew, Damon, Kevin, Zach & Dante. This dynamic band is making waves with its unique sound and captivating performances. With a collection of powerful singles such as “Malevolence” & “Cruella de Vil” & an impressive EP, Fractured Fortune is steadily carving its path to success in the music industry. These guys showed up ready to play, this was my first time seeing my friends in Fractured Fortune play live. Singer Andrew was full of energy jumping around on stage screaming his heart out, while his fiancé and close friends were at the barricade singing the lyrics right back at him. Kevin understood the assignment for the night as well, closer to the end of their set, I saw him throw his guitar around his shoulder and perfectly catch it, going back to playing the band’s music. Fractured Fortune ended the night by playing a few songs, one track was “Malevolence” while Justin from Perelandra joined them on stage. They also played a new song called “Tangents” to close out their set.

Calamity began creating music in 2022 and released singles "Titanic" & "Embers" before dropping their first EP, Colorblind, in 2023. This year, Calamity released another single, "Lose Everything." The band experienced some technical difficulties due to an error made by a staff member at the venue. Despite not having tracks and dealing with malfunctioning microphones, each band member put their heart into their performance. The fans showed incredible support for Calamity, with enthusiastic participation including grabbing the mic and moshing. It was amazing to see the fans go all out, recognizing the hard work that Calamity put into making the show happen.

Valoria's music offers a unique blend of nostalgic "Emo" music combined with soulful jazz vocals. The band debuted with the single "Wanderers" in 2022, which rapidly gained popularity, amassing over 20,000 streams. After immersing myself in the band's music ahead of their upcoming performance, it became evident why they were capturing the attention and admiration of music enthusiasts within the scene. These guys had a crazy start after a major disaster, but the locals rallied together and got a backup ready just in time. The lead singer of Perelandra hopped on stage to update the fans, and once Valoria started playing, they blew me away. The passion and energy they brought to the performance was unreal guitarist Justin whipped out a saxophone and took the show to a whole new level!

Perelandra, a band that emerged onto the music scene in late 2022, is rapidly gaining popularity for its blend of post-hardcore and metalcore sounds. Under the management of Pin Up Management, the band has released 3 EPs, the latest being Searching For Separation. Their music draws attention and establishes Perelandra as a significant presence in the industry. When Perelandra took the stage, I could tell they would give it their all based on their interactions with their fans, both on and off stage. At one point during their performance, I noticed that their bassist walked off the stage; I'm not entirely sure, but I think he was playing in the crowd, which made the show feel more personal. 2nd Halloween in Costa Rica

Last year we had just moved into our house and weren’t sure what Halloween would look like in our new neighborhood and country. Halloween decorations are hard to find as most shops are already decked out for Christmas so we assumed Halloween wouldn’t be a big thing. But we learned that some neighborhoods go all out and ours is one of them! After running out of candy too quickly last year we stocked up this year!

But first Kai had a Halloween family night at school. The schoolyard was all decorated, the high school kids put on a haunted house (which Kai wanted nothing to do with after trying it last year and bailing in tears halfway through..) and the teachers gave out candy. Super well done.

Kai went as Kai Brightstar, a character from the Young Jedi Adventures and I decided that since my hair is looking more like Cruella Deville every year I might as well embrace it! ;) Rick went as himself and our photographer. ;)

Halloween night started out super rainy (Sept-Oct is the peak of the rainy season) so we weren’t getting many trick or treaters initially. So we went for a drive in our neighborhood and she happily hopped in/out of the car to trick or treat in the rain. Surprisingly there were many families braving the rain with umbrellas and rain gear. Anything for candy on Halloween!

Our housekeeper, Lilliam, said she hadn’t seen a Halloween night like the one in our neighborhood and happily took over candy distribution while Kai did her own trick or treating.

The rain slowed down and the stream of trick or treaters became constant. So much fun! Even Ashe loved it! Except for the kid dressed as a shark who wanted to pet him…Ashe backed away as quickly as if it were a real shark. 😂

After 3 hours we gave out our last piece of candy and called it a night. Guess we will need even more candy next year! Thanks Costa Rica for great Halloween memories #2!
