Thoughts on Crossing Point

Wong Fu did it again. It took me about a month to finally write this about Crossing Point. Right after watching it, it made me actually think about my relationship and which way it’s heading and for some time, I was pretty scared to find out. And right now, I’m ready.

Crossing Point begins with a couple who went from cute and cheesy to a couple in each of their own worlds. I have to mention that the transition was brilliant! Worth all the trouble, Phil and Wes! Janice finally gets the courage to speak up and talk about this big elephant in the room about her and Sean’s declining relationship. And she does this through a graph.

Do you remember when we first met? Not how we met but how you felt when we did.

When Janice said this, it really hit me hard. My boyfriend and I started out relatively in the same way, him enamoured and eager while I was coy and a bit hesitant. But it only took a short while before I too started to believe in us and our potential and our love both soared. Long story short, after 2 years of being together, that’s when I started to notice some changes.

As my line continued to rise, your line began to fall. Pretty soon the guy who looked forward to conference calls with you finds reasons to hang up and the girl who avoided you for weeks will end up crying over losing you. I’ll toil over how someone who was so anxious to be with me can become so indifferent. Where do those emotions go? What happens to that wonder? Why does interest inevitably diminish after the start of a relationship? You got me. Is that all you wanted? Did you not want to keep me?

It’s true that there always comes a point where someone in the relationship feels this way. It’s hard not to not count and give each other mental points for being a “good boyfriend/girlfriend” but you see some signs… How come we don’t talk on the phone anymore unless I’ll be the one to call? How is it that he springs up some prior engagement and flakes out on date night? Somehow it gets to the point where you feel like you’re the one giving more and doing more for the relationship. And at that point, coincidentally, somebody new came into my life. He was mysterious and just… someone different. And nagging thoughts came into my mind: Is this a sign? There’s really nothing going on but how come I feel so guilty after being with this guy? I’ve only ever been in this one relationship, do I really want to settle with him?

It took days and nights of thinking, overanalysing and sometimes crying for me to be able to put things in the right perspective. For those of you who right now are going through this, I’m sorry but there’s just no easy way of ever deciding. I did the whole pro’s and con’s just like Ross did with Rachel and Emily. I talked about it with my closest friend who I know would never judge me whatever decision I make. But the thing is, I’m not the only one who gets a say in this relationship and I had to, like Janice, talk to my boyfriend no matter how awkward and complicated I’m feeling. And I’m happy that I did because I got to finally have the clarity that I can only get from seeing the big picture.

What I hope you remember from this is that you may be hurting right now, overthinking why your boyfriend seems so distant but you have to know that this is only your perspective. What about his side? You have to understand and take into account his side even if it may be difficult when all you can see are the wrong things that he’s saying or doing. In my case, it was only during our talk that my boyfriend even knew what I was feeling. What I didn’t see while I was being down and doubting us was that he’s busy working and taking on projects not only for himself but for me and our future. He believes in us long term. He could have stopped this downward spiral of my emotions only if he knew. And lucky for me, he does want to put in more work into our relationship than give up. Boyfriends are not mind readers, girls! Talk to him!

And so what I gather from watching Crossing Point and my own experience is that when you reach that point it can only go two ways. For some people, they just shut up and shut out. It’s easier to focus on the negativity you’re feeling than try to see the big picture. For some of the girls I know, they expect that their boyfriends should be the one to figure out their bad moods and distance. Instead of working it out, they just move on to the next relationship. Or maybe they don’t move on at all and just become a little more jaded about love.

And the other way is when two people find a way to make it work. Talk it out. This doesn’t mean you have to settle if it’s really not working but it is about finding the maturity to get on the same page and decide together. When you talk, it’s not about one person being the villain and the other, the victim. It’s about genuinely trying to understand each other’s sides.

Thank you Wong Fu for that emotional rollercoaster. Your content is amazing and always hits home and of course the execution from writing to shooting and directing and all of that production work is just wonderful. I love how you continue to grow and get better and better as time passes. You guys are an inspiration!
