Everyone's all in one room, but is that a good thing??
WARNING - there is mention of blood, death, and torture. Nothing graphic and no specifics.
It was exactly 25 steps from one side of Colin’s office to the other.  How did he know?  He’d fucking walked them repeatedly waiting for Detective Kase, Detective O’Malley, ME Cavenaugh, and AME Tidwell to get their asses to his office and take care of that damn box.  Everyone had been barred from the room other than Colin, he would NOT have this case messed up by someone touching something they shouldn’t.  He wasn’t exactly comfortable being in the office, but he also didn’t want something happening to the box without eyes on it either.
Stopping mid-trip across the room, he looked over at the box, sitting right where it had been when he walked in.  It taunted him by looking so innocent sitting there closed; but he knew what was inside and it was reminding him that its contents were there because of him.  When he’d got the scent of blood in the water surrounding Constantin Rakeovich’s operation in the city of Chicago, he’d gone after him with laser-like precision.  His case was building at an epic speed and now almost airtight thanks to the four  that he was now waiting on.
Then, everything had changed in what now seemed like an instant. Less than a week prior one of his interns had suddenly and completely disappeared.  A shy girl in her early 20’s, she was not even truly in law school yet at the University of Chicago.  Her uncle was a friend of his, so he had been doing a favor to the man by allowing her to intern in his office over the summer.  At first he thought the young woman had just flaked out on the job, but then three days later the first box had arrived.  It contained a fingernail.  No, not a fake fingernail that had fallen off or just the clipping from the end, one complete fingernail that had been torturously removed from the hand.  His stomach had turned at Serena’s description of what it would have taken for the nail to have been removed in the condition it was delivered to him in.
It had been a few days after the nail when he received an earlobe.  That had been removed by something that had cauterized the wound as it cut, making a few on the team handling the situation believe that the person doing it could be a doctor with a cauterizing scalpel.  Without anesthetic, and he doubted whoever had her was giving her any, it would have been excruciating.  The FBI had become involved at the request of the Chicago Police and the Illinois State Police Departments.  They were assisting in tracking down everything.  For the moment, Chicago PD were running the lead, but that was subject to change at any moment.
There was no doubt in anyone’s mind who was doing this, but no demands had been received regarding a ransom or what would lead to the release of the intern.  There was nothing to tie the disappearance of the intern, or the sending of her body parts, back to Rakeovich directly.  No fingerprints or DNA left within his office that did not belong there.  Whoever was doing it, was good…very good.  Until they received some communication from the kidnappers, they could only guess at things and hope that eventually they would get some kind of direction.  So far, him dropping the case was the only thing that made sense as the possible motivation.  He couldn’t do that, but having someone tortured and dissected alive wasn’t exactly a proposition he was fond of either.  So far, the Feds were unwilling to take the case over.
While the first two deliveries had been disturbing, the current one by far eclipsed them.  Just the memory of opening that box was enough to make the bile rise in his throat, and a wave of nausea hit him that had him reaching for the waste bin.  All he could do now was hope that it wasn’t hers.  Maybe this was some sick game someone was playing and they had obtained an eye from a cadaver somewhere.  He hadn’t been able to stomach looking at it long enough to know for sure, and he wasn’t looking forward to having to.  DNA had been obtained from her family, so identification was going to be done that way.  The wait for it was going to be excruciating.
*****
On the ride up to the floor that Colin’s office was on, those in the elevator tried to keep the conversation light.  Once they walked into the State’s Attorney’s office, all were well aware of the heaviness that would descend.  After all, this was the third delivery Colin had received and the same four of them had attended each one.  The crime lab would come in when they were done, after hours, to try to keep visibility low, but they had to do the first steps.
As they neared the door to Colin’s office, Karsten could feel himself tensing.  Working in Major Crimes meant that he’d seen the worst humanity could do to one another, but that didn’t make it any easier when they did.  In this instance, knowing that the victim was most likely alive and suffering somewhere actually made it worse.  At least when called to a homicide scene, the suffering had ended for the victim, it was only their family that paid the price.  At the moment, there were many who could not begin the grieving for the intern, yet also did not want to hold out too much hope for her to come out of this alive.  They were all being realistic, and it was far from a good situation.  The last delivery to Colin had been bad enough that several on the team had nightmares. He doubted anyone else on the small initial response team wanted to be there; but there was no getting out of it, so he squared his shoulders and opened the door for the other two to go through.
Once inside the State’s Attorney’s office, all blinds were dropped, the main door closed, and work readied to begin.  PPE was put on to make it easier for the evidence collection team who would come behind them.  The fewer fibers, hair, and dirt they left, the better.  Since so many people had already come into work, the outer office had been contaminated, but Colin’s office had only been disturbed by him.  They were wanting to keep it that was as much as they could.
As always, Serena was the first through the door into Colin’s office, and she immediately knew that it was going to be especially bad from the look on his face.  Many times he had attended autopsies in her morgue, watching her dissect and remove organs, and his face had rarely looked as grim as it did at the moment. Face ashen and countenance grim, if he were anyone else, she would have said he was defeated.  Only she knew Colin Masterson, and there was only one person more stubborn that he was, his brother Colton.  Defeat was what whoever was perpetrating this against his intern wanted though, which meant the poor girl was going to continue to suffer, because Colin was not going to hand it to them.  He couldn’t.  It was not her intern being returned to her one piece at a time, but she wondered how much more he could take…how much more any of them could.
Giving Colin a nod, with a sympathetic smile and understanding eyes, she slowly walked around to the back of his  desk, where she was joined on one side by Spencer who had the Medical Examiner’s camera, and then on the other by Karsten and Declan.  The latter would be holding her voice recorder to get her notes that would be transcribed later.  Karsten would be her extra set of hands.  No matter how many slasher movies you have watched, having a bloodied box opened in front of you to see a human eyeball inside is not something you can every truly be prepared for.  In his head Declan was repeating the mantra - in through the nose, out through the mouth.  He’d seen plenty of murder victims, but there was something about the eye sitting in the box, on a little bed made of cotton, with what he assumed to be part of the optic nerve coming out the back end that made it just as troubling as some of the worst mutilations he’d witnessed.  He didn’t know how Rena did her job.  If he had to look at this shit daily, he’d never be able to sleep from the nightmares.
After a few minutes of Serena looking over the eye in silence, Karsten couldn’t take it anymore.  “Is it human?  Is it hers?  Is she alive?”   He didn’t fire the questions at her the way he would at a suspect  HIs words were slow and his voice calm.  Those were the three things they needed to know, so might as well spit them out at once but not make her feel rushed or attacked in the process.  The last thing they needed was a war amongst them.  Waiting for her to answer seemed to take an eternity.
There is only so much that can be told from a tiny part of a body, she wanted to snap back at him instantly.  The stress getting to her, but she bit her tongue for a moment.  While she could answer one of those questions, she’d have to get the eye back to the morgue to be able to answer the other two.  She just didn’t have the equipment with her to be able to make determinations.  That wasn’t going to make Karsten, Declan, or probably Colin, all that happy; but she couldn’t just give them an answer to placate them.  She had to get them the truth.  If they hoped in any way to figure out where the intern was being held and who was holding her specifically, it had to be done right.
“It’s human.  Eyes are hazel with a slight astigmatism.  From the direction of the cut and other markers, I would say this is a left eye.  From the size, I would say female or teenage male.”  She looked up at Karsten, Declan, then over to Colin.  “Spencer, I need a syringe.  I want to take a vitreous fluid sample before it deteriorates any more within the eye.”  Her attention turned back to the eye as she held her hand out for what she’d asked for.  The clicking of the camera stopped and she heard it being set on the table as he retrieved what she asked for. Preparing the syringe, he took off the outer protective sleeve from the needle which left only the one that flipped into place remaining.  Years of working together meant that he knew just how to put it in her hand for her to be able to use.  “There ya go boss.”  He sighed and met Karsten’s eyes over top of her head, neither of them were enjoying this.  As his boss drew out the fluid, the eyeball deflated and he heard a gagging noise from Colin.  “If you need to vomit, not in this direction please.” He looked up at the ADA who was looking pale.  “Maybe you should sit down.  You’re not looking so good.”  Spencer again looked at Declan and jerked his head.  If Colin passed out, he was the closest one.  Declan got the message and set the recorder on the desk with the mic facing up and moved closer to Colin.
“I’m fine.” Colin waved a hand dismissively and cleared his throat, but his voice had cracked and was thin, also holding a slight tremor.  It wasn’t just the current situation, he hadn’t been anywhere close to fine since the intern disappeared.  Watching Serena draw the fluid from the eye just wasn’t helping anything.  Attending autopsies was his least favorite part of the job, it was even less so when it was someone he knew, and having this done in his office would unnerve him for some time to come.
“She had hazel eyes. I don’t know about astigmatism.  You’ll have to look at her medical records that we sent over to you.”  Colin resumed his pacing to keep from staring at what Serena was doing with the eye.  If he kept watching, he would vomit.  “Can you tell if she was alive when it was removed?”  It was a repeat of Kase’s question, but he needed to know.  It was eating at his soul, and the guilt was weighing him down like a loadstone.
“Colin, we’re not in my lab and I don’t have the equipment to know.  I can tell you that it was removed with a very sharp blade, most likely a scalpel.  Which direction and if there was blood flowing at the time, I will have to wait till we examine it back at the morgue.  The vitreous fluid should tell me at least how long ago it was removed.  There’s not much more I can tell you here.  I’m going to have to get it back to the lab.”   She looked up at him, then placed the eye in the plastic biohazard box that Spencer was holding out to her.  While he activated an instant ice pack and pulled out the soft side small cooler from the pack, Rena prepared to remove her gloves to replace them for further evidence collection without cross contamination.  “I know you are far from a patient man, but this is not something that can be rushed.  Not if you want it right.”
Something in Colin snapped when Serena couldn’t give him answers.  The last visage of his self control vaporized in an instant and he advanced towards the desk.  “What do you mean you can’t tell me?  That’s what I brought you here for!  You’re supposed to have the answer I need, Dr. Cavenaugh.  I didn’t bring you here for nothing!”
Declan stepped in front of Colin instantly and brought him to a halt.  Karsten also had started to move from behind the desk.  A human can only take so much physical and emotional strain before they snap, and Colin Masterson just had.

So not to pathologize the blorbos, but Shen Jiu totally has OCD, yeah?
(I so wanna reblog and come back for style reasons but I also want the whole thought in one place.)
Okay so qijiu reconciliation is on my mind, right? And the thing is, Yue Qingyuan thinks that he made one specific mistake (did not come back for Shen Jiu at the Qiu Estate) that, if he can just make up for it somehow, he can be forgiven and he and Shen Qingqiu can become close again.
But honestly, we know he had a good excuse for not coming back: he was locked in a cave by some of the most powerful cultivators he could be held hostage by at the time, with no hope of overpowering his Shizun, especially with his life being drained by Xuan Su. And you'd have to be a completely petty, heartless bastard not to forgive him knowing that.
The kind of petty, heartless bastard that would take advantage of the Sect Leader's guilty conscience for his own benefit.
And Shen Jiu does not ask for this.
If anything, he's irritated by Yue Qingyuan's favoritism. He also never speaks in his own defense when his crimes, true or false, are brought up. Because Shen Jiu has decided that he's an irredeemable monster, unworthy of defence and too tainted to be allowed to touch the flawless sect leader, and the sooner everyone else sees that, the better off they'll be. (This is a type of OCD.)
You see, once upon a time, he had written off his dear Qi-ge as dead (or dying, or in need of rescue) and mourned him in his heart, because he believed that only death or dismemberment would keep Qi-ge from at least trying to keep such an important promise. But then, when his best-of-a-lot-of-bad-options shifu took him to the Immortal Alliance Conference to raid the inevitable dead bodies and, not so secretly, make some of their own, he saw that same Qi-ge there, and there was no sign of permanent injury visible. He didn't even make any excuses, just apologized for not coming. And Shen Jiu — accepts that "No matter how [Shen Jiu] changed, he was a rat", that "Some people were rotten from birth. Shen Jiu thought of himself in exactly this way — someone vile and poisonous from the start. Because, at that instant, he came to a crystal-clear realization:
That he'd rather have met a Yue Qi who died in some unknown corner, his remains unsightly and forgotten, then a Yue Qingyuan who was elegant and powerful, his prospects and future boundless."
It's a hell of a thing on a young person to wish someone dead, truly and with your whole heart. To do it to a loved one can be especially hard. But the thing is: brains aren't literal. Especially when they're trying to understand emotional pain.
To go all Pop Psychologist on the character who definitely does not have access to therapy for a brief moment, he doesn't want Qi-ge dead anymore than I want to commit a random shootout on the way home from work after a long day. It's dram;, it's poetry, in a sense. I think what that quote literally means is that having Qi-ge betray him to the point of not even attempting to come back for him when he actually did well for himself, hurts just as bad as if he had died. But that's where the OCD comes in, he takes the literal meaning of his thought and condemns himself as the worst kind of human being, or rather "rat", imaginable.
And if he's the worst, what's the difference if he does whatever it takes to fulfill his every whim, as long as he doesn't get caught?
Shen Jiu performs the role of Scum Villain because he's convinced himself that he must be one, for having a dramatic thought in a moment of weakness, and that he can never earn forgiveness for that thought, that it's a thorough and unforgivable betrayal of the young man who dreamed of it being his turn to save Qi-ge, and that's exactly what makes us want to see him grow and change.
Where it often falls flat, is that we think that Shen Jiu needs to forgive Yue Qingyuan, when who he really needs to forgive is Shen Jiu.

13 days of witches: the witch-poisoner, La Voison
"...let me have / A dram of poison, such soon-speeding gear / As will disperse itself through all the veins / That the life-weary taker may fall dead." — William Shakespeare
Louis XIV, "the Sun King," is in his ascendancy, while the aristocracy continues to revel, Icarus-like, in their dwindling power. Against the background of their contest, Catherine Deshayes, "La Voison," merchant, midwife, and fortune teller, reaches the zenith of her own, less official, influence. Rising from humble beginnings, she has become wealthy and powerful providing her services to the dissolute upper class as a sorceress and poisoner. Now her vast network of agents, allies, and clients spans the breadth of society-- including, perhaps, the king's own mistress. At the hands of La Voison or those of her many underlings, inconvenient relatives are dispensed with; love potions find their way into the cups of unwitting suitors; arcane sorceries are worked at unholy masses; an attempt is made even on the life of the king himself. Eventually the reach of the poisoner-witch extends too far, and the Sun King's agents seek her out. But even the arrest and execution of La Voison herself is not enough to stamp out her ring of crime; her allies are myriad and in low places, and while many are caught, more escape through their inconsequence; the grandiose status of her customers, however, proves too much even for the king, and the case of the Affair of Poisons is officially closed to avoid bringing unbearable scandal down on the nation.

Not gonna lie. I had multiple life things happening. However, I can now appreciate the comedy behind people bending over backward and attempting to manipulate time within the canon of Milgram to say this grown mam was still seventeen. Because why the fuck does that matter?
It's giving age is just a number when I say it is so treating a child like an adult is fine we don't treat children differently a crime is a crime and a criminal is a criminal anyway.
Besides that minor said to not treat her as a child.
Actually, that minor articulated that she didn't want all her actions and personal failings to be blamed on her parents or upbringing. Something that several other prisoners outside of her have done. Including Yuno and Haruka. Because that is an overarching theme in Milgram and directly pulls attention to the mindsets of other prisoners who come before here.
Even though Haruka recognizes that his parents' treatment of him impacted and fostered the situation he now finds himself in, he doesn't blame them outright for any of the crimes he did. He doesn't come into his second voice drams like you're right guard it's my parents fsult that girl is dead they caused that.
No, he says blatantly, you forgave me. So what I did was right it was right of me to do that. Then he doesn't even attach his mom to that or bring up his dad at all. He just goes you're nkt my mom people only have one mom the mother who never looked at me wasn't my mom it's Mu who cares about me, gives me attention, clothes to wear and supported me in anything I want to do.
His second trial wasn't about the murder anymore it was deconstructing his concept of what a good mother looked like. Bwcause that's not a mother that's a friend and a bad one. Parents aren't supposed to let their kids do whatever they want. If a kid goes up to their mom and says i wanns go skydiving without a parachute-
A parent is supposed to care enough to say no, to go that's dangerous, that's wrong you can't do that. Not for the safety of those around them or to save face but because they genuinely care about their child and want what's best for them. Everybody who doesn't have kids imagines themselves as the cool parent who's understanding when they need to be understanding, accepting when they need to be accepting, and ear that's always their to listen.
People fail to understand that having a kid will never make someone any better of a person than before they had that kid. That is still a person with flaws who will never fully understand what this other human is going through, everything they like, or dislike and need to be communicated with as well. The thing that made it clear Haruka understood was the fact he was asking to have it explained at all.
He didn't just go you're wrong I'm not even going to bother with hearing your side, I don't need to be lectured like that, no thank you it's none of yohr business. He went tell me I want to know. Then the audience went you were right you were having a hard time that's unfortunate to-
Hey, you were wrong, and we don't think you understand what a mother is or what genuine care and kindness is. That sunk in he's not wearing the shit Mu gave him anymore in that video, he doesn't say she's kind like he bothered to tell Futa. He doesn't even call out to her in the end.
In the same vein a majority of the audience saw Mu's behavior and went hey no I don't think you understand what a friend is. I think this is a rather callous description of what friendship is and I disagree. Friends aren't just people who are convenient to you who you let do anything because you have a mutually beneficial relationship.
What was the longterm goal of a trial two innocent for Mu. We vote her innocent trial two no one gets mad about that she continues to live and then what she just keeps leveraging Haruka's until the trials are over. I personally believe if she was voted innocent again she would have been murdered. But let's say she wasn't for this point. How many times could she have gotten away with having others stick their neck in the guilotine for her?
Dor just how long could that not have been her fault? How long would she have narrowly avoided accountability? Blaming on Haruka because she didn't force him to say or do that, blaming it on Es, blaming it on her victim for doing horrible things to her? How long can this blame game go?
That's the tie between Futa and Mu. The whataboutism of it all. What about them? Why are we focusing on me? The convenient cover of well everyone was doing it everyone was having fun. What about them, why just me? There are so many people in the world that are bullies online and in real life? Why am I the only one being punished to this extent?
How am I different from you?
In contrast, Haruka never did this shit he said there was no one here like him. Because they were all good people, and he viewed himself as a selfish murderer. There was no point where Haruka just blamed his parents for his crime. He blamed them for withholding their affection and care after he became a certain age. For changing on him suddenly which is fair because that's a decision they fucking made.
He never said my parents were at fault for the harm I caused to others. No, he goes,
What else was I supposed to do to get their attention at that point- Which isn't blame it's a genuine fucking question. A question he asks people repeatedly. It is even implied he asked his parents to explain this to him in a way he can understand. Because from his point of view he has tried everything. Stealing, destruction of property within the home, lashing out all attention seeking behaviors that went ignored.
He also apologizes for having his family waste their lives on him in the second voice trailer glitched line. Because he does understand that what he did was bad and will reflect not only on him but his entire family. The first thing the public is going to do is blame his parents for this outcome. It's a natural response regardless of how active or inactive the parents were in the person's life.
I can't wait to hear what the fuck people have to say about Yuno's family when Life drops. Because people were already blaming them to the point she had to go my family and I get along fine in her second voice drama. Yuno has stated that the thing she did was a decision she made for herself. Haruka stated the thing he did was selfish. They both showed that they understood from the onset that their behavior was wrong.
That it may not have been the best decision they could have made or even the only one they had.
Yet it's what they decided to do, and Haruka regretted it. Amane is (barring her lying as well) the youngest here. However, that information has rarely held much weight when it has come to her trials. People have fussed about her second trial innocent verdict as others just being too easy on kids. So it's funny to see age latched onto in not only Haruka's case now but any of the prisoners cases. Because it shouldn't matter based on logic used elsewhere.
Yet a lot of people have consciously or subconsciously noticed that in Haruka's case, it matters. It matters because it's the difference between a minor killing another minor and an adult killing a child.
It's not like him being seventeen excuses it more.
Regardless, he's still attacking someone several years younger and much smaller than him. Like I'm not gonna go,
"That shooter was a minor too, so it's fine. That's just kid on kid violence."
Because that's fucking weird and ridiculous. If someone fucking like actively kills a classmate I'm not gonna go petty middle school drama. Oh, the babies took it too far again. Come on, hand me the weapon. Aww, little baby Jessica's dead, but let's get you down for your nap. This must have been traumatic for you.
As Jessica is on the floor like, "Please an ambulance."
I'm just standing there like,
"Ha ha, kids being kids am I right? Nothing we can do for her now. Well, who wants their apple juice? Who wants their little juicey box?"
What does this change?
Someone could make an au where Haruka and his victims were the same fucking age and I would still have the same amount of an issue with fucking murder. It's murder it doesn't drastically change depending on the age of the person who did it- It's a very stagnant crime. This is as weird as people swearing up and down that people just forgave Amane because she's a kid, which honestly is just giving projection now that we've gotten to this point.
Like the fuck- Look, I can forgive most things. I have a line. There are certain things I will never forgive. But um, like, if we're just talking the murders in this work of fiction, I'll play devils advocate. Honestly, I could forgive anyone here and find reasons to forgive them.
However, when it cones to real-life actions, trust me, I have verdicts that I have clocked in and am waiting to make. I don't care if it's not the verdict majority. I'll clock in those last three months of the prisoners' milgram trials. I am here like, "You think that warning of death scares me? I don't give a fuck about that. Keep raising the stakes. I'll meet you there."
I've never backed down before I'm not gonna start now. These prisoners better convince me like their lives depend on it because they may. Like trust me, others fear mongering has never convinced me before, and it won't now. Honestly, if things worked, how others alleged they would then certain prisoners should not be dead right now.
I gave one dude leniency so he could help one person, and he failed to do that. The restraints were supposed to allegedly stop Haruka. I didn't believe this, but um, it was said. The innocent verdict was supposed to allegedly alleviate the mental stress on Mahiru and foster an environment that would be conducive to her recovery.
Blaming the fact some of those things didn't happen on one person is very weird. Especially since the situation seems to have multiple factors. As well as inconsistencies. Amane killing Shidou leading to Mahiru's death without his care makes sense. However, what doesn't is why she still needed the care after so long why Jackalope said at the end of trial two notice it may have been better to stop his treatments just to then go she needed that. It's kind of odd.
The fact Mahiru died in front of Yuno and is stated to have died after Shidou by Jackalope. It's weird but I'm not really surprised just baffled. What could he have been doing that no one else could have done with what they had in Milgram when he himself stated to Es last trial they needed to stop to get these people proper care at a hospital. I can't wait for that to come to light in some way. Especially since if Mahiru was getting better, honestly, she should have recovered by the point Shidou died but she hadn't.
We saw her in fewer tinelines after their innocent verdicts, and the one time we did see her, she was implied to be looking for Shidou. It really feels like an unfortunate and avoidable outcome in her case. Yet it also would have been funny if we did vote Amane guilty and Mahiru still died. Like straight up because I do think she was fucked. Her life had been tied to Shidou's by the point their second interrogation started.
I am invested in seeing this imagery. Because like I'm still not understanding how
If people want to hit me with, but what does that say about you- I mean I guess it says I like to do what I want when it comes to the media I engage with and I do to an extent take media seriously as more than entertainment but something that can educate someone on themselves and the world around them. Something that can allow people to look into different and new perspectives.
But like the fuck I'm not writing it.
I'm engaging. I can't control the actions of anyone but myself. I won't lie about my feelings on the prisoners or the verdicts I believe they deserve based on the information I'm given. Because I want to engage the work earnestly. I don't like engaging with things I enjoy halfway.
I want to enjoy it fully for everything it is.
I feel like, honestly, a lot of people make assumptions about what will make the prisoners look more innocent in the eyes of others- Simply because that is what makes them look more innocent to themselves. It's easy to assume all these things about what makes someone innocent or forgivable. All the while never asking what forgiveness or innocence means to other people viewing the same thing.
A lot of miscommunication and animosity could be resolved from just simply going,
"What do you think about this?"
Instead of just jumping on defense right away. Because honestly, the things that I believe make someone appear more innocent could be why people see a character as more guilty..the same reason that people will say shouldn't equate to innocence in one case may equate to it in another. People are complicated and sometimes when it comes to the prisoners in Milgram age will only matter as far as the observer say it does.
So we can have cases where people are arguing that Haruka was younger and the report is lying or time shenanigans all the while stating age doesn't matter in other cases. I think what does matter as always is how we interact with each other and we realize these biases before they turn into resentments towards the audience and verdicts aren't dictated by what the characters has done but how one has been treated by those characters fans.
All that to say, at the end of the day, it never hurts to be a bit nicer.

Oof, Minglan is ruthless.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A senior member of the family commits a crime and the servant takes the brunt of the blame. She has learned the game.
***
Aww, Wang Ruofu is actually begging for her.
Tumblr media
Her biggest problem is that she is not inherently cruel and evil, but she is so biased and stupid and easily led, that she may as well be.
***
I still don't understand how these gags in c-drams work and why you can't just spit them out.
Tumblr media
***
Seriously! She just kidnapped a bunch of people.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
How is this legal?
***
Seriously, how are they allowed to do this?
Tumblr media
Servants or not, they at the very least belong to another government official's house and you can't just torture and kill a bunch of them at will!
***
LMAO, vicious!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
***
Yikes 😬
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This mafia don behaviour, and while pregnant, too! Poor servant, she should have kept her mouth shut.
***
Oh, yeah, you fell for her meek and obedient act hook, line and sinker!
Tumblr media
This time, you really chose the wrong person to mess with.
***
LMAO, I love that she is calling Minlgan heartless and ruthless when she herself just tried to poison an old woman just because she got butthurt.
Tumblr media
And that's before we even get to all the crap she is responsible for in her own house.
***
OMG, Minglan?? 😮😮
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Taxian-jun would be proud 😅
***
Isn't that the thing, though?
Tumblr media
Wang Ruofu didn't raise her. Minglan suffered all that neglect and abuse because she was not actually her daughter and her true mother was dead.
***
LMAO, eldest sister-in-law is the only sensible one here 🤣🤣
Tumblr media
She sees things are getting out of hand and that Minglan has lost her entire mind. Better get Changbai home ASAP!
***
LMAO, looks like the Kang house is saying, good riddance! And the Wang house is trying to save face.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I feel like Aunt Kang's husband would also send Minglan a gift basket if she by some miracle followed through on killing his shit wife.
***
Oh, shut up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I am so tired of her screeching and whining.
***
I love how these shit people keep calling Minglan ruthless and evil when they are the ones poisoning people left and right.
Tumblr media
They just ended up poisoning the wrong woman because they were so used to getting away with everything.
***
LMAO, Wang Ruofu deserves this. Of course this wretch threw her under the bus.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
***
LMFAO
Tumblr media
Because now that Changbai is absent and Granny is out of commission, Six Miss is the only one with a working brain among them all. OK, I'm unfair, the eldest sis-in-law also has a working brain, but she's not getting involved.
***
WTF?
Tumblr media
What is Minglan's endgame here?

Juniee, what's some Fleet-acceptable Movies that you like to watch?
(or does the fleet not have content restriction for what you're allowed to watch?)
Tumblr media
"The fleet doesn't exactly restrict the kind of movies you can watch.
I mean, so long as it's not rebel propaganda, but I mean, that's illegal everywhere. And who would want to watch that stuff anyways?"
Says the troll who would gladly watch empire propaganda.
"Anyways, I mostly like to watch crime dramas and stuff. Some mysteries, too."
She also likes rom-drams. Not that she'll ever admit to that.

Frank: Oh ay ay, I wot. But 't isn't all lacking valor, is't? Not yea half lacking valor, I bethink thou very much quite did enjoy 't.
Frank: Oh. So soft.
Brad: Cease 't. Cease 't. Oh Janet. JANET!
Frank: Shhh! Janet's belike asleep by anon, doth thou wanteth that lady to see thou. Like this!
Brad: Like this, like how? 't's thy fault, thou're to censure, I did do bethink 't wast the real thing!
Frank: Oh cometh on, Brad, admit 't, thou did like 't, didn't thou? Thither's nay crime in giving yourself ov'r to pleasure,
Brad. Oh Brad, thou've did waste so much time already. Janet needn't wot, I did win't betoken.
Brad: Well, gage thou did win't betoken.
Frank: On mine mother's graoouuuuuu.
Riff Raff: Master, Rocky hath broken his chains and did vanish. The new playmate is loose and somewhere on the grounds. Magenta hath just released. The dogs.
Frank: Mmmmm? Coming!
~~~
Janet: What's happening hither? Whence's Brad? Whence's anybody?
Oh, Brad. Brad, mine ladybird, how couldst I hast done this to thou? Oh, if 't be true only we hadn't did maketh this journey. If 't be true only the car hadn't broken down. Oh, if 't be true only we wast amongst cater-cousins. Or sane persons, Oh Brad, what hast they done with him. ….
…..Oh, Brad, Oh Brad-How couldst thou?
Rocky: Errrrrr
Janet: Oh, but thou're did hurt. Did do they doth this to thou? Hither, I'll dress thy wounds. Baby thither.
~~~
Narrator: Emotion, agitation or disturbance of the mind. Vehement or excited mental state. 't is eke a powerful and irrational master. And from what Magenta and Columbia eagerly did view on their television monitor thither did seem dram doubt yond Janet wast, marry, . Its slave.
Magenta and Columbia: betoken us about 't, Janet.
(SONG) TOUCH-A TOUCH-A TOUCH-A TOUCH ME
Janet: I wast humour done in,
couldn't winneth
I'd only ever did kiss 'ere.
Columbia: Thou cullionly the lady's.
Magenta: Uh Ha .
Janet: I did do bethink
thither's nay did lie-to getting
Into heavy petting
'T only leads to ado
And seat wetting.
Anon all I wanteth to wot
is how to wend.
I've did taste blood
and I wanteth moo.
Magenta and Columbia: Moo, moo, moo
Janet: I'll did put up nay resistance
I wanteth to stayeth the distance
I've did get an itch to scratch
I needeth assistance.
Toucha toucha toucha touch me
I wanteth to beest filthy
Thrill me, chill me, fulfil me
Creature of the night.
Then if 't be true aught grows,
while thou pose,
I'll oil thou up
and rubbeth thou down.
Magenta and Columbia: Down, down, down.
Janet: And yond's just one
bawbling fraction
of the main attraction.
Thou needeth a gentle handeth
and I needeth action.
Toucha toucha toucha touch me
I wanteth to beest filthy
Thrill me, chill me, fulfil me
Creature of the night.
Columbia: Toucha toucha toucha touch me
Magenta: I wanteth to beest filthy.
Columbia: Thrill me, chill me, fulfil me,
Magenta: Creature of the night.
Janet: Oh, toucha toucha toucha touch me,
I wanteth to beest filthy
Thrill me, chill me, fulfil me,
Creature of the night.
Rocky: Creature of the night
Brad: Creature of the night?
Frank: Creature of the night.
Magenta: Creature of the night.
Riff Raff: Creature of the night.
Columbia: Creature of the night.
Rocky: Creature of the night!
Janet: Creature of the night.
~~~
Riff Raff: Owwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww! Merrrrrcy!
Frank: How did do 't befall? I did understand thou wast to beest watching!
Riff Raff: I wast only aroint for a minute. Master.
Frank: Well, see if 't be true thou can findeth him on the monitor.
Riff Raff: Master, master. We hast a visitor.
Brad: Ho, Scotty!. Leech Everett Scott.
Riff Raff: Thou wot this earthling. Person?
Brad: I most forsooth doth! He happeneth to beest an corky cater-cousin of mine.
Frank: I see. So this wasn't simply a chance meeting. Thou did do cometh hither with a purpose.
Brad: I did tell thou, mine carriage did do break down. I wast telling the sooth.
Frank: I wot what thou did tell me. But this Leech Everett Scott, his name is not unknown to me.
Brad: He wast a science teacher at Denton High School.
Frank: And anon he worketh for thy government, doesn't he,
Brad? He's attached to the bureau of investigation of yond which thou clepe UFO's! Isn't yond right, Brad?
Brad: He might beest.I don't wot.
Riff Raff: The intruder is entering the building, Master.
Frank: He'll belike beest. In the Zen cubiculo. Shalt we inquire of him in person?
Brad: Most wondrous Scott!
Scott: Frank N Furter, we meeteth at last.
Brad: Leech Scott!
Scott: Brad! What art thou doing hither?
Frank: Don't playeth games Leech Scott. Thou wot perfectly well what Brad Majors is doing hither. 't wast part of thy plan, wast 't not? Yond he and his female shouldst check the layout for thou. Well, unfortunately for thou, all the plans art to beest did do change. I am adaptable, Leech Scott; I wot Brad is.
Scott: I can assure thou yond Brad's presence hither cometh as a complete hoyday to me. I did do cometh hither to findeth Eddie.
Brad: Eddie! I've seen him! Frank: Eddie! What doth thou wot of Eddie, Leech Scott?
Scott: I befall to wot a most wondrous deal about a lot of things. Thou see Eddie happeneth to beest mine nephew.
Brad: Leech Scott.
Janet: Ah!
Scott: Janet!
Janet: Leech Scott!
Brad: Janet!
Janet: Brad!
Frank: Rocky!
Scott: Janet!
Janet: Leech Scott!
Brad: Janet!
Janet: Brad!
Frank: Rocky!
Scott: Janet!
Janet: Leech Scott!
Brad: Janet!
Janet: Brad!
Frank: Rocky!
Frank: Hark.I did maketh thou. And I can breaketh thou just as easily.
Magenta: Master, dinner is did prepare!
Frank: Excellent. Under the circumstances, formal dress is to beest optional.
~~~
Narrator: Food hath at each moment did play a vital role in Life's rituals. The breaking of the bread, the last meal of the condemned sir, and anon, this meal. However informal 't might appeareth, thou can beest sure yond thither wast to beest very dram. Bon ami.
Frank: A toast. To absent cater-cousins.
All: To absent cater-cousins.
Frank: And Rocky. Joyous Birthday to thou, joyous Birthday to thou! Joyous Birthday lief Rocky…….. Shalt we?
Scott: We did do cometh hither to breaketh with Eddie.
Columbia: Eddie!
Frank: Yond's a rather tender subject. Another slice anyone?
Columbia: Fetch meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!.
Scott: I did knoweth he wast in with a lacking valor crowd, but 't wast worse than I did imagine. Aliens!
Rocky: Fie!
Brad & Janet: Leech Scott!
Frank: Wend on, Leech Scott. Or shouldst I declare Leech. Von Scott?
Brad: Just what jump art thou implying?
Scott: 't's valorous now!
Brad: But Leech Scott!
Scott: Yond's valorous now, Brad!
(Song) EDDIE
From the day he wast born
He wast ado.
He wast the thorn
In his mother's side.
The lady did tryeth in vain.
Narrator: But he nev'r did cause that lady nothing but shame.
Scott: He did leave home the day the lady did do kicketh the bucket.
From the day the lady wast gone
All he did want wast Rock 'n' Roll porn
And a mechanical horse.
Shooting up junk.
Narrator: He wast a base down vile dram punk!
Scott: Taking everyone for a ride.
All: at which hour Eddie did do sayeth
he didn't like his Teddy
thou did knoweth he wast
a nay-valorous peat.
But at which hour he threatened thy life
with a switch-blade bodkin
Frank: What a guy!
Janet: maketh thou caterwauling.
Scott: Und I did do.
Columbia: Everybody shoved him.
I very nearly did love him.
I did do sayeth, ho, hark to me;
stayeth sane inside insanity!
But he locked the door
and did throw aroint the key.
Scott: But he wilt hast been drawn
Into something,
Making him warn
Me in a note yond reads.
All: What's 't declare? What's 't declare?
Eddie's voice: I'm out of mine hed.
Oh, hie, or I may beest dead.
They mustn't carryeth out their evil deeds.
All: At which hour Eddie did do sayeth
he didn't like his Teddy
thou did knoweth he wast
a nay-valorous peat.
But at which hour he threatened thy life
with a switch-blade bodkin
Frank: What a guy!
Janet: maketh thou caterwauling.
Scott: Und I did do.
All: at which hour Eddie did do sayeth
he didn't like his Teddy
thou did knoweth he wast
a nay-valorous peat.
But at which hour he threatened thy life
with a switch-blade bodkin
Frank: What a guy!
Janet: Maketh thou caterwauling.
Scott: Und I did do.
Frank: Rocky! How couldst thou?
(SONG) WISE UP
FRANK: I'll betoken thou once;
I did win't betoken thou twice.
Thou'd better wise up, Janet Weiss.
Thy apple pie don't gust too nice.
Thou'd better wise up, Janet Weiss.
I've did did lie the seed;
'T shouldst beest all thou needeth.
Thou're as sensual as a pencil,
did wind up like an E or first string.
At which hour we did maketh 't, didja heareth a bell ring?
Ya gotta block?
Well, taketh mine counsel.
Thou better wise up, Janet Weiss.
The transducer wilt seduce ya.
Janet: Mine feet! I can't moveth mine feet!
Scott: Mine wheels! Mine God, I can't moveth mine wheels!
Brad: 't's as if 't be true we're glued to the spot!
Frank: thou art! So quake with fear, thou tiny daws!
Janet: We're did trap!
Frank: 't's something thou'll receiveth did use to.
A mental mind alas can beest nice.
Scott: Thou did win't findeth Earth people quite the easy mark thou imagine. This sonic transducer.'t is, I suppose, some kind of audio-vibrato- physio-molecular transport device?
Brad: Thou cullionly.
Scott: Ay, Brad, 't's something we ourselves hast been working on for quite some time. But 't seemeth our cater-cousin hither hath did find a means of perfecting 't. A device which is capable of breaking down solid matter and then projecting 't through space and, who is't knoweth, haply yea time. Itself!
Janet: Thou cullionly he's going to sendeth us to another planet?
Frank: Planet, shmanet, Janet!
Thou better wise up, Janet Weiss.
Thou better wise up, buildeth thy thighs up,
thou better wise up
Narrator: And then the lady did cry out.
Janet: Ceeeeeeeease!
Frank: Don't receiveth hot and flustered!
Did lie-to a did bite of mustard.
Brad: Thou're a hot dog,
but thou better not tryeth to did hurt
that lady, Frank Furter.
Scott: Thou're a hot dog,
but thou'd better not tryeth to did hurt
that lady, Frank Furter.
Janet: Thou're a hot dog …..
Columbia: Mine God! I can't standeth any moo of this! First thou spurn me for Eddie, and then thou throweth him off like an corky overcoat for Rocky! Thou cheweth people up and then thou spit those folk out again.I did love thou. Doth thou heareth me? I did love thou! And what did do 't receiveth me? Yeah, I'll betoken thou: a big nothing. Thou're like a sponge. Thou taketh, taketh, taketh, and drain others of their love and emotion. Yeah, well, I've did has't enow. Thou're gonna chooseth between me and Rocky, so named because of the rocks in his mazzard.
Frank: 'T's not easy having a valorous time. Yea smiling maketh mine visage ache. And mine children turn on me. Rocky's behaving just the way yond Eddie did do. Doth thou bethink I did maketh a misprision, splitting his brain between the two of those folk?
Magenta: Ahhhh! I groweth veary of this ordinary! At which hour shalt we returneth to Transylvania, i understandeth thee not?
Frank: Magenta, I am marry grateful to both thou and thy brother Riff Raff. Thou hast both served me well. Loyalty such as yours shalt not wend unrewarded. Thou wilt discover yond at which hour the humour doth take me, I can beest quite generous.
Magenta: I asketh for nothing. Nothing.
Frank: And thou shalt taketh 't. In abundance! Cometh, we art eft for the floor bewray!
~~~
Narrator: And so, by some extraordinary co-incidence, fate, 't did seem, did has't did do decide yond Brad and Janet shouldst keepeth yond appointment with their cater-cousin, Leech Everett Scott. But 't wast to beest in a situation which none of those folk would hast possibly foreseen. And, just a few hours after announcing their engagement, Brad and Janet did has't both did taste forbidden fruit. This in itself wast proof yond their host wast a sir of dram morals. And some persuasion. What further indignities wast they to beest subjected to? And what of the floor bewray yond is spoken of? In an exsufflicate house? In the middle of the night? What diabolical plan did has't been did shape by Frank's crazed imagination? What marry? From what did has't gone 'ere, 't wast clear yond this wast to beest nay picnic.
(SONG) DID RISE TINT MINE ORDINARY
Columbia: 't wast most wondrous at which hour 't
all did do beginneth.
I wast a regular Frankie fan.
But 't wast ov'r at which hour he did has't the plan
To start a-working on a muscle sir.
Anon the only thing yond gives me desire
Is mine love of a certain dope.
Did rise tints mine ordinary,
keeps me safe from mine ado and teen.
Rocky: I'm just seven hours corky,
And truly quite quaint to behold.
And somebody shouldst beest did tell
mine libido hasn't been did control.
Anon the only thing I've cometh to trust
Is an orgasmic drive of lust.
Did rise tints mine ordinary
and keeps me safe from mine ado and teen.
Brad: 't's beyond me;
holp me Mommy!
I'll beest valorous; thou'll see.
Taketh this dream aroint.
What's this? Did shalt we see,
I feeleth sexy!
What's cometh ov'r me?
Wo! Hither 't cometh again.
Janet: I feeleth released;
lacking valor times decease.
Mine confidence hath did increase;
reality is hither.
The game hath been disbanded.
Mine mind hath been did expand.
'T's a gas yond Frankie's did land!
His lust is so sincere.
(SONG) FANFARE/DON'T DREAM 'T
Frank: There's few or none will entertain
it betid to Fay Wray?
Yond delicate, satin-draped frame?
As 't did cling to that lady thigh
How I did start to caterwauling
'cause I did want to beest did dress
just the same.
Giveth yourself ov'r to absolute pleasure.
Swim the warm waters of sins of the flesh.
Erotic conceit, beyond any measure
And sensual daydreams to treasure still.
Can't thou just see 't? Oh, oh, oh. Oh!
Don't dream 't, beest 't.
All: Don't dream 't, beest 't.
Scott: Ach! We've did get to receiveth out of this trap
'ere this decadence saps our wills.
I've did get to beest stout, and tryeth to hang on,
or else mine mind may well snap,
and mine life wilt beest did live. For the thrills!
Brad: 't's beyond me; holp me Mommy!
Janet: God bless Lili St. Cyr..
(SONG) WILD AND UNTAMED THING
Frank: Mine, mine, mine, mine, mine, mine,
mine, mine, mine, mine, mine, mine.
Mine! I'm a wild and an untamed thing.
I'm a bee with a deadly sting.
Thou receiveth a did hit and thy mind goeth ping.
Thy heart'll thump and thy blood wilt sing.
So did let the party and the sounds rock on.
We're gonna shake 't 'till the life hath gone.
Did rise tint mine ordinary,
keepeth me safe from mine ado and teen.
All: We're a wild and an untamed thing.
We're bees with a deadly sting.
Thou receiveth a did hit and thy mind goeth ping.
Thy heart'll thump and thy blood wilt sing.
So did let the party and the sounds rock on.
We're gonna shake 't 'till the life hath gone.
Did rise tint mine ordinary,
keepeth me safe from mine ado and teen.
We're a wild and an untamed thing.
We're bees with a deadly sting.
Thou receiveth a did hit and thy mind goeth ping.
Thy heart'll thump and thy blood wilt sing.
So did let the party and the sounds rock on.
We're gonna shake 't 'till the life hath gone, gone, gone.
Did rise tint mine ordinary,
keepeth me safe from mine ado and teen.
Riff Raff: Frank N Furter, 't's all ov'r.
Thy mission is a failure;
thy lifestyle's too extreme.
I'm thy new commander;
thou anon art mine prisoner.
We returneth to Transylvania.
Prepare the transit beam.
Frank: Wait! I can dilate!
(SONG) I'M GOING HOME
Frank: On the day I did wend aroint
All: Goodbye.
Frank: Wast all I did has't to declare.
All: Anon I.
Frank: I wanteth to cometh again, and stayeth.
All: Oh, mine, mine.
Frank: Smileth, and yond wilt cullionly I may.
'Cause I've seen, oh, blue skies,
Through the gouts of sorrow in mine eyes
And I realize, I'm going home.
All: I'm going home.
Frank: Everywhere 't's been the same.
All: Humour.
Frank: Like I'm outside in the rain.
All: Wheeling.
Frank: Free to tryeth and findeth a game.
All: Dealing.
Frank: Cards for sorrow, cards for teen.
'Cause I've seen, oh, blue skies
Through the gouts of sorrow in mine eyes
And I realize, I'm going home.
Frank & All: I'm going home.
Magenta: How sentimental.
Riff Raff: And eke presumptuous of thou. Thou see, at which hour I did do sayeth WE wast to returneth to Transylvania, I did refer only to Magenta and myself. I'm my most humble apology, however, if 't be true thou did find mine words misleading, but thou see, thou art to remain hither, in spirit, did conclude, be 't.
Scott: Most wondrous heavens! Yond's a laser!
Riff Raff: Ay, Leech. Scott. A laser capable of emitting a beam of pure anti- matter.
Brad: Thou cullionly. Thou're going to killeth him? What's his crime?
Scott: Thou did see what did do becometh of Eddie. Society wilt beest did protect.
Riff Raff: Jump, Leech. Scott. And anon, Frank N Furter, thy time hath cometh. Declare goodbye to all of this, and valorous morrow to thee, sir. To oblivion!
Brad: Valorous God!
Janet: Oh! Thou did kill those folk!
Magenta: But I did do bethink thou did like those folk. They did like thou.
Riff Raff: They didn't like me! He nev'r did like ME!
Scott: thou did do right.
Riff Raff: A decision did has't to beest did maketh.
Scott: thou're O.K. By me.
Riff Raff: Leech Scott, I'm my most humble apology about thy nephew.
Scott: Eddie? Ay, well, haply 't wast all for the most wondrous, heh, heh, heh.
Riff: Thou shouldst leaveth anon, Leech Scott, while 't is still possible. We art about to beam the entire house to the planet Transsexual, in the galaxy of Transylvania…. Wend…. Anon! Our gentle mission is did complete, mine most quite quaint sister, and lief we shalt returneth to the moon-drenched stronds of our beloved planet.
Magenta: Ah, sweet Transsexual, land of night. To sing and dance once moo to thy dark refrain. To taketh yond - grise, to the right. Both: HAH!
Riff Raff: But 't's the pelvic did thrust.
Transylvanians: Yond drives thou insane!
Magenta: And our ordinary. Wilt doth the Time Warp. Again!
(SONG) SUPER HEROES
Brad: I've done a lot;
God knoweth I've did tryeth
To findeth the sooth.
I've yea did lie.
But all I wot is down inside I'm ..
All: Bleeding.
Janet: And super heroes
cometh to the feast
To gust the flesh
not yet deceased.
And all I wot
is still the beast is…
All: Feeding. Ahh, ahh.
Narrator: And crawling
on the planet's visage
Some insects,
did do call the human race.
Did lose in time,
and did lose in space,
And meaning.
All: Meaning.
(SONG) SCIENCE FICTION/DOUBLE FAVOUR - REPRISE
Usherette: Science Fiction Double favour.
Frank hath did do build and did lose his creature.
Darkness hath did conquer Brad and Janet.
The meiny gone to A distant planet.
Wo, oh, oh, oh.
At the late night, double favour,
Picture bewray.
I wanteth to wend, oh, oh, oh.
To the late night, double favour,
Pic….ture …………bewray.
Writeup: The Great(?) OpenGL Wrapper Race
Somehow, I always find myself gravitating back to the S3 ViRGE/DX.
This time around, rather than placing total focus on the ViRGE itself, we'll be taking a look at some OpenGL wrappers!
This writeup will be updated along the way as more videos release.
The setup is as follows:
Matsonic MS7102C
Windows 98SE RTM with the following patches/update: KernelEX 4.5.2, NUSB v3.3e, Windows Installer 2.0, DirectX 9.0c
Intel Pentium III (Coppermine) @ 750MHz
S3 ViRGE/DX @50MHz w/4MB EDO DRAM (using the S3 Virge "SuperUni" drivers)
256MB PC-133 SDRAM (Kingston KVR133X64C3/512) (System can only handle 256MB per DIMM)
Sound Blaster AWE32 CT2760
Some random 5GB Hitachi 2.5" HDD that I "borrowed" from a very dead laptop
Java 6 (1.6.0) build 105/Java 6u0
Wrappers to be tested:
S3Mesa - a wrapper based on the Mesa project. It's a full OpenGL implementation sitting on top of S3D and Direct3D, but from the available source code appears to be missing some functionality and is quite unstable.
AltOGL - also a wrapper based on the Mesa project, but relies solely on Direct3D. It is similarly missing some functionality, but is much more widely compatible with cards beyond the Virge thanks to its lack of reliance on S3's proprietary API.
Techland S3D - one of the many wrappers made by Techland for their Quake II engine-based "Crime Cities" game. Although it like S3's own GLQuake wrappers only implements as much of the API as is needed by the engine, it still implements far more features than S3's DX5 and DX6-based wrappers, of which are not tested in this wrapper race.
Techland D3D - like AltOGL, Techland's D3D counterpart to their S3D wrapper implements a subset of the OpenGL spec, but still enough to be compatible with a number of titles beyond Quake II engine games.
GLDirect 1.x - A very early version of GLDirect. There exists a license code for this version floating around on the internet that appears to have been used for internal testing by Shuttle, a PC manufacturer that's largely fallen out of relevance and mainly does industrial PCs nowadays.
GLDirect 3.0.0 - One of the last versions of GLDirect to support hardware acceleration on DX6-class graphics cards.
Things tested
WGLGears
ClassiCube 1.3.5 and 1.3.6
Minecraft: Indev in-20091223-1459, Alpha 1.0.4, Beta 1.7.3 (with and without Optifine), Release 1.5.2
Tux Racer
GL Excess benchmark
Half Life 1 v1.1.1.1 KingSoft NoSteam edition
Findings
GLDirect 1.01
OpenGL Version String
Vendor: SciTech Software, Inc. Renderer: GLDirect S3 Inc. ViRGE/DX/GX Version: 1.2 Mesa 3.1
Textures do not work at all in every test case besides Half Life.
ClassiCube 1.3.5 and 1.3.6 both fail to render any terrain beyond a greyish horizon and the outlines of blocks. All blocks, items, and text that are able to be rendered are pure white in color and have no textures applied.
Minecraft Indev in-20091223-1459 and Beta 1.7.3 with Optifine crash upon world-load
Minecraft Alpha 1.0.4, Beta 1.7.3, and Release 1.5.2 all crash upon launch.
Tux Racer is able to render 2D textures such as text and graphics, but flickers INTENSELY and is a seizure risk. Beyond this, however, the game will only render a solid white screen.
Half Life launches and runs, but at a terrible 4 FPS. The game lags hard enough that the tram in the opening area of the game is frozen where it is, preventing the player from accessing anything beyond the intro cutscene.
GL Excess crashes instantly.
Performance
GLGears: ~76 FPS
ClassiCube 1.3.5/1.3.6: Unknown; game fails to render
Minecraft in-20091223-1459: Unknown; world crash
Minecraft Alpha 1.0.4: Unknown; crash on game launch
Minecraft Beta 1.7.3: Unknown; crash on game launch
Minecraft Beta 1.7.3 w/Optifine: Unknown; world crash
Minecraft Release 1.5.2: Unknown; crash on game launch
Tux Racer: Unknown; game fails to render in a VERY seizure-inducing way
Half Life: ~4 FPS; gameplay outside of training room is broken
GL Excess: Unknown; instant crash
GLDirect 2.00
youtube
From here on, GLDirect is split between "Game" and "CAD" wrappers, denoted by either a "G" or a "C" after the version number where written in this writeup.
OpenGL Version String (2.00C)
Vendor: SciTech Software, Inc. Renderer: GLDirect S3 Inc. ViRGE/DX/GX Version: 1.2 Mesa 3.1
OpenGL Version String (2.00G)
Vendor: SciTech Software, Inc. Renderer: GLDirect Version: 1.1
GLDirect 2.00C likes to complain about insufficient color precision.
Changing the color precision from 24-bit up to the maximum 32-bit color does absolutely nothing.
The CAD wrapper very clearly is intended for non-gaming workloads given how easily it crashes things. However, it is strange that it is labeled as a "maximum compatibility" wrapper/driver.
I am not using the SciTech GLDirect 3.0 driver beta seen in the video because it requires a card capable of higher DirectX versions than 6, which is what the S3 ViRGE supports. I may revisit this video idea with a later graphics card in a future video for more thorough testing.
Using the 2.00G wrapper, Minecraft Alpha and Beta have many visual bugs. Text is not rendered at all, for example, and the world selection screen is eerily dim compared to what it should be. Beta in particular extends this darkness to the title screen as well.
Under 2.00G, Minecraft Beta 1.7.3 with Optifine no longer has this darkness.
Under 2.00G, Minecraft Release 1.5.2... inverts the colors of the Mojang logo?
Did you know that if you fall out of the Half Life intro tram in just the right place, you get to see the multiverse?
The framerate starts to rise when this happens, as it appears that the tram after becoming unstuck will trigger the next loading screen. Unfortunately, this loading screen appears to be what seals your fate. Once the tram stops though you at least get to meet biblically-accurate Half Life rendering in a smooth double-digit framerate!
Performance (2.00C)
GLGears: 63 FPS
ClassiCube 1.3.5/1.3.6: Unknown; game fails to render
Minecraft in-20091223-1459: Unknown; crash on game launch
Minecraft Alpha 1.0.4: Unknown; crash on game launch
Minecraft Beta 1.7.3: Unknown; crash on game launch
Minecraft Beta 1.7.3 w/Optifine: Unknown; crash on game launch
Minecraft Release 1.5.2: Unknown; assumed crash on game launch based on previous versions' behavior
Tux Racer: Unknown; game fails to render (no longer seizure inducing at least)
Half Life: Unknown; crash on game launch
GL Excess: Unknown; instant crash
Performance (2.00G)
GLGears: 390 FPS; only a black screen was rendered.
ClassiCube 1.3.5/1.3.6: 10-30 FPS range, ~12-15 FPS on average; most of the game still does not render, but text, the hotbar, hand items, and very occasional flickers of geometry do render. Seizure warning.
Minecraft in-20091223-1459: Unknown; crash on world load
Minecraft Alpha 1.0.4: Unknown; crash on world load
Minecraft Beta 1.7.3: Unknown; crash on world load
Minecraft Beta 1.7.3 w/Optifine: Unknown; crash on world load
Minecraft Release 1.5.2: Unknown; crash on game launch
Tux Racer: Unknown; crash on game launch
Half Life: 4-5 FPS; game physics are almost entirely broken down and I'm pretty sure you end up phasing into a higher plane of existence along the way. Trying to enter the training room crashed the entire PC afterwards.
GL Excess: Unknown; instant crash
OpenGL Version String (3.00C)
Vendor: SciTech Software, Inc. Renderer: GLDirect S3 Inc. ViRGE/DX/GX Version: 1.2 Mesa 3.1
GLDirect 3.00, both the CAD and Game versions, appears to behave identically to GLDirect 2.00 in almost all cases unless stated otherwise.
Performance (3.00G)
GLGears: 249 FPS; gears are rendered completely incorrectly
ClassiCube 1.3.5: 15-20 FPS on average; most of the game fails to render and the system hard-crashes after a few seconds.
ClassiCube 1.3.6: Insta-crash.
Minecraft: Crash on world load across all versions. Didn't bother testing Release 1.5.2.
Tux Racer: Unknown; crash on game launch
Half Life: ~4 FPS; extremely choppy audio in tutorial level.
GL Excess: Unknown; instant crash
Performance (3.00C)
GLGears: 80 FPS; Perfectly rendered
ClassiCube 1.3.5/1.3.6: Unknown; renders a white screen
Minecraft: Crashes on game launch. The game may also complain about color depth here.
Tux Racer: Unknown; renders a white screen
Half Life: Unknown; renders a white screen and then crashes on game launch
GL Excess: Unknown; instant crash
Techland S3D
We've now moved on from GLDirect! From here on out, each wrapper is instead a discrete opengl32.dll file that must be dropped into the folder of whatever program you'd like to run it with.
OpenGL Version String
Vendor: Techland Renderer: S3 Virge 3093KB texmem KNI Version: 1.1 beta 6
Right off the bat, things appear to be taking a turn for the interesting as GLGears fails to render anything.
Performance
GLGears: 60 FPS, but only because a black screen is rendered.
ClassiCube 1.3.5/1.3.6: Crashes on game launch but renders a solid blue screen.
Minecraft in-20091223-1459: We load into a world! Have fun trying to play it though. Rendering is very flickery and broken. It may be possible that there's an issue of some kind with z-buffering. 12-15 fps if that matters at all in this case.
Minecraft Alpha 1.0.4: Crashes on game launch.
Minecraft Beta 1.7.3: Renders an inverted vignette that slowly grows darker.
Minecraft Beta 1.7.3 w/Optifine: Crashes on world load.
Minecraft Release 1.5.2: Rendered the title screen with many errors for a brief moment before turning to a black screen and crashing.
Tux Racer: Unknown; renders mostly a white screen. The game does respond to user inputs, and the rendered scene changes based on those inputs, but no textures or complex objects are ever rendered. Instead, you only get the white "floor" plane, a solid blue skybox, and translucent boxes where text, objects, and particles should've been.
Half Life: Crash on game launch; absolutely RAVAGES the title screen in ways I thought only the Alliance AT3D could.
GL Excess: Actually loads! But renders only solid black or white screens after the initial loading screen.
Two more wrappers left after this one! This wrapper and the Techland S3D wrapper that came before it were both created by Techland originally for their "Crime Cities" game, which, being an OpenGL title during an era where support was spotty at best across the dozens of vendors that existed at the time, necessitated the creation of a set of OpenGL wrappers that could translate calls to other APIs.
Anyway, I originally thought that there wasn't going to be much that'd be interesting about this wrapper based on how Minecraft (didn't) work, but I was quickly proven wrong in the things I tested afterwards!
Vendor: Techland Renderer: Direct3D (display, Primary Display Driver) KNI Version: 1.1 beta 6
Performance
GLGears: ~290 FPS, but only because a black screen is rendered.
ClassiCube 1.3.5/1.3.6: 2-5 FPS. Runs with z-buffering issues. Faster than software rendering, but not by much (SW rendering was roughly 1-3 FPS)
Minecraft: Renders only a black screen and (usually) crashes.
Tux Racer: Unknown; renders a mostly-white screen. However, shading works well enough that you can just barely distinguish what is what.
Half Life: Crash on game loading after the title screen; absolutely RAVAGES the title screen in ways I thought only the Alliance AT3D could.
GL Excess: Actually runs! Performance is alright in some parts but generally remains low. Also, it erroneously uses the exact same texture for every single rendered object.
S3Mesa/AltOGL
So, it turns out that there may or may not be some level of bugginess involved with S3Mesa and AltOGL on my current testing setup. Whereas both wrappers were (somewhat) stable and able to load into both Minecraft and Half Life with relatively little trouble in previous experiments with AltOGL/S3Mesa and the Virge, this time around it doesn't appear to be working as expected. There may be something that got screwed up thanks to having installed and used multiple different versions of GLDirect prior to using S3Mesa and AltOGL.
The best-case scenario would have been to start off with a fresh install of Windows 98 with every test run with a different wrapper, but in this case I didn't do that. As a result, the findings for S3Mesa and AltOGL here should be considered with a grain of salt.
Vendor: Brian Paul Renderer: Mesa S3GL V0.1 Version: 1.1 Mesa 2.6
Vendor: Brian Paul Renderer: altD3D Version: 1.2 Mesa 3.0
Performance - AltOGL
GLGears: 125 fps
ClassiCube 1.3.5/1.3.6: crash + system lockup
Minecraft in-20091223-1459: crashes on world load (normally it's much more stable according to previous videos. See here for reference: Indev on S3 ViRGE using AltOGL
Minecraft: Aside from Beta 1.7.3 with Optifine which crashes on world load, all versions of the game crash instantly.
Tux Racer: Freezes on main menu
Half Life: Instacrash
GL Excess: Instacrash
Performance - S3Mesa
GLGears: i forgor to run it 💀
ClassiCube 1.3.5/1.3.6: no crash but everything is rendered in solid white rather than with textures. performance is likely in the single digits.
Minecraft in-20091223-1459: crashes on world load (normally it's much more stable according to previous videos. See here for reference: Indev on S3 ViRGE using S3Mesa
Minecraft: Aside from Beta 1.7.3 with Optifine which crashes on world load, all versions of the game crash instantly.
Tux Racer: Renders just about everything except for the game terrain and player character. Performance seems to just barely reach double-digits.
Half Life: Instacrash; textures missing on main menu (similarly to Minecraft indev, this is an unexpected result as the game normally is able to play.)
GL Excess: Instacrash
Misc Notes
Running HWinfo32 crashes the system regardless of if KernelEX is enabled or not.
GLDirect 5 refuses to do anything other than software rendering due to the lack of higher DirectX support by the Virge.
GLDirect 3 can "run", but crashes the entire system after a few seconds in Classicube using the "game" wrapper.
GLDirect 3, unlike 5, has no license code available for free use.
I didn't have the opportunity to record during the time GLDirect 3's trial was active, and it expired already so to avoid having to reinstall everything to get a new trial (I've already tried to roll back the system calendar), I will instead be using GLDirect 2, which I have in fact found a license code for.
GLDirect 2 has a fourth option for OpenGL acceleration beyond the CAD/Game DirectX hardware acceleration and the CPU software acceleration, which is a DX8-based wrapper that appears to have later debuted fully in GLDirect 3.x and up. I think it's safe to assume that the CAD/Game DX6-based wrappers were then deprecated and received no further development after GLDirect 2.x given the pivot to a newer DirectX API.
There are a number of other wrappers available for the S3 ViRGE, and even an OpenGL MCD for Windows 2000. However, I'm sticking with the five that were listed here as they implement enough of the OpenGL spec to be (more) widely compatible with a number of games. The S3Quake wrapper, for example, implements only enough of the spec to run GLQuake, and I have never gotten it to even launch any other titles.
I really, sincerely didn't expect MC Beta 1.7.3 to launch at all even with Optifine, given how from prior testing I found that the game would instantly crash on anything higher than Classi--nevermind, it just crashed on world-load. (S3Mesa, AltOGL, TechlandD3D, TechlandS3D, GLDirect 1.x)
Non-Optifine Beta 1.7.3 crashes before even hitting the Mojang splash screen. (S3Mesa, AltOGL, TechlandD3D, GLDirect 1.x)
Non-Optifine Beta 1.7.3 gets into a world! All text is missing though as are the blocks. Performance is expectedly horrendous. (TechlandS3D)
Making batch files to handle version-switching instead of doing it by hand is nice.
Alongside the system setup for testing apparently no longer being ideal for using S3Mesa and AltOGL, comparison against some test runs done on an Athlon XP 1.1GHz system also reveal that the Virge performs far better with a faster CPU like the aforementioned Athlon XP than the 750MHz Pentium that this series of experiments is built upon. This experiment as a result may be eventually redone in the future using that faster CPU.
