tumblr not sending notifications for asks has got to be the most annoying non-feature on this terrible webbed site i’m sorry i didn’t see this until now !!

i was thinking about how zuko definitely has nightmares bc. there’s no way that he doesn’t. and i can’t remember if it’s canon and how there’s the scene in southern raiders obv but i’m more thinking abt his reuniting with iroh. both times he waits until they wake up to say his thing. an arguably very important thing. (katara’s probably should have waited until the morning but iroh’s definitely shouldn’t have imo).

in southern raiders when zuko says i waited out here all night he looks completely normal, compared to katara’s spending the night awake on appa which leaves her with giant visible eye bags. zuko even tells her to go to bed despite doing the same thing the night before. all pointing to he probably pulls all nighters a lot! he’s apparently very used to it!

okay evidence out of the way i was just thinking about baby zuko on the wani having a nightmare, waking up in the dark alone on a ship full of adults he doesn’t know, going to his uncles room just to not be alone, but once he gets there getting scared to wake him up, or thinking it’s not worth it to make him get up just so he can tell zuko to go back to sleep.

so he sits curled up outside his door until the morning, trying to be as close as possible without opening the door (which would make a loud noise bc metal and wake him up). getting used to sitting outside his door all night after he has a nightmare.

as he gets older i’m sure it becomes less about being scared and more about pride, or if it is about being scared it’s less about “i’m a kid and it’s dark” and more about “my dad was a dick and you’re not but also you could be”. he doesn’t seek out comfort. because that’s way too vulnerable. but he’ll sit outside iroh’s room as long as he doesn’t notice.

in terms of the gaang i can see western air temple/firebending masters zuko waking up and getting really sad/lonely that he doesn’t have someone to sit near. and post-boiling rock (sorry i’m zukka agendaing) sokka’s like dude what are you doing outside my tent i can see your shadow what do you Want. cue ten minutes of needling before he gets out with it and sokka’s like oh. why didn’t you ask to come inside?? it’s cold out??

and zuko finally gets to actually Talk to someone in the middle of the night and even once sokka goes back to sleep he for the first time doesn’t have that Icky Nightmare Residue and can just. be

I’m Giving Up On Cardcaptor Sakura (Trigger Warning)

So, the other day I decided to try watching Cardcaptor Sakura; giving it another shot after it failed to grab me last time I tried a few years ago.

In the years since my first watch, I’d heard a lot more about the show, both things that piqued my interrest, and things that made me weary, and almost not give the show another shot. (I honestly wish I’d listened to that instinct.)

From here there will be some slight spoilers, but more importantly, I cannot stress the TRIGGER WARNING enough! I’ll be going into disturbing territory. This show for children, somehow thought it was okay to have several of its young teen (and one child) side characters be in “relationships” with someone significantly (creepily) older than them! There are words for that. But I won’t be using them here, as they are in fact triggering to me. (Yes, the words alone trigger me enough that I don’t want them in my blog. So this anime really hurt my mental state.)

I’d already heard about Sakura’s parents. Indeed the mc’s father was a teacher who married his just 16-year old student. I orginally thought it was gonna be vague enough that one could pretend that nothing happened between them until after she graduated. But according to spoilers I sought out after encountering an even more disturbing instance just a few eps in, I found out that there was a lot more to it than that.

But that relationship aside, it got SO MUCH WORSE!

Now I already had a hard enough time watching scenes wt Sakura’s father in them, his transgressions always in the back of my mind whenever I saw him. It was a lot harder to pretend, than I’d thought; but the show had enough going for it that I kept watching.

Then one episode a teacher and his TEN YEAR OLD STUDENT!!! shared a look that was incredibly creepy and I was very alarmed. But I hoped it wasn’t actually what it looked like and kept watching. But it kept being alluded to, until I finally did some googling to see if it was actually going in that direction, and it turned out it really was! Not only that but the show actively tries to portray those disturbing relationships as romantic! WTF?! WTF?! WTF?! WHYYYYY?!!!!

(Oh and apparently Sakura’s brother was preyed upon by his female teacher pre series start. But I didn’t even reach that point. Glad I didn’t!)

For my part I’m out. Never ever returning to this series again, it’s just not worth it! :(

I was looking forward to seeing Sakura and Tomoya grow and mature, but I just can’t. Eh, I prefer Sakura in Tsubasa anyway. I’ve got the first nine volumes of that manga and I’m planning to get back into it.

As for magical girls, I think I’ll stick to rewatches of Nanoha and Sailor Moon, wt some occasional Precure. (Also Madoka ftw! The show not the movies!)

I’ll be be searching out some new (to me) magical girl shows, but I will not be watching any made by clamp.

For AUs... How about an AU where Keiji and Megumi both survive the First Trial? I'd like your take on that :)

BUT SERIOUSLY TY THIS IS SO INTERESTING!! i saw your post on this already and commented on it then (in the tags ofc JGVKDDJDJ), bUT that was the meta of yours that inspired me to think that, maybe, keiji wouldn't be the way he is without that particular first trial and its outcome..? so i'll be operating under that assumption for these scenarios, so as not to feed a fed horse! (as peta would say,)

this does seem like quite the task, considering that it would require both conceptualizing megumi when we have minimal information about her, and reconceptualizing keiji to the keiji before the death game, when we also have minimal information on how he thinks in general... (and his characterization in this is all based on a theory to begin with, so it's not the most steady foundation lol)

of course, their first trial would need to be something else for this au… to keep things simple, it'd be best if it was neutral– neither him saving or not saving megumi, to neither restore nor forsake his faith in himself. megumi saving him would probably leave some positive impression of her on him too, so a trial which includes none of those things would be mosy fitting. but the trial itself isn't what's interesting, so i won't go into it further djdksbdk.

assuming they don't have a trial together, they'd meet each other the first time with everyone else-- i'm sure megumi would recognize keiji after the initial shock of how different he looks. and even if keiji tried to distance himself from her, she'd mention she knows keiji right away. i do think she'd have quite a bit of logic in her, but not an unsympathetic amount! however, she has been shown to throw morality to the wind when protecting keiji in the past (though asunaro may have been involved in the coverup in ways we don't yet know), so i think she'd do something similar here. she'd say she knows him and possibly that he's a police officer to solidify his standings amongst the other participants, assuming that keiji doesn't lie for himself first.

speaking of what keiji would do… so, i'm reconceptualizing him as more solemn and maybe a bit less guarded? however, it's also important to keep some level of his chill with his stupid grin and avoidance, because that constitutes a large part of how he copes with his trauma. a keiji wrestling between solemn genuineness and avoidant nonchalance, protector and sacrificer, logic and emotion! a mid-way between the two extremes of before the shooting and during the normal death game. definitely more stoic, though… less smiley but not brooding either. i think a more stoic, perhaps more reserved personality pre-death game would make a lot of sense for keiji, considering that he has absolutely no friends.

BUT ANYWAY!! back to what i was saying– i think megumi would lie in keiji's favour, because she wants to get him out of there alive (sympathetic megumi ftw!) but she may hold it over his head a bit, if only to keep him in line with her plans by means of guilt. it's worth it, though, if she can make up for what happened with the shooting– really, she couldn't believe it when she saw keiji! after he quit, i bet they'd barely seen each other since. the bags under his eyes make his face look so gaunt and haunted compared to how he was when he was a kid…

she still treats him like a kid, too. they slowly fall into the mentor-pupil relationship again they had before, by habit, like ancient cogs beginning to turn for the first time in years. but, this isn't all easygoing, of course.

i don't think megumi would apologise for the coverup. at least, not right away. she seemed very keen on ignoring it back when the shooting happened, so despite any guilt she'd have around the incident, she doesn't bring it up. keiji's somewhat content to keep it that way as well, considering that facing what he did would shatter him. but being with megumi is like facing the shooting… i'm sure being with her like that would bring up bad memories and relight slumbering resentment. he'd eventually want an apology, an explanation, something… how soon "eventually," would be, though, i'm not sure. especially considering that keiji wants to survive, and megumi will help him do that.

though, i think keiji's will to live in this scenario would be a little weaker, oddly enough. because when he kills megumi, that plunges him into the confirmation of himself as a sinner-- he has more to run from, and if he's killed two people now for the sake of his well-being (first because he feared for his life, second in hopes of being rid of his trauma), why not do it again? he's not going to dwell on it anyway, he's not going to look…

but keiji in this scenario is wrestling with himself. he'd still like to be a protector. maybe… it's still possible? maybe he's not damned just yet? maybe there's worth in sacrificing his life for the more vulnerable.

and that internal conflict could potentially clash harshly against megumi's goals of getting them out alive by any means necessary. she's not malicious, and she wouldn't try to get someone killed for the fuck of it, but when it comes down to it, she's just there for them.

i do think megumi would feel guilty for the children, though… gin and kanna are so young. sara is so bright-eyed and clever, it almost reminds her of what keiji was like back then… but she's willing to shoulder the guilt of murder for keiji this time, if only to finally atone for what she did to him and to save herself as well.

there's a few ways this could go though!! i have about four. 1) megumi is ruthlessly logical as keiji is in the actual game, and keiji goes along with it for the sake of his own survival. they end up being the sole survivors of the death game; keiji hates megumi and is entirely broken // 2) same as the last one except the rest of them thwart megumi and keiji's evil plans and maybe keiji and / or megumi die.. :v // 3) megumi is still ruthlessly logical BUT keiji's resentment of megumi and his morals push him away from her and he works against her to protect everyone // 4) megumi starts out logically, but noticing how keiji has changed as a result of his trauma and how cold he's become (she can see the same strains of her "forget morality, save yourself" logic in him and some of his decisions) she decides to let herself fall to emotion and either sacrifices herself for keiji or someone else.

and, some misc. things i didn't get to mention above....!!

i REALLY loved your idea of megumi being team mom. with the above in mind, it's exactly parallel to keiji's role in the normal death game! a should-be protector wracked by guilt who abuses their power regardless. and to think of keiji potentially taking on the role of the abuser while also possibly being one of the vulnerable underneath the force of that power… it's just really interesting!

depressing parallels aside though, i think megumi would be a nice sensible mom figure for this group of idiots sjfhddj. maybe a little blunt or initially distant, but ultimately caring.

as for her role in a wider sense, i think megumi would actually be more trustworthy than keiji is in the normal death game. although she has the disadvantage of sexism working against her, she's actually in a police outfit and lacks the shady appearance. i'm certain she could conduct herself in a way that would garner everyone's trust-- she wouldn't have any questions she needed to dodge like keiji in the main game, unless keiji brought up the shooting, but even then, that's much less severe than murder. there wouldn't be any creepy flirting with her either, not only because there's no questions to dodge in the first place, but i think she'd opt to use her authority to harshly shut down any opposition, like she did with keiji after the shooting. and when that fails, she'd fall back on logical and / or manipulative rebuttals. i also think a large part of why nao and reko specifically don't like keiji is because he's a man! a creepy man at that, and that feeling really is justified, but the point is that megumi's a woman, a respectable woman, so they wouldn't have the same qualms with her. she could also prove herself to be a more capable leader than sara, being older and still having a cool head. she'd very much come off as a reliable leader if she tried to, i think.

but back to happier things!! i think keiji would take on a less authoritative role if under megumi's wing. it's hard to say exactly how his role would change, considering that we don't know if keiji saw the percentage papers normally, and if he did in this au, would megumi as well and would they both try to cling onto sara for survival's sake? BUT i'm not going to get into that, i just want to say that i think it'd be neat if keiji took up an older brother position to in group! kind of the same as the normal death game, except he has less control over what the group does and is more on the same standings as the other participants. i think he'd get closer to being a genuine protector in this scenario, fail sooner at his attempts to avoid emotional attachments to the other participants, and i also think he'd do a lot less of the creepy flirting!! because really, the only reason he did that anyway was to dodge questions, and that'd be a lot less necessary if 1) he had dependable megumi vouching for him from the beginning, therefore making him less suspicious to the others // 2) megumi's death would no longer be a topic of concern cos it didn't happen! // 3) if someone attempted to dig up info about his past or something of the sort, something that could get in the way of the group's trust of him and therefore keiji and megumi's chances of survival, megumi could likely shut it down as she has a good reputation amongst the group. besides, the only one who would say shit like that is shin, and people don't trust him very much anyways sjfjsbfnd.

i think keiji and sara would potentially have a less manipulative and more wholesome friendship in this au ahhh ;<;

as much as a manipulative dick megumi is to keiji in this au, she gets softer when his hallucinations seem to be affecting him more, or when he has nightmares. (CAN YOU TELL I'M A SUCKER FOR FLAWED BUT GENUINE MENTORSHIPS YET)

i've started to become STAUNCHLY AGAINST the notion that keiji killed megumi maliciously or that he would kill megumi maliciously!! because logically, it'd probably be more beneficial to have such a trustworthy ally in the death game (maybe not trustworthy to him, but to everyone else) and emotionally, I JUST THINK THEY'D HAVE BEEN CLOSE BEFORE OKAY AND I DON'T LIKE THE IDEA THAT HE'D KILL HER 😭😭 (that's more my emotions than his LOL, but i think it's so important that megumi's murder was an inactive murder that keiji was unsure of to the moment it happened and beyond!! you could say his angst about killing megumi during the 2nd main game is more about him killing another person, regardless of whether or not it was megumi, BUT i like to think the fact that it was megumi SPECIFICALLY was significant to him.) so that's why throughout i haven't really entertained the idea of him trying to kill her or anything like that, especially considering the theory i'm weaving this au under, which dictates keiji would likely be a lil softer + more emotional :>

CONSIDER,,, in that scenario i posed where megumi sacrifices herself for someone / keiji: while she's dying or before her death, she hugs keiji and tells him she's sorry, it wasn't his fault. no one's ever told him this before because he's refused to talk about what happened with anyone after her dismissal of it. after she says that, though, it feels as though he's let out a breath he's been holding for years and some of the weight of the shooting is finally gone.

that's all i can think to say at the moment, SO… to sum things up– a tl;dr, if you will--

Writing Ask Game

A little while ago I was tagged by @stardustloki to answer these questions about fanfic, and decided they'd be quite good questions to write about my original stuff as well, so here you go! (Some questions were deleted because I gave the same answers, or because they weren’t relevant to original stuff)

At what age did you start writing?

I think ALL children write stories at some point or another when they're very young, but the first story I remember finishing (that wasn't for school) was about two stowaways on a big tanker ship who find a girl who's been living in the bowels of the ship, sneaking around and making her home in the hidden corners where nobody can find her. I think I was 14 or so when I wrote it, and I can't remember how it ended - and it's one I don't have any more because I used to hand my stories around school and it sort of never came back to me!

What is your favorite book?

Oh god… OK, I can’t choose just one! So here’s a bunch! Radio Silence by Alice Oseman, I just love literally everything about this story, and I can't really talk about my favourite part without spoiling a major plot point. But Aled Last deserves the world, and Francis' mum is the mum I want to be - she supports her daughter, and even helps her in a way that literally never happens in YA books! You SO RARELY get a parent helping their child against another adult, but they SHOULD.

Also The Trees, by Ali Shaw, which is wonderful and creepy and disturbing. And The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue by Makenzie Lee, which is sweet and bonkers. And Marian Keyes' books - This Charming Man was traumatic and I can't read it again BUT it was SO clever and I loved the resolution - women working together ftw! Things by Kate Atkinson are always brilliant but I can't choose a favourite, and also anything in the Discworld series! OK, I'm going to stop now, or it'll get silly...

What stories do you avoid like the plague?

I can't watch horror movies, and I find creepy books very hard to deal with as well. The pictures in Miss Peregrine's School for Peculiar Children was about my limit, and without the story that went with them I think I would have had nightmares! I've tried reading Mills and Boon books but I found it REALLY hard to believe in the romance at all, it was like they ended up together because... reasons? But one of them had the guy allow this girl to believe that Tara was his wife back at home, she got insanely jealous and really bitchy (like dude... you're not even together, chill?) and then it turns out Tara was his dog. Why? Why would you do that to each other? Do you LIKE each other? Are you SURE??

Ahem.

(Read Elegance by Kathleen Tessaro instead. Their relationship was cute. Or If You Could See Me Now by Cecelia Ahern! So cute!)

I also tend to avoid those books about abused children. Triggery!

What story do you wish to write but feel like you won’t manage?

I have SO MANY novel ideas, and I'm really precious about most of them (I WILL get to them, just... it takes me a while, OK?!) But one book that I've wanted to write and been too scared to attempt is called Morningstar. It's actually inspired by a fanfic I wrote where Loki and Jesus are good friends (and no, it's not religion bashing, I may be a pagan but I think Jesus is a pretty great character) called Happy Birthday, Jesus! (It was written on Christmas Eve, and it's really silly and fluffy!)

The thing is, I wanted to write a prequel about how they became friends. And then I ended up going to church with a friend and reading the bible (it was a book and it was RIGHT THERE don't judge me) and noticing a lot of references to punishing the children of the devil for the actions of their father. Distressing, for a start, but also reminded me of the Lokasenna.

So it turned into an idea where Lucifer decides to come and visit this so-called Son of God, and finds him at age 13, when he's annoying the hell out of all the priests by being a little too well-informed. Lucifer joins in and spreads discord and actually quite likes the kid, and over the years, he keeps in touch with him. Then, when Jesus is an adult, Lucifer's children are killed, and he's trapped (similar to how Loki was, with the snake venom) and Jesus comes to help him get out. Lucifer starts hanging around with the disciples. He annoys the absolute hell out of Peter for laughs, because Peter's really pious, he gets on really well with Mary Magdalene and Levi, the ex-tax collector. Jesus is just kind and happy to everyone, and while he listens to Lucifer ranting, he always argues with him - they just never let their very opposing views get in the way of their friendship. When Jesus goes out into the desert, Lucifer tempts him because he's worried about him, and angry, and eventually Jesus tells him to leave him alone because doing this is important to him.

It would change nothing about the story. Jesus still dies and is resurrected. It's just that Lucifer's around the whole time, being a twisty, sarcastic, bitchy arsehole, with fundamentally different views to Jesus, and still be his friend on a personal level. There would probably also be some natural disasters when Jesus dies.

However, I'm terrified of doing this story wrong! I would end up insulting a large group of people and aaahhhh! Maybe I'll write it when I'm an old woman and don't give two shits what people think of me any more...

What has been your favorite story to write so far?

Hmmm... probably Zero Degrees - it involved a lot more research than any of the others, because I decided to use references to so many different gods, but it was also one of the most visually creative things I've ever done! I was able to just go crazy, imagining dragons fighting giant spiders in a magical library, and rituals where the hair of a summer god is woven into gloves. It was so much fun! And I have no idea where most of it came from, but it made me realise I enjoy writing magic and magical realism way more than I thought I would!

On the other hand, The Forest Hotel is the only book I've ever written where it turned out pretty much how I wanted it to, practically on the first draft! I did like 7 edits anyway, but they weren't huge plot edits, more adding things in, and I'm still happy with how it turned out!

Why did you start writing? Why are you still writing?

…I really wanted to. That’s basically it? It seems like the more I write, the more ideas I get, and I love that feeling of creating something that I would want to read. These characters live in my head and I get to just peer into their world every now and again to see how they're doing, and it's just so enriching to me. I love it. I write because I want to, and I publish because it brings in a little bit of money and therefore justifies me writing a bit more ;)

Where they first met and how?Either on the battlefield in canon, or through their overbearing and obnoxious older brothers. OR. Maybe they’re the ones who met at the river in an alternate to canon, ooooooo me like.

How long their ‘flirting’ phase was before feelings got involvedI mean. They’re forever in flirting phase. Even after feelings get involved, they’re too busy being snarky at each other to notice.

Who fell for who first (if applicable)?Izuna fell first, and fell hard. Tobirama took a lot more time, especially considering he was convinced Izuna still hated him.Where their first date was and what it was like?Date who? They don’t go on dates. They go angry spar and end up disappearing into the woods for a while, and come out looking like they’ve been wrestling in the bushes.

Who asks who out and how (with a sign? Spelled out on a cake? Just a simple ‘will you go out with me’?)Izuna just shows up at Tobirama’s door step with his stuff one day and says he’s moving in. That’s the first and only ‘asking out’ either of them do.

Who proposes first?Hashirama. Hashirama proposes they both get married. That’s the only way they’re making it official.

If they keep/kept their relationship secret or let everyone know right away?I feel like anyone related to Hashirama would default to keeping it secret at least for a few months from him. He’s just too much of a headache to handle.

Where the proposal happens and how (kiss cam at a baseball game? on a Hillside surrounded by ducks? At a Disney park?)It happens at Hashirama’s house. Because he dragged them both there, along with Madara. And sobs about wanting it to be official.

They both have a lot of stuff to figure out between them, especially in a more canon universe. They were raised to kill each other, and fought one another over and over - literally hated each other at some point.

If they argue about anythingYes. All the time, even when it’s not serious. It’s practically foreplay to them.

Who leaves more marks (lipstick, hickeys, scratchmarks etc.)?Izuna, somewhat cause (after the fact) it annoys Tobirama.

What their favourite nonsexual activity isEither random debates just for the hell of it, or training.

How long they stay mad at each otherHow long they appear mad at each other: quite a while. How long they’re actually mad at each other: not very long tbh.

What their usual coffee/tea orders areIzuna gave up caffeine after seeing what it does to Tobirama, who practically injects it into his veins to keep working. Tobirama’s taste buds call out for anything with the blessed wake juice, no matter how the precious liquid is flavored.

If they ever have any children togetherNah

If they have any special pet names for each otherIzuna loves making up random shit to call Tobirama, and laughs at the faces it earns him.

If they ever split up and/or get back togetherOnce an Uchiha’s in love, they tend to stick with it. So no.

What their shared living space is like (Messy? Clean? What kind of decor?)Izuna’s messy, and Tobirama’s too busy with work or being exhausted to clean up a lot. It’s a bit passed lived in, but no where near a pigsty

Darksiders III OST appreciation

So I’ve been listening to the Darksiders III soundtrack for the last couple of hours while writing the next chapter of Unsettled and, frankly, I find the amount of “negative” comments on Youtube (”Darksiders II was so much better”, “not nearly as good as Jesper Kyd”, etc.) kind of unwarranted, so here’s some Darksiders III soundtrack appreciation:

1) Fury’s theme is awesome! It fits her so well! It sounds like Prince of Persia meets Darksiders I and it’s fantastic! 10/10 can listen on repeat for hours.

2) “The Horseman” is. so. freaking. good! Seriously. It gives such a great impression of how powerful and foreboding the Horsemen can be. Like, everybody in the Darksidersverse knows that when one of those four shows up, shit’s about to hit the fan and this theme matches that mood perfectly. It makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

3) “Come play with us”: Creepy children’s music box ftw.

4) “Requiem Aeternam”: RIP Rampage :’(

5) “The Submerged Realm”: aka the only non-frustrating thing about the underwater levels.

6) “Illusions of Power”: 4 minutes and 43 seconds of distilled magic. Bonus points for epic and heartwarming horsemen sibling reunion (sort of).

7) “Ulthane”: something so pure and peaceful should not exist in the middle of the Apocalypse, yet here we are.

8) “Maker’s Hideout”: see 7), now with some badass drums and heart-wrenching violins. I approve.

9) “Haven City”: sad violins and a lost female voice echoing over the wind is never not an appropriate soundtrack for New York 10 years after the demon apocalypse.

10) Last but not least, all the 7 sins having such distinctive themes, so I’m just gonna list a few things here about every single one:

“Why so envious”: I never noticed how awesome this track was until I was not trying to reach Envy in time to avoid her fucking AOE instant kill and actually had time to listen to it, but it is absolutely menacing.

“Sloth”: sounds lazy, hits hard. A+ for characterization.

“Wrath”: if there was ever a videogame boss that needed “dies irae” chanting in the background, it was Wrath. Epic.

“Gluttony”: the weakest of the themes, or maybe that’s just my frustration from having had to replay this fight an estimated 5,000 times spilling over. Definitely does convey the feeling that Fury is, in terms of physical size, little more than an ant compared to this guy.

“Lust”: Perfection. So seductive and yet badass. Love it love it love it love it. Probably the most memorably theme after Fury’s.

“Pride”: Everybody else may be to humble to break out the full orchestra AND the choir, but Pride sure ain’t.

“Avarice”: For some reason this theme just crawls under my skin.

“Envy”: Absolutely relentless. Draws inspiration from all the other themes, so bonus points for thematic appropriateness.

In conclusion: Excellent job, Cris Velasco! I must admit, the soundtrack for Darksiders I fell very flat for me, so it’s great to see a composer improve and grow so much. I love the soundtrack for Darksiders III. And yes, I like it more than the one for Darksiders II. That one had some epic tracks (”The Corruption”, “Trouble in Eden”, “Death Brings Hope” and the guardian boss theme), but overall, the soundtrack of Darksiders III is much more memorable, in my opinion.

One caveat: WHY THE FUCK IS THAT EPIC ENDING THEME WITH THE BADASS VIOLINS NOT ON THE SOUNDTRACK?!!!! Whose insane idea was it to not include that?

My Review:

I want more!! I'm so glad this is going to have a sequel because I am not ready to be done with this world and these characters yet. I started Killing November casually. I was actually reading something else, but I often like to have a couple books going at once, and I had received an ARC from Netgalley so I figured I should get to it. I eventually abandoned that other book entirely. I could not put this one down. I love the creepy assassin school concept. And the mystery and intrigue was just so well done; perfect pacing, great characterization. If a mystery is *too* mysterious, meaning the audience is given nothing and just dragged through endless pages with no idea what's going on, I tend to stop caring and give up. I was concerned that would be an issue here, but it wasn't. It was baffling with the right amount of crumbs of information thrown in here and there. I also genuinely cared about the characters and their relationships. I thought they were all really well done. I also loved that there was actual history and things woven throughout the narrative. I love when I can read an enjoyable fiction book and still learn things. (And yes, I actually look up the info to verify if it's real or just created/manipulated for the story. I'm impressed with the knowledge/research that went into this book.) I haven't read anything by this author before, but I am very interested in picking up her other works now. And I will definitely be picking up the sequel to this one. I would highly recommend this to anyone interested in contemporary mysteries or things with a secret society vibe. It actually really made me want to finish watching Deadly Class. Different concept, but similar vibe. Assassin schools ftw.

Strange Legacy 2.2

I’m sure you’re all just dying to find out how Betelgeuse’s return to the legacy lot went. But first, let’s check in with generation 2 spare Alpheratz, shown here in his graduation duds cuddling with college placeholder Christy Pons.

Many Romance spares from other legacies never marry, but in this family, woohoo is strictly verboten outside the bonds of holy matrimony, so Alpheratz was set on marriage and children from the start. Unfortunately, as detailed in chapter 2.1, the love of his life is engaged to his brother, so he had to settle for the next best thing... her adult townie lookalike.

Creepy, yes, but despite the wrongness of the whole situation I actually enjoyed playing their little family. Their wedding wasn’t anything fancy, just your basic “I’m sick of this legacy already” sidewalk fare next to the trash can and mailbox, but the groom got his woohoo and the bride got her lifelong partner to talk about grilled cheese with, so I call it a success.

They had two adorable daughters who they named Bellatrix and Cursa, in keeping with the alphabetical and astronomical theme of the legacy.

Unfortunately their birthday parties tended to invite drama, and at Cursa’s toddler-to-child birthday, an out-of-control grandpa Zaniah did this:

Yes, that is the creepy townie who showed up to his wedding in a white gown. I’m sure you’re just as shocked as I am.

��I can’t believe you would do this to me! And at our granddaughter’s birthday party!”

Yeah, totally unexpected. It’s not like Zaniah is a garbage person, or that they’ve been heart farting over each other and undermining your marriage since forever. This is completely out of character for our legacy founder. Mmm hmmmm.

Although I will say it was oddly sweet watching Demi bitch Tamara out for horning in on her mother in law’s man. Strange spouses gotta stick together!

Back on the main lot, Angeline moved in and she and Betelgeuse are working hard at their careers. I want them to both be permaplat before they get married and start reproducing like crazy. Shouldn’t be too hard, since they both got 4.0′s in college and have mad skills in everything.

Zaniah isn’t convinced of Angeline’s worthiness to be a Strange spouse, though.

“Didn’t she kiss your brother?”

“No, Dad, she didn’t. Angeline would never do that to me. And you’re one to talk! We all heard about how you cheated on mom at the birthday party.”

“I would never. That’s just what that harridan your brother married is spreading around because she’s jealous she wasn’t able to marry into the legacy home. Never trust a woman’s gossip, Betelgeuse. I know I’ve taught you this lesson before.”

Yeah, that might have worked if Bete wasn’t a total mama’s boy. He’s been there to witness nearly all of Sharon’s unhealthy coping mechanisms ever since the birthday party. She’s always thinking about that kiss, usually while drinking herself into a stupor.

And so Zaniah tries his schtick out on Angeline.

“Why Angeline, what a lovely pair of lips you have. It’s no wonder BOTH of my sons were unable to resist them. If only you were able to resist both of my sons.”

“Ha, ha! That’s so funny, Mr. Strange. I know you have to be joking because there’s no way a proven adulterer would be lecturing me about the morality of my dating life before I even got engaged.”

“Watch your tone, missy.”

“No, you watch yours, old man. You think you’re hot stuff because you’re a legacy founder? I’m a hot downtownie, I’ve been around since 2005, and I’ve married into a million of these things. You better think long and hard before you start playing games with me, because I will END YOU.”

Yeesh. Well, I think she’s scared him off of trying to come between her and the legacy fortune ever again. Moving on.

Sharon reached the top of the Journalism career, fulfilling her lifetime want.

She then apparently decided that what with her dead marriage and all she had nothing left to live for, and promptly started dying in the bathroom.

“Really? Your first generation spouse is dying before the heir even gets married? That’s pathetic.”

Shut up, Grim, it’s hard when you have Real Sickness installed! You should know this from my apocalegacy!

Thankfully everyone’s favorite mama’s boy was there to save Sharon from my ineptitude and spare her a grisly fate.

He even went above and beyond and cured her ills, literally, with a little Grandma’s Comfort Soup.

Unfortunately, even with her sickness cured, her heart was still broken, and I think we all know Zaniah wasn’t capable of mending it without help.

Fortunately, super son comes to the rescue again with some well placed couples’ counseling. Psychology degree FTW!

Practicing therapy on your own parents... it’s a little unethical, but what can I say? That’s never been a problem for this family.

Awww. Look how happy Bete is to have helped. And with him and Angie both poised to reach level 10 in their careers tomorrow, there’s no better time to restore the household’s relationship harmony!

Once Zaniah’s done getting alien abducted again, natch.

Sure enough, Captain Hero and Chief of Staff did their thing the following day, and I was really looking forward to their Barbie Dream Wedding.

I even decked out the backyard with a sweet ass decorative pond. Look at it! That thing took me two hours. I was pumped.

Of course Zaniah just had to pick a fight with his existing daughter in law, because he can’t let a special event go by without ruining it. Looks like he’s complaining that she’s wearing “too much” makeup. Why am I not surprised?

More things I wish I was surprised about: College placeholder Christy showing up in an exact replica of Angeline’s gown. What is it with the women in this town? Begone, thot!

And so the ceremony -- wait a minute, what’s that happening in the corner?

God. Damn. It. Alpheratz! You had ONE job! Be appropriate at your brother’s wedding.

“Angeline was supposed to be mine! If I can’t have her, then you’d better believe I’m going to ruin my wimp of a brother’s wedding to her!”

UGH, and of course it’s with inappropriate Christy in the white gown. Why can’t my Sims be faithful to their partners at family functions?

Poor Demi was a real trooper, though. Her heart was breaking into a million pieces, but she stayed in her chair and politely clapped until the bitter end, because she wanted Betelgeuse and Angeline to have their moment. It’s odd having a truly classy person in the family for once.

Of course, even classy dames like Demi have their limits, as Alpheratz learned the hard way the second the ceremony was finished.

Oof, right in the moneymaker. And please notice in the background poor Bellatrix and Cursa tearfully fleeing the scene.

Bellatrix is a mean little Scorpio who takes after her father’s side of the family, so she was mainly furious, but poor Cursa just cried and cried. Demi came over to comfort her daughters, and I was torn between delight at the cuteness of this interaction that I had never seen before and sadness for what my drama-loving play style had done to my poor innocent babies.

I’M A MONSTER.

But how much did their other relatives care?

I’ll give you three guesses, and the first two don’t count.

Demi was actually so incredibly classy that she stopped inside to have a slice of cake and toast to the newlyweds before she said goodbye to the hosts. Oh, Demi, you are so much better than this trash family deserves.

“Yes, unfortunately I do have to go. But I want to wish you every joy and happiness together. There’s nothing better than a marriage that goes right, and nothing worse than when one goes wrong. May you always stay honest and true to each other.”

I don’t think they’ll have any trouble with that nowadays... thank God. You may recall that Angeline was also in love with Alpheratz at the time of his kiss with Christy the homewrecker, and now she hates him just as much as Demi does. I guess it’s true what they say: every cloud has a silver lining, and every broken family has a correspondingly broken incestuous love triangle.

With a little one officially on the way, Angeline was free to focus on less breedertastic legacy duties, like making sure everyone had their portraits in order. Competent artist that she is, she finished that little project before she even started showing.

Good thing, too, because she didn’t have the easiest pregnancy in her later trimesters.

It was definitely a relief when the birth came.

I was less than thrilled that Zaniah directed his applause at his son while turning his back on his daughter in law, the person who actually gave birth, but hey, that’s Zaniah for you.

Anyway, welcome to the family, Cassiopeia Strange!

Little Cassie turned out to be a little bit of a daddy’s girl, and who could blame her? Unlike his own father, Betelgeuse is an actual Family Sim with actual Family Sim wants, and he loves nothing more than showering his daughter with affection.

Soon after, Angeline got pretty busy being pregnant with #2 and working on getting that impossible want point for her secondary aspiration, so she didn’t have as much time for Cassie...

...but even when she did, Cassie was usually thinking about Betelgeuse.

Zaniah has been similarly busy working on his secondary impossible want, among other legacy business. He’s reaching the end of his lifespan and I wanted to make sure to wring every last point possible out of him.

He wrote his novel, as required for the storyteller handicap.

He also got abducted a third time, but unfortunately, no matter how much I made him stargaze at night, there was no fourth or fifth time for that one truly impossible knowledge want of 5 Abductions.

C’est la vie. Although he did survive to see the birth of Betelgeuse and Angeline’s second daughter, Diadem. Yes, daughter. I was hoping we wouldn’t have to have more than three kids, but oh well.

His last action on Sim Earth was becoming best friends with one of his four granddaughters. Ha! Serves you right to die before ever meeting your grandson and third generation heir, you old hypocrite!

Please enjoy this establishing shot that proves I put his grave next to the legacy tree in the backyard... and also that I collected 25 elixirs for a collection point from his aspiration bank before he kicked the bucket.

Mmm, sweet legacy points.

Sharon and Cassie were devastated, but I don’t think anyone else is going to miss the old coot. Particularly since it’s also a birthday party night!

Alpheratz and Demi came by, God knows why, and Alpheratz was so enraged to find that Angeline was pregnant by his brother again that he just had to slap her around a bit.

Classy. This family is so classy.

Adultery everywhere, drinking while pregnant, what social taboos haven’t the Stranges crossed with impunity? I just hope the baby comes out okay. It’s crazy to me that Maxis won’t let pregnant ladies change the cat litter or use the hot tub, but apparently “juice” and “bubbles” are just what the doctor ordered.

But fear not, no amount of dysfunction will ever stop the younger Stranges from getting every privilege in life offered to them on a silver platter! As long as your family is rich, you’re set! Just like in real life.

And may I please just single Demi out for being once, twice, three times a lady yet again? Look at her, autonomously feeding her hungry niece out of the goodness of her heart! It’s like she doesn’t even know what she married into.

Later that night, the house gets burglarized.

Even though Betelgeuse is Captain Hero, the Fearless handicap prevents us from using any alarms and makes burglaries a real pain in the ass. Sharon just barely managed to call the police in time to catch the thief. Why does she need to call a low ranking officer when they have Captain Hero in the house? Who knows. I’ll chalk it up to the booze.

The next morning, the kids prove that they know exactly which family they were born into by rolling identical wants to murder the burglar with the cowplant. Yeesh.

Betelgeuse attempts to teach Cassie a healthier way to deal with her feelings by showing her the ins and outs of investigative police work.

Meanwhile, Angeline gives birth to... ANOTHER girl, seriously? I’m trying to run a patriarchy over here!

I’m sorry I’m not more excited over your birth, Electra, it’s just that I kind of hate dealing with multiple toddlers at once and I don’t like doing it more than once per generation.

At least the girls are cute. Here’s Diadem as a child, showing off her gymnastic skills.

I love watching Di and Cassie play with the dollhouse every morning and night before bed. It’s so wholesome!

Also adorable: Grandma Sharon tucking her grandbabies in whenever she gets a chance. Awww. We’ll just ignore that she probably reeks of booze the whole time.

Much less adorable: Zaniah scaring the crap out of his pregnant daughter in law on his first night haunting. Zaniah! I know you’re a fake Family Sim, but the least you could do is not sabotage your own legacy.

Oh, thank God, it’s finally a boy.

This little rugrat is named Fornax, and he is definitely the heir because I am done, done, D-O-N-E done with these two having children. They’re cute and all, but four is more than enough.

Cassie grew up and rolls Romance, which I don’t think suits her. She seems much more like a Family Sim to me. She’s always rolling wants to interact with her parents and siblings, and sure, she’s a mean little Scorpio, just like dad and gramps, but that’s never stopped her from -- hang on.

What’s that happening in the back of the lot?

Oh, nothing, just Grandma Sharon quietly dying while no one but me cares. You were a good Sim, Sharon, always fun to play. A real booze hound, but I’ll miss you very much.

And her granddaughters who cared so much for her... just kept playing Spin Me Around and didn’t stop until they got their inheritance. 

That’s cold. Maybe Cassie wouldn’t make such a great Family Sim.

Just to test drive the whole Romance thing, I set her up with patriarchy-approved Romeo Montague, and she seemed to like him okay.

They had a very enjoyable date, but when it was time for him to go, she shooed him away in a less than polite manner.

“Get OUT of here, you disgusting boy, and don’t think I’m going to call you again! My family is way richer than yours anyway.”

Yeah, I don’t think Romance is Cassie’s thing.

So after Fornax’s birthday party, when her aspiration finally dipped back down into the green, I went ahead and cheesed her.

No regrets. This family does not need any more Romance Sims -- a lesson that I will be sure to impart on our young heir, Fornax, as well, since he’s our one and only shot at continuing the legacy.

Fornax, sadly, did not have a Roof Raiser of a birthday party, and so I will be going for a different Master Point with him. I’m thinking Child Prodigy, since so many of his relatives have maxed out skills and more career reward skill objects than you can shake a stick at.

Plus, look at what the little stinker always wanted to talk about in his toddler years. Algebra? Yeah, that’s a nerd if I’ve ever seen one.

He is an EXTREMELY good sport about the whole spending his entire childhood studying and skilling thing.

I think Diadem would have made a good child prodigy too, since she rolled knowledge and is ALWAYS congratulating everyone on being overachievers, but sadly, she is a girl and therefore can’t be heir in this deeply unfair patriarchal legacy.

Electra, meanwhile, became a Pleasure Sim with a lifetime want of 50 First Dates. Curse you, Adam Sandler, for inspiring that LTW from hell!

We’re fulfilling it, though. You know we are. I’ve never been able to resist those impossible want points.

“Tybalt, I know Electra brought you home on the schoolbus for a freebie date and all, but I really think you should leave before my grandpa scares you to death. It’s just not safe for a matriarchal guy like you to be here at night.”

“You sure, Cass? Diadem doesn’t seem to mind getting scared.”

“That’s because she’s a freak, Ty. Now beat it.”

“Okay, but you have to promise you won’t tell Bells about this. Electra promised it was going to be strictly platonic!”

Yep, that’s right, Tybalt is dating none other than Alpheratz’s daughter Bellatrix, who grew up into a Fortune Sim who fell head over heels for the fiery Capulet. That would have been a problem if she was born into the main household, but Alpheratz never cared much for legacy rules so he’s perfectly fine with his children dating matriarchal Maxis-mades.

Not that Cursa would ever be in danger of settling down with one. She’s Romance, just like dad, and while she does go out with Tybalt and Bellatrix, she prefers doing her own thing, usually on the karaoke machine.

And how are Alpheratz and Demi? Obviously they are still married, because divorce is anathema in the legacy family, but they actually surprised me by being able to patch things up somewhat.

Okay, maybe they patched things up a lot.

Back on the main lot, Fornax continues his Child Prodigy studies, and Electra continues her string of meaningless dates.

She met many an interesting character downtown, including this dorky vampire who only wanted to talk about school.

“You must tell me about your schoolverk. I haff such an interest in how theese thinks haff changtt since I vos a boy, back in Baffaria.”

“Wow, okay. I have to tell you that as a Pleasure Sim, I hate school with every fiber of my being, but can I introduce you to my sister? I think the two of you would get along like a house on fire!”

Indeed they would, especially since Diadem managed to get herself alien abducted and has therefore become an excellent candidate for the Ivy League master point mini-challenge!

“I get to become a vampire? Sweet.”

I was hyped for the vamping, but unfortunately my vampire skin default left a lot to be desired. Apparently it makes everyone an opaque pearly white regardless of original skintone. Lame!

Pardon me while I switch some files around.

“Ahhhh. Much better. Grandma Sharon must be so proud of me.”

I’m sure she’s proud of all of you, because the time to grow Fornax up and get that master point has come! Once he grows up platinum, we’ll be ready to ship everyone except little miss I Was A Teenage Vampire off to college. It’s been a whirlwind of a generation.

Let me just show off a couple awkward shots proving that he maximized everything he was supposed to...

And away we go! Fucking nailed it!

Next time: How will Fornax cope with going straight from being ten years old to becoming a college student? Will I be able to get Cassie her 200 sandwiches and Electra her 50 dates without driving myself crazy? And what’s with the mystery surrounding Alpheratz and Demi’s third child?

I think that Alec really is Maryse’s favorite. She loves all her children dearly but just like Izzy’s Robert’s dearest child, I think Alec’s Maryse’s. ‘Cause they’re so similar they understand each other best. That doesn’t mean they always agree with each other, not at all, but there’s this unspoken connection between them. Like when Alec guessed that Robert was cheating on her. He had almost no indication at all and yet he knew because he knew what would upset HIM the most. 

And that’s why I love to explore their relationship in fics because there are so few stories/books/shows/movies that focus on a mother-son relationship - not in a creepy way like in Psycho. It’s always mother-daughter or father-daughter or father-son, but seemingly never mother-son. I actually tried asking about urban fantasy/fantasy/sci-fi books that would feature a mother-son relationship and GoodReads and its users came up empty! It’s like writers think that all the mothers out there have only daughters and sons spring up from the ground like some magical creatures or something. 

So yeah, basically, Lightwoods FTW! The most intriguing part of SH for me!

They’re all adopted, first by Clint, later by Nat when she calmed the fuck down.

Peter and Wendy are Pietro and Wanda, but in our reimagining of things, were only six when Ultron went down.  Creepy children ftw.  Anyway, Nat has a thing about little girls getting used and Clint has a thing about any kid being abused and those kids would not do well in the system, so Clint took them home and adopted them.  He became Papa and Nat was Tasha for a while.

Then they met Kate when she picked Clint’s pocket in Brooklyn (she also has a hugely altered backstory) and he basically gave Nat puppy dog eyes when he caught up with her because she was five and a foster kid and clearly another stray that needed to be brought home.

He never made Nat be their mom, but she kind of was unintentionally from the start, and kiiiind of freaked out when this was brought to her attention by a small Kate.  It worked out in the end though, and she decided that kids weren’t for her as a blanket rule, but her kids were pretty great exceptions, and Romanoff got tacked on with a hyphen after Barton for the kids.

It helps that she never had to potty train anybody.

1. coke or pepsi? I don’t have a preference, but fun fact: when I was a child, I called them mamsi-coke and papsi-coke (as in mom and dad) for no particular reason.

2. disney or dreamworks? I like Dreamworks’ intro more than Disney’s, so yeah.

3. coffee or tea? I’ve tasted coffee twice and hated it both times. I’m a devoted fan of Earl Grey tea.

4. books or movies? Usually books, but sometimes movies capture a scene much better than a book could.

5. windows or mac? Windows: the only experience I’ve had with Mac was with a horrible, horrible PC.

6. dc or marvel? Marvel: I haven’t seen much of DC...

There’s writer (not sure whether my shitty writing will be good enough to make at least some career out of it...), CÉGÈP-level psychology teacher (because my two-times psych teacher Lisa amazed me), Speech-Language therapist for children (because I’m intimate with how it works), and/or ASL interpreter somewhere somehow (because I’m a slut for languages). Extra-career-wise, I’d like to keep writing and reading any time I have time.
