I finished “My Best Friend’s Exorcism” in two sittings. It’s the third Grady Hendrix book that I’ve read, and it’s always so interesting to sit with an author long enough to learn their foibles and fascinations. It feels like Exorcism was his warm up for “The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires”, an almost beat for beat first draft that hones the themes that he feels the need to explore over and over again.

 All of his books are a love letter to 80′s Horror, with his titles and premises sounding like tongue in cheeks spoofs of the various genres that hit their height in that decade, but the actual prose is never as goofy as you’d expect from the cover. In every book, the actual monster is actually just mundane misogyny, the horror coming from the hopelessness you feel when you’re talked over, ignored and dismissed by those in power who are nominally meant to be on your side.

All of his books answer the kinds of questions that could be considered plot holes in the source material he pulls from. “Why didn’t you call the police?” “Why didn’t you just compare notes so everyone is on the same page?” His characters always try to do what’s logical and rational in the face of the inexplicable, and time and again they’re told or shown that the world would rather they die quietly than make a fuss

So I just finished my first playthrough of Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous and hoo boy, was that a ton of suspense and anxiety. Like, good job of keeping on my goddamn toes and building up to finally reaching Areelu. Like I was legitimately getting anxious and nervous all through the Threshold and I am still recovering. It was great. What wasn't so great were epilogue pages literally missing from the very end. Like...what the hell. How did that happen? Why? I feel like that should have been fixed by now. Thankfully most of my companions seem to have obtained happy endings, but I would have certainly liked to read the details! At least my Azata got to be happy traveling the world with Lann.

I'm a fecking edjit.

I keep complaining about this never-ending EDS flare, but I forgot that a mast cell reaction can not only be triggered by pain but also ignite the pain neural pathways and basically become a fecking ouroboros of self-devouring misery.

Pain triggers mast cell degranlation. Mast cell degranulation causes pain.

I'm not just having an EDS flare. I'm still degranulating from last week's migraine episode. I stopped medicating too soon.

HC whenever Dazai used to visit others in the hospital in the Port Mafia, he'd draw on their casts or bandages if they had them.

and you just know he's being a little shit about it.

Chuuya would get the most cursed emojis on his: GET WELL OR ELSE ಠ益ಠ and also Mori-san's making me do your work so get better now! (≧Д≦)

It's motivation for Chuuya to get better only because he's sick and tired of Dazai drawing more and more stupid things on him and visiting him in the hospital.

Then when Dazai has to wear a cast for a while, the tables have turned and he has stick figures and angry scribbles all over from Chuuya in different colors.

I'm on the second entry and realising that my reactions are definitely going to be shaped by having read people's dracula daily posts last year. somehow I thought jonathan only accepted the rosary out of politeness. somehow I thought he was totally untouched by the woman's distress, that he dismissed it entirely as superstition.

except he tries and fails to comfort her. he thanks her gravely. he accepts the token of protection that he's honestly not comfortable with. and yeah, sure, some of that's just politeness - and some's just basic decency.

but there he is later, writing his diary, and he's still got the rosary around his neck. here he is, still so near the beginning of his journey, and already he's fearing the worst.

If this book should ever reach Mina before I do, let it bring my good-bye. Here comes the coach!
