Much of their development is attributed to their sibling like relationship with Cora. The soul of Agent Collins has moved on.

The Couture Bridal Fantasy

On her wedding day, it is every bride's dream to feel the most beautiful that she has ever felt in her lifetime. And sometimes, to feel like your most beautiful self, one has to step outside of the conventional and into the fantastical. Dropped waists and "angelic silhouettes" were identified by Brides magazine as trends spotted during the New York Bridal Fashion week this year, harkening back to the ideas of the historical and the fantastic. Three couture bridal companies: Cinq, Danielle Frankel, and Nicole + Felicia, are exploring the collaboration of the historical and the fantastic with their breathtaking and groundbreaking Spring 2025 Bridal Collections, displayed earlier this month at New York Bridal Fashion Week.

The first image is from Nicole + Felicia's Spring 2025 collection, which has the overarching theme "Wonderland" to encompass the wonder and magic of a bride's wedding day, while also making a callback to the "Alice in Wonderland" book series, about a young girl who enters a world of absurd fantasy. Nicole + Felecia, a sister-owned brand, is most well-known for making couture gowns for celebrities, including ballgowns for Taylor Swift's "Eras" tour and red carpet looks for Jennifer Lopez and Janelle Monáe, though they have been designing bridal collections since 2018. This look, labeled simply as "Look 4" features a dramatic ballgown silhouette and detachable leg-of-mutton sleeves. These details invoke the past while also creating a sense of modernity alongside the fantastical with the ultra-deep v neckline, creating balance and yes, wonder.

Danielle Frankel's bridal wear has exploded in popularity since opening launching her brand in 2017, being worn by celebrities such as Julia Garner, Alexandria Daddario and AnnaSophia Robb. According to a Vouge Australia article from October 2022, the brand has become the "go-to for cool girl brides" and the "Cora" look pictured above exudes the "cool girl" aesthetic, with a "draped soft tulle bodice with swagged sleeve and hand painted floral illusion tulle overlay" the modern and the fantastical are balanced here in an unexpected and exciting way, a treat for the bride who wants to indulge in the fantastical and unconventional. There is something Grecian about many of Frankel's looks, and the "Cora" is no exception, with the column-esque silhouette and intentional draping reflecting a respect for fashion history while also playing around with modern elements. The exposed midriff and pants that this look comes with push the boundaries of what bridal wear can be.

Cinq's fourth collection (stylized as IV) had a truly breathtaking presentation at New York Bridal Fashion Week, inviting guests into an intimate dinner party setting for their fashion show, and allowing them to indulge in the fantasy of their new collection. From the home page of their website, the brand identifies their philosophy: "For centuries human beings have taken part in rituals, marriage being one of the most sacred and coveted. Cinq was created for the bride that connects on an emotional level to her gown, it’s not just the dress .. it’s a precious, fleeting moment in time.. it’s the feeling when she’s wearing it.. it’s the moment of reflection. The Cinq bride emanates a unique progressive nostalgia combining vintage silhouettes with modern details. Dressed in a garment that stands as an ode to the past poised for the future - detailed to cast a moment into memory, for her."

Overall, it's clear from these stunning looks that the modern couture bride wants to indulge in her fantasies when shopping for her dress. However, be warned, these looks will cost the bride (or whoever is paying for the dress) a pretty penny. "Cora" retails for just under 6 thousand (one of the less pricey Danielle Frankel gowns), with Nicole + Felicia and Cinq gowns coming in at around similar price points. However, these are prices that many brides are willing to pay in order to get to live out their own personal fantasies on the day of their wedding, a day that is often regarded in our collective mindset as a day that should be full of magic, romance, and whimsy, all of which can be elevated by the "perfect" dress choice.

Stood at the house Jane showed him the other day, Nick looks to everyone else.

Andy - This is so...

Ava - Cool!

Andy - I was gonna say creepy.

Nick - But get this.

He picks up a stone and throws it. And just like last time, it stops in mid air for a moment before dropping.

Dan - That's so freaky.

Lucas - And maybe not a great idea to keep doing if there is a ghost in there like you say.

Voice - What do you kids think you're doing?!

They all look round to see an elderly woman approaching them, half her face scarred.

Stacy - Ohmygod!

Lily - That's...!

Ava - Pritch the Witch.

Cora - I do have a name, you know. Now come away from there, all of you.

Jane - Why?

Cora - The thing in there is evil.

I... Remember... You...

Cora moves protectively in front of all the kids as shadows seep out of the doorway. Shadows that soon take the form of a creature with long fingers. Cora raises her hand and it glows.

Cora - Return.

A pulse emits from Cora's hand and the shadow creature disperses. All of the shadows return to the building. She turns to the kids, glaring at them.

Cora - What were you thinking?!

Nick - We--

Cora - I suggest you all go home. Now.

Able to see that Cora is not willing to talk, the group turn and return to Nick's house. As they do, Cora turns to look at the ruins.

Cora - You tried to mess with things that shouldn't have been, Douglas.

Out of breath by the time they emerge from the woods, the entire group is out of breath. Jane looks to Nick, neither sure what to think of all that just happened.

Lucas - I think we should stay away from there.

Andy - Me too.

Stacy - Me three. She made it sound really dangerous. Like...

Lily - Like someone could have been hurt or worse!

SENIOR YEAR

Seeing Noah and Jane part way on the walk to school, Nick runs to catch up with them.

Jane - Hey, Nick!

Noah - Hey.

Nick - Hi. Ready for our final year of high school?

Jane - Absolutely. College, here I come.

Nick chuckles.

Jane - So come on, Nick. Are you actually gonna ask Stacy out or do you plan on chickening out? Again.

Nick - I...!

Noah - You did mess it up at her birthday party.

Nick - I just... I panicked.

Jane - Well, I refuse to let that happen.

Nick - Wait, what're you planning, Jane?

Jane - To do it for you if you don't.

Nick - Jane!

She sticks her tongue out at him and they all laugh as Nick shakes his head.

Jane - Noah, can you give us a sec?

Noah - Sure.

Noah picks up the pace and leaves his sister and Nick. Once he is in front of them enough, Jane looks at Nick.

Jane - But in all seriousness, Nick. Why haven't you asked her out yet?

Nick - I guess I'm just afraid to lose a friend if she said no, or if she said yes and I screwed something up.

Jane - Well on that first bit, it's a risk you have to take. And then with the second, I think you might be overthinking it.

Nick - I know. But you know me...

Jane - I'll have your back.

Nick - Thanks. Don't know what I'd do without you...

PROM NIGHT

With everyone having gathered at Nick's to prepare, Jane covers Nick's eyes.

Jane - You're good, Stace!

He waits a few moments before Jane takes her hands away and his eyes widen at the sight of Stacy in her prom dress.

Nick - Wow...

He takes her hands in his, laying a light kiss on her forehead.

Nick - You look beautiful.

Nick's mom enters with a camera.

Mom - Alright, everyone. Group photo.

Ava - Pretty sure I won't show up.

Mom - You will on this. Modified for Vampires.

Ava can't help but smile as Jane pulls her in with everyone else.

Mom - And smile!

The flash goes off as the moment is captured. Jane blinks as she takes a moment for her surroundings to come back into focus from the flash.

Mom - Sorry. Had it on auto.

They all laugh as they recover from the flash in their own ways.

YEARS LATER, THE MORNING OF THE WEDDING OF NICK TAYLOR & STACY GREEN

Standing, Stacy takes a deep breath as she mentally prepares herself for one of the biggest days of her life. Jane rests her hands on Stacy's shoulders.

Jane - Ready?

Stacy nods with a shaky breath, turning to face her, Lily, and Ava.

Jane - You sure?

Stacy - I never expected it to feel like this.

Jane - Look, there's only one question that matters.

They both sit down, Stacy's hands in Jane's.

Jane - Do you love Nick?

Stacy - I do.

Jane - And there's the magic words.

Stacy laughs lightly.

Stacy - You aren't ordained.

Jane - I can do a quick online course if you want.

After the ceremony, Jane watches from the side as Nick and Stacy sway to the soft music. Ava joins her.

Jane - Did you manage to do it?

Dan - Uh, do what?

Jane jumps at the sound of Dan's voice.

Jane - I might've asked a little favor of the magical variety.

Noah - Jane, Cora--

Ava - Nothing to do with the Power. This was my own Witchy magic.

Everyone gathers outside, much to Nick and Stacy's confusion.

Nick - What's going on?

Ava - Jane asked me to put a spell on your rings.

Stacy - What kind of spell?

Ava - Nothing dangerous. If the two of you ever get separated, the rings will allow you to open a portal to each other.

Jane - No matter what, you'll always find each other.

Nick - That's...

Unable to find the words, Nick wraps Ava and Jane in a hug.

Nick - Thank you.

Ava - Okay, that's enough.

Laughing, Nick steps back, only for Stacy to take his place. Ava pats her back.

Stacy - That's really amazing of you.

She steps back, smiling. Even after all these years, the entire group knows that no matter what, they'll always have each others backs. All of them. Nick Taylor, Stacy Green, Ava Cunningham, Lucas Thomas, Andy Kang, Dan Pierce, Lily Ortiz, Jane and Noah Marshall.

It's safe to say that Roy Oliphant was raised without parents. Sure, he had parents, but they were far too busy with their own personal lives to really raise a child. Once Roy was old enough to feed and clothe himself, it was fast food, canned food and TV all day, every day. Except for when school called. School, what a joke. It's no surprise Roy wasn't all too fond of school. And school wasn't too fond of Roy either. Teased, tormented, and often left hanging by his drawers from the railing at the top of the stairs, Roy found solace in the library. Not only could people not make fun of him in there (or torture him for that matter), but it opened the door to whole other world he'd never known before: information. Specifically interesting not-very-school-related information. Books, man. Roy read everything he could get his hands on. Fun stuff. Like aliens, werewolves, bigfoot, giant squids, anything funny or supernatural. He became obsessed, connecting and disproving theories in his own head, all the while, his studies suffering dramatically. It probably goes without saying, but Roy never finished school, dropping out at sixteen after getting into a fight with his dad over his grades. The ordeal left him with two black eyes, and, attempting to put his trust into the school system for the first time in his young life, Roy told school administration... who, in turn, laughed in his face. Forgery's a crime, kids. One Roy became all too familiar with when he decided to sign on his parent's behalf to release him from the burden of school. He didn't do too much time over it... but his family sure as Hell kicked him out, leaving the guy homeless. Fast forward to the present, and Roy didn't turn out too bad, getting himself a shitty little job at a convenience store, where he can take home as much of the cafe food that doesn't sell as he can manage. Getting mixed up with Team Handsome was a blessing in disguise... leading him straight into Coach Moblow's sights. And everyone knows Moblow just can't not try to help people out.

Aliens, man.

Currently a member of the Alien Enthusiasts Club. It has a paid membership because of all the deep secret intel they collect from the government and share with their members. This is literally the only paid expense he sets aside at all costs each month. Not even rent gets priority over his membership fees.

The only other thing he ‘saves’ up for is the Alien Convention that happens every Summer in La Juve’s West End.

Because of this, he often finds himself scrambling for funds every month to make rent. Some of his more successful 'get rich quick' schemes include: entering Ziggy into the Little Miss Juventud pageant under the guise of a girl, setting up random raffles or fundraisers without actually delivering on the prizes or products, 'watching' stuff for people, etc.

Believes himself to have ~genius~ ideas, most of which are elaborate in thought but not in planning.

He is almost always surprised when his plans don't go as expected, either due to that lack of preparation or just being damn well impossible to begin with.

He currently holds the title of ‘Assistant Coach’ to Team Handsome, but everyone knows he’s really just Coach Moblow’s personal assistant. The guy can’t coach a kitten to nap, he’s definitely not coaching Team Handsome in any way, shape, or form.

Coach Moblow sometimes ( a lot of the time ) makes Roy run laps with the team. Probably because of that beer belly hanging out over his jeans.

Ziggy throws fits whenever Coach tries to make Roy lose weight.

Huge on conspiracy theories. It’s not just about Aliens with him. He’s onto Bigfoot and the Chupacabra, too, just to name a few!

Literal man-child. Happy go lucky, a little snarky, but never really outright angry. Unless you hurt his feelings. He’s real friendly -- almost too friendly. Which only gets him into things he ought not to be getting into.

The only exception to this is his sudden out-of-character bursts of anger that seem to be provoked when people start yelling at his friends -- specifically Team Handsome (or SOMETIMES when somebody tries to tell him how to live his life). He can occasionally get violent during these episodes.

Seriously thinks there’s gold buried somewhere in La Juve because he claims to have found a treasure map once as a kid.

Not real big into drugs because it'd distract him from more important matters. Like Alien Hunting. Only smokes pot to calm him down. But, he’s more of a drinker.

He’s a real loud motherfucker, and mad nosy, too. Which often gets him into trouble. Meddling in things he ought not to be meddling in.

Kind of limited in terms of what he knows about the real world and how it works.

Gets mixed up in every kind of shenanigan.

Talks to everyone... even people he probably shouldn’t talk to. The rest of Team Handsome often have to keep a close eye on him to make sure he doesn’t wander off or get abducted. It FEELS like they’re the ones babysitting him instead of the other way around.

In charge of water, drinks and snacks for the team when they’re at competitions. Which, he sometimes fucks up by forgetting altogether... or providing snacks that Coach doesn’t approve. Like Cheetos and Coke.

He’s that crazy one who will openly talk about aliens on buses and trains.

Roy has vivid memories of being abducted by aliens.

He has newspaper clippings thumbtacked all over the walls of his home.

He honestly believed one had to cut up a bunch of little corks to create corkboard, so he wasn’t about to waste time and energy on that.

It wasn’t until he went out to Target with Ziggy that he realised you could buy corkboard already made.... when Ziggy pointed it out to him.

He ripped it from Ziggy’s hands and tossed it in the cart, bought it and took it home. To this day, it remains in its plastic shrink wrap, sitting propped up against the wall by the door like a forgotten birthday present.

Everyone points it out to him.

Team Handsome seems to congregate in and around his home because he’s super chill. Anyone can bum a couch for as long as they need.

The OLDEST member of Team Handsome. But... he’s not very good at skating.

One of Ziggy and Austyn’s oldest friends in La Juve. At the time, he didn’t have his own place, otherwise he would have taken them in. He worked real hard to get his own place after meeting them, but by then they had places to stay. At least now he has a place of his own they can all party and hang out in.

His home would have and should have been listed and sold for more than double what he could spend on a home at the time, but the little old lady that was selling it took pity on him because he reminded her of her dead grandson. So she sold it to him for far less as long as he promised to take good care of it. It is a rent-to-own situation, in case you’re wondering.

Tends to know a lot about random topics, but not very smart when it comes to anything school might have taught.

Has a habit of using words incorrectly, or using them the way he wants to instead of how they’re supposed to be used, basically disregarding their meaning and giving them a new one.

Also a big fan of making up his own words. Going so far as to write out his own dictionary -- which he plans to sell, marketing it as ‘additions to the English language’.

Is the reason for Ziggy’s own fascination with aliens, and likes to take Ziggy to the Alien Convention. It’s been ‘their thing’ since he met Ziggy when he was just a little guy.

His favorite memory of Ziggy is one where he made him dress up in a ridiculous Alien costume for the convention and it got him the attention of a lot of people because he looked so cute. Like walking a dog through a park. Even more attention than Dr. Alvin Simona’s presentation. Love that shit.

Calls himself the Newspaper Whisperer. Because he feels like he can predict headlines before they happen.

Believes the Men in Black movies had a lot of good pointers in it, and he has since taken to reading the tabloids to find 'juicy stories and leads'. He is convinced he can tell which stories are legit and which ones are pure fiction.

Is actually pretty Close with Cora Taylor and was even her prom date.

He pronounces Fujioka like FOO-GEE-YOLK-UH.

First became involved with Ziggy Holland after seeing him around the truck stop off of the interstate in West End without a parent or guardian. He wanted to help Ziggy get off the streets because Ziggy was/is a child prostitute. Making money working the truck stops whenever he could.

Attempts to house Ziggy in his own apartment as often as he can without getting into issues with his then roommate.

He is the one that enrolled Ziggy into school, in an effort to keep him out of trouble for at least a good portion of the day.

Ziggy is the one that seduces Roy -- particularly when he gets into his angry moods. Ziggy believes Roy’s anger likely stems from sexual frustration. **Casual reminder that his moods are VERY INFREQUENT.** Roy is NOT an angry person overall.

Ziggy has a crush on Roy because Roy is the first person in his life to actually care about him and show him kindness. There is no intricate romance between them. It’s honestly just a little boy crush. They’re close friends and genuinely care about each other.

Roy is the one that places the anonymous call to social services when Ziggy moves in full time with a known sexual predator -- which ultimately leads to Ziggy’s placement with Sal and Tyler.

Like Sal, Roy tries to keep Ziggy within the security of childhood for as long as he can (because Roy himself had such a shitty one), and thus works his ASS off to keep Ziggy believing in things like Santa, etc.

He definitely goes overboard on the Santa thing. Every. Single. Year. And even went so far as to somehow rope Mauri into helping him get reindeer on the roof of Sal’s house.... that Sal had to figure out how to get down.

Needless to say, while Sal is glad someone is helping him with the Santa thing, he is NOT a fan of how extreme Roy’s ideas are. Especially not when he has to clean up after him. Or, you know, make someone else clean up after him.

If you did ever want to make Roy mad, all you’d have to do is tell Ziggy that there’s no such thing as Santa.

Before Roy was taken on as “Assistant Coach” by Moblow, Ziggy actually begged Sal to get Roy a job (after he was fired from his previous one), which ended up being personal assistant/personal shopper/shopping buddy to Tyler... because Tyler was complaining that he had no friends. Because everyone is too scared of Sal to be his friend.

To this day, Tyler will still sometimes drag Roy out with him. Just so he doesn’t have to do things alone. Roy basically holds all of Tyler’s shopping and lets him talk.

Roy secretly admires Tyler... but is also really scared of him.

He’s probably more scared of Tyler than Sal. Just because he thinks Sal is a big softy deep down since Sal wants to keep Ziggy believing in Santa just like him.

Please note: Smut absolutely does NOT have to be written out at all. But it is, at least, implied from time to time. And no one outside of Ziggy, and maybe Austyn and Sully, is aware that there is anything going on between Roy and Ziggy. Further, it is something Ziggy eventually grows out of, too. Though he always remains protective of and close to Roy.

UPDATE: Since PRICKZILLA is claiming Roy is a carbon copy of her character, allow me to outline some ways they aren't similar:

- Completely different back stories for one.

- Roy is NOT into human trafficking. AT ALL.

- Roy DOES NOT work in a morgue or have a radio show.

- Roy DOES NOT have problems sleeping at night.

- Roy DOES NOT touch drugs outside of pot.

- Roy IS NOT and WILL NEVER be an alcoholic. He just drinks a lot of beer and occasionally gets drunk (Like when he parties. Like a NORMAL person).

- Roy WAS NEVER and WILL NEVER be a sex addict.

- Roy IS NOT a dick or shit talker.

- Roy IS a literal cupcake with a heart of Gold that genuinely wants to help people he comes across. Even if they’ve been mean to him in the past.

- Roy IS NOT smart by any means, but he tries. He doesn’t even have a HS diploma or GED. 99% of his get rich schemes FAIL MISERABLY.

- Roy works as an "assistant coach" aka secretary or personal assistant for a very nice man that Roy admires and aspires to be like (Coach Moblow).

- Roy's parents are very much ALIVE and well. And he has a GOOD/NORMAL relationship with them.

- Roy was born and raised in La Juve and has siblings. Specifically THREE older brothers, one who is a COP, another who is in a Motorcycle gang, and an ADOPTED BROTHER who is actually a famous athlete. (Obviously inspired by Four Brothers).

- Roy was created by no less than THREE different people, two of which had no idea of who Bo was.

Julia is the twin sister of Laura Hale, the daughter of Talia, and sister to Cora and Derek. The night that the Hale family housewas set alight, Julia had managed to escape with a few wounded younger ones. She got separate from her twin, which she hated, but she knew that Laura was alive, she just knew it. But to protect the younger ones she managed to get out, she had to go on the run. Hunters managed to find them, and unfortunately killed those that remained, Julia injured in the process of trying to protect them. She felt like a failure, unable to protect her family, her pack. When she was finally somewhere safe, Julia passed out, and was found by an Omega, who helped her heal, which took a while, considering her state of mind, and the way she felt like she had let her family down. The two stayed together, protecting one another, and though they weren't a true pack, they were loyal to each other, as if they were one. Canon as to when it comes to Laura: Julia woke up one night, in a pool of sweat, she felt like she was instantly missing something, like there was a hole in her heart, and the girl instantly knew that her Sister was gone. Thats when Julia made up her mind that she had to return to Beacon Hills. But the fellow Omega, who she had stayed with, decided to not join her, so once again, Julia was on her own.

Harper Tripp: Phoenix

Phoenix's are powerful beings, and very rare now. It is genetic, but most Phoenix's lines are gone. Except hers, which runs in both sides of her family, meaning she is not only rare, but powerful. Her eyes glow red when she is using her abilities. She can ignite with a touch, but also when she is using the peak of her abilities, her whole body can light up in flames. She also is able to control fire, even if she did not create it. ANd is impervious to fire. She is incredibly fast when she wants to be, and has regeneration abilities when injured.

Taylor Brockhart: Multiverse

Taylor isn't sure who her real parents are, she had a closed adoption, and her fathers, Marco and Jeff raised her from a baby. She loves her Dads, and can't imagine life without them. They gave her the best of everything, wanting to make her feel that she wasn't abandoned by her real parents, but a gift from God to them. Because of the way she was raised, she has never been interested in finding out who her real parents are. As far as she's concerned, her real parents are Marco and Jeff, even though she looks nothing like either of them. She is by no means Spoilt, and has always worked hard, and done well in school, her grades were always above average. Taylor went to Business school and once she left with incredible grades, she then went into Hospitality and management, and is now a Hotelier. She speaks French, Spanish and Italian.

Mika Bishop: Demi Goddess- Daughter of Athena

Mika, daughter of Athena, and left on her fathers doorstep the day after she was born. Her father had no clue how to look after a baby. He hadn't planned on being a father, yet here was this tiny helpless little thing looking up at him with big eyes, needing his love. Athena left a letter for him, telling him everything, and telling him that she was called Mika. He never hid who she was from her, he taught her all about her mother, and the reason she couldn't be there herself. But that didn't stop a little girl wanting a mother. Her father met her step mother when Mika was six months old, and Mika instantly loved having a female influence in her life. Mika has 3 younger siblings, 2 sisters and a brother, and she adores them. And though they may not be like her, they are still her siblings. They are not half siblings. Mika, like her mother, is incredibly smart, and wise. She is incredibly protective, and if you mess with anyone she cares about, you will see the Goddess of war rise within her.

Sofia was born a werewolf, her mother and father both being wolves. However, at the age of 15 years old, Hunters invaded the pack, and both her mother and father were killed. Her Alpha protected her, helped raise her from that moment, as her parents had been his closest friends. But with the pack numbers depleted, they were unable to defend themselves fully. The very few members that remained, lived in a very small community, most are too old now to fight, too old to work, too old to accept new members into the Pack, leaving Sofia as their only hope.

Brooke is a witch, one who had been suppressed for many years by her Grandmother, who raised her, who was also a witch. A witch who believed that they were sinners, and needed to be suppressed of their gift, in order to be saved. But Brooke is naturally a strong Witch, and rather than supressing her abilities, it was messing with them, making them unpredictable and dangerous. Brooke decides to run away from home, in search for her mother, who had left shortly after Brooke was born, though she is not sure her mother is still alive. Riverdale Creates Its Own Church Because Why Not?

Riverdale Season 5 Episode 16

“Being canonized has always been one of my life’s goals.”

And so it came to pass that Cheryl Blossom turned water into maple syrup.

Goddamn Riverdale is glorious trash.

In what is either very subtle marketing for The Eyes of Tammy Faye or just the best direction this show has taken since everyone was hopped up on Jingle Jangle, the Blossom family’s “Church of Jason” antics came into sharp focus this week. Although relegated to a B or C plot, this plotline — which works equally well as a satire on hip religions that popped up out of nowhere (see also: last week’s The Other Two) or as Cheryl’s latest brush with divine darkness.

The focal point of this episode was clearly supposed to be Archie getting justice for his fallen comrades, but how can one be expected to pay attention to military intrigue when a line like “for I am Cheryl Blossom, Queen of the Bees” is delivered by Madelaine Petsch without a hint of insincerity? Disjointed as this season is, there’s been a clear effort on the part of the writing to staff to give the show’s secondary characters more to do. (Due to Petsch’s constant scene-stealing it’s easy to forget that she was previously a supporting character before the series’ producers made the wise decision to become an ensemble piece instead of focusing primarily on Archie, Veronica, Betty and Jughead). As a result, Cheryl has shone brighter than ever.

While Penelope clearly sees the Church of Jason as another shady enterprise, for Cheryl it has become a, well, bona fide religious experience. Since breaking up with Toni she has become, in the immortal words of The Lemonheads, “a ship without a rudder.” The Church of Jason gives her a purpose, even if it is only to satisfy her carnivorous desire for validation. Although this has some unexpected side effects, namely that her false divinity unexpectedly gave rise to an actual miracle when she controlled the bees and use them to dispel Penelope from the Church. “Something inside me has shifted,” she tells Kevin afterwards, “something powerful.” More than just quasi-literally becoming a Queen Bee, Cheryl has undergone a true religious awakening and tapped into a power inside of herself. How will this manifest? And what ramifications will it have for her and all of Riverdale itself?

Cheryl has always been more of a persona than a character, reliably outrageous with hints of an inner depth that go undeveloped as the series’ tears through its storytelling. I’d like to think that whatever is happening here is going to correct that wrong and give Cheryl the ability to be fleshed out more. Seeing how self-aware Riverdale has been of late (i.e. Josie’s takedown of the entire gang last week), there is a renewed effort to strengthen sidelined characters. Let’s see how Cheryl benefits from this in the few remaining episodes of the season.

Speaking of sidelined characters, there is none more so than Casey Cott’s Kevin Keller. Five seasons in and Kevin can be boiled down to “loves musicals and cruising for anonymous sex,” which doesn’t exactly befit the character’s GLAAD-award comic book counterpart. The continual lack of depth for Kevin and the show’s reliance on stereotyping him remains an absolute downer. Where are his multitudes? At least by pairing him with Cheryl he isn’t out in Fox Forest all the time. Again though, he remains sidelined without any clear definition. I give the series credit for not following the cliched “Bury Your Gays” trope, but by continually mishandling Keller the argument could be made that his lack of dimensions are a fate worse than death. I’m hoping that the show finally figures out what to do with him, as Cott and Keller — who was Archie’s first openly gay character — deserve much better.

The Church of Jason’s actual goals are unclear, and the miracles on display here were pretty much sacrilegious. Now that something has shifted in Cheryl, expect her to transform the religion into something based on her past trauma (and her mother’s scheming) into something entirely different, and perhaps dark. For now though, I’m willing to go on faith that the Church of Jason, and Riverdale itself, has some entertaining miracles up its gloriously bonkers sleeve.

Riverdale Rundown

Like last week’s excellent installment, this episode was directed by Robin Givens, who is rapidly becoming one of this series’ best helmers.

I for one would have loved to have seen Cheryl and Kevin’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat medley. Thanks Penelope.

A nice bit of meta humor appeared when Jason was referred to as “a man of few words” as we have yet to see the character utter even a pre-death flashback syllable.

K.J. Apa’s hair seems to be rebelling against the red hair dye more and more each week.

This episode’s main plot was about Archie’s attempts to bring General Taylor to justice, but it is so disconnected from the other storylines that it ultimately results in a major shrug. Even the show seems uninterested in this, with the climatic tribunal — which would have at least provided some A Few Good Men pastiching — happening off screen.

Before it was cancelled, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina‘s next season was supposed to be a massive Riverdale crossover involving witches. One can only wonder if Cheryl’s new abilities are somehow tied into this abandoned event.

We learn that Reggie and Hermosa had “a thing,” and one that Veronica seems both revolted (and perhaps a bit jealous?) of.

Hiram Lodge storing his palladium in model of So-Dale is very on brand.

The book Jughead initially passes off as his own before coming to his senses is “Rules of Distraction,” (an obvious riff on The Rules of Attraction) written by the very Riverdale-named Cora Carter.

Jughead’s agent is named Samm, and this is perhaps not so coincidental. One of the greatest-ever Archie artists was Samm Schwartz, who has best known for his work on the Jughead solo comic. By giving the character fluid movement and hilarious facial expressions, Schwartz’s gag-packed panels remain the most pleasing take on the character in Archie’s 80-year history.

Copter Cab, a rideshare company that takes one-percenters to exclusive events via helicopter is such a douchey idea that I’m generally shocked it doesn’t exist in real life.

Jughead gets one of the best lines of the week when he remarks to Betty that she “solved like eight mysteries in high school and were still valedictorian.”

What with Archie’s crusade for justice, Veronica generally kicking ass in her battle to detach from Chad and regain her She-Wolf of Wall Street Mojo, all the aforementioned magic of Cheryl and Kevin, and Jughead’s attempt to get his life back on track, Betty’s search for the Lonely Highway Trucker didn’t get much screentime until the end of the episode. By pairing with Tabitha Tate on the road, she has a new ally, and I can’t wait to see these two trying to solve crimes together.

Speaking of, the Lonely Highway Killer has to be TBK, right?

It’s interesting that the past two episodes have worked overtime to make Mr. Lodge seem small and foolish. I’m not quite sure where this is leading, but it’s satisfying to see him get some comeuppance at last.

Fake brands this week include the Boysenberry pager and The Wall Beat Journal.

Now that Jughead’s The Lost Weekend-ing seems to be headed towards the backburner, I’m excited for next week’s installment which promises the return of Mothmen. Finally.

MY THREE SONS at 60!

September 29, 1960

“My Three Sons” was a situation comedy produced at Desilu Studios. It premiered on ABC TV on September 29, 1960 and finished its first run on April 13, 1972, with 380 episodes making it the second-longest running live-action sitcom in TV history after “The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriett” (1952-66). 

Seasons 1 through 5 were aired in black and white on CBS.  In 1965 it moved to CBS when ABC declined to underwrite the costs of airing in color.  The series was initially filmed at Desilu Studios in Hollywood, but at the start of the 1967–68 season, the cast and crew began filming the series at the CBS Studio Center in Studio City, California due to Lucille Ball’s sale of Desilu to Gulf + Western, which owned Paramount Pictures. The sale also affected the filming location of another family sitcom, “Family Affair.”

Incredibly, “My Three Sons” ran concurrently through both “The Lucy Show” and “Here’s Lucy.” Both Steve Douglas and Lucy Carmichael (and later Carter), where single parents raising children. 

September 16, 1965 was a big night for CBS airing the very first episode of “My Three Sons” after moving from ABC titled “The First Marriage”. It was also the first episode of the series broadcast in color, something “The Lucy Show” did three days earlier with “Lucy at Marineland” (TLS S4;E1). The premise of the series is a widowed father (Steven Douglas) raising his three boys with help of his extended family.  Initially, the three sons were Chip, Robbie, and Mike, but in 1967 Mike was written out and replaced by Ernie, whom Steve adopted.  The extended family at first consisted of Bub, Steve’s father-in-law and the boys’ maternal grandfather, but in 1964, that character was replaced by Uncle Charley, Steve’s uncle and Bub’s brother. 

The leading role was played by film star Fred MacMurray, who the series was built around - including his hectic schedule. To suit MacMurray, scenes would be shot out of sequence and even alone on a soundstage and later edited to create a complete episode.  This was not MacMurray’s first time at Desilu. In 1958 he played himself on the “Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour” in “Lucy Hunts Uranium” set in the Nevada desert outside Las Vegas. He was joined by his second wife, actress June Haver. MacMurray (1908-91) appeared in over 100 films in his career but is perhaps best remembered for the film Double Indemnity (1944), which Lucy references in this episode. MacMurray’s name was first mentioned by Ethel in 1953 in “The Black Eye” (ILL S2;E20) when flowers arrive for Lucy mistakenly signed “Eternally yours, Fred.”

Although Lucille Ball was their landlord (and ultimate boss) she never acted on the show, but many of the actors who appeared on Lucille Ball’s sitcoms did appear on “My Three Sons”.

From 1960 to 1965, MacMurray was joined by William Frawley as Bub O’Casey, the family’s live-in maternal grandfather. Of course, Frawley came to fame on “I Love Lucy” as the crusty landlord Fred Mertz. Frawley had worked with MacMurray in the 1935 film, Car 99. When Frawley had to leave  the show due to ill-health (and it was too costly to insure him) he was replaced by another Desilu alumni, William Demarest, as Uncle Charley. Like his previous co-star, Vivian Vance, Frawley was not especially fond of Demarest personally or as an actor. Demarest had, however, done three films with Lucille Ball. Frawley kept watching “My Three Sons” on his TV set bitterly. He never really got over being replaced by Demarest. On March 3, 1966, Frawley died of a heart attack.

For Christmas 1959, Frawley and Demarest both appeared with Lucy and Desi in “The Desilu Revue” (above with “December Bride’s” Spring Byington). At the time, Demarest was working on the Desilu lot appearing in NBC’s “Love and Marriage.”

On “My Three Sons” two of  Steve Douglas’ boys had been seen on “The Lucy Show”: Don Grady (Robbie Douglas) had played Chris Carmichael’s friend Bill and Barry Livingston (Ernie Douglas) had played Mr. Mooney’s son Arnold. Ted Eccles, who assumed the role of Arnold Mooney when Barry Livingston was busy on “My Three Sons,” also did an episode. 

The children of “The Lucy Show,” Ralph Hart (who played Viv Bagley’s son Sherman), Jimmy Garrett (Jerry Carmichael), and Candy Moore (Lucy Carmichael’s daughter Chris) were also on episodes of "My Three Sons.”

Other child stars who appeared on “My Three Sons” included Butch Patrick (“The Munsters”), Jay North (“Dennis the Menace”), Oscar-winner Jodie Foster, Angela Cartwright (“Make Room for Daddy”), Flip Mark (”Lassie”), John Walmsley (”The Waltons”), Tony Dow (“Leave It To Beaver”), Erin Moran (“Happy Days”), Maureen McCormick (”The Brady Bunch”), Ann Jillian (Gypsy), and Heather Menzies (The Sound of Music). 

On November 22, 1977, ABC TV (and Dick Clark Productions) brought together a reunion of two of television's favorite sitcoms "The Partridge Family" and "My Three Sons." Hosted by Shirley Jones and Fred MacMurray this would be the only time that the surviving cast members would get together to celebrate the series which included clips, a song from David Cassidy, and an update of what each cast member was doing in 1977.

Also in 1977, some of the stars of the series reunited on a morning program titled "The Early Show", including Stanley Livingston (Chip Douglas), Barry Livingston (Ernie Douglas), Tina Cole (Katie Miller Douglas), and Don Grady (Robbie Douglas).  

TRIVIA

In “Lucy Helps Danny Thomas” (TLS S4;E7) in 1965, there is a large framed photo of Fred MacMurray in the studio hallway.  He is joined by other Desilu stars like Jim Nabors (of “Gomer Pyle USMC”), Andy Griffith (of “The Andy Griffith Show”) and Danny Thomas (of “The Danny Thomas Show”).

The Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing have announced that they will present the 2020 Tony Awards this year after all, in a digital format. Details are scarce, but here's what we know: The newly determined cutoff date will be February 19, and therefore, the last two shows to open before the shutdown, West Side Story and Girl From the North Country, will not be eligible (the reason being they didn't invite enough voters to see them), nor will Six, which was supposed to open the night theaters closed.

Still, there are 18 productions and dozens of worthy actors and designers left to get nominated in 26 categories. Here, we look at the performers from the season, and explain the various Tonys rules for categories that may not seem particularly full. For a look at the eligible shows, click here.

Best Actor in a Musical

Eligible Artists:

Chris McCarrell, The Lightning Thief Aaron Tveit, Moulin Rouge!

Yup, there are the only two eligible nominees, which is, as far as I can tell, a first for this category. The closest similarity I could find was in 1970, when three actors were nominated. There's more of a precedence in the Best Actress category — back in 1995, Glenn Close and Rebecca Luker were the only two nominees, with Close winning for Sunset Boulevard (it looks like they deliberately chose not to nominate Megan Mullally that year for How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying), and before that, Gwen Verdon and Miyoshi Umeki went head to head in 1959, with Verdon winning for Redhead.

There are a few options here. They could eliminate the category, which doesn't seem too fair. They could combine it with Best Actress in a Musical and create a nongendered category, which would look admirable and progressive, two qualities that are the complete antithesis of what the Tonys have proved themselves to be year after year, so this probably won't happen.

Or, they could add two more performers who had previously been ruled as featured: Daniel J. Watts, Ike in Tina: The Tina Turner Musical, and Sean Allan Krill, Steve in Jagged Little Pill. But are these leading roles? You can make more of a case for Watts than Krill, and that's where problems may arise.

So unless they revise this previous determinations, combine acting categories, or do away with the whole thing altogether, it looks like either McCarrell or Tveit, both first-time nominees, are taking home their first Tony.

Best Actress in a Musical

There are a variety of Tonys rules when it comes to the number of slots in a category. If there are nine eligible nominees, there will be five slots. If there are fewer than nine, there will be four slots. But I can find nothing about four or fewer eligible nominees (see above), which leads me to believe that if the Tonys keep everything traditional, this will likely be the lineup.

But even if they do combine the Best Actor and Best Actress category, we all know who's probably going to win.

Best Actor in a Play

With more than nine potential nominees, this category will have five slots. It's interesting to note that there are three men from The Inheritance here. Back when that was announced, everyone looked at the ruling askance: in a full season, they would probably cancel each other out. But now, all three actors from The Inheritance actually have a great chance of getting nominated.

Still, determinations for Grand Horizons and A Soldier's Play have not yet been made, and we can assume that James Cromwell (Grand Horizons) and Blair Underwood (A Soldier's Play) will land in the leading category, with David Alan Grier, who was also above the title in the latter, being placed in the featured category.

Best Actress in a Play

Eligible Artists:

Determinations have not been made for Grand Horizons and My Name Is Lucy Barton, but we can assume that Jane Alexander (Grand Horizons) will be placed in this category, as will Lucy Barton's sole performer, Laura Linney. Even with those two additions, this category only has eight eligible nominees, so there will only be four available slots.

The featured acting categories are where it gets dicey every year, since anyone who's not ruled as a lead can be featured. Therefore, all four featured acting categories have more than 9 potential nominees, so they will each have at least five slots (more if there are ties). Here are many of the options.

Best Featured Actor in a Musical

We can expect that actors like David Alan Grier, Jerry O'Connell, Nnamdi Asomugha, Billy Eugene Jones, and McKinley Belcher III (A Soldier's Play) and Michael Urie, Maulik Pancholy, and Ben McKenzie (Grand Horizons) will fit in here. Not to mention the remaining male ensemble members of The Inheritance, The Rose Tattoo, and The Great Society.

Best Featured Actress in a Play

The nominees can go in any direction, but I'm fully expecting the legendary Lois Smith, who could very well turn 90 before these awards are actually presented (her birthday is November 3), to take home her first-ever, long-overdue Tony.
