Getting the Lads Ready for An Adventure
I've been planning a big photo shoot for Trys and Alex, to be shot in the museum's garden. It involves a 1970 Barbie Camper.
Tumblr media
I've been working on restoring and improving this camper for several weeks now. I created a replacement back panel and glued down loose vinyl as best I could (believe it or not this is an improvement) I replaced a broken tent-like sleeping structure with other improvements such as the futon and the fairy lights (one of the pillows on the futon is actually hiding the battery for the lights). I made the futon and pillows. The psychedelic fabric, which also covers the interior side of the replacement panel is by Kaffe Fassett.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Two more pictures of the interior. It's hard to photograph, but I'm really proud of it. Not just as a restoration of the Barbie camper, but as a period interior. I love the twee little mugs I found in my doll stuff. It's so Them. The camper and dolls are in a pop-up exhibit right now. The Led Zeppelin fan art aspect of Trys & Alex get's clocked about 50% of the time by people over 50. Mal and I go back and forth about referring to them as Jimmy&Robert or Trys&Alex. (I favor the latter).
Time for closeups. Alex/Robert (Creatable World DC-220) is wearing Bratz Boys jeans and a Skipper top - both 1990s vintage with creatable world shoes. I made the necklace.
Tumblr media
Trys/Jimmy (Creatable World DC-965) is wearing mostly Creatable World - shoes, top and sunglasses with a bracelet by me, a scarf that is just a couple of pieces of ribbon yarn and a pair of dark denim, glitter imbued flares which came from the Dollar Tree in the late 1990s.
Tumblr media
Next week. New outfits, new accessories and camping. Mal thinks I made this doll look like Jimmy Page with the power of my mind.

Purchased two creatable world dolls recently through the Walmart website. I got my package and had two of the same doll, which wasn’t right, and one of them has two right hands. Thanks to some wonderful customer service folks at Walmart and Mattel, I’ve gotten two free dolls out of this mishap.
I’m gonna take the win and enjoy the articulated bodies for future customs.
Also Mattel doesn’t have replacement hands for the cwds in stock so if this happens to any one else they’ll offer you a whole new doll kit.

mountain adventure with The Them
please consider reblogging :) follow for more ActionFigures FanArt
(AO3 link in replies)
description: the photos were made at table rock state park in NC. the 4 children dolls (and Dog) are shown climbing and walking around in the sun on large flattish boulders with shrubbery around them and blue sky and mountains in the distance.
note for doll people: i've used mattel Creatable World bodies and team stacie / harry potter heads for these hybrid dolls. they're roughly 1:6 scale like most of my others. i repainted the hair on the HP guys and gave adam strange eyes, but other than that there's not a whole lot of customizing involved. the clothes used are mostly CW and barbie, plus some others.

I spotted a Jojo Siwa fashion pack at Target last night, in their discount section. This was my favorite outfit of the set and you know what? It fits Jenny great! Added the rainboots from the creatable world rainy day pack (and the backpack) and she looks like she's ready for a fun adventure! Maybe the outfit could use a hat...

I want to get into doll repainting. Allot of the characters I want to make are male but finding good heads for them is hard. What head types do you suggest I use to use for male characters?
The heads from the Habsro Disney Princess dolls tend to by my go-to for a lot of characters- including male ones. I prefer a lot of my male OOAK dolls to have softer, but a still more stylized, look to their heads and faces, so a lot the Disney Princess dolls from Hasbro strike a pretty good balance with that. They’re also far more in abundance, unlike now discontinued doll lines like Monster High and Ever After High that are getting harder to find, so you’re more likely to find secondhand for cheap at thrift stores, yard sales, and flea markets, which is good if you just need the heads.
It depends on what kind of character you want to make, of course. For example, Cinderella’s head and face mold is the closest to having a cartoonish masculine look.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anna is also a good one. Her face mold and head shape would work for most incarnations of Link from Zelda, and for a lot of prepubescent and teenage boy characters in general.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Something to keep in mind is that the head sizes and face molds will very between the time these dolls were released, as you can see from the above photo. The smaller Anna head on the left was from a release to promote Olaf’s Frozen Adventure, the bigger one on the right was from the Comfy Princesses’ release for Wreck-It Ralph 2, and the head on the Creatable World body came from a 2015 Anna doll.
If you want something with more simple face sculpts and don’t mind using bigger heads(or if you’re confident in doing head shrinking), you can try using heads from Bratz Boyz.
You can also find Licca boy doll heads from Chinese sellers on Ebay, if you want to go for a more anime look in general.
