Meet Kikuo the Otherworldly Fox
Kikuo is a cherub-like white fox. Despite his diminutive height of 2' 5", he's 25 years old.
Not much is known about Kikuo, he's reluctant to open up where he comes from. All some of the citizens of EGO know is that he's a being from another world who has abilities and powers that render him practically untouchable!
Kikuo is a crafty and mischievous man who enjoys flexing his abilities to render others powerless and at his mercy. The fox is pompous, self-important, and loves antagonizing others when he's not trying to outright take advantage of them.
Kikuo manages to manipulate Jericho(Simon) into taking him and his friend in as sidekicks by playing into the Lynx's hero persona and taking advantage of his naivety. From there, he invites both himself and Andy to be the third roommate to Simon and Nikolas (much to the latter's annoyance).

Mature PA Fashion Archetype: The Editor
Considering some of my inspiration was 13 going on 30, I don't know if this is "Mature" but we vibe!
The Editor, inspired by The Devil Wears Prada, Ugly Betty, and 13 Going On 30. Of course, this is inspired by the fashion girly dreams of “the Chanel boots” like either Andy Sachs of Luke Skywalker, to your preference. But the fashion world is evolving to include new names, and the fashion girlies online are thrift-flipping queens. My goal is to balance both. You know this one is long because I actully remembered the Keep Reading for once:
Thrifty Girly
Slipdresses, camisoles, sleepwear as daywear- I’m not breaking new ground by pointing this one out, but the silky, sexy styling of a nightgown can range from Kate Bush- who has had a resurgence since last year- to Andy Sachs. If you were a stan of Ashley AKA bestdressed a few years ago, then you’ll know how cute these are.
Contrast. Combine garments regrdless of the gender that its intended for, wear princessy, fluffy skirts with a harness and combat boots, and clash your patterns against each other. The way to go is my making something about the outfit uniform to keep it cohesive, typically a colour-scheme.
Flipping- thrift-flips involve a bit of craftiness- take that plain t-shirt for 50p and some fabric markers, embroidery thread, patches, etc. Take a dress you like in at the waist, crop a men’s blazer etc. The key is finding what you like and perfecting it to your taste.
Emulating Designers
An article by JD Institute of Fashion Technlogy called the following the Top 10 Fashion Designers of All Time, so I picked 5 examples from that list! These aren’t necesarily my favourites, they were just a reference point.
Coco Chanel: to me, a Chanel look is black and white, potentially with a vibrant, candy-coloured pastel here or there, but I always think of black and white. Details include pearls, especially pearl buttons, a quilted bag, perhaps a bow, and the interlocking Cs.
Calvin Klein: I think of Back to the Future before I think of anything else, and I’m not a £50 t-shirt person… BUT, to emmulate Calvin Klein, you’ll need good quality denim, and a crisp, clean, probabaly white t-shirt. The style is very much basics, so to make it stand out without the branding, you’ll need them to be good-quality and well-fitting.
Donatella Versace: The New Arrivals section on the website is covered in slashes- all along the sides on some garments, across the chest in others- or deep cowls- like, to the navel. Cut-out details can be emmulated as modestly as a simple cold-shoulder, or go all the way. A deep V can go as high or as low as you like. I’m seeing mostly black, with some purple and bright pink.
Ralph Lauren: I think of a very preppy, classic, menswear look when I think of Ralph Lauren. This is what you wear to play golf on a superyacht, or whatever it is that rich people do… strong-coloured linen shirts, navy and white, and I’m seeing so many stong-contrasting stripes. I’m also seeing a lot of leather braided belts, which might not be the first thing you think of, but it adds to the nautical vibes.
Christian Dior: Dior invented the New Look, so you know that’s where I’m going on. That original outfit consisted of a long black skirt to the mid-calf and a white blazer that tapered in at the waist. You need that fifties dream skirt to really go classic, and I think to this day the deliver dresses that emphasise an hourglass shape.

Nearly 17 months after being ordered to series, CBS’ Matlock not-a-reboot finally got to reveal its big twist.
Debuting Sunday night in a special time slot, Matlock stars Emmy and Academy Award winner Kathy Bates as Madeline “Matty” Matlock, a septuagenarian who uses her “invisible” older woman status to procure intel on a pending court case and in doing so finagle herself a job at the prestigious Jacobson Moore law firm in New York.
And yes, Matty is well aware of how her surname evokes the famous TV lawyer played by Andy Griffith on the NBC/ABC series of the same name, from 1986 to 1995.
Tumblr media
Assigned to Olympia (Good Sam‘s Skye P. Marshall), a senior attorney and onetime rainmaker for the firm, Matty works alongside younger associates Billy (David Del Rio) and Sarah (Leah Lewis), all the while alluding to her woes as the broke widow of a cheating, gambling husband, and caretaker for her late daughter’s brat of a son.
After coming through with a clutch witness to bolster Olympia’s latest case, Matty turned down celebratory drinks with Billy and Sarah, to instead catch her bus home. Thing is, Matty hopped off the bus after just one stop, then ducked into an alley where a limo driver awaited “Mrs. Kingston.” Matty was then driven to a large, handsome home, where she was greeted by her very-much-alive husband and her doting grandson, Alfie. It was then revealed, bit by bit, that Alfie had backstopped his grandma’s new identity with a LinkedIn profile and such, and how “Matlock” was chosen both a tribute to his late mom Ellie’s favorite TV show, and to disarm Matty’s coworkers with its folksy familiarity.
Avenging Ellie’s death, which was due to opiates not taken off the market soon enough by Jacobson Moore’s big pharma client, is Madeline’s true mission — and Olympia, Olympia’s ex-husband Julian (Jason Ritter), and firm founder Senior (Beau Bridges) are each in her crosshairs….
Tumblr media
TVLine spoke with Matlock showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman, formerly of Jane the Virgin, about this atypical manner of using IP to launch a new show, and what Matty’s mission will look like. (With additional reporting by Keisha Hatchett)
TVLINE | Did any version of this show exist without the Matlock element? Was it ever just “crafty older woman infiltrates the law firm that did her daughter wrong”? No. I had been working on other original pieces, and then I was thinking about what I was going to produce as a producer, and I thought of the Matlock title. I really love legal shows. Then, when I found out that [NCIS: Los Angeles vet/Matlock executive producer] Eric Christian Olsen had [the rights], he was like, “Yeah, you guys can join if you write it.”
I have learned to never say yes or no on gut. I have to take a walk and think. And when I took a walk, I started to think of, you know, Andy Griffith, who he was…. I write things that are female-driven, there’s no secret about that, so this would of course be an older woman. And then I started to think about how an older woman is very different from an older man in society. And that started to spool out into other ideas about this character, and what she would be doing, and how it all sort of unfolded around Matlock, because that was the piece of material I was being offered.
TVLINE | I think what you wound up with was a clever and unexpected approach to IP. I appreciate that.
Tumblr media
TVLINE | When this was first announced what must feel like two years ago for you, the reaction was, “A Matlock reboot? With Kathy Bates? What, is she his daughter, a granddaughter…?” You must have been biting your tongue, holding onto this twist. Yeah, it’s been tricky, because there’s obviously a lot of things that are like, “Why do we need this? Eyeroll!” And all of the Simpsons memes and stuff. But I knew what the show was, and I knew that people would see a screener and understand it was a different take, and what that specific take was. That was an interesting exercise for me, lulling the audience with all the contours of something familiar, and then revealing that we’re going to give them something totally different. And that’s what Matty is doing at the law firm, saying to everyone, “I’m just this old lady and my name is Matlock.”
TVLINE | But she also could have used the name “Perry Mason,” theoretically. Though he wasn’t very cuddly. He was a more stern. Totally. Whereas Matlock was this folksy, older lawyer from the South.
Tumblr media
TVLINE | We just saw Mrs. Kingston’s “murder board” with the three photos. As the season unfolds, will she alternately side-eye Julian, Olympia and Senior…? Well, what happens is she has specific missions in each episode, things that she has to figure out that are going to get her closer to realizing something. Sometimes you know what her mission is, and sometimes you’re surprised and don’t realize it at the end of the episode, because I want to always have that card-flip. It’s not easy corroborating something from 14 years ago, but she has working theories. Sometimes they pan out, sometimes there are twists, and by the end of this first season, it will be totally solved.
TVLINE | And Yael Grobglas (Jane the Virgin), her upcoming character will be a big problem for Matty? She’s a jury consultant, so she’s kind of like a human lie detector. She’s good at reading body language, telling if people are lying, so putting that person in front of Matty is going to pressure her. We were thinking, “What is the most terrifying thing that could be in Matty’s life?” And it would be somebody that is skilled at detecting the truth.
TVLINE | How does Matty’s grandson Alfie play into her mission? What is she learning from him, and what can he teach her? I’ve been conscious to not make our Matty a Luddite and not able to use any tech. She is a 75-year-old woman in the world who knows how to email and knows how to FaceTime…. [For her and Alfie] it is about this thing that they do together. And it becomes about healing their relationships with his mother, this cathartic thing. The technical skills and the things that he teaches her in terms of tech and all of that is important, but it’s really the shared mission that these two people have, and what they’re both trying to heal, and how they’re trying to do that together, and what the relationship becomes for both of them. The person that’s missing between Matty and her grandson is her daughter, so them coming together is creating a space where they can heal from that wound.

Mantus: Demonic Disciples a PNR Contemporary Romance by Andie Fenichel is LIVE!
Mantus I have a job to do. I don’t like it, but that doesn’t change anything. Find the shifters and send them back to hell. That’s the work. It’s not as if I have a choice. I’ve been tracking this last assignment for nearly a month. He’s a crafty one. I’ve got him pinned down at a fancy wedding venue when I’m stopped at the door by a woman who clearly doesn’t know who I am or have any instincts for danger. As my prey disappears into a crowded dance floor, I’m struck by just how perfectly beautiful this party planner is.
Felicity I don’t care how big or how beautiful a wedding crasher is, no one uninvited gets in on my watch. It doesn’t matter that my lady parts are on fire from the moment I see him. He’s imposing and grumpy, but I can’t take my eyes off him. For the briefest moment when he stares into my eyes, I think I’m too weak to stop this giant. Then I remember I’m the wedding planner and two can play the intimidation game.

Favorite thing about them: Mr I-don’t-know!! I love how crafty he is and how he plays to win. You wouldn’t expect him to be so great at strategies, because he’s introduced as such a chill guy, so when it’s revealed just how crafty he really is, I was left both terrified and impressed :)
Least favorite thing about them: What he did to Lan Xichen :( I know this story has a lot of themes, including the cycle of hatred and revenge and how it can corrupt. I don’t blame nhs for seeking revenge or even for how he went about it. If I look at it from nhs’s point of view, he had an incredibly powerful enemy to take down and in order to avoid the same fate that his brother did, he would have to proceed carefully. But still. Those that he used to reach his goal got me like “damn.” That last scene when he called out to lxc. I just don’t think it was an accident or that jgy was lying. I think nhs saw that lxc was going to let jgy down easy and he just… ensured that he wouldn’t. (I hope me being critical of nhs does not cover up the fact that I adore him! There are very few characters in this story I truly dislike. You’ll know who they are by the way I refuse to talk about them 😂)
Favorite line: When wwx was apologizing to nhs about lwj destroying his porn book and he was like “oh don’t worry. i’ve got plenty of porn” 😂
BROTP: HIM AND JIANG CHENG!! Listen, they’re both the same age, they were friends during their youth, they were both thrown into the position of sect leader at a young age, there are some highjinks and adventures between them that we the audience are not seeing because we are always following wwx around 💔
OTP: Can I also say sangcheng? I just think they work so well together! I’d like to see them as bros and I’d like to see them as lovers. I’m also a bit intrigued by the idea of sangyao (you can blame the magnificent fic yearning for miles for that)
NOTP: Shipping him with his brother or lan xichen
Random Headcanon: I like to think he’s an incredibly good painter and would start commissions if that were a thing in his world :)
Unpopular opinion: Idk if this is an unpopular opinion, but I think he needs to pass along the chief cultivator position to jiang cheng. I think nhs would do a good job, I just fear that it will darken his spirits more? I think the guy needs a long vacation. And JC is a workaholic so I think he’d be a better fit for the job.
Song I Associate with them: The chorus for whatcha say…It’s this snl video. I think of that video. I’m sorry but andy samberg is nhs and bill hader is jgy 🤣
Favorite Picture of Them: This one :)

DM: The inside of Tersei's cottage is warm and homely. It's pretty small, so Hesty's armour won't fit inside.
Lyra (playing Hesty): *makes face*
DM: There's a scent of various herbs and flowers. A cauldron over the fire is bubbling and a kettle is just beginning to whine. There are lots of bead-and-feather type decorations, rugs on the floor, striped curtains. There's a single door leading off the main room.
Andy (playing Diardi): I'd like to see if I can spot leftover materials from dollmaking. Straw, rags, a crafting table?
DM: She does seem the crafty type, but you don't see any of the materials the dolls are made of. She reluctantly offers you tea.
Andy: What kind?
DM: A variety of herbs and juniper.
Andy: Ooh.
Adam (playing Harriet): I definitely take some.
DM: There's only one seat at the table, which she takes without seeming to consider that she has guests. There's also an armchair and a rocking chair in corners of the room.
Marijn (playing Winnifred): I say, "I think there's been a misunderstanding. You didn't make the dolls, did you?"
DM: She says, "No. But I'm not surprised they sent you here. Anytime anything bad happens, of course Tersei did it."
Andy: "Why do they think that?"
DM: She makes a sour face. "They don't like things that are different. They got it in their heads I'm a witch, so obviously I'm a spooky person who has it out for them."
Lyra: "Aren't you a witch?"
DM: She half-shrugs. "I can brew a few simple potions, but I don't know that that qualifies me as a witch. I don't care that they think I can turn them all into toads. It keeps them at a distance."
Andy: *sighs* So she's an herbalist.
Adam: Yeah, and she's being treated like shit!

I missed my full recap last game because I was at the game watching LIVE but I’d feel weird if I didn’t keep it going, SO IM GONNA DO IT. Even though I am le tired
USWNT v Jamaica
Franch - I love her with my whole heart. She didn’t have to do too much. I’ll take it. I’m glad she’s back in camp
Abby - like I said before. Weirdly shaky. Not bad. Just more bobbling of the ball and back on her heels? I have no idea.
Tierna - so calm. So composed. COOL AS A CUCUMBER. The center backs didn’t have to do too much but I’d say she did enough to make her case as to why she should be playing more.
Sonnett - I talked her up all first half and then the second was pretty meh. She seemed to get in her own head after the defensive error which is a bummer. But as far as defenders go, she was doing the most running. Truly end line to end line. I thought she linked up with Rose and Midge SO well. And her and Kristie have a good passing connection as well. OH. And she had some nice crosses
Crystal - what can I say besides solid fucking half because Crystal Dunn is a consistently AMAZING player. Her one perfectly timed slide in the box was 😍
Lindsey - I mean, I’d prefer if she wasn’t the holding mid because it’s a more boring position for her. But she’s p damn good at it. Her passes were slightly off today but still solid game. Its just annoying knowing what she could be doing if she didn’t have to hang back so much
Cat - a quieter game for her. Would have preferred her at forward personally, but she didn’t have a bad game. Just not a stand out one. She had some crafty passing in and around the box that hit some deflections but the idea was THERE.
Rose. Oh sweet Rose. She was KILLING it until she went down. Despite only being in 30 minutes, the impact she had. I mean, come on. Hope she’s okay and stays healthy. The towel girl business is not for her. **side note, Lalas was blaming that one reckless foul on Sonnett but it was DEF Rose. She WRECKED that girl 😬
Sam - Sammy came right in, no warm up and was SO. GOOD. She is totally in her element and after listening to her talk about her being an alternate in 2016 and now being such a key player for this Olympics is so crazy. She deserves this. She was alllll over the field and her vision to get that assist to Alex. Perfection.
Kristie - so so happy to see her go in. Her corners and free kicks are lethal. She wasn’t as quick and sharp as we’ve gotten used to but I’m fully okay blaming the late game and all of that fucking tape holding her hamstring in place. There were a few near sister connection goals which would have been sweet. And when she screamed for that one ball from Sonnett and it came just a touch late and off... coulda shoulda woulda been a goal
Andi - wish she had more minutes. She keeps getting called in and there’s not a lot of time to see what she can do. I thought she played physical and solid for the time she was in
Carli - scored that goal! She sure did that! It was a sick set up and a beautiful ball in from Rose and she was in the perfect spot. Good for Grandma!
Alex - not a lot to say. She let that one ball roll through and had a good opportunity. And her finish was awesome! But I forgot she was out there most of the second half oops
Lynn - honestly didn’t get much of an opportunity to do things because the ball just wasn’t on her side. She was instrumental to getting Sam the ball for the assist to Alex so big positive there. Didn’t get to see speedy runs from her. But tbh, after sitting in the bench and coming in after 10 pm, I don’t blame her for being tired
Sophia - did fine. I think she’s an amazing player. Has she settled into international level pace? Not yet. She has moments of brilliance but I swear to god she watches and waits for the ball to come to her and when it gets intercepted I just about lose my mind.
And I saved the ANGEL GIRLS FOR LAST. BECAUSE CHRISTEN AND MIDGE WERE DOING THE MOST.
Christen didn’t have an overly eventful game. But when she had the ball, she was making a difference. Drawing the PK so strategically, tucking her shoulder underneath to make sure she was in front of the defender so it was an actual push? Genius. And the assist to Midge? And those were just the goal opportunities moments for her. She’s just the best.
And MIDGE. She’s making damn fucking sure Vlatko has her on that roster for Tokyo holy shit. The work on offense to keep and shield the ball, to work with her mid and defender to open things up, the crosses, the runs, the GOAL. This is Midge’s best national team showing so far for sure. It was beautiful to watch. And defense was uneventful but she held it down there too. YOU JUST LOVE TO SEE IT
I’m gonna go pass out now. Can’t wait for Wednesday

let's talk about andi mack's worldbuilding
sorry this took forever to make! i've been pretty busy with school stuff and i kind of lost my inspiration for a bit, but i ultimately really enjoyed writing it! i wish i could've included more pics (tumblr has a max of 10 per post), and it kinda turned from less of a mini analysis to more of an extremely long rant... but i hope it's still a fun read!
i've been rewatching the show over the past few weeks (thanks again to @disneymack for the link!), and i’ve been noticing a lot that i never did the first time around. this is really the first time i’ve watched the show from start to finish since it aired, and it honestly feels so different this time - probably a combination of the fact that i’m not as focused on plot and can appreciate the show as a whole, and also that the fandom is much, much smaller now, so there’s a lot less noise. so the way i’m consuming this show feels super different than it did the first time, but the show itself doesn’t - it’s just as warm and comforting to me as it was the first time around, if not more so.
i think a lot of that can be attributed to andi mack’s “worldbuilding”. i’m not quite sure that this is the right word in this context, to be honest, because i mostly see it used in reference to fantasy and sci-fi universes, but it just sort of feels right to me for andi mack, because you can really tell how much love and care went into constructing this universe. for clarity, worldbuilding is “the process of creating an imaginary world” in its simplest sense. there’s two main types: hard worldbuilding, which involves inventing entire universes, languages, people, cultures, places, foods, etc. from scratch (think “lord of the rings” or “dune”), and soft worldbuilding, in which the creators don’t explicitly state or explain much about the fictional universe, but rather let it’s nature reveal itself as the story progresses (think studio ghibli films). andi mack to me falls in the soft worldbuilding category. even though it takes place in a realistic fiction universe, there’s a lot of aspects to it that are inexplicably novel in really subtle ways.
so watching the show now, i’ve noticed that the worldbuilding comes primarily from two things - setting and props, and oftentimes the both of them in tandem (because a big part of setting in filmmaking does depend on the props placed in it!).
one of the most obvious examples is the spoon. it really is a sort of quintessential, tropic setting in that it's the main gang's "spot", which automatically gives it a warm and homey feel to it. and its set design only amplifies this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the choice to make it a very traditional 50s-style diner creates a very nostalgic, retro feel to it, which is something that's really consistent throughout the show, as you'll see. from the round stools at the bar, to the booths, to the staff uniforms, this is very obvious. the thing that i found especially interesting about it though is the choice of color. the typical 50s diner is outfitted with metallic surfaces and red accented furnishings, but the spoon is very distinctly not this.
instead, it's dressed in vibrant teal and orange, giving it a very fresh and modern take on a classic look. so it still maintains that feeling of being funky and retro, but that doesn't retract from the fact that the show is set distinctly in modern times.
of course, this could just be a one-off quirky set piece, but this idea of modernizing and novelizing "retro" things is a really common motif throughout the show. take red rooster records. i mean, it's a record shop - need i say more? it's obviously a very prominent store in shadyside, at least for the main characters, but there's no apparent reason why it is (until season 2 when bowie starts working there, and jonah starts performing there). a lot of the time, though, it functions solely as a record shop. vinyl obviously isn't the most practical or convenient way of listening to music, but it's had its resurgence in pop culture even in the real world, mostly due to its aesthetic value, so it's safe to say that it serves the same purpose in the andi mack universe.
Tumblr media
the fringe seems to be nostalgic of a different era, specifically the Y2K/early 2000s period (because it's meant to be bex's territory and symbolic of who she used to be, and its later transformation into cloud 10 is representative of her character arc, but that's beside the point). to be honest, exactly what this store was supposed to be always confused me. it was kind of a combination party store/clothing store/makeup store/beauty parlor? i think that's sort of the point of it though, it's supposed to feel very grunge-y and chaotic (within the confines of a relatively mellow-toned show, of course), and it's supposed to act as a sort of treasure chest of little curios that both make the place interesting and allow the characters to interact with it.
Tumblr media
and, of course, there's andi shack. this is really the cherry on top of all of andi mack's sets, just because it's so distinctly andi. it serves such amazing narrative purpose for her (ex. the storyline where cece and ham were going to move - i really loved this because it highlights its place in the andi mack universe so well, and i'm a sucker for the paper cranes shot + i'm still salty that sadie's cranes didn't make it into the finale) and it's the perfect reflection of andi's character development because of how dynamic it is (the crafts and art supplies can get moved around or switched out, and there's always new creations visible).
Tumblr media
going back to the nostalgia motif though, the "shack" aspect of it always struck me as very treehouse-like. personally, whenever i think of treehouses, there's this very golden sheen of childhood about it, if that makes sense. i've always seen treehouses in media as a sort of shelter for characters' youthful innocence and idealistic memories. for example, the episode "up a tree" from good luck charlie, the episode "treehouse" from modern family, and "to all the boys 2" all use a treehouse setting as a device to explore the character's desire to hold onto their perfect image of their childhood (side note: this exact theme is actually explored in andi mack in the episode "perfect day 2.0"!). andi shack is no exception to this, but it harnesses this childhood idealism in the same way that it captures the nostalgia of the 50s in the spoon, or the early 2000s in the fringe. it's not some image of a distant past being reflected through that setting; it's very present, and very alive, because it reflects andi as she is in the given moment.
some honorable mentions of more one-off settings include the ferris wheel (from "the snorpion"), the alley art gallery (from "a walker to remember"), SAVA, the color factory (from "it's a dilemna"), and my personal favorite, the cake shop (from "that syncing feeling").
Tumblr media
[every time i watch this episode i want to eat those cakes so bad]
these settings have less of a distinctly nostalgic feel (especially the color factory, which is a very late 2010s, instagram era setting), but they all definitely have an aura of perfection about them. andi mack is all about bright, colorful visuals, and these settings really play to that, making the andi mack universe seem really fun and inviting, and frankly very instagrammable (literally so, when it comes to the color factory!).
props, on the other hand, are probably a much less obvious tool of worldbuilding. they definitely take up less space in the frame and are generally not as noticeable (i'm sure i'll have missed a bunch that will be great examples, but i'm kind of coming up with all of this off the top of my head), but they really tie everything together.
for example, bex's box, bex's polaroid, and the old tv at the mack apartment (the tv is usually only visible in the periphery of some shots, so you might not catch it at first glance) all complement that very retro aesthetic established through the settings (especially the polaroid and the tv, because there's really no good reason that the characters would otherwise be using these).
Tumblr media
besides this, andi's artistic nature provides the perfect excuse for plenty of colorful, crafty props to amplify the visuals and the tone. obviously, as i discussed before, andi shack is the best example of this because it's filled with interesting props. but you also see bits of andi's (and other people's) crafts popping up throughout the show (ex. the tape on the fridge in the mack apartment, andi's and libby's headbands in "the new girls", walker's shoes, andi's phone case, and of course, the bracelet). not only does doing this really solidify this talent as an essential tenet of andi's character, but it also just makes the entirety of shadyside feel like an extension of andi shack. the whole town is a canvas for her crafts (or art, depending on how you want to look at it. i say it's both), and it immensely adds to shadyside's idealism. because who wouldn't want to live in a world made of andi mack's creations?
Tumblr media
and, while it's not exactly a prop, the characters' wardrobe is undoubtedly a major influence on the show's worldbuilding. true to it's nature as a disney channel show, all of the characters are always dressed in exceptionally curated outfits of whatever the current trends are, making the show that much more visually appealing. i won't elaborate too much on this, because i could honestly write a whole other analysis on andi mack's fashion (my favorites are andi's and bex's outfits! and kudos to the costume designer(s) for creating such wonderful and in-character wardrobes!). but, i think it's a really really important aspect of how the show's universe is perceived, so it had to be touched upon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[^ some of my favorite outfits from the show! i am so obsessed with andi's jacket in the finale, and i aspire to be at bex's level of being a leather jacket bisexual]
and lastly, phones. this is a bit of an interesting case (pun intended), because the way they're used fluctuates a bit throughout the show, but i definitely noticed that at least in the first season terri minsky tried to avoid using them altogether. these efforts at distancing from modern tech really grounds the show in it's idealist, nostalgia-heavy roots, so even when the characters start using their phones more later in the show, they don't alter the viewer's impression of the andi mack universe very much.
so, what does all of this have to do with worldbuilding? in andi mack's case, because it's set in a realistic universe and not a fantasy one, a lot of what sets it apart from the real world comes down to tone. because, as much as this world is based on our own, it really does feel separate from it, like an alternate reality that's just slightly more perfect than ours, which makes all the difference. it's the idealism in color and composition in andi mack's settings that makes it so unmistakably andi mack. even the weather is always sunny and perfect (which is incredibly ironic because the town is called shadyside - yes, i am very proud of that observation).
the andi mack universe resides somewhere in this perfect medium that makes it feel like a small town in the middle of nowhere (almost like hill valley in 1955 from "back to the future"), but at the same time like an enclave within a big city (because of its proximity to so many modern, unique, and honestly very classy looking establishments). it is, essentially, an unattainable dream land that tricks you into believing it is attainable because it's just real enough.
all this to say, andi mack does an amazing job of creating of polished, perfect world for its characters. this is pretty common among disney channel and nickelodeon shows, but because most other shows tend to be filmed in a studio with three-wall sets, andi mack is really set apart from them in that it automatically feels more real and tangible. it has its quintessential recurring locations, but it has far more of them (most disney/nick shows usually only have 3-4 recurring settings), and it has a lot more one-off locations. it's also a lot more considerate when it comes to its props, so rather than the show just looking garish and aggressively trendy, it has a distinctive style that's actually appropriate to the characters and the story. overall this creates the effect of expanding the universe, making shadyside feel like it really is a part of a wider world, rather than an artificial bubble. it's idealism is, first and foremost, grounded in reality, and that provides a basis for its brilliant, creative, and relatable storytelling.
tl;dr: andi mack's sets and props give it a very retro and nostalgic tone which makes its whole universe seem super perfect and i want to live there so bad!!

Badger Snakes and The "Red-Stained Ledger"
Since my recent announcement identifying as a Badger Snake (don't @ me if I change my primary at some point lol still going back over that one,) I've looked up some characters that have been identified as Badger Snakes, and found two things:
1) There weren't very many in fiction and
2) most go through the same personal journey I had described in my previous post.
By that, I mean, a very similar feeling of self-loathing or feeling as though you have some dirty secret to hide, AKA the Red-Stained Ledger Natasha Romanoff refers to. The two main ones that have been agreed upon I'll be focusing on are Woody from Toy Story and the aforementioned Black Widow, but I'll also be bringing two new characters into the fray, one that's been sorted as such based on the portrayal, and one that I've discovered on my own. They are Selina Kyle AKA Catwoman and Dewey Finn from School of Rock.
It's interesting to find the similar plotlines that certain sortings are given consistently in media, and The Power Behind the Throne AKA Badger Snake seems to pretty much only have the one: They fight for the group that they are loyal to, but they can't seem to help but do so in a way that they aren't proud of, one that they're sure would lead said group to shun them.
I'm sure someone could point out a character I'm not referencing here that doesn't have that plot, but at the very least, this plot dominates the sorting.
Woody in the first movie goes through exactly that issue. He only wants to fight for Andy's toys, and in many ways, all toys he comes across. He makes choices that he believes will benefit everyone, and prides himself on being able to make the "tough choices." But, he ends up having to do so in a "duplicitous" way, when he seeks to manipulate Buzz Lightyear out of his group. This is a horrible, dirty secret to him, and he feels almost as if he could never return to them, never show his face again because of how he chooses to fight. In the end, he reaffirms that his actions come from a good place, a place of love for his group, and finds ways to use his crafty talents that are slightly more constructive and a little less "cloak and dagger."
Natasha Romanoff has given me the namesake for this Badger Snake element: the Red-Stained Ledger. She describes her desire to fight for her country, for her family, but struggles with what she knows she's good at. She believes she's inherently a bad person and is determined to remain a loner due to her "badness," due to the "monster" she is. Good people don't lie or manipulate. Good people... uh... I dunno, bake cakes or something? Work humble jobs? But, her contribution to the world, her ability to be clever and tricky, means that holding her group, her country, her family, the Avengers themselves, only in her heart and not in her hands. But, her true colors are shown in her never-ending dedication to the cause, down to her being willing to give her life so that no one else has to do it. In a way, it's sad, because she died believing she in some way deserved it. But, none of her teammates felt that way about her. She may have been crafty, a master manipulator, and a skillful liar, but she was the farthest thing from bad.
Now, onto the two newer additions. I've seen Selina Kyle sorted as Double Snake, and I would agree that there are many interpretations that could fit the bill. But, if you ask me, the truest interpretation of her is as The Power Behind the Throne, the Robin Hood with no loud cause to shout from the rooftops; only a desire to help the people of Gotham. She uses her skills as a thief to act as a sort of "guardian angel" to the poorest in Gotham, but she has no grand statement to make. She sees people hurting, her group, the underdogs of Gotham, and came to their aid. But she does so quietly, secretly, because she believes in her heart that the way she has done so is not worthy of praise. She's a con and a thief, but, she places people above all else. She, in some interpretations, is one of the main people to open Bruce's eyes to the fact that not all criminals are necessarily bad people. Some of them are just in terrible situations they can't get out of. And yet, she won't afford that benefit of the doubt to herself, believing she is simply a broken toy not worth fixing. Her occasionally lackadaisical attitude towards killing may seem to make Badger primary unlikely, but Badgers are not always loyal to ALL humans. Her group is the poor and downtrodden, and those who act against them are less than human in her eyes.
Now, we come to my personal favorite, my own personal discovery: Dewey Finn from one of my favorite movies, School of Rock.
Dewey is a fabulous example of a Badger Snake, in my personal opinion. His chosen group is Rock with a Capital R and "the band," whichever band that may currently be. He may have some sort of Burnt Snake primary performance/model going on, wanting to play the part of a "rock star" that truly only cares about himself, but his true loyalty is very clear. He is worried about doing his chosen group justice in every way, making sure that Rock is being well-represented and that he's serving his current band the very best he has to offer. Being kicked out of his band at the very beginning is earth-shattering to him, not because he has a Snake primary style devotion to only them, but because they told him he let them down, and implying that he wasn't representing Rock the way he should. His Snake primary performance/model melts away as he bonds to his new band, the kids he teaches. He brings them into his chosen group of Rock and creates a new bonded group with them in particular as they form a band. He actually finds himself liberated by taking a backseat to the children (a very Badger primary thing to enjoy,) allowing Zack to play his song, guiding Freddie away from making bad choices, helping Tamika find her voice, encouraging fellow Snake secondary Summer how to use her shrewdness, and, using a method I believe is best utilized by Badger Snakes, helping Principal Mullins find her chill. Lol.
Badger Snakes, more than any other Snake secondary type, will rely on the "we aren't so different you and I" approach to get what they want. He finds out Mullins also enjoys Rock. This is something they have in common! Let's create a situation where we "naturally" find out we have this thing in common, placing us both in the same group. Although other primaries don't glorify groups as much as Badger primaries do, all people are more likely to listen to or help out someone they feel is like them in some way. So, Dewey puts some Stevie Nicks on the jukebox and gets Mullins on his side.
In a similar fashion to the characters listed above, Dewey believes he is truly a loser and has nothing of any actual value or goodness to provide. But, the children help him see he's wrong, and he finds a way to utilize his talents in a way that truly fulfills him.
In conclusion, although seemingly unrepresented, I think there actually may be quite a few more Badger Snakes hiding in media, and, perhaps, they can be outed by looking for the Red-Stained Ledger plotline. Badger primaries are more likely, in my opinion, to be disturbed by their actions than say a Lion primary, due to where their loyalties truly lie. Although Lions may fight for the right thing, and that right thing may involve people's rights or serving a group, they serve that right thing before any of the people they may steamroll over to achieve it. Badgers, by definition, serve things. And, usually, lying, cheating, or otherwise being crafty is viewed as the worst possible way to serve someone or something. They do care about the things they may hurt or damage through their actions, and how they use their talents does, in fact, matter to them immensely.
So, to my Badger Snakes out there struggling with their own so-called "Red-Stained Ledgers", just remember that Dewey Finn would think you're kick-ass.
Tumblr media
EDIT: Sorry, was thinking about it, and had to put an edit. Another way to think of this plotline/character archetype is mentioned in School of Rock as well as in a musical I know very well. I wouldn't use this moniker as the name for this plotline, only because it describes a very specific Snake secondary, one that is playful and light-hearted, and not all Snake secondaries are like this.
Zack's song refers to Dewey as The Magic Man, a person that swoops in and, almost by magic (in actuality, manipulation) brings out the best in the people around them. In the aforementioned musical, this character is called The Music Man.
Harold Hill may very well be another Badger Snake, although one more heavily disguised than Dewey Finn. I won't go too deep into his characterization here, but know he's a conman who claims to be a band instructor, while he has no musical talent himself, planning on taking the money for the uniforms and instruments and running. Instead, almost without realizing it, he encourages and manipulates the people of the town he enters into becoming better versions of what they are now. And, the most tragic part of his character is revealed once another character, one of the children he's conned, points out that there isn't a band, and never has been one. Harold tells him "I always think there's a band, kid."
It's interesting that, in both of these cases, they are associated with music and an almost mystical ability to bring out the best in others. I might do a more in-depth look at Harold Hill at some point, since I've been planning on doing some musical characters for a bit.
If thinking about having a Red-Stained Ledger is too negative for your own self-image, think of yourself as The Music Man. Your friends and the people around you may actually see you as an almost mystical force for good, someone who always seems to know the right thing to say or do to bring out the best in them. :)

unwanted prog content: robert fripp’s questionable solo projects
bro what do you mean questionable. fripp is the least questionable person in the world. here are some of fripp’s greatest solo moments:
Tumblr media
take his hand. we must go into fripp land
- look at these lyrics from exposure and try not to get fripped
Tumblr media
- one of fripp’s greatest moments was when he made brian eno have a solo career. eno’s management hated no pussyfooting so much they basically grounded fripp from collaborating with him for a few years so eno could be the next david bowie
- watch the i advance masked video. robert fripp and andy summers (of the police) have beautiful girls dance all around them while playing the least sexy nerd music i’ve ever heard in my entire life. fripp sits on his stool and doesnt move a single inch except to turn his head to stare into your soul. dr. bunsen honeydew lookin ass
Tumblr media
- you can find several videos of the “league of crafty guitarists” aka robert fripp’s not-so-secret guitar cult where he forces all these poor young guitarists to play his noodley guitar music that doesn’t make sense to anyone but fripp
Tumblr media
- apparently toyah and fripp collaborated on an album where toyah reads stories entirely in victorian english while fripp does his frippertronics in the background. couple goals
- now you might be like “yeah haha no pussyfooting haha fucking frippertronics”. well guess what. this is no laughing matter for fripp. the real reason he wants to collaborate with everyone is so he can buy and sell dildos
“I receive a letter from Fripp, a reply to the one I wrote to him suggesting that we get together again soon. He says, "I am prepared to work with you only if you buy from me a brand-new dildo... He goes on to describe its sophistication and versatility and requests that I send him £28 immediately "before your career suffers further by delay." He signs himself Meanie Mouth.“ - Brian Eno

our favorite skeletons (plus andy and antwan) opinions on among us, go!
Hmm, well, if Edge could be persuaded, bribed, or blackmailed into playing Among Us, he doesn’t care for it. Not only because he’s not particularly fond of video games but also, he’s not a very good liar and Stretch can always catch him out. Plus, he gets very focused on finishing his tasks, quit killing him, damn it, he needs to fix the wires!
Antwan is a lawyer. ‘nuff said about his ability to lie.
Stretch loves it and he is infuriating to play against because he’ll blithely lie about anything and everything, things that don’t even matter, and then cheerfully admit to being an imposter which of course, no one knows whether or not to believe, and they know he’ll happily screw them over by getting ejected whether or not he’s an imposter. He might not win the game, but he sure gets to his personal goal, a lot, by sheer force of bullshit.
Jeff is the surprise underdog who comes out on top a lot simply by being quick, crafty, and quiet. While everyone else is arguing about who dun it and whose lying, he’s silently murdering crewmates with glee. No one suspects pink, his little flower makes him look so innocent!!
