Comparing your work to other people's is a great way to kill your joy for a thing so let me be clear and say this is not that, I am just a human person with human emotions and sometimes that means needing to be the tiniest bit petty and then moving on. You know. For your health or something.

There is a very popular cosplayer who coincidentally keeps doing the same costumes as me, and I am just the tiniest bit annoyed about it, because as is the case with many (...most) very popular cosplayers, they have a very specific, airbrushed, conventionally attractive, perfect makeup, etc aesthetic to all their photos that is. Not what I personally value in cosplay, at least. Which is fine! Different people having different approaches to costumes is part of what makes cosplay such an interesting hobby!

But it does bother me a tiny bit that the work I put into my costumes is not necessarily the kind of work that gets attention, and it does make it a little glaringly obvious when it's The Same Characters.

(Also you all know the kinds of characters I cosplay. I gravitate towards them in part because they have weird energy, not super put together attractive energy. But that's only part of my point.)

Anyways. I do not follow them on Instagram because why would I do that, but nonetheless I saw that they're apparently also doing a Laois cosplay now, which I guarantee will get lots more attention than mine. And for the most part that's fine, I love cosplay and I love doing my weird little thing and I especially love that I do in fact know other people that value the same things as me & that we have fun together. I will have a great time in my fun little costume, dressing up with my friends in their fun little costumes and I am looking forward to it. And I do not actually need likes to validate that I am becoming a pretty damn good cosplayer (whose stuff is better quality than many popular cosplayers' because I care more about craftsmanship than I do getting attention). I am even thinking pretty seriously about having Laois be my first ever competition costume if the armor turns out alright, because I think I'm genuinely getting to that level.

But it would just be kind of neat if being a weird little guy with weird little ideas who is into the hobby because I like sourcing historical patterns and materials and thinking about the worldbuilding that goes into costumes and creating neat little "in-universe" ephemera to hand out to people and all the things I like didn't always mean getting overshadowed by Instagram Perfect Attractive People.

Alas. Okay glad that's out of my system I'm normal again. I'm going to make some more chain mail.

Malleus is talking about gargoyles again—his voice rich and animated, eyes alight with excitement as he gestures enthusiastically. You’re half-listening, lost in the way his expression softens when he describes the intricate details of their design, the admiration in his tone as he marvels at their craftsmanship.

You don’t know when it hits you, but suddenly, you’re back in a familiar moment—a memory of sitting with Ace, Deuce, and Epel, their nosy voices ringing in your ears.

“Come on, just tell us! Who’s your crush?” Ace had prodded, grinning like the menace he is.

Deuce had chimed in with a teasing, “You have to like someone, right?”

And Epel, smirking knowingly, had said, “Bet they’re someone we wouldn’t expect.”

You hadn’t answered then, brushing it off with a laugh, but now, as you watch Malleus ramble so passionately about something he loves, the realization knocks the wind out of you.

It’s him.

It’s always been him—his curiosity, his gentle heart, his quiet moments, and his wide, genuine smile when he’s with you. You’ve seen so many sides of Malleus Draconia, and all of them, every last piece, have nestled their way into your heart.

And maybe it’s impulsive, or maybe it’s been a long time coming, but you can’t hold it in anymore.

“Malleus,” you blurt out, cutting him off mid-sentence.

He pauses, blinking at you in surprise, his hands still mid-gesture. “Yes? Did I lose you? I can elaborate—”

“No, no.” You shake your head, nerves tangling in your chest, but your voice stays steady. “I need to tell you something.”

Malleus tilts his head, clearly curious but patient as ever. “Of course. What is it?”

You take a breath, feeling warmth creep up your neck. “I like you, Malleus. I think I have for a long time.”

There’s a beat of silence, and then his expression shifts—his eyes widen, glowing softly in the dim light. His lips part slightly, and for a moment, you swear he forgets how to breathe.

And then it happens—his face breaks into a smile, one so radiant and sincere it feels like the world tilts on its axis. You’ve never seen anything so beautiful. It’s pure joy, unrestrained and unfiltered, lighting up his face like a summer dawn.

“Truly?” he breathes, his voice low and full of wonder.

“Truly,” you answer softly, a little breathless at how dazzling he looks. “I couldn’t stop myself from falling for you if I tried.”

Malleus steps closer, his gaze holding yours with such intensity it sends your heart racing. “You’ve made me happier than I ever thought possible.”

And before you can second-guess it, you lean in and kiss him, your hands resting gently against his chest. Malleus freezes for a split second before he melts into it, his arms carefully circling you, like he’s holding something precious.

When you finally pull back, his smile remains, his eyes soft and bright. “You’ve given me a gift beyond compare.”

You laugh, your cheeks warm as you poke his chest playfully. “You’re so dramatic.”

“But you seem to love it,” he counters, grinning as he pulls you closer once again.

And you do—you really, truly do.

“Odysseus planted an olive tree there”, “Odysseus just carved an olive tree”, “Jorge took creative liberties in his song writing”.

You wanna know what I think. I think that the olive tree that Penelope and Odysseus met under in Sparta WAS still in Sparta, but Odysseus, upon successfully wooing Penelope, took that olive tree (with Athena’s support) and moved it all the way to Ithaca.

He then planted it in Ithaca and build his castle around that exact olive tree, which is also their wedding bed. When he showed Penelope the bed and she made the assumption that this is just an olive tree from Ithaca, because no one in their right mind would transport the exact olive tree that they met under all the way from Sparta to Ithaca just to build a wedding bed out of it, especially Odysseus because he’s way too smart to do something like that and there are plenty of olive tree trees in Ithaca already, Odysseus got super embarrassed and decided to not tell her about it.

So whenever Penelope makes the joke about moving it, Odysseus gets super tweaked out because not only did it take him a lot of effort to move and carve this olive tree, but if they do remove it, he’s afraid Penelope will realize it’s from Sparta and he’s too deep to admit it now. Penelope just thinks that he’s very proud and passionate about his craftsmanship. That’s what I think. Torch me all you want but you know I’m right.
