“Odysseus planted an olive tree there”, “Odysseus just carved an olive tree”, “Jorge took creative liberties in his song writing”.

You wanna know what I think. I think that the olive tree that Penelope and Odysseus met under in Sparta WAS still in Sparta, but Odysseus, upon successfully wooing Penelope, took that olive tree (with Athena’s support) and moved it all the way to Ithaca.

He then planted it in Ithaca and build his castle around that exact olive tree, which is also their wedding bed. When he showed Penelope the bed and she made the assumption that this is just an olive tree from Ithaca, because no one in their right mind would transport the exact olive tree that they met under all the way from Sparta to Ithaca just to build a wedding bed out of it, especially Odysseus because he’s way too smart to do something like that and there are plenty of olive tree trees in Ithaca already, Odysseus got super embarrassed and decided to not tell her about it.

So whenever Penelope makes the joke about moving it, Odysseus gets super tweaked out because not only did it take him a lot of effort to move and carve this olive tree, but if they do remove it, he’s afraid Penelope will realize it’s from Sparta and he’s too deep to admit it now. Penelope just thinks that he’s very proud and passionate about his craftsmanship. That’s what I think. Torch me all you want but you know I’m right.
