Are you prepared for what you have asked?

I may have had some thoughts about headcrabs.

They aren’t from Xen (I see Xen as the border world / pit stop dimension), there’s nothing there they can latch onto and Vortigaunts are familiar with them so in my mind Headcrabs, Vorts, and Antlions all come from the same planet/dimension. Vorts may or may not be immune to them. I’ve seen someone post about zombie vorts and IT’S SO COOL AND SAD. 

Anyways! Headcrabs are alien beings. Our grasp of biology doesn’t apply but again headcrab blog has headcrab thoughts. They aren’t hot or cold blooded, but lose heat and therefore energy quickly so they need a host to grab or they burrow in the sand to save energy/ ambush prey. 

You see unattached headcrabs hunting but attached ones just chill on the host until they aggro. I also think it’s canon but if not like freshly made zombies are definitely still alive-ish / have a fucked up parasite ratatouille situation going on. Fast headcrabs transform their hosts over a few days but it’s also a complete mental takeover. 

Poison headcrabs kill/blind their prey almost immediately without the antidote so they have to latch onto a host quickly to keep it alive so they have it as a source for food/ warmth. That’s why there’s 4 on the back of one poison zombie. They are fucked up little cats that launch at new host options to claim new space/food. They also can be flung huge ass distances and are a pain so the combine saves poison headcrab shells for isolated places. Ravenholm has what? 2 or 3? So you know they were pulling out all the stops.

You CANNOT EAT THIS ONE! I read the tags on that stupid post I made but you absolutely should not try and eat them. It’s also too much of a risk with little payoff. Now harvesting them for study/ research of turning toxin into medicine is a very good and human thing to do.

I feel like headcrabs also have the most fucked up skeleton-like structures like a weird mostly cartilage endoskeleton to allow them to take damage/ be flexible/ lightweight. They have to have the muscle to jump and I think their back legs should be more frog-like or longer on the standard headcrab but also they look cuter with the stubs.
