2020 Honda CR500RA ultralight prototype v2.0...the lightest wheels possible, front tires update with a super light new Michelin Sorry for the delayed post…trying to get back on track since most of my time has been consumed with non-moto work and working on a new shop/home in SoCal. This bi-coastal thing is a time killer…but we’re getting there. Now, off to a front tire update in the industry. There is a new lightweight king and we now have a match for the worlds lightest rear MX tire which is also a Michelin New front tire lightweight king as of ~Jan. 2021 is also a Michelin, de-throning the previous king by Metzeler, the 6-Days Extreme 80/100-21 at 7.725 lbs. 2020 Honda CR500RA Ultralight project v2.0...pipes/silencer finally arrived and in place. I’ve been working with @1744_racecreations on this one for a while and it arrived while I was traveling for a bit…so just got my hands on it and I just love it…all of it. It fits like a glove and I can pick it up with my pinky finger 😂 at 1436g Two pipes…one is raw/pure Ti and the second is blue anodized/burned. 2020 Honda CR500RA Ultralight project v2.0...pipe/silencer update. Here is another peek 👀 at the full Ti/Carbon exhaust (double set...one blued and one clean/pure Ti). It is uber-light. As stated earlier, its cloned after J-M Bayles RC500 pipe design 🚀 from PC. I’ve been working with @1744_racecreations on this one for a while. We had to re-spin it one time to get it perfect 👌. 2020 Honda CR500RA Ultralight project v2.0...foot peg and mount update. Previously I had the lightest pegs you can buy on the market, the Al Flo pegs with stainless tips. They were lighter than all the other Ti offerings in the market since no one is being that careful with the amount of material they are using and they are overly thick and unnecessarily heavy. But...what about pegs you can’t buy 💡 👀. Through a contact I have I was able to get a set of factory HRC Ti pegs/mounts 🍾🎉🔥. I managed to scrape an extra 0.52 lbs. with the HRC Ti peg + Ti mount combination over the Al Flo pegs with modern 2016+ CRF mounts. I already had Ti pivot pins and bolts. One of the coolest things on the CR500RA ultralight build for me is the custom carbon fiber head stay @legacycarbonmx did for me. 2020 Honda CR500RA Ultralight project v2.0...brake rotors revisited. Motostuff v1 blade brake rotors are the lightest on the market and my favorite, but after some discussions with both @motostuff_com and @racetechtitanium, Racetech Titanium offered to work with me on a custom Ti set with my design input. Here is the result...they should have them for sale relatively soon. This will be their first Ti rotor offering for Honda CR/CRF...long overdue...here we go Motostuff blade v1 280mm front rotor: 501g Motostuff blade v1 240mm rear rotor: 419g Racetech Titanium 280mm Ti front rotor: 324g Racetech Titanium 240mm Ti rear rotor: 274g 920g - 598g = 322g (0.71 lbs.) gone from unsprung weight...pretty huge I wanted to stay oversize (280mm vs. stock 260mm) for the braking power, and hardened/heat treated Ti rotors offer a bit less friction than hardened/heat treated steel...so let’s keep all the stopping power we can and drop the weight, which is what this project is all about. #cr500 #cr500r #cr500ra #cr500af #500cc #500 #2stroke #twostroke #openclass #honda #hrc #cr #motocross #enduro #gncc #mx #gp #factory #lightweight #weightnerds #carbonfiber #titanium #brakes #motostuff_com #racetechtitanium https://www.instagram.com/p/CFihTdoAU_T/?igshid=14yleigfkazjn

2020 Honda CR500RA Ultralight project...last part of weight loss on the brakes. Previously I made a post on brake pads and weight with the Galfer 1054 compound semi-metallic pads being the lightest. I decided to take it one step further and had Clayton @trickeng to shave 🪒 the steel substrate of the brakes pads down to 2.5 mm from 3.1 mm. Two more slabs of steel gone. 2020 Honda CR500RA Ultralight project...more weight loss inside the wheels since I had the bearings out for the switch to ceramic. I realized the bearing spacer tubes inside were oversized beyond the contact area to the bearing center races (wasted material likely just for production tolerances). As part of a set of projects I sent to Clayton @trickeng I got him to mill down the tubes to match the inner bearing race thickness of 2 mm. 2020 Honda CR500RA Ultralight project... Ceramic bearings are super light, super hard, super slick, super efficient, and very tolerant to super high temps. Unfortunately they are expensive, so you won’t see them on production bikes. I have a supplier that was able to get me full ceramic (race and balls) ABEC5 (grade 5) Silicon Nitride bearings in 6905 and 6904 sizes that are double sealed (2RS). Compared to the OEM Koyo steel bearings that are only sealed on one side, they are slightly less than half the weight and will last far longer with no rust. The rear wheel has three 6905 bearings and the front has two 6904 bearings. 2020 Honda CR500RA Ultralight project...I couldn’t find any proper Showa SFF Air A-Kit suspension that was in good enough shape...super rare. So, I decided to cook up a third set of suspension from scratch and make my own based on 2017 CRF250R forks as a base (already had a shock). 😉 I spent a few days tearing apart and hyper-cleaning everything. Then, step 1 (white diamond) then step 2 (red rouge) mirror polished and baked the fork legs and shock shaft to out-gas any oils present. Next, I polished all of the shock cups/clips on the buffer as well. Various pieces are now off to different parts of the planet for Kashima anodize, mix of type 3 hard anodized red and black for various pieces, and deep-blue DLC for the fork tubes/shock shaft. Consider these the “before” pictures...🤓.
