ep2 is still the stage in watching where it's still kind of bad and im slightly embarrassed to have read so much heartfelt and well-written fanfic for it but I KNOW it gets really good I know it does

Random thought of the day:

I was re-re-rewatching some episodes from CQL for research purposes and, after watching soooo many behind-the-scenes, memes, bloopers, The Untamed On Crack videos, BJYX videos, they acting the scenes with their real voices, knowing HOW NOISY the filming actually was, etc etc etc... I now low-key think that it's really weird and difficult to watch the drama and dive myself on it again...... I mean, in almost every scene that I watch I remember the BTS footage behind it.

Like, I was trying to find which scene DD's blue hair peaks out of his wig and I believed it was on EP8 or EP9 based on the BTS videos (bc I've only seen the screenshot of it, never someone saying what actual scene/episode it was - BUT I had no luck and couldn't find it, maybe someday... anyways). This episode is the one that 1. Now I know that WYB HAS BLUE HAIR UNDER HIS WIG !!!! 2. on the BTS videos you see them struggling A LOT with bugs/mosquitoes 3. has the FAMOUS BTS where DD jokes "~do you want to sleep with me?" followed by GG's muted "Mama loves you" and DD's (maybe most famous quote of all) "ZHAN-GE DD AI NI" 4. has WYB's black shorts blooper.

In short, I wasn't able to concentrate properly on the plot and only think about all the background stories of it. Does anyone else suffer from this same problem? 😩

ep9 summary before all hell comes loose

zzs gradually allows wkx to come into his life, closer into his heart. they both excuse themselves from the yueyang sect to go back to the inn, where wkx has organized zzs roomservice and after some consideration (from zzs ofc) they sit down at his table to eat. zzs knows he wont be able to taste a single thing, but still wants to eat with wkx. wkx makes a tasteless allegory to comfort zzs and shares a story from his childhood. zzs reacts with compassion, realizing wkx is being emotionally vulnerable (!) with him and what he is sharing hurts him a lot. he softly encourages wkx to speak on, and physically reaches out comforting him. then he slaps his arm, because he flirts like a cat, and lets him know he doesnt appreciate cql being likened to a dog, which makes wkx laugh. this night, he experiences the disappearance of another of his senses, but calms down hearing the melody of wkx’s flute drifting through the night air. the next morning in the four sages scene, even though dragged out of bed to an ungodly hour by a gremlin, he is happy, peaceful in this scenery, telling wkx the story behind the sages that seems somewhat like his private dream of the ideal life, and they both speak about sharing their life with a soulmate, making eye contact having the same thought. zzs then grows wistful and internally mourns the fact he wont be able to do that, because of his condition, before coming to the conclusion there speaks nothing against spending the last few years of his life with wkx, exactly like this, despite or even because of what is going to happen. zzs is treating his life like the precious thing it is, he wont allow it go to waste anymore and if there is something he wants, he is going to take it. no matter that his original plan has changed, that what he originally wanted is now instead of living out his last few years alone in solitude, living them with wkx.

Mo Dao Zu Shi Donghua S1, Eps 8 - 15 (spoilers)

Well I feel emotionally devastated all over again. I. CRIED. SO. MUCH. Again. The whole Lotus Pier/Jiang fam tragedy just kills me. Heartbreaking no matter what format it's in.

Once again, there were scenes that were slightly different from the live action that I liked. Overall, the donghua still wins in terms of action scenes and special effects...kinda makes me sad the live action didn't have a bigger budget to successfully pull off big events like the Sunshot Campaign in an impressive way. Not to mention, those large moments just feels like they're constructed better...there's no awkward pacing and the camera work is simply flawless. Doesn't make me love the Untamed any less, but it does make me really appreciate the donghua. What am I saying, I pretty much love it completely now.

Ep8: actually seeing the Cloud Recesses burn down totally caught me off guard. I teared up. It was bad enough in the drama seeing the bodies of all those dead Lan Sect disciples all over the grounds and then hearing later that it was partially burned down, but watching it go down in flames like this was simply gut-wrenching.

Ep8: this moment was unique to the donghua and man was it harsh: Wen Zhuliu just shattered this poor kid's golden core because he wouldn't turn in his sword. Made me pretty much hate this version of the character so much more than his counterpart in The Untamed.

Ep9: the WangXian quotient in the donghua's Xuanwu cave scenes totally paled in comparison to the CQL's adaptation, imho. except for this tiny moment when Lan Zhan applied the medicinal herbs directly onto Wei Ying's brand. Hurray for bare skin contact!

Ep11: This is pretty much when my tears started flowing and they didn't let up for quite a while. I'm so glad they got to fight together like a family before it was all over. Madame Yu was fucking amazing. I still miss her...all versions of her.

Ep12: ok, apologies to live action Wen Qing, but after seeing the donghua version of her make her first appearance, I gotta say, all the time they spent in the drama developing her character felt like a waste now because this Wen Qing made so much more of an impression in the short minutes she was on screen than drama Wen Qing ever was able to for the most part. I think Team CQL did her character a huge injustice by completely watering her down in the drama. It's a shame too cuz I think Meng Ziyi, the actress portraying her, totally could have pulled off a tough AF performance and made all of us love her as much as we did her novel counterpart. Drama Wen Qing was sweet and sympathetic and you felt bad for her, but novel and donghua Wen Qing is someone who demanded your respect and could've easily lead a sect of her own cuz she's so capable and awesome. I wish The Untamed kept this version of her, even if it meant we wouldn't have met her until after the fall of Yunmeng Jiang sect.

Ep13: Lan Zhan being worried about Wei Ying during his missing period (while he was dumped into Burial Mounds by Wen Chao). I really appreciated the addition of this moment where he finds WWX's sword charm and we can see he's really worried about him. So sweet.

Ep15: the way our beloved Yiling Patriarch first appears is different from the live action and novel, but I pretty much love all the versions. All of them were sexy as hell and made my knees go weak.

Ep15: And my heart still hurt for this lovesick puppy in all the versions when he got rejected by Wei Ying (altho Jiang Cheng technically did the rejecting here on his bro's behalf). His quivering lips were an especially good touch. Poor baby.

When they jumped back to the present right after Wei Ying's Yiling Patriarch made his debut, I was actually disappointed. Kinda made me appreciate the live action's chronological order more cuz that mechanism actually drove me a little crazy at times while I was reading the novel.

I am ready for the second season now...where more pain awaits. I'm a little glad I'm back to waiting for episodes to be released so at least the heartache can be doled out in smaller doses. Still unbearable, but a bit more manageable.

I take back my ealier point. FUCK dfqc for kidnapping xlh and intimidating her and exerting power over her and terrifying her. fuck him!!! we are sliding BACKWARDS in development. and I don’t think I like a romance with him after this again. so creepy how he keeps touching her and manhandling her against her wishes. and at this point he’s still just in it to keep himself alive, at least ostensibly

also, this isn’t a critique of the character, but rather the writing - she is so infantilized! I noticed just now that she literally looks and sounds like a child when she cries. can she have some dignity, maybe? some maturity? so whiny, I can’t stand it. and it’s just her! lof and cql and no other cdrama I’ve seen has babified it’s female characters this badly, ESPECIALLY not the lead women. it’s nice to see a plain non-combatant get a fun little wish-fulfillment romance but at a certain point it starts to feel insulting. like, this is the woman you decided will be your lead character? this is how she acts? it’s exhausting

The Untamed costumes, 2/?

I am going to skip the post-resurrection outfits from episodes 1 and 2 for now and jump into the flashback. So:

Wei Wuxian's outfits 2: The dark blue patterned robe (episodes 2-3 and 8-9)

This is the outfit Wei Wuxian wears when he, Jiang Cheng and Jiang Yanli arrive in Caiyi Town at the end of episode 2, until they arrive in the Cloud Recesses in episode 3. And he wears this again during his Jin Iron Trip with Lan Wangji in episodes 8 and 9, until they arrive in Yueyang.

The outfit seems to have just two layers:

The gorgeous red inner robe (here's a separate post on the red undergarments)

The dark blue, patterned outer robe

The sleeves are narrow, typical for Wei Wuxian, and he wears a matching set of studded leather arm guards and belt. The black decorative panels of the outer robe match these nicely.

The red inner robe seems to be pleated.

And the arm guards come with matching red lacings (nice!).

The outer robe has a pattern resembling some kind of... lizard skin (crocodile skin)?

And it is split both at the back and the sides to better display the inner robe (a fact which is greatly approved).

A little further observation to finish this: the neckline of the outer robe is untrimmed to begin with.

Right? But when Wei Wuxian emerges from the woods where he and Lan Wangji have been fighting the flying chains and the Wen dire owl (ep9), the robe has gained a dark blue trimming:

Or is that an additional layer? Did he get cold after the fight and his injury? Did the forest trip involve some stripping? Did Lan Wangji help?! All these important questions and no answers!
