ep2 is still the stage in watching where it's still kind of bad and im slightly embarrassed to have read so much heartfelt and well-written fanfic for it but I KNOW it gets really good I know it does

It's the fact that whoever wrote cql ep3 probably interpreted xiyao exactly as we did, and was unironically going for the romantic first meeting, the finding the same wavelength instantly, the lxc making an unhinged move at this relative stranger cause he likes him -- that whole sentiment, but in a way that still stays within the bounds of censure. For example it happens in front of a class full of people. Not in mdzs u-uh. Without a massive, titled audience, I dare not put into words the outcome. Showing yunmeng in any form that makes sense would be simply too gay to pass customs.
I know xiyao did not literally meet in Yunping (it's likely that meng yao worked somewhere else as a bookkeeper after his mom died, etc.) but let's use Yunping as shorthand for "xiyao in hiding somewhere in yunmeng", anyway.
Point is: oh my god, the xiyao cottagecore period has all of the best tropes. a secret time away from the world, just the two of them, societal differences suspended while in hiding, there was only one bed, wound tending, secret identities, prince thrown among commoners, nicknames, first times, first love, etc.
for months
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Look at this whole wartime romance blossoming quietly in a single flashback, a period of time that we only heard about from other people in the previous versions of the story, that we never saw until the donghua, but that apparently changed both of their lives so completely that lxc came out of it with pretty enlightened takes on grey morality and the nickname "a-yao" on his lips. Incredible. unparalleled. blessed content. whenever I think about it I want to bite my fist.

A hotpot of candies EP3-4
Part 2 of the candies in “Let’s hotpot together”. No need for more introduction, isn’t it? Let’s get into it.
Part 1: EP 1-2.
Disclaimer: fake fake fake.
1. Invisibility
They were asked: “What superpower would you like to have?”
Invisibility. [Why?] I’m not free, I don’t have any freedom right now. If I had a invisibility power, I could go and do whatever I wanted. I could go out and have fun, I could be out in the streets without a face mask.
This is not exactly a candy (and it’s quite sad, really, I’m sorry for all the sad content in these posts). Both gg and dd have said that if they could have any superpower, they’d like invisibility, to go out in the streets and do whatever they wanted. Gg was saying this since 2019, in one of their interviews for CQL (that time dd said teletransportation).
It looks quite obvious to me that they have discussed about this. It’s really not difficult, they face a lot of problems because they can’t go out without being recognised on the spot.
2. The colours
Tumblr media
Most likely a coincidence, but a cute one. A cartoon one of the dancers drew of him is wearing the 3 bjyx colours. Maybe inspired by dd’s panther?
3. Sleep
When they were asked what they do when they’re stressed, dd said that he usually forgets quickly (yes, I’ve seen the type of things you forget, dd, and now I never trust you when you say that you came out of fight scenes uninjured), but that if anything worries him, he sleeps it off.
It’s quite curious that gg gave the same answer in The Economist interview (the first after his radio silence from 2/27). Gg said that time that a friend had quoted a phrase to him that ended in “if worried, sleep”, and that he just slept to forget his worries. Quite curious that they have the same method. It can be a coincidence, ofc.
4. WIFI
Omg. This was like (ohnobjyx’s line of thinking):
Dd, it’s not your turn... Wait. This boy just interrupted in another host’s turn in a game just to say: “I want wifi”?
For those fans who are unaware, Wuxian in WWX’s name has the same pronuntiation as “wifi” in Chinese. So, in c-fandom, is common to refer to WWX as “wifi” (the novel’s author did as well, so it’s very widespread).
Dd demonstrated his knowledge of this fact in one of his bombology interviews (they asked him whether he knew what “wifi” meant in Internet slang, and he answered WWX).
Here are the facts. Dd interrupted ZYX’s turn to say “I want wifi”. No one else interrupts in any other turn. He knows that wifi means WWX for c-fans. I have nothing else to say.
5. “More money”
This one is... curious. I find myself jumping forth and back from “yeah” to “nah”. I’d like to know what other fans think, of course, so I’m leaving this here.
In EP 3, they celebrated dd’s birthday, as it was to be aired on August 5. The members of his team all wrote birthday’s blessings to him, among which the girl wrote “I wish you’ll earn more and more money!”. Dd made this face:
Tumblr media
So... among c-fans, a lot of fans call gg “rich gege” (有钱, yes, it’s the same as A-Yuan calling LWJ “rich gege”) because gg’s signature resembles those characters. Notice that the characters in “rich” are the same as “more money”. Some bxg think that these overly exaggerated facial expression was to conceal his original reaction to someone referring to gg on the program.
Honestly? I’m not sure. Maybe? He has never acknowledged (from what I know) that fans call gg “rich gege”, not like he does with wifi and WWX. Everything in this will remain speculation I guess. I’d like to hear what you all think, of course.
(Btw, he got the same reaction when he read “fall soon into the love river”, which is honestly hilarious.)
6. Dd’s double standards appear again
I love the beginning of EP4 because it’s just dd treating other people different to how he’d treat gg. Just judge for yourselves...
Tumblr media
Here are dd and ZYX avoiding each other.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here is dd subtly and not so subtly placing his hand on/under gg’s hand.

it's funny because i'm doing a cql rewatch and i'd just come across your post about 兄/哥 (/post/614255048891006976/if-you-happen-to-know-why-is-shixiong-the-term) when i noticed at the 15:00 minute mark of ep3 jiang cheng introduces wei wuxian as 师哥. i don't remember hearing him or anyone else use 师哥 otherwise but i thought that was cool!
(post anon is referring to)
that is cool! I hopped on baidu-zhidao real fast to see if anyone had strong opinions on the 师哥 shige vs. 师兄 shixiong divide, and what I’m generally gathering is that:
师兄 shixiong is slightly more formal than 师哥 shige
there might be a technical difference between the two based on age vs. time-spent-in-same-school. A possible explanation for a difference between the two terms is that 师兄 shixiong might refer to someone who entered the school/sect before you (but might be younger than you from an age perspective), whereas 师哥 shige refers to someone who is literally older than you
I don’t think there’s a super strong distinction between the two (at least based on my speed-reading of baidu answers), but yeah, interesting to think about!

tonyglowheart replied to your post “Thanks for reposting that guide to MDZS! I didn't know about it until...”
tbh if you don't mind skipping eps, I do kinda say a hybrid-watch/read consumption isn't bad either? bc you get the visuals to help you in - I had the hardest time getting into it cold 8) - but then you get the reveals & novel plot (the sword spirit is dumb, fight me) just gotta yeet past the whole flashback arc, ~ep3 to ep33
I mean the past stuff is cute, and gives more of the cute idyllic Youthe days you don't get from the novel, but cql also reveals this one thing quite early bc it goes thru the past stuff that imo is much higher impact when you get it revealed when the novel does
Yeah honestly, ideally, I’d probably recommend watching the first 10-15 eps of CQL/Untamed and then reading the novel before finishing the show.  When I was recced into the fandom it was recommended that you watch a few eps of the donghua before stopping and reading the novel to avoid spoilers and that’s what I did.   Though the Untamed spoilers are FAR more serious than those in season 1 of the donghua.
The novel is told out of order, with unreliable narrators/lots of rumor and hearsay, so you don’t find out the Truth of important aspects of the story until very late in the day, when it stabs you in the chest.  The show, on the other hand, tells it pretty much entirely in chronological order, outside of eps 1-2.  (It goes Ep 1-2 then FLASHBACK for eps 3-33 when it flashes forward to the “present” until the end.  The book jumps ALL AROUND with constant framing of the present.)  I stick by the framing of the novel as brilliant and sophisticated and emotionally affecting in major ways, but it’s also a bit of a slog when you’re not emotionally connected to the story already AND when it’s a less-than-perfectly effective fan translation.  There are a LOT of characters with confusing Ancient Chinese names to keep track of with a timeline jumping through time and POV.
But yeah, there’s a real level of storytelling sophistication that it loses in adaptation.  So it’s up to individual taste and what works best for you, IMO.

someone on twitter pointed out that in the novel wwx mostly flirts with girls as an ego boost and to show off so there's an argument to be made he's not even attracted to them but honestly bi wwx is everything to me im so glad it's the most popular interpretation for the show

The Untamed costumes, 2/?
I am going to skip the post-resurrection outfits from episodes 1 and 2 for now and jump into the flashback. So:
Wei Wuxian's outfits 2: The dark blue patterned robe (episodes 2-3 and 8-9)
This is the outfit Wei Wuxian wears when he, Jiang Cheng and Jiang Yanli arrive in Caiyi Town at the end of episode 2, until they arrive in the Cloud Recesses in episode 3. And he wears this again during his Jin Iron Trip with Lan Wangji in episodes 8 and 9, until they arrive in Yueyang.
The outfit seems to have just two layers:
The gorgeous red inner robe (here's a separate post on the red undergarments)
The dark blue, patterned outer robe
Tumblr media
The sleeves are narrow, typical for Wei Wuxian, and he wears a matching set of studded leather arm guards and belt. The black decorative panels of the outer robe match these nicely.
Tumblr media
The red inner robe seems to be pleated.
Tumblr media
And the arm guards come with matching red lacings (nice!).
Tumblr media
The outer robe has a pattern resembling some kind of... lizard skin (crocodile skin)?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And it is split both at the back and the sides to better display the inner robe (a fact which is greatly approved).
A little further observation to finish this: the neckline of the outer robe is untrimmed to begin with.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Right? But when Wei Wuxian emerges from the woods where he and Lan Wangji have been fighting the flying chains and the Wen dire owl (ep9), the robe has gained a dark blue trimming:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Or is that an additional layer? Did he get cold after the fight and his injury? Did the forest trip involve some stripping? Did Lan Wangji help?! All these important questions and no answers!

my mom finally started to watch cql properly. like she was on ep3 and stopped ‘cause it was boring, but i went to the living room yesterday and she was on ep11 and she was like ‘okay, this is good and wwx is a little brat and i’m loving it’ YES! a win!
still weird to hear her refer to lan zhan as ‘wwx’s friend’ but i hope she picks up the clues soon enough
