also i am so so relieved that eun chan doesn't have a "feminine" makeover so that she's allowed to be with her coffee prince (well, i have five episodes left but i'm assuming if it hasn't happened yet it's not going to). she dresses and looks exactly the same as she always did, he was attracted to her then and he's attracted to her now, the only difference is he knows.

honestly i went into the show assuming it would be inevitable. but they are approaching gender roles so differently than i feared. yes, there was a big transformation/reveal with heels, dress and makeup. But crucially, it was for the wrong guy.

and she never tried to change herself. she just dressed and acted as she wanted to, and other people made assumptions. I have no objections to She's the Man and its ilk (though somehow I've never actually seen it), where someone has to disguise herself as a boy for Plot Reasons, and work at getting it right, but the way Coffee Prince does it is so much more intriguing to me and has much more interesting things to say about gender.

and yeah, i agree. it's not that i mind the same constellation of actors doing multiple series together. but if only THEY do series together?? that's kinda annoying in the long run. bc like, they're actors and as actors i wanna see them do actor things and part of that is watching how their acting is influenced by all the different colleagues they work with (whether these colleagues are male or female or any other gender)

and i really don't understand why we can't have the best of both worlds, like. it would be SO easy: have them do a series with their main cp partner every other year and then in the years in between they get to branch out and kiss other men

sometimes i cry myself to sleep at night thinking about all of the potential dynamics we're missing out on because of this. dynamics that could be so delicious to watch

but alas....

Also I actually really like this ragtag bunch of coffee princes? I usually get annoyed with the "interfering friend group" but these guys work for me. probably because they do very little actual interfering. Mostly standing and watching as the train wreck happens, but with love and worry. And because what actions they do take seem to stem from their individual characters, rather than the plot need for "interfering friends." This bit with them telling her to text Han Gyul "I love you" crystallized this for me. It's so sweet and supportive and not actually pushy since they let her do it.

I also appreciate how the coffee shop itself feels like a really working coffee shop, and they all seem to be actually working. Another detail that grounds this show. Even their "concert" was something I could totally see the hip young staff of a hip new coffee shop putting on. Just skilled enough to make it fun, but not too much to overly strain credulity.

(I personally preferred the cozy floral look of the original coffee shop, but I agree the rats and cockroaches were de trop. Plus in 2007 the concrete minimalist style was not yet overdone.)

I'm really, really sorry that happened to your friend, anon. I hope they were able to recover and get justice for what happened to them, and that you've been able to work through it too.

Thank you :) I'm not close enough with her to necessarily be privy to all her deepest feelings, but as far as I can tell, she really is fine and has been for a long time. She's a teacher and doing really well.

And yeah, I don't feel that way--like I'm looking through that filter--anymore, and a big part of that (not to overshare, but hey, maybe someone will read this and it will help them?) was getting diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder. Since I was a kid I'd felt like violence and death were always lurking, to a degree that was illogical, and then the attack on my friend made that worse because it seemed like oh, I was right to feel that way. But getting worse eventually led to a diagnosis, which has led to getting a lot better! :)

I'm really glad both you and your friend are doing better and that the diagnosis helped, anon! It's wonderful when diagnoses give us not just a vocabulary and tools for what we experience, but an understanding of ourselves and I guess, context?

Not the same exactly, but my littlest nephew has a severe speech disability which has gone through about five almost-diagnoses and multiple tests which is crazy given he's only 6-years-old. He finally got an actual diagnosis a few months ago (childhood apraxia of speech, or CAS) and while there's complicated feelings involved in knowing talking isn't going to be something that'll ever be easy for him, even just getting to understand it better as a motor disability as opposed to a cognitive one has been extremely useful in helping us to support him in using his voice.

He doesn't really understand what his diagnosis means yet (although he knows people outside of the family struggle to understand him) but it's helped get him into more specific speech therapy and, if my sister wins relocation in family court next month, there's some social groups here in Melbourne where he can hopefully be around kids who are experiencing the same disability (it's a rare one, and there ae just more kids with it in the city) and understand what he's going through as he grows up. So yeah! It's pretty cool when a diagnosis offers not just pathways forwards, but a deeper understanding of self and points of connection too.

In this thread alone I'm mocking someone for claiming that I spoke in favor of voting for Trump when that is not a statement made anywhere on this post, and your retort is to just...do it again? lol. Making up false caricatures of people who disagree with you does nothing to convince me your arguments are logical or worth engaging with.

YouTube has been giving me nonstop ads for Kamala’s campaign and not one of them has mentioned LGBT people or any group that votescolds on this site seem to think she’s fighting for. which could mean nothing.
