“Perhaps the decisions that shaped the course of history weren’t made in scenes worthy of stories and tapestries, but in ordinary places like these, driven by desperation and doubt.” Margaret Rogerson, Vespertine
We have had such great weather here in NC this week! 💜📖 And a wonderful week for reading. Today’s @owlcrate @OCthenest @words.and.whimsy Villain Lover photo challenge is A Pinch of Audacity (An Audacious Character). This week’s book mail came in just in time for Valentine’s Day, the lovely @owlcrate special edition of Vespertine. Which was one of my favorite reads of 2023. Artemisia may not be the most outgoing person, but she is audacious. As she fights for the lives of others.

Did you ever have an urge to make a #quilt that would cause your grandma to cringe? This collection of cute prints would do just that! It seems innocuous at first, but look closely at what the adorable little sea critters are doing. It would be really easy to make with the Fill-a-yard. It’s FINALLY DONE!!!
I feel like I’ve been making this quilt for years, and it’s only been since the summer.
My best friend’s cousin got married this past weekend to a lovely gal. I’ve known Austin since he was nine years old (going on forty). He’s thirty-two now and got married. My friend and I knew they deserved a big, wonderful quilt.
The top got done early in the year but sat for months before we finally got it to the long armers in September (exactly one year since the last wedding quilt we took her). I got it home, put the binding on it, then waited for the embroidered label from a friend. I had a backup person who made me two other labels. All the labels came literally days before the wedding! I was so done by that point, stressed out beyond belief about it all.
The couple, while in college at Vassar, met at Disneyland with friends. That was a few years ago and they fell in love almost right away. Both are from New York but live in California for now. I think they will come back here soon enough.
At the departure brunch the next morning, my friend and I presented the quilt to them. (The last pic is how we wrapped it, which was my vision from the start pretty much.) They loved it, and were immediately drawn to the Disney elements in it.
The fabric used is Holly Taylor’s Violet Hill. The pattern is Criss Cross by CozyQuilts. There are two accent fabrics, one is Moda’s Arboretum metallics. I forget the other. I don’t know the name of the backing. The quilting is a dragonfly pantograph which felt more than right for a garden theme quilt. The quilt measures 96″x96″ which is 8′x8′! By far, the largest quilt I’ve ever made and will ever make! I was able to use a 108″ on the back which saved a lot of time, fabric, and material.
I’m proud of how it turned out, and I’m glad they loved it. I’m also glad it’s out of this house forever.

When I saw Donna Jordan do Nine Sisters from CozyQuilts, I knew I had to do it. Eventually.
Fast forward two years later and a jelly roll that is taunting me from the shelf, and here I go. It was a very easy pattern, actually. It’s all half-square triangles, and solid squares.
I was so tired of black or white backgrounds, so I set out to JoAnn to get some Navy fabric. I had a vision! But, they were out of Navy. So, I found this royal blue with a bit of a pattern on it. Almost like a grunge or something, but not quite. I bought five yards of it and I’m glad I did! I had just enough. I also chose blue because the fabric - Scarlet’s Garden - can easily read holiday, and it’s not holiday at all. The blue negated that, I believe.
The pattern, because of so much negative space, called for well over three yards of background. There are sixteen squares that are 8.5″ of just background. But there are four sets of two that are side by side, so I just cut those areas as rectangles. Less seams and sewing.
I did have some stripped jelly roll strips left over so I divided them equally and put them in the binding right in the center of each side where all that negative space is located. It’s a cute stretch of color.
The backing is just black fabric. I also incorporated some pink fabric with a green paisley on it. My friend thought I was nuts, but I knew it’d work. I did have my doubt part of the way into it, but I was too far to stop. This was also one of the first times I used starch. It’s a game changer! Just some Niagara Luxe works, but I used the Original, too. The quilting is a blue thread from Gutermann that matches the blue, and I did a loopy meander. It’s about 68″ square and I think it’s just cute as anything.
I even quilted my name into it. It’s near the top, but it’s upside down in the pic.

Finished her today. It’s about 53x63″. It’s CozyQuilts Cross My Heart pattern. The fabric is a partial (leftover) jelly roll from Kaffe Fassett. The border is from QT Fabrics. There’s a couple of others in there, too.
The back is a light blue ultra soft cotton sheet from Target. The quilting thread is a variegated black/white/gray. The thread on the back is a variegated blue. I kept the quilting simple, doing simple straight light. There are lines through and on either side of the X-pattern squares, And horizontal and vertical lines through the hearts. There is a decorative stitch in the border, too.
I’ve done this pattern before with autumnal colors.
I sent it to a friend in California, as a surprise.
