In Defense of Fluffy Bunnies, or Witchcraft in Times of Burnout
At the very end of 2023, I used my Christmas bonus from work to buy myself a tarot deck I never would have purchased six months earlier.
This deck was from a creator whose work I had really enjoyed in the past, but when I had looked at it earlier in the year, I'd had concerns that it was softening the meaning of some of the more "difficult" cards in the tarot. For example, The Hanged Man is replaced with "The Patient Witch" and Death is replaced with "The Broom." I'd had concerns that replacing these cards, which are traditionally associated with more dire or upsetting readings, meant the creator was trying to whitewash tarot into something cute and fluffy, sacrificing a lot of its depth in the process.
The deck is The Cozy Witch Tarot by Amanda Lovelace, and I'm so glad I gave it a try. This deck has an incredibly kind and gentle feel, but it is absolutely capable of giving serious readings. The depth of the tarot hasn't been compromised at all by Lovelace's changes, and her version's greater emphasis on agency and personal empowerment is exactly what I need in my practice right now. I use this deck to read for myself almost every day.
So what changed? How did I do a complete 180 in my thoughts on this deck in only a few months?
I've always been very opposed to "love and light" or "fluffy bunny" witchcraft. For those who aren't familiar, these are both terms used online (usually negatively) to describe witches who only do "light" or positive magic. According to the Witchipedia, "Generally, the 'fluffy bunnies' have based their practice on only the most delightful aspects of their spiritual path or romanticized, fictional Hollywood or literary accounts of witchcraft or Wicca." From what I can tell, this term came out of Wiccan Internet forums in the 1990s, and it refers to someone who dons the aesthetics and mythology of Wicca or witchcraft without actually engaging critically with magic theory. Fluffy bunnies also tend to focus on feel-good magic, at least according to stereotypes.
Similarly, "love and light" witches are known for only focusing on the lighthearted side of witchcraft. In an opinion article for The Wild Hunt, Storm Faerywolf writes that, "On the surface it seems harmless enough: a philosophy of love, kindness, non-violence, and a concerted practice of positivity." This type of witchcraft is very closely tied to the "spiritual but not religious" movement and borrows a lot of concepts from New Age spirituality, like crystal healing, the Law of Attraction, and chakras. While fluffy bunnies are very much a product of the 1990s, love and light witches are very much a product of the New Age boom of the 2010s.
I've been very vocal about my dislike for both of these types of witchcraft on this blog in the past, and I still 100% agree with Storm Faerywolf, who says in that same article: "But to assert that pain, and fear, and even anger are somehow less important than our joy, our courage, and even our love, is to do a grave disservice to our collective mental and spiritual health... groups that embrace this mode of thinking have effectively ensured that they can mutually avoid anything that might challenge their cultish mindset. Angry over injustice? You’re just living in a lower vibration. Afraid of contracting a deadly virus? You just don’t trust Jesus enough."
I think accepting and working with challenging emotions is an important part of what it means to be a witch. Spiritual bypassing and cries of "good vibes only" do more harm than good. But for a while I got so caught up in rejecting anything even remotely fluffy or love-and-lightish that I ended up with a magical practice that, to be honest, kind of made me miserable. And I don't think I'm the only one.
I spent a lot of 2022 and 2023 wrestling with injustice, both in my spiritual practice and in my personal and professional life. My practice is inspired by witches like Starhawk and Christy C. Road, and politics play a key role. Most of the spells I did in 2023 fall into the category of justice magic, including breaking family curses and hexing rapists. At the same time, I was working a series of direct services jobs that saw me working closely with homeless teenagers, domestic violence victims, and people battling addiction, just to name a few. And that's not even getting into my personal life and recovery as a queer, disabled survivor of abuse.
And let me tell you: By the end of 2023, I was fucking exhausted. I was beyond burnout. And I didn't even want to do magic anymore, because magic had become just another part of my life where I had to face the injustice and harm happening in the world around me.
I was in desperate need of some fluffiness, some love and light. And that was when I bought the Amanda Lovelace tarot deck.
I knew something had to change. In my burnout, I desperately needed to be tenderly cared for. I needed my spiritual practice to be a source of peace and comfort, not a drain on my energy. I needed to get out of the dark for a bit so I could remember how to see the stars.
What I've realized in the last few months is that yes, anger, pain, and fear are important in a balanced magical practice and a balanced life -- but joy, love, and comfort are equally important. And if you spend a lot of time in one part of your life dealing with pain and fear (like I do in my day job), focusing on love and healing in your witchcraft can help keep things balanced.
"Comfort" and "care" are definitely the keywords for my magical practice right now, and that means my magic looks a lot more fluffy than it has in the past. And that's a good thing.

my dnp tarot:
ok! i own five tarot decks so I had to jump on the dnp tarot train. i did a one card pull for each deck, and these are in the order I pulled them in.
*(the card descriptions I include come straight from the explanations book from their respective decks)
Two of Pentacles (Buffy Tarot Deck - same one Phil now has a copy of thanks to 'viewers buy me gifts' vid!): Slow down. Yes, you have tons of responsibilities, but you won't get anything at this rate.
Knight of Wands (Grunge Tarot Deck): At first the knight appears to be a rather strange character, but we discover his eccentricity derives from his uniquely original vision. He doesn't give up hope, even when all seems lost. He repeats to himself "I am still alive."
Six of Cups: (The Cosmic Slumber Tarot Deck): Reflection and building. Look back upon the happiness you have felt, and honor this past by living the present to the fullest.
Eight of Wands: (Cozy Witch Tarot): Expect things to start progressing rather quickly. Light a fire under your cauldron and go, go, go!
The Empress: (Modern Witch Tarot Deck): Love is everything. This goddess is truly connected to the world and others through passion and pure emotions.
yall!!!!!! I could not and would not lie to you! I really pulled the empress card, and it really was the last card pulled in my little five-card spread -- which felt particularly significant to me!

Hi Kleo Darling,
Lemme in!!!! Ahehehehehe~
Please lemme participate!! Elle here, big 3 is all fire, no chill~
Can you please pull one card for me in your new ask game with my FS in mind?
Hello!
Thank you so much for participating in my tiny game! 💖
Let's do this!
Question: Secret cuddle time with your lover (current or future) when you are having a movie night with friends around
Deck: Cozy Witch Tarot Deck by Amanda Lovelace
Card: Queen of Pentacles
Oh dear! I know you wanted more vanilla but girl, you can have it all! Your lover worships you as the goddess you are and the moment they sense you are open to some cuddle time with them, they are not stopping until you slap their hands. But will you? You deserve the whole of the couch with your lover being your bigger spoon behind you. Your friends can sit on chairs or on the floor but you, their goddess, will lie comfortably on the softest pillow and covered with warm blanket while your lover starts to rub you all over, warming you up, awakening your skin and nerve endings till you become hyper sensitive to their touch, buzzing with desire and your bones melting. And your lover is still just stroking your body lazily and whispering comforting words to your ear, kissing your neck sweetly. You might be the one hinting how you feel and your lover acts all surprised when they reach in between your legs and can feel how wet you have become. However, you are their deity, you deserve to be worshipped and pleasured. They guide your leg up and hooking it on their hip for better access and tease you with their fingers for a long time, edging you and praising you for being so responsive and sensitive to their touch. When you are trembling and completely lost track of the movie, their skilled fingers just push you over the edge while they kiss you deeply to muffle your moans.

THEME: Witches
This week's games are for everyone who has ever wanted to cast spells, brew tea, and participate in a Coven. Here are some Witch games!
This Night on the Rooftops, by anxiousmimicrpgs
This is a game about gazing out over the smokestacks after dark, with the wind in your hair and a friend at your side and a thousand lights of progress on the streets below.
This Night on the Rooftops is a collaborative storytelling game for 2-5 players about friendship, growing up, and revolution. You will play members of a gang of children in The City, a fantastic world of industry and dying magic, where witches labour alongside factory-workers to make ends meet.
If you are somewhat familiar with Belonging Outside Belonging games (also known as No Dice, No Masters), picking up this game should be pretty simple. It doesn’t use dice, and it doesn’t use a GM, so there’s less pressure on any one player, and you don’t have to scramble for play materials. Each player will get a playbook that reflects your character’s personal situation and struggle in a world that is tough and tiring. If you like the idea of witches making ends meet in an industrial city, this is worth checking out.
You can also check out their game Haven, another Belonging Outside Belonging game about witches finding community together in a dark forest, away from the rest of the world.
Children of Midnight: Coven, by Balsamic Moon Games Collective
It's the not-too-distant future and you live on the cusp of the old world and the new world. Your magical powers are wyld and unregistered. You can't rely on the electronic infrastructure of the world economy or interact with bots on the street because of the dangerous reactions electronics have to your unbound abilities. Your family may have even cut ties with you to prevent retribution from The Order or its private witch-hunting army, The Redwatch.
Despite the challenges, you have a familiar who is always looking out for you and a coven of other wyld witches you can always turn to. With your coven's abilities and a powerful patron spirit you fight to take back power from the elites; make the world better for yourself and your coven-mates, and for the next generation of witches.
Children of Midnight, is a Forged in the Dark game about witchcraft, urban horror, and near-futuristic technology. It’s currently in production, with a Quickstart option if you want to try it out before putting your money down for the full thing. The Forged in the Dark system is great for playing a big Faction game, where every action from your coven will make waves in the larger political landscape of New York.
The Coven at the End of the Lane, by angrynerdgirl
You've always wondered what was just beyond the doors of the spooky house at the end of the block. Now, make it your very own.
Choose your witch archetype. Choose a familiar. Create your home.
The Coven at the End of the Lane is a gm-less game that uses a tarot deck and a number of 6-sided dice. The players will each have personal goals and special abilities that they can use throughout play, as well as unique magic and a signature spell. If you would like to have a familiar, there are rules for using them as well! This game is also a cozy game, with generally low stakes and a House that you can always return to for safety. If you like the magic and mystery of witches, and want to evoke that same feeling at the table, this might be a neat little game for you.
Witch’s Brew, by C.R. Legge
You are a coven of witches, meeting from across the region to discuss their plans for the next few months. You want to make sure things are working towards your goals as much as possible. This happens in an almost secret fashion under the guise of conversation over tea. Each witch will attempt to guide the selection of the other’s upcoming projects to further their own goals and gain the most influence in the coming months.
The selection process is done over a simple cup of tea that, to others, would look like a quiet conversation. Each Witch votes by how many sips they take. The players each have a secret goal that these projects might help along. Make sure you vote for the projects that you think will help your goals. There are multiple types of witches the players can be, ranging from a village witch to a mystic advisor or a practiced healer.
The setting is something that must be decided by the group prior to play. Is this a fantastical realm? A modern town? Or a futuristic city of some sort? This is also a social deduction game: your players will be working out how to complete their goals and avoid suspicion. This is a great game for folks who enjoy social roleplaying, tea, and diving into a role.
see the forest for the trees, by apri (smarticot)
see the forest for the trees (idiom); to discern an overall pattern from a mass of detail; to see the big picture, or the broader, more general situation.
❝see the forest for the trees❞ is a GM-less RPG (rule set) for 1+ witch(es), working to combat problems with magic. the players are a coven of witches, or the player is different aspects of an all powerful witch. you will be using your innate magic and the tools at your disposal, to rid the land and the common folk of their issues. To play, you will need some dice (d20, d10, d4), something to record your tally marks, and a candle for each witch.
The design for this game is simple and unassuming, with a simple layout that makes it easy to follow (and understand) the rules. See the forest for the trees is designed for group or solo play, and outlines a different setup for each kind of play. Your characters will gather materials, diagnose problems, cast spells, and help each-other come up with solutions for problems that will plague the town that you call home. If you want a beautiful, easy-to-read game with a cozy feel, this is the game for you.
Swamp Troll Witches, by Cats Have No Lord
Be a troll witch! Live in a swamp! Solve problems! Brew potions! Relax with a hot bath! Live your best troll witch life!
Swamp Troll Witch(es) is a GM-less tabletop roleplaying game for solo journaling, epistolary play, or small group play based on the Motif framework.
The game focuses on the daily lives of the troll witches, searching the swamp for potion ingredients, solving problems to collect those ingredients, brewing potions, and relaxing at the end of the day to recover from the work. At the end of the week, visit the strange night market to sell all of the potions from the week. The game features simple, flexible, narrative-driven mechanics with non-binary success and a simple oracle for answering questions.
There are five stages to the game, with different rules depending on each stage. The mechanics work off of 3d6s, with each dice answering each part of a question you ask before you roll. The theme is based off of the trolls of Nordic mythology. It focuses on the small parts of a witch’s daily life, and provided prompt tables to help you when you’re not sure what the next part of the story will be. If you like a game that feels cozy, and you can play either solo or with a group - even if the group is separated by distance and time zones - then you should check this one out.
Wise Women, by Alessandra Brokman.
Wise Women is tabletop roleplaying game in which the players take on the roles of witches living in a remote village, where life is difficult and people often fall prey to supernatural creatures. The witches have the ability to use magical properties of plants to protect their community and help it prosper, but their skills are viewed with suspicion and prejudice. After all, magic is another supernatural force and the same plants that can heal, can also be used to cause harm.
This game is rooted in Polish folklore, and so the plants and creatures found in the book are all of Slavic origin. This game takes place in pre-industrial Europe: no cellphones or electric tea kettles to be found here. Your witches are likely to face groups and powers that fear and suspect them of dangerous things while they attempt to protect (and help) their neighbours.
Wise Women is Powered by the Apocalypse, which means that it prioritizes story and relies on the tried-and-true 2d6 mechanic. Your story will evolve naturally, as your characters develop ties with each-other and interact with the backstories you fill out together. If you enjoy mechanics that push the narrative forward, and conversations about what it means to be a woman with the power to help her community, I recommend that you check this game out.

Shay's 2023 Tarot Purchase Round-Up
Unfortunately, I don't have time for a huge review post this year, but here are my top 10 favorite tarot decks that I purchased this year!
10. Dreams Within Dreams Tarot
- This was a Kickstarter I backed last year. The art is beautiful and the artist stated that they were inspired by their favorite anime growing up in the late 90s and early 2000s. The only reason this deck isn't higher on the list is because I found that the whiplash between some cards being fan art and some being original art was too much for me to really connect with it.
Where to buy: Kickstarter exclusive, but still available in various Etsy shops
9. Stars Lighting Up the Night Tarot
- This deck came out of nowhere and instantly became a favorite. I love the night scenes and the multiple versions of some cards so you can customize the deck. It also has the linen card texture I love! I purchased the limited edition version just to get that texture!
Where to buy:
8. Titanic Tarot: Risen Spirits (Titanic Tarot 2nd Edition)
- This version massively improves on the first (which I already loved) by removing the borders and including updated art for the pip cards that better represents the full story of the passengers of the Titanic, including before the voyage and after.
Where to buy: Mostly out of stock, but still available at some Etsy shops and online magic supply stores
7. Sleepwalker Tarot
- I ended up getting the mini because it was all that was left, but I wish I had the full size. The art is so beautiful and Iove how calming the subjects are with their eyes closed. Also, I found the full size and will definitely be purchasing!
Where to buy:
6. Witch Sister Tarot
- I waited TWO YEARS for this tarot and the art alone was worth it. I love the artist's previous deck, and stumbled on some of the art for this one on Etsy while looking for devotional items for selkie and for the Cailleach. It's finally out! The only downside is that it's a Llewellyn deck and has their usual thin cardstock.
Where to buy:
5. Shadowscape Tarot
- An oldie but a goodie. I finally got this after a few years of eyeing it, and it's definitely a great choice for being a mass market deck. Stephanie Pui-Mun Law's art is beautiful. Reminds me of old Amy Brown paintings, but far better executed.
Where to buy:
4. Starspinner Tarot
- I ADORE the art for this deck. It reminds me somewhat of CLAMP art. The art is also inclusive and bright and the deck has four different lovers cards so you can have whatever flavor you wish! This one is also mass market but great quality.
Where to buy:
3. Cozy Witch Tarot
- Of course I expected this deck to be cozy, but I was surprised with just how much I like the whole package. The card subjects are diverse not only in skin color, but in body type as well, which really stood out and made this deck one that I came back to often. The only downside is that the cards are slightly larger than standard size, so they can be difficult to handle at times.
Where to buy:
2. Monsoon Tarot
- This deck honestly has the most beautiful art of any deck I own. I'm always discovering new details in the cards and they range from cozy to dreamlike to grotesque in all the right ways. The cardstock also has that linen/playing card texture over them which makes shuffling a breeze. I use this less to read and more to just wander through and look at.
Where to buy:
1. Spirit Keeper Tarot
This one is hard to get a hold of, but so worth it. I happened to check in while the author still had some of the current edition left in stock after pre-orders on her website and managed to snag one. I LOVE working with this deck. The art is great, but the companion book is really what makes this deck incredible. The book goes over a lot of the inspiration behind each card and the symbolism. The author is of Chinese descent, so she has tied both western and eastern concepts to each card, which she lays out in the book. This has been the main deck I have read with since I got it. S tier deck.
Where to buy:

Exploring the Magical Bookshops of Paris 📚🔮
Paris is known for its charming bookshops and literary culture, but did you know that the city is also home to some truly magical bookstores? From occult tomes to spell books to tarot decks, these bookshops are a must-visit for any witch traveling to the City of Love.
One of my favorite bookshops is La Magie du Livre, located in the heart of the Marais district. This cozy store is filled with occult books, tarot decks, and other magical supplies. The staff is always friendly and knowledgeable, and there's often a tarot reader on hand for readings.
Another great bookshop is Le Bûcher de la Reine, which specializes in rare and hard-to-find magical texts. The store is small and intimate, and browsing its shelves is like stepping into a hidden corner of the magical world.
And of course, no trip to Paris would be complete without a visit to Shakespeare and Company, the iconic bookstore located on the Seine. While not specifically a magical bookshop, Shakespeare and Company has a long history of attracting literary and artistic types, and it's always a pleasure to browse its shelves and see what treasures I can find.
So if you're a witch visiting Paris, make sure to add these magical bookshops to your itinerary. You never know what hidden knowledge you might discover! 📚🔮

It's a perfect night to feel out reading with The Cozy Witch tarot deck for the first time: I have matching oracle cards on stand-by, it's my usual weekday for communing with my cosiest deities, my cheesecake spell-baby is quietly cooling next to me, my chime candle is burning down next to the cute, little spell bottle it's powering, the house smells softly of roses from the incense smoldering just out of frame, and the patio door is open to let in the sound of a light rainfall. I should make a cup of hot chocolate. 🩷
