September 15th is St Mirren/Mirrin Day the patron saint of Paisley.

Saint Mirin or Mirren, was a Catholic monk and missionary from Ireland and is also known as Mirren of Benchor (now called Bangor), Merinus, Merryn and Meadhrán are other spellings of the name.

The patron saint of the town Paisley, he was the founder of a religious community which grew to become Paisley Abbey. The shrine of this saint in the abbey became a centre of pilgrimage.  Much of what is known about Mirin is difficult to separate from fable, however it is believed that he was of noble Irish birth.

Legend has it that he went on a mission to seek out the King of Ireland in a quest to gain permission to spread his faith through his kingdom,, bt the King refused to see him.

Mirin, thus slighted, was said to have prayed to God that the king might feel his wife’s labour pangs, her time being near. The legend continues that, just as St Mirin had prayed, the king fell ill and roared in pain for three days and nights. In desperation the king sought out Mirin and granted him all he wished, including the right to go out and preach the Gospel to the men of his camp. In response to these concessions St Mirin prayed on his behalf and he was freed from his pain.

Thereafter he was appointed to the west of Scotland and, after a long and difficult journey, arrived where the town of Paisley now stands. He preached and worked many miracles beside the banks of the Mirin burn, converting many to Christianity and set up his first church at Seedhill, to this day still a populous part of the town , in the Parish that bears his name,  St Mirin’s Croft.

In various charters and Papal Bulls Mirin is referred to as The glorious confessor, Saint Mirin. His image was engraved on the seal of the Abbey, depicting him in the vestments of a bishop. Around the seal was inscribed the prayer O Mirin, pray for your servants. In King James IV’s Charter of 1488 raising Paisley to the status of burgh of barony, one of the reasons cited was “the singular respect we have for the glorious confessor, Saint Mirin”.

There is a chapel within Paisley Abbey, dedicated to Mirin containing a sculptured stone frieze depicting the life of the saint. The R C St Mirin’s Cathedral is also named in his honour. St Mirren F.C., in Paisley, is named after him. The St Mirin Burn flows into the White Cart Water close to the town centre. He is also commemorated by St Mirren Street which links Paisley Cross to Causeyside Street.

Further afield the island of Inchmurrin (i.e. Mirin’s Island) in Loch Lomond and a farm called Knockmurran (i.e. Mirin’s Hill) near Coylton in Ayrshire are named after him. St Mirin’s Well can be found near Kilsyth in Stirlingshire.

A bronze statue, as senen in the pic, by Norman Galbraith was unveiled on the saint’s day, 15th September 2007, by  the Provost of Renfrewshire Councillor Celia Lawson.

Obviously the weather isn't fantastic but it'll work. I’ll shoot the Palace theatre from various viewpoints including onto of the Kilmarnock Bus Station pictured bottom left of that slide, this will allow me a higher viewpoint of the building. Also a slightly cloudy night would work well for that shoot as it would allow me to add some tonal value to the sky and create added visual interest in the image as opposed to a plain black one.

Evaluation of Who Am I? Project

 For the location portion of this brief, I chose to shoot in one of the two graveyards located at the bottom of my road – Old Coylton Cemetery. I chose this location as I spent a large portion of my childhood here and have continued to see this as my ‘safe place’ into my adult life. I go here often when I need to think about something, and it is the first place I ever remember feeling connected to, or that I feel at peace. I recognise that some might see this as slightly morbid, but I just can’t describe the feeling of calm and serenity I experience here.

On the day of shooting, the sky was a dull grey and very overcast. I had to use the gradient tool in Photoshop to bring out the detail in the clouds, which was new for me. I don’t have that much experience using Photoshop, which I feel you can see from my images. I need to work on my digital editing skills in the next unit.

 With the self-portrait image, I had so many ideas but struggled with the technological side of the shoot. I downloaded many remote trigger apps to my phone and was unable to connect them to my camera, meaning I had to find a way to push the button without it being obvious in my self portrait. I chose to face away from the camera, as I feel that this was the best way to express my true self. I feel like I am always trying to hide who I am, almost afraid of my own personality. So I chose to mirror this fear by showing only my back, still hiding my face and therefore myself. I chose not to wear clothes to symbolise the vulnerability I feel when expressing myself.

If I were to reshoot this portion of the brief, I would further experiment with some of the other ideas I came up with but couldn’t try due to the time restrictions caused by the technicality difficulties. I wanted to explore different ways of expressing myself – hiding under netting, a close up image of scars and tattoos on my body, using bandages and even smoke pellets.

 I was more than happy with the way my object shoot turned out. I bought a cheap pop-up studio set up on amazon, but it kept folding in on itself as it was too heavy to hold itself up. I got a great light from it though and decided to keep trying. I shot a range of objects from my collection of Harry Potter memorabilia which I have collected since I was a child absolutely obsessed. The image I chose from this shoot is a close up of the pages of my favourite of the books – The Prisoner of Azkaban. I feel that although the image itself feels slightly cliché, it represents what meant the most to me about my collection – the books which resonated with me so much as a child.

I don’t think I would actually redo this shoot, but if anything I would consider using another image from it. I feel like I could have made the composition more complex as it is very simple, and I don’t feel that I challenged myself enough during it.
