Lindelof's Watchmen?

I have very mixed feelings on it. I think it had extremely confused ideas about police and policing, power and its proper distribution, and failed to commit to its initial apparent skepticism on those topics in a satisfying way.

That said, I think that This Extraordinary Being provided an interesting and potentially very important counterweight to the original text. The superhero community in the original Watchmen was deliberately monoracial, white or white passing, because a major theme of the book is about the paradox of living out a rebellious cowboy ubermensch fantasy that's nonetheless functionally dependent on widespread tacit societal approval of your vigilante violence in order to remain sustainable. Let's run through the lineup of the Minutemen, excluding the cypher that is Hooded Justice- we've got a star athlete, a millionaire playboy, a former marine, a showgirl, a thug-turned soldier, a cop, a European heiress. The book presents superherosim as a gratuitous fantasy, carried out by people with sufficient institutional backing that they had other options.

But the thing about condemning "vigilante violence" is that sort of by definition, you can only really do so from an implicit position of faith in legitimate channels- there has to be something you can direct the would-be vigilante towards instead. Watchmen answers this by claiming it's a moot point, exclusively positioning superheroes as people integrated with and protected by the system, even if what that integration looks like in practice changes over the forty-year span of the timeline. This Extraordinary Being retorts, alright, smartass, what if you're not protected by the system, what if the system wears on its sleeve the extent to which it doesn't care about you and everyone who looks like you. You bring in a "vigilante" who's a black survivor of a race massacre in the 1930s- a man who tried to go through your legitimate channels and got stonewalled at every turn- and it suddenly becomes extremely difficult to plausibly portray the superheroic impulse as universally, irredeemably gratuitous. Very abruptly, you're brought back face to face with the actual fundamental appeal of the superhero genre- the idea of a figure who can cut the gordian knot when evil has choked out the halls of power so thoroughly that the idea of legality becomes a bad joke. Not that he really successfully cuts the knot, mind- this is still a bitter deconstruction. The scene where Will massacres the cyclops cell and burns their warehouse to the ground isn't precisely a framed as a triumphant beat. But it's an act of violence that nonetheless invites the question of what, at this point, you think that he ought to be doing in response to Cyclops, if not this.

Finally posting my feelings on season 3 of X-Men: TAS. Ughhh.

Episode 1 & 2: Out of the Past

Looooove Gambit and Jubilee’s continued sibling relationship. 

Yuriko: “You killed my father!” Logan: “I didn’t!” Yuriko: “I’m gonna pretend I didn’t hear that.”

Don’t got much else to say other than ugh this leads into the space shenanigans and I haaaaate that. 

Episode 3, 4, 5, 6, 7: The Phoenix Saga

This saga is a drag but that doesn’t mean I didn’t get emotional when Jean and Scott parted. Seriously, when they kissed?? And Jean’s hair lit up like it was aflame? Fucking sexy as hell can I be them? These two are romance incarnate. 

Episode 8: No Mutant is an Island

Scott is so fucking done and I love that for him. He deserves a chance to go apeshit. Says he’s sick of playing “den mother”??? Oh my god. Speaking truth to power. Especially since Logan’s absence clearly marks that he’s already gone off to sulk, Scott deserves some sulk time for himself. 

THE ORPHANAGE. RUSTY!!! RUSTY COLLINS!! My darling Russell. 

“He’s just not used to the loving discipline a boy his age needs.” Kill this pervert. “After only two days I already love you like a son.” SCOTT KILL THIS PERVERT!!

Killgrave’s using these fucking kids as a scapegoat and the crimes they’re blamed for in his stead are what keep them from getting the help they need. I fucking hate this cunt. 

THEY DUMPED SCOTT IN THE POOL??? DOG?? What are y’all gonna do when a man is found drowned in your pool? Say “whoops guess he couldn't swim”??

I don’t like this Sarah chick. I’m sorry but like Killgrave is the most suspect guy ever, and she endangered the lives and futures of those children because “no one else would take them”. All that bullshit about her seeing the mutant kids as family? Girl, you got rid of them. She’s just gonna sell them to the highest bidder again because that’s what she did last time. 

I don't like that the message is "acceptance and tolerance is earned not forced" no, tolerance is NOT earned. Under no circumstances should a child be forced to EARN the right to live. Killgrave is wrong because he's a human trafficker using children to commit crimes. And obv his plan to groom the kids to become politicians would have never worked because his actions have gotten the kids in trouble with the authorities before, meaning they are distrusted by society because of HIM.

Episode 9: Obsession

I’m just gonna take a wild guess and say the Ming Dynasty scroll was planted to lure Archangel in. 

Warren is a fucking prick. Worthington is a dumb cunt and I hate him. “Deep down, he is still Warren Worthington!” Well, Warren Worthington is a bit of an angsty prick, so that ain’t saying much Rogue. Rogue and her sympathy for bitter blue bastards is gonna be her downfall. 

“Xavier was right, it is sentient! We can speak to it!” Uhh… or the ship just has Siri, McCoy. 

“Ship, you are a work of art.” “Thank you, Henry McCoy. You have no idea what a pleasure it is to interface with someone who appreciates the subtleties of my programming.”  Okay damn. I stand corrected. And Hank is about to wine and dine a ship. Jioegpoi Hank getting shocked for attempting to hack the ship and the ship apologizing. Wolverine and Cyclops are just standing there like “why are we here playing voyeur to this weird shit?”

I knew it, the scroll was planted. I fucking called it.

They need to stop giving Hank compelling love interests and then getting rid of them by the end of the episode.

Episode 10: Longshot

Logan teaching Jubilee to drive!!! And he’s wearing a fuckin’ cowboy hat and a bolo tie. Why is he dressed for the rodeo? And he’s just such a dad for the rest of the episode, he recognizes Jubilee’s crush on Longshot and IMMEDIATELY goes into Dad Mode. 

“Bad doggie! No biscuit. We got leash laws in this town, mutt.” I fucking Love Wolverine. 

“Allowing me to scan his mind must be Longshot’s decision.” We love a king who respects consent. 

I fucking love Domo’s nicknames for Mojo. 

Yeah, I think I love Longshot. And I think most of the reason is just that I’ve read Exiles but ya know. He really is a heartthrob. He’s cliché but it’s a fun cliché. 

Honourable mention: that ram guy who threw away his gun to pull out a knife. 

Jubilee outfit without the coat is cute. Lol but they kept accidentally animating her with the coat on. 

Episode 11: Cold Comfort

BOBBYYYYY. Gay boy what are you doing here? Lol Bobby was the golden child, that much is obvious. At the same time he’s like “I was never good enough for you!” Dude Xavier let you get away with everything and that bred resentment in your teammates.

Imagine needing to have absolutely no pushback in your decision-making, so to avoid having an argument with your boyfriend you fake your own kidnapping and start dating someone else without ever breaking up with the first guy. I wouldn’t hold it against her if it were just a simple misunderstanding, like if she left a note but he thought she wrote it under duress, but she purposely led him to believe that she needed to be rescued. 

They need to stop introducing characters that could be permanent additions to the team and then squandering that.

Episode 12 & 13: Savage Land, Strange Heart

Who is this chicken lady? I can’t take her seriously, she looks like a chicken. 

Rogue and Storm are lowkey dating and I love it. 

NO ONE KNOWS HOW TO CLOSE THEIR EYES. Who knows? Maybe it isn’t as simple as closing your eyes or looking away… but then why have Sauron repeat the phrase “look into my eyes” if you don’t actually have to look for him to control you? It’s stupid. 

“Well, next time Storm is kidnapped, I’ll make sure they take her someplace nice.”

The Savage Lands are fucking boring oh my god. 

I’m guessing… Sinister was in the soil when they last left… they’re saying Garokk is in the soil… hmm?? I’m probably wrong tho… it actually is just Garokk, that’s boring.

Episode 14, 15, 16, 17: The Dark Phoenix

This whole saga gave me the ick. It made me sick to watch. It’s is just a very disgusting storyline. First, Phoenix invalidates Jean’s free will, then the motherfuckin’ Rape Syndicate drops in and invalidates Phoenix’s free will. It’s just very gross and I felt like I was playing voyeur to some gross man’s fantasy. OH WAIT I literally fucking was because of that creep character I refuse to remember the name of.

Episode 18: Orphan’s End

What an on-the-nose title for an episode where Cyclops learns his father is alive. Oh by the way that was mentioned before, his father is a space pirate. 

Cyclops mockingly calling Corsair “dad” fuels me. Let him tear his father a new one. 

Corsair says that if he’d known his children were alive nothing could have stopped him from coming back. Girly you never even looked, deadbeat. Just assumed your sons were dead for convenience, motherfucker. 

Episode 19: Love in Vain

We need a codeword for when Rogue gets dragged into some bullshit by toxic people from her past. Girl has had too much. Cody gave me bad vibes from the beginning. 

The fact that they defeat the Brood by talking to their sentient fish space ship? Two for two on sentient ships saving the day this season.  

Logan trying to comfort Rogue but her gravitating toward Gambit, the one whose affections she spurned going after the one that got away… I just got a lotta feelings, okay?

I kind of hate what they did to fblthp by the way (surprisingly long post)

Like here's the card the character is first shown on. While he's a main focus of the art his name only comes up in the flavour text - he's being used to help evoke the feeling that this card is actually about, being lost.

The specificity of his silly design and silly name helps make the scenario more concrete and in doing so got people invested in the character

Now there's already kind of a limit to what you can further do with this kind of guy, he's not by nature intended to become any more prominent than he already is, but what they did end up doing fits quite nicely

In a few different cards set on ravnica he appears as a cameo in the art. Not a main focus, not referenced in the flavour text, he's just doing his usual business of being lost and overshadowed by everything else going on as he is by the crowds in the original piece

But of course, not satisfied by that, we get fblthp becoming the center of a card in his own right:

I don't entirely hate this - in war of the spark the landscape of ravnica dramatically shifts & now fblthp's typical lostness, incongruity, becomes a touchstone for those more invested in the setting. Whether it's a crowd or a warzone, fblthp remains lost.

I think the point where it becomes a little too much is this:

Now alongside borborygmos, the joke becomes, of course, that fblthp's small stature is overshadowed by the massive cyclops. But nonetheless fblthp figures heavily in this card - is not hidden away like his cameos, but placed in a spot where the eye is drawn to. His name is on the name of the card, his colour identity of blue is in the casting cost, and his ability to "get lost" actually serves as a powerful way to protect the card from removal. This card is part of a cycle of legendary creatures teaming up to defend their home planes from phyrexia and in that context fblthp is elevated to that mythic status - no longer a representation of the overshadowed & everyday life of ravnican citizens, but as an example of one of the exceptions to it.

And that, in turn, leads to:

This fucking sucks, dude. Fblthp is not remotely 'lost' in this card, he is the main attraction, the center of attention, perspective meaning he actually overshadows the dragons surrounding him. Mechanically speaking - the "plot" keyword was introduced in thunder junction, the set this card is from. he does not remotely feel out of place in his design.

The single, solitary way in which this card works is that it takes the joke of fblthp to the next level, has him cameo in not a different card but a different plane entirely, puts him in an incongruous cowboy hat, makes him not just lost but lost 'on the Range'.

The problem with this is that it's also the entire joke of the set.

Every character is incongruous in Thunder Junction because none of them are native to the plane, it is filled with returning characters where the whole point is "look it's Oko but he has a cowboy hat, please laugh"

And it's not just Planeswalkers, either - with the introduction of omenpaths to the lore now any character can go to different planes. Maybe fblthp could have continued to be funny if he was the only non-planeswalker to appear in truly foreign locales, propelled only by the mysterious power of The Bit

But it's ultimately impossible for anyone, any thing to be truly incongruous in the post-modern era of magic the gathering because they all have to be recognisable, marketable & evocative of nostalgia

A little guy whose whole bit is cameo appearances cannot survive in a world whose entire design philosophy is oriented towards increasingly unsubtle cameo appearances

April Fools’ Day

I thought I’d share some of the goofy images generated by AI.

First, boxers seemed like a good subject matter to try. But I haven’t attempted anything involving boxers again since the first image set I got back had 4 like this. Most of these tend to be animal-based, actually.

On the flip side, I’m kinda impressed that the this prompt worked so well when I tried to create a hero image for the post…

I have constant issues with image generation. But it’s honestly impressive how well it generally works. The fact that it usually knows to create the right Robin or Wolverine or whatever is notable. (Although Cyclops from the X-Men always looks like a mythic cyclops when I try.)

nonsense deadpool & wolverine rant

ive been talking about deadpool 3 for days over on twitter -- which is a lot for a movie i was meh about and will forget in 2 weeks (like i have all other deadpool films). BUT i like thinking about how gay ppl & themes are treated in popular film and this is probably going to be the biggest "gay themed" film this year ... which is sad considering this is the year of 2 luca guadagnino films and monkey man and tv glow et al. anyhow. this was a big hit in fandom -- which should not be a surprise considering the mcu and comics fandoms. the "this was sooooo gay" response has been irritating, and so has the counter-argument. the text may not be a gay text but it DOES use gay elements in its text. like Obviously so. to the point that it's hard to discern whether it's appropriation or meaningful, a homophobic joke or somewhat earnest... and why???

part of it will always be the comic characterization of deadpool as a hypersexual pansexual freak who sexually harasses men because that has been deemed highlarious. there's at least one joke recycled (about being tied up together and getting an erection), replacing spiderman in the comics with wolverine in the movie. i can easily see straight men playing these jokes with each other -- i probably have on youtube. this is what makes the "you cant deny this is gay" thing fandom people say sooooooooooooooooooo annoying -- HOMOSEXUAL encounters are not limited to people with THE GAY GENE. straight men sexually harass their friends ("friends") all the time. allllll the time. what makes someone (and a relationship) gay is intention and affection and desire and identity and cultural place -- and a billion other things. there are many movies about two men (and less about two women) who everyone sees as super gay... defiant ones (1958) comes to mind since i recently was reminded of it. heat 1995, thelma & louise 1991. dead poets society 1989 also comes to mind. but no one Serious is claiming this is the dominant (as in "common") reading or INTENDED meaning -- no one is saying these are gay characters in gay relationships. they arent like fried green tomatoes 1991 or midnight cowboy 1969 or rebel without a cause 1955, where it was verifiably gay in some way.

there's a phenomena where a character / relationship (probably) wasnt supposed to be gay, but it came off that way UNDENIABLY because they borrowed too much from gay experiences -- like scream 1992, or very commonly in terms of trans experiences: psycho 1960, silence of the lambs 1991, synecdoche new york 2008. and fraiser lol. Every movie is different and has a different way of doing things which result in different suggestions and conclusions and interpretations and impacts. Big surprise.

deadpool 3 obscures these boundaries in this new pseudo-progressive age. but it is still inaccurate to pretend it was "gay coding" -- as in they were hiding a gay story via Big Subtext and using a straight story to sell a gay movie (which i have seen suggested the use of DP's ex). i cant fucking believe we're still doing destiel conspiracies. im sure stucky had a similar reaction this deadpool ship has (and the spideypool ship), but i think it is understood that Steve Whatshisname wasnt and would never be gay (Bucky could be, he has time).

the misunderstanding comes in the blurring. it's like in the middle of a political compass. ok fine i made one

some moments obviously meant to evoke a gay spirit: bar scene, car scene, madonna scene, "introducing the boyfriend" scene, the Appreciation of the Male Body & Fighting as Fucking theme (note that DP's lesbians were just standing there in 2 scenes?)

Deadpool (and Wolverine) really are pan: an alternate Wolverine is in love w the Mythic Hercules in a comic series (and maybe Cyclops? Subtextually? Throupley?). deadpool is well known in comics, but he does off-hand talk about having non-vaginal sex (? or masturbating?) in this movie

what is romantic is defined by DP's LI: the movie cant hide behind everything being a joke when it has a guiding emotional core consisting of DP's lost (female) love, who he can express affection and attraction to in both serious and comedic contexts

No honest romantic or sexual tension: i have seen movies with subtextual / coded tension and this doesnt have it. it's no popped champagne bottle, or face caressed in blood. there is also no story. i havent mentioned this yet but this movie has a really lackluster story between dp & wolverine that doesnt allow for much interpretation even in a platonic or narrative sense

all these things are true at once, and ignoring one aspect for another doesnt make sense of the film (and characters and audience reaction) as a whole. at the end of the day............. it doesnt matter........ i only really care about being accurate and respecting film history & gay history & continuing to call for gay gay gay stories in popular film. dp3 made a lot of gay jokes that were genuinely unexpected, so it isnt LE FOU 2. but it isnt the end of the line. this was a good thread that described the split well
