Wandering Out & Moving Back

Last week we moved our trailer back to Gabriola. It was the first time it’s been here since June 30, 2017 when we started our adventure. We quickly dropped it at our friend’s property, (they have graciously allowed us to stay there while we await the return of our house at the end of this month). We stayed one night, then we ventured out to see our friends who have a summer place at Cultus Lake, (about 1.5 hours east of Vancouver). It’s been an annual trip since forever and we were happy that we could make it happen this year. Craig and I have had a very small bubble socially, so this was a BIG deal! Just a week prior we bought an electric car, and we were eager to take our eGolf on its maiden voyage.

Armed with our face masks, some wine, and a little shopping list for one of the local malls, we set out. As always when trying something new since COVID-19 started, I was excited/nervous. I was so glad we went though, as we had a fabulous time! It was relaxing to do a little bike riding along the Vedder River, and some hiking and walking along nearby trails. We also went blueberry picking, which is ironic as I don’t like blueberries. This year the shrubs were laden though. We were able to see our good friends and enjoy some fun, (but safe), time with them. As always we appreciate each year the effort that Tom & Shaun make to host us.

We came back via Victoria as I had a brunch set up with a friend and former colleague and I was stopping in at the office of one of my clients to finally meet them in person! We stayed with our friend Marc and enjoyed a nice dinner out, followed by wine on his back deck.

After 5 days away though, it was time for our return to Gabriola. Last night we were able to go watch our softball team play. The league has returned to play a shortened season with full COVID-19 precautions in place. We opted not to play due to our uncertainty with our house situation, but it was great to be able to watch them. It actually made me relax and feel normal, (even though there are only allowed to be 50 people, including players and officials, at the park).

I needed a little normalcy, because until the past few weeks, B.C. had been a rock star in the COVID-19 world, but it looks like the wheels are falling off the bus. Yesterday we recorded 85 new cases, the 3rd highest number EVER during this pandemic. While we still have very low hospitalization numbers, this number had me in a bit of a panic. The numbers now are mainly caused by young people out enjoying summer parties. I’m torn because I can recollect my summer student days and I know that I was out...a lot, but I also know what those numbers can mean for us. I try to relax and remind myself that I am doing what I can to keep myself, my friends and family, and everyone around me safe...and that’s all I can do.
