Some bunch of teenagers from 1964 who called themselves The High Numbers.  Gee, I wonder whatever happened to those guys?
(I love that this sixty-year-old footage from a basement club exists at all. I love that the Who’s career basically happened because of this footage—Kit Lambert was shooting a documentary on youth subcultures, filmed this, and then said “Never mind the documentary, I’m going to be this band’s manager!” Looking at it today they’re already recognizably themselves, though Roger is skinnier and shorter-haired than I’ve ever seen him and John holds his bass a little differently. Keith is subdued by his usual standards, but look at him – he’s absolutely aware of where the camera is at any given moment, and he’s playing to it. I love their mod audience. I can feel how hot that room probably was.)

Plasticspaceship tagged me to post 5 favourite songs but, as that would be entirely impossible as my favourites change pretty much daily, I thought I'd post five cover versions that I love.
Gentle On My Mind was written by Glenn Campbell and Aretha turned this country hit into a soul classic.
The late great Kirsty MacColl gave this Billy Bragg song a poingnacy and edge that the original didn't really have.
The Cowboy Junkies have recorded many cover versions, all of which I adore. But as I've recently been revisiting Mary Margaret O'Hara's sublime Miss America, it is this one I have been listening to of late.
Johnny sings Lenny.
Kathryn Williams recorded an entire album of cover versions titled Relations, and I hiighly recommend giving it a listen. I love the original of this song by NIrvana, but this version has an eeriness that really adds something special.

Frank Watkinson: YouTube's Rockstar of the Golden Years covers Radiohead's "Creep"
Frank Watkinson’s song covers are like musical CPR, reviving old tracks with a fresh twist. Just like Johnny Cash’s iconic take on Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt,” Watkinson’s version of Radiohead’s “Creep” is a total game-changer.Enjoy

What are your favorite cover versions of songs?
Here are some of mine in the order they came to mind:
Sunshine of Your Love - Living Colour
I never realized this song needed poc (well, they all do), heavier guitar, and drums turned up to 11.
To Sir With Love - 10,000 Maniacs feat. Michael Stipe
With this one it’s less the song than the nostalgia which is very much boosted by what feels like a school-age romance between Natalie Merchant and Michael Stipe. They and their excitement/chemistry were so alive.
Can’t Get Used to Losing You/The Tears of a Clown - The (English) Beat
Easy. These are the same songs as the originals but have been transformed and made unrecognizable.
Read My Mind - boygenius
Broken down to be chill, haunting as sung by their three voices in unison like they do, they give it a renewed intensity.
Hotel California - Gipsy Kings
It’s more ornate and pretty than the original, and the Spanish elements make it much more authentic California while it being largely not in English maintains the ethereal quality imo.
Voices Carry - Sky Ferreira
More hurt, more bass.
Teenage Dirtbag - Phoebe Bridgers
All the feels this song always wanted to have.
It’s Not Unusual- Belly
Without context it’s not much more than a gender swap but hearing Tanya Donelly, known more for singing songs about losing teeth and psychological abuse belt out a Tom Jones classic out of nowhere is amazing.
Lovesong- The Brunettes
I’ve read them called twee and that tender, bright, romantic outlook turns what’s already a masterpiece into a love song for another crowd.
I dunno why I made this…. Blah.
