Plasticspaceship tagged me to post 5 favourite songs but, as that would be entirely impossible as my favourites change pretty much daily, I thought I'd post five cover versions that I love.

Gentle On My Mind was written by Glenn Campbell and Aretha turned this country hit into a soul classic.

The late great Kirsty MacColl gave this Billy Bragg song a poingnacy and edge that the original didn't really have.

The Cowboy Junkies have recorded many cover versions, all of which I adore. But as I've recently been revisiting Mary Margaret O'Hara's sublime Miss America, it is this one I have been listening to of late.

Johnny sings Lenny.

Kathryn Williams recorded an entire album of cover versions titled Relations, and I hiighly recommend giving it a listen. I love the original of this song by NIrvana, but this version has an eeriness that really adds something special.

1. WERE YOU NAMED AFTER ANYBODY?

Yes, I’m named after my great-grandmother.

2. WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU CRIED?

I tear up pretty easily, but full-on crying was probably when a friend of mine died this spring.

3. DO YOU HAVE KIDS?

Nope.

4. DO YOU USE SARCASM A LOT?

Not that much. I’ve been described as “earnest and warm-hearted” (noncomplimentary).

5. WHAT SPORTS DO YOU PLAY/HAVE YOU PLAYED?

I’m not really athletic but I did run cross country (slowly) in high school.

6. WHAT'S THE FIRST THING YOU NOTICE ABOUT SOMEONE?

This question stumped me a bit. I guess I will make some snap judgment about whether someone’s vibe feels bullshitty or authentic. Not that I always get it right.

7. EYE COLOUR?

Brown.

8. SCARY MOVIES OR HAPPY ENDINGS?

Out of those two choices, happy endings. I’m not into being scared on purpose.

9. ANY SPECIAL TALENTS?

I mean, there are things I’m good at, but none of them are especially unusual. I’m good at close reading of texts, I’m a competent writer, I have a passable singing voice. I can tell the difference between margarine and butter. I can say ��Saskatchewan’ without starting to stutter.

10. WHERE WERE YOU BORN?

Pennsylvania.

11. WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES?

Well, fanfic, you know. Also knitting (slowly). I just finished a hat!

12. DO YOU HAVE PETS?

No.

13. HOW TALL ARE YOU?

About 5′ 5″.

14. FAVOURITE SUBJECT IN SCHOOL?

English/Literature.

15. DREAM JOB?

I like doing translations, but from what I hear it’s mostly done freelance, and I’m not so into that idea. But like, if I could have a steady job translating things, that would be sweet.

homicide: life on the street - i learned so much about racialized issues in this show as well as innovative storytelling

deadwood - what is there to say? you'd have to be a hooplehead not to get how great this show is

the walking dead - i never expected to love it as much as i do but it's one of the best shows for character arcs i've ever seen

twin peaks - so so pivotal in terms of what i find frightening

night court - this is reaching back but when i was a girl it taught me a shit ton about character and pacing plus was surprisingly compassionate for a half-hour sitcom in the 80s

star trek - my whole family loves this show and it's warranted lol
