Zeus
The Zeus was first built by the Lyran Commonwealth in 2787, just as the First Succession War began. Built at the request of Lyran Commonwealth Armed Forces commanders for a new light-assault 'Mech designed to engage the enemy at long range and perform hit-and-run attacks, the Zeus is fast enough to keep up with most heavy 'Mechs, and with a sturdy frame, eleven and a half tons of standard armor and a versatile weapons array, is equally capable of defeating them. Its use of reliable, low-maintenance and easily modified systems at a time when most 'Mechs were built with cutting-edge technology also proved fortuitous, allowing the Zeus to be produced long after those advanced components had become Lostech.
On the drawing board three years prior to its introduction, the first two prototypes of the Zeus would receive their first "test run" when they were forced to fight off an assault on the Hesperus II factory by the Draconis Combine Mustered Soldiery. As the enemy broke through Lyran lines, the two 'Mechs were called up to assist, and through sheer novelty and long-range firepower, forced the Kuritans to pause. This allowed additional reinforcements to push DCMS forces back. While successful in holding off the attack, these prototypes were noticeably more advanced than the production model and armed with a PPC, which proved erratic and unreliable during the battle. The cause of this behavior was later discovered to be insufficient shielding which created wild magnetic interactions between the weapon and the Zeus's engine. To ensure the Zeus was delivered to the front-lines quickly it was decided to replace the advanced energy weapon with the simpler autocannon.
The 'Mech would first appear in significant numbers when the 15th Lyran Guards recaptured the planet Sakhalin, and through the course of the Succession Wars the Zeus had a long and storied history within the Commonwealth, becoming a well-respected assault 'Mech. After the end of the Third Succession War advances had allowed engineers to mount a PPC on the Zeus again, with the resulting ZEU-6T model becoming the standard during the Fourth Succession War and later the War of 3039. The design also won high praise among mercenary units, none more so than Zeta Battalion of Wolf's Dragoons.
The Zeus would face resistance by some units of the former AFFS following the creation of the Federated Commonwealth, whose "Davion pride" prevented them from making use of the 'Mech despite its superiority to many of their own machines. Likewise as the FedCom military increasingly took on a Davion flavor many Lyran commanders were insistent that their pride and joy was too valuable to give up, and so prodded Defiance Industries to produce new models which made use of newly recovered Star League Lostech. The debut of the ZEU-9S Zeus would see production of the previous variants discontinued and examples of this signature Lyran 'Mech shipped to all corners of the Commonwealth as a symbol of the new alliance. By the time of the FedCom Civil War though, the majority of Zeus 'Mechs were in Lyran hands, with many of those given to Davion units having been relegated to rear-guard duty or sold to mercenaries. New variants would continue to be produced for the LAAF and, following their capture of Hesperus II in 3070, the Word of Blake Militia.
The prototype Zeus carried a PPC, but the most common, best-known variant of the Zeus, the ZEU-6S, mounted as its primary weapon a Defiance Type J Autocannon/5 mounted in the left arm, backed up by a Coventry Star Fire LRM-15 in the right arm for engaging enemies at long ranges. The missile launcher's placement, set around and back from a central core, was a unique way to protect the weapon while allowing the Zeus to use that arm as a bludgeon in hand-to-hand combat; the complicated arrangement also made the launcher prone to failure without regular maintenance. Both were fed by a ton of ammunition each, a source of concern among some pilots who preferred more shots from the LRM-15, though others noted by the point it ran dry the armor was probably compromised and an empty missile bin was less likely to explode. The Thunderbolt A5M Large Laser, mounted in the left torso and used to engage enemies at intermediate ranges, was also a unique challenge for Defiance. Whereas a typical barrel-type large laser wouldn't fit in the compact space, the company used their rare knowledge of fiber optics to design a smaller though no less effective weapon. Finally two Defiance B3M medium lasers, one mounted in the center torso and one in the left facing rearwards, were used for close-in work. This combination of weaponry made the Zeus a 'Mech that was deadly at any range.

Land Rover Bell Aurens Longnose
The Land Rover Bell Aurens Longnose comes neither from England nor from the desert, but from Germany. It is a special conversion based on a 1967 Land Rover Series II. This mixture of 1930s sports car, desert racing boat and brute off-road monster is the creation of German Landi-lovers Thomas Bell and Holger Kalvelage. The aluminium body was handmade at Lorenz + Knorr-Held in Erlangen. Everything about this "offroadster" is special. The two seats have been moved southwards just in front of the rear axle, the rest is the bonnet. Under the longnose works a performance-optimised 4.6 litre V8 from a Range Rover, which was upgraded to 5.0 litres by JE-Engineering/Coventry. Beautiful details such as the gear knob in the shape of a cricket ball or the sidepipes, leather straps for the bonnet or the laced steering wheel complete the extravagance of this prototype of which only two were produced. Originally, the production of a small series with different motorisations up to the aircraft engine was planned. However, in the course of completing the second prototype, production had to be discontinued for lack of liquid funds and in view of the very high development and manufacturing costs.

Peep
On "Peeping Tom" -- In A Concise Dictionary of Phrase and Fable (1993), B. A. Phythian writes:
Leofric, Earl of Mercia and one of the most powerful men in England during the first half of the 11th century, imposed certain taxes which his wife, Lady Godiva, patroness of Coventry, asked him to remove. He promised to do so if she would ride naked through the city, which she accordingly did in 1040.
But most medieval scholars agree that the ride never took place. Daniel Donoghue, professor of English and American literature and language, explains that contemporary historians did not consider Godiva particularly noteworthy; what little was written about her at the time mentioned her merely as the wife of a famous man. He points out that two centuries after her death, chroniclers in the Benedictine abbey of St Albans inserted a fully developed narrative into their Latin histories: the legend of Lady Godiva was born.
So it starts with Flores Historiarum (Flowers of History – completed in 1235?), by Roger de Wendover (died 1236), a monk at the abbey of St Albans. And goes from there.
An edict forbidding the town’s citizens to gaze on Godiva during her ride was added to the legend.
The creation of Tom specifically appears to originate with a 17th century misreading of a 16th century painting. The painting that the soldiers describe is most probably Lady Godiva (1586), by Adam von Noort. It shows Lady Godiva riding through the empty streets, and a bearded man looking out an upstairs window from a building on the right-hand side. This man is probably Leofric, but his identity is not obvious, which might have contributed to the emergence of the figure of the voyeur.
Eventually, the voyeur was provided with an occupation; in the above-mentioned book, Daniel Donoghue explains:
As a tailor he would conveniently be equipped with an awl to bore a viewing hole, but the occupation would be appropriate for other reasons as well. Proverbially, tailors were thought to be less than fully men even to the point of suggesting their emasculation (“Nine tailors make the man”). So, for example, when a tailor in a fairy tale accomplishes something heroic, his deficient manhood throws the magical transformation into greater relief. In addition, the tailor’s business of making clothes, in contrast to Godiva’s nakedness, may have added to the thematic appeal.
So. There you go. Peeping Tom. Expanding the universe in crevices and nooks within the stories we sell to ourselves built off of small titillation and moralizing.

"Ghost Town"
This town, is coming like a ghost town All the clubs have been closed down This place, is coming like a ghost town Bands won't play no more Too much fighting on the dance floor Do you remember the good old days before the ghost town? We danced and sang, and the music played in a de boomtown This town, is coming like a ghost town Why must the youth fight against themselves? Government leaving the youth on the shelf This place, is coming like a ghost town No job to be found in this country Can't go on no more The people getting angry This town, is coming like a ghost town This town, is coming like a ghost town This town, is coming like a ghost town This town, is coming like a ghost town This town, is coming like a ghost town This town, is coming like a ghost town This town, is coming like a ghost town This town, is coming like a ghost town
Riots have broken out around Britain.
Charles and Diana are about to marry.
And backstage at Top of The Pops, The Specials are falling apart.
In a few minutes they will perform their latest hit Ghost Town, which over the years, would come to be regarded as one of the greatest British singles of all time. It was a track which bottled the discord, racial tensions and societal breakdown happening in the UK that summer.
There had already been riots in Brixton that April, over the increased use of a new stop-and-search policy, the so-called sus law, which was named Operation Swamp. Police were said to have mounted a campaign of harassment against the black community in south London.
Brixton was the centre of clashes between members of the public and the police
Terry Hall is telling the band that he too has had enough. Worn down by touring, band infighting and struggling to deal with success, he wants out. It is too difficult to be singing about disharmony, while surrounded by it, both inside and outside The Specials.
"We knew it was going to end as we were recording it (Ghost Town)," Terry Hall told Front Row in 2019.
"It was bizarre. It took about eight months to record. I don't think there were more than two of us in the studio at any point. Those weren't good signs really. It finished up with me in a living room in Tottenham singing Ghost Town. It was all over the place. But it was a great way to bow out."
The song was written by the band's founding member Jerry Dammers, but it is also the track with which lead singer Terry Hall is most closely identified. Every TV and radio report about his death has centred on Ghost Town.
The single was simply one of the most timely releases in music history.
Terry Hall performing in Amsterdam earlier this year
"Talk about zeitgeist. That one song suddenly captured so much," remembered Specials fan and Bend It Like Beckham director Gurinder Chada in the 2021 BBC Documentary 2 Tone: The Sound of Coventry.
"If there is one song Margaret Thatcher wishes never got released, it's probably Ghost Town," she added.
On 7 July 1981, Radio One announced that Ghost Town had replaced Michael Jackson's One Day In Your Life at the top of the charts.
That same day, newspaper front pages were full of reports about the first ever use of CS gas grenades by the police on mainland Britain, as they struggled to contain the Toxteth Riots. These were sparked by tensions between police and the local community in Liverpool.
By the end of the week more than 20 towns and cities including London, Nottingham, Wolverhampton, Leeds and Luton had riots of their own. The Specials were providing the soundtrack.
Amy Winehouse and Terry Hall both attended the Q Awards in 2009
In 2 Tone: The Sound of Coventry, Dammers explained how the creation of the song started with him sitting at his home organ, trying different diminished chords and working out how wailing could substitute a chorus.
"I think I wrote the music first. I was working on that for ages. The lyrics I wrote on tour just seeing what was going down around the country. It was about the recession and three million people on the dole. It's about the police harassment and unemployment. It was like a perfect storm really."
For years there has been debate over whether or not Ghost Town is specifically about their hometown of Coventry. The decline of the car industry had turned a thriving post-war economy into a concrete jungle.
Shakin' Stevens' Green Door shot up the UK singles chart
Neville Staple from The Specials has stated he believes the song should be taken more generally: "In Coventry and all over England it painted the same picture. This town is coming like a ghost town."
Terry Hall's own understanding of Ghost Town changed over the last 40 years. In 1981, when speaking to the New York Times, he insisted: "We were talking about riots in Bristol and Brixton. The fact that it became popular when it did was just a weird coincidence."
But speaking on BBC Radio Five Live in 2019, he told Nihal Arthanayake: "We made a record about how we saw the north of Britain. People think it was about Coventry. It wasn't. It was about Glasgow and Liverpool and Newcastle. It was about the north."
Ghost Town has certainly had an after-life.
When Amy Winehouse joined The Specials on stage at the V Festival in 2009, it was Ghost Town that she wanted to sing.
In Father Ted, when the priests organised a disco and the DJ, Father "Spin Master" O'Dwyer only has one record that everyone has to dance to all night, the 7 inch on repeat is Ghost Town.
West End Girls
On Desert Island Discs, it's a recent favourite, having been picked four times in the last three years: by the charity worker Claire Horton, the Director of Tate Maria Balshaw, the foreign affairs specialist Fiona Hill and the actor Rupert Everett, who called it "one of the great songs of the era".
And in 2020, The Guardian named it the second best number one single in the UK of all time, behind West End Girls by Pet Shop Boys, a song released four year later and not entirely dissimilar with the sense of urban decay which it creates.
Ghost Town is now considered to be an all-time classic, but its reign over the summer of 1981 came to an ignominious end. The day before 28 million people watched the wedding of the future King to Lady Diana Spencer, The Specials were dethroned.
The lunchtime unveiling of the charts revealed that rising 22 places to number one was none other than Shakin' Stevens with Green Door.
The band's era as chart-dominating stars had well and truly been slammed shut by Shaky. Within months, Hall had formed Fun Boy Three and The Specials in their original incarnation were over.
More than 40 years on Ghost Town stands as their defining work - the perfect coming together of pop and politics at exactly the right moment in history. It was that rarest of things, a song dealing with subjects found in The Economist while the band were on the cover of Smash Hits. Special indeed.

"The spider Bourgeois repeatedly insisted was the image of her mother, whose work was repairing tapestries, resonates not only with Arachne in Greek myth but with the spider woman-mother-goddess figures in the myths of southwestern American Indian tribes and the formidable Teotihuacan Spider Woman of pre-Columbian Mexico, the goddess of creation itself. Robert Goldwater was an expert on what was then called "primitive art." No one will convince me that the artist wasn't aware of every one of these resonances. One myth is deftly woven into other myths."
— Siri Hustvedt, Mothers, Fathers, and Others: Essays
"This arachnoid maternal shape is of more than biographical interest. It bespeaks Bourgeois's familial links with the arts of weaving, but its power as a representation of maternal ambivalence is also striking. Mother is both static and busy, many-limbed but imprisoned; she is ugly and useful, frightening and familiar, so competent that a kind of helplessness adheres to her emotional and spiritual being, atop the clever busy legs. The spider is benevolent and productive, a worker, a provider, but she is fundamentally unfree. She traps things in her web; she embroiders her tiny corner of the universe."
— Rachel Cusk, Coventry

In the picturesque town of Warwick, nestled in the heart of England, a silent revolution is taking place—one that is paving the way for a greener, more sustainable future. With its rolling hills and historic charm, Warwick is not only a haven for history enthusiasts but also a beacon of environmental consciousness, thanks in part to its robust recycling collection programs.
Recycling Collection Warwick is more than just a routine service; it's a vital component of the town's commitment to reducing waste, conserving resources, and minimizing its carbon footprint. As the global community grapples with the realities of climate change and environmental degradation, initiatives like recycling collection have emerged as tangible solutions at the local level.
At the forefront of Warwick's recycling efforts are dedicated municipal authorities and community organizations who have worked tirelessly to streamline collection processes and raise awareness about the importance of responsible waste management. Through education campaigns, outreach programs, and innovative recycling infrastructure, they have fostered a culture of sustainability that resonates with residents and businesses alike.
The benefits of recycling collection extend far beyond Warwick's borders, contributing to broader environmental conservation efforts and setting an example for neighboring communities. By diverting recyclable materials from landfills, Warwick not only reduces the strain on finite resources but also minimizes pollution and greenhouse gas emissions associated with waste disposal.
Moreover, recycling collection in Warwick serves as a catalyst for economic growth and job creation, stimulating the local green economy and supporting industries centered around recycling and resource recovery. From recycling facilities to renewable energy ventures, the ripple effects of sustainable practices are felt across various sectors, bolstering Warwick's resilience in an ever-changing world.
However, despite the progress made, challenges remain on the horizon. Continued investment in infrastructure, technology, and public engagement is essential to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of recycling collection in Warwick. Additionally, ongoing collaboration between stakeholders, including government agencies, businesses, and residents, is crucial to address emerging issues and seize opportunities for further improvement.

Today marks 57 years since the activation of WOTAN, one of the early predecessors to the internet and artificial intelligence! Where would we be without the world wide web connecting every computer in the world in a great global network? Probably outside.
WOTAN, short for Will Operating Thought ANalogue, was invented by a team lead by Professor Brett with the intention of it becoming the world's first thinking computer. Following some isolated runs, on the 16th of July 1966 WOTAN was planned to become the central computer of a global network linking all computers - an event called C-Day.
"WOTAN can assist with humanitarian crises. Call for food on a tele-printer at UNESCO. and WOTAN can activate a sophisticated distributions and shipping network," claimed Brett in an interview. The machine was installed at the top of the Post Office Tower in London and was to handle telecommunications globally with its impressive mechanical mind.
It wasn't until WOTAN seemingly dispatched killer robots that the people involved in its creation thought that perhaps it might be a bit of a bad idea to link a unifying artificial intelligence into parliament, the White House, the Kremlin, Cape Kennedy, NATO, the RAF, and Telstar.
The British armed forces were dispatched to a warehouse in Coventry where they encountered with a bizarre mobile computer armed with a strange and highly effective weapon. An emergency cabinet meeting was called and citizens of London were warned via radio and television to remain in their homes.
Those alive today who remember the incident recall frequent radio bulletins throughout the day as another of the machines marched its way across London from Battersea to Covent Garden, attacking people who were foolish enough to venture outside.
The "war machine" was eventually captured at Cornwall Gardens, which had been cordoned off by police and military personal. Present at the scene were royal navy cadet Ben Jackson and Sir Charles Summer, along with a mystery man who was seen tampering with the machine.
A white-haired man in a long black coat and Astrakhan hat going by the title of "Doctor" was seen to be involved in the events surrounding C-Day. Curiously, there was also a "Doctor" operating during the mysterious events at Gatwick, where a police box was found to be obstructing two runways. This Doctor, however, was a small man with a haunted expression and a black Beatles-style haircut, wearing checkered trousers and a bowtie. These events were concurrent, meaning there were two Doctors operating in relatively close proximity.
Following the interference of the Doctor, the machine was seen heading to the Post Office Tower where it is said to have turned on its master WOTAN and destroyed it.
The events were widely reported in the press at the time, as one would expect. Yet the dangers of artificial intelligence remain, and few today ever speak of C-Day: the day a machine tried to wipe out the human race.
The threat WOTAN posed has been downplayed and the events of that day have faded from the public's minds, though the true threat remains. WOTAN may have been destroyed but people seem more desperate than ever these days to submit themselves to machine intelligence. I don't think it will be long before we face another WOTAN, and some believe one London-based organisation has already covered up a relatively recent repeat of the C-Day incident.
