SPIRITBOX Releases New Single 'The Void'
SPIRITBOX has released a brand new song, "The Void", and its accompanying visualizer. The track features the band's calling card of complex, multi-layered soundscapes and gloriously ethereal, hugely catchy vocals whilst also furthering their incredible ability to release music that is immediately recognizable as SPIRITBOX but simultaneously sounds unlike any of their previous releases.
SPIRITBOX is currently on the road for its first ever U.S. headline run - the completely sold-out "Eternal Blue" tour, where the new track has been making its surprise live debut to much excitement from fans.
Speaking on the official release of "The Void", SPIRITBOX vocalist Courtney LaPlante shares: "'The Void' is a song that came about very quickly. I didn't have to fight with anything to write it, and when that happens, I don't argue with it. It's a type of song that I've been wanting to write for a long time. I've heard it hundreds of times now, and it makes me so happy every time I hear it. It's been such an amazing experience playing this song on our tour, and watching people hear it for the first time in real time."
The "Eternal Blue" tour 2023, produced by Live Nation, began in Vancouver on April 10 and will culminate in Minneapolis on May 10.
SPIRITBOX is continuing to support its debut album, "Eternal Blue", released in September 2021 via Rise Records and Pale Chord. Since the arrival of "Eternal Blue", SPIRITBOX has been conquering the live arena one mind-bending performance at a time. Prior to the "Eternal Blue" tour, they played major festivals in the U.S., Australia and Europe, several sold-out, one-off headline shows in major cities such as London, Los Angeles and Munich and toured with the likes of UNDEROATH, GHOST and LAMB OF GOD.
Once done touring the U.S., SPIRITBOX will hit Europe for a run of shows with GHOST in France, BRING ME THE HORIZON in Budapest and Paris, two co-headline shows with MOTIONLESS IN WHITE in Germany, standalone headline shows in Milan (Italy),Munster (Germany),Haarlem (Netherlands),Eindhoven (Netherlands) and Helsinki (Finland),several major festivals and finally the U.K., where they will play a run of headline shows supported by LOATHE and BRAND OF SACRIFICE.
"Eternal Blue" rolled in on a global tsunami of critical acclaim, from perfect score reviews and features everywhere including Spin, Forbes, Billboard and Alternative Press to multiple front covers including Kerrang!, Metal Hammer, Alternative Press, Rock Sound, Distorted Sound, Pollstar and Revolver. The album spawned a string of hit singles, including "Holy Roller", "Constance", "Circle With Me", "Secret Garden" and, most recently, "Hurt You". To date, "Eternal Blue" has clocked up 235 million streams.
SPIRITBOX followed the release of "Eternal Blue" with the three-song "Rotoscope" EP, in 2022. The "Rotoscope" title track came accompanied by an official music video shot by Max Moore, which has received over 3.1 million YouTube views so far. The EP has clocked up 24.9 million streams.
To date, SPIRITBOX have accumulated over 395 million career streams across platforms and 76.4 million YouTube views. They were also nominated for two Juno Awards, for "Breakthrough Group Of The Year" this year and "Metal/Hard Music Album Of The Year" last year.

Mini Reviews: "Wish," "American Fiction," and "Lisa Frankenstein"
Finally caught up to watching some movies from 2023, and others:
Bambi: I don't why they're making a horror movie version. This WAS a horror movie! Just the scene of that poor little bird getting freaked out and bolting from its hiding place only to...that was worse than the part with Bambi's mom because you actually saw the body.
The Adventures of Huck Finn: The version with Elijah Wood and Courtney B. Vance. It probably hasn't aged well, but after reading Percival Everett's James, I had to give it a watch.
Capote: Forget that stupid Ryan Murphy show, Philip Seymour Hoffman's Oscar-winning performance of Capote before he hit it big with In Cold Blood is a much better use of your time. I still don't like Capote as a person, but since this takes place back when he still had a modicum of decency, you can empathize with him slightly more.
Nightmare Alley: Part gothic horror and part noir movie, Bradley Cooper plays a carnival worker who fronts as a psychic. Probably the most despicable character he's ever played.
The Munsters: Rob Zombie, what the hell did you do to our beloved Herman and Lily Munster? This was hot garbage and nothing at all like the TV show we all knew and loved.
Morbius: Couldn't even get through five minutes. Nobody asked for this. Nobody.
American Fiction: I wish this had gotten more Oscars instead of just best adapted screenplay. A biting commentary of white guilt and pandering in the publishing industry. Now they HAVE to make a movie version of Yellowface!
Wish: I don't get why people though this was terrible. While it's certainly not Disney's best, it's far from its worst. It was cute, even if it was corny, and I liked the easter eggs. You can't just endlessly bitch about all the sequels and remakes, then turn your nose up at anything original because it doesn't meet your standards.
Shirley: Regina King rocks as Shirley Chisholm. Even though the movie has gotten mixed reviews, it's still worth watching, not just to tell the story of Chisolm's 1972 presidential campaign, but also for a takeaway that people have lately forgotten: if you don't vote, all your outrage is basically just yelling at a brick wall.
Lisa Frankenstein: Everyone that loved Heathers and Jennifer's Body will eat this up. It wasn't exactly my cup of tea, but it was entertaining -- and I love the '80s setting. I just wish Robin Williams were alive to see the quirky horror comedy movie his daughter made.

Gatland makes 6 changes to his Lions XV for the third Test finale
7:06am, 03 August 2021 Warren Gatland has made six changes to his starting team as the Lions look to clinch their Test series versus the Springboks in next Saturday’s deciding third Test in Cape Town. The Kiwi’s charges came unstuck in last weekend’s second Test, surrendering a 9-6 interval lead to lose 9-27 after they were held scoreless in the second half. ADVERTISEMENTThis has now resulted in Gatland taking remedial action similar to what happened in 2013 when he made six changes to his starting Lions team to face the Wallabies in that series decider after the opportunity to clinch the series with a game to spare wasn’t taken in Melbourne. Half the starting pack was changed for that decider eight years ago, along with the infamous decision to axe veteran Lions midfielder Brian O’Driscoll and also make a change at scrum-half. This time around, though, Gatland has made four changes to his backline, with just two alterations in his pack.
Graham Henry on how the Lions must play to win their series versus the Springboks Liam Williams, Josh Adams, Bundee Aki and Ali Price are all included at the expense of Stuart Hogg, Anthony Watson, Chris Harris and Conor Murray, with Robbie Henshaw repositioned to No13 from inside centre, while in the pack Wyn Jones and Ken Owens take over from Mako Vunipola and Luke Cowan-Dickie. It means that Wales, the 2021 Guinness Six Nations champions, now provide the biggest Test team representation with six players compared to Ireland’s four, England’s three and Scotland’s two. The contrasting second Test breakdown was England six, Ireland four, Scotland three and Wales two. Big selection calls this week – does Warren gamble from the start or bring on the game changers? @RugbyPass https://t.co/T7UX7t0wQX— Ben Kay (@BenKay5) August 3, 2021On the bench, Adam Beard, Finn Russell and Sam Simmonds feature for the first time in the Test series and will all win their first Lions cap should they take the field. Kyle Sinckler is also included subject to the outcome of a disciplinary hearing. Rory Sutherland, Tadgh Beirne, Taulupe Faletau and Owen Farrell, used as replacements in last Saturday’s defeat, drop out of the matchday 23. ADVERTISEMENT“The matchday 23 have an incredibly special opportunity in front of them, to seal a Lions series victory in South Africa,” said Gatland. “It doesn’t get much bigger than this and we are excited by the challenge that faces us on Saturday. We have no excuses from last week, the Springboks put us under pressure in the second half and deserved the win. We have to be much better than that second-half performance and I believe we will be.”LIONS (vs South Africa, third Test, Saturday) 15. Liam Williams (Scarlets, Wales) #833 14. 'La La Land,' 'Stranger Things' and 'Atlanta' sweep 2017 PGA Awards
“La La Land” is easily sweeping up all the awards this year, but Netflix’s “Stranger Things” jumped in on the action along with “Atlanta” for the 28th annual Producers Guild Awards (PGA).
The musical comedy-drama went up against “Arrival,” “Deadpool,” “Fences,” “Hacksaw Ridge,” “Hell or High Water,” “Hidden Figures,” “Lion,” “Manchester by the Sea,” and “Moonlight,” but was able to come out the winner which was presented by Dustin Hoffman.
The guild recognized the candy-colored musical with its Darryl F. Zanuck Award for theatrical motion picture production Saturday, a prize that often precedes the best picture Academy Award. (Last year was an exception, when “The Big Short” won the guild award, while “Spotlight” got the Oscar.) The nominees for the guild’s top film prize echo Oscars’ best picture nominees this year, with the exception of “Deadpool,” which made the cut with producers but not the film academy.
But the guild’s celebration at the Beverly Hilton Hotel of the year’s outstanding film and television productions had a decidedly political tone, as President Donald Trump’s ban on refugees and visitors from several Muslim countries triggered protests in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Seattle and other cities.
“Our America is big, it is free, and it is open to dreamers of all races, all countries, all religions,” singer John Legend said as he introduced “La La Land” at Saturday’s untelevised ceremony. “Our vision of America is directly antithetical to that of President Trump. I want to specifically, tonight, reject his vision and affirm America has to be better than that.”
Ezra Edelman, producer and director of “O.J.: Made in America,” which claimed the guild’s documentary prize, echoed Legend’s sentiments.
“Please keep telling stories that are about our humanity,” he said.
Other winners Saturday included “Zootopia” for animated feature, “Atlanta” for episodic television comedy and “Stranger Things” for episodic TV drama.
Presenters included Justin Timberlake, Octavia Spencer, Taraji P. Henson, Nicole Kidman, Jeff Bridges, Kerry Washington, Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese. Veteran producers James L. Brooks, Tom Rothman and Irwin Winkler received special awards.
Dustin Hoffman presented the night’s top prize. As producer Marc Platt accepted for “La La Land,” he said, “The power of cinema cannot be denied and has no borders … We must believe love can change our lives, much as it can change the world.”

18ft Skiffs Spring Championship
Aron Everett, Courtney Mahar and Charlie Gundy gave a faultless performance in Quality Marine Clothing to take out race three of the Australian 18 Footers League Spring Championship on Sydney Harbour today.
Skippering an 18ft Skiff for only the third time, Everett and his team led at every round mark before cruising to a 40s victory over Noakesailing (Sean Langman, Peter Langman, Rhys Mara).
Third placing went to The Kitchen Maker (Stephen Quigley, Tom Quigley, Sam Elis), which finished a further 39s behind Noakesailing.
Only 15s separated the next five boats.
Triple M (James Ward) finished fourth, followed by Appliancesonline.com.au (Brett Van Munster), Peroni (Nick Daly), Coopers-Rag and Famish Hotel (Bryce Edwards) and Smeg (Euan McNicopl).
Coopers-Rag and Famish Hotel heads the pointscores at the halfway point of the championship with a total of 15 points.
Today’s winner Quality Marine Clothing is next on 16, Yandoo (John Winning) on 16, Triple M on 20, Finport Trade Finance (Keagan York) 20 and Panasonic Lumix (Jordan Girdis) on 21.
For the third consecutive week, the fleet had to battle less than favourable wind conditions which makes life difficult for the crews.
The 5-8 knot easterly wind produced a great windward contest on the long leg from the start off Robertson Point to the three-buoys windward mark in Rose Bay.
Asko Appliances (James Dorron), Triple M and Panasonic Lumix led the fleet for most of the journey but Everett’s Quality Marine Clothing grabbed the top spot just ahead of Coopers-Rag and Famish Hotel and Panasonic Lumix.

When the chasers sailed too close to the shoreline, Quality Marine Clothing opened up a clead lead to the wing mark off Clark Island and back to the bottom mark at Kurraba Point.
Conditions on the two spinnaker runs were totally unpredictable and placing changed dramatically throughout the entire fleet.
As the fleet began the second of the three windward legs to Rose Bay, Quality Marine Clothing held a 1m30s lead over Sean Landman’s Noakesailing, The Kitchen Maker, Peroni, Yandoo and Asko Appliances.
Despite the inexperience of Aron Everett as a 18ft Skiff skipper, he led the team to perfection under the increasing pressure of the more experienced Langman.
Noakesailing reduced the lead back to 20s at Rose Bay, but the Quality Marine Clothing skiff was producing great downwind speed to get the margin back to1m30s at the end of the second lap.
Today’s Result Sheet and ten images are attached.
Race 4 of the Spring Championship will be sailed next Sunday, 29 October. The Australian 18 Footers League’s Spectator Ferry will follow all the action, leaving Double Bay Public Wharf at 2.15pm.

Autumn internationals: Home nations begin build-up to World Cup

Autumn internationals: Home nations begin build-up to World Cup
England coach Eddie Jones’s future could hang in the balance if his side underwhelm in November
England’s match against South Africa on Saturday is the highlight of the first round of autumn internationals as the home nations start the build-up to next year’s World Cup.
Coach Eddie Jones’ men have won only one match in seven, and face a side who beat them in this summer’s series and who went on to defeat New Zealand.
Scotland face Wales at the Principality Stadium – a match you can watch live on BBC One – and Ireland play Italy.
“It will be a proper Test on Saturday,” said Wales coach Warren Gatland.
England v South Africa, Twickenham
Venue: Twickenham Date: Saturday, 3 November Kick-off: 15:00 GMT Coverage: Live commentary on BBC Radio 5 live, the BBC Sport website and app; watch highlights on BBC Two, BBC iPlayer and online from 19:30 GMT.
England’s strength-in-depth, or lack of it, will be put to the test on Saturday by the Springboks, who won the summer series between them 2-1.
Jones is without several England regulars, including Mako and Billy Vunipola, Chris Robshaw, Joe Launchbury and Courtney Lawes, who are all injured.
The Australian was counting on in-form back Manu Tuilagi being available, but the Leicester player was injured in training, freeing up a spot on the bench for Sale’s Chris Ashton – back in the matchday squad for the first time in four years.
Inspired to try rugby union?
Find out how to get into rugby union with our special guide.
“Against South Africa you have got the physical battle up front and then you have to be tactically smart in how you attack against them,” said Jones.
“We need to find ways to gain momentum, then once we find momentum, convert that to points.”
England will have to contend with a strong Springbok pack. Their coach Rassie Erasmus said: “Jones knows our players and playing style. We’ve played [England] in June, it’s only four or five months down the track. So we are used to one another, these two teams.”
England face Rugby Championship winners New Zealand the following weekend, followed by World Cup hosts Japan on 17 November and Australia on 24 November.
Former England centre Jeremy Guscott: If they were to lose to all three of the southern hemisphere big beasts, but produce really good performances and lose with narrow points margins, then there is not masses to be concerned about.
England would be close to beating those sides, with another 10 months to fine-tune and close the gap before Japan 2019.
If England get hammered though and the performances are diabolical, there will be huge ramifications.
England will have gone backwards and that falls on Eddie and his team not doing a great job either coaching or selecting.
Wales v Scotland, Principality Stadium
Venue: Principality Stadium, Cardiff Date: Saturday, 3 November Kick-off: 14:45 GMT Coverage: Live on BBC One, S4C, BBC Radio Wales, Radio Cymru, the BBC Sport website and app.
Luke Morgan excited by Wales chance
Scotland will be hoping to record their first win in Wales since 2002 when they meet in Cardiff on Saturday in the Doddie Weir Cup. The Welsh have also defeated their opponents in 14 of the past 16 meetings – home and away.
“As always we expect a very tough Test match against Wales in Cardiff – a contest that will be physically and technically demanding in a noisy arena,” said Scotland coach Gregor Townsend, whose side lost 34-7 on their last trip to the stadium in the Six Nations in February.
Only four Scotland players retain their place from their win over Argentina in June, with fly-half Adam Hastings, son of former Scotland international Gavin, earning a third start.
Doddie Weir excited about cup in his honour
Wales’ Northampton fly-half Dan Biggar is unavailable this weekend as the game falls outside World Rugby’s autumn Test window and coach Warren Gatland cannot pick players from the English Premiership.
Wales’ record sevens try-scorer Luke Morgan will make his international XV-a-side debut, and is joined by seven returning British and Irish Lions, including centre Jonathan Davies following a 12-month injury absence.
“We are not going out there to play festival rugby. We want to play attractive rugby but smart and winning rugby,” said Gatland.
“It is going to be tough, physical encounter.”
Ireland v Italy, Soldier Field, Chicago
Fly-half Joey Carbery will make only his fourth start for Ireland
Venue: Soldier Field, Chicago Date: Saturday, 3 November Time: 20:00 GMT Coverage: Live text commentary on BBC Sport website.
Six Nations champions Ireland will be revisiting Soldier Field in Chicago – the venue of their 2016 win over New Zealand – for their encounter over Six Nations rivals Italy.
Coach Joe Schmidt has rested several of his first-team regulars such as Johnny Sexton, Rory Best, Keith Earls and Peter O’Mahony before they embark on three matches in Dublin, including a contest against world champions the All Blacks on 17 November.
Only five members of the starting XV from Ireland’s series win over Australia this year have been selected.
Munster’s Joey Carbery gets a rare start at fly-half. Schmidt said: “His running game is a strength as is his work ethic, so that’s always a good starting point.”
And what about the world champions…?
New Zealand play Japan in Tokyo on Saturday before they face England, Ireland and then Italy on successive weekends.
Many of coach Steve Hansen’s first-choice players have already headed to Europe to prepare for the forthcoming Tests, as he named a completely changed side from the one that defeated Australia last week.
Hansen said: “While this is a relatively inexperienced group, the expectation is that when you pull on the black jersey, then a top performance is required.”
World Rugby Player of the Year nominees Beauden Barrett and Rieko Ioane are both rested for the Japan game but will feature in the matches in Europe.

Dye, 'Docs and Devilocks' - 80s Punk fashion
Photos in gallery are by Dod Morrison and Richard Nixon Leg warmers. Neon. Perms. What do all these things have in common? You guessed it…..the 80s! Whilst 1970s punk style sought to create shock and awe, 1980s consumerism meant that more products than ever were available to those wishing to customise their style. As a result, fashion went all over the place as the once (relatively) unified punk scene splintered into a thousand shards, all with their own key looks. Fashion in the 80s was more colourful than its 70s counterpart with a much wider range of garments available and as a result, there was no end to the mash ups, matches and messes that could be created! The 1980s was undoubtedly a decade of tumultuous politics and regrettable fashion choices but beneath the stereotype of shoulder pads and tracksuits there were innovative and bold fashion movements that either sat comfortably within punk itself or certainly borrowed from it. Here are some of the most dominant looks. Mohawks and ‘charged hair’- Whilst 70s punk took a generally more austere approach to hair (favouring short cuts on both men and women) the 80s allowed a bit more room for manoeuvre for both sexes. Long hair just whimsically floating past your shoulders may have been a bit too hippy even in the 80s, so something had to be done to style rogue strands. And so, styles like the mohawk and ‘charged hair’ (when all your hair stands on end like you’ve been electrocuted) became popular- keep it short on the sides but build up instead of out with the rest of it. As you can gather from its name, the mohawk is a traditional Native American hairstyle and as such has been around for a long time amongst traditional tribes. Whilst the 80s punk scene helped bring the style onto the UK streets, this was not the first time the Western world had borrowed the look. American GIs wore the style in the Second World War to intimidate enemy combatants and the style was also popular amongst fringe Jazz musicians in the 1950s. Devilocks were also popular in the US thanks to Horror punk bands such as the Misfits. A devilock is one long, flat spike pulled down over the face. This was particularly popular amongst American skateboarders and Glenn Danzig of The Misfits has stated in interviews that he was inspired to don his version of it by Eddie Munster, thus cementing the bands commitment to horror references. Boots: Combat, military and Dr Martens were the most common boot choice in 80s punk, for both men and women. The brand Dr Martens has been a staple of almost every major youth movement in the UK since they were first introduced here in 1960 (the company had been going since 1947 in Germany and other parts of the world but the Northamptonshire factory where they are still made was opened in 1960). Skinheads, punks, grunge, goth…..all have been known to ‘don a Doc’ which is a testament to how versatile and enduring the design is. Crust punk: Not the most appetizing of names for this cohort of punks but that’s the term given to those in this punk/folk fusion. Crust punk has many of the hallmarks that are associated with the general punk look and some of these aspects are still pretty popular today, particularly with the resurgence of environmental activism. Crust punk originated in the UK (widely cited as being Bristol specifically) but still has very strong followers in the US, particularly in New York. Crust punks sported a dishevelled look that sought to communicate their anti-capitalist, pro-environment and animal rights agenda. To that end, many of their clothes were made from materials that were ethically sourced (before that was such a widespread thing) such as hemp or faux leather, with hair fashioned into dreadlocks negating the need to waste water by frequently washing it. Look to bands like Disorder, Lunatic Fringe and even Chumbawumba for a bit of crusty goodness. Goth: Goth was the exception to the garish dandy look of some 80s subcultures with a colour palette that was decidedly dark. Whilst describing Goth as simply black is obviously incredibly simplistic, it’s also not a bad place to start. It’s been 30+ years since Goth first appeared as a popular fashion movement in the UK and yet you would be hard pressed to find one town/village/street corner in the UK that doesn’t have at least one teenage Goth hovering round it. By 1981, the New Wave, erm……….wave(?) had started to take over where punk was tapering off. New Wave fashion was considered by some to be a bit fancy- ruffled shirts; floppy hair and colourful make up and accessories- so some sought to find their own niche that was far removed from this frivolity. Goth subculture focused (at least aesthetically) on the morbid, the grotesque and the……black. If you hung around original UK Goth club The Batcave in London’s Dean Street, you would have spotted all the ingredients that make up a classic Goth look- mesh and lace, dyed black hair, Christian paraphernalia (think crosses, rosary beads etc); velvet; pale face and black make up. Leather jackets were also popular in this look creating a cultural bridge to the punks who were sporting the garment at the same time. Sexiness was accepted- corsets and fishnets were juxtaposed with occult imagery to create a jarring subversion of traditional feminine sex appeal. Goth took off like a rabid crow on both sides of the Atlantic and the look was adhered to by fans of many different genres of music such as punk; metal; indie, deathrock and Horror punk. Dressed down hardcore: On the complete opposite end of the spectrum looks-wise from the overtly adorned crust punks and elaborately coiffured New-Wavers, you had the basic look of the American 80s hardcore scene. Jeans, basic t-shirts, short hair and hooded sweatshirts were the building blocks of this look. Looking ultra-casual was multi-purpose: it was anti-fashion in the truest sense of the word; it was low maintenance, so anyone could afford it and also provided comfort during all the ultra-hectic early hardcore shows. That early scene became known for the level of violence at gigs and when brawling in the pit you may soon find rubber pants and a 2-foot mohawk more of a hindrance than a help. The ethos of the early hardcore scene was a rejection of anything seen as bourgeois or pretentious and so bands like Black Flag, Descendants and Circle Jerks made a conscious decision to separate themselves from the UK punk scene. Tartan: Look up 80s punk fancy dress costumes and you are likely to find some element of tartan incorporated into it, such is the connection between the two. And it’s true, tartan was a big part of 80s punk and new wave fashion. The utility of wearing tartan was to signal ones’ discontent and rejection of the ruling class and authority as tartan (until that point) was heavily associated with military pomp and ceremony, thus punks wearing it was a subversion. Of course, it could also have been a rebuff of Scottish pop band Bay City Rollers. I guess we’ll never know. Tartan is still a key staple of the American pop punk look as is its close cousin Plaid. So, whilst the 1980s is often derided as the decade that style forgot, a lot of the trends mentioned above still endure to this day. For every dozen Flashdance fans in leg warmers and sweatbands, there were a mixture of Goths, New Romantics and patch emblazoned Crust punks all blazing a trail in identity fashion which made the UK a bit of a hub of key trends and creativity. Alas, these new looks were to face a challenge from the cultural revolution that came in the 1990s. Grunge, Riot Grrl and Pop Punk brought new brands, styles and attitudes such as skater wear; body painted slogans and Courtney Love's 'Kinderwhore' motif. Read our next feature to get the low down on those looks! Read the full article

The Burbs (1989)
(Once again republishing my old writings. This time a review of one of my favorite films of all time. Originally published at thesupernaughts.com on Sep 8, 2016)
The Burbs (1989) Director: Joe Dante Writer: Dana Olsen
“Remember what you were saying about people in the ‘burbs, Art, people like Skip, people who mow their lawn for the 800th time, and then SNAP? WELL, THAT’S US. IT’S NOT THEM, THAT’S US. WE’RE the ones who are vaulting over the fences, and peeking in through people’s windows. We’re the ones who are THROWING GARBAGE IN THE STREET, AND LIGHTING FIRES. WE’RE THE ONES WHO ARE ACTING SUSPICIOUS AND PARANOID, ART. WE’RE THE LUNATICS. US. IT’S NOT THEM. It’s us.”
I have been ruminating a long time about which film I’d be making a retro-review next; there are simply so goddamn MANY to choose from!
Then, earlier this week I ended up watching Joe Dante‘s latest film – “Burying the Ex” from 2014 – and I was kinda dumbstruck of how little of Dante’s personality there was left in that one. I mean – aside from some nods to old classic horror movies and cult films and a Dick Miller-cameo, there was NONE of the visual flair I’ve come to associate with a film directed by Joe Dante. None. I was actually pretty shocked by this. I mean – it’s no secret that Dante has worked VERY sparsely in the 21st century; in fact the list of projects he has tried to get made but have fallen apart in the course of the last 16 years is probably as long as his filmography. If not even longer.
So with that in mind I thought “well, isn’t this the perfect time to blow off some dust from over what I believe is the man’s best movie?” Because I sincerely believe it IS. I’ll give my reasons why I believe so later on. First – let’s look at just how “The ‘burbs” came to be, and how it ended up in the hands of Dante in the first place.
“The ‘burbs” began it’s life as a script called “Life in the ‘Burbs“. Screenwriter Dana Olsen based a lot of it on his childhood experiences of living in a suburb not that different what ended up in the film itself; in fact the story of “Skip the Soda Guy” that the character Art tells in the film is very loosely based on a real story about an axe murder in the 30’s, which was still being passed on from generation to generation to the kids in Olsen’s neighborhood. And his neighborhood had “it’s share of psychos” as he says – the essence of some of them ended up in the script – and as he said “As a kid, it was fascinating to think that Mr. Flanagan down the street could turn out to be Jack the Ripper.” So Olsen wrote the script on spec and passed it around, and very quickly it got the interest of Imagine Entertainment – a fairly new company started by Brian Grazer and Ron Howard in 1986. And due to it’s combination of comedy and horror, Grazer thought the the perfect man to direct this would be Joe Dante.
And Dante responded very strongly to the script, as it presented great opportunities for him to use some of his very specific skills as a director; inserting outrageous elements into a realistic environment; much like in “Gremlins” where a peaceful little postcard town suddenly gets overrun by raving supernatural creatures. But “The ‘burbs” was an opportunity to make a more grounded story. Tom Hanks – who was at the time slowly moving away from his more plainly comedic roles into more serious character parts – was pretty much the only choice Dante and the producers had as Ray Peterson, the everyman lead. And Hanks was quickly drawn in as well, after some hesitation about playing a father for the first time on screen. The rest of the cast soon followed; Carrie Fisher, Bruce Dern, Rick DuCommun, Corey Feldman, Wendy Schaal, Henry Gibson as well as Dante’s regular stock company Robert Picardo and Dick Miller. The filming took place mostly in the Universal backlot street-set, which had previously been featured in many movies and TV-shows; in fact, the home of Ricky Butler(Corey Feldman) was the Munster Mansion from “The Munsters” – and the whole street would later be very prominently featured as Wisteria Lane in “Desperate Housewives“.
So, a short recap of the story of “The ‘burbs” in case someone is unfamiliar with the film:
Mayfield Place, a street in a fictional suburb of Hinkley Hills; Ray Peterson, a somewhat tight-wound father and suburbanite, wakes up in the middle of the night to strange noises. They come from the basement of his next door house, recently occupied by a family called the Klopeks. Along with the noises of some ungodly equipment, we also see unnaturally bright lights emerge from the basement windows. Something’s fishy in the neighborhood. We meet the various other neighbors on the street: Ray’s wife Carol(Carrie Fisher) and son Dave(Cory Danziger), Art Weingartner(Rick Ducommun) – a paranoid summer-widower, Lt. Mark Rumsfield(Bruce Dern) – a shady retired military man and his slightly ditzy wife Bonnie(Wendy Schaal), Ricky Butler – a metal-head teenager who’s charged with painting the house while his parents are apparently away for the summer and Walter Seznick(Gale Gordon) – an older gentleman who keeps his lawn in pristine condition while letting his dog take a crap on Rumsfield’s.
After Walter suddenly disappears, Ray – who is on vacation and massively bored – gets further and further entangled into Art’s and Rumsfield’s crazy conspiracy theory that the Klopeks; Werner(Henry Gibson), Hans(Courtney Gains) and Reuben(Brother Theodore) are in fact a family of serial killers moving from town to town. As the mass hysteria builds, the trio of “heroes” try to get to the bottom of the bizarre family’ life – and in their house – by any means necessary. And to find the body of the missing Walter. MUCH chaos ensues…
Now to get back to my initial claim on WHY “The ‘burbs” is Joe Dante’s best film I felt that it would be best to address it with a small list of points:
CLEVER SCRIPT, BALANCED DIRECTING
This is a big one. What comes fairly obvious when looking at Dante’s filmography is that he is a filmmaker who is clearly wearing his cinematic influences in his sleeve; at times he can go into this “throw in everything AND the kitchen sink too“-mode, which is probably the most evident in “Gremlins 2: the New Batch” and “Matinee“. I’m not saying those are bad films, not at all – they just feel slightly uneven when more dramatic scenes get outweighed by chaotic Looney Tunes-like set pieces. “The ‘burbs” is probably the most grounded of all the movies he has made. There is no science fiction. There is no supernatural horror(except in a few dream sequences). The protagonists are human – the antagonists are human. Although the brilliance of the script is that the line between who REALLY is the protagonist/antagonist is very thin – right up until the end of the final act. It’s actually a very clever story point: you can very well say that Ray, Art and Rumsfield are for the most part the villains of the movie, as they show some very clear nearly-psychopathic tendencies as they become more and more obsessed with these “weirdos” that have invaded their neighborhood. In a very clever way writer Olsen and Dante show just how evil humans can get and how easily they can turn on each other. I think that can all be transferred very easily into what’s going on in real life even as we speak, as almost every day the newsfeeds are filled with more and more news of man turning against the fellow man.
And Dante shows extraordinary restraint in his direction here as well. Sure, there are occasions where he goes into his more cartoony mode, but most of the time the story is told in very simple ways, like very long, sweeping camera shots going around the set and cover multiple characters doing their thing. I’d say Dante is paying a lot of homage to Hitchcock’s “Rear Window” in the way the neighborhood is constantly shown to go on with it’s life in the background of all this madness. And when it’s time to go crazy, Dante does not linger with his visual gags; for example in a scene where Art falls through the roof of a garden shed, you can see that he has left a human-shaped hole in the roof. THAT’S the Looney Tunes-Dante, but he does not linger on it; it’s there to be seen but it does not stay and wait for a studio-audience laughter. The same goes for a scene where Ray has momentarily given up on the conspiracy theory and just tries to relax on his yard and have a few beers. There’s a very long sequence where Ray and Art are speaking in the foreground and at the same time we can see Walter’s dog digging for something in the background…and the scene goes on for a LONG time until we are finally revealed that the dog has dug up a human femur bone. And only THEN does Dante go for broke again, as the camera starts snap-zooming while the characters scream in horror.
Like I said: balanced.
BRILLIANT CASTING
As said before, Tom Hanks was kinda moving away from the wacky comedy parts at this point. Which was definitely a good thing: I personally think that in his comedy performances of the early/mid-80’s he was very quickly starting to repeat himself. I’ll give an example: I re-watched “Bachelor Party” a few years ago and; while it was quite fun to watch as a teenager, I think the “likeable manchild”-character that Hanks played in that one, as well as in most of his other movies of that era was ABSOLUTELY ANNOYING. So the character of Ray, who really is the plain everyman, is – and was – such a welcome departure. Sure, the character becomes more and more crazy during the course of the movie, but never over the top – and still remains very relate-able. The “over the top” is reserved for the two true MVP’s of the picture: Bruce Dern and Rick Ducommun.
Dern, who had already at this point had a long career playing dramatic parts and villains in more westerns than there’s time to list here, shows some unbelievable skills at comedy: both verbal and moreso, physical. Rumsfield(obviously an not-so-subtle homage to Donald Rumsfeld) basically treats the whole thing as a military operation, and has access to some pretty sophisticated surveillance equipment as well as weapons(there’s a small hint in the movie that he is in fact a weapons-dealer, and Olsen confirms this in his commentary), but he is also a clumsy idiot, and completely devoid of any real social skills. Meanwhile, Ducommun’s Art is just a stir-crazy conspiracy theorist who very clearly is watching too many sensationalist news-reports on TV. He is a guy you do NOT want to invite to your home, because you will never get rid of him after that. It’s almost impossible to decide who ends up stealing the movie: Dern or Ducommun – so I’ll just say both.
The Klopeks were without a doubt cast with physical attributes in mind, but the actors bring a lot to the table; be it Henry Gibson‘s sort of calm benevolence with some darkness appearing under the seams to Brother Theodore‘s blatant outrageousness to Courtney Gains‘ mostly non-verbal presence. Carrie Fisher probably has the most difficult part in the movie as the sole voice of reason, but her very clear chemistry with Hanks speaks volumes. Corey Feldman has probably the most one-dimensional part in the movie as the cliched “airhead loudmouth teenager“- it’s pretty much “Mouth” from “Goonies” a little bit older – but in a way he’s also representing the audience as he demonstrates that he doesn’t have to watch TV or go to the movies when all the excitement and action is right there outside his porch. The Dante-regulars Robert Picardo and Dick Miller have a very amusing walk-in as two garbage men – as a matter of fact, their short scene almost makes one wish they had made a sitcom of these two characters.
THE SCORE
I think I’ve said this before on an article about film scores; I think Jerry Goldsmith found a perfect cinematic partner in Joe Dante. The score he made for “The ‘burbs” gives him an exceptionally wide range of styles to play with: you have your mystery music to represent the Klopeks, you have your “happy neighborhood” music to represent the suburbian life, you have your dramatic music to represent the family tension as Ray gets deeper into his obsession, you have horror music for a nightmare satanic sacrificial sequence, you have the theme from “Patton” whenever Rumsfield is featured, and you have the sort of Looney Tunes-music when Art does something crazy. It really is chaotic masterpiece of film scoring and I can imagine the late composer just laughing like a schoolboy when he was writing this stuff.

CONCLUSION:
So, that’s why I feel this movie is Dante’s finest work. But don’t take my word for it; check it out yourself. There is a wonderful UK special edition Blu-Ray by Arrow Films out there, which includes a few alternate endings (the ending of the movie was apparently a bit of a problem for the filmmakers, as the original was too dark. And they filmed several versions until ending up with the one that is in it now. And after seeing the alternatives, I think they made the right call) as well as a Workprint version of the movie that has a few added scenes, some alternate scenes and a temporary music score which features a huge amount of spaghetti western-music – including the one track that’s actually left in the film, which can be heard when Hans Klopek makes his first appearance.
I’m not sure if Shout! Factory is planning a US release of this, but there’s a bare-bones Blu-Ray release out there as well. Just a friendly hint to any of you who might’ve missed this movie until now.
It really hasn’t aged at all, it’s a perfect mix of thriller and comedy, with some very clever satire on the ingrown living habitats and their effect on people – and it has something very poignant to say about the human nature even now.
Of course, the theatrical trailer at the time was just trying to sell it as another zany Tom Hanks-comedy:

Murder, She Wrote
