i started getting into older movies this year and since following you i've been intrigued by your ronald coleman posting 👀 so if you had to recommend one of his movies for someone who hasn't seen any, which one would you recommend and why?

I'm thrilled that you're interested and that you'd ask me!

This is actually not the easiest question because the Ronald Colman films that are, in my opinion, the best are quite different from each other? If I had to recommend a film of his to someone I know I think it would really depend upon the person what I'd recommend.

As I don't know your taste in film, I guess I'll give you two quite different options so you can choose which appeals to you more? I hope that's all right!

The Prisoner of Zenda (1937) is a fun adventure film in which Ronald Colman plays the hero. It has a little less action and a bit more intrigue than other adventure films of the time, but it's certainly no less enjoyable! I think it's a good introduction because Ronnie does a bit of everything here; action, comedy, romance, drama.

Random Harvest (1942) is a romantic drama in which Ronald Colman gives one of his absolute best performances, so it's a good introduction to his acting work. Some of the plot points of this film, which has often been called a classic melodrama, are quite improbable, but if you're willing to let the film sweep you along, it's truly one of the most beautiful and romantic stories ever in my opinion!

I know both of these films aren't for everyone which is why I thought I would give you options. I deeply love both of them though and I would love to know what you think if you end up watching one of them!

Currently watching: extra ordinary. I watch one episode every other week and then forget about it's existence.

Currently reading: Rainwild chronicles, book 3. It's a slow process due to many activities and Baldur's Gate 3. Also I'm much less invested in these books that I was in the Farseer trilogy and the Tawny man trilogy, cuz there's no Fitz and Beloved. And there's a shit load of characters, no sea, no pirates, only dragons and elderlings, so my interest wasn't peaked to begin with.

Current obsession: Fitz and Beloved, duh (they're gonna be with me for a while). And also Baldur's Gate 3 (this one's probably forever). And theater, dramaturgy specifically (no idea how long I'm gonna be stuck with this one, but I'm hoping for a long time).

okay!!!!!! okay!!!!! hear me out on this one!! this fic is wonderful. i’m a sucker for fics dealing with edward’s suffering during the worst of crozier’s captaincy, and this one is so good. blanky is so wonderful in this; i feel like his tender, kind side frequently gets overlooked in favor of his bigger, bolder attributes, and this fic truly delivers on everything i’ve been missing! it’s really gentle and sweet and i urge you to give it a read!!!!

this piece is so good!! it has some really beautiful (sad) foreshadowing of the franklin expedition, and is just... so soft, with some wonderful romantic tension!! and it’s funny! darwin and fitzroy are wonderful in this, and i’m always here for fic that deals with peglar learning to read (which this does!!!).

on beechey island, fitzjames reveals clio’s cheetah to the men. or... something like it! this piece is really a blast; fitzjames is in rare form, francis is glaring form the sidelines, and le vesconte is an absolute champ. and the ending is wonderfully witty and racy!

this is incredibly fun!!! just some good, wholesome fic about boys dressing up their favorite lady. 10000/10 would recommend.

wwii au. edward is a squadron leader in the royal air force, and jopson is a corporal working for group captain crozier. i’m weak for wwi and wwii aus to begin with, and this one is done beautifully. while it doesn’t hand-wave the trauma and heartbreak of war, it doesn’t hit you over the head with it either, and the result is a really soft, bittersweet, hopeful piece.

this piece is!!! beautiful!!! very poignant, and really had me feeling for solomon. i love what’s been done with the soulmark conceit—it’s not just a simple “we have soulmarks, we’re soulmates!!!’ au (which i’ll admit to enjoying too), but a really thoughtful take on the trope. the slow way tozer puzzles everything out is wonderful, and i love the glimpses we get into several of his friendships & relationships.

since the plot is kinda simple (nothing wrong with that, it still hold the suspense well) this movie really delivers on the different characters. tarlenheim and zapt are both great and i have to say rupert really steals the show. he is such a cunty evil bitch (complimentary). they should have made a sequel based on the next book that is named after him, apparently.

this is definitely a movie that i will in turn recommend to anyone who cares to listen. i have unfortunately noticed that it's kind of hard to drag people into my obsession with older movies and their actors that i have developed this year. to be fair, i got into it because of the hot vintage men poll but it somehow stuck and has opened up a whole new world to me. and i'm glad that i found your blog because this was a movie that wasn't at all on my watchlist before and i totally would have missed!

Yes, this film has such a fun cast of characters! I wouldn't go so far as saying Rupert steals the show when Ronald Colman is right there, but they're pretty well-matched! I absolutely love him and Fairbanks Jr's performance!

Surprisingly, I don't think he has a much larger role in the sequel compared to this, really. Nonetheless I do wish they'd made a sequel! Apparently they were planning to but then the producer got busy with Gone with the Wind and dropped the idea. I will always mourn that decision because Rupert of Hentzau is such a fascinating story and if they'd kept the cast and the quality of the writing and production, I'm sure it would've made a great film!

That's great to hear, I really want more people to know about it. I'm sorry that has been your experience! Unfortunately most people don't seem to be very open towards classic film. It's a shame, because it is indeed a whole new world opening up before you! I remember how I felt, getting into classic film, and honestly still do. Yes, Ronnie's films don't seem to be on anyone's radar much, which naturally I find very sad! I'm doing my best to change that though!

As you liked The Prisoner of Zenda, I'd really recommend If I Were King (1938)! It's another adventure film starring Ronnie, much sillier, but so much fun! You can find it on YouTube :)
