Yes, huckleberry boy, there's this old country song I listened to once like almost 15 years ago (bro I was just a little guy wild lol) called huckleberry by Toby Kieth I think, and he goes "I'll be your huckleberry" and I'll die with HC that loverboy would absolutely sing old obscure country/ballads. Hi! If you don't mind could you write me some headcanons about being bff with some female cp's? Like Jane, Nina, Clockwork, Nurse Ann...?
One of my best friends is called one of these names so it was odd to write XD Some headcanon’s were totally true about her as well, and some definitely were n o t. XD
Anyway I’m not sure how comprehensive this is since I just kinda spewed it all out so, uh… I hope you like them! 😅
~~~
Clockwork:
· Natalie stays at your house all the time and eats all your food. Girl has a FAST metabolism so you cannot tell, but she eats e v e r y t h i n g.
· She doesn’t even have a key to your home, you just come home from everyday activities and she’s slumped in your couch cushions watching TV and there’s a pool on your bathroom floor from her shower and- oh, she has also ordered pizza so get your wallet out.
· You just squint/glare at her before flopping on the couch beside her. She hands you the remote and gets comfier by you.
· Even when you have a romantic interest over, she is there at your house, comfortable on the couch playing games on your phone as you walk your ‘friend’ to your room.
· It’s not all frustrating though, she’s always there to protect you. There have been multiple burglaries that she has intercepted and ‘taken care of’. She’s honestly like a guard dog who also has an excellent sense of humour.
· And don’t think she just wants you around for your apartment and money. Nay nayyyyyy nay. She tells you all about the Creepypasta drama and what’s going on at the mansion, even though you aren’t apart of that life.
· And she calls when she’s away. Just calls up to talk to you.
· You two are the kind of friends that don’t need to talk to each other all the time. In fact, you agree that talking to people all the time is annoying and too much trouble, and you could totally go without each other for days (Weeks even) if either of you were busy! But… without either of you even realising, you always end up contacting each other in one way or another every day, anyway. Its easy with you two. No romantic relationship could compare.
· She was the groom and you were the bride in your make-believe weddings and mums and dads games as kids.
· On Toby: “Okay Nat, I like Toby but I hope you know, if he hurts you… well there is absolutely nothing I can do to wreak revenge on your behalf, as he is a duo hatchet wielding psychopath, except maybe give him a stink eye. … When he is looking away and therefore cannot see the stink eye.”
· More on the Toby subject: Clockwork once took you to Slender Mansion (Cuz you were targeted by a botched victim of hers because she cares about you and she wanted you close by to keep you safe until she could, like, finish killing the guy and all. Whatever though, no biggie. Pft, At least that’s how she made it out to be.) and she had to leave you for a moment so she handcuffed you and Toby together because he’s the only one she could trust to watch you.
· It was very awkward for the two of you, but definitely a bonding experience. You were both very happy to see Clocky come back though.
· HORROR. The world of horror is your favourite genre together. Supernatural horror, slashers, basement dwellers, vampires, werewolves, the blob, stalkers, murderers, psychological horror, black and white, colour, movies, tv shows, books- whatever. You two get so excited to experience new fictional horror.
Jane The Killer:
· If you’re into boys, let me tell you right away- Jane is very critical of their actions. She was at a very influential time in her life (Especially concerning boys and girls and romance) when she met Jeff and Liu. She met those boys, thought ‘Oh, they’re cute. Maybe budding crush?’, and then Jeff killed her family, burnt down her home and ruined her life and Liu became an asshole, and now the male species has been, sorta… tainted. She knows there are good ones (In fact, m a n y boys are lovely, of course.), but one’s that you’re in romantic cahoots with are always going to be under her very watchful eye anyway so she doesn’t really bother to hold back her fear (Which translates into dislike… or hate) with them. So if you have boy problems, be careful. Provided you like this/these guy/s, at least. If you don’t like them, then she’s the perfect person to go to!
· If you are a boy, then- of course, none of this applies to you. She loves you. Don’t worry. You’re her best friend!
· Girls are an entirely different situation though of course. Jane drinks that love women juice every single day.
· Jane is really good with altering clothes, so she’s the one you go to when you need help hemming something or taking something in. She likes to do it, too. Quality best friend time while not being lazy.
· Speaking of her hating to be lazy… This does not apply at night. Nighttime is a whole other ballgame. Its bedtime by 7 for her if you don’t lock her into plans a week in advance. If she is braless and in her P.J’s, you will not be able to peel her from her home. Except for snacks, but even if she goes to the grocery store, she’s not getting changed and she’s going to wear her bunny slippers.
· You two watch so many cartoons together. Gravity Falls, Star Vs The Forces of Evil, Over The Garden Hedge, Villainous, Looney Tunes, Ducktales, etc. Any and all that you can get your hands on.
· You two are prepared to get platonically married, for any reason. Like, you need to stay in the country? Married; You’re staying. You’re the only one who can testify against hr in the court of law? Married, so by law you don’t have to. One of you accidentally planted yourselves with a kid and (Cuz you’re ride or die for each other, obviously), you’re gonna parent the child together and cuz of religious beliefs one of your would feel better about raising them together with a wedding band? Married.
· Jane doesn’t drink, so when/if you get drunk she’s always there to keep you safe.
· Jane also gets friend-jealous, a lot. Like, that bitch just called you her best friend, Y/N. Is she your best friend? I thought I was. So who is it, Y/N? Me or her? HM? (She is prepared to turn up to wherever you and this person are hanging, all glamorous and cool as she is, and show off. Prove she’s a way better friend then this new person so they back off).
· When you were little, she was the bride and you were the groom in your wedding/marriage/mums and dads games.
Nina The Killer:
· You have known her for both your entire lives and there have been iffy, and dark times but through hell and high water you have stuck with her. You love her. She’s your girl, you are her person too. You will be with her, and protect her from anything.
· You are the only one in the world that loves her, really. You may not quite understand her weirdness, but you stick with her anyway because you love her.
· Just like- baseline of your friendship is being ride or die for each other.
· You were also really into Jeff, but at a more… healthy? Level? Like, you were still romantically interested in a real-life murderer, but you wouldn’t have done anything about it. You wouldn’t hurt anyone (Except to protect others) or victim blame, or contact the victims (Dear God) or whatever, but you would take peaks at fanfiction and gab with Nina about it. I mean, it’s not grand, but in comparison to Nina, hah… you were harmless.
· Now though, that you’ve met him and he is the reason your bets friend is so hurt and broken, you are not the fondest of him. I mean, you still have a place in your heart for the version of him you and Nina made up in your heads (The version that Nina still believes is real) but that isn’t the real him. Jeff Woods is an ass. You need to keep your friend safe from him.
· And uh… so nowadays… occasionally, you will find out where Jeff is (You keep an ear out) and, you know, just… lie your ass off to Nina. Yep. You tell her you heard that he’s in the opposite direction than he is so that she’ll unknowingly put more distance between him and her.
· Yes. It’s a lie, but… its for the greater good! It’s for Nina’s mental health and physical safety.
· Anyway, moving on to lighter things.
· In your make believe mums and dads/’grown up’ games that you would play together as kids, you were a single parent and she was the dog.
· She will lie for you in an instant. She’s also really good at it.
· You walked into a room once and saw she was drawing something, and it turned out to be your joint tombstone. She has not let this go- you will be buried in the same plot together, if it is the last thing she does. This is slightly concerning, but… also kind of cute. You can roll with it.
· “What if I get married or have kids?”
· “They will need to apply with me to join. There will be an interview process.”
· ‘What about pets?”
· “Oh, they can come in! No fee!”
· Do not underestimate her weight. If she doesn’t want you to leave, she will hold onto your leg and go deadweight, and you will s t r u g g l e.
· Nina talks to herself, but she acts like the person she’s talking to is another person, inside her mind. You both know its not, but you refer to the other girl as Agnes anyway. Super casual.
· Follows you when you go on dates (At least the first one with someone)to make sure all goes well and texts you rapid fire when she smells something fishy. Even the smallest thing.
· You two really love dystopian teen fiction. Divergent? Matched? Hunger Games? Maze Runner? Ugles? Alllllll. You consume them and then watch the movies/tv shows too.
Nurse Ann:
· Live-in medical services! This means you can get really cheap life insurance and not worry about it to much.
· And on the topic of insurance… Ann is super smart, and organised, and just really awesome at practical stuff like that. Insurance, bills, mortgages, any kind of forms and receipts. And she’s happy to sit down and help you go through it- and, as we all know, everything is better when it’s with a friend you feel comfortable with.
· You can tell Ann anything and she’ll just roll with it. No judgment. Either she takes it and lets you talk about it or she just acknowledges it and moves on.
· Like Jane, Ann has very little patience for boy problems. In fact, she has zero time for it. Boys? Girls? No thank you. So if you’re into boys, I have some bad news for you.
· Best friend maintenance. Occasionally, Ann will over work herself (with murder) and you will need to guide her to relaxation. Gently persuade her to sit down at the dinner table and just make idle chit chat with her every now and then as you make her a good, hearty meal (Or as good as you can do XD Anything between Beefy stew and a Cheese toastie will work fine, don’t worry. She’s not picky at all), and then watch some movies with her. No phones, no knitting, no drawing, no… whatever. No other activities except TV watching! She needs to rest. I’m always shocked at how relaxing just sitting and watching TV can be. There’s a big difference between doing that and multitasking.
· Ann will call you to pretend there’s an emergency if you want to get out of social engagement.
· A thing that two enjoy together is science fiction. Star Trek (Including the animation), The War of Worlds, the world of Star Wars, Dune, a Handmaids Tail, The 100, Eureka, etc. She loves the brainy stuff.
· Ann is the logical friend, who tries to give the most practical advice and make pros and con lists and everything. And then you go ahead and do the crazy thing, the thing she said definitely would not work and would probably make things worse, and she just face palms and says she’s never getting mixed up in your mess again. … Until the next time, when she totally does.
· “I love you Y/N, but I am not about to walk into a police office and bail you out of jail so do not do that.”
· You trap her into resting by painting her nails (Hands and feet) in her sleep right before her alarm is about to go off so she has to take the morning SLOW or the paint will mess up. She just wakes up, you hold up a sign in front of her face that says ‘NAILS’ and she stops immediately. “You bitch.”
· As kids, of course, the two of you would play make-believe family games and you were both mums (/ or you were the dad). She was the working mum and you were forced to stay home take care the baby (large container of vitamins with a face drawn on).
Keida I was at the tennis court today and someone was playing like the absolutely worst country music. I’m talking like Honky Tonk Badonkadonk, Save a Horse Ride a Cowboy, something by Toby Keith, like just the absolute worst and I really wish that Max was there to sing it in my ear just to annoy me cause he knows I hate it but I love him so I’ll just shake my head and roll my eyes but give him a kiss on the cheek and then he’d make fun of me for how bad I am at tennis and I just hhnnggghhrrr needed him there. Trying to imagine what playing tennis (or ping pong) with those hooligans would be like
pingpong/tenis with the boys is like that one vine where the little brother THROWS THE PADDEL AT THE BRO AND BOTH OF THEM START SCREAMING DHSJNS. so the sunburst boys would promptly be KICKED OUT
bUt OMFG THE TERRIBLE COUNTRY MUSIC I DIE SHSKSNSN
Ch.2: Here For Business (Colt x Mc)
Summary: He simply cannot get this girl out of his mind, good thing he sees her once again.
Author Note: I hope people find these stories someday <3 Part two of She’s Perfect. Next part here, Part one here
Book: Ride or Die: A Bad Boy Romance | Choices: Stories You Play (AU)
Pairing: Colt Kaneko x MC | Ellie Wheeler
Word Count: 2.2k
Rating: VERY N*FW (Sex, Swearing)
I have never been so distracted by the thoughts of a girl before. Not even in my adolescence, the idea of being tied down to one person always disturbed me. I’d never overthink a one night stand, I would leave first thing in the morning and never turn around. But she was messing with my head, she was ruining me. I was not weak, I was not vulnerable to anyone. Especially not her.
Everyone had noticed I was on edge lately, always bouncing my leg up and down anxiously. Toby wouldn’t leave me alone, no matter how many times I’d begged him to stop asking me questions. In fact, the whole crew took turns interrogating me ever since I came back from the meeting.
“Colt,” I heard a voice call for me when I got inside, I nearly jumped a bit in shock. I was home so late that I thought everyone would’ve been asleep already. Toby was holding a magazine with a cool looking car on the front. I didn’t bother to ask about it. I wanted to go into my room and yell into a pillow.
“Hey Toby,” I answered as I placed the case filled with cash on the table where he sat. I took a seat beside him, knowing that he would want to talk about the cars in the magazine. Honestly, a distraction was exactly what I needed.
“Check this out,” He began to flip the pages, he stopped at one and when he turned to look at me, his jaw dropped.
“Wait a minute, what is THAT?” He reached his hand to move the collar of my jacket, examining my neck. I grasped his thin wrist and pulled his hand away.
“Don’t even--”
“I thought you were in a meeting?” He asked, curiosity obvious in his voice. I nodded slowly, biting the inside of my cheek nervously, hoping he’d stop asking questions.
“Unless... OH MY GOD?!” Toby connected the dots and placed his hand over his mouth to contain himself from screaming.
“You hooked up with Wheeler’s daughter?!” He asked way too loudly, I was about to tell him to shut up before Mona came into the room.
“Wait a second, who did what now?” Her eyebrows were raised and her jaw was dropped, clearly in shock.
“Colt had sex with--”
“Jesus Christ, Toby! Shut up,” I groaned into my hands as I realized they would never let this go.
“If her dad finds out, you’re dead meat,” Mona explained as she shook her head sarcastically. I was silent, I had no idea she was his daughter.
“Fuck,” I breathed.
“I heard that her dad found out she was dating a member of another crew and scared the guy so bad that he moved across the country,” Toby explained to me enthusiastically, as if this was funny.
The one girl I ever showed interest in, the ONE person that I allow to roam through my mind... She just had to be the completely unattainable.
“Good luck with that,” Mona patted my shoulder as I groaned. She subtly moved my jacket over to examine my neck as Toby had.
“Hey!” I called out and pushed her hand away.
“Oh my. I never thought Colt, motherfucking, Kaneko would let a chick mark him up. Today is one wild day,” Mona teased as she laughed and left me alone with Toby.
“I’m outta here,” I stood up, waving at Toby and ignoring his pleads for details.
Since then, they haven’t let me live it down. Even Ximena knew what happened at this point, her reaction was even worse than Toby and Mona combined.
“You’re so grown up now,” She wiped a fake tear as she watched me walk into the room the next day.
“God dammit,” I muttered and attempted to ignore her cooing at me like a baby.
But even through all of this, I couldn’t help but wish to see her again. I was at the front desk again, doodling in my journal. It’s not a fucking diary, Toby.
I only found myself drawing her body over and over, although I had never seen her undressed... My imagination could do incredible things. Most of the sketches were of her leaning on her bike, arms crossed. Sometimes, I’d catch myself drawing her eyes on the paper, her long eyelashes curling up.
“Son,” Came a voice, making me jump awake, as if I was in a daze thinking about Ellie Wheeler. What the fuck was wrong with me lately?
“Are you drawing?” My dad asked and I roughly shut the notebook closed. I cleared my throat.
“No.”
“Alright then... The Wheelers have made a special request for our next deal,” He explained seriously, and I found myself lighten up at the news.
“What would that be?” I asked nonchalantly.
“You’re the only one who can do the deals. For some reason, the girl has a preference as to who she meets with. She chose you, son.”
She remembered to tell her dad. She remembered me and wants to see me again. My heart leaped at the idea of being with her. Gross.
“When will I be seeing her again?” I asked, trying my best to not sound excited.
“You sound eager to meet with her again,” He stated blankly.
“What? Of course not, I’m simply asking because--”
“I don’t need an explanation.”
I felt a bit saddened, but not surprised. My pops never wanted to hear me out.
“She’ll be here tonight, her dad wants her to check out some of the cars we have. They’ll be buying from us again for her birthday,” He grinned, enthused to receive another great amount of money. I could truly care less about the payment. I just wanted to see her.
“Alright,” I said, understanding. He patted my shoulder.
“Seems you were a good representative, good enough that she wanted to see you specifically. I’m proud of you, boy.”
Those were words I’ve never heard from him, even he was shocked by what he said. I gave him a nod and he walked out without another word. I was beyond happy at this moment, nothing could possibly kill my mood.
Until...
“Psst, Colt!” whispered a voice behind me that I recognized to be Toby.
“What?” I asked as I felt irritation enter my body.
“Ellie’s coming tonight, the crew is gonna head out to do... Stuff. This means you’ll be alone with her, you’re welcome,” He teased.
“Get out of my face right now,” I closed my eyes with anger as I realized the crew was trying to set me up with her.
“Logan will be here too, though. But I bet you can sneak away for a few moments without him noticing.”
“Out.”
At exactly eight, I heard a motorcycle outside the shop. My heart raced and I took a few breaths to calm myself down, why was I reacting like this? She’s just another girl I’ve been with. I got a grip and fixed my jacket. I heard footsteps approaching. Then... I saw her. All reasoning in my head had died off and I couldn’t help but smile. She was just as gorgeous as I remembered her. Except, I could see her features clearer with the lights of the shop.
“Excited to see me, Kaneko?”
“You’re punctual,” I managed to say after collecting myself, I sounded confident.
“What can I say? I would hate to waste time,” She smirked and looked around at the cars surrounding us.
“I was surprised to hear you wanted a car, I thought you loved your bike,” I asked as I walked closer to her.
“Well... I’ve decided to try new things,” She answered and went silent for a few moments, “Show me what you’ve got.”
“Alright,” I guided her over to the cars and she listened to me explain them.
“This is the fastest car we’ve got, a 2019--” I was saying but she groaned.
“You don’t care about the cars, do you?” I asked and brought myself to finally look into her eyes.
“God, of course not. There’s something I want more than a stupid car.”
My breath got caught in my throat, she surprised me constantly. Just as we were approaching each other, I heard footsteps.
“Is that the one and only Ellie Wheeler?” asked a voice that I immediately recognized. My fists clenched as I stared at the person I hated most in this world. Logan.
“Depends who’s asking,” She raised an eyebrow and crossed her arms as she looked at the intruder. Logan gave her a flirty smile and I wanted to knock him out cold, but I knew better than to do that.
“I’m Logan,” He took a few seconds before continuing, “I never thought I’d be so fortunate to see a girl like you in person.”
“Lucky you,” She flirted back and I felt myself fuming.
“Sorry to cut in, but I was just showing her the selection of cars. She’s here for business, not to hear you try and get in her pants,” I blurted out without meaning to. Logan’s eyebrows raised and I swear I heard Ellie chuckle.
“I could take it from here. I definitely know more about these cars than you do,” He suggested and Ellie responded quickly.
“No need, Colt is doing just fine.” With that said, Logan’s eyebrows lifted in shock once again.
“If you say so, gorgeous. I hope to have the luck to see you again soon,” He licked his lips and waved before leaving the room.
“Gosh, what a whore,” She sighed as he left. I couldn’t hold back a laugh at her words. She said exactly what I was thinking, “You’re wrong, though,” She continued.
“What?”
“I’m not here for car business,” She smirked smugly and wrapped her arms around my neck, slowly bringing my down to her level.
“The deal is still on, you owe me,” She breathed into my ear. Her lips trailed down to my neck and she pressed a soft kiss to it.
“You up for round two?” She asked and my breath hitched. I didn’t answer her, instead, I brought her lips to mine and kissed her roughly. She moaned into my mouth and I guided her onto the nearest desk, thankfully an empty one. I couldn’t wait any longer, I wanted to make this girl feel things that she had never felt. I wanted to hear my name rolling off her tongue as I pleased her in sinful ways.
At this point, I could care less about my own pleasure. I owed her and I was going to make her trip here worth it. I sucked on her neck, finding the spot that made her gasp and squirm on the desk under her. She was breathing heavily as I continued to trail my teeth.
“Colt,” She managed to say, her voice shaking.
“Yes?” I asked as I unbuttoned her blouse.
“Please,” a whisper so desperate, I wondered what she would do right now if I didn’t comply to her orders.
“Please what? What do you want me to do?” I pressed my lips onto her breasts kissing slowly, as I moved her bra aside to take a nipple into my mouth.
“Fuck,” She whimpered as I swirled my tongue around, “Please.”
“Say it, baby, and I’ll give it to you. Anything.”
“I want you to-- Oh my god,” Her eyes rolled back as I pressed a hand onto her pussy. Her chest heaved and she had tears forming.
“Fuck me, please, Colt.”
Those were all the words I needed to hear, I unbuttoned her shorts and pulled them down along with her underwear. I continued to lick my way down her body, pressing kisses every now and then. I finally reached eye level with her sweet opening.
Her hands made their way into my hair, tugging with need. I gave her one long lick and she hissed with pleasure, her legs shaking.
I continued to do my work, now focusing on her clit, my fingers positioning around her entrance. Once they were inside, she moaned loudly. Normally, I would’ve freaked out by her volume, but it was only Logan. I wanted him to hear her, I wanted him to witness the noises that I managed to get out of her.
I pumped my fingers in and out of her at a speed that made her pull my hair as she breathed heavily. I felt her walls tighten and I knew she was close. I continued to move my hand inside of her, but brought my lips up to kiss her. She kissed me like I was oxygen and she was suffocating. Her teeth sunk into my bottom lip and I knew she was done for. With one last push inside, she let out the hottest sigh I’ve ever heard. Her head fell onto my neck and she whispered my name over and over.
“You’re so good, baby,” I whispered into her ear as I felt all the power in her body give out, she was doing her best to ride down her orgasm. After a few minutes of silence as she caught her breath, she chuckled.
“I guess we’re even now.”
Twelfth-Night; or, What You Will -William Shakespeare
A1S1
In the dukes’ palace there’s the duke Orsino, Curio and other people, “If music be the food of love, play on; give me excess of it, that, surfeiting the appetite may sicken, and so die.”p.343 Curio asks if he will go hunt the hart and the Duke says when he saw Olivia he was turned into one and his desires are like hounds perused him. Valentine enters saying he wasn’t admitted as Olivia is in mourning for her father and brother. The duke wonders how she will love when she pays it all to her dead brother and it killed all other afflictions. (dude people are allowed to mourn how they want and are allowed to stay single as they want and your callous attitude isn’t winning you any points)
A1S2
At the sea coast there’s Viola, the captain and sailors, Viola asks what country they washed up on and the captain says Illyria and Viola wonders what she should do as her brother is in Elysium (basically Greek heaven) after drowning. The captain says there’s a chance and to assure herself when the ship split he saw her brother tie himself to the mast. She asks the captain if he knows the country, he was born and bred there and a duke governs it, and there’s word he’s in love with Olivia. Her father and brother recently died, “for whose dead love, they say she hath abjur’d the company and sight of men.”p.344 Viola comes up with a plan, “conceal me what I am, and be my aid for such disguise as haply shall become the form of my intent.”p.344 (I see why the LBTQ community likes this play) She’ll serve the duke as a eunuch (a man that was fully castrated she uses this as an excuse as to why she has a high voice) and the captain agrees to help her and not say a word.
A1S3
In Olivia’s house, Sir Toby talks to Maria asking what’s wrong with his niece. (you mean besides the fact her father and brother just died) Maria tells him to come earlier, to dress better and behave himself. Sir Toby doesn’t see what’s wrong with his outfit, Maria says his drinking is the problem and she heard Olivia speak of the knight he introduced to her. Sir Toby doesn’t know what’s wrong with Andrew he’s tall, makes three thousand ducats a year, plays the viol-de-gambol and speaks four languages. (but how’s his personality) Maria says while that may be true, he’s also a fool gets into fights and is a coward, “tis thought among the prudent he would quickly have the gift of the grave.”p.344 Sir Toby demands to know who says that and Maria tells him they also say he frequently gets drunk with him, Sir Toby says it’s drinking to Olivia’s health, oh here he comes now.
They greet each other and introduces Olivia’s chambermaid and keeps getting her name wrong. Maria leaves and Andrew asks if she has fools in hand Maria replies she has him in hand. (oooh) When she’s gone Toby asks what has him down, Andrew says he sometimes thinks he has no more with than a Christian (ey) or ordinary man or it could be the beef he eats. (or it could be you drink them away) He’ll ride home tomorrow wishing the time he spent on language on the arts, Toby says he has good hair, regardless he’ll ride home tomorrow as his niece won’t have him as the Count woos her. Toby says she won’t worry above herself, Andrew agrees to stay a month and they’ll party together.
A1S4
In the Duke’s palace Valentine tells Viola dressed as a man going by the name Cesario if the duke continues to favor them they’ll advance in no time, he’s not inconsistent in his favors. The duke Orsino, Curio and attendants enter and the duke calls over V/Cesario and orders them to go to Olivia’s and don’t leave until they have an audience. When they see her tell her how much he loves her she’ll listen to them better than someone older. V/Cesario says they’ll do their best, “yet, a barful strife! Whoeer I woo, myself would be his wife.”p.346 (yup she fell in love with this guy)
A1S5
In Olivia’s house Maria has the clown, Feste, (haha get it his name is Feste sounds similar to festive and he’s a fool) tell them where he’s been the lady would have him hanged for his absence. “Well, God give them wisdom that have it; and those that are fools, let them use their talents.”p.346 Maria warns he could be turned out is that as bad as hanging to him, he says hanging prevents a bad marriage. He’s resolved on two points but Maria says Olivia is coming and to make his excuse wise, “Better a witty fool than a foolish wit.”p.346
Movolio and Olivia enter and Olivia orders the fool taken away and the clown tells them to take away Olivia. Olivia says she’s tired of him and he’s dishonest, Feste says he can prove she’s a fool, “to mourn for your brother’s soul being in heaven. Take away the fool, gentlemen.”p.347 Olivia sees his point and calls Movolio distempered and Maria informs them that a young man is at the gate wanting to speak with her. Olivia gives her orders to take care of it and tells Movolio if they’re from court she’s either sick or not at home (I like that this excuse is that old) and tells Toby what’s going on so he leaves. Feste jokes about him and Olivia sends him to make sure nothing happens to her uncle.
Movolio comes back the man at the gate won’t leave and she asks what type of man it is, well he’s not bad looking. Olivia says she’ll allow him to see her (letting a guy in your house because you want to see a cute boy) and has Maria put her veil on. V/Cesario enters and Olivia says to speak V/Cesario says they can only say it to the lady of the house and Olivia finally says it’s her. It’s a poetic, heartfelt message, Olivia says she heard them at the gate and to be brief, “It alone concerns your ear. I bring no overture of war, no taxation of homage: I hold the olive in my hand; my words are as full of peace as matter.”p.348 Maria has her attendants leave them alone.
The message is from the duke Orsino and V/Cesario asks to see Olivia’s face and she lifts her veil and V/Cesario praises her beauty. V/Cesario sees she’s proud but Orsino loves her with adorations but Olivia can’t love him and he won’t take that as an answer. “If I did love you in my master’s flame, with such suffering, such a deadly life, in your denial I would find no sense, I would not understand it.”p.349 V/Cesario says they would stay at the gate and sing about love and yell her name to the hills, Olivia (finding this very romantic) tells V/Cesario to tell Orsino she can’t love him and to tell her how he takes it. After they’re gone Olivia repeats V/Cesario’s words she’s intrigued and calls Movolio and orders him to return a ring V/Cesario supposedly dropped and when they return she’ll tell them why she won’t give Orsino a chance. “I do I know not what, and fear to find mine eye too great a flatterer for my mind.”p.349 (it seems girls know what girls want)
A2S1
Antonio asks Sebastian if he can go with him, Sebastian says his fate looks worse than his and he will face his evils alone. He reveals the truth, that he is a prince of the Messaline and his twin sister drowned at sea. They look alike, but she was beautiful but she is drowned and he still drowns he with memory. Antonio says he’ll be his servant but Sebastian won’t accept since he’s going to Orsino’s court, full of enemies (apparently their two countries don’t like each other we’ll see how it turns out) but Antonio still follows him.
Movolio is following V/Cesario to return the ring and says they should come again to report Orsino’s response. V/Cesario won’t take the ring, Movolio says it’s Olivia’s will to give it to them. V/Cesario worries that they charmed Olivia, certain they left no ring and is horrified to think Olivia is in love with them. (darn you false identity shenanigans two woman can’t possibly be together…this didn’t age well today) What will become of it since they are actually a woman they have to untangle this. “My master loves her dearly; and I poor monster, fond as much on him; and she, mistaken, seems to dote on me.”p.350 (a love triangle not whatever those Twilight books had)
A2S3
Toby and Andrew come into Olivia’s room drunkenly singing and reciting proverbs. Feste comes in and they all joke and make asses of themselves, then Maria comes in and yells at them for being loud, it’ll get them thrown out. They ignore her until they see Movolio who calls them crazy, if they don’t have respect them leave. They act like asses and Movolio goes to tattle to Olivia, they’re all sick of him and decided to make fun of him. Maria plots to drop a love note to him in Olivia’s handwriting. “My purpose is, indeed, a horse of the colour.” “And your horse now would make him an ass.”p.352 (sometimes I just love Shakespeare’s wordplay) They plan to leave it where he can find it and hide to watch him, they celebrate with more drinking.
A2S4 In duke Orsino’s palace Orsino orders Curio to get Feste and whines to V/Cesario, “if ever thou shalt love, in the sweet pangs of it remember me; for such as I am all true loves are: unstaid and skittish in all motions else save in the constant image of the creature that is belo’d.”p.352 V/Cesario hints that they are already in love, Orsino believes them and asks what the woman looks like, V/Cesario describes Orsino. Orsino (failing to understand the obvious) tells them to find someone younger and V/Cesario says they’ll think about it. Feste comes in and sings a melancholy song that makes them depressed and the duke has him leave.
After everyone leaves Orsino tells V/Cesario that they must return to Olivia’s house and convince her of his love and refuses to answer what to do if she protests. (no means no) V/Cesario says they must, “Say that some lady, as perhaps, there is, hath for your love as great a pang of heart as you have for Olivia: you cannot love her; you tell her so; must she not then be answer’d?”p.353 Orsino refuses to believe women can love with a passion like men and no woman can compare to his love to Olivia. (Viola what do you see in this guy) He asks what do they know, too well that women are true of heart their father had a daughter perhaps if they were a woman, but stops before they reveal the truth. Orsino wants to know more and V/Cesario makes up a story that the sister loved so passionately and privately she died and they are the last child of the house. The duke gives V/Cesario a jewel to give to Olivia and not to take no for an answer.
A2S5
In Olivia’s garden Toby, Andrew and Fabian meet up all eager to make a fool of Movolio. Maria comes and has them hide in the trees as Movolio is coming as he does he’s reveling in the fact Olivia supposedly loves him. While the others are making fun of him in the trees Movolio fantasizes about being marred to Olivia and being able to give the orders. Movolio then sees the letter Maria planted saying he should wear yellow stockings and talk funny to prove he loves her, he’ll do it. (no questions asked) When he’s gone the others are happy he fell for it and how he’ll look like a drunken fool.
A3S1
In Olivia’s garden V/Cesario and Feste are having a conversation, Feste says he lives in a house by a church, “So thou must say, the king lives by a beggar, if a beggar dwell near him;”p.356 and they have a friendly verbal spar. V/Cesario stops it and pays him a sixpence, Feste says it would be better if he were an older and wiser man. V/Cesario almost reveals the truth when they say they are sick for one and Feste leaves to announce V/Cesario’s arrival to Olivia, “This fellow is wise enough to play the fool, and to do that well craves a kind of wit:”p.356 (how I wish for a wise fool in office and less foolish fools) He must check everyone he jests and adjust a practice full of labor. (no such thing as unskilled labor)
Toby and Andrew enter and greet V/Cesario impressed with them and Andrew copies their mannerisms. Olivia and Maria enter and Olivia dismisses the them so she can be alone with V/Cesario. She tries to get them to say words of love and doesn’t want to hear of Orsino and admits to planting the ring to get them to come back. V/Cesario says they pity her, Olivia takes it “If one should be a prey, how much the better to fall before the lion than the wolf!”p.357 (not well) Olivia says she won’t press them for love and before they leave asks if Olivia has any words for Orsino and she says to stay. They both confess they are not what they seem and V/Cesario says for now they are Olivia’s fool and Olivia soliloquys a declaration of love. “By innocence I swear, and by my youth, I have one heart, one bosom, and one truth, and that no woman has; nor never none shall mistress of it, save I alone.”p.357 They leave and Olivia wants them to come back.
A3S2
Toby, Andrew and Fabian are in Olivia’s house and Andrew is frustrated Olivia won’t return affections she favors V/Cesario. Fabian says that favor is only a ploy to disguise her love for Andrew, (of course because everyone knows woman cant be straightforward and like to play games) he should have accosted her and beat up V/Cesario and now lost his chance in Olivia’s eyes. Now he deeds to redeem himself with something glorious, Toby says to beat V/Cesario in valor and Olivia will notice, so go and write a challenge to them. When Andrew leaves Toby and Fabian laugh certain that neither will challenge the other in a duel. Maria enters telling them that Movolio is acting crazy in accordance to the letter and Toby wants to see.
A3s3
In a street Sebastian and Antonio tells him he won’t leave him alone out of concern risking recognition and arrest. Sebastian is grateful and where should they go, Antonio says tomorrow as he explains he fought with the king’s people and will pay for it. He gives Sebastian his purse and tells him to go to the lodge after going around the town he’ll meet him there. (in no way will this go wrong)
A3S4
Olivia and Maria are in the garden and Olivia tells her she told V/Cesario to come back and what should she do and wonders where Movolio is. Maria tells her he’s acting crazy and Olivia has her bring him. When she comes back with him Olivia asks what’s wrong with him but he won’t explain and recites lines from the letter Olivia believes its madness. A servant comes to say V/Cesario is here and Olivia leaves Movolio to Maria. When she’s gone Movolio is angry it didn’t work, Maria gets Toby and Fabian and Fabian says, “If this were played upon a stage now, I could condemn it as improbable fiction.”p.360 (almost breaking the fourth wall there) They decide if they lock him up the house will be quieter.
Andrew gives his challenge to Fabian to look over and Toby says if the letter doesn’t move V/Cesario he will and tells Andrew to wait for them in the orchard. With him gone Toby sates he won’t deliver the letter since it’s not terrifying enough, he’ll make up his own challenge and paint Andrew a figure of rage and skill. Fabian says Olivia and V/Cesario are coming now and to go and deliver the message. V/Cesario again asks her to give Orsino the time of day, Olivia just gives them a broach with a miniature of herself inside and wants them to come again tomorrow. (got yourself a bit of a problem here Viola)
Toby and Fabian return to see V/Cesario and tell them Andrew is waiting for them to challenge a sword fight and he’s already killed three men. V/Cesario panics since they are actually a woman and wasn’t taught sword fighting and has no quarrel with Andrew and will return to the house. Toby says they must face him and goes to get him and Fabian also says he’s skillful and to make peace if he can. Toby comes back with Andrew bolstering up V/Cesario and they won’t be pacified, and Fabian can barely hold them back. Andrew woes that he thought he was being valiant, and Toby taunts the two to fight. (honestly this seems hilarious)
Antonio enters and offers to take V/Cesario’s place thinking Viola is Sebastian and draws his sword. Toby asks who he is, “One sir, that for his love dares yet do more than you have heard him brag to you he will.”p.362 V/Cesario tells Andrew to put up his sword as officers arrive and arrest Antonio. Antonio thinking V/Cesario is Sebastian asks for his purse back of course V/Cesario doesn’t recognize him or has the purse. Antonio in enraged by this perceived ingratitude for saving him from drowning. “In nature there’s no blemish but the mind; none can be call’d deform’d but the unkind: virtue is beauty, but the beauteous evil are empty trunks o’er flourish’d by the evil.”p.363 The officers carry him off and V/Cesario wonders if Sebastian survived and leaves the duel, Toby and Fabian call them a coward and encourage Andrew to beat them up. (in no way this backfire)
A4S1
In the street Sebastian and Feste are talking and Feste mistook Sebastian for V/Cesario insisting Olivia sent for him. Sebastian is annoyed and pays him to go away then threatens him, then Andrew shows up and punches Sebastian, Sebastian, in turn, kicks his ass and calls everyone mad. Toby and Fabian show up and Feste leaves to inform Olivia of the fight as Toby holds Sebastian back, but Andrew still wants to fight him (stay down if you know what’s good for you) and Sebastian surprises everyone by telling him to draw his sword. Olivia arrives telling them to stop and sends Toby out of her sight leaving just her and who she believes is V/Cesario. She tells Sebastian to come with her to the house and she’ll tell him about all of Toby’s antics Sebastian is confused but follows her. “Or I am mad, or else this is a dream: let fancy still my sense in Lethe steep; if if it be thus to dream, still let me sleep!”p.364 (a beautiful woman comes out of nowhere and wants you to follow seems like a dream)
A4S2
In Olivia’s house Movolio is in a dark room and Maria and Feste plan to play pranks on him, Feste will pose are a parson and Toby plays along. Movolio thinks he’s a parson and says they locked him in there and Feste knows enough Latin and drivel to convince him. Toby thinks it’s enough and wants to release Movolio but is also afraid Olivia will kick him out. Toby and Maria leave and Feste continues to fool Movolio and he wants him to tell Olivia he is sane and asks to write a letter to her Feste sings as he goes to get pen and paper. (I guess mentally tormenting a person was funny back then)
A4S3
In the garden Sebastian wonders what’s going on, he’s not crazy, a beautiful countess is in love with him and he can’t find Antonio. He thinks it’s all a dream but he has the pearl Olivia gave him, perhaps she is mad or he is. Olivia comes back with a priest and she’s apologizing for the haste (ordinarily a random woman declaring her love as soon as she meets you and pressures you into marriage that day is a red flag but this is Shakespeare it usually works out) and Sebastian agrees to marry her now and keep it a secret until later.
A5S1
In the street Fabian wants to see Movolio’s letter but Feste won’t give it to him. Then Orsino, V/Cesario, Curio and attendants arrive. Feste and Fabian identify themselves as Olivia’s friends, Feste makes a joke and the duke gives him a coin and has him inform Olivia he is here. V/Cesario says the man that saved them from Andrew is a hero as Antonio and the officers arrive. Orsino recognizes him as a pirate that attacked his fleet, V/Cesario vouges for him, even though he spoke strangely. Antonio claims he was never a pirate but was his enemy that witchcraft brought him and calls V/Cesario an ungrateful boy whose life he saved despite the danger and gave him his purse then denied him. (if anyone does this play can they use the most girly purse they can find like the rest is historic it’s just the purse) Orsino asks when they came to town, three months ago.
Olivia and her attendants arrive as the duke calls Antonio’s words madness as V/Cesario has been with him for that time. Olivia asks Orsino what he wants and asks V/Cesario why they didn’t keep their appointment and the duke turns on V/Cesario and threatens them. V/Cesario agrees to leave with him despite his threats, “And I, must jocund, apt, and willingly, to do you rest, a thousand deaths would die.”p.367 When Olivia asks where they’re going, V/Cesario says because they love Orsino more than their life, more than they would a wife. Olivia cries that she was beguiled to V/Cesario’s confusion (I bet they’re all kinds of confused by now) and Olivia sends for the priest as Orsino orders V/Cesario to come and she orders them to stay as V/Cesario protests. (again if anyone is doing this play can Orsino and Olivia tug on V/Cesario’s arms)
The priest comes and confirms he married them just two hours ago, Orsino accepts it but never wants to see V/Cesario again when Andrew arrives with a busted face. He’s calling for a surgeon and Olivia asks what’s wrong he says V/Cesario just beat him and Toby up, he thought they were a coward but they are the devil. V/Cesario says they never touched him but he drew his sword without cause, Andrew says they did hurt him and here comes Toby. Feste is leading him as he claims V/Cesario beat him but he’s also drunk and Olivia has him sent away and Andrew to help him. (I’m guessing she’s just done with their shit by this point)
Sebastian then runs up to Olivia apologizing for hurting her uncle and Orsino notices the similarities to V/Cesario. “One face, one voice, one habit, two persons;”p.368 Sebastian sees Antonio and is relieved, he was worried and Antonio calls him and V/Cesario an apple cut in two, Olivia calls it wonderful. (I’m sure you do think that) Sebastian wonders what is going on since he doesn’t have a brother, how are they related. V/Cesario says Sebastian was their father’s name and their brother’s, who drowned and Sebastian says he had a twin sister, they describe their father who died when they were thirteen. V/Cesario reveals they are Viola and the captain will prove it since he helped disguise her, she then went to serve duke Orsino.
Sebastian tells Olivia she was mistaken and would have married Viola but, luckily, he is also a bit of a maid. (this most likely meant he is a bit feminine but the LGBT community could takes this so many ways) Olivia calls for Movolio, even though he is crazy right now, he knows where the captain is. Orsino tells Viola she told him she loves a woman like him, she says it’s true and he asks to marry her. Feste comes with the letter and Fabian, Olivia has him read the letter, Olivia still has Movolio sent for and she and Orsino have a truce. Orsino tells Viola that she did so much against her sex and beneath her breeding and will make her his mistress and Olivia calls her sister.
Fabian comes back with Movolio who claims Olivia did him a terrible wrong and Olivia denies it. Movolio hands her the supposed letter she left, he did everything it said to, why did she make it a joke. Olivia says it’s not her handwriting, but Maria’s and she was the one who told her he was mad. She knows who made the practical joke and he’ll be the judge of them, Fabian immediately folds and confesses everything. (some friend you are) Feste quotes some lines from the letter and Movolio swears revenge on them all and everyone goes to talk except for Feste. He stays to sing a philosophical song about men’s lives, “A great while ago the world began, with hey, ho, the wind and the rain; but that’s all one, our play is done, and we’ll strive to please you every day.”p.370
Lost - Logan x MC
Angst, approximately 2, 500 words.
Hi. This is my first ever fanfiction, so any feedback is welcome! Although I haven't posted any fanfictions on there other than this one, I will likely branch out from Choices on Wattpad and if you are interested in that, maybe you could look at my account? It's @ GalaxyGirl20671! Again, feedback including constructive criticism is welcome, and I hope you like it! I think it helps 'set the mood' if you do listen to the song, but in no way do you have to! I hope you enjoy. 😊
I know I didn't use every lyric but that's because I didn't want to use repeated lines in case it became repetitive.
Song - Lost by Freya Ridings
*I know I use 'Ellie' in this instance but it just represents the MC - to me, it feels a bit detached to use 'Y/N' - but feel free to self-insert if you wish! :)*
'Standing on the platform, watching you go...'
Ellie stood at the turn - in at the end of her block, watching as a sleek, black-striped yellow sports car slid out of its slot into the street. Almost as easy as it had come into her life, she supposed, on that less-than-fateful day. But she knew that that was not the case, just as she knew the boy whose spark plug necklace was slipped under her t-shirt, guarding her rapidly beating heart.
'It's like no other pain I've ever known'
That same heart ached at even the concept of him leaving her side, yet somehow there the reality was painted, harsh and monochrome against the bold, colourful canvas of what had been her hopes and dreams for the two of them. Although with him, those dreams could have been driving around the city or sat in some reincarnation of his loft eating takeout from Kelso's, and it would still make her feel as though she was graduating from a hundred- no, a thousand - Langstons. Her sense of loss was so strong it manifested itself as physical pain - a common symptom of undergoing stress, she seemed to remember from one of their late-night 'study sessions', the knot in her stomach tightening at the fond, soon-to-be-bittersweet memory.
'To love someone so much, to have no control...'
Ellie could still feel her whole body pulse gently, perhaps not entirely from her emotions (although those threatened to overwhelm her), but from the intensity and fierceness of their last embrace before he left. That had been out of her hands, he had wanted to keep her safe - but her father pulling a gun on him only pushed the situation further out of her grasp. It seemed she had come full circle - from her cop father controlling her life to her breaking free, her forgiving him again, and back to him commanding the one thing she loved beside him; the boy with the car. Couldn't she have one untarnished goodbye out of the many to remember him by, without someone accusing them of something? Ellie's dad had only been trying to protect her, and she knew that - but her first everything had been putting HER first as well, being noble for Gods' sake! Even if it didn't feel like it to her...
'You said "I wanna see the world", and I said "Go"'
The look on his face had told Ellie one thing, yet his mouth spoke another. He had known she had plans for the future, and to him, he was getting in the way of those. With his words, he gently retracted himself from her life. He had been 'just some kid you caused trouble with in high school' to her father undoubtedly, but in Ellie's heart, she knew he was so much more. However, while he was saying that, his arms drew her in and she had melted into his touch. The sound of his car engine seemed to call out decidedly that his words had signified his true intentions.
'I think I'm lost, without you'
Without him, Ellie didn't know who she should be anymore. He was the one who brought her into this life, who brought out this side of her. Every time she had been brave, or confident, or even remotely bold, it had been because of him, directly or otherwise? Whoever thought she'd dance at a secret warehouse rave? Or pass her driving test? Or even talk to Ingrid as an equal in any way other than academics? Going back to her old self felt as difficult as trying to separate water from the sand without filter paper. "Be the real you. the one that was always waiting to come out" he had said. She wanted to so badly, but how could she do that when so much of that person was based on him? It was just like Colt had said - every time she gets behind the wheel she will remember them and the year she had spent.
'I just feel crushed without you'
Ellie's emotions weighed down on her like the heavens on Atlas the Titans' shoulders. Whenever they had been driving or executing one of Kanaeko's master plans with the rest of the MPC, she had enjoyed - no, loved - his company, yet now she realised that once the others were gone he had been the one she needed the most of all of them. And now he was about to be gone, leaving her with a stolen car that Toby wasn't here to patch up, and the memories of fleeting touches long since past.
'I've been strong for so long, I never thought
how much I needed you'
Even when he had left after teaching her to fight, Ellie had not felt it with the same note of finality that this moment held. She had always thought there was a possibility - however small - of seeing him one last time. And now, even though she wished it desperately, Ellie knew he wasn't coming back. This time, too much was on the line.
'Strangers rushing past, just trying to get home.'
In the not-so-far distance, Ellie could hear the steady stream of LA traffic that the boy she loved would soon enter. She wondered - would they know a wanted street racer was cruising down the freeway amongst them? That that drive was breaking two hearts and would damage at least one more before the night was out? Nobody knew where he was going, however, not even Ellie. Her best guess was back to Detroit, but Ellie guessed that not even he knew where he would wind up tomorrow morning. Even that one suggestion could have been some sort of plot to make sure she didn't worry about him (although she would nonetheless) or found where he was. He knew her better than anyone, after all. She would only have agreed to Mona's terms if he had reiterated them.
'But you were the only safe haven that I've known'
Those words were true enough. Despite her father claiming to support her in everything she did, the one thing Ellie never knew she wanted had been right under her nose, kept away from her by the one who 'only wanted her to be happy'. Sure, Ellie understood that Grand Theft Auto wasn't exactly a conventional - or indeed safe- pastime, but not teaching her to drive only meant that once Ellie wanted to learn, she was dangerously inexperienced anyway! And look where that got her. With her driving license, of course (since Ellie, as her dad loved to brag, "succeeded in everything she put her mind to"), but with her friends a now orphaned teen with what seemed to be a world (or at least city) domination problem, a hardened criminal currently in hospital, soon to be jail with a bullet through her side because of her, and two mechanic - slash racers on the run, and a boyfriend (well, would-be, since they never defined the relationship, but an ex now involuntarily)being forced by her dad to leave the country at gunpoint.
The boyfriend who had taught her how to drive. Who had cared about her over the safety of his crew, or even being put in jail. Who had guided her through her first... everything, really. First kiss, first car, first heist - whenever Ellie needed him, he was there. And most importantly, she could say next to anything around him and he would listen and give advice without judgement. Even though she had missed the comfort of her bed whilst residing in his loft, that boy was - and Ellie had a feeling always would be - where her heart lived.
'Hits me at full speed,
Feels like I can't breathe
And nobody knows'
As soon as the key had turned in the ignition, the Devore roaring to life, Ellie's breath had been knocked out of her as fast as if her car could have accelerated from 0 to 100 in a nanosecond. All she wanted to do was scream and howl at the sky, to God, to anyone who would listen to try and get them to rewrite fate so that they could be together. She wanted to cry to Riya, but she knew that her best friend no matter how much they had in common would just take her to get ice cream and tell her 'these things heal in time'. She wanted to collapse at her mothers' feet as she frequently did in her dreams, but the tightness of the heirloom bracelet at her wrist reminded Ellie that that was impossible.
Most of all, however, she wanted her fathers' understanding; that she loved and had lost just as he had all those years ago. She remembered when her dad had met him for the first time properly, the anger he had wielded towards the boy who had put her in so much danger - who had saved her from it just as many times. The disbelief on his face as she explained that she loved this 'bad boy', this 'adrenaline junkie' as she was sure her father addressed him in his mind. How the initial shock had moulded into fury at whatever 'trick' he was sure this criminal must have worked on his daughter. No, Ellie was sure he wouldn't understand for at least the next week or so.
'This pain inside me
My world is crumbling
I should have never
Let you go'
The first tear of what was to be many rolled down Ellie's already mascara-striped face as she fell to her knees. Her dad looked at her in surprise as she screamed in the middle of the street, and could see an identical tear roll down the face of the boy inciting it as he drove past the old man, wincing in guilt as the sound of his ride or die's anguish reached his ears. Had it maybe been the wrong thing to do? Had he maybe... underestimated the intensity of the teenagers' emotions? Undoubtedly, but he had to protect his daughter from going down the wrong path.
Ellie's jaw tightened as her father dared to look vaguely upset at the situation. He was the one worsening it after all. It was almost shameful of him to have judged her (literal) partner in crime so quickly. After all, when had he ever hurt her with bad intentions at heart? Ellie realised that her anger was not directed towards her father, but rather towards herself for allowing this to happen. She couldn't have stopped him leaving, but she could have made sure they were farther out of her dads' line of sight so they would have a chance of a 'proper' goodbye, whatever that was; the one year had spent with him and the crew had felt far more meaningful than any of the 18 she had gone through alone, to the point where the mere thought of goodbye was heartbreaking. And she had simply let him be treated in that way by her kin?
'I've been strong for so long, I never thought
How much I love you'
Earlier in the evening, once she had dispelled all of her nervous energy, her mind had been solely focused on bringing Shaw and The Brotherhood down. But once that had come to pass, her emotions had hit her like a ton of bricks. The Mercy Park Crew had no reason to stick around now Teppei was dead; it was time to find a new gang. For Colt and Mona, leaving had not been a choice. The latter's injury and the formers' determination to build his name in LA's criminal underworld saw to that. Saying goodbye to each of them had been no easy task, and she had half expected him to have skipped town already, to save them both the heartbreak of saying goodbye. But that had not been the case, as he had stepped out of the darkness to say one final farewell.
Tears had soaked Ellie's skin at the words he spoke, as they did now as he drove away. Her guard had been up during the heist, channelling her anger and determination to have Jason put behind bars, along with Detectives Wallace and Hester. But when she was around the crew, those she considered close enough to be family, Ellie had broken down. She had been fierce and brave then; that had been to cover up her paralysing fear of losing them again. Of losing herself again. His goodbye had hurt the most, like a slap to the face, short and painful but with lasting effects.
Throughout the brief conversation, their relationship had played through her mind; not just from her perspective, but what it must have been like for him. How on that day, what seemed to be casual flirting and general friendliness must have been tiptoeing through a minefield for him. A single wrong move and the whole crew could be placed at risk. The initial shock and rush when driving from the cops leading to the beginning of their relationship. How in each moment Ellie fell deeper in love with him, he was doing the same, only that feeling of freefalling was paired with the guilt of tricking her, and the fear of letting her in at the risk of his emotions and her safety - concerns which were not calmed by certain complications they had run into along the way. This myriad of memories only emphasised the emptiness Ellie felt in her heart now.
'Standing on the platform, watching you go.
You said, "I wanna see the world" and I said "Go"'
As Ellie felt the tarmac of the sidewalk dig into her knees and tears roll down her face, she watched as the car she knew so well turned into the next street. When the car swung around, she caught a glimpse of its driver, his eyes trained on hers, smiling weakly through tear-filled eyes. Regret was written undeniably in his gaze, but he was trying to put on a brave face for her to remember him by. Trademark. A thought that once would have put a grin on Ellie's face now caused her to sob in sorrow, grieving the little moments that comfortably passed between them that she was sure could not be replicated with anyone else. She shot him back a brief smile, equally bittersweet in the less than perfect moment, and the last words he said to her echoed in her mind.
"Give 'em hell, troublemaker"
His car finally moved out of sight, and Ellie suddenly felt the repressed need to call out for him spring out in full force; now that her father had walked inside she felt less pressured to avoid the elephant in the room, at least out loud.
"Logan..." she choked out to no one in particular, as she rubbed her road marked knees the way he would have done and slowly got up.
Later, after she had deleted their messages from her phone and laid in her bed in silence, she took off the necklace from around her neck and placed it on the adjourned pillow. "Logan." Ellie whispered to herself as if in the affirmation that he had been real.
She had been lucky to know him. Too bad there wasn't a next time to be ready for.
THE HOCKEY PROJECT: A Catalog
Truly, the number of hockey boys I write is absurd. Under the cut you’ll find a description of all the ‘arcs’--or mini-WIPs--within the Hockey Project. (If you see this reblogged, it means there’s been an update, and there are more hockey boys. Feel free to ask to be tagged for a specific arc, or for all of them.)
1984 The year? 1984. The Winter Olympics? Underway. Jolene Pattison? America’s best goalie.
405 face-off Avery Hope plays for the Seattle Thunderbirds at one end of the I-405. Nick Jagers plays for the Everett Silvertips at the other. A love song for the greater Seattle region.
bar down Jason has been half in love with Conrad, his liney, since they were kids. It's fine.
beaut Dylan Beaubouee gets hit and, for the first time in his life, doesn't immediately get back up. Hundreds of miles away, his ex d-partner Simon Sarkarian overdoses. Together, they recover.
birdcage Quintino Raineri doesn't belong here. In a single night the NHL team he had been drafted to was reduced to only a handful of players, and Quin went from being Harvard's goalie to playing for an honest to god NHL team. One of his fellow NCAA-turned-NHL athletes, Jesse Kovaks, former captain of the Michigan State Spartans, gets it. Like fish out of water, they become friends.
blue line pinch River Dawson, a solid but troubled defenseman, ends up in hotter water than he expects. Three weeks, a phone call, and a plane ride later he's in Port Sterling with a baby on his hip. But there's one person he didn't account for—his new defense partner, who takes no shit and no prisoners.
bottle rocket Toby McCallum is the only girl McCallum. The only girl on her hockey team. The only girl allowed in the boys' changing room—well, not anymore, since rink management pitched a fit about there being a girl in the boys' room, and now Toby has to use the girls' locker room. Enter Stacy Watanabe, a figure skater whose team practices at the same time the hockey team does.
dangle & deke Zach Reddall, as the Port Sterling Skimmers' play-by-play announcer, isn't supposed to hate any of the Skimmers, but fuck if Bradford Chandler, every single frat boy distilled into a single terrible human being, doesn't get on his nerves. A story about growth, potential, and learning to unlearn.
dump and chase They met at hockey camp years ago, back when Jack McCallum was a nobody from a small town in Oregon and Phillip DeCoteau was a rising star from Toronto. Now, they face each other as equals on the ice, and both face the things they've never talked about.
five for fighting Karel Krejčí gets divorced, moves halfway across the country, sleeps around, plays hockey, gets hurt, starts fights, gets hurt more, and falls in love.
gloves off After the bus crash that irrevocably changes the Washington Capitals, everything is different. Mally and Tamps adjust.
gongshow Sasha Molchalin tells him that in three months he'll die, which is the weirdest chirp Clarence Taylor has possibly ever heard. Three months later, the team bus gets hit by a semi. Clarence Taylor is dead for three minutes, and then he's comatose, and then he's spiritually linked to his fucking rival, which is like. That's great. Like his day couldn't get any worse.
lighting the lamp What happens when problematic coaching practices are systematic, not incidental? And what happens to the kids who've moved on? For Kirby and Nordy, signing to a Port Sterling Skimmers team in turmoil after the toxic nature of the University of Michigan's men's hockey program was exposed almost feels like escape--almost. But unlearning the things the University of Michigan taught them is a longer and harder battle than anyone anticipates, and the journey has only just begun.
odd man rush At the end of his Calder-worthy rookie season, breakout forward Jeremy Fitzpatrick gets traded from the struggling Vancouver Canucks to the hopeless Port Sterling Skimmers, bringing with him versatility, high scoring capability, and something that could divide the hockey world straight down the middle.
save selection Johnathan Dickinson is better known for his Tumblr blog than for his goaltending, which is how he likes it. He doesn't need to be good at goaltending to be good at goalie analysis, and analysis--and GIFs of goalies losing their shit--is what his blog is known for. But then the Flyers backup gets sent down, Johnny gets pulled up, and he has to learn how to cover for himself--and fast.
scramble At 5′5″, Mitty is the shortest player in the NHL. At 6′10″, Marty is the tallest. They are teammates, best friends, and partners in crime.
sharpshooter Dallas Lee falls in love hard and fast and easy, and falling in love with Selby Montague is no different. But then there's the problem of Reese Holowinski, and also the fact that they're all teammates.
splitting the d Patty-and-Dunks, defensemen for the Seattle Thunderbirds, are inseparable--or, at least, that's what everyone thinks. Truthfully, they've been split before, and they'll be split again, but they'll find their way home to each other--somehow they always do.
stay in the crease Bryan Weaver doesn't go into the season expecting anything different from his rookie backup, especially since he managed to run off the last three. If he functionally adopts the kid, it's nobody's business but his own.
tape to tape What happens at Junior Worlds should stay at Junior Worlds. Right? Unfortunately, that's not the case for Finland native Tahvo Kyllonen—the year after the Junior Worlds tournament where he developed the world's most poorly timed crush on American Chase Atkins, they both end up playing for the Columbus Blue Jackets, and—even better—playing on the same goddamn line. Now if Chase would stop smiling at Tahvo like that, that would be fantastic.
tic-tac-toe Carson “Kitty” Kittka is a sweet rookie in the brutal world of professional hockey. Elias Koskela, captain of the Port Sterling Skimmers, is a little worried. Just a little bit.
top shelf Everyone keeps saying the starting goalie for the Flames, Andrej Novik, is a nice guy, but Matthew Klatzky, his backup, doesn't see it. Like, really doesn't see it.
Brothers
The Duke of Bainton was prepared for politeness and pleasantry and he made ready to receive, his thin-lipped, easy smile fixed in place.
“It is I who should thank you, Your Grace. This evening has truly been a magical one,” said Miss King.
“The magic has been entirely your own, to be sure,” said the Duke. “And the Earl's daughter is as welcome to my service as the Earl himself.”
“And, Your Grace, may I just say…”
Adrian leaned in as she lowered her voice.
“I’ve been thinking a lot about what you said earlier – how I should be more mindful of my reputation. I think you are right; I should be aware of the consequences of my actions… – But I hope you know, if I had the ability to go back and choose again – I wouldn’t have done anything differently.”
Adrian's lips parted in surprise at this bold declaration. His pallid face flushed for the final time that night, and he swallowed thickly.
“Why-- Miss King, I--” He cast about for words, and finding none, simply smiled at her, perhaps a bit sadly. “I thank you. Goodnight, worthy lady, and goodnight to your fine family.”
With that, the Duke of Bainton went out of the mansion and to his carriage, which waited directly in front of the door for its master. He required a deal of assistance from the footman to embark, having over-exerted himself that evening in every possible respect, and his bad leg wanted to buckle beneath him. Once inside, he fairly collapsed against the seat, and endured the ride home in embattled silence, his body one giant complaint, while his mind turned over Miss King's kind words, her kind face, her kind actions.
I wouldn’t have done anything differently
Wouldn’t have done anything differently
Anything differently
The implication shook him. Perhaps he thought too much of it. Perhaps he thought not enough. Did she mean it the way he thought? That she esteemed him worthy of her attentions in his moment of dire need, even at the risk of her own reputation? Had she truly, boldly declared as much, or was it only a distortion of his fevered mind? Perhaps in his illness he felt so vulnerable he only wanted to think as much. Perhaps he so longed for a good woman in his life that he should fabricate one at his own convenience, the first who showed any sign of decency.
Yes, that must be it.
He left the Astley residence feeling strange in the chest, all but smitten with the Earl's daughter. But by the time he reached his own home, Adrian had convinced himself it was all a trick of his own mind-- a trick of the light, perhaps a few too many sips of wine, perhaps a socially clumsy country girl (but was she?) speaking out of turn and an ailing bachelor wanting her words to be more than they were.
Adrian readied for bed on the verge of complete physical collapse. As his manservant helped him undress, from downstairs came the unmistakable sounds of his little brother, Tobias, returning to the house in a drunk. Just how drunk or what mood he was in mattered little to Adrian.
“I'll finish,” he said to his manservant. “Go to him. Don't let him come here. I haven't the strength for it.”
The manservant did as he was told. Adrian all but fell into his bed and closed his eyes, his left hip aching, his muscles heavy and weak, his heart in turmoil. For in his heart he still thought of Eierene, the sweet little thing, how she'd looked when he left her at the gala, so small and gentle, very like a flower in high summer. The fever burned higher and his mind whirled, twisting his thoughts and distorting every emotion.
The tide turned to Tobias as he heard, from downstairs, his younger brother unleash a savage scream. For what reason, Adrian could not fathom, but Toby was never a reasonable drunk. The boy came home drunk more nights than not, lately, and the very idea made Adrian's heart ache. For a time, he forgot Eirene, and sank into melancholy thoughts of how Toby was so very like their father. Adrian sank into his fever dreams and his warped feelings for his younger brother, everything that kept Toby at a distance-- his resentment over Toby killing their mother in childbirth, resentment over Toby escaping the war healthy and whole, over Toby frittering away his health and well-being with drink, and of course Toby's being a socially inept insufferable ass.
He needed to rest desperately, but Adrian's sleep was troubled. He woke several times during the night, and finally, around dawn, upon waking with a violent coughing fit, took a heavy draught of laudanum, and drifted into an insalubrious and dreamless sleep.
– – –
“What do you mean, he'll not see me!?” Tobias, meanwhile, demanded of the manservant.
“His Grace is very ill, m'lord--”
“Oughtn't his brother be the one to tend him, then!?” Toby was so drunk his eyes would not focus. He threw a dismissive hand on the manservant's direction.
“I have orders, m'lord--”
“FUCK YOUR ORDERS!” bellowed the young man, and he fell to the floor, weeping. “Why will he not see me, Gainesville?”
“He is likely already asleep,” the manservant said gently, touching Toby's shoulder. “His Grace was very tired upon returning.”
“Aye?” Tobias swiped at his streaming eyes. “Aye? He is always tired. My brother is a sick man. He may die soon, you know.”
“You mustn't say things like that,” the manservant chided, again, as gently as he could. “His Grace has proved very resilient--”
“He's dying,” Toby moaned, now going prostrate on the floor, face-down, his face buried in his arms. “It's getting worse, you great sot, don't you see? Or am I the only one here pretending it's not happening? He's dying, my brother is dying, why, God, why!”
Gainesville thenceforth kept his mouth shut. He stayed for a moment longer to ensure that young Lord Wolfe would not disturb His Grace, and, when he was fairly certain that Lord Wolfe would cry himself to sleep on the parlor rug, Gainesville retired to his own quarters, having to marshal his own energies to tend the Duke on the morrow, and the next day, and the next.
--- --- ---
Next day, sometime around noon, Tobias woke with the raised floral pattern of the parlor carpet imprinted on his cheek, and a raging headache hammering away in his skull. His heart was heavy, his groin painful (from having spent several hours too many in a harlot's crib the night before), and despite having been inebriated to the point of nigh-incoherence, he remembered everything. These days, Toby always remembered everything, which was rather inconvenient to a boy who drank mostly to forget.
Tobias picked himself up off the floor and stalked up to his room, pausing briefly before his brother's closed door. He heard coughing inside, and pushed open the door. There lay Adrian, looking an absolute fright, so wasted and small in his dressing-gown, his pallor nothing short of dire. When up and dressed, it was easy to think Adrian was stronger and more substantial than he was. But now, as he lay helpless and ill, exposed and vulnerable, there was no denying anything at all.
Toby slouched against the door frame.
“All right, Adrian?” said he.
“You know how I feel about staying abed, but the exertions of last night's--” he broke off, coughing into a handkerchief, while several others, flecked with blood, decorated the bedside table. Trembling, Adrian shook his head. “Far from all right, brother.... And yourself?”
“Hung over,” Toby said, gazing impassively down at his elder brother. His beloved, ailing elder brother. A man whom Toby idolized even now. A man whom Toby adored, but had long since ceased expressing his adoration, as it was only ever met with scorn and rebuke. Yet he could not help himself. Seeing Adrian so ghastly pale, seeing so many soiled kerchiefs, struck the fear of God into Toby's heart. He was reminded powerfully of seeing Adrian in the Royal Forces hospital, where he was certain to die of consumption, and Toby was forced to admit that the danger was still present. However strong Adrian tried to be, his force of will was not necessarily stronger than a force of God-- a force like illness.
“Call the doctor?” said Toby, not even of a mind to speak in full sentences, lest Adrian scold him for wasting his oxygen.
“No.” Adrian sagged against his pillows, his brow knitting with pain and fatigue. “There's nothing to be done.”
“You're not a doctor. You don't know,” Toby said mulishly. “Don't be stupid, Adrian. Don't try to be so brave, it's only me and the walls to see you.”
“I see myself.” The Duke closed his eyes. “I am excessively fatigued, brother. Please leave me.”
In spite of himself, in spite of being treated the same since time immemorial, the dismissal still stung Toby's heart. He wanted to stay in the room, to keep Adrian company, to hold his hand and to help him take his fucking medicine, but Adrian did not want it. And Toby hadn't the slightest idea why. And he hadn't the slightest notion as to why, after all these years, he still expected Adrian to respond differently. Perhaps, because, on rare occasion, he did. But this was not one of those occasions. But Adrian looked so thin and lonesome, Toby choked back tears to think of leaving him alone. But Adrian's wishes were not to be ignored.
“All right,” said Toby, shoving off of the door frame and turning away. He couldn't help but glance over his shoulder, and see Adrian struggling with the bottle of laudanum, and his heart clenched in an agonizing way. He heard the little medicine cup clatter to the table, Adrian had dropped it, but he never asked for help, he only muttered, “Blast,” to himself, very softly, and Toby walked away.
--- --- ---
“What's this?”
The brothers sat at breakfast two days later. Toby reached for a book which sat on the table at Adrian's left elbow. The Duke had scarcely made a recovery, but insisted upon being up and dressed and going about his business. His only agenda-item for that day was to pay a very brief call to the Earl of Bainton, and Tobias was to accompany him.
“A book,” Adrian said blandly, sipping his tea.
“Elements of agricultural chemistry, in a course of lectures for the Board of Agriculture. What ever are you reading this for?” Toby laughed, shaking his head.
“I am merely curious,” said Adrian, delicately plucking the book from his brother's hands. “It does not belong to me, so keep it away from your breakfast or you're sure to soil it.”
“You're not wrong,” said Toby, for he had long since ceased arguing with Adrian's censures, no matter how unfair. Even, sometimes, as he did this morning, agreed-- if only for the sake of his own amusement. “I'm like a pig at its trough with the porridge, you know. Right slovenly, I am.”
“Do not try my nerves, Tobias.” Adrian had scarcely touched his breakfast, and now pushed it away. “We must tolerate one another's presence for a while today, and you know I am short-tempered when I've been ill.”
“What? You? Tolerate me? What for?” Tobias nudged Adrian's bowl back at him. “Eat a bit more, why don't you?”
“You forget, brother, that yours is a courtesy title only, and I am not to be trifled with. I am a crowned Duke of the Royal Peerage and I'll not stand to be condescended or coddled to in any way.” Flushed with emotion, Adrian pushed the porridge away. His stomach turned. He had no appetite; it was a wasting sickness; it was out of his control. He knew why Toby did as he did, and it was not Toby's actions which incensed him, but their reminder of his illness. Toby did not-- could not-- understand what it was like for Adrian, and this made the Duke angry. Of course he didn't understand-- Tobias was healthy.
“Sorry,” Toby grunted, one brow arched, and he shook his head. “So, what could be so important as to force you into proximity with your repulsive little brother for any length of time?”
“I am calling today on the Earl of Bainton. His estranged daughter has been reunited with him, and you must come and be introduced. They are our neighbors at Ashvale, as you know, and it would be of supreme rudeness for you not to be introduced straight away.
“Have you met her?” Toby bit into a sausage, speaking with his mouthful. “Is she pretty?”
“Do not address me with food in your mouth,” the Duke snipped. “I met her at the Astleys' gala. She is a lovely girl.”
“Lovely!” Toby cried, making his brother flinch. “She must really be something to earn such high praise from the most frigid man in Britain.”
Adrian said nothing, his brow quirked, and he opened the agricultural volume to a page, at random, and began to read.
Several hours later, the Earl of Bainton's valet showed in the Wolfe brothers to the parlor. The Duke was in the front, looking exceedingly pale and tired, but otherwise as prim and perfect as ever. Beside him was a man who, on his own, might have been tolerable enough, but beside the Duke's rigid precision, he looked positively slovenly. His posture was not so keen as the Duke's, and his shirt was perhaps a little rumpled, and his hair was dark and wavy, a bit flyaway, without so much as a drop of pomade to tame (whereas, of course, the Duke's entire head was covered with the stuff, lest a single hair-- as Eirene had observed-- come out of place). To top it off, his expression was sullen, compared with the perpetual, neutral serenity of the Duke.
“Good afternoon, Lord King,” said Adrian, nodding to the Earl. “We've come to return Miss King's book, which she was good enough to leave with me a souvenir of our meeting.”
“I have been told that Miss King is a lovely girl,” the Marquess chimed in. “I am most eager to meet her!”
“And what a meeting it is, to be sure,” said Adrian, casting his brother a withering glance which said, in no uncertain terms, Behave!
Vanessa awoke to rays of sunshine hitting her face. As she rose from the couch, she stretched her arms and legs and took a deep breath. Today was the day for their trip to Boston and she felt more confident. Vanessa opened the curtains, allowing the sun to light up the room. As she neared the bedroom she froze and pressed her ear against the cracked door. Logan was on the phone with someone.
“I can’t even begin how long I have been wanting to hear your voice,” Logan said as his eyes began to water.
“Me too,” Ellie said tearfully.
For a moment, there was silence between them. “As soon as I got back to L.A. I went by the garage, but it was like a ghost town…Colt wasn’t even there”.
“That’s weird…maybe he gave up…or something happened to him…” Logan suggested. He knew Colt was hellbent on continuing his father’s legacy and revenge.
“I doubt it...he’s resourceful” Ellie’s voice trailed off for a moment. “Anyway, that’s not why I called you…I came back looking for you”.
Logan felt his heart race as every memory he shared with Ellie came rushing back to him.
“Where are you?” Ellie asked.
“I’m in Birchport, Massachusetts”.
“What are you doing there?”
“It’s a long story…but I promise I will tell you everything when I get back”.
“I hope you come back soon…I’ve missed you so much”.
“Ellie, listen to me, as soon as I get to Boston and meet her, I promise I am coming straight to you,” Logan said, his voice full of determination.
“I will be right here waiting” Ellie replied.
“When I get back, we can start over, just you and me”.
“What about…well…the Brotherhood? Toby and Ximena were just telling me about this other gang and— “.
“We’ll figure it out when I get back, but right now all I care about is finishing up here so I can see you again”.
“Hurry back okay?”
“I will,” Logan said. “Promise me one thing?”
“Anything”.
“You’ll wait for me at the train station on Friday”.
“I will be there,” Ellie said.
Logan smiled, imagining the look on her face and how it would feel to hold her once again.
“There is one more thing…”.
“What is it?”
“I love you”.
“I love you too, Troublemaker”.
Vanessa closed her eyes and backed away from the door. Her heart shattered into a million pieces, Chelsea had been right all along. She settled back onto the couch and gazed out the window. Once again, someone had played with her heart and stepped on it.
Later on that morning, Vanessa and Logan caught a taxi to her grandparent’s house. Logan tried to talk to Vanessa, but she kept distancing herself from him. Once the driver dropped them off, she quickly walked up to the front door with Logan following behind her.
“Vanessa, can we talk for a minute?” Logan said.
Vanessa brushed him off and took out the key she had and began unlocking the door. It wouldn’t budge so she tried another one she had. Ignoring Logan completely.
“Vanessa, what’s wrong?”
“Wait outside while I grab the keys,” Vanessa said coldly.
Logan was taken aback by her sharp tone and started to respond but figured she needed some space. He took a few steps back as he watched her enter the house and close the door behind her.
Once Vanessa got the keys to the car, they began the two- and a half-hour trip to Boston. As soon as they arrived in the city, Logan began taking in the downtown scenery, noticing how much cleaner and larger it was compared to Las Mente.
“Where did you say this was?” Vanessa asked.
“2612 Russell Street” Logan answered.
Vanessa sighed, remembering how confusing it was to navigate through Boston from the few times her family visited.
“Maybe we can ask someone for directions?” Logan suggested.
“I would not ask a local for directions,” Vanessa said coldly and looked at the address again. “I’m pretty sure that is in the Whitewood neighborhood”.
“Vanessa—” Logan began but stopped himself. There was no use, she wasn’t going to listen to him. He sighed and turned to the window, watching the pedestrians and buildings pass by.
After a while, they arrived in Whitewood, which appeared to be a more suburban and smaller version of Bay Village. Logan nervously tapped his hands on his thighs as Vanessa slowly pulled to a stop in front of a small brick home with black shutters.
“This must be it” Logan took a deep breath and turned to look at Vanessa.
Vanessa looked back at him. She desperately wanted to question him about the conversation she overheard this morning, but she figured it was best to let it go. He had made his choice…and it was not her.
“I guess we should say hi,” he said and gestured towards the front door.
Vanessa shook her head and both of them got out of the car walked up to the front door. Once they got to the front door, Logan rang the doorbell.
A few minutes went by and no one answered the door. Vanessa took out her phone to check the time, only to see twelve missed text messages from Chelsea. “What the hell…?” she said to herself and looked around at the other houses. There wasn’t a single person in sight and an eerie silence swept through the neighborhood. Another text from Chelsea began to come in, Vanessa was about to open it but looked up to see Logan staring at her.
“No answer,” he said with a frown.
“Try knocking,” she said and slid her phone into her purse.
Logan shook his head and knocked on the door and there was still no answer. He backed away and thought back to what Zoe and Rita told him, fearing the worst.
“Maybe she went out?” Vanessa shrugged and rubbed his shoulder.
“Excuse me, can I help you two?”
Both of them turned to see a middle-aged woman with light blonde hair emerge from a taxi carrying a bag of groceries and walking up to the house next door.
“Yes, I am here to see my Grandmother…do you know where she is?”
The woman stopped at the bottom of the steps as Logan and Vanessa joined her.
“Oh, dear…I’m sorry”.
Logan looked between her and Vanessa and furrowed his brows. “What do you mean?”
“She passed away a month ago”.
Logan swallowed looked at the ground, suddenly the world seemed darker to him.
Logan absently stared out the window deep in thought, he had traveled nearly three thousand miles across the country only to be let down. Vanessa came up behind him and rubbed his shoulder before stepping away from him.
“I’ve been picking up her mail for the past few weeks. Her son and niece were supposed to come by and get the house cleaned out and take care of things…but I have yet to hear from either of them”.
Logan turned around to see the woman walk out of a room carrying a small box.
“My name is Hilary Williams by the way,” she said as she set the box down on the coffee table. “I lived next door to Teresa Martinez for years, she was so kind, warm, loving…”.
“I’ll give you two some privacy” Vanessa said quietly and exited the room.
Logan reached inside the box pulling out a photograph, it was similar to the one he saw back at Zoe and Rita’s, except this time it was Hilary sitting at Teresa’s bedside with another man in the photo.
“Who’s the man in the photo?” Logan asked. He pulled out the photo he had in his pocket and held them side by side.
“Dr. Ethan Ramsey,” Hilary said. “He and another young doctor were caring for Teresa while she was at Edenbrook”.
Logan set the other photo down and Hilary picked it up, smiling. “I took this one, that’s Marlene and Sarah”.
“Do you know what happened to her…or how she passed?”
“She had Rhodes disease,” Hilary said with a sigh and proceeded to take out a few more photos that she had of Teresa and passed them to Logan who flipped through each one slowly. “They did everything they possibly could, the younger doctor, Casey Valentine, gave her an experimental drug, but it didn’t cure her”.
Logan remained silent and took in each photo that Hilary had of Teresa. There were a few of Teresa with her son, one taken at the Boston Common and Public Garden, and another at the Symphony Hall.
“The last time I visited her, she said she wished that she could have done more for you”.
“Wait…she knew about me?”
Hilary shook her head. “She did, she knew your mother was not well, your father was gone, her son couldn’t care for you either…but she kept hoping that one day she would get to see your face”.
Logan felt a tear slid down his cheek and wiped it away.
Hilary reached over and patted his knee. “When Teresa passed, she did leave a will and made sure to include you”.
Logan looked up from the photos. “Where is it?”
“With her lawyer, I’m pretty sure I have his contact information…” Hilary reached into her purse and took out her wallet. After a few minutes of searching, she handed Logan a business card.
“Duke Oakley, Darrow & Lockwood Law” Logan flipped it over, seeing a phone number written on the back. “Is this her attorney’s cell phone number?”
Hilary shook her head and then looked at the clock on the wall. “If you hurry, you might catch him before he leaves for the day”.
Logan stood up and shook hands with Hilary. “Thank you,” he said.
Hilary smiled and pulled him in for a quick hug. “Good luck,” she said.
A while later, Logan and Vanessa arrived at the law firm in McCord Bend, one of Boston’s influential neighborhoods within the downtown area. After convincing the parking garage attendant they had a meeting with one of the attorneys, Vanessa parked the car and they headed inside. Soon they approached the elevator and rode it to one of the top floors. Logan was nervous and kept wondering what Teresa wrote and left him, his heart was racing. After a few minutes, the elevator stopped, and the doors opened to an empty hallway. As Logan and Vanessa stepped off, a few lawyers stepped on talking amongst themselves. Soon they reached the office that belonged to Duke Oakley.
“Well…this is where I leave you” Vanessa took a step back and pushed some of her auburn hair behind her ear.
Logan took a deep breath and turned to look at the door to the office. He started to knock but stopped himself. Beads of sweat had formed on his forehead and his breath quickened.
“Vanessa…I…” he started to say but his brain was not functioning, and he couldn’t speak.
“I’ll wait downstairs” Vanessa coldly turned on her heel and walked down the hall, momentarily disappearing as she turned the corner.
Logan knew she was upset with him, she had every right to be. Especially since she got him this far. He turned back to the door and knocked a few times.
“Come in,” said the voice on the other side.
Logan took a deep breath and opened the door. The moment he had been waiting for was happening right now.
“Can I help you?” the man asked. He was sitting at his desk putting some files into his leather briefcase. The sleeves of his dress shirt were rolled up and his tie was loosened.
“My name is Logan and I believe you were my grandmother’s attorney…you must be Duke Oakley” Logan showed him the business card he received from Hilary.
“Yes, I am…who is your grandmother?”
“Teresa Martinez” Logan answered.
Duke stared at Logan for a moment and shook his head, trying to place him.
Logan quickly took the photos he had out of his pocket and handed them to Duke. “I just met with Hilary Williams before I came here and she— “.
Duke took the photos from him and studied them closely, after a moment he looked up at Logan and gestured to the chair across from his desk. “Please, have a seat”.
Logan slowly sat down as Duke walked over to a file cabinet and unlocked it. After a few minutes, he pulled out a file and sat down across from him.
“Teresa showed me a picture of you that was taken at your tenth birthday party,” Duke said as he opened the file and took out Teresa’s will. “She wanted you to come to Boston, but her health was failing, and she knew she couldn’t take care of you”.
“I know, Hilary mentioned she had Rhodes disease,” Logan said. “She also mentioned she had a son and niece…my cousins”.
Duke shook his head. “Yes, Raquel and Luis”.
“Do you know anything about them?”
“Eh…Luis has had a few run-ins with the law so to speak and Raquel keeps to herself. They joined Ms. Williams for the reading and that was the only time I saw them”.
Logan shook his head, it wasn’t the answer he wanted to hear but he was comfortable knowing he had some relatives out there. “Do you know if they live in Boston?”
Duke stroked his neatly trimmed beard and rested his elbows on his desk, clearly thinking back to the day he met with them. “I’m pretty sure they do, not sure where exactly but rest assured, they are in the city”.
Logan shook his head as he began to soak everything in. He wished there was a way to meet his cousins but figured there may be a reason as to why they didn’t want to be bothered.
“I tell you what, I will see what I can do on my end to get all three of you in the same room…I know Teresa would have wanted to see you all together”.
Logan looked up his heart racing. “Mr. Oakley, you don’t have to—”.
Duke held up a hand to stop him. “Teresa wrote to me before she passed and wanted to make sure you met your cousins…and I visited my father and brother in Montana not too long ago, so I understand how important this is.''
“Thank you,” Logan said quietly.
“You’re welcome, and now without further ado…Teresa’s will” Duke tightened his grip on the will and began reading.
Logan took a deep breath and leaned forward, carefully listening to every word.
Vanessa stood at the elevator impatiently, after a few minutes she gave up and bailed towards the stairs. She flung the door open and as she descended the stairs, she felt her legs give out. She couldn’t hold the tears back any longer. As she reached the second landing, she stopped and leaned against the wall, sobbing. How could she have been so stupid to trust him? Why did she let her guard down? Did she even have a chance with him? Vanessa wiped her eyes and took out her phone—Chelsea was calling.
“Hey Chels” Vanessa answered.
“Vanessa, where the hell are you?!”
Vanessa sighed and lowered the phone, after a moment she raised it back to her ear. “I’m in Boston with...Marco”.
“Oh my god Vanessa, you…oh my god…”.
Something about the tone in Chelsea’s voice sent a chill down her spine, Vanessa took a few steps forward and continued down the stairs.
“Vanessa, you need to get away from him…you have no idea who he really is”.
“Wait…I…what are you talking about?”
“His name isn’t Marco, it’s Logan!”
Vanessa froze and gripped the railing. “What...?”
Chelsea sighed impatiently on the other end of the line. “I met up with Ingrid and she was showing me the pictures she took at prom, one of the photos had that girl, Ellie I told you about in the background and Marco or Logan was in the photo! She was draped all over him!”.
Vanessa breathed slowly, her heart thumping in her chest.
“Ingrid told me they were hooking up, but that is beside the point! Logan is involved in a gang called Mercy Park Crew and they have pissed off a lot of dangerous people and are wanted by the police! That Emilio guy I told you about? Was in on it too! He was murdered by someone in a gang that was after them!”
Vanessa paced the landing nervously, “But…how…?”.
“Ingrid went to prom with Brent, who threw a party and invited Logan. Logan sold him stolen cars and set him up for a drug bust!”
Vanessa’s head was spinning, and her heart was racing. She looked up seeing the door starting to open and quickly hurried down the stairs.
“You need to get away from him! I went by the Lilac Palm and the manager said Javier has not been there in days!”.
Vanessa felt beads of sweat forming on her forehead…today was Thursday…she had lost track of the days with everything going on. She looked up hearing footsteps and hushed voices speaking in Spanish.
“I think Javier is involved in a gang…a different gang that is after anyone in the Mercy Park Crew”.
Vanessa’s mind raced back to the night she was at Ingrid’s house with Chelsea and how she mentioned the gun and the pictures of the two cars. Javier was probably planning a hit or was sent by someone who had put a hit on Logan.
“Vanessa, tell me where you are! Something is going on and I’m sure these people who are out to get Logan and anyone else involved with that crew will not hesitate to kill you too!”
Vanessa felt tears running down her cheeks. She was about to speak, but froze, the voices and footsteps above her had stopped.
“Vanessa?!”
“Chelsea…I don’t think I’m alone” Vanessa whispered into the phone and crouched on the stairs. She tried to see who was up above.
“Vanessa, where are you?”
Vanessa slowly lowered her phone and swallowed, her heart was racing. She didn’t even know what floor she was on but she was certain of one thing, she wasn’t close to the ground floor.
“Vanessa!”
Vanessa slowly moved down a step and then another, just as she reached the next landing, she jumped as the door flew open. An older man in a grey suit carrying a briefcase stood above her.
“Can I help you?”
Without thinking, Vanessa shoved the man out of her way and took off running. She briefly looked over her shoulder and saw three masked figures emerge from the stairwell, in hot pursuit. A scuffle broke out as one of the figures threw the man who stopped her down the stairs. Vanessa winced, as she heard a gunshot follow. The other two bolted towards her, reaching for their guns.
“¡No la dejes escapar!” she heard someone shout.
“Vanessa! What is going on?!”
Vanessa quickly disconnected the call and continued running, blinking back tears. She hated herself, this is what she got for trusting a bad boy and developing feelings for him in the process. He had dragged her into his mess and there was now a dark road ahead of her.
New British TV Series for 2021: BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Sky Dramas, Britbox & More
https://ift.tt/3y44fPr
Among the detective dramas and high-stakes thrillers due to arrive on British television in the next year or so, there are a clutch of sci-fi, supernatural and horror shows also coming our way. April saw the release of Sky One original Intergalactic – the story of a wrongly imprisoned galactic pilot who breaks out of space jail with a gang of other high-security female prisoners – and Netflix has ordered fantasy novel adaptations Half Bad, Cuckoo Song, Lockwood & Co. and The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle – respectively, tales of witches, supernatural pacts, ghost-hunters, and a woman who jumps between bodies in her quest to solve a murder mystery. Coming to terrestrial TV, there’s Life After Life and The Three, stories about living multiple versions of the same life, and the miraculous child survivors of a mysterious plane crash.
On top of that, there’s plenty of true crime, thrillers, a new Sally Rooney adaptation for fans of Normal People, the screenwriting debuts of Candice Carty-Williams and Cash Carraway, plus Shane Meadows’ first period drama. Find out what’s coming from the UK in 2021 and beyond below.
We’ll keep this list updated with new commissions and as casting details and release dates are confirmed.
Anansi Boys (2022)
Following on the heels of Good Omens‘ surprise second series renewal by Amazon Prime Video came the announcement that the same team were to adapt Neil Gaiman’s Anansi Boys novel into a television series. It’s the story of Fat Charlie Nancy and his slippery brother Spider, sons of Mr Nancy, the folkloric spider god and trickster famed in West African and Caribbean mythology. Casting for the six-part series has yet to be announced.
Around the World in 80 Days (tbc)
Filming began in South Africa on this new eight-part adaptation of Jules Verne’s classic novel in February 2020, and was halted in March by Covid-19 with an episode and a half in the can, before resuming in early July, then finally wrapping in March 2021. The European-funded series will air on BBC One and stars David Tennant as Verne’s famous explorer Phileas Fogg. To satisfy a foolhardy wager, Fogg and his valet set off on a globe-circling journey, this time in the company of journalist Abigail Fix, played by The Crown’s Leonie Benesch. It’s been adapted by a team led by Life On Mars’ Ashley Pharoah.
Anne (tbc)
World Productions, the makers of some of the best British drama around (Line Of Duty, Save Me, Jed Mercurio drama Bodyguard) are behind this four-part drama for ITV. Written by novelist Kevin Sampson, who was present at Hillsborough Stadium on the tragic day that ninety-six football fans died, it tells the real-life story of Anne Williams’ decades-long fight for justice for her teenage son and all the victims of the 1989 disaster. Maxine Peake stars in the lead role and Bruce Goodison directs. Peake was spotted filming the series in Liverpool back in late 2018 but there’s no sign yet of a release date.
Before We Die (May)
Adapted from the Swedish crime thriller of the same name (pictured above), Before We Die is the six-part story of a detective who discovers that her son is acting as an undercover informant in a brutal murder investigation. This English-language version is set in Bristol and stars Lesley Sharp, Vincent Regan and Patrick Gibson. The series aired on Channel 4 in May to lukewarm reviews.
Behind Her Eyes (Feb)
This six-part psychological thriller arrived in February, went straight into Netflix’s Top 10 and had an ending that left a real impression on viewers (spoilers in our discussion of it.) Adapted by Hannibal and The Punisher’s Steve Lightfoot from Sarah Pinborough’s 2017 novel, it’s the story of a woman who becomes involved in an unconventional love triangle that develops into a dark, twist-filled web of secrets. Tom Bateman (Vanity Fair, Beecham House) and The Luminaries’ Eve Hewson star.
Best Interests (tbc)
Jack Thorne (pictured), the busiest screenwriter in the UK is returning to BBC One fresh from His Dark Materials series two with a new original four-part drama partly inspired by the real-life Charlie Gard case. It’s about a young child with a life-threatening condition whose medical team judge it in her best interests that she be allowed to die, a decision her family can’t support and fight every step of the way. The commission was announced in July 2019 and filming was due to begin in 2020 before the pandemic took hold. As of June 2021, there were no recent updates about progress on this one.
Bloodlands (Feb)
Series two has already been ordered of new BBC One Belfast-set crime drama Bloodlands, which stars The Missing and Cold Feet‘s James Nesbitt. The thriller, from new writer Chris Brandon, revolved around a cold case that held personal significance for Nesbitt’s detective and dug up buried secrets for him and the people of Belfast. Susan Lynch, Michael Smiley, Ian McElhinney and Lisa Dwan were among the cast for series one.
But When We Dance (tbc)
Directed by Johnny Campbell (of In The Flesh and Dracula fame) and written by Esio Trot’s Paul Mayhew Archer, this one-off comedy-drama about two people with Parkinson’s disease was announced in late 2019 and will be coming to BBC One. Described as a touching and hilarious love story, it’s the story of Tony and Emma, a couple who first meet at a dance class for people with Parkinson’s. It promises to be a witty, heart-felt 90 minutes throwing a light on a much-diagnosed condition in the UK.
Call My Agent (tbc)
An English-language adaptation of the hit French comedy-drama following a Parisian talent agency is coming to the UK, and from the best possible choice of writer – WIA and Twenty Twelve writer John Morton. Filming took place in summer 2021 on the series, which is set to welcome a host of star cameos including Helena Bonham Carter, Kelly Macdonald and Jim Broadbent, all playing satirical versions of themselves. Jack Davenport leads the regular cast.
Cash Carraway w/t (2022)
Inspired by writer Cash Carraway’s recent memoir Skint Estate, this new BBC drama will star This Country’s Daisy May Cooper as a working class single mum skewering stereotypes and exploring the brutal realities of austerity Britain. Creator Carraway assures viewers that it won’t be “a woeful tale of poverty porn,” but a love story between a mother who refuses to give in, and her 10-year-old daughter.
Champion (2022)
From Candice Carty-Williams (pictured above), writer of 2019 hit novel Queenie, comes a series celebrating contemporary Black British Music. Which of the Champion siblings will prosper?
It was announced in May 2020 that Firebird Pictures Ltd is working on the screen version of the story by the writer-actor. Come Again is the first novel by Webb (Peep Show, Back, That Mitchell And Webb Look). It tells the story of Kate, a karate expert, computer genius widow mired in grief who gets an out-of-this-world chance to go back into her past and change the future. It’s part love story, part coming-of-age story, part spy thriller packed with action and 90s nostalgia.
Conversations with Friends (2022)
Following the enormous success of Normal People – the story of young Irish couple Marianne and Connor navigating love, sex, university, class, friendship and mental health – the BBC and Hulu are collaborating on an adaptation of author Sally Rooney’s debut novel, Conversations with Friends. This one’s on a similar bent, as the story of a pair of young Irish students who get involved with an glamorous older, married couple. The cast looks excellent too, with Joe Alwyn and Jemima Kirke playing Nick and Melissa, newcomer Alison Oliver playing the lead Frances, and Utopia (US) and Loki‘s Sasha Lane as Frances’ friend Bobbi.
Crime (tbc)
Filming began in April 2021 on Irvine Welsh crime thriller adaptation Crime, a Britbox exclusive due to arrive late this year. Ordeal by Innocence’s Anthony Boyle plays Wood, with the magnificent Toby Jones as Shiner, from a screenplay written by Murder and Party Animals’ Robert Jones. It’s currently available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
Death Comes as the End (tbc)
With Agatha Christie adaptation The Pale Horse having completed Sarah Phelps’ quintet of adaptations for the BBC in 2020, it’s the turn of a different voice on a very different kind of Christie novel. That voice? Vanity Fair and Five Days screenwriter Gwyneth Hughes. And that novel? Death Comes As The End, a murder mystery set not in the early 20th century, but in ancient Egypt. The arrival of a new concubine sends ripples through an Egyptian priest’s family. The cast and air date have yet to be announced.
Devils (February)
Italian-French-UK co-production Devils came to Sky Atlantic in February, a high-finance thriller based on Guido Maria Brera’s novel of the same name. It’s a story of a top investment firm, multi-million dollar deals, a mysterious death and a public scandal. Alessandro Borghi stars.
Domina (May)
From Simon Burke, the creator of Sky weird-thriller Fortitude, eight-part historical family saga Domina is set in ancient Rome, beginning in the wake of Julius Caesar’s assassination. Based on real historical characters, it follows the ascendancy of Livia Drusilla through the Roman political ranks, as she strategizes her way to the top, driven by revenge.
Englistan (tbc)
Actor, rapper and screenwriter Riz Ahmed (pictured) was announced in 2018 as developing this ambitious nine-part series with BBC Two, but no updates have been released since. It was set to be a drama about three generations of a British Pakistani family set over the course of four decades. As soon as there’s any news on this one, we’ll include it here.
Everything I Know About Love (2022)
Novelist and journalist Dolly Alderton has turned screenwriter to adapt her own memoir Everything I Know About Love for the BBC. Described as “a generous, funny, warm-hearted and uplifting Sex & the City for Millennials, it’s the story of two young women Maggie and Birdy, who move to London and have to navigate relationships, flat-shares, heartache and friendship.
Extinction (2022)
This one needs to be on your radar: Giri/Haji creator Joe Barton has written an eight-part action thriller starring I May Destroy You and Gangs of London‘s Paapa Essiedu. It’s the story of a man recruited into an organisation formed to stop global catastrophes, who ends up reliving the same day again and again. Strike‘s Tom Burke, The Bodyguard‘s Anjli Mohindra and Jonathan Creek‘s Caroline Quentin co-star.
Finding Alice (January)
Keeley Hawes stars as a woman who discovers a host of unsettling secrets when her partner Harry unexpectedly dies when they finally move into their newly built dream house. A black comedy that aired on ITV in early 2021, Finding Alice also stars Joanna Lumley and Nigel Havers, and was written by The Durrells’ Simon Nye.
Four Lives (tbc)
Previously titled The Barking Murders, Four Lives is a three-part BBC drama based on real-life killer Stephen Port, and the aftermath of the four murders he committed. Port raped and murdered four men between 2014 and 2015, using Grindr to attract his victims. Jeff Pope, who previously penned The Moorside and Little Boy Blue, is the writer, with Neil McKay directing. Sheridan Smith and Jamie Winstone will star alongside Stephen Merchant as Port. In this Entertainment Focus interview from April 2020, actor Michael Jibson confirmed the drama was currently postponed due to the ongoing real-life criminal case.
It’s 20 years since the release of Ginger Snaps, the first in a trilogy of now-cult horror films, and, according to Sid Gentle Films, high time for a live-action TV adaptation. The darkly comic feminist werewolf movie will be adapted for a TV co-production by Anna Ssemuyaba, who has previous written for Sky’s Guerilla, Channel 4’s Adult Material and ITV’s Unsaid Stories, and from by the co-producers of Killing Eve and Orphan Black.
Grace (March)
From Endeavour creator Russell Lewis come two feature-length adaptations of Peter James’ crime novel series about a Brighton-based Detective Superintendent. Life on Mars’ John Simm plays unorthodox investigator Roy Grace, who’s haunted by the disappearance of his wife, in two-hour versions of Dead Simple and Looking Good Dead. The first film, which aired in May, revolves around a cold case and a groom who goes mysteriously missing just days before his wedding, and the second film will air later in 2021. Reviews were good so catch up on ITV Hub if you missed it.
Half Bad (tbc)
Based on Sally Green’s celebrated book trilogy of the same name, Half Bad will be an eight-part one-hour Netflix fantasy drama. It’s about a 16-year-old boy who has spent his life surveilled for signs that he may follow in the footsteps of his father – the world’s most feared witch. Giri/Haji creator Joe Barton is writing the series, with Andy Serkis among the producers. We. Can’t. Wait.
Harlan Coben’s Stay Close (tbc)
Thriller writer Harlan Coban is currently part of the way into a five-year deal with Netflix to adapt 14 of his novels, and Stay Close is the latest adaptation from writer Danny Brocklehurst and RED Productions, the team that brought us The Stranger. Like The Stranger, Stay Close will star Richard Armitage and move the book setting from the US to the UK. It’s the story of three characters whose dark secrets threaten to destroy their lives. James Nesbitt and Cush Jumbo also star.
Hollington Drive (tbc)
If you’ve seen writer Sophie Petzal’s Irish thriller Blood starring Adrian Dunbar, you’ll want to tune in for this. Coming to ITV, it’s a four-part thriller about two grown-up sisters who become entangled in a tense mystery when their children are involved in the disappearance of a 10-year-old local boy. Expect twists, turns, and sharp writing. The cast looks great too, led by Rachel Stirling and Anna Maxwell-Martin (pictured above).
Inside Man (tbc)
The latest BBC One drama from former Doctor Who and Sherlock showrunner Steven Moffat is a four-part crime thriller entitled Inside Man. The twisting story is about a death row inmate in the US and a woman who’s trapped in a cellar under an English vicarage, whose lives interlink “in the most unexpected way”. The cast (pictured above) looks excellent and includes plenty of Moffat’s past collaborators in David Tennant, Dracula‘s Dolly Wells and Lydia West, and Mr Stanley Tucci.
Intergalactic (April)
Sky One’s Intergalactic is an original, British space-set drama about a galactic pilot who’s falsely imprisoned, then breaks free with a gang of other high-security female prisoners. It stars The Tunnel‘s Savannah Steyn in the lead role, with Parminder Nagra, Eleanor Tomlinson, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Natasha O’Keeffe, Thomas Turgoose and Craig Parkinson, so lots of great British talent in the cast. The first series aired in Spring 2021 and is available to stream on NOW.
It’s a Sin (January)
This 1980s-set drama (previously titled The Boys) comes from acclaimed screenwriter Russell T. Davies (A Very English Scandal, Doctor Who) and tackles the impact of AIDS on the lives of three young men across a period of ten years. It’s the story of “the epidemic, the pain of rejection and the prejudices that gay men faced throughout the decade.” It was one of the dramas of the year, with a fantastic cast including Olly Alexander, Lydia West, Omari Douglas, Neil Patrick Harris, Keeley Hawes, Stephen Fry, Tracy Ann Oberman and Shaun Dooley.
Karen Pirie (tbc)
A new detective is on her way to ITV in the form of Karen Pirie, the creation of novelist Val McDermid who’s also the literary source of ITV’s popular Wire in the Blood forensic pathology series. The new crime drama comes adapted from the first in McDermid’s five-book series The Distant Echo by Harlots and Save Me Too’s Emer Kenny. It’s about a young Scottish detective working in St. Andrews who is tasked with reopening cold cases. The first involves the 25-year-old death of a teenager whose unsolved murder has become the subject of a true crime podcast. It’s being made by Bodyguard and Line of Duty‘s World Productions.
Landscapers (tbc)
A four-part true crime series about ‘Mansfield Murderers’ Susan and Christopher Edwards is on its way to Sky Atlantic and HBO. Alexander Payne (Sideways) was set to direct, but departed the project in October 2020 following what’s being reported as a scheduling conflict after Covid-19 pushed production back. The Edwards killed Susan’s parents and buried them in their garden, then spent over a decade draining their bank accounts before being discovered in 2014. Olivia Colman will star as Susan Edwards, from a script written by Colman’s producer husband Ed Sinclair. Giri/Haji and Flowers’ Will Sharpe replaces Payne as the director.
Life After Life (tbc)
Kate Atkinson’s 2013 novel Life After Life is a masterpiece of imaginative fiction, so it’s no surprise that BBC One is currently preparing a TV adaptation. It’s the story of Ursula, a woman with the extraordinary power to keep being continually reborn into new and alternative versions of her life after she dies. Seemingly insignificant changes to people and circumstances set her on new courses every time – can she alter the course of history? Playwright Bash Doran (Traitors) has adapted the novel and filming began in April 2021 with a cast including Sian Clifford, James McArdle and lead Thomasin McKenzie.
Lockwood & Co (tbc)
Attack the Block’s Joe Cornish is writing and directing this Netflix adaptation of Jonathan Stroud’s supernatural adventure series about a ghost-hunting detective agency run by two teenage boys and a psychic girl. It’s set in London and was only announced in December 2020, so don’t expect to see it arrive on the streaming service for a little while yet.
Magpie Murders (2022)
One of a slate of original drama commissions for UK streamer Britbox, Anthony Horowitz will adapt for screen his own murder mystery novel Magpie Murders, the first of his Susan Ryeland series. Lesley Manville will play literary editor Ryeland (Manville), with Spall playing her client’s fictional 1950s detective Atticus Pünd. A dream cast for this six-part thriller.
Marlow (2022)
Another Britbox commission that shows the UK streamer is serious about making a splash in quality original drama, Marlow will be an eight-part thriller from Southcliffe and Red Riding’s Tony Grisoni, starring The Crown’s Claire Foy. It’s a modern-day crime fable based around two warring families “amid the unsettling and indelible landscape of the Thames Estuary,” or as Foy’s revenge-seeking character Evie Wyatt calls it, the Edgelands.
Marriage (2022)
From Stefan Golaszewski, the creator of excellent comedy-drama Mum (pictured above) and comedy Him & Her, comes four-part drama Marriage. Not much is known about the show yet, but we can expect it to examine “in intimate detail the fears, frustrations and salvation of marriage and the comfort that can only be found in togetherness.”
My Name is Leon (tbc)
Filming began in March 2021 on a feature-length adaptation of Kit de Waal’s novel My Name is Leon, the 1980s-set story of a nine-year-old biracial boy forced to cope with his mother’s breakdown. My Name is Lizzie (tbc)
This four-part Channel 4 drama, based on real events, will star The Virtues and Raised by Wolves’ Niamh Algar as an undercover police officer used in a honeytrap search for a killer in the 1990s. Written by The Tunnel’s Emilia di Girolamo, it promises to take viewers behind the scenes on one of the UK’s most controversial police investigations. It was only announced in late 2020, so don’t expect it for a little while.
No Return (tbc)
Filming is due to begin in summer 2021 on ITV’s No Return, a Manchester-based four-part drama from Danny Brocklehurst (The Stranger, Shameless). It stars Sheridan Smith (pictured above) as the mother of a 16-year-old boy accused of a serious crime while on a family holiday in Turkey. Secrets unfurl as the family fights an alien legal system to free their son and get to the truth.
Ragdoll (tbc)
Attn: crime fans. Alibi has commissioned darkly witty six-part thriller Ragdoll, to be adapted from the novel of the same name by Daniel Cole. It’s a Jo Nesbo-ish crime drama about a grotesque murder in which six victims have been sewn into the shape of a single body. Detectives Rose, Baxter and Edmunds are on the case, charged with protecting the killer’s next set of advertised victims. The Irregulars’ Henry Lloyd Hughes, Lucy Hale and Thalissa Teixeira will star.
Red Rose (tbc)
A contemporary teen horror series is on its way to BBC Three and Netflix, written by Michael and Paul Clarkson (The Haunting Of Hill House, pictured). Red Rose will be an eight-part series about the relationship between teenagers and their online lives. It’s the story of Rochelle, a Bolton teen who downloads a mysterious app that sets in motion a series of terrifying events. Ultimately, say the Clarksons, “it’s the story of friendship told through the prism of a classic horror-thriller.”
Riches (tbc)
From Empire to Succession, the complicated family lives of the super-wealthy are a continued source of fascination on screen. ITV has ordered drama Riches from writer Abby Ajayi to mine that seam. The six-part drama revolves around successful businessman Stephen Richards, a specialist in cosmetics for black women, who’s on a winning streak until a dramatic event forces his grown-up children from two marriages to gather together and decide what happens next.
Ridley Road (tbc)
Four-part BBC One thriller Ridley Road is adapted from Jo Bloom’s 2014 novel of the same name by screenwriter-actor Sarah Solemani (Him & Her, No Offence). It’s the story of the fight against fascism in 1960s London. According to Solemani, the novel reveals “a darker side of Sixties London and the staggering contribution the Jewish community made in the battle against racism.” Newcomer Aggi O’Casey is joined by Eddie Marsan, Rory Kinnear, Samantha Spiro and more.
Ripley (tbc)
Sherlock and Fleabag’s Andrew Scott will play Tom Ripley in a new TV adaptation of the Patricia Highsmith five-strong novel series for Showtime and Sky Atlantic. The first season will restage events as depicted in Anthony Minghella’s The Talented Mr Ripley, when a young grifter in 1960s New York is hired by a wealthy man to convince his wayward, hedonist son – played by Emma and Beast’s Johnny Flynn – to return home from Italy. Steven Zaillian (The Night Of, Schindler’s List) will write and direct.
Rogue Heroes (tbc)
A major new drama is on its way to BBC One, from Steven Knight, creator of Peaky Blinders and Taboo. The six-part drama is based on Ben Macintyre’s SAS: Rogue Heroes book, which charts the creation of the famed Special Forces unit. Knight has written the adaptation, which will tell a tale “celebrating the glory, action and camaraderie at the heart of this story” while delving into the psychology of the officers and men who formed the SAS in WWII. With real-life events given Knight’s visionary treatment, this one promises to be a spectacle with real depth. Jack O’Connell and Alfie Allen are among the cast (pictured above.)
Screw (tbc)
Inspired by his real-life experience as a civilian prison worker, writer Rob Williams (Killing Eve) is bringing a six-part prison drama to Channel 4. Screw promises to show “the uncensored, terrifying and often darkly funny reality of life as a prison officer in an all-male prison in 21st century Britain.” The story focuses on veteran officer Leigh, who’s trying to keep her past buried, and mouthy new recruit Rose. The cast includes Nina Sosanya, Jamie-Lee O’Donnell and Stephen Wight.
Sherwood (tbc)
A new six-part crime drama is coming to BBC One from acclaimed playwright James Graham, the writer behind Quiz and Brexit: The Uncivil War. Set in post-industrial Nottinghamshire, where the drama was filmed, Sherwood is fictional but inspired in part by real events and tells the story of two murders that lead to one of the largest manhunts in British history. Two police officers have to set aside their differences to find the killer, against a socio-political backdrop of community divisions riven during the 1980s Miners’ Strikes. Lesley Manville, David Morrissey and Joanne Froggatt star.
Sweetpea (tbc)
From Kirstie Swain, the screenwriter of Channel 4’s Pure comes a new eight-part series adapted from C.J. Skuse’s 2017 novel of the same name. It’s the story of a young woman who seems unremarkable on the surface and works as an editorial assistant in a British seaside town. Unfulfilled by her job, she turns to darker pursuits outside of work, because who would ever suspect her? The comedy-drama is coming to Sky Atlantic and no casting has yet been announced. Read our interview with Kirstie Swain about Pure, mental illness in TV drama and more.
Tenacity (tbc)
If you saw His Dark Materials on BBC One, then you know Welsh-based Bad Wolf Productions are capable of great things on a grand scale. In 2019, ITV commissioned them to make six-part thriller Tenacity, from a screenplay by Flightplan’s Peter A. Dowling, based on the J.S. Law novel of the same name. It’s about a body discovered on a British nuclear submarine, investigated by military detective Danielle Lewis. Think assassins, high-stakes action and a momentous threat to national security. The cast is tba.
The Amazing Mr Blunden (December)
Following on from Sky’s beautiful festive family film Roald & Beatrix: The Tail of the Curious Mouse with another, this time written and directed by Mark Gatiss. The 90-minute feature will star Gatiss, Simon Callow and Tamsin Grieg, and tells the story of two London teenagers whose mum moves them to a haunted country house where they get involved with a thrilling story of strange visitors, time travel and wicked would-be murderers…
The Baby (tbc)
The Baby is a darkly comic horror on its way to Sky Atlantic. The eight-episode first season was co-created by screenwriter Siân Robins-Grace (Kaos, Sex Education) and Gangs of London production manager Lucy Gaymer. It’s being billed as a provocative, dark and funny story about a woman in her late thirties who’s unexpectedly landed with a baby that takes over her world. The cast includes The Duchess‘ Michelle de Swarte (pictured), who’ll star alongside Amira Ghazalla and Amber Grappy.
The Birth of Daniel F Harris (tbc)
With a similar premise to Sky One’s Two Weeks to Live, but a psychological drama instead of a knockabout comedy, this Channel 4 drama by Urban Myths‘ (pictured above) Pete Jackson is the story of a young man raised in isolation from society after his mother’s death, by a father who told him the outside world is filled with monsters. When the boy turns eighteen, he enters the world to find the person responsible for his mother’s death. Read more about it here.
The Confessions of Frannie Langton (tbc)
Adapted by Sara Collins from her own Costa Prize-winning novel of the same name, The Confessions of Frannie Langton is a four part murder mystery set in Georgian London. It follows the title character, born on a Jamaican slave plantation and transported as a ‘gift’ by the man who enslaved her to the home of a wealthy London couple who meet a grim fate. Was Frannie really responsible? Or is she being used?
The Devil’s Hour (tbc)
Peter Capaldi and Jessica Raine lead the cast of a new six-part “mind-bending” Amazon Prime Video thriller from writer Tom Moran, produced by Steven Moffat. It’s the story of Lucy (Raine) who suffers from terrifying visions every night at precisely the same time (the titular devil’s hour), and who becomes entangled with a series of brutal murders. Capaldi, pictured above, plays “a reclusive nomad driven by a murderous obsession”, which all sounds rather fun.
The Elephant Man (tbc)
The story of Victorian Joseph Merrick was memorably brought to the screen by David Lynch in 1980, and has since been retold on stage (notably starring Bradley Cooper in the lead role). This two-part BBC drama stars Stranger Things’ Charlie Heaton (pictured) and is written by Moorside’s Neil McKay. The biopic will tell the story of Merrick’s life from the start to the end and promises to “explore the man behind the myth”. Filming was due to take place in Wales in late 2018, but there’s been no news about this one since so it’s a bit of a question mark.
The Following Events are Based on a Pack of Lies (tbc)
In this original six-part BBC One thriller, screenwriters Penelope and Ginny Skinner (pictured above) tell the story of two very different women, both of whom are being conned by the same man. Alice and Caroline have Rob in common, a celebrated ecopreneur who may well be trying to destroy them both. Inspired to fight against society’s glorification of the predator, The Following Events are Based on a Pack of Lies was commissioned in August 2020, so it’ll be a little while before we see it.
The Gallows Pole (2022)
You’re going to want to look out for this one. Director Shane Meadows (This is England, The Virtues), whose TV work usually airs on Channel 4, is making his BBC drama debut with an adaptation of Benjamin Myers’ acclaimed novel The Gallows Pole. It’s a true historical story about Yorkshire legend David Hartley and the Cragg Vale Coiners, who became the biggest fraudsters in British history. Meadows describes himself as buzzing about making his first period drama, produced by Element Pictures. The cast led by Michael Socha, with George McKay, Thomas Turgoose and Tom Burke, promises a real roster of the best young British talent.
The Girl Before (tbc)
This BBC-HBO Max co-production boasts a great cast in Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Loki, Black Mirror – pictured above – Belle) and David Oyelowo (Selma, Les Misérables), and a hit psychological thriller as its source material. It’s to be a four-part limited series created by JP Delaney (one of Tony Strong’s pseudonyms), adapted from his novel of the same name. It’s about a woman given the chance to move into a stunning home on the condition that she obeys an exacting set of rules, and presumably things get murder-y from then on in.
The Irregulars (March)
The modern version. The Robert Downey Jr version. The gnome version. The version where Watson is Lucy Liu. Just when you thought the world had no more Sherlock Holmes to give, along comes The Irregulars on Netflix. Written by My Mad Fat Diary‘s Tom Bidwell, this version focuses on the Baker Street gang of teens used as a resource by a sinister version of Dr John Watson, and a Sherlock Holmes whose best days are long behind him. It’s supernatural and horror-tinged, and unfortunately only lasted one season before being cancelled, but did manage to wrap up satisfactorily so don’t let the early ending put you off.
The Last Days of Marilyn Monroe (tbc)
Power, love, loyalty and politics all come to play in Dan Sefton’s (Trust Me) BBC adaptation of Keith Badman’s 2010 book The Final Years Of Marilyn Monroe. Narrowing the time-frame (as the working title suggests) Sefton’s drama will take in the final six months of Monroe’s life until her death in 1962 at the age of 36. We first heard about this one back in April 2019, but since then there’s been no news about casting or filming.
The Midwich Cuckoos (2022)
John Wyndham’s classic 1957 sci-fi is getting a modern TV adaptation courtesy of The Night Manager and Hanna writer David Farr. The eight part series will update the novel to the present day and set the action in a commuter town south of London, where the local women all mysteriously fall pregnant at the same time and give birth to a cohort of very unusual children. The most famous adaptation to date was 1965 cult favourite Village of the Damned (pictured above). Keeley Hawes and Max Beesley will star.
The North Water (September)
Film director Andrew Haigh (Weekend, 45 Years, Lean On Pete) has adapted and directed Ian Maguire’s novel The North Water into a four-part BBC Two drama with an excellent cast. Colin Farrell, Stephen Graham (pictured above), Tom Courtenay, Peter Mullan and Jack O’Connell are all on board – literally so as the series is set on a whaling ship in the Arctic in the 1850s. It’s the story of a disgraced ex-army surgeon who joins a whaling expedition and finds himself “on an ill-fated journey with a murderous psychopath” and in a struggle to survive. Filming took place on the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard in late 2019.
The Offenders (tbc)
From co-creator of The Office and writer-director of fab wrestling film Fighting with my Family, Stephen Merchant (pictured above, and soon to be seen playing killer Stephen Port in ITV true crime drama Four Lives) and Mayans M.C.’s Elgin James is a six-part one-hour comedy The Offenders. A BBC One-Amazon Studios co-production, it follows seven strangers forced together to complete a Community Payback sentence in Bristol. Merchant is joined by Christopher Walken, Darren Boyd and Eleanor Tomlinson in the cast.
The Pembrokeshire Murders (January)
This three-part ITV true crime drama stars Luke Evans as Detective Superintendent Steve Wilkins, who, in 2006, reopened and solved a cold case from the 1980s using new forensic DNA evidence and, bizarrely, an episode of darts-based quiz show Bullseye. Keith Allen plays John Cooper, the man in Wilkins’ sights.
The Pursuit of Love (May)
Emily Mortimer wrote and directed this glorious BBC One adaptation of Nancy Mitford’s 1945 comic romance about an aristocratic family in the interwar period (loosely based on Mitford’s own family, which gained notoriety through her popular novels and her sisters’ scandalous connections to the British Union of Fascists and Adolf Hitler). Downton Abbey‘s Lily James plays lead Linda Radlett in the three-part series.
The Red Zone (tbc)
Sports writers Barney Ronay and Jonathan Liew are behind this six-part half-hour comedy “about football, but also not about football,” which is coming to Netflix in 2021. Director Sam Mendes is executive producing through his Neal Street Productions company. Only announced in late 2020, no casting has yet been confirmed for this one.
The Responder (tbc)
Filming begain in May 2021 on this BBC Two five-part series from new screenwriter and former police officer Tony Schumacher, who’s been mentored by Jimmy McGovern as part of a BBC Writers Room initiative. The Responder will star The Hobbit and Sherlock‘s Martin Freeman as officer Chris, who works a series of night shifts in Liverpool, alongside his rookie new partner Rachel (Adelayo Adedayo). The series is described as funny, tragic, and showing the realities of policing in Britain.
The Rig (tbc)
In November 2020, Amazon Prime Video green-lit this six-episode supernatural thriller from Line of Duty and Bodyguard director John Strickland, written by David Macpherson. It’s due to film in Scotland and is set onboard the Kishorn Bravo oil rig in the North Sea. The crew finds itself marooned on the rig by a mysterious fog that cuts off communication with the outside world. Line of Duty‘s Martin Compston, Owen Teale and Rochenda Sandall will star, alongside Iain Glen, Mark Bonnar and more (see above.) Filming has concluded so the wait shouldn’t be too long for this one.
The Serpent (January)
Ripper Street writer Richard Warlow scripted this eight-part BBC drama about serial killer Charles Sobhraj, Interpol’s most wanted man in the 1970s for the robbery and murder of multiple young Western travellers across South Asia. Tom Shankland (Les Miserables, The City & The City) directs, and A Prophet and The Looming Tower‘s Tahar Rahim played the lead role of Sobhraj, with Jenna Coleman as his girlfriend/accomplice Marie-Andree Leclerc. Read more about the true story that inspired the series here.
The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle (tbc)
Now this sounds like a bit of alright. Adapted from Stuart Turton’s novel of the same name, it’s a seven-part murder mystery coming to Netflix. The story’s a high-concept thriller about a woman trying to solve a murder who keeps waking up in somebody else’s body every time she gets close to the answer. Sophie Petzal (The Last Kingdom, Blood) is adapting it, and the announcement only arrived in late 2020, so don’t expect it for a little while yet. Casting is tba.
The Three (tbc)
Another BBC drama commission based on a book series, The Three, “an international thriller with a supernatural twist”, was announced in late 2017 but there’s been no news since then. The premise of Sarah Lotz’ trilogy sees four planes crash on the same day in four different countries, leaving three children as the miraculous survivors… Wolf Hall’s Peter Straughan was attached as adapting this eight-part drama but as yet, it’s still to appear on his IMDb credits. We’ll keep you posted if more arrives.
The Tourist (tbc)
Producer-writers Harry and Jack Williams (Fleabag, Baptiste, The Missing, Liar) are back with a six-part BBC-HBO Max drama set and filmed in South Australia. The Tourist is an outback noir about a British man pursued through the Australian outback by a tank truck. When the man awakens in a hospital with no memory of who he is or how he got there, his search for answers takes him to some unsettling places. Chris Sweeney (Back to Life) directs, with The Fall‘s Jamie Dornan leading the cast.
The Tower (tbc)
Three-part detective drama The Tower is coming to ITV, starring Game of Thrones‘ Gemma Whelan, Peaky Blinders‘ Emmett Scanlan and Kate & Koji‘s Jimmy Akingbola and The Haunting of Bly Manor‘s Tahirah Sharif. It’s adapted by Homeland‘s Patrick Harbinson from former Met Police officer Kate London’s novel Post-Mortem, and follows the investigation into two deaths and two disappearances from a London tower block.
The Undeclared War (2022)
Channel 4 has teamed up with Peacock to commission this six-part cyber thriller written by Wolf Hall’s Peter Kosminsky. It’s set in 2024, as a team of GCHQ cyber specialists secretly work to fend off a cyber attack on the UK electoral system. There’s an impressive cast, from Mark Rylance (pictured above in Bridge of Spies), to Adrian Lester, Alex Jennings, Simon Pegg, Maisie Richardson-Sellers and newcomer Hannah Khalique-Brown. The commission was only announced in April 2021, so we can expect to see this one next year.
Three Families (May)
This drama based on real-life abortion stories set in Northern Ireland – the only part of the UK where pregnancy termination remains illegal – aired on BBC One in May 2021. Written by Vanity Fair‘s Gwyneth Hughes, who travelled to Northern Ireland to meet the families who inspired the drama, Three Families was produced by the makers of hard-hitting Three Girls and explores the experience of families and loved ones whose lives have been affected by the law in Northern Ireland. It’s currently available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
Time (June)
Three-part prison drama Time is the latest from legendary British screenwriter Jimmy McGovern (Cracker, Accused, Broken), and stars Sean Bean and Stephen Graham. The four-part drama aired in June 2021 and followed the story of Bean’s character Mark, a former teacher in his 50s who finds himself in prison for the first time, and Graham’s character Eric, a prison officer targeted by a dangerously connected inmate. It’s currently available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
Tom Jones (tbc)
Praise for 2018’s Vanity Fair adaptation, scheduled opposite Bodyguard in 2018, was drowned out somewhat by the hit political thriller, but there was plenty of it, and deservingly so. Good news then, that ITV has brought screenwriter Gwyneth Hughes back to tackle another classic novel – Henry Fielding’s 1749 book Tom Jones. Following in the footsteps of the acclaimed Albert Finney-starring 1963 film, and the raucous 1997 version with Max Beasley, expect rollicking fun. The last update we had in November 2019 confirmed that Hughes was mid-writing, but news has been thin on the ground since then.
Too Close (April)
Emily Watson (Chernobyl, Apple Tree Yard, Breaking the Waves) stars in this meaty psychological three-part ITV thriller. Based on the novel of the same name written by Natalie Daniels (the pseudonym of actor-writer Clara Salaman, who’s also behind the screenplay), it’s about a forensic psychiatrist treating a patient who’s committed a heinous crime that she says she doesn’t remember. The two women become locked in a dark struggle of influence and manipulation. Watson stars opposite Denise Gough (pictured above).
Trigger Point (tbc)
Line of Duty‘s Vicky McClure plays bomb disposal expert Lana Washington in this new ITV thriller from the Jed Mercurio stable. Written by Daniel Brierley and executive produced by Mercurio, it’s the story of a front-line bomb disposal pro whose squad is pushed to the limits tackling a terrorist threat to London. Six episodes are on their way, and likely to arrive in early 2022.
Vigil (August)
With a working title of Vigil, a new six-part thriller filmed in Scotland is on its way from the makers of Bodyguard and Line of Duty. Created by Strike‘s Tom Edge, it’s the story of the mysterious disappearance of a Scottish fishing trawler and a death on board a Trident nuclear submarine that brings the police into conflict with the Navy and British security services. It stars Suranne Jones, Rose Leslie, Shaun Evans, Anjli Mohindra, Martin Compston, Paterson Joseph and more.
Viewpoint (April)
This five-part ITV thriller from Rillington Place and Manhunt writer Ed Whitmore and Fleabag director Harry Bradbeer aired in April 2021 (well, most of it did. The final episode was pulled from the schedules and made available as streaming-only following a series of sexual harassment complaints made about its star, Noel Clarke). It was the story of a police surveillance investigation in Manchester following the disappearance of a primary school teacher in the vein of Rear Window and The Lives of Others.
Wahala (2022)
This BBC series, described as “Big Little Lies meets Girlfriends meets Peckham” is adapted from Nikki May’s as-yet-unpublished novel of the same name. It’s about Simi, Ronke and Boo, three 30-something Anglo-Nigerian women living in London whose friendship is shaken by the arrival of the beautiful, charismatic Isobel, with tragic consequences.
White Stork (2022)
Formerly known as Spadehead, White Stork is a 10-episode political drama coming to Netflix courtesy of Eleven, the British production compnay behind Sex Education. Why Didn’t They Ask Evans? (tbc)
It’s the story of a vicar’s son and socialite duo played by Will Poulter and Lucy Boynton, who become amateur detectives and set out to solve a crime when they discover a dying man asking the titular question. Production began in June 2021, with a very fine British comedy cast.
Wolfe (September)
From the creators of Shameless comes six-part crime drama Wolfe, which stars Guerilla‘s Babou Ceesay (pictured above) as an expert forensic pathologist and university professor described as “half genius, half liability”. With a complicated home life and a varied work team including a child prodigy, Wolfe uses his unusual expertise to solve a case of the week. Amanda Abbington, Natalia Tena, Naomi Yang, Adam Long and Shaniqua Okwok co-star.
You (tbc)
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
We might expect the working title of this one to change to avoid confusion with the Netflix stalker story of the same name, but as it stands, You will be an eight-part thriller coming to Sky. Filming started in June 2021 in the UK and Morocco on this adaptation of the Zoran Drvenkar novel, which tells the story of Tara O’Rourke, a woman on the run across Europe after committing a deadly crime. She’s pursued by a dangerous gangster and a serial killer known only as ‘The Traveller’. The Capture (pictured above) writer-director Ben Chanan has written the adaptation.
Machine Baby
Additional Information
Your Brief Bio: I'm a blogger, creative writer and song writer with an inquisitive mind and a wild, wild, wild imagination.
Submission Category: -The-Future-of-Africa
Tweet-Style Story Summary: An overpopulated Nigeria where parents are forced to have a robot child instead of a real one; and where reproduction is a crime punishable by death, a young couple find out they are expecting a baby.
Full Story: MACHINE BABY Our first Machine Baby came in 2047, when I was just 10. It came in a big brown box that said, “Fragile, Handle with Care”. I watched with fear from behind the sitting room curtain, as my parents unboxed the robot. “Bunmi, come say hi to your little brother”, my mother called. But I wouldn’t budge. I’d never seen one up close but the sight was absolutely terrifying. It was big…almost as tall as me. Its face was chubby and almost lifelike. It could make some weird gurgling noises which I guess babies are supposed to sound like but it couldn’t talk, instead it had written prompts on a screen underneath its shirt. It looks just like a Tele-Tubby, that’s what my 60-something year old grandmother said. I had no idea what that meant, but she says I lot of crazy things so I wouldn’t bother. M-Babies are updated every year. They come a little bigger with the previous years’ memory programmed into them. By the 5th year, TOBI as my parents fondly call it, no longer had a screen prompt. It could talk in a high whiny electronic voice. I found it extremely annoying but my parents loved it. One thing my parents don’t know is TOBI and all other M-Babies are actually spies sent to monitor civilians by the government and keep us from escaping the country, not like there’s anywhere to escape to. But I doubt if my parents would even mind if they find out the government spies on them. You see, my parents love our almighty government so much. They rescued us from the Sun and the Great Famine. It all started in 2030, when our ozone layer kept getting thinner faster than it could repair itself, major parts of the world became too hot to plant crops or even live. A lot of people died, more than half the country. That was when our leaders, THE CREATORS arose. They invented, a giant square shield, which was like an artificial ozone layer, it could keep away most of the harmful rays but not all, therefore food became scarce. With the help of the military, the CREATORS overcame the civilian government. Nigeria became a closed country called New Era and we stopped communicating with other countries. Reproduction became a crime because there was simply not enough food and resources for extra mouths, therefore all adults had to undergo sterilisation. While the children were left alone till the maturity age of 18, to reduce the chances of total genocide. I was just a baby when all these happened, but somehow I managed to survive. My paternal grandparents and maternal grandfather weren’t so lucky. Instead of kids, our merciful Creators invented M-Babies and each family had the right to purchase one machine baby. My parents wanted another child so they worked extra hard at the Crop registry as statisticians till they could afford their very own M-Baby. Sometimes I hate my parents, they seem so content in this world; my grandma told me stories about the old world and how beautiful it was. Some I believe but most of them are just too good to be true. She talks about craving things like sweet frozen water in a cone, she calls it ice-cream, such indulgence! Grandma sometimes gets depressed for me because the only thing I’d have to call my own is a robot baby. But you can’t miss something you never had, and I’ve also vowed never to get an M-Baby. But despite life in the New Era being stifling, it’s the only world I know and I have a good reason why I look up to each new day in New Era, Nonso. My lifelong friend and now love of my life. We’ve been friends since we were kids, and lovers since I turned 14. Nonso spent most of his childhood battling for his parents’ affection with their M-Baby. He has a theory that the CREATORS want to wipe away all children and create only M-Kids instead but I think if they wanted to kill us they would have done that a long time ago. Nonso and I live in the same sector so we attend the same Sector School but we have to pretend like we are strangers. Our classrooms are divided into two, male seats and female seats. So despite the fact that we see each other every day, we are not allowed to relate with or even have conversations with the opposite sex. We’ve been sneaking out to meet every week since we were 14, but we haven’t had a chance to meet up for the past month. To prevent stealing, a crime also punishable by death, security has become extra tight in our sector because we process all the food grown in all other sectors. After dinner, which usually consists of TOBI yammering away with my parents and grandma dozing in her chair, I wear my grey coveralls and boots, and lie in bed wide awake. I can’t leave my house immediately because unknown to my parents and most New Eranians, all M-Babies carry out a general sweep of the house at midnight. Like clockwork, TOBI walks into my room a few minutes after midnight. I close my eyes and even out my breathing while he scans my room. It turns to leave then pauses at the door as if suspecting I was still awake. I quickly throw in a heavy snore, convinced, it exits the room. I wait a few more minutes for TOBI to go to its room and re-boot or “go to sleep” like my parents’ like to call it. Just in case I make a dummy of myself as a decoy, lower my room window and climb out as quietly as I could. Nonso’s house is just a few blocks away from mine but we can’t meet there, it’s too dangerous. We have to meet at the millet mill close to the edge of the Sector. After several minutes of running, crawling and sneaking in the dark, I arrive at the Mill to find Nonso waiting for me. “You’re late, Bunmi” “Yeah, I know. TOBI seemed a bit suspicious so I had to wait a bit more, how long have you been waiting” “I just got here. I’ve missed you”, he said before pulling me close for a long deep kiss. A few eternities later, we pulled away and looked into each other’s eyes. On other nights, we would usually talk about our theories on the CREATORS and what our lives would have been like if we were living in the old Nigeria. But tonight felt different, it’s like something has changed between us. We start kissing again, passionately this time. Nonso’s lips were soft and firm and moved slowly over my lips, I felt short stabs of pleasure travel all the way from my lips down to my core. He grabbed me by the waist and we fell onto a sack of flour. We couldn’t see in the dark but he knew just where to touch me, almost instinctively. We spent the next several minutes exploring each other’s bodies until I couldn’t take it anymore, our clothes disappeared and our bodies melted in a dance as old as time itself. We instinctively found a rhythm and kept riding the wave till we reached a crest. We both lay on the sacks of flour, spent; we lay there in comfortable silence and didn’t utter a word. After an hour, we both got dressed and exchanged a quick kiss, then said our goodbyes. The next month, my period did not come. I didn’t think anything about it. And I completely ignored it, until two weeks later when a classmate of mine Hauwa, was caught by their M-Baby having sex in her house with a boy from a nearby sector. They both died a horrible public death to teach the rest of us a lesson. That was when I got really scared. I looked forward to the next two weeks hoping to get my period but it still did not come. I started to panic. The next day in class I risked being suspected by the teacher and walked up to Nonso’s desk in class and walked right past him back to my seat. I hoped and silently prayed that he would get the message that we have to see urgently tomorrow. I leave the house as usual and hurry towards the Millet Mill. I hear some soft noises and quickly hide behind the tall grass on the path behind the mill. Several armed security men are pacing around the mill. Suddenly someone grabbed me from behind with a hand over my mouth as I tried to scream. A few seconds later my eyes adjusted to the darkness and I recognized Nonso. “It’s me, we need to go somewhere safer. The mill has been compromised”, he whispered as my heart pounded wildly. He holds my hand and leads me through the tall grass towards an unknown location. We walk and walk, taking several turns until we get to a small clearing in the bush. Nonso turns to me and looks earnestly into my eyes, my hands cupped within his. “Let’s elope” “What?!” I shrieked and jerked my hands away from him, “Are you crazy? We’ll get killed if we’re caught. Have you forgotten what happened to Hauwa and James? They were publicly electrocuted, in front of their families and entire sector”. “Bunmi, I want to be with you. I want to have real babies with you. I want to be able to see you and talk to you. I thought that was what you wanted too. Wait, why did you signal me yesterday?” “It was for something else”, I hear myself saying with a small voice. “What is it? Bunmi tell me. Did TOBI see something?” “No”, I swallow, “I think I’m pregnant. I was hoping you’d know how we could make it go away” I watch Nonso freeze in front of me. He was so still, he almost looked like a statue. “You’re pregnant with our baby and the first thing you want to do his kill ‘him’? This is not a thing or a machine, he’s a human being. Bunmi why?” “Why?!” I cry out in frustration. “Because I don’t want to die. There’s no way we’re going to make it out of here and even if we do, there’s no life out there, we’ll waste away and die.” I burst into tears while Nonso gathers me up into his arms. “Bunmi, I love you and I’d never let anything happen to you. There’s something I’ve not been truthful about, but I have no choice but to tell you now. Or rather, show you.” He lets go of me and takes a few steps forward to kneel on the ground. Then lifts up a patch of dry grass to reveal a secret door in the ground. He knocks 7 times, twice, twice and thrice. He does this three times and then the ground opened up. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Nonso took my hand and pulls me inside the gaping hole in the ground. At first everywhere is dark then about a tiny thousand blinking lights come on. Startled by the brightness, I cover my eyes. “Christmas lights”, says Nonso. “It used to be a holiday in the old world, like CREATORS day but a thousand times better”. He said referring to the annual holiday we dedicate to honouring the CREATORS, we also get an extra meal. “Meet Hakim”, he says referring to the tall dark boy of about 20 that opened the door for us. “Where’s this place, how is this possible?” I ask, more to myself than to anyone. But Nonso replies: “This is THE BASEMENT. There’s so much I have to tell and show you. Come along” We walk through a small tunnel and it led to a wide room. There are many people there, about 40 of them. There seem to be many other people in other rooms, we can’t see them but can hear them shuffling about, making weapons and fight-training. A dark tall man walks towards me, Nonso and Hakim. “This is my girlfriend, Bunmi”. Nonso introduces me to the man who looks like he’s in his late twenties. “Bunmi, this is Dayo, our leader”. “Dayo, Bunmi is pregnant”, Nonso explains to him and pulls over my top, even though I’m not showing any signs of pregnancy yet. All of a sudden, we hear muted sounds, gunfire. “What’s that on your belly?” Dayo asked, “What?” I looked at my stomach only to see a small chip taped to the underside of my top. “No. no. no. NO!” I cried, nausea washing over me. “What’s going on, Nonso.” Dayo asks. “That f**king machine baby! She’s been bugged. Our base has been compromised! Hakim take her. Make sure she’s safe. I’ll find you when this is all over”. “Nonso where are you going? Nonso!” “Don’t worry, I’ll be fine just go. GO! Wait for me, I’ll join you soon.” “I’ve been waiting for the past six months. Several of us escaped from New Era safely that night. There were a few other pregnant girls too, some more heavy than mine. We keep moving and hiding from the government’s drones that are searching. My baby keeps growing every day, I hope his father gets back in time to see him, I hope he can find us. But the war has been going on for so long I barely have any hope left. Hakim explained it all, how the ozone layer has been healing and the CREATORS kept it secret from us to keep us under control. How Nonso has been a major factor in the revolution, how they have been stealing weapons right under the noses of the M-Babies. But one day the New Era will be defeated, and maybe we can all come to live together in a new and better Nigeria. A Nigeria that seeks to grow and not repress. A new era both in name and in truth”Author : Oyindamola Oluwashola Abbatty
