Analyzing the Circus & Biblical Design Elements in Hellaverse: Beelzebub

The Queen Bee of Gluttony herself, Queen Beelzebub!

Honestly, when I first saw her design, I was so surprised to see that she was a fox. I mean, she's the Lord of the Flies, right? Why is she a fox? Then her design grew on me, and now I can also talk about the demonology references, the biblical references, and the Divine Comedy references.

Why Beelzebub is a Fox

The first reason that she is a fox is bcuz Vivzie wanted to make a reference to her Die Young video, and to separate her from Hellhounds.

Then there's the lore reasons she's a fox!

In a lot of fables, foxes are tricksters, always cunning and using sweet talk to get what they want. And in so many of those fables, it's always to get food (looking at you, Aesop). Farmers also hated them because they come in and streal baby animals, like chicks and small baby lambs, to take away and eat. This has also made them seen as being greedy and, well, gluttonous. Beelzebub herself even mentions that Belphagor has to lock away her party drugs so Bee doesn't come in and steal them.

OH! Foxes are also tricksters, I've said that! But that also fits Bee so well! She says she's a honeybee, but bees have two sets of wings, while she only has one. And I think this is because of how flies are seen. Flies are seen as greedy, obnoxious, and really gross pests. They steal the food from others and will drink and eat anything. But honeybees are seen as hard workers who make delicious food. So, it's not that bad if she was to lean into being a Bee more than a Fly. Even if it's a little misleading, it's not harming anyone.

She also does somewhat trick the guests at her party. She starts Cotton Candy with, "I'm what you need," before switching to "I'm what you want, not what you need." She starts the song saying that gluttony is what they need, but then by the time she says it's what they want, they already believe it's what they need. It's like how the foxes in these fables always tell the truth after they've lied and got what they wanted.

Demon Aspects

She's Beelzebub! Lord of the Flies!

Before I do this, fun fact: while Beelzebub is mostly male in mythology, he was said to sometimes change his appearance to female to trick men into lusting after him (Gluttony and Lust were very tied together in The Lesser Key of Solomon). So, Bee being female isn't actually that out of the ordinary!

BUG WARNING

Anyways, biblically accurate Bee. Aren't they cute?

Alright, ik it seems difficult to compare this to her ultra fem furry design, but hear me out! Bee shares the same antenna as Beelzebub, and her ears are in the same shape as his abdomen (they're also shaped like Beehives). They also both have six limbs. That's pretty much it. But there's other stuff that relates her to him!

(Ik I said flies only have one set of wings and Biblical Bee has 2 and is a fly, but that's because he's the king of the flies. He's going to be extra)

Bee herself acts more like a fly than a bee. While she can conjure up food wherever she goes, she relies on the people in her parties and in her ring to work for her. She needs the guests to have a good time so she can "get high on all of this tasty energy," and while she advertises Beelzejuice and can probably make some herself, I don't think she's the sole provider of it. Ozzie makes sex toys, but he has an entire factory and workers to help him with it. I bet Bee has the same thing, but she doesn't help out with making it as much. She'd rather sit around and indulge in it than help out in making it. Like a fly stealing the hard-earned honey made by bees, which, in this case, would be the hellhounds.

Also, yeah, that. She's the Lord of the Flies, but she's a canine. I think it's because she's queen of the Hellhounds. Beelzebub being s fly matches his subjects, but Beelzebub being a Bee here in most fan designs wouldn't fit with her being their queen, especially since she's shown to be more involved in her subjects than the rest of the sins. So, think of the Hellhounds as the flies and her as their lord.

(Not me hating the fan designs, tho. I absolutely love Bee Beelzebub)

Also, wanna know why hellhounds are in the Gluttony ring? It's because Cerberus, the OG Hellhound, is in the Gluttony Ring in Dante's Inferno.

Circus Elements

Vivziepop herself stated that each sin represents a Circus Act and that Beelzebub is an animal tamer, which is why she has so many hoops that she flies through in her mansion.

Her being an animal tamer also makes sense away from her design and house. Many animal trainers train the animals using food or something else they want. Beelzebub doesn't train the Hellhounds to do anything, but she does use food and alcohol to attract them to her parties and watch her perform.

I also want to compare Beelzebub's design to stereotypical Animal Tamer costumes.

Beelzebub's fluffy shoulders remind me of the cuffs on stereotypical tamer costumes, snd the open chest and shorts is present in a lot of them as well. The crown present in her design is a reference to her being the Queen of Gluttony, but it could also be how tamers are now the "kings/queens" over the animals they tame, especially lions, since most she known for taming lions and lions are seen as the Kings of the Jungle.

Also, while most sins are animals, Beelzebub resembles an animal the most because of her specific act.

So here’s the news! Lucifer’s shorter than usual, Charlie is super fluffy, Vaggie’s pissed and no longer ditzy-dizzy, Rosie has bunny ears and a cotton tail, and I’m still deciding what to do to Alastor!

Also I did all of those things with the help of Beelzebub and Belphagor in making the potions permanent for 24 hours. Not even angelic magic, cartoon logic, or shapeshifting can stop the effects.

Oh and I just made your tongue so long it doesn’t fit in your mouth.

Thoughts on Queen Bee

It was good. I enjoyed myself. Definitely one of the weaker episodes, but it wasn’t TRYING to be anything groundbreaking, so it’s fine. I was able to adjust my expectations in just the right way after Viv tweeted about it. She reminded us that this was gonna be a style-over-substance episode, and that’s what we got! A LOTTA style, and not much substance.....(unless you count the ones Blitzo was running on all episode)

The only thing groundbreaking is Kesha, who it turns out, is a pretty good VA? And having a song actually written by her, and performed by a DARN GOOD sound-alike. The lyrics of “Cotton Candy” aren’t amazing, but it SOUNDS great, and that’s what matters for party songs. XD I’ve had it stuck in my head all day.

It’s cool to have another complete song outta Helluva. We need more of those in season 2. “House Of Asmodeus” spoiled me XD

As for Bee herself, I didn’t really like her design all that much at first, cuz she didn’t look anything like I’d imagine Beelzebub to look in Helluva (compared to Ozzie who I thought was a good interpretation of how people usually envision Asmodeus). She’s not ugly or anything, and I love her color palette, but it felt like Viv was more focused on the Die Young callback than making her look like the Sin when designing her. But apparently, there ARE some things that she’s kept in mind and played around with (such as “Lord of the Flies” becoming “Queen Bee” - even though she should technically be a princess since the other Sins are princes, it rolls off the tongue better here), and she has a more monstrous form that we get to see. I’m pretty sure I’ll like her more as I get used to her. She just wasn’t what I expected.

There’s not really a lot to talk about story-wise. Like I said, style over substance. “Visual spectacle” to cap the season off. I like that it’s a happier second half to Ozzie’s. Both have parties run by a Sin, both have big songs, but the mood is completely different, like they’re symbolizing the different parts of Helluva’s first season - the dramatic, character-driven part, and the fun, humorous part. It’s a shame that the legal issues held this episode back so long that it can’t be considered Ozzie’s second half anymore, cuz I really do like the idea of the two episodes being foils to each other.

But uh, anyway! The only real meat in this story is just a few sweet moments between Loona and Blitzo. And also Loona being SUCH a mood. Me at parties. Always. XD It was also cool to see Tex again, since I like him, and Bee gets points for actually seeming pretty chill, especially compared to Ozzie. But that’s really it. The comedy wasn’t even really that amazing. The Dennis scene was the only time I really laughed, but I’ll take what I can get.

The delays also screwed the episode over slightly. I DO still feel bad for Blitzo, but if the episode had been released in order, I would’ve been a lot more scared for his mental state. It does lose a LITTLE impact when we know he’s gonna recover (or at least, mostly recover).

A teeny bit of woldbuilding here too- It was also cool to see a bit of the Gluttony ring - yeah, just one location, but it gets me curious to see more of it someday. We also get references to Satan and Belphagor, which means that.....there’s only one left. Only one Sin we haven’t heard from. The one who’s, fittingly, from the one ring we haven’t been to yet - Envy. I wanna see the Envy ring now. What’re they gonna do with that place? It can’t even be green! Greed is green! How does a place run by envy look? I guess the ring will be.....aquatic-themed? Maybe? I’m worried that we probably won’t be meeting the man himself due to involvement in Hazbin, but I wanna see the ring at least. Surprise me, Helluva! You already did that last episode with Sloth looking actually neat and appealing, pfffff- But yeah, that’s a long-term hope. Let’s actually get to Mammon first. One thing at a time.

S-sorry for the tangent, but yeah, this episode really doesn’t have a lot to talk about. I’m done now. XD It was fun to watch, but not one of the best I’ve seen from the show!

Head canons/ powers for belph

When they're trying to calm someone or help someone they'll pick them up and bring them close to their wool / fur : reason being is it's smell varies from person to person. If someone's comfort scent is vanilla then Belph will smell like vanilla, if it's cotton candy then they can change their scent to that. This is due to the fact that the wax on their head has no actual smell but stores them instead

They can supresss bad dreams but only if they're holding someone it takes a lot of energy from Belph to do something like this so they'll need to stay seated for the vast majority of someone's rest cycle. However there are times they can move around

Drug creation: belph is capable of creating drugs with absolute ease. They're extremely intelligent and can get medication created within the hour.

Body manipulation: belph for a short period of time is capable of splitting themselves into four separate beings , this normally only occurs during great moments of danger however due to how exhausting it becomes. Though it is possible they'll do it so someone can """count sheep"""

Full demonic transformation: much like all the other demonic entities around belph is constantly in a half form. They are capable of turning into a full demonic being at will. ( image under cut) their flame becomes larger and there are eyes that appear to be around them. Depending on their anger their horns will continue to grow ( up to 14 inches )

Waxed frame: belphagors legs always look like their melting together, they're capable of changing that look at will, despite melting like a candle would Belph doesn't feel any discomfort or pain. They can stop this process whenever they want or when they're in cold temperatures , this melting also helps them keep their internal body temperature cool.

Lucifer

Casually strolling with you throughout the park with his arm locked with yours

Buys the two of you a cone of cotton candy for the two of you can share

Tends to take you on more isolated rides like the carousel or boat rides

At the end of the night, Lucifer carries the prizes he won for you as your pinkies are linked together while you enjoy a caramel apple. “Maybe next time the carnival is in town, we can make it a tradition to visit together.”

Mammon

Blushy mess when he offers his hand to you, though as you walk around the carnival together he gets comfortable and intertwines his fingers with yours

Whenever you show the slightest interest to a ride or game, Mammon is immediately making y’all do it

The two of you would be riding rollercoasters beating who will scream first, playing games while playfully trying to sabotage the other, sharing snacks and laughing at the other if they’re messy

“Hey human!” Mammon says as he shoves a plushie of a crow in your arms. “I got you something, birds of a feather flock together or however that saying goes.”

Levithan

Saw in romance animes of the protagonist taking their love interest to the carnival and having a great time then kissing at the end, he wants to recreate that with you

He’s not really taken to any of the games though manages to win a couple of gold fishes for you two from a ring toss game

You two go on rides and eat some treats, Levi comes out of his shell and starts genuinely having fun and laughing along side you

Would definitely recite some anime line from one of the romance animes before leaning in though chickening out last second

Satan

He’d prefer a cafe or library date though it’s not everyday the carnival is in town, he’s happy to see you pointing at rides and listening to which rides you want to go on first

Wins you a unicorn plushie saying it’s for good luck, though he wants to give you something to remember this day

Whenever he loses one of the carnival games or someone bumps into him, he usually would explode with rage though your presence next to him comforts him and keeps him calm

As the two of you go to ride to ride, playing game after game, Satan stops pretending to be out of breath from carrying all the prizes around. “Can you help me carry something? It’s getting quite heavy.” Satan says and as you extend your hand to grab something to help carry, he holds your hand and interlocks your fingers together.

Asmodeus

Thought it would be a cute date idea to go to the carnival since it’s in town, though the two of you are wearing corresponding outfits

His arm would be locked around yours while the two of you walk around enjoying some snacks and pointing out the rides and games you two want to go on

The two of you get on some rides though the wind would blow Asmo’s hair everywhere and he’d insist that he finds a mirror first to fix his hair before going to the next ride

He’d win you a plushie and jokingly the two of you would refer it to your child or the third wheel friend

As you two walk around, Asmo spots a photo booth and pulls your along. He excitedly sets up for pictures, before he turns to you and says “I had to snag you away from everyone staring at my hon. You are more radient than any of those carny lights, almost blinding me from how bright you are.”

Beelzebub

He heard the carnival was in town and immediately knew to take you along

Beel has to restrain himself to not wander for food and leave you by your lonesome, though you two end up getting a couple of treats

Easily wins any game and gets you any prize you want, though absolutely melts when you offer to win him a prize, he cheers you on from the background as you lay

As the two of you walk, hand in hand, Beel turns to you, “when I’m with you some part of me feels full, heh maybe it’s because you’re so sweet.”

Belphagor

It’s a carnival there’s going to be cows outside, though Belphie definitely adores carnivals

He’s known as the avatar of sloth but he always gets on the adrenaline boosting rides, daring you to come with him

After getting some snacks, taking photos and wining some prizes Belphie just wants to snuggle against the crook of your neck

“I’m glad it’s just us two, everyone else would be so loud and obnoxious. None of them would let me rest on them like you do.” Belphie says as he pulls you close to cover you with his jacket a bit

Diavolo

He doesn’t tend to go to things like carnivals since he’s busy so he’s ecstatic when you agree to come along

You’re both just going with the flow and doing what seems right, you both end up sitting at a bench so Diavolo can recover from a ride

You also have to deal with people seeing and noticing Diavolo and either taking pictures or wanting to approach him, though Diavolo will make sure to get those photos erased one way or another and stop having people bother you

“Thank you for accompanying me, even if it got a little busy at the end. Maybe I should hold a private carnival just for us two.” Diavolo says, leaving you unsure if he’s joking or not as you walk along side him

Barbatos

Quite surprised to manage to have some time off so he can spend with you

Strolls around the carnival with yours locked together as he chuckles seeing you excitedly pointing to the next thing you want to do

Barbs manages to win a skeletal bat plushie for you and rather not get carnival food since he could prepare something better at the castle though you insist

As the two of you are linked arm in arm walking out of the carnival, Barbatos looks at you a little hesitant but speaks. “I don’t know about you but the carnival food was very unappetizing. I could make something for us at the castle if you don’t mind coming over, I’m sure the young master would be happy for the company.”, you look at Barbatos a bit quizzically before he clears his throat. “I would be happy for the company.” He corrects himself.

Simeon

Heard about the carnival from Luke, though Luke was busy with something since Barbatos agreed to show home a new recipe so Simeon brought you along as a date

Constantly has his arm linked with yours, stuffing your hand in his pockets or linking pinkies as you both stroll around

You two would go on different rides, get some treats and even go to a photo booth to take some pictures though Simeon is a bit unsure how to use one so the photos will come out a bit blurry or a weird filter would be placed

As you two get on some more rides and share snacks, Simeon would smile fondly looking at you. “Perhaps we should come here whenever the carnival is in town, or shall we go someplace else for our next date? Maybe you take the photos next time?

Okay okay here it goes.

His name is Lilis Cameron, originally named Marigold (all my mcs are trans guys like me).

Years ago Diavolo needed a vacation, he was exhausted. Without telling Barbartos or Lucifer, he went to the human world disguised as 'Damien'. He hooked with a mortal woman named Katherine at a Halloween party, where she was dressed like an angel. He returned to the devildom a few days later.

Timeskip. Katherine has Lilis, and is a horrible mother. Emotionally and Physically abusive, especially when lilis comes out. She has multiple other boyfriends, all who hurt lilis in varying ways. Lilis tried to run away...only to be chosen for the exchange program.

Now he looks nothing like diavolo, but when reading his file Dia briefly thinks his last name is familiar. The story goes in as normal.

About him. Lilis is sweet and kind to the brothers, basically becoming their therapist. Although he's extremely anxious, with a stutter. He's autistic, has adhd and ocd, and ptsd, causing panic attacks. He has depression and anxiety too. On top of all that, he has anorexia too, almost severely. He loves cute and soft things, has a bit if a caffeine addiction, and loves hugs abd cuddles, not even lucifer can resist his puppy eyes. He's 5'3, with big blue eyes under round glasses, freckles, abd has big fluffy pink hair like cotton candy.

Of course the whole Belphagor thing happens.

And when it's revealed Lilis is a long distance descendant of Lillith, something else is revealed. Lilis has demon blood.

One day Lilis is out on his own, and is cornered by a group of demons. He tries to summon lucifer, who he's closest to, but is thrown into a wall. Because of fight kr flight, his demon form emerges. And he looks almost identical to diavolo, except his features are pink.

Lucifer finally arrives at the scene ,to find demon form lilis standing over two dead demons, in hysterics because he didn't nean to, he'd never kill anyone! Lucifer takes him to Barbatos and Solomon...who reveal to him what they've known for a while. Lucifer realizes he's been dating his boss's son, and Lilis faints from all the stress.

Waking up to a giant bear hug from Diavolo, babbling about how many christmases and birthdays he's missed. And then promptly gkimg into a rage when he finds out about lilis's mother.

With Demons

Lucifer - Dislikes/Tolerates - The moment she stepped foot in Devildom, the two always had awkward tension between each other. Felicity hated his bossy, ‘better than everyone else’ attitude, while Lucifer was frustrated by her stubbornness and inability to cooperate. (Reminded him way too much of Satan). After the situation with Belphagor died down, the two started getting along a bit better, but still have their occasional fights. (I also have an AU where Lucifer has a crush on Felicity, and it’s sort of the unrequited feelings thing, but that’s for another day LOL)

Mammon - Dislikes/Tolerates/Friends - If there was someone who she was more frustrated with than Lucifer, it was Mammon. She hated how he would follow her around like a lost puppy, trying to get her attention. They wouldn’t necessarily argue— more like Mammon would make some kind of dickish comment, and she’d give him a death glare to shut him up. Similar to Lucifer, the two started getting along better, but much sooner. While she still gets fairly frustrated with him, she does appreciate his company sometimes. Plus, she loves teasing him.

Leviathan - Friends - Levi never thought he would actually like hanging out with a normie, but Felicity surprised him. She was actually interested in his hobbies and even asked if he could teach her how to play games with him. It was rough at first, with him being a smarmy ass every time he won and her throwing pillows in his face anytime he tried to tease her. She eventually got the hang of it and their matches in different games became fairly balanced— she even managed to beat him a few times.

Satan - Friends - (The Fuck Lucifer duo, sorry Belph you’re not cool enough) The two were surprised by how similar they were— Felicity could relate to his frustrations, as she had her own anger management issues that stemmed from her childhood. They get along very well and hang out together quite a bit, usually reading books or watching soap operas together.

Asmodeus - Crush/Close Friends - She didn’t think she’s get along with Asmo, especially since he was just as clingy as Mammon. However, unlike Mammon, he would actually give her space. She also appreciated how he would always hype her up whenever she’d feel insecure— giving her compliments about how beautiful she was, even when he found out she was transgender. They have a sort of fuck buddy situation (though that'd probably come to an end when she and Beelz start dating) and they're seen hanging out very frequently.

Beelzebub - Crush/Loves - Beelzebub was the first one of the brothers that she actually felt comfortable around. He reminded her a bit of her brother, someone who may not be the brightest, but you could tell meant well and cared about their family. She fell pretty hard for him and was a bit nervous about asking him out— not wanting to ruin their friendship. Around Season 2 is when they would start dating. They’re the type of sugary sweet couple that’s always seen holding hands or cuddling— much to Beelz’s brothers’ annoyance.

Belphegor - Dislikes/Tolerates - Let’s just say– him tricking her and trying to kill her didn’t make Felicity too happy. If the obey me devs allowed it, she would have absolutely beaten his ass. It especially pissed her off when he tried to brush off what he did all because she was related to Lilith. She made it very clear to him that she hasn’t and probably would never forgive him. Despite being related to Lilith by blood, Belph still didn’t like Felicity— she came off as arrogant to him, and her constant anger and yelling would just give him a headache. Their relationship got better as time went on, but not by much. The only reason they tried to fix the bridges they burnt was because she started dating Beelz and he didn’t like how they would always glare daggers at each other.

Diavolo - Acquaintances/Indifferent - She doesn't know how to feel about the Demon Lord. He's a nice guy for sure, but considering he was royalty and had a responsibility to take care of everyone in the Devildom, she expected him to be a bit more responsible. She's aware that she could make a bit too judgmental towards him, it's mostly due to her distrust of people with higher authorities. She still remains respectful towards him, but that's mostly because she doesn't have a choice LMAO

Barbatos - Suspicious - She isn't really sure why she's so suspicious of Barbatos, considering he's usually helpful and respectful towards her. In her eyes... he just looks like the kind of guy who will stab you in the back.

With Angels

Simeon - Respects/Friends - Their interactions have been pretty lukewarm. They got along fairly well and Felicity never had any problems with him, which is a mutual feeling for him.

Luke - Close Friends - Not much to say other than he reminds Felicity a lot of herself when she was younger. He'd always invite her to make desserts together, and has even told her that he looks up to her like an older sister sometimes.

Michael - Suspicious - It's the same reason why she's iffy about Diavolo, but multiplied by 50. Something about how Luke goes on about him just gives her a bad feeling.

With Humans

Solomon - Respects/Close Friends - She pretty much stuck with Solomon for her first week in Devildom, since he was the first person who didn't make her feel uneasy. She appreciates his advice and company a lot and if anyone tries to mess with him, Felicity would have some words.

Stuff that Can be Considered a Negative About the Devildom: While most of the demons she's met and come across have been decent enough, there's been others that have been less than welcoming. The amount of fights she's been tempted to start cause one of them started spewing about how weak of a human she was is too many she can count on two hands.
