Swindle meets Blurr for the first time.

Swindle throws his coat over the back of a chair and waves at the bartender for a drink.  It's been a long day.  Too long for Swindle's taste.  These are the hard days. The days that throw into question all the money that mecha has brought flowing into Swindle's accounts.  Because these are the days where he actually has to work to ensure that money keeps flowing – to ensure that mecha doesn't crumble into darkened ruins.

Swindle sighs as his drink is placed in front of him.  Investors meetings and government supervisors.  What a fiasco. 

When the reports had first made their way up from engineering all the way to his desk (well Onslaught's desk, technically, and then Onslaught had brought it to his desk), he had hardly believed what he was reading.  A way to make a mech that could move at speeds beyond what had been speculated to be the upper limits of maneuverability. Mecha would be the first, the best.  Way ahead of any possible competition.  This mech would ensure that mecha was the name in every headline and the front of every government contract for this war.

It all seemed so clear, so simple that Swindle had had his doubts.  The science he didn't care about.  At the end of the day, the engineering reports were all just theories.  And Swindle had learned long ago never to bet on something that seemed too good to be true (though he would on occasion strongly encourage others to do just that; their loss, his gain).

But then engineering had actually produced a prototype of their mythical mech design.  And everything had become very real very fast.  Investors were swarming.  Governments were watching.  Things had been looking so good.  Until today.

Today had been the first series of prototype tests.  A disastrous series of prototype tests.  Because the one thing neither engineering nor Swindle had accounted for was that a mech was useless without a pilot. 

And the pilots in testing hadn't gotten anywhere near close to the prototype's full potential before losing control.  Every.  Single.  One of them. 

The investors hadn't been impressed.  Swindle might have still been able to salvage the situation, flash some reassuring smiles and talk them round that this was just an early design and there was still so much potential for the future.  But then the last pilot had crashed the mech so badly that fires had to be put out – literally – across the testing hangar.

The investors and the government contractors hadn't liked that in the slightest.  There had been talks of safety standards and getting external regulators involved.  Swindle had spent the rest of the day and into the night, putting out the metaphorical fires that burned on long after the remains of the crash had been hauled away and the pilot had been patched up.  Damage control. 

He had at least managed to forestall a final judgement on shutting down the experimental mech technology.  But, that didn't leave a lot of opportunity and came with its own set of challenges.  Namely challenges in the shape of Shockwave.  Shockwave, who had offered to solve all of Swindle's problems, make them disappear under the guise of scientific and medical advancements.  Shockwave, who believed the only way forward was to not just to push to the limits of humanity, but to surpass them.  That his science could do that and more.  Make humans into pilots that were faster, stronger, more durable.  Pilots that could be brought back from even the brink of death.  At what cost?  Swindle often wondered.  At what point, if Shockwave had his way, would he take the human out of humanity?

Swindle needs this opportunity, needs to overcome these challenges.  He might have been skeptical of the new mech feasibility at the start.  But today…today they had come close enough he could already see it – see the extra zeros piling onto the end of his bank account, see the way mecha would be transformed by that kind of spotlight and publicity.

He stares into the depths of the glass for a moment, then takes a long slow drink.  It's as he sets the glass down that the car pulls up outside the bar.  The stop itself is a spectacle – made with such speed and precision that Swindle notices half the bar turning to watch along with him.  The car itself is enough to make Swindle whistle under his breath.  And then the driver steps out, crosses the few steps of pavement, and enters the bar.

Swindle isn't sure he believes in a higher power.  And even if he did, he isn't sure what it is that he ever would have done in his life to earn this kind of miracle.  As for luck – Swindle doesn't count on luck.

But maybe that's what this is – a good turn of circumstance.  Because the man who just walked through the door is Blurr – the Blurr of F1 racing fame.  Easily the fastest F1 racer in history.  Possibly the greatest the sport has ever seen or ever will see. 

The man hasn't been seen around this part of town before – hasn't been seen much at all since his last racing crash outside of recorded promotions and scheduled interviews.  And now more than half the bar is staring as they recognize who's just walked through the door, some people starting to get up and move forwards – forming a small crowd that Blurr has to make his way through.

In spite of himself, he finds himself being drawn closer as he watches the gleaming smiles that Blurr throws around the bar – smiles that seem genuine enough to even reach the man's eyes.  Swindle watches Blurr sign autographs, pose for selfies, and shake hands – waiting for the moment when the man's patience grows thin, when the smile starts to slip and he starts to push his way faster through the crowd.  Only it never comes.

Swindle smiles as he brings his drink back to his lips.  His own patience is wearing thin by the time Blurr finally reaches the bar, though he keeps the smile stretched across his face.  Swindle watches how Blurr sits, how he orders his drink, his posture, his mannerisms -- sizing up the man and his movements.  He knows of Blurr, but he doesn't know Blurr.  And he will only get one chance at this.  That he's getting a chance at all, still leaves Swindle slightly in awe.  The potential number of zeros this could possibly add to his bank account combined with the experimental mech technology leaves him bordering starstruck.

Swindle makes his way casually down the bar – not too fast, not too slow.  This needs to look natural, genuine.  And it surprises Swindle to realize that what he's planning to offer Blurr is more genuine than it is fake – a deal they both might benefit from.

Blurr looks up at Swindle with a smile that nearly causes the words to stick in Swindle's throat before he can speak.  But Swindle is a professional.

"Blurr?" he asks.  "I'm Swindle."

"Yes," Blurr replies.  "And do you want an autograph or a photo or a handshake?"  From anyone else, Swindle thinks the question would come across with undercurrents of barely concealed irritation.  But Blurr somehow makes it sound like an exchange with an old friend.

"None of the above.  I want to offer you a job," Swindle says.  "May I sit?"

Blurr nods, still smiling, though his gaze drifts across the bar as Swindle takes a seat next to him.  That won't do, Swindle thinks.  He wants – needs -- Blurr's full attention, his interest.  He doesn't have it now.  The average individual probably wouldn't even realize.  But Swindle considers himself far from average in the art gauging people and gaining their confidence.  He can tell when someone is faking their way through, knows the signs -- because no one does it better than him.  Or so he had thought until he met Blurr.

"I run mecha," Swindle says.  His smile broadens as he watches Blurr's gaze sharpen.  Got him.

"And what would a company like mecha want to hire me for?" Blurr asks.  "I'm not an engineer.  I'm not a soldier."

"Well--" Swindle starts slowly.  Draw him in.  "I – we – have a problem.  A problem you might be able to help us with.  We've built a mech."  One of Blurr's eyebrows raises. 

No shit, Swindle thinks Blurr must be thinking.  "State-of-the-art, top-of-the line technology," Swindle adds.

"And there's a problem with that?" Blurr asks.

"Yes.  The mech is fast.  Faster than fast.  Faster than any of our pilots can handle.  And all the best technology in a mech is no good without a pilot."  Words that Swindle had thought to himself, and then had shouted at him repeatedly through the day's crisis meetings.  As though that fact hadn't already made itself glaringly obvious by the results of the mech tests.

"They're speculating at this point the mech is so fast that it's beyond the capabilities of any human to control."  He sets the bait, waits to see if Blurr takes it.  He doesn't wait long.

"You want me to pilot it."  Blurr says it as a statement, not a question.  "How much are you willing to pay?"

Swindle lights up a little inside.  Blurr is a man of like-minded priorities. 

"However much you want," he counters.  "Assuming you can actually drive the thing."  Swindle is confident that whatever Blurr asks for will be an inconsequential fraction of the profits mecha is about to rake in from this deal.

Blurr nods, seemingly satisfied.  "We'll work out the details at your offices, after I get a look at this supposedly undrivable mech.  If it's as fast as you say…."

There's something like longing in Blurr's gaze, Swindle thinks.

"If it's as fast as you say, you've got a deal.  Let me get my hands on that mech, give me what I ask for, and I won't just show you speed – I'll show you how to make it fly."  Blurr holds out his hand to Swindle, and Swindle shakes it.  It would be a tough contest in that moment to tell whose smile is brightest.

Cancelled Missions: Apollo-Soyuz Test Program II, with a Salyut Space Station

"The Apollo-Soyuz Test Project (ASTP) had its origins in talks aimed at developing a common U.S./Soviet docking system for space rescue. The concept of a common docking system was first put forward in 1970; it was assumed at that time, however, that the docking system would be developed for future spacecraft, such as the U.S. Space Station/Space Shuttle, not the U.S. Apollo Command and Service Module (CSM) and Soviet Soyuz spacecraft in operation at the time.

A joint U.S./Soviet space mission served the political aims of both countries, however, so the concept of a near-term docking mission rapidly gained momentum. In May 1972, at the superpower summit meeting held in Moscow, President Richard Nixon and Premier Alexei Kosygin signed an agreement calling for an Apollo-Soyuz docking in July 1975.

NASA and its contractors studied ways of expanding upon ASTP even before it was formally approved; in April 1972, for example, McDonnell Douglas proposed a Skylab-Salyut international space laboratory . A year and a half later (September 1973), however, the aerospace trade magazine Aviation Week & Space Technology cited unnamed NASA officials when it reported that, while the Soviets had indicated interest in a 1977 second ASTP flight, the U.S. space agency was 'currently unwilling' to divert funds from Space Shuttle development.

Nevertheless, early in 1974 the Flight Operations Directorate (FOD) at NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC) in Houston, Texas, examined whether a second ASTP mission might be feasible in 1977. The 1977 ASTP proposal aimed to fill the expected gap in U.S. piloted space missions between the 1975 ASTP mission and the first Space Shuttle flight.

The brief in-house study focused on mission requirements for which NASA JSC had direct responsibility. FOD assumed that Apollo CSM-119 would serve as the prime 1977 ASTP spacecraft and that the U.S. would again provide the Docking Module (DM) for linking the Apollo CSM with the Soyuz spacecraft. CSM-119 had been configured as the five-seat Skylab rescue CSM; work to modify it to serve as the 1975 ASTP backup spacecraft began as FOD conducted its study, soon after the third and final Skylab crew returned to Earth in February 1974. FOD suggested that, if a backup CSM were deemed necessary for the 1977 ASTP mission, then the incomplete CSM-115 spacecraft should get the job. CSM-115, which resided in storage in California, had been tapped originally for the cancelled Apollo 19 moon landing mission.

FOD also assumed that the ASTP prime crew of Thomas Stafford, Vance Brand, and Deke Slayton would serve as the backup crew for the 1977 ASTP mission, while the 1975 ASTP backup crew of Alan Bean, Ronald Evans, and Jack Lousma would become the 1977 ASTP prime crew. FOD conceded, however, that this assumption was probably not realistic. If new crewmembers were needed, FOD noted, then training them would require 20 months. They would undergo 500 hours of intensive language instruction during their training.

FOD estimated that Rockwell International support for the 1977 ASTP flight would cost $49.6 million, while new experiments, nine new space suits, and 'government-furnished equipment' would total $40 million. Completing and modifying CSM-115 for its backup role would cost $25 million. Institutional costs — for example, operating Mission Control and the Command Module Simulator (CMS), printing training manuals and flight documentation, and keeping the cafeteria open after hours — would add up to about $15 million. This would bring the total cost to $104.7 million without the backup CSM and $129.7 million with the backup CSM.

The FOD study identified 'two additional major problems' facing the 1977 ASTP mission, both of which involved NASA JSC's Space Shuttle plans. The first was that the CMS had to be removed to make room for planned Space Shuttle simulators. Leaving it in place to support the 1977 ASTP mission would postpone Shuttle simulator availability.

A thornier problem was that 75% of NASA JSC's existing flight controllers (about 100 people) would be required for the 1977 ASTP in the six months leading up to and during the mission. In the same period, NASA planned to conduct "horizontal" Space Shuttle flight tests. These would see a Shuttle Orbiter flown atop a modified 747; later, the aircraft would release the Orbiter for an unpowered glide back to Earth. FOD estimated that NASA JSC would need to hire new flight controllers if it had to support both the 1977 ASTP and the horizontal flight tests. The new controllers would receive training to support Space Shuttle testing while veteran controllers supported the 1977 ASTP.

The ASTP Apollo CSM (CSM-111) lifted off on a Saturn IB rocket on 15 July 1975 with astronauts Thomas Stafford, Vance Brand, and Donald Slayton on board. The ASTP Saturn IB, the last rocket of the Saturn family to fly, lifted off from Launch Complex (LC) 39 Pad B, one of two Saturn V pads at Kennedy Space Center, not the LC 34 and LC 37 pads used for Saturn IB launches in the Apollo lunar program. This was because NASA had judged that maintaining the Saturn IB pads for Skylab and ASTP would be too costly. A 'pedestal' (nicknamed the 'milkstool') raised the Skylab 2, 3, and 4 and ASTP Saturn IB rockets so that they could use the Pad 39B Saturn V umbilicals and crew access arm.

Once in orbit, the ASTP CSM turned and docked with the DM mounted on top of the Saturn IB's second stage. It then withdrew the DM from the stage and set out in pursuit of the Soyuz 19 spacecraft, which had launched about eight hours before the Apollo CSM with cosmonauts Alexei Leonov and Valeri Kubasov on board. The two craft docked on 17 July and undocked for the final time on July 19. Soyuz 19 landed on 21 July. The ASTP Apollo CSM, the last Apollo spacecraft to fly, splashed down near Hawaii on 24 July 1975 — six years to the day after Apollo 11, the first piloted Moon landing mission, returned to Earth.

The proposal for a 1977 ASTP repeat gained little traction. Though talks aimed at a U.S. Space Shuttle docking with a Soviet Salyut space station had resumed in May 1975, no plans for new U.S.-Soviet manned missions existed when the ASTP Apollo splashed down. Shuttle-Salyut negotiators made progress in 1975-1976, but the U.S. deferred signing an agreement until after the results of the November 1976 election were known.

In May 1977, the sides formally agreed that a Shuttle-Salyut mission should occur. In September 1978, however, NASA announced that talks had ended pending results of a comprehensive U.S. government review. Following the December 1979 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, work toward joint U.S.-Soviet piloted space missions was abandoned on advice from the U.S. Department of State. It would resume a decade later as the Soviet Union underwent radical internal changes that led to its collapse in 1991 and the rebirth of the Soviet space program as the Russian space program."

It was more than a little surprising when Sir Crocodile had reached out to your family wanting to do business together. All of you had been extremely skeptical to agree to even meet up to discuss the matter. Your parents never bought into the idea that a pirate turned warlord could ditch his life of crime to peacefully open and run a casino, and you didn’t either.

Everything about him felt shady to you, but not unfamiliar. You’re a businessman, you’ve met some slimy motherfuckers in your day. Sir Crocodile gave the impression of someone who liked to have a hand in every pot, as well as someone who wouldn’t hesitate to backstab anyone if he thought it would benefit himself.

In short, you had his number.

If you had it your way, the offer would have been shot down and never entertained. Unfortunately, you're not the one calling the shots in the family business. Your parents may be starting to step back and let you control more, but they were still extremely present and were the ones to make the final decisions. 

And for whatever reason, they bit. As much as you hated it, you would be moving forward with the new location. Loathed as you were to admit it, you could see their reasoning. With how successful and popular his casino Rain Dinners had gotten, more and more people were coming to Rainbase just to go there. Having an additional store inside the casino’s latest expansion would certainly help to get the business of the people who may have otherwise missed it.

Given that casinos were an environment that encouraged impulsivity, it was to be expected that the fine jewelry your family was known for would catch people’s eyes and entice more purchases. Someone who wins big will feel inclined to get themselves something(s) nice, thus sending the money right back into Crocodile’s hand.

The reasoning for accepting the offer made sense, though you couldn’t help but fear what would come with it. Blackmail and extortion seemed like the most likely possibilities, all of you would have to be on perpetual high alert to prevent any scandals or worse. This partnership will be a tedious one to say the least.

Seeing as that you would one day be in charge of your family’s businesses, it was decided that you would be the one meeting with Crocodile to discuss any questions and important details connected to the new location. You may not like him, but you would prefer to interact with him over your aging parents do so.

At first, everything seemed normal. Discussing things like rent and utility costs, or what his cut of the store’s sales would be was something you expected and came prepared for. The debate on his percentage was a long one, but you walked away from it mostly content with the result. It was slightly higher than you would have preferred, but he did throw in some stocks, so it will likely balance out so long as the casino doesn’t crash and burn.

As time went on, the meetings progressively made less and less sense. For whatever reason, Crocodile felt the need to have you come to the casino to approve of the store’s layout. The contractors your family employed have been working for them since they opened the first store, you had full faith in their ability to make it to your family’s liking. Having you come in just to agree that you approved of the blueprints seemed pointless, but whatever. There are worse things he could do.

Then he wanted to see a catalog of what you planned to have on display. It was beyond you why he needed this information. Jewelry and the sales of it were your forte, not his. Honestly you felt a bit insulted that he thought you needed his input, but you bit your tongue and showed him the created selection.

Right now, though? The current meeting was nothing short of ridiculous. He had requested your presence at Rain Dinners yet again. You were sitting across from him in a private booth in the casino, nursing a glass of bourbon.

It’s been almost an hour already and he hasn’t brought up your store once. At first you thought that maybe he was waiting on his assistant to bring some documents, but you doubted that more the longer this went on for. He should have gotten irritable by now, but instead he appeared to be shockingly content.

Perhaps he was just enjoying your company? You had to resist the urge to snort at the absurdity of that idea. Of course that wasn’t the case. He wanted something, you just had no idea what.

The ice in your drink clinked against the glass as you swirled it around absentmindedly. Clearing your throat, you cut to the chase, “Why am I here?”

Crocodile grinned, “I’m surprised it took you this long to ask.” He shot back the rest of his own drink before reaching into his coat pocket for a cigar. There was no sense of urgency in the action, he was confident you would patiently wait. The cigar was held between his teeth, and he made a show of checking for his lighter. “It would seem I forgot my lighter. Be nice and light this for me.”

The fact that he was taking his sweet time answering your question was annoying the hell out of you, but if it meant getting him to talk, then fine. You pulled out your own lighter and reached forward and up to light his cigar. His excessive height made it more than a little awkward to do this, but you were successful.

Your fingers drummed impatiently on the table as he took a drag from it. He chuckled at the display, then stood up from the table, “I’ll be right back, I have to go take care of something.”

With that, he walked away. Your jaw dropped at the audacity. Was this some kind of game to him? Forget this, you weren’t going to sit here all day while he messed with you. Downing the rest of your drink, you grab your jacket and make a move to get out of the booth.

Suddenly, several guards block you in. Your pulse begins to quicken. You tried to keep your voice even, “Move. I’m leaving.”

“No you’re not.” The statement was spoken so matter-of-factly that it honestly gave you pause. You shook your head. They had no authority over you, why should you listen to these goons? You try to push past them only to get violently shoved back into the booth.

Oh. This was bad. Did Crocodile already manage to get some dirt on your family? Not seeing any other option, you sit up and elect to stay put. You pull out your pack of cigarettes and light one up. You’re definitely going to need it with the way things are going.

It wasn’t long before the warlord returned. The guards dispersed immediately, you suppose it makes sense that they would no longer be needed with someone as powerful as him here. He was carrying a transponder snail that was set on the table ominously. Just what the hell did he need that for? Who else was getting involved in this damned meeting?

All you do is glare at Crocodile while you wait for him to drop whatever bombshell he had up his sleeve. Fortunately, it seemed he was done making you wait. “I think we would make a great team.”

A team? You weren’t completely sure what he was getting at. “We’re already business partners in a sense, what more do you want?”

“I didn’t mean it that way. I’m interested in you. Romantically.”

The abruptness of the confession knocks the wind out of you, and against your better judgment, you start laughing. This whole situation felt fake, like you were going to wake up in bed any minute. 

So that’s what this all was about. He was looking to get more money and power from your family, and he was going to do so by either a marriage or by getting blackmail on you. He was far from the first person to try and do this to you, and you were far too experienced to fall for it.

A click followed by the ringing of the transponder snail snapped you out of it. Crocodile’s expression was extremely unamused, unlike yours. He forces the receiver into your hands and you’re left confused. The call goes through, and you hesitantly bring the receiver to your mouth, “Hello? Who am I speaking with?”

Everything was silent for a moment, then a familiar voice came through. “(Y/N)? Oh god they have you, too,” your mother’s voice wavered and it sounded like she was struggling not to have a breakdown. 

Your heart drops into your stomach. “This is sick! Where is she?! What did you do to her?!” It’s taking everything you have not to launch yourself over the table at Crocodile and try to strangle him with the cord.

“Calm down! M-Maybe it would be best if you… if you just agree to whatever he’s asking you. Please.” Your mother was frantic, worried for not only her own well being but yours too.

You wanted to refuse and hold strong, but your brain caught up to the problem at hand and recognized how bad of an idea that would be. He had at least one of your parents at an undisclosed location with who knows how many of his henchmen. If you piss him off your mother is as good as dead.

That bastard had you exactly where he wanted you and he knew it. He planned it out perfectly. There was no way out of this situation that didn’t work in his favor. Through gritted teeth, you looked Crocodile in the eyes and spat out, “Fine.”

He chuckled, then plucked the receiver out of your hands to hang it up. Before you could reach for it to call back and ensure that your parents were going to be safe now, you were dragged out of the booth by the warlord himself. 

“You’re a smart man, I knew you would come around. Let’s have dinner together and we can discuss how things are going to be from now on.”

The Federation:

The federation is an organization whose mission is to contain and research a select group of individuals. These individuals all were kidnapped from other worlds using their portal technology. The federation has many different sectors working on different experiments. Some sectors specialize in emotional control while others are more dubious such as cloning. They want to make the world perfect no matter the moral cost to achieve that. They care for the islanders the way a scientist cares for their lab rats.

Notable Federation Individuals

Fred: A federation worker that used to be a normal player that specializes in reconnaissance and information gathering. He joined the Federation willingly when the Federation Intentions were still pure and good. But underwent a lot of conditioning and mind breaking to achieve the most perfect worker. Until he met Tubbo. That's when his human emotions start to break through the control. Making him question his loyalty to the organization.

Elena: The lead researcher for the hybrid cloning experiment and the Happy pills. She knowingly knows of the Federation evils even more so than the likes of Walter Bob and Fred. And drugs herself with diluted happy pills to cope. She will be much more important in this rewrite as she later on becomes the main one that deals with the islanders. She thinks her husband is dead but Walter Bob is actually her husband.

The Directors: A board of directors that fund the federation. Not much is known about them but they have the tradition of using animal code names with masks that match. Each has their own way of running things.

Cucurucho: The Federation Boss that only answers to the directors. He is the result of an old federation experiment that was trying to make something similar to a god. He has a brother that is very dangerous. He can be kind in his own way. He just isn’t used to human emotions. Only strive for perfection. He does love his brother though.

Walter Bob: A worker that was forced to become part of the federation and undergo massive brain control. He eventually breaks free and becomes a general of the rebels. Actually the husband of Elena.

Ron: a worker that was kidnapped by Bad but eventually manages to leave after befriending Bad. He was also like Walter Bob and taken away from his family.

The Resistance:

A group of ex federation workers and ex islanders. They are a militaristic and fanatic faction and want to see the Federation taken down at any cost. And will use the islanders for this.

The Codes:

Originally a discarded Federation project that was taken by the Rebels to use as a weapon against the islanders and the Federation. The creatures are a virus so they can also infect and mimic other creatures. The virus is called Binary Sickness.

The Watcher:

An actual god that the Federation experimented on and took the DNA of (which created Cucurocho and his brother). He is currently trapped on another island by the Federation and extremely pissed about it.

Oscurocho:

Cucurocho twin brother that instead of joining the Federation joined their father in his mission to take down the Federation. He can freely move and sorta acts like The Watcher main eyes and ears on Quesadilla. His relationship with his brother is complicated.

Islander Notes:

Fit: A merc for hire that hails from 2B2T, a land ravaged by chaos and destruction. A total wasteland. Wasn’t picked by the Federation higher ups but a welcome edition. His contractor is Madagio. He is human but he had to fix his body with cybernetics. He and Phil had a thing back in the day. Dated Spreen for a short while before Spreen “Died”. Very quickly falls in love with Pac soon afterwards.

Philza: An immortal crow avian that hails from a dimension that is filled with deities. He has tons of bird instincts. He used to be mortal before he died and came in front of Lady Death herself. And Death fell in love with him and gave him another chance at life. He would be immortal unless he loses his only life. Because of his long life he has many stories to tell. He burned kingdoms. He even led some. He just now wants peace and someone to be there for him (Him and his wife discussed in length that it’s fine for him to find other lovers as only when he dies will he be able to see her again). War tires those that live through countless wars. And that’s when he received a ticket. He always wanted a vacation. The Federation is very interested in his immortality.

Slime: A slime hybrid the Federation is interested in for their hybrid testing. He can die but he will create a new him, losing his memories. He eventually gets Binary Sickness and eventually corrupts into a one of the two Code Giants. He is later saved by Mariana.

Maximus: A normal human that was a conspiracy theorist that got too close to unwrapping The Federation dark secrets. So he was tricked thinking he won an all paid trip in a raffle. It was a very long trip. Maximus later joins The Resistance for a short period.

Roier: A spider hybrid that used to be human until a rogue Federation scientist experimented on him. Said scientist is Abueloier. The Federation is interested in taking back their old experiments. It’s why Roier had better treatment from The Federation in the early days.

Spreen: A Merc that travels dimensions and fights battles for whoever pays the most. Morals be damned. He had one priority and that is himself And he would have stayed that way if not for one of the wars he was fighting in. A clumsy newly born reaper would fall out of the sky. And now he has two priorities. Himself and his baby brother. He will do anything to get his family free from The Federation control, even dirty his hands for The Resistance. The Federation picked him because they heard how cold and bloodthirsty he is. They hoped he would cause conflict for the Islanders But The Federation didn’t realize that Spreen is also now a big brother. A very very protective big brother.

Vegetta: A long living elf that is a very powerful wizard. The Federation invited him to research more about such powers. This is also why The Federation gives him better treatment.

BadBoyHalo: A demon that has a job as a Reaper. He is literally one of the oldest on the island, only probably The Watcher is older. He is the cause of numerous disasters in human history. He was brought over by the Federation in order to study demons. He is also treated better by The Federation than other islanders. It may be because Cucurocho has a crush on him.

Mariana: A demigod that the federation is interested in for similar reasons they are interested in the other supernatural leaning Islanders. Unlike the other supernatural islanders Mariana doesn’t know about him being a demi god nor that he has powers. Until much much later.

Jaiden: One of the two remaining bird hybrids that come from the Hybrid experiments that the Federation did. She never lost her memories and always was on the Federation side. She was allowed to leave because Elena pulled enough strings to make it happen. She knows Baghera is pretty much her sister. Jaiden though having her belief in The Federation broken and losing her son Bobby. She accepts her death in the nuclear blast. She never got the chance to tell Baghera they are sisters. That was her only regret before she passed.

Missa: One of the youngest Immortals on the Island. He used to be human until he died to a skeleton. He was then brought to Lady Death to be shown the door to his afterlife of choice. Kristin aka the Goddess of Death saw his kind soul and decided to give him another choice. Said choice was becoming one of her reapers. Missa asked if that would help others and she said yes. So Missa was remade by her using Void. He became a reaper that specialized in Gentle Death and gently guiding children to the other side. Death never stops so he also sometimes works overtime in war zones. He is actually very powerful but is still a novice to the whole immortality business. Also doesn’t help that he is more on the pacifistic side. He doesn’t actually want to hurt others even if he can easily do so. He is a romantic so he falls easily. The type of immortal that hasn’t closed his heart yet having feelings for both immortals and mortals alike. He is actually one of Lady Death's favorite reapers so he can have an audience with her whenever he likes.

Dan: He is a Federation scientist that was mind wiped and allowed to escape. He is behind the creation of The Federation Communications and the Beta version of the Binary Entities. Soon, the mind wiping was starting to wear off so he was fully kidnapped and put on the trains just with the other islanders. It isn’t long until he fully remembers his past and tries to tell Max about everything. Before he could do so he was assassinated by The Federation in order for the information he knew to stay secret. Otherwise the experiments on the Islanders would be compromised.

Foolish: He is the second youngest Immortal. He hasn’t reached the state of closing his heart off towards mortals but definitely has reached the immortal stage of fucking around. He spawned numerous cults and religions out of boredom. He is a minor trickster god that is connected to the sea and rebirth. He can’t die as he will always come back. He created the Totems based on himself when he was bored. Him and Bad always meet each other through the centuries much to his annoyance (He will never admit that Bad is his best friend).

Luzu: He was a Federation intern that worked for Dan during the Codes experiments. He had empathy for the beta binary creatures so willingly let one into his head when he made his escape from the Federation. This beta code would later name themselves Arin. He eventually got into a world where he met Quackity and they almost got married before breaking it off. He is still pining for him even if won’t admit that to himself. Luzu was almost free from The Federation. He remembers his life back as part of the Federation. But he was only an intern so he has no memories of information that The Federation isn’t okay with spreading. It’s when he was packing his stuff from Quackity apartment that is when he saw that Quackity received a ticket. He then met up with someone through his old contacts to forge his own ticket.

Quackity: He is a duck avian that likes to travel dimensions. Federation had no reason to want him as part of their experiment excerpt that he is connected to everyone they personally wanted to come to the island. He has connections to immortals, to demigods, to the people they really were interested in. That's the reason Quackity originally got the ticket.

Rubius: He is fully human and was only invited so the vacation looked legitimate. Imagine the main character of a horror movie. He fully wanted to leave. He never got to see freedom though as he died so early on.

Carre: A human merc that was paid for by The Resistance to find his way into Isla Quesadilla. He would work for them until he eventually died to Eye Workers.

Bagi: A detective that recently found information of a string of missing people connected to something called The Federation. Before she could learn anything more about this case she was notified of a group of criminals that escaped prison and are on the run. She snuck onto the cargo ship as she was given a lead that Felps struck a deal with said criminals to drive them to another location in said boat. Pac,Mike,and Cellbit didn’t realize he didn’t actually know how to drive the boat, which is how all of them crashed onto Isla Quesadilla. The Resistance then forced Cellbit and Bagi to Remember they were twins raised at one of the Federation Child Care Centers. Obviously it was under another name to throw off suspicion. It was called the White Perfection home for Youths. (A orphanage aimed to train children into becoming new Federation Workers). She and Cellbit figured this out and escaped. But in the middle of said escape they lost contact and she eventually forgot how her brother looked. It’s why she became a police officer in the first place to eventually find her brother again.

Cellbit: A convict that escaped with Pac and Mike onto a cargo ship to try and run from the cops. Bagi is his twin sister and both were raised in the White Perfection Home for Youths. Instead of hopping around homeless shelters and adoption centers until finding a family like Bagi did. Cellbit had a much harder life. He became a child soldier during a bloody civil war and was sorta adopted by Bad (who was there busy reaping souls). This is also when he first in desperation ate other humans. Once the war ended he returned to Brazil and became one of the bloodiest serial killers to date before turning himself in. He then was put in prison and later escaped with Pac and Mike. (Despite him eating one of Pac legs).

Pac: A human ex master thief that was imprisoned before escaping with Mike and Cellbit. His leg was eaten by Cellbit so Mike made him a robotic replacement. He eventually falls for Fit when they get to the island and is actually pretty much a genius in chemistry despite not thinking so.

Mike: A human ex master thief and on the side weapons dealer. He was imprisoned with his partner in crime Pac and Cellbit before they all escaped. He obviously doesn’t trust for good reason as Cellbit literally ate Pac leg. His creativity is what made Mine the goddess of creation court him and eventually Marry him. He sometimes get possessed by her.

Felps: A human that tried to get rich as quick as he could by pretending he could drive a boat. He is the reason they crashed on Isla Quesadilla. He actually befriended Cellbit before he was imprisoned. And became a guard in hope of eventually getting him out. He eventually managed to get Cellbit into therapy post jail break and Cellbit got better. He died in Purgatory by debris hitting his head.

Antoine: A very old god disguising himself as a human. The Federation managed to trap him just how they trapped The Watcher on his own island. Despite his powers he can’t leave nor use the full extent of his powers. Eventually he gets his powers back. The plane crashed on purpose because of Kameto (Kameto was ordered to befriend certain individuals and bring them in any way to Isla Quesadilla.)

Pierre: A normal human The Federation is primarily interested because his vast intelligence and open anti-federation sentiments that was harming their good reputation they strove years to perfect. He later on would be killed by the Federation but replaced with an android that shares emotions and memories from the original Pierre.

Baghera: One of two living subjects from the avian experiments. She was considered disobedient and disloyal to the federation so her sister was much more favored. Her only good memories were her “mother” (Elena) and her “sister” (Jaiden). She went through much more trauma inducing experimentations which made her block out her whole childhood once she was out and free. It’s just The Federation wanted her back so much despite Elena's refusal. So they put Kameto a federation operative to get her back along with other persons of interest. She really thought Kameto was her friend. He was there standing with her for her therapy sessions. Once Jaiden dies, she returns from purgatory herself. She finds out Jaiden was her sister and it haunts her for the rest of the rewrite of what they could have been if only Jaiden lived.

Etoiles: He is actually a biological binary entity experiment. All other subjects either mutated, went mad, or deformed. He was the only one that lived. He was actually stolen by one of the kinder scientists to be raised out of The Federation control. Because the Federation wanted to make him a weapon. He can’t really age so he watched said “father” wither and eventually die. He joined many fight clubs and even participated in some wars. He was then “befriended” by Kameto.

Kameto: He is actually a Federation operative. He is the reason why The Federation has its fingers in most world governments. He is as cruel as the organization he works for. He was ordered to bring back a list of people of interest. He acted like he was their friend and managed to convince all to board a plane. He then crashed it on purpose by blowing up the engine with a bomb he planted previously. He killed innocents in the process but did manage to get everyone the Federation wanted on the island. He would then be ordered to spy for the federation. In purgatory Antoine would learn about all of this and leave him to die.

Niki: A cat hybrid that was well known to be very against corrupt government and corrupt companies. She quickly realized something wasn’t right with the “benevolent” charity organization The Happiness Federation. And started vandalizing and even burning Federation Facilities. She was eventually caught and frozen. All the ice prison people were enemies of the Federation. She eventually makes The Island Syndicate.

Tubbo: He used to work as a scientist and engineer for The Federation before he tried to leave. He was one of the people that was raised in one of the federation controlled orphanages. And once The Federation realized he was a genius immediately made him work for them. He is the brain behind the technology that trapped The Watcher (and similarly Antoine) on his island. This is why The Watcher especially hates him. He also was part of the research team that went into portal technology. He decided he wanted to leave seeing people get harmed for research and was frozen after three days worth of mind wiping and torture.

Mouse: One of the first beings the Federation managed to bring through their portal technology. She is the Queen of Hell so was quickly frozen until better technology is available to weaken her so she isn’t a threat.

Tina: A demon that went looking for their queen (in hope maybe she can become an angel) and was similarly frozen.

Lenay and German: A married pair of investigative journalists that was about to publish a paper about The Federation. A lot of which was information the Federation didn’t want getting out. They got kidnapped in their own home and frozen by the Federation. Their research and house was then burned and the public got fed a cover story they died in said fire.

Rivers: Ex Military Merc that was hired by the Resistance to take down the federation but failed and was frozen. When she wakes up she is convinced by Niki that both the Federation and The Resistance don’t care for them. So she immediately leaves The Resistance and creates The Island Syndicate with her.

Willy: Rivers' partner she worked with often as a merc. He was also hired by The Resistance to take down the Federation and failed. He got frozen for his troubles. Unlike Rivers he decided to stay with The Resistance. Eventually being executed by The Federation at Prison for killing Federation workers.

Pol: He was the media and propaganda manager for the Federation. He was the brains behind the Federation's public good reputation. He eventually gained a backbone and wanted to leave the company but the company refused and even started to threaten him and his family. So he fought back by talking to Lenay and German about all the corruption he partaken in or he noticed. He fully became a whistleblower. The federation soon found out and froze him.

Acau: A normal human that was invited by The Federation to the island. He actually came from a pretty wealthy family and the Federation kidnapped him in order to take millions from his family to make sure he lives well. (The Federation acts like he is in some very expensive school and they need to pay the tuition).

Jungyeok: He is actually a alien that crash landed on Isla Quesadilla. And The Federation immediately decided to make him one of the islanders so they can experiment on him easily.

Kon: A bear hybrid that came with Acau onto what they thought was a simple private school. He hates Cucurocho with a passion.

YD: A demon that went looking for three missing demons only to also get trapped on the island. YD and Bad go way back and are immortal besties.

Hugo: A man that survived a shipwreck only to wash onto Isla Quesadilla shore which he suffers even more

How the SR 71 program died. This picture is of the retirement ceremony at March Air Force Base 1990.

You cannot see the faces of the Warriors in this photograph that are possibly holding back their tears when the SR 71 program was canceled prematurely. The men The Pilots and RSO’s (reconnaissance systems officer) that flew in an airplane without any armament at 85-90,000 feet above the Earth. Theirs was the fight for justice and freedom from 1964 to 1990 of a War that never ended. We are still fighting a Cold War against communists. They put their life on the line for the freedom of the United States. These SR-71 Warriors were going to battle as they dressed slowly and precisely in their pressure suits. These brave men preparing for battle they knew they may never come home again to their family. Their families shared in the glory, and in the tension that surrounded them, I noticed that some of my fellow Habubrats have anxiety disorders. That is understandable.

SR-71 was not designed for airshows or any glory it was designed by the Skunk Works to stealthily find out what our enemies were planning.

THE SR-71 PREVENTED WAR.

Satellites could never replace the SR-71. Satellites don’t orbit east to west. Satellites can’t collect 100,000 miles of data per hour and it is easy to predict the path of a satellite. There was new money for projects in the Air Force if they went with satellites so they did. The Air Force Chief put Lockheed out of the SR 71 business. The Chief said that Lockheed trying to keep the SR 71 alive was going to hurt their chances of winning the F-22 contract! Contractors like Lockheed only have one customer the Department of Defense.

Open POM in 1985 Generals found out the cost for the first time of the SR 71. Open POM was to take classified programs such as the B2, the F1 17, and the SR 71 and reveal their cost to the air staff board so they could see what the Air Force was funding. It sounded like a good idea and probably was. The Air Force at that time had some of the new programs classified and hidden from view, but it was the kiss of death for the SR 71.

The SR 71 funding was in trouble because first off the Air Force did not use the data collected by the SR. The users were the Navy, Army, DIA, and a little bit (ELINT) for NSA.

NSA never liked the SR-71 Why? Communications intelligence SR went too fast for COMINT they thought communications intelligence was the only kind of intelligence that was useful. When the Air Force Generals saw how much the SR was costing them they revolted they said more than $200 million for operating only 10 airplanes which is ridiculous.

U-2 funding was in the General Defense Intelligence Program DIP controlled by the DIA. The Air Staff could not get at that money or they would have.

The SR money was in Program One called Strategic Forces. The reason it was in that budget was that when it came over to the Air Force from the NRO and the SRG the budget for the SR was too big for the GPIP and would have revealed how much was being spent. To cover up the cost they put it in with Strategic Bombers and Missiles, which had a very big budget

About the time of open POM in 1984. The Air Force became a Haven for fighter pilots with the death of General O’Malley the four stars were all from Tactical Air Command (TAC) they even put a TAC General in charge of SAC! SAC got the highest fastest flying aircraft and the TAC was always trying to catch up. One might ask how did this affect the SR -71? The reason once this very large amount of money was being spent on satellites they no longer wanted to fund the SR-71 The SR went from a national collection platform to Tactical intelligence asset.

The SR 71 would be flying today like the U-2 if the Air Force had not received the funding data. ( The U2 is supposed to be retiring again. I’ll believe it when I never see a U2 in the air again.)

Since I offered you 10 reasons for modest optimism last week, discontent with the Trump-Musk regime has surged even further. America appears to be waking up. Here’s the latest evidence — 10 more reasons for modest optimism. 

1. Trump’s approval ratings continue to plummet. 

The chief reason Trump was elected was to reduce the high costs of living — especially food, housing, health care, and gas.

A new Pew poll shows these costs remain uppermost in Americans’ minds. Sixty-three percent identify inflation as an overriding problem, and 67 percent say the same about the affordability of health care.

That same poll shows the public turning on Trump. The percent of those disapproving of Trump’s handling of the economy has risen to 53 percent (versus 45 percent who approve). Disapproval of his actions as president has risen to the same 53 percent versus 45 percent approval, which shows how essential economic performance is to the public’s assessment of presidents these days.

The Pew poll also shows 57 percent of the public believes that Trump “has exceeded his presidential authority.” By making the world’s richest person his hatchet man, Trump has made more vivid the role of money in politics. Hence, a record-high 72 percent now say a major problem is “the role of money in politics.” 

Other polls show similar results. In the Post-Ipsos poll, significantly more Americans strongly disapprove of Trump (39 percent) than strongly approve of him (27 percent). Reuters, Quinnipiac University, CNN, and Gallup polls show Trump’s approval ratings plummeting (ranging from 44 percent to 47 percent). 

In all of these polls, more Americans now disapprove of Trump than approve of him.

2. DOGE is running amusk.

DOGE looks more and more like a giant hoax. This week, reporters foundthat nearly 40 percent of the contracts DOGE claims to have canceled aren’t expected to save the government any money, according to the administration’s own data.

As a result, on Tuesday DOGE deleted all of the five biggest “savings” on its so-called “wall of receipts.” The scale of its errors — and the misunderstandings and poor quality control that appear to underlie them — has raised questions about the effort’s broader work, which has led to mass firings and cutbacks across the federal government.

DOGE has also had to reverse its firings. On Tuesday, Secretary of Veterans Affairs Douglas A. Collins celebrated cuts to 875 contracts that he claimed would save nearly $2 billion. But when veterans learned that those contracts covered medical services, recruited doctors, and funded cancer programs as well as burial services for veterans, the outcry was so loud that on Wednesday the VA rescinded the ordered cuts. 

After hundreds of nuclear weapons workers were abruptly fired, the Trump administration is scrambling to rehire them. 

After hundreds of scientists at the Food and Drug Administration were fired, they’re being asked to return. 

On Wednesday, Musk acknowledged that DOGE “accidentally canceled” efforts by the U.S. Agency for International Development to prevent the spread of Ebola. But Musk insisted the initiative was quickly restored. 

Wrong. Current and former USAID officials say Ebola prevention efforts have been largely halted since Musk and his DOGE allies moved last month to gut the global-assistance agency and freeze its outgoing payments. The teams and contractors that would be deployed to fight an Ebola outbreak have been dismantled, they added.

DOGE staff are resigning. On Tuesday, 21 federal civil service tech workers resigned from DOGE, writing in a joint resignation letter that they were quitting rather than help Musk “dismantle critical public services.”

The staffers all worked for what was known as the U.S. Digital Service before it was absorbed by DOGE. Their ranks include data scientists, product managers, and engineers. According to the Associated Press, “all previously held senior roles at such tech companies as Google and Amazon and wrote in their resignation letter that they joined the government out of a sense of duty to public service.”

Finally, Musk’s conflicts of interest are bursting into the open, and it isn’t a pretty sight. The FAA is close to canceling a $2.4 billion contract with Verizon to overhaul a communications system integral to its air traffic control system — and awarding the contract to Musk’s Starlink instead. 

Why? A team of employees from SpaceX, Starlink’s parent company, has been working inside the FAA in recent days. And Musk himself has been criticizing Verizon’s platform on his social media company, X. 

Senior FAA officials have refused to sign paperwork authorizing the switch to Starlink, so Musk’s team is now seeking help to secure the deal from Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and acting FAA Administrator Chris Rocheleau. Could Musk’s financial motive be any clearer? 

3. Tesla is in deep sh*t.

Americans outraged by Musk’s outsized role in the Trump regime are targeting Musk’s Tesla. 

Many Tesla owners are feeling buyer’s remorse — their cars are vandalizedor they become publicly shamed by strangers upset with the car company’s CEO. Others are putting anti-Musk bumper stickers on their cars.

A video from musician Sheryl Crow that received over 20 million views on Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook features the singer waving goodbye to her Tesla Model S, as Andrea Bocelli’s “Time to Say Goodbye” plays in the background. “There comes a time when you have to decide who you are willing to align with,” Crow wrote in the caption. “So long Tesla.”

Last weekend, thousands demonstrated outside of Tesla dealerships from Philadelphia to Seattle to register their outrage with Musk’s political power. 

The #TeslaTakedown campaign page on Action Network has listed 46 upcoming events at Tesla dealerships and charging stations around the country over the next week. Another organizing platform, Mobilize, includes another 32 events.

Union pension funds are getting involved. Randi Weingarten, president of the giant American Federation of Teachers, has called on the CEOs of the nation’s six largest asset management firms to review Tesla’s current valuation. “This is about safeguarding workers’ retirements,” she said in a statement. “Just this week we saw Tesla stock continue to sink faster than a Cybertruck in quicksand as European sales fell off a cliff. So, we knew we needed to act.”

4. The oligarchy has never been more exposed.

An important aspect of the era we’re in is that a record share of the nation’s wealth is in the hands of a small group of people who are now revealing themselves to be remarkably selfish, shameless, and insensitive to the needs of America. 

This is a further reason for modest optimism because as the oligarchy exposes itself for what it is, the dangers it poses to average people become more apparent — and the odds increase of a fierce public backlash to it. 

On Wednesday, at the same time Elon Musk (the world’s richest person) was lecturing Trump’s Cabinet about the importance of decimating the federal workforce, Jeff Bezos (America’s second-richest) was telling staffers at The Washington Post that henceforth the Post’s opinions would focus on defending “personal liberties and free markets” and opposing viewpoints would not be published. 

The Post’s opinion editor, David Shipley, promptly resigned, as he should.

When oligarchs talk of “personal liberties and free markets” they mean their own liberties to become even richer and more powerful, as the rest of America slides into worsening economic insecurity and fear. When the oligarchs speak of “freedom,” what they actually seek is freedom from accountability. 

All this is becoming more apparent than ever. 

5. People are rising against corporate power.

For all these reasons, a backlash is beginning. Popular rage that this country is now run by an oligarchy, a small group of billionaires and corporate elites, is surging. 

Today’s “economic blackout” has enlisted millions of Americans who have stopped buying and thereby demonstrated our power. 

Meanwhile, protests are breaking out against big predatory corporations. On the eastern shore of Maryland, a bright red Republican area, 20,000 have signed a petition demanding an investigation of Delmarva Power, a subsidiary of utility giant Exelon, for overcharging them. That’s almost 5 percent of Delmarva’s entire customer base. 

The same anger is mounting in New York City at Con Edison. And in St. Joseph, Missouri, at Evergy. 

When House Republicans were in their home districts last week, they were deluged with angry questions about corporate power, Elon Musk, and big money. 

A few Senate Republicans even explained to their constituents that they voted to confirm Robert Kennedy Jr. as secretary of Health and Human Services because he’s “hated” by Big Pharma. 

Meanwhile, Bernie is back. While not running for president again, 83-year-old Bernie Sanders this week launched his “National Tour to Fight Oligarchy” — to overflow crowds in deep-red Nebraska and Iowa. Bernie is showing that even in red America, opposition to oligarchy and Trump is becoming the dominant view of a large swath of the public. 

Record-breaking crowds are also appearing for other notable progressives. A record-sized group showed up to Representative Jim McGovern’s town hall. The same thing happened in Massachusetts with Senator Elizabeth Warren.

6. As Trump and Musk trade Social Security and Medicaid for big tax cuts for the rich, Americans will go ballistic. 

The budget plan passed by the House this week — at Trump’s urging — gives billionaire oligarchs and giant corporations the lion’s share of $4.5 trillion in tax cuts.

To offset the $4.5 trillion, the plan includes severe spending cuts to Medicaid, food stamps, and Social Security. 

Seventy-two million Americans rely on Medicaid, half of them children. Forty-two million Americans receive food stamps — many who aren’t paid enough to put food on the table. 

Federal workers at the Social Security Administration learned Wednesday that a plan was already underway to cut 50 percent of staff, as well as 1,200 field office locations.

The move is likely to affect tens of thousands of employees across the country and millions who rely on the agency for monthly checks that keep them afloat. Such deep cuts to SSA, already at historically low staffing, will cause significant degradation of services, very likely including checks missed and individuals dying before their claims can be processed.

Why do I include this outrage in my list of reasons for modest optimism? Because if nothing else awakens the slumbering giant of the American people, the Trump-Musk attacks on Medicaid and Social Security to pay for another giant tax cut for the rich will.

Polls show unequivocally that Americans across party lines reject tax cuts that disproportionately benefit the rich. In fact, more than two-thirds — 67 percent — of Americans support higher taxes on billionaires. 

7. Democracies are joining together, minus Trump’s America.

Since it’s become clear that America has begun allying itself with Russia, the movement of the world’s other major democracies to join forces has been gaining momentum. 

On February 17, eight European leaders and the heads of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and European Union met. On Wednesday, France’s Emmanuel Macron spoke with the leaders of 19 countries, including Canada, either in person or over videoconferencing. All of this bodes well for a united front of democracies against authoritarian dictatorships — even though, tragically, Trump’s America is on the wrong side. 

8. Negative economic consequences of the Trump-Musk blunderbuss are beginning to appear.

The economy is starting to show signs of strain as the Trump-Musk moves to shrink federal spending, lay off government workers, and impose tariffs on America’s largest trading partners shake businesses and ricochet across states and cities.

Trump’s moves to halt foreign aid and freeze some federal funding have already taken a toll on domestic farmers who export billions of dollars of products as part of American foreign aid programs. 

Billions of dollars of climate and infrastructure investments that were underway during the Biden administration are now in limbo.

Apollo Global Management, an investment firm, estimates that DOGE job cuts could rise to 300,000. When government contractors are included, total layoffs could be closer to 1 million. 

Economic indicators are showing signs of mounting stress, with much of the anxiety focused on Trump’s tariffs. On Thursday, he said tariffs on Canada and Mexico would go into effect on March 4 and he would impose an additional 10 percent tariff on China. 

A survey of consumer sentiment published by the Conference Board on Tuesday recorded its largest monthly decline in confidence since 2021 in February. The drop was attributed to growing pessimism about employment prospects and future business conditions, with concerns about trade and tariffs reaching levels last seen during the 2019 trade wars in Mr. Trump’s first term.

This week’s University of Michigan survey of American consumers shows that they expect prices will rise at a 3.5 percent yearly rate over the next decade — the highest rate of consumers’ inflation fears since 1995.

A measure of corporate activity from S&P Global published last week showed business expansion slowing in the United States in February as a result of “uncertainty and instability surrounding new government policies” such as federal spending cuts and tariff-related developments.

The National Association of Homebuilders said in its latest report that builder confidence had fallen to a five-month low because of concerns about tariffs, elevated mortgage rates, and high housing costs.

Morgan Stanley economists estimate that tariffs will raise inflation, as measured by the Personal Consumption Expenditures index, by as much as 0.6 percentage points and depress real consumer spending by as much as 2 percentage points. The overall hit to inflation-adjusted economic growth could be as high as 1.1 percentage points.

I include these gloomy economic statistics as a modest reason for optimism because they, too, signal the looming end of public support for Musk and Trump. 

9. Elections are looking brighter.

Add up all of this and elections are looking brighter — and we don’t have to wait until 2026. This is a major election year. If you count all the seats up for election this year at the local, state, and federal levels, there are 100,000seats open across 45 states.

Governors, mayors, city councils, state representatives, judges, school boards — these positions up and down the entire ballot in 2025 — are a vital line of defense against the Trump-Vance-Musk regime.

Wisconsin voters will fill the deciding seat on their state’s Supreme Court. This election will have huge implications for the labor rights and voting rights of everyday Wisconsinites. Musk is filling the coffers of the Republican candidate right now, but Wisconsinites won’t let Musk’s big money determine their future. 

If you live in New York City and don’t like the Trump administration meddling in the federal corruption charges against current Mayor Eric Adams, you have the power to choose a new mayor.

The great states of New Jersey and Virginia will elect their next governors — and control of their state houses.

On the federal level, Florida will hold two special elections for the U.S. House of Representatives, and New York will hold another later this year. These could affect the balance of power in the House.

The sea change is already beginning. 

On Wednesday, Democrat Eugene Vindman won his House race against the Republican and former army Green Beret Derrick Anderson in Virginia’s 7th Congressional District — a key victory for Democrats as they seek to regain a majority in the lower chamber.

In his first term, Trump fired Vindman and his brother, Alexander, who both held senior roles on Trump’s National Security Council, after they raised concerns about Trump’s efforts to pressure Ukraine into investigating Joe Biden and his son Hunter.

As a member of Congress, Vindman will now help fellow Democratic lawmakers serve as a check on the power of Trump.

10. Adding it all up. 

Connect the dots: Trump’s ratings continue to plummet. Musk’s DOGE is off the rails and becoming a late-night joke. Consumers are taking out their anger on Tesla. America’s oligarchs are openly defiant and behaving shamelessly. Bernie and other progressive voices are attracting record-breaking crowds. Trump and Musk are attacking Medicaid and Social Security to pay for a giant tax cut for the wealthy. The world’s leading democracies are joining together against dictatorial regimes, including Trump’s America. Economic indicators are trending downward. And elections look brighter. 

What does this add up to? America is waking up, and it doesn’t like what it’s seeing in Trump and Musk. 

I don’t want to sound overly optimistic. We have a huge amount of work to do. My purpose in giving you these additional reasons for modest optimism is for you to have a sense of possibility. 

All is not lost. We are not doomed. The Trump-Vance-Musk regime is filled with incompetence and riddled with treachery. 

If all of us maintain our courage and resolve, and do what’s necessary, we will prevail.
