#JackedKirby - Collaging With The King... πŸ’₯πŸ’₯πŸ’₯ Kirby was doing some wild things in the pages of Marvel Comics during his epic creation era of 1959-72, but none were more experimental and cooler than his application of collages to the pages of his comics!!! He started the practice in the Fantastic Four, and continued to implement them into many of his works that followed. One of those issues was The Mighty Thor #Issue161 (published in February of 1969). πŸ’₯πŸ’₯πŸ’₯ In this awesome collage we see Thor and The Recorder thrust into the dark recesses of outer space after their ship is destroyed by a battle between Ego the Living Planet And Galactus!!! This portion of space is known as the β€œBlack Galaxy” and Jack utilizes some stylized black and white space scapes as the background to his traditional comic images of Thor, The Recorder And a space ship belonging to the alien Wanderers in the foregrounds (all in color!)... πŸ’₯πŸ’₯πŸ’₯ You gotta love the weightlessness that Thor displays (pic 4) with his long blond locks of hair floating aimlessly and his arms sprawled out... and I also love that the trusty Mjolinir is tucked securely into his belt loop!!! πŸ’₯πŸ’₯πŸ’₯ A beauty of a collage just tossed in by the King... it’s times like these when I feel he was showing off his skills just a bit!!! πŸ’₯πŸ’₯πŸ’₯ #JackKirby #KingKirby #Kirby #TheMightyThor #Thor #Galactus #Ego #Asgard #OuterSpace #KirbySpace #CosmicKirby #KirbyCollages #ComicBookCollages #ComicCollages #Comic #Comics #ComicBook #ComicBooks #60sComics #ComicsOfThe60s #IGcomics #ComicsOfIG https://www.instagram.com/p/BximEz5B0pn/?igshid=162j18211pm65

#JackedKirby - Thor and Surfer... Jack and Walt... πŸ’₯πŸ’₯πŸ’₯ Jack Kirby is widely hailed as being one of the greatest comic book CREATORS in the universe, but most people don’t realize how much of an influence his work has on the next couple of generations of comic artists & writers that followed him... and this piece in particular has not one but TWO of those stories! πŸ’₯πŸ’₯πŸ’₯ In The Jack Kirby Collector #Issue14 (published in February of 1997) there is an interview with the great Walt Simonson. Walt is a titan in the comic book field in his own right, but has widely acknowledged Kirby’s influence over his artistic stylings. The issue features a great article and interview that focuses on Simonson’s love of Kirby’s works, his own runs on Kirby characters Thor, Manhunter and the New Gods... it’s just an awesome read. But the real gem is the pics that are included! πŸ’₯πŸ’₯πŸ’₯ Inside #Issue14 we see this awesome Thor & Silver Surfer cosmic pin-up that was created by Jack for fellow artist Carl Taylor. Kirby traded this pinup for a piece of Taylor’s art, which he happened to be fond of. It is a breathtaking space-scape, with both Thor and Surfer conveying might and power galore! It was created and traded in 1977... πŸ’₯πŸ’₯πŸ’₯ Pic 1 of this post is Jack’s original pencils of the pin up. (pic 1) As was normal in issues of the Kirby Collector, a current artist was asked to ink/color Jack’s original pencil design. This task was completed by Walt Simonson himself, and we can see the black and white inks (Pic 2, appeared in the Collected Omnibus edition) and the full colored finished piece that adorned the back cover of #Issue14 of The Jack Kirby Collector (Pic 3). An awesome original piece from The King and an awesome job finishing it up by Walt!!! Well done by @twomorrowspubs for documenting and sharing the whole process!!! πŸ’₯πŸ’₯πŸ’₯ #JackKirby #KingKirby #Kirby #PinUp #Thor #SilverSurfer #CosmicKirby #CarlTaylor #WaltSimonson #TJKC #TheJackKirbyCollector #TwoMorrows #Comic #Comics #ComicBook #ComicBooks #70sComics #ComicsOfThe70s #ComicArt #IGComicArt #IGComics #ComicsOfIG #ComicBooksOfIG #Inking #Pencils #Covers https://www.instagram.com/p/BvhPul0BfXW/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=177ibn6kn67rk

#JackedKirby - Faces in The Krackle... Kirby style! πŸ‘±πŸ»β€β™‚οΈπŸ‘±πŸΌβ€β™‚οΈπŸ‘±πŸ½β€β™‚οΈπŸ‘±πŸΎβ€β™‚οΈπŸ‘±πŸΏβ€β™‚οΈ Kirby was the king of reworking layouts and design concepts, tightening things up he had done before and making them even better (in certain cases of course... sometimes the original was better too!). That’s probably because some of his design ideas and layouts are SO GREAT they deserve a second (and sometimes third) reworking... πŸ‘±πŸ»β€β™‚οΈπŸ‘±πŸΌβ€β™‚οΈπŸ‘±πŸΎβ€β™‚οΈπŸ‘±πŸΏβ€β™‚οΈπŸ‘±πŸ½β€β™‚οΈ Check out the Kirby Krackle infused heads from a cover of Thor in β€˜66 and a story interior from β€˜70... very similar!!! πŸ‘±πŸ»β€β™‚οΈπŸ‘±πŸΌβ€β™‚οΈπŸ‘±πŸ½β€β™‚οΈπŸ‘±πŸΎβ€β™‚οΈπŸ‘±πŸΏβ€β™‚οΈ The first 2 pics of this post show the cover of Thor #Issue133 from October of 1966. It is the first full issue of Ego the Living Planet (his first appearance is technically the last page of Issue 132), but the way Ego is portrayed on the cover looks much different then his interior looks.... πŸ‘±πŸ»β€β™‚οΈπŸ‘±πŸΌβ€β™‚οΈπŸ‘±πŸ½β€β™‚οΈπŸ‘±πŸΎβ€β™‚οΈπŸ‘±πŸΏβ€β™‚οΈ In pics 3/4 we have the opening splash to Chamber of Darkness #Issue4 from April of 1970. In this pic we see two witches conjuring a face out of a cauldron, and that face bears a striking resemblance to the Ego, specifically the way the face seems to emerge from the Kirby Krackle cloud! πŸ‘±πŸ»β€β™‚οΈπŸ‘±πŸΌβ€β™‚οΈπŸ‘±πŸ½β€β™‚οΈπŸ‘±πŸΎβ€β™‚οΈπŸ‘±πŸΏβ€β™‚οΈ Pic 5 is another image of the face in the Krackle cloud from another page in the issue and pic 6 is a collage of all three faces to compare them... πŸ‘±πŸ»β€β™‚οΈπŸ‘±πŸΌβ€β™‚οΈπŸ‘±πŸ½β€β™‚οΈπŸ‘±πŸΎβ€β™‚οΈπŸ‘±πŸΏβ€β™‚οΈ It’s not exactly similar (one of the faces has one eye!!! Lol..) but the layout concept of the face emerging from the clouds is eerily reminiscent.... what do you guys think? Tell us in the comment section below!!! πŸ‘±πŸ»β€β™‚οΈπŸ‘±πŸΌβ€β™‚οΈπŸ‘±πŸ½β€β™‚οΈπŸ‘±πŸΎβ€β™‚οΈπŸ‘±πŸΏβ€β™‚οΈ #Kirby #KingKirby #JackKirby #Faces #KirbyFaces #Thor #ChamberOfDarkness #60sComics #ComicsOfThe60s #70sComics #ComicsOfThe70s #Comic #ComicsComicBook #ComicBooks #Cosmic #CosmicKirby #Ego #TheMonster #AndreasFleck #IGComics #ComicsOfIG #InstaComics #ComicsOfInstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/Bv4g3UlB59G/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1he32ux8rrt8r

#JackedKirby - The Giant Galactic Eye... πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘ Check out this massive space-scape from Jack on one of his last full series, Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers! What an insanely beautiful cosmic picture from the King... hard to believe that THIS is what people criticize as β€œKirby being in decline!!!” πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘ This awesome double splash page comes from Captain Victory #Issue7 from September of 1982. We see Captain Victory and his fleet stumble upon this massive face in outer space... the Giant Galactic Eye!!! πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘ If this is how the story starts artistically, you can only imagine the insane designs that Kirby would employ when bringing the Wonder Warriors into this issue (check back in the feed, we did a whole post on those fantastically designed characters sometime ago- Mike). Kirby has his cosmic greatness hitting on all angles with this insane alien head... and the beautifully Kirby-Tech adorning the bottom two panels (from inside Cap’s ship!) are throwbacks to Kirby’s FF days!!! I don’t know why people critique Kirby’s art at this point of his career... to me, it’s SPACE-TASTIC!!! πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘ #JackKirby #KingKirby #Kirby #CaptainVictory #CaptainVictoryAndTheGalacticRangers #TheGalacticRangers #PacificComics #80sComics #ComicsOfThe80s #Comic #Comics #ComicBook #ComicBooks #CosmicKirby #KirbySplashPages #KirbySplashPage #SplashPage #DoubleSplashPage https://www.instagram.com/p/BvxSqm2AbUg/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1c6r0ljrjhc31

#JackedKirby - The Black Racer Arrives!!! ⚫️⚫️⚫️ The Black Racer is both an absurd and beautifully designed character. The Racer represents death in the world of the New Gods... ridiculous red skis and all! β›·β›·β›· This page comes from #Issue4 of the New Gods series (published in September of 1971)and illustrates the arrival of the Racer on Earth where he has arrived to claim the body of dead New God Seagrin... the explosion of fire that ushers in the Racer into the scene is incomprehensible to average humans. Jack does an awesome job of splitting this page in half with an excellent double horizontal panel across the middle highlighting the power and mystique of the Racer in all his glory!!! πŸ’₯β›·πŸ’₯ #JackKirby #KingKirby #Kirby #BlackRacer #NewGods #DeathOfTheNewGods #Apokolips #4thWorld #70sComics #ComicsofThe70s #Comic #Comics #ComicBook #ComicBooks #igcomiccommunity #igcomics #igcomicfamily #CosmicKirby

#JackedKirby - β€œWords Fail Me Princess...β€œ- 2001 Pt. 2 πŸ’₯πŸš€πŸ’₯ The 2001: A Space Odyssey series is a really trippy journey down the rabbit hole with Jack and Mike Royer. The series starts off with some ties to the original novel/movie of the same name but quickly evolves into something different... the lone tie in being the Monolith. ⚫️⚫️⚫️ #Issue6 (published in May of 1977) kicks of with Norton and his crew mates being contacted by what can only be described as an angry alien crew looking for the princess they have just discovered. Realizing they can’t beat the rival aliens, Norton and the Princess escape in a small green escape pod (pic1) and begin traveling towards her home world. πŸš€πŸš€πŸš€ Pic 2 of this set shows them mid flight, hurtling through the cosmos towards an unknown location. All of the sudden they see a wall of fire, and Norton begs the princess to stop... but she plows on, and passes through the the flame barrier with no issue! The ship hurtling through Space (the middle panel) is gorgeous! πŸš€πŸ”₯πŸš€ But the payoff off is pic 3, because when they emerge from the flame wall they have come out on the other side and are facing a beautiful space station and gorgeous surroundings, masterfully laid out by Kirby. This page is one of the most β€œCosmic” things I have ever seen from Kirby.... and I’m better because of it!!! πŸš€πŸš€πŸš€ Come see us at the @kirbymuseum pop up exhibit TODAY, Saturday May 12th at 1pm for a live taping of our podcast! #JackedKirby - Transition... One of the things that always impressed me upon Jack's return to Marvel was his unabashed desire to work. He could have came back the returning hero and just did 1-2 titles and contributed a few covers to some other books. But that wasn't his goal. When Jack left to DC in 1970 he wanted to CREATE. Both Write & Draw HIS STORIES. So when he came back to Marvel, it was going to be more of the same... Upon his return Jack pinch hit on dozens of covers and got to work on Captain America (writing and drawing) in the stretch run towards the USA Bicentennial in 1976. But the most ambitious project he took on was the adaption of Stanley Kubrick's hit film 2001: A Space Odyssey in a Treasury Edition format. That format was much larger than a normal comic, giving Kirby larger boundaries to work within. And he used every extra inch to pack in some of his most visual work in his career! He also took on the task of "writing" the story. Now before you bring up the fact that it was a BOOK AND MOVIE already, just know that Kirby used both of those sources and his own additions to convert the story to a "comic worthy" script. This is an awesome page from the end of the first section of the book. The ape chapter, pulled right from the movie, features a character named Moonwatcher (a Kirby addition). We see his story come to an end... and it transitions immediately into a panel featuring a giant space ship. Yup.. the spaceship that will set up the next chapter (and eventually the whole story) of Hal 9000 and Dave Bowman! Look how beautifully Kirby transitions from portraying the prehistoric backdrop of Moonwatcher's story to an Outer Space setting... complete with requisite Kirby Krackle! A true work of art.. and the subject of an upcoming podcast perhaps??? #JackKirby #Kirby #KingKirby #2001 #ASpaceOdyssey #TreasuryEdition #StanleyKubrick #ArthurCClarke #Adaption #KirbyTech #KirbySpace #CosmicKirby #Comic #Comics #ComicBook #ComicBooks #IGComics #ComicsOfIG #KirbyTheWriter #WriterArtist #70sComics #ComicsOfThe70s

#JackedKirby - Brother Eye & OMAC !!! After the cancellation of his 4th World titles at DC Jack still had contractual obligations. So he launched The Demon, Kamandi and then OMAC to fulfill those outstanding orders. OMAC was the last of those books, introduced in Late 74/early 1975. The story of Buddy Blanks becoming the hero OMAC through the power of super satellite Brother Eye is some of Kirby's wackiest stuff... but that it is also extremely ahead of its time. This interior splash comes from #Issue4 of the series and was published in Mar/April of 1975. It is a really cool shot of Brother Eye up in space, and a headshot of OMAC on the screen/Eye of the satellite is visible. This does a great job of showing the symbiotic relationship between Blanks and Brother Eye. Despite being separate entities, they are bonded together as one when they are operating at full strength!!! Another thing I noticed was Jack's layouts in this book. He wasn't playing around. He opens with 3 straight full page splash pages... 5 total full page splashes in the first 8 pages!!! And he wasn't done... there are 7 total Full Page splashes and at least 2/3 half page splashes throughout the book!!! Including the cover that's 8 splash pages in a SINGLE ISSUE. Come on... that is UNREAL!!! #JackKirby #Kirby #KingKirby #OMAC #OneManArmyCore #BrotherEye #DCComics #igcomics #igcomicscommunity #IGComicCommunity #Comic #comics #ComicBook #ComicBooks #SplashPages #kirbysplashpages #KirbySplash #CosmicKirby #OuterSpace #Cosmic

#JackedKirby - β€œShe’s something else...” - 2001 Pt. 1 πŸ’₯πŸš€πŸ’₯ The 2001: A Space Odyssey series is a really trippy journey down the rabbit hole with Jack and Mike Royer. The series starts off with some ties to the original novel/movie of the same name but quickly evolves into something different... the lone tie in being the Monolith. ⚫️⚫️⚫️ The series is broken into several mini arcs, with #Issue5 and #Issue6 dealing with deep space astronaut Harvey Norton. Norton is torn between staying home on Earth or venturing out on an expedition to the outer reaches of Neptune... but by the end of #Issue5 (published in April β€˜77) He is front and center on the mission in deep space, confronted by an aircraft with an alien life form aboard! πŸš€πŸ’₯πŸš€ The life form turns out to be a female alien... an awesome design from The King if I do say so myself! She has human features, but a definitively alien head that is hard to deny! The three astronauts are faced with this creature from deep space... and what will they do with her? πŸš€πŸš€πŸš€ Check back tomorrow for Part 2 of this post.... and come see us at the @kirbymuseum pop up exhibit Saturday May 12th at 1pm for a live taping of our podcast! #JackedKirby - Now that is how one does a splash page! I don't often like to do back to back posts on the same character, but I came across this beauty and couldn't sit on it one more second! This interior splash comes from Thor #Issue159 which was published in December of 1968. It takes place during this story in which Donald Blake truly finds out the origin of his existence. Thor is stuck in his human form (Donald Blake) and needs answers... answers he can only get on Asgard. Since he can't transform and travel their himself, he decides to enter a deep meditation and hopefully trigger some latent memories that will better explain his backstory. This panel is in that phase of sleep where you begin to doze off and can be mentally transported anywhere... and the Donald Blake lying in bed/spiritual Thor flying through space dichotomy is awesome! Another great full page splash from the King! #JackKirby #Kirby #KingKirby #Thor #TheMightyThor #Odin #Zeus #Asgard #Origin #StanAndJack #Comic #Comics #ComicBook #ComicBooks #ComicsOfIG #IGComics #60sComics #ComicsOfThe60s #SplashPage #KirbySplash #CosmicKirby
