#JackedKirby - The Insectons!!! 💥💥💥 I feel like Jack’s work on Captain Victory is derided for no apparent reason... because the artwork is FIRE! I don’t even understand how people could look at the splash pages located throughout these 13 issues and ever say “nah man... he lost it by then”. I just don’t get it. 💥💥💥 Take this page from #Issue5 of the Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers (July of 1982) that features some invading Insectons (the main villains of the series) as they run up Captain Victory and his crew... look at the detail and design in each of those Insect Faces!!! Especially the main character of the page, who turns out to be the new “Regent” of the hive... kinda like the head Insecton in charge! He is amazing to look at. All the appendages and detail are just amazing! 💥💥💥 What I think Kirby does really well here is blue the line between insect & robot. As much as you know these are organic insect creatures you also get a very robotic vibe about their appearances... I think it’s the gear-like shapes and angles that do it, but they look like they are insect-robots. I wonder if this is where the Transformer creators got the idea for the INSECTICON line of insect robots that first appeared in 1986. #JackedKirby - The Giant Galactic Eye... 👁👁👁 Check out this massive space-scape from Jack on one of his last full series, Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers! What an insanely beautiful cosmic picture from the King... hard to believe that THIS is what people criticize as “Kirby being in decline!!!” 👁👁👁 This awesome double splash page comes from Captain Victory #Issue7 from September of 1982. We see Captain Victory and his fleet stumble upon this massive face in outer space... the Giant Galactic Eye!!! 👁👁👁 If this is how the story starts artistically, you can only imagine the insane designs that Kirby would employ when bringing the Wonder Warriors into this issue (check back in the feed, we did a whole post on those fantastically designed characters sometime ago- Mike). Kirby has his cosmic greatness hitting on all angles with this insane alien head... and the beautifully Kirby-Tech adorning the bottom two panels (from inside Cap’s ship!) are throwbacks to Kirby’s FF days!!! #JackedKirby - Back Covers are just as important as Front Covers to Jack!!! 💥💥💥 When Jack left Marvel & DC behind to explore the worlds of animation and Indy publishing one of the things he tried to do was break conventions and restrictions that had limited him as a creative for al those years in the industry. Publisher Pacific Comics couldn’t care less how wacky Kirby wanted to be... they had The King of Comics in house, and he was accompanied by industry titans like Neal Adams, Steve Ditko and others contributing back up stories for Captain Victory... a revolution was brewing! 💥💥💥 Take the back cover for Captain Victory #Issue6 from August of 1982. The title character, Captain Victory, suffers a catastrophic injury in battle and he is moments from death. But Jack had a plan for that... the Captain can take all his memories/mind and deposit into a new fresh body!!! As long as the procedure can be completed, Captain Victory would NEVER die! 💥💥💥 The back cover of the issue is used to show the mind switch surgery process. The Captain lies there with a special helmet, awaiting for his consciousness to be deposited into his new clone body! It’s another cover/splash page... and a beautiful one at that!!! There is also an example of Jack’s signature writing. His prose is very new age and cosmos orientated at times, and that is on display with this passage here!!! To think that Jack would put this much work and effort into the BACK of a comic is beyond me. #JackedKirby - Galactic Rangers can play Dress Up Too... Jack’s work on Captain Victory for Pacific Comics was a testament to both him and the company for the quality of work that was being put out. For Jack to be so far along in his career and still to be churning out mind blowing art page after page is astonishing... and it was a hell of a big deal for an Indy company like Pacific to have a guy like Kirby on the roster. So to celebrate the 2nd year anniversary of Pacific they published a cool one shot entitled Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers #Issue1 Special Edition in October of 1983. The book opens with a RIDICULOUS double splash page that shows the Captain looking on in disbelief as his crew runs around dressed in medieval costumes due to the mischievous imp Egghead. He has transformed the crew into people from various moments in history... and eventually will cause Victory, Klavus and Tarin to be transported to medieval France for a madcap adventure. #JackedKirby - Now that's what I call a splash page!!! After Jack's second stint at Marvel he forayed a bit in a he independent realm of the comic industry while exploring options in animation. Some of his animation projects got off the ground (Thundarr the Barbarian), but his series Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers is one of the greatest accomplishments of his career (in my opinion). Many people didn't know it at the time, but Jack had some New Gods storylines he wanted to pay off. Considering he was unable to complete his story arcs for DC back in the day, he would have to make some changes to the stories to adapt them to a new series. Many of the elements of the New Gods are present in Captain Victory, including the main villainous group of aliens called the Insectons. They are very reminiscent of the "bug" soldiers commanded by Mantis for Darkseid. This double splash comes from #Issue6 back in August of 1982. The book opens with a traditional splash, there are two regular paneled pages, then this insane double splash. It's even crazier because the double splash takes up the top 3/4 of the page, and the bottom 1/4 is a conversation between Victory and his fellow soldier Orca. So innovative! The top 3/4 shows the Insectons invading a city from below... as would be there style! That main Insecton has a crazy horned mask like only Kirby could design and what looks like a teched out War staff!!! The green armor/skin the have is also very reminiscent of Mantis, henchman of Darkseid! And in the last panel of the page you even get some Kirby Krackle!!!! Yeah buddy... this series is loaded with so many splash pages. It's a worthy read for any real Kirby fans. #JackedKirby - A Splash Page From Outer Space!!! 🚀🚀🚀 By the time Kirby had left Marvel for the second time in the early 80s and went over to compose creator owned works for Pacific Comics some say his skills were dwindling. I couldn’t disagree more. Although the work he did on Silver Star and Captain Victory (and even later on the two Super Powers mini series for DC) may not be as artistically beautiful as his early work, I think a lot of that has to do with the importance and recognizability of those early Marvel & DC properties that leads to people preferring them. But one just needs to peruse those series to see some of the epic work Jack was still throwing down... 🚀🚀🚀 Take a look at this double page splash from #Issue10 of Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers (published in April of 1983). The Captain and his crew are traveling through space when they are accosted by a giant... well for lack of better terms a Giant “Space baby”. Yup, this alien “space baby” entity is threatening their ship, pulling it close to their doom... until Captain V decides to turn the tables on the alien menace and fire at it with all they have!!! 🚀🚀🚀 This epic space showdown is more proof that Uncle Jack still had plenty of lead in his pencil... it’s so grand a huge! The canons and exterior landscape of the ship are done to amazing precision, and the alien being is illustrated in a marvelous way, demonstrating how serious of a threat it really is... the whole thing is so spectacular I had to break down into two close ups (pics two and three) in order to really appreciate the majesty that Jack created here. Most comic artists would NEVER create anything this spectacular in their whole careers... Jack was doing this kind of work when some folks say he was on a DECLINE!!!!
