Corvus is Latin for crow, and Umbranox is Latin for dark night, so basically the Gray Fox has the edgiest name in Cyrodiil. XD
But I got randomly curious if Millona was Latin, and according to Google translate it means millions and her full name translates to this:
Is this true? If so, I think that's pretty cool.
Also I don't know how accurate these are, but giving them relatives could be fun. XD
#latin#millona umbranox#corvus umbranox#oblivion#the elder scrolls#tes#tesblr#“here's my assassin cousin; my vampire cousin; cousin who thinks he's batman; my drunk cousin...”#actually they might all think they're batman#especially corvus XD#with some of these i started with a name or latin word and messed around till i got something even better#like celia translated to dark beer#and i was like that's funny but what happens if i add an m? XD#it's a fantasy game their names can be anything XD#edit: there's a fic in the tags :D

the thieves guild questline in oblivion fucks so hard but i do actually wish that hieronymous lex and the grey fox Were the same person. i feel like it would have been a genuinely satisfying payoff for the quest, alongside him being corvus umbranox. i love it anyways tho <3
#tes iv#tes oblivion#tesblr#corvus umbranox#hieronymous lex#the grey fox#thieves guild#it was more of a shock to me that the grey fox/corvus umbranox and hieronymous lex were DIFFERENT people#i know its bc oblivion has like 5 voice actors total but man it could have been so funny#i mean. have YOU ever seen the grey fox and hieronymous lex in the same room?? 👀#bishop.txt

Two Foxes
Universe: TESIV: Oblivion Warnings: None Words: 500 Context: I was inspired by @thenopequeen's tags on this post: "#anvil is home once I have completed the thieves guild #i like to imagine that I go to corvus for advice sometimes". I banged it out in like 2hs between laundry loads so LMK if you spot any spelling errors. Available on AO3
"Oh, and the Hero of Kvatch called by last night," Dairihill said, "asking to speak to his Lordship. However, your Ladyship and Lordship had just gone in for dinner, so I felt it prudent not to bother his Lordship." Millona Umbranox nodded, as she shifted the papers on her desk. "Did you catch that, dear?" she asked, over her shoulder. "Yes, my love," Corvus replied from where he lounged on the other side of the room, drinking coffee and pursuing the latest Black Horse Courier. "Curious they asked for you?" "I'm sure it's just a social visit. They are, after all, responsible for ending my amnesia and bringing me home." "Mmm. You'll have to invite them to dinner. I never did get to thank them properly." "Of course, my love. Dairihill, do you know if they're still at Benirus Manor? I'll take a walk down after breakfast." "I believe so, your Lordship. Speaking of breakfast – since it's a lovely morning, I took the liberty of having it laid out on the balcony." "Capital!" Corvus stood, readjusting his robe. "Will you join me, your Ladyship?" Millona glanced around to see Corvus extending a hand, giving her a boyish smile. She squeezed his hand. "In a moment, dear. I've a few more items to cover, and then I'll be out." "Very well, my heart," Corvus said, kissing the back of her hand.
~~~
Outside, the morning was already warm and bright. A salt-scented breeze ruffled his hair, as if it was glad to have him back in the castle. Beyond the crenelations, the sea glittered like a spray of diamonds on blue silk. "These are damn fine strawberries." Corvus startled, head whipping towards the table under the bower, hands reaching for an absent knife. "How d'you think they grow 'em so sweet?" the Hero of Kvatch asked. Their feet were propped on the table, and they held up a half-eaten strawberry for consideration.
Corvus smoothed down his dressing robe, regaining his decorum as he took a seat opposite the Hero. "I believe," he said, reaching for a slice of bread and the butter dish, "it has to do with the fertilizer used. Good to see you again, my friend. To what do I owe the honour of this visit?" "Ah, Foxie. Let's eat first, maybe?" "Millona will be out soon. I'd rather not alarm her by finding a stranger at her breakfast table." "Didn't I just hear her inviting me to dinner?" The Hero grinned. Corvus rolled his eyes, a small grin of his own creeping onto his face. "Touché. However, I don't think this is quite what my Lady wife had in mind. Your business, my friend?" The Hero lowered their legs, leaning in with a serious expression. "Very well, my Lord Corvus. I need some advice, regarding the Guild…"
Above, the gulls wheeled in the puffy periwinkle sky while below, the surf crashed against yellow cliffs. And in Castle Anvil, two Foxes conversed over strawberries.
Corvus Umbranox
first impression: the whole revelation was just a massive 'OH!' moment. and then the ring... so many feelings so little time to reconcile them all
impression now: love him. so much to unpack about his backstory... and his return to anvil... him and millona oh i love them so much. absolutely capital fellow. brynjolf could never
favourite moment: aside from the whole last part of the thieves' guild questline... before that point when 'the stranger' spends half his time watching millona. or when you meet him in the abandoned house in anvil and he talks about the grey fox leading a lonely existence...
idea for a story: i want him to meet gentleman jim somehow. idk when or how. but the gentleman-thief conference needs to happen. it will be the most chaotically polite thing you've ever seen
unpopular opinion: i don't think i have any... i do wonder if him and millona being so antagonistic towards the whole business afterwards is kind of an act though
favourite relationship: did i mention millona because millona
favourite headcanon: honestly i like to keep a little of the mystery. kind of spoils the fun if you start elucidating his past. but i am toying with the idea of him putting the old smugglers' tunnels in castle anvil to use...
✨Spoilers for TES IV and V if you're reading this.✨
I saw a thing a little while ago that said that Skyrim was darker than Oblivion.
As someone's who's played more Skyrim than Oblivion, here are a few reasons why I think that's false.
Gonna start with some of the dark stuff from Skyrim
So Skyrim has it's fair share of pretty dark moments: Mercer Frey trying to murder the LDB, Astrid trying to murder the LDB but it backfires, everything with Cicero, the Namira and Boethiah quests, the entire concept of Alduin, that one Barrow in the northeast with the necrophiliac, the whole deal with the Falmer and how their souls are no longer black souls, and more I'm sure I haven't found yet.
However, most of those fit with the general aesthetic of the game. Skyrim is a cross between harsh frozen wasteland, dangerous forest, and dragon raids. Also Mercer and Astrid are part of the groups that are well outside of the law. Also also Astrid broke all the tenets already. I don't really like Astrid.
On the other hand, you've got Oblivion, and I think I'll start with the Blackwood Company.
So in the fighters guild questline, the HOK joins the Blackwood Company to infiltrate it and like, see what's going on. They get sent on this mission and have to drink this hist sap that makes them think that they're killing goblins when they're actually killing the townsfolk.
You want darker? It gets darker.
I'm not entirely sure where this next one comes from, but some random dark elf dies in front of you after trying to be crowned king or something. He just straight up gets electrocuted by the Ayleid chair.
additionally, Oblivion has it's main call to fame: the literal realm of Oblivion. If you've played the game, there's really not much need to explain. If not, there's just random corpses hanging around, there's these things called something along the lines of "the punished". It's quite literally just flesh bags filled with loot.
The main quest itself is filled with dark themes, which makes sense-- you're stopping a cult trying to bring about the end of the world. The cave thing under Mankar Camoren's Paradise is full of people being tortured by being submerged in lava but they don't die. It seems that even those who were loyal to the Mythic Dawn are not safe from the Savage Garden.
This one's a random detail, but there's a alchemist in Leyawiin who wants to know the fine for necrophilia. Apparently it's less than Morrowind.
Corvus Umbranox was kept from his home and family because of the cowl of the Grey Fox and his wife almost arrested him when he tried to return to her. Their reunion was very sweet aside from that.
To close this out, I'd like to turn to the Dark Brotherhood from Oblivion. Throw out Astrid and her failed betrayal, let's talk about how Mathieu Bellamont almost succeeded in wiping the entire Brotherhood out. This gets its own group of sections. I really like the Dark Brotherhood and I'll probably go into that rabbit hole later.
To kick it off, let's start with the Purification. I think it's implied that Bellamont was the reason the Purification in the Cheydinhal sanctuary happened. So that's killing off everyone who trusted you.
Secondly, you have the dead drops. After the first two of those, you're just killing off members of the Black Hand.
After that is the murder of Lucien Lachance. I don't think I'll ever forget walking into Applewatch the first time. And then Bellamont kills two more people before getting killed himself.
Random side note, but Ungolim put up a heck of a fight when I tried to kill him. I think he knew he was next.
I've skipped over the Daedric quests, maybe I'll do something comparing the ones in Oblivion to those in Skyrim later, but Namira's was pretty gnarly.
Anywho, if you read all of this, thank you!
honestly insane that the gray fox has you make hieronymus lex captain of the guard in anvil. like a month later a man completely unaffiliated with the thieves guild is gonna walk into castle anvil and reveal himself to be the missing count corvus umbranox. they’re gonna have to sit beside each other at dinners and stuff. are they going to be friends?? is he angling for a threesome??? what was in this man’s mind????
#corvus: i miss my beloved wife so much i'm cursed with a burden that isolates me completely. bring my nemesis to my city though. for reasons#i know i know it's because HL is like actually a good captain unlike literally every other guard in every city in oblivion. he does the work#and CU is probably like 'ah i need my greatest enemy to protect my beloved wife'. but take a step back. that's INSANE.#the bisexuality of it all.......
